Preseason Finale – Eagles at Dolphins

So this is the last game the Miami Dolphins will be playing that won’t count in the standings. It will count, however, for those players desperately vying to grab a roster spot. The majority of the roster is probably accounted for, but there are probably a handful of bubble decisions that will be determined by performances in this last game. There will be a few positions where the depth will have to be figured out, most importantly DB, where the Dolphins have lost some depth players, and actually may not have their starting CB Byron Jones ready for Game 1 against the New England Patriots. At RB, no one back has looked particularly good in either game yet, so most of the work in practice will have determined the depth chart so far, plus, McD may just want to keep the Patriots guessing as to what our offense will actually be. WR is where a few potential depth guys have looked good, but considering we have the first 4 spots locked up with Hill, Waddle, Wilson and Ezukanma, add in the fact that we may carry 3 QB’s, plus at least one fullback, it’s possible only 5 WR’s make it, and not 6. Does Lynn Bowden Jr. make the cut, or perhaps Braylon Sanders, or River Cracraft, or veteran Mohammed Sanu?

Running back has been a tough one to figure. You would think you can write in Chase Edmonds, Raheem Mostert and Sony Michel, because McD and Grier just brought them here. Myles Gaskin was here already, but he’s a guy that has produced too. Salvon Ahmed is too much like Gaskin, so I guess it will be either or, if one them makes the roster. Rookie ZaQuandre White hasn’t seen much action, just 2 carries for negative 1 yards. Gaskin leads the Dolphins with 39 yards on 8 carries. QB Skylar Thompson is 2nd with 26. In other words, we really haven’t seen enough to have any expectations. ZaQuandre White does have a 19 yard TD reception, so there’s that.

It has to be tempered because it’s preseason, but I like what I’ve seen of DE Porter Gustin, and I think he has a chance to stick. At LB, both Cameron Goode and 3rd RD draft pick Channing Tindall showed some positive things. Tindall is a lock, but Goode may find himself a spot on the roster as well. At CB, Mackensie Alexander is done, (that was quick!), so guys like Keion Crossen and longshot Kader Kohou have a chance because of the injury situation. Iggy seems to be on the outside looking in. Everything I’ve seen from this kid in this preseason tells me he’s a not an NFL player. We did well taking a shot with Nik Needham, I think one of the aforementioned guys is also going to get a shot.

At TE, there’s been lots of chatter about Mike Gesicki getting traded. I don’t see it happening, but I’m not against it if we get the right return. Gesicki is a one dimensional player at the moment, a talented one, but still one dimensional. He’s a receiver, and hasn’t seemed to have embraced the blocking aspect of the position. Durham Smythe can do both, but he’s not as good as a receiver as Gesicki. Long hasn’t really proved he’s great at anything, and Cethan Carter gives you H-back flexibility and is a strong blocker. I think to myself, Durham Smythe, Hunter Long and Cethan Carter don’t put any fear into any defense, and while Gesicki isn’t a great blocker, he’s a top 8-10 receiving TE. Tough call there, but if they can get a starter where we need it for Gesicki, or a 3rd RD pick in the 2023 draft, go for it.

On the O-line, we’ve been protecting LT Terron Armstead, and Larnel Coleman has been given a lot of playing time. Coleman has been good and bad, as expected. Coleman was a 7th RD pick last year, and he appears to be locked in as Armstead’s backup. The 5 we know will be here are Armstead, Eichenberg, Williams, Hunt and Jackson. The remaining guys are Greg Little, Solomon Kindley, Robert Jones, Michael Deiter, Adam Pankey, Kion Smith, Kellen Diesch and Blaise Andries. Due to the fact that Armstead is oft injured, Coleman seems to be safe. Greg Little was a 2nd RD pick back in ’19 for the Panthers, so he has some pedigree, but we haven’t seen anything from him here in MIA. Lots of decisions. Our special teams is set with K Jason Sanders, P Thomas Morstead, LS Blake Ferguson, and KR/PR Tyreek Hill, Raheem Mostert, Jaylen Waddle and Jevon Holland. Just stay healthy guys, the roster will work itself out!

We had better get a 2nd rounder in return if we deal him, NOTHING less. Gesicki might not be a system fit for Coach McDaniel, but he IS a system fit for many other teams.

For instance, if he were to end up in San Diego, he’d become the new Antonio Gates for them.

Though, I do think something is in the works. Conner was dinged up and may go to the pup so we can sign another CB.

I don’t see us starting the season with 5 CB’s. There will be some on the PS who could be called up but for games but still think we see a signing.

Son, that spot is usually money. We have gotten so much rain here on the panhandle I think it has pushed the larger mangroves and spanish mackerel out farther in the bay. Still surprised I didn’t hook up a nice red though.

Watched this and thought “a good play, but not great, what’s the big deal”, then saw it at the 14 second mark and realized just how good this play was…

Kinda looked like me in softball lol. I played third.

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

The angle from behind was awesome, showing how quick he adjusted his glove to the catch instead of letting the ball get up on him and still got a clean throw to 2nd. There’s a reason he’s a 9 time gold glove winner and 5 time platinum GG winner.

  78. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

M13, Bronco’s released McTelvin Agim. Wasn’t he one of your guys? I could be wrong.

  79. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I saw a lot of 5-2 in the PS. Also called the 3-4 but it looks more 5-2. Ogbah, Davis, Wilkins/Sieler inside with edge guys standing on both sides just off the LOS. This defense has a lot of flexibility.

No, man. He wasn’t one of my guys.

No worries. I was joking that his opinion means nothing to me. I don’t think he’s very good as a pundit. He also never lived up to being the top pick in the 1st round in 1996. He was good, not great.

Tanner Conner is a guy who is 6-3 232 with lots of speed. I wonder what we have in store for him? McDaniel loves speed. Do we go big at times but also have speed in doing that?

Guys go in motion on a defense that went big but Gesicki and Conner are mismatches against LBs. Run or pass.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Son, I’m talking about certain situations where our formation looks run but maybe not. Could be a nice formation in the red zone.

Tyreek is going to get a breather here and there. 😉

      • son of a son of a shula's avatar son of a son of a shula says:

I know and that does appear as a run formation. Ingold instead of Conner is similar as well.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

It’s trying to create mismatches with different personnel packages. More for a defense to think about and deal with. Then you can switch back to Hill and Waddle. Create mayhem. LOL

  86. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

    Cardinals 3rd baseman play

Lol, he lollipoped it to 2nd, that guy was safe, called out on the in the neighborhood play of the 70s😏

So what, the ball took a charity hop off of 3rd and he was way behind the base, then jumped to throw

I don’t get at was great about it

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

It’s funny, I shit you not, I honestly almost said in my original post that Steve probably won’t see why it was a great play, but didn’t want to call you out unnecessarily. You often don’t see excellence in top plays, like the tremendous Metcalf catch from behind on the INT.

Only a few 3rd basemen in the league catch that cleanly after it hits the bag and redirects right in front of him; he just does it so smoothly he makes it look easy. Like I said, there is a reason he’s a 9 time GG winner, and plays like that are the reason why.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Seriously, that’s not even close to a great play, besides getting a phantom call at 2nd, nothing was special about it, I could’ve made the same play

My arm isn’t as strong, but my reflexes, when I played 3rd would’ve fielded that ball, and I’ve jumped many times falling away to throw it, it’s no big deal

They must’ve left the review off the video

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

You do get, that when the ball hits the bag it slows down right

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

It’s not a phantom call at 2nd. It’s something that is part of the game. If the ball beats the runner, the um will nearly always give the 2nd baseman the call if he swipes near the bag or steps off as he’s catching. That is standard shyte. How do you not know that if you played or even just watch? The throw beat the runner which is why he was out even if the 2nd baseman stepped of a tick early.

I always love the ‘I played on some level so I can sit on my couch and talk about how I could do these things’, lol. I played baseball too, and I know a ball hit sharply that redirects 5 feet in front of you is not an easy catch.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Did you notice I said 70s in the neighborhood play, they stopped calling that an out years ago

Now comes instant replay. Instant replay of the “Neighborhood Play” clearly shows the fielder not receiving the baseball while their foot was on second base. Thus, the out call on the field can now and will be overturned by instant replay. If a manager is watching a double play occur, he and his staff pay close attention to the fielder at second base during a double play. If there is a slight chance of the “Neighborhood Play” occurring, the challenge flag comes out and the play is reviewed.

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

And yet that play didn’t get overturned. Maybe the manager wasn’t paying attention 🤔

Why are we still talking about this? Based on my experience and knowledge, I deem it to be an excellent play, not in contention for best play of the year or anything like that, but an excellent play.

You don’t think it was a great play, that it was standard; you would have made it, and you probably would have turned two.

Have we covered everything or is there more to say?

  87. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Right now this is the roster breakdown.
    QB 3
    RB 4
    FB 2
    TE 4
    WR 5
    OL 8

    DL 5
    ED 4
    LB 5
    DB 10

    K, P and LS

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

STs is a big part of it. McDaniel is looking for a fast play-making team in all phases.

So who returns kicks and punts? Could be 4-5 different players. KR is not that big of a deal because most kickoffs end up at the 25. PR is a big deal.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

MM is coaching to win, it may scare you, that Waddle, Hill and Snow will be returning punts, but not him, just like it doesn’t scare a downhill speed skater to race

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Who are you calling an FB? Cethan?

Tanner will be on some type of IR, so that puts TE down a notch, but when he comes back plus Gesicki we have 7 wrs, so the numbers make sense

  88. manitobafinfan's avatar manitobafinfan says:

        (The Cincy game)

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

We can’t control illegal plays or guys blocking at the knees. Players have to be responsible. Hill could catch a deep post or whatever and a Safety hits him in the head. Is he not supposed to play WR because it’s dangerous over the middle?

The PR play is not a contact play most of the time. It’s kind of 33.3 pct. Out of bounds, fair catch, downed, and sometimes a return.

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

        It was facetious 😉
I agree with you; give your playmakers the ball.

  98. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Kong, my bad. I think we treat players like they can’t do this or that because they might get hurt. Any play that can happen. I don’t get that sort of thinking.

I don’t think Bowden deserved a roster spot based on being the PR. He had his moments but he’s never showed us special. We have multiple guys who can do this utmost dangerous job. LOL

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Yeah, I’m with you and agree with everything your saying in this regard. I mention above, fielding punts gets your playmakers a few extra touches each game. Good things usually happen when you get your skill guys the ball.

And although kickoffs have been neutered, PRs can still have a big impact on the game. At the very least, it’s another thing the opponent has to account for.

  99. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Kindley looks like a mauler but man does he look out of shape. Talk about big uglies. He has not conditioned himself. He can’t move other than a couple of feet side to side during a play. He might be a good fit for another team, not on this team.

  100. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

All teams are in the same boat trying to put the best roster together with basically two weeks to go before they have to play a RS game that means anything. Except for the Rams/Bills who have to play Thursday night on the 8th. Everyone else plays on the 11th or 12th.

    It’s go time!
