Preseason Finale – Eagles at Dolphins

So this is the last game the Miami Dolphins will be playing that won’t count in the standings. It will count, however, for those players desperately vying to grab a roster spot. The majority of the roster is probably accounted for, but there are probably a handful of bubble decisions that will be determined by performances in this last game. There will be a few positions where the depth will have to be figured out, most importantly DB, where the Dolphins have lost some depth players, and actually may not have their starting CB Byron Jones ready for Game 1 against the New England Patriots. At RB, no one back has looked particularly good in either game yet, so most of the work in practice will have determined the depth chart so far, plus, McD may just want to keep the Patriots guessing as to what our offense will actually be. WR is where a few potential depth guys have looked good, but considering we have the first 4 spots locked up with Hill, Waddle, Wilson and Ezukanma, add in the fact that we may carry 3 QB’s, plus at least one fullback, it’s possible only 5 WR’s make it, and not 6. Does Lynn Bowden Jr. make the cut, or perhaps Braylon Sanders, or River Cracraft, or veteran Mohammed Sanu?

Running back has been a tough one to figure. You would think you can write in Chase Edmonds, Raheem Mostert and Sony Michel, because McD and Grier just brought them here. Myles Gaskin was here already, but he’s a guy that has produced too. Salvon Ahmed is too much like Gaskin, so I guess it will be either or, if one them makes the roster. Rookie ZaQuandre White hasn’t seen much action, just 2 carries for negative 1 yards. Gaskin leads the Dolphins with 39 yards on 8 carries. QB Skylar Thompson is 2nd with 26. In other words, we really haven’t seen enough to have any expectations. ZaQuandre White does have a 19 yard TD reception, so there’s that.

It has to be tempered because it’s preseason, but I like what I’ve seen of DE Porter Gustin, and I think he has a chance to stick. At LB, both Cameron Goode and 3rd RD draft pick Channing Tindall showed some positive things. Tindall is a lock, but Goode may find himself a spot on the roster as well. At CB, Mackensie Alexander is done, (that was quick!), so guys like Keion Crossen and longshot Kader Kohou have a chance because of the injury situation. Iggy seems to be on the outside looking in. Everything I’ve seen from this kid in this preseason tells me he’s a not an NFL player. We did well taking a shot with Nik Needham, I think one of the aforementioned guys is also going to get a shot.

At TE, there’s been lots of chatter about Mike Gesicki getting traded. I don’t see it happening, but I’m not against it if we get the right return. Gesicki is a one dimensional player at the moment, a talented one, but still one dimensional. He’s a receiver, and hasn’t seemed to have embraced the blocking aspect of the position. Durham Smythe can do both, but he’s not as good as a receiver as Gesicki. Long hasn’t really proved he’s great at anything, and Cethan Carter gives you H-back flexibility and is a strong blocker. I think to myself, Durham Smythe, Hunter Long and Cethan Carter don’t put any fear into any defense, and while Gesicki isn’t a great blocker, he’s a top 8-10 receiving TE. Tough call there, but if they can get a starter where we need it for Gesicki, or a 3rd RD pick in the 2023 draft, go for it.

On the O-line, we’ve been protecting LT Terron Armstead, and Larnel Coleman has been given a lot of playing time. Coleman has been good and bad, as expected. Coleman was a 7th RD pick last year, and he appears to be locked in as Armstead’s backup. The 5 we know will be here are Armstead, Eichenberg, Williams, Hunt and Jackson. The remaining guys are Greg Little, Solomon Kindley, Robert Jones, Michael Deiter, Adam Pankey, Kion Smith, Kellen Diesch and Blaise Andries. Due to the fact that Armstead is oft injured, Coleman seems to be safe. Greg Little was a 2nd RD pick back in ’19 for the Panthers, so he has some pedigree, but we haven’t seen anything from him here in MIA. Lots of decisions. Our special teams is set with K Jason Sanders, P Thomas Morstead, LS Blake Ferguson, and KR/PR Tyreek Hill, Raheem Mostert, Jaylen Waddle and Jevon Holland. Just stay healthy guys, the roster will work itself out!

Steve, there are also FOUR tabs along the top of the page where you unclick the choices. You have to go to each tab and unclick them. The second tab “Comments” Is probably the one hitting your inbox.

323 is the flip side (opposite corner) of what we had last year on the visitor’s side, but our rows are like 5-6 rows further down. And the 8X4 square on the aisle is nice.

Bad news is the price is more at $85 per ticket.

Darius Hodge got cut. That might be the Flowers roster spot.

Booo! That was my Herd player on the team. 🤬

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

So Hodge was cut. I thought he looked decent in the PS but he does lack prototype size as an edge guy.

      Any other players cut yet?

Okay these are players rumored to be cut or have been.
Adam Pankey – Per Barry Jackson
    Calvin Munson – Per Jackson
    Blaise Andries – Per Jackson
    Mohammed Sanu – Per Jackson
Gerrid Doaks – Per Jeremy Fowler

Just finalized Dave & Buster’s Hollywood for the night before. As usghe will run 6-10 (although later an option).

Also changed up the food a bit. Gonna start with the apps like before early but then at about 8 they’ll roll out a nachos/chicken taco bar. They let me do fewer per person orders of each in order to have both. But overall will be more food.

Wow I am still shocked by it.
I guess I must trust the coaches who see the players every day.

  18. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

We are all slotting every player into the 53 from what we have, but it ain’t over when you hit 53. Normally we swap in 2 or 3 players after the cuts are done. But maybe as deep as this team is will be less of that this year.

  19. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

To me, it was a no brainer, but I am glad we kept Gaskin and Ahmed has flashed in this offense. I like our RB group. Stash Doaks and White on PS.

  20. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Can you imagine all the trade talk going on right now with every team’s last cuts.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Apparently includes us and Preston Williams. But even that is a 6th or a 7th if it works out. ONly thing we have going on our side of that is he is making close to the vet minimum.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Yeah the phones are all ringing. They have to 3:00pm tomorrow right?

  21. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Practice Squad is a lot bigger gang than in years past. Up to 16. And not sure about all that games played stuff overall, but a huge chunk of that is gone. Vets welcome.

  22. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

So as someone above said, after 13 cuts, that brings us down to 67 plus we signed Flowers, so we are at 68, so we will see 15 more cuts. Now is when it really hurts.
At least we can bring back 16 of them, although as all of you have said, we will probably get some of those 16 from other clubs even as they raid our cuts.
The only one of the listed cuts so far that I’d like us to bring back is ZQWhite, and maybe Doaks, although I did think Hodge played well enough to make our PS at least.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Go watch Tyreek highlights that we all posted when we traded for him. Mahomes under threw him most of the time on deep throws, partly because he’s not a rhythm QB but an improve guy and broken play stuff. Whenever they connected it was amazing!!! Every throw Tua makes is critiqued. It’s all nonsense. There is some truth to Tua being more accurate and a better rhythm QB. The time is now for him to prove that. 🙂

I’m wondering if Ingram is on the bubble and that’s why we signed Flowers. I haven’t seen or heard much about Ingram.

    • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

I thought that also. He didn’t make much of an impact that last ps game when he was in there with the starters. Like we were missing AVG that last game as far as getting any pressure from that side. He got some push but no pressure.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

AVG is totally underrated. He can play on my team any time. I like Ingram but he might be done at 33. The coaches see him everyday.

    • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

That very well might be true.
They will definitely cut Ingram if they think he also looked “done,”
but I didn’t think he looked like he was just going through the motions,
but then I missed on Sony,
so it might be something only seen in practice
where he lost a step or
      where he lost his mojo.

    • Wyoming85's avatar Wyoming85 says:

      Ingram is a rush OLB
      Flowers is a true DE

      Not the same

  30. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

I’m still shocked we cut Sony Michel.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I’m not. He looks sluggish in open space and can only power for a yard or two. That’s not enough to make a team. He looked sluggish during the Rams Super Bowl run. Cam Akers worked his way back into the mix after an Achilles injury. Pretty remarkable actually. Michel looks done. I was hoping for the best but the coaches said no he’s not what we’re looking for.

McDaniel likes quickness and speed. It’s obvious.

  31. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

But Flowers is a big dude,
    like Ogbah size,
and he can play true DE and help out inside in short yardage.
Ingram is more of a OLB, but maybe he’s too slow to cover any more.
I said way back at draft time that we only had one listed DE on the roster.
Then we traded all those picks for Hill (yay),
so there was no real way to pick both a DE and a ILB, both of which we needed.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Flowers is 6-2 260 range. Phillips is a much bigger and faster dude and closer to Ogbah’s size. But Flowers when healthy can play. He fits our edge role.

Phillips is the next big edge guy in the NFL. It’s okay to enjoy that Dolphins fans. LOL

      • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

I agree with you … all 3 are great players and will be fun to watch.
Flowers is shorter and huskier, thicker at 6’2 265.
Phillips is much taller and built more like a TE.
He’s 6’5 or 6’6 263. Same weight but stretched out.
        Ogbah is more of a prototype 3-4 DE … he’s 6’4 278. That’s hard to block.

  32. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

All the big boys are gone. It seems now that it’s Mostert, Edmonds, Gaskin and Ahmed, unless we pick someone else up. I guess McD doesn’t have the need for a bigger back.

      plus FB Ingold
I think he makes the team.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Right Naples, but Ingold doesn’t carry the football. Not sure who the short yardage back is in this group, or if there’s a guy that wears down the defense other than them getting tired of chasing them. 🙂

I’d keep Kion Smith over Larnel Coleman, but I’ve been wrong a couple times already, sooo …

good call Steve on “Coleman next”
I was not impressed by Coleman’s work in PS1 or PS2,

He has good feet, so maybe we keep him around to develop.

  60. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Steve, I think Iggy makes the cut this season (last time)

  61. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

just to make you feel a bit better Rock, 80 down to 53 is 27 x 32 teams would be 864 players being cut, more or less (see Trey Flowers taking up 6 guys’ roster spots).

    • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

      Of course Rock
you are probably counting all the way back up to 90, so that would take it up to 1184, so basically you were correct, and I should just not be so OCD.

  65. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Looks like MM is going for broke, at least what having Ingram and Flowers, then cutting Bowden suggests

Look for a rotation of Waddle, Hill and Snowman returning punts

    • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

      That’s dangerous,

Something that was an interesting coincidence was us seeing our last year’s #3 QB in PS up close on his new team, which really showed off the difference between a usual QB3 vs third stringers and how Skylar looks.
Assuming Skylar makes the 53, I can totally support that.

  67. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Crossen is a lock, unless he has an injury I don’t know about

Iggy and Kohou both make it, if Jones stays on PUP, which I don’t expect

Or we keep 6 CBs and 4 S

  68. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

There it is. No trade. (other teams KNEW)

  69. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

No surprise cuts for me just yet. Though, was hopeful Kindley and Bowden would have showed enough.

I see Sanu, Michel and Bowden getting signed elsewhere. I see a few of the rest coming back to our practice squad like

    OL Adam Pankey
    DB Quincy Wilson
    RB Gerrid Doaks
    CB Elijah Hamilton
    RB Za’Quandre White
    LB Darius Hodge
    OL Kelln Diesch
    LB Porter Gustin
    OL Solomon Kindley

Some may get bumped for another team’s cut.

  70. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

    Yeah baby!

  71. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Did Trent Sherfield play this preseason? I don’t remember hearing his name once in TC or the games.

  72. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

I didn’t have Bowden making it, so the only thing that mildly surprises me to this point is Iggy seemingly surviving to waste a spot for one more year.

How many more do we have to cut?

  73. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

You just watch. Preston Williams will be picked up by NE and put up 100 yards and 2 TD’s on us this year! (Dolphins luck)

    • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

would agree, but they have Devante, so Preston would be redundant.
Besides we know very well how to guard both of those guys.

  74. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Per Spotrac, that Pats have officially only made 1 cut down from their 80, Malcolm Butler.

Leave it to Bellicheat to wait until the last minute.

  75. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

We have freed up $14,018,128 so far with our cuts. Though, probably only Bowden ($1,038,128) was top 51 in money that would impact our cap space.

  76. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

MM said he was going to keep the guys that are getting it done now, some vets of course exclude from that, but true at RB

  77. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

    Cracraft still on the roster?

  78. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

If I recall correctly the waiver wire starts tomorrow at noon and it goes in order of the draft? So if you want a player that was waived then you put bid in for him and if you are the lowest (highest?) team to put in a bid you get that player?

That process must make it hard to choose who to put a claim in on! You MIGHT get more players than you plan on or you might get none!

  79. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

    Stille gone
    PS guy

  80. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Spotrac shows 22 cuts so far.

  81. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

    There goes Ben Stille

  82. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Spotrac shows Darius Hodge and D’Angelo Ross added to IR and not just released with an injury designation.

  83. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

    How many more to go?

  84. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

    Thought so!

    Thanks Alain

    • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

That’s better than waiting till Christmas for our first pick like we had to do in the draft.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

The other problem is, if you’re awarded someone, they must be put on your 53 for some period of time, so choose wisely Grasshopper

  85. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

It is still possible Michel and Bowden could end up on our PS.

  86. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

I don’t think both make it to the NE game. There will be some churning.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

No reason to keep Sanders, we have enough guys, that can do what he does

Cracraft is similar, but has that Cooper Kupp edge and twitch

  87. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

This is who we currently have on IR and their cap hit per Spotrac.

    Adam Shaheen TE $2,184,805
    Calvin Munson ILB $704,412
    Mackensie Alexander CB $580,000
    Trill Williams CB $460,000
    Darius Hodge DE $455,000
    John Lovett FB $455,000
    D’Angelo Ross CB $455,000

  88. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Looking at the last few cuts seems there’s no reason to jettison Teddy, just yet

  89. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I expect Sanders to be the last one to go, probably trying to trade him

  90. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

    Alain Poupart
    @PoupartNFL
Interesting to note that the three veteran running backs the Dolphins brought in last season — Phillip Lindsay, Malcolm Brown, Duke Johnson — all now have been released

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

All 3 of them will sign with some one before September is through

And each of them will have a couple of good games
Bc that’s the way it works with RBs

      If you aren’t elite
You’ll still get a chance to start a couple of games

Malcolm Brown may be done but the other 2 looked like they had juice left last season

      • pheloniusphish's avatar pheloniusphish says:

Probably not resigned until after week one. Otherwise as vested vets their salary is guaranteed for the year.

  91. boulderfinfan's avatar boulderfinfan says:

    Stanger,
do you need me to send you money now? how do I go about that doing that? thx

  92. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

1 of Fejedelem (my choice), Iggy, Kohou, Campbell and Crossen should be cut maybe 2

  93. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

    Here’s the reference I am using about “waived/injured” …
“waived defensive back D’Angelo Ross with an injury designation. This means that Ross reverts back to Miami’s injured reserve if he’s unclaimed on waivers.”
So I think I got it backwards.
I think now it means any other team can poach him for 24 hours or so,
but if none do, he is ours again but must go on IR.
    Hodge too

  94. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Browns are cutting Josh Rosen. Still angry we wasted a 2nd and 5th on that scrub.

  95. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Kenyan Drake signing with the Ravens

LOL, stick it to ’em Alain

  97. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

  99. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Guess those last few cuts are taking a while, either trying to trade or tough decisions

    rock thanks,
stanger, I actually get to miami the morning of 16th (I’m flying a red eye 🙂 . So I can pay you at the tailgate if that works.
