Preseason Finale – Eagles at Dolphins

So this is the last game the Miami Dolphins will be playing that won’t count in the standings. It will count, however, for those players desperately vying to grab a roster spot. The majority of the roster is probably accounted for, but there are probably a handful of bubble decisions that will be determined by performances in this last game. There will be a few positions where the depth will have to be figured out, most importantly DB, where the Dolphins have lost some depth players, and actually may not have their starting CB Byron Jones ready for Game 1 against the New England Patriots. At RB, no one back has looked particularly good in either game yet, so most of the work in practice will have determined the depth chart so far, plus, McD may just want to keep the Patriots guessing as to what our offense will actually be. WR is where a few potential depth guys have looked good, but considering we have the first 4 spots locked up with Hill, Waddle, Wilson and Ezukanma, add in the fact that we may carry 3 QB’s, plus at least one fullback, it’s possible only 5 WR’s make it, and not 6. Does Lynn Bowden Jr. make the cut, or perhaps Braylon Sanders, or River Cracraft, or veteran Mohammed Sanu?

Running back has been a tough one to figure. You would think you can write in Chase Edmonds, Raheem Mostert and Sony Michel, because McD and Grier just brought them here. Myles Gaskin was here already, but he’s a guy that has produced too. Salvon Ahmed is too much like Gaskin, so I guess it will be either or, if one them makes the roster. Rookie ZaQuandre White hasn’t seen much action, just 2 carries for negative 1 yards. Gaskin leads the Dolphins with 39 yards on 8 carries. QB Skylar Thompson is 2nd with 26. In other words, we really haven’t seen enough to have any expectations. ZaQuandre White does have a 19 yard TD reception, so there’s that.

It has to be tempered because it’s preseason, but I like what I’ve seen of DE Porter Gustin, and I think he has a chance to stick. At LB, both Cameron Goode and 3rd RD draft pick Channing Tindall showed some positive things. Tindall is a lock, but Goode may find himself a spot on the roster as well. At CB, Mackensie Alexander is done, (that was quick!), so guys like Keion Crossen and longshot Kader Kohou have a chance because of the injury situation. Iggy seems to be on the outside looking in. Everything I’ve seen from this kid in this preseason tells me he’s a not an NFL player. We did well taking a shot with Nik Needham, I think one of the aforementioned guys is also going to get a shot.

At TE, there’s been lots of chatter about Mike Gesicki getting traded. I don’t see it happening, but I’m not against it if we get the right return. Gesicki is a one dimensional player at the moment, a talented one, but still one dimensional. He’s a receiver, and hasn’t seemed to have embraced the blocking aspect of the position. Durham Smythe can do both, but he’s not as good as a receiver as Gesicki. Long hasn’t really proved he’s great at anything, and Cethan Carter gives you H-back flexibility and is a strong blocker. I think to myself, Durham Smythe, Hunter Long and Cethan Carter don’t put any fear into any defense, and while Gesicki isn’t a great blocker, he’s a top 8-10 receiving TE. Tough call there, but if they can get a starter where we need it for Gesicki, or a 3rd RD pick in the 2023 draft, go for it.

On the O-line, we’ve been protecting LT Terron Armstead, and Larnel Coleman has been given a lot of playing time. Coleman has been good and bad, as expected. Coleman was a 7th RD pick last year, and he appears to be locked in as Armstead’s backup. The 5 we know will be here are Armstead, Eichenberg, Williams, Hunt and Jackson. The remaining guys are Greg Little, Solomon Kindley, Robert Jones, Michael Deiter, Adam Pankey, Kion Smith, Kellen Diesch and Blaise Andries. Due to the fact that Armstead is oft injured, Coleman seems to be safe. Greg Little was a 2nd RD pick back in ’19 for the Panthers, so he has some pedigree, but we haven’t seen anything from him here in MIA. Lots of decisions. Our special teams is set with K Jason Sanders, P Thomas Morstead, LS Blake Ferguson, and KR/PR Tyreek Hill, Raheem Mostert, Jaylen Waddle and Jevon Holland. Just stay healthy guys, the roster will work itself out!

I think Greg Little will be the first off the bench to replace Terron if necessary. That’s good, rather than moving multiple players from one position to another.

definitely … cross training is ok, but this line needs to gel … certain things need to become automatic, not telegraphing to the DC, but quick twitch responses to a play call only happen if the muscle memory is there.

The first time we’ll see Miami’s new-looked rushing attack will be on Sept. 11, when the Dolphins host the New England Patriots at Hard Rock Stadium. McDaniel and company will look to exploit a defense that allowed 4.5 yards per carry and the league’s 11th-most yards on the ground last year.

Fingers Crossed! I hope we put a beating on them. 200+ yard or rushing 300 yds passing 5-6 TD’s!!!

    LET’S GO DOLPHINS!!!!!!

MM – “The coolest thing too is there was noise that he is alluding to, and one of the cooler parts of training camp for me in general,” McDaniel said Tuesday, “I made a point to the team the other day, was that do you know what Mike worried about in all that? About getting better at blocking and catching. Each and every day, he’s doing one or two things better to his standard of the way he wants his football to look. And that’s all you can ask for. That’s a guy that teammates and coaches and everyone respect — the ones that can ignore the noise and just try to get better.”

Coach on the RB room/keeping Myles and Salvon and cutting Sony: That process was brutal. It was a good thing for the Miami Dolphins but that competition was real.
Coach says that every time they signed a new back, Myles and Salvon just kept to their work on their craft. Said we’d sign a back then look at and see Salvon and Myles with weight vests getting work out on the field

So how does this waiver order work?
I know we are 15th, but when it is our turn, what can we do?
So say first time through, each team gets to pick one player who is on the waiver wire? And then the rest of the teams get to submit one, and then it starts over and each team gets one more and on and on?
    … …
or can we submit a batch of names all at once the first time?
    … …
Or is it player specific, meaning say Cracraft’s name is put on waivers and each team gets to say no we don’t want him till someone does and each of the 950 players go through it like that?
    … …
What a mess no matter what. Can’t they come up with something a little less chaotic?

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

I don’t think it is like a draft, but rather a list. You put in your list of guys you want and when your time comes if the ones at the top have been taken they go down to one who has not been. Come 2nd round they use the same list.

Naples, the wire works this way. A team puts in a form to the NFL with ALL the names of the players they would like to claim. Then they go down the list from the #1 pick team to the #32 pick team and the team with the highest draft pick (lowest number) is awarded that player. They do this for each player on waivers.

Some might get 32 teams bidding (doubtful) and some might have none and have to wait for a call after they clear waivers. (A call that may never come)

What we learned: All Tua Tagovailoa needed was a viable supporting cast?

Tua has been heavily criticized and scrutinized since entering the league, but little attention has been given to the fact that he has been operating behind a historically bad offensive line. With additions to that group in the offseason, the introduction of a proven NFL offensive system alongside an injection of blazing speed in the form of Tyreek Hill, Tua finished the preseason with an 88.8 PFF grade and the fifth-best passing grade in the league. Maybe all he needed was a viable platform to work from.

What we learned: Offensive coordinators are important

There’s probably a good reason that teams have a highly coveted and well-paid coach installed as offensive coordinator each year rather than treat it as some kind of prize in a coaching talent competition over training camp the way the Patriots seem to have done. New England’s offense looked lackluster across the various units this preseason, ranking 29th in EPA per play and 31st in scoring drive percentage. With Mac Jones entering a critical year, his lack of offensive coaching seems to be a massive concern.

The Jets have done an excellent job of roster construction over the past few seasons under general manager Joe Douglas, but it could all come to nothing unless they find viable quarterback play. Zach Wilson lost valuable development time with a needless knee injury and was looking poor before that happened. Veteran Joe Flacco can make some nice plays every now and then but will also inevitably pitch the ball to the defense if given enough opportunities. He finished the preseason with a 29.1 PFF grade. If Wilson can’t take a big step forward in his second season, the Jets will still languish at the bottom of the division.

With all due respect to Al Davis’s penchant for speed,
    “Just win, Baby.”
So … we’ve added another “fastest guy” to the team in Kalon Barnes.
We now have the fastest TE in his combine (Gesicki) @4.54
Keion Crossen the fastest ST guy @ 4.33
the fastest WR Hill in MPH
the fastest RB Mostert in MPH
the fastest draftee in his class CB Barnes 4.23
and the fastest OL in history Armstead 4.71 @ 306 lbs
And Tindall was 5 hundredths of a second off the fastest LB in his combine with a 4.47, which was faster than many skill position players.
Plus Phillips ran a blazing 4.56 as a 260lb DE,
which would’ve been the fastest time at his combine @ DL.
Iggy was known as “the fastest DB in the SEC” coming out with a 4.48.
    BTW … Jevon Holland ran a 4.47, which was 5th fastest safety;
however, only one of the first 4 are currently playing in the league.
    … …
Alec Ingold was the fastest FB in his combine (4.89),
but that’s got an asterisk, because
he was also the only true fullback invited to the 2019 NFL Scouting Combine.
    … …
    Also
Waddle ran a 4.37 and was known as “the fastest WR in his draft class,” but he didn’t run for the Combine testing.
    PS:
The first Practice Squad player we signed was WR Braylon Sanders @ 4.48
    Go Dolphins!!!

I wonder if Bowden had a choice (meaning if we would have brought him to our PS too) and decided to go to the Pets figuring he has a better chance to play based on what their WR room looks like.

    • ukfinfan's avatar ukfinfan says:

I spose another way of looking at it from our pov is that they have 2 of our rejects who we decided we didn’t need. You just know that ex-players always try harder against their old team though.

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Yeah, I’m not worried about LBJ or Parker. LBJ won’t even play against us, in game 1 at least. And my NE buddy at work told me he’s hearing rumors that Parker is already nursing a hamstring injury, lol. (I haven’t seen it in the news anywhere though.)

As for Belicheat getting info, I’ve always thought that is a bit overrated. The tape is out there from preseason, and he probably has scouts at division rivals’ open practices.

He knows what scheme we’re running, but LBJ isn’t going to know squat about our game planning for this week, and that is where the nuance is.

  83. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

It’s a loss, but Bowden is not going to beat us.
He won’t even play in the opening game.
By the New Year’s Day game, it’ll be a whole different year.

Cool, I’ll check it when I get home, but I don’t think that’ll affect me.

I watched some preseason games on the app last weekend and all went smooth. I also figured out how to change the player.

Still can’t seem to get CBS Miami to work properly, but as I said before it’s not a big deal as I shouldn’t need to watch on that local channel and I get Orlando and other local channels if I need to go local.

I figure the first couple of week of reg season, I’ll have my computer up and running as a backup in case I have any issues, but honestly, I think I’m already sold on the service. It seems to be pretty stable.

      • ukfinfan's avatar ukfinfan says:

It will deffo affect you. My CBS Miami wasn’t working either but I think they did a reset and last time I checked it was ok again. PlatPurp doesn’t work anymore. This is the App that all the programs work from. You need to uninstall, install PlatXC9 and re-input username and password. You’ll also have to resave faves. PITA, but c’est la vie. XC9 not as user friendly as Purple but still has same functionality.

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Oh, I gotcha. I glanced at the link you had sent me previously and I thought since it was already the XC9 link you sent me previously I wouldn’t have to reinstall. Thanks for the heads up

    WOW

Russell Wilson became the latest NFL quarterback to land a massive contract extension after agreeing to a reported five-year, $245 million deal with the Broncos on Thursday. The lucrative long-term agreement includes $165 million guaranteed, and ties Wilson to Denver for a total of seven seasons.

Coach on Lynn Bowden landing with NE and the potential of changing anything:

Considering you can go online and buy almost every playbook that I’ve ever worked on.. not it doesn’t concern me at all.

Coach says the locker room arrangement doesn’t go by position because he wanted to break up the idea that it’s offense vs. defense. Says he wants guys to be around more than just their position group throughout the day.

Captains represent the players, Coach says. The way we approach it here is the players vote for who they want to represent them. It was a point system and the highest resounding point winner was Tua.

That’s the making of a special individual. The football world is in front of him. That’s great news for the Miami Dolphins when there’s an alignment between talent and respect.

Coach on the team’s DL/Edge depth: by far my favorite position is DL and edge. They can be the most impactful players on the field outside of the QB.

Makes sense given how deep the Dolphins are in this area.

Dolphins and Steelers have the fewest PS signings (8) all other teams are close to being done. What are we waiting on? Did the bottom of our roster suck so bad that we have to evaluate everyone else’s scraps before we fill up ours?

    — Asked about the battle for the starting cornerback job opposite Xavien Howard with Byron Jones off the active roster, McDaniel says it does no good to reveal who might have the edge at this point.

    — McDaniel reveals that his favorite position in football “by far” is the defensive line and the edge. Adds that it really can impact the game. “I’m of the belief that you can’t have too many of those guys.” And the Dolphins do have a lot of them with Phillips, Ingram, Van Ginkel and newcomer Trey Flowers.
