Season begins in 9 days – Season Preview

Both Chris Grier and Mike McDaniel have done the preliminary work and have assembled the 53 man roster. The trade for one of the top WR’s in the NFL (Tyreek Hill) left the Dolphins quite short in the 2022 NFL Draft as we relinquished our 2022 1st RD, 2nd RD and 4th RD picks, as well as 2023 4th and 6th RD picks. The good news is that in addition to acquiring Tyreek Hill, 3rd RD pick LB Channing Tindall , 4th RD pick WR Erik Ezukanma and 7th RD pick QB Skylar Thompson have all made the 53, and 7th RD pick LB Cameron Goode was signed to the practice squad. There is a very different feel to this season, especially after seeing the offense erupt against the Eagle is PS game 3. Of course it’s just a preseason game, but it was the first glimpse of what can be accomplished with the talent we have and a scheme that can really open up this offense.

Now that I’ve commended both Grier and McDaniel, now the job rests firmly on the shoulders of Mike McDaniel. I can’t emphasize enough how important it was to bring back the entire defense intact, including the DC Josh Boyer, although I understand that many feel the defense was run by former HC Brian Flores. The significant point is that Boyer will continue with the same defensive scheme, with the same roster. One caveat is that CB Byron Jones will be absent for the first 4 games as he remains the PUP list, so CB Nik Needham will need to fill some big shoes for 4 games. Of course with Needham being thrust into the starting spot, the depth will move up as well, which means CB Noah Igbinoghene will be getting a lot more snaps, and will likely rotate with Needham inside and out. Iggy did not have a great preseason, but with injuries to Byron Jones and Trill Williams (IR), Iggy will have an opportunity to show his value. Igbinoghene, a former first RD pick is a very good athlete, but his cover skills haven’t really developed as the Dolphins have hoped. Iggy is still a young player, he’s 22 and was drafted as a raw talent at 20 years old, much like his draft mate LT Austin Jackson, who was also selected in the 1st RD of the 2020 draft.

While McDaniel assembled his staff, he brought in a lot of experienced coaches from around the NFL. His ego didn’t get in the way when he brought in former HC Darrell Bevell, and having continuity leaving the former DC Josh Boyer in place, allowing former OL coach Lemuel Jeanpierre, former RB coach Eric Studesville to continue in their jobs. Frank Smith our offensive coordinator has been an offensive coach for many years as an OC in college to OL Coach with the Saints and Tight Ends coach with the Bears and then holding Mike McDaniels post, running game coordinator with the Los Angeles Chargers in ’21. I really liked the way he put the staff together, and I also think Wes Welker is a great WR coach, as Welker spent his entire NFL career overachieving and learning the correct way, the best way to do things and perfecting them, and he can now impart this wisdom and attitude to all the talent we have at receiver. There are high expectations for this team, and Mike McDaniel as both architect and steward, will have a huge impact on how far this team goes.

With the 53 roster in place, let’s look at some surprises. If I told you 4 months ago the starting 5 WR’s on the Miami Dolphins would be Tyreek Hill, Jaylen Wadle, Cedrick Wilson Jr., Erik Ezunkanma and Trent Sherfield you’d probably laugh. Ezukanma, 4th RD draft pick this year showed he’s got the makeup of an NFL WR. He may not have the speed of Devante Parker, but he’s got the size and competitiveness that Parker has, and hopefully he’ll be a healthier, stouter version of Parker. Trent Sherfield is another bigger receiver who has not played as a receiver all that much, but is a ST’s guy who has played for the Niners in ’21 and the Arizona Cardinals for 3 seasons prior. The talent (and hopefully availability) of this WR corps should be considerable better than last year ( Waddle, Parker, Hollins Albert Wilson, Preston Williams and Jakeem Grant. Besides Waddle, you couldn’t on most of the other guys to play week in and week out with the exception of Mack Hollins, and then of course talent wise, it’s not close.

Will Mike McDaniel’s version of the Shanahan offense make our O-line into and average or better unit in ’22? That’s one of the biggest questions, and the answer may well determine how successful this team is this season. Terron Armstead is an excellent LT when healthy, top 5 in the NFL. LG Liam Eichenberg had his struggles last season, but I think he’s got the talent to get things right this season. Connor Williams from the Cowboys steps in at C and I think his presence and Armstead’s as well make Eichenberg a better player. Sometimes, your as good as the guy next to you. RG Robert Hunt returns and he was a bright spot on the O-line all season. Again, playing next to Williams will make him better, and then the line finishes with RT Austin Jackson. Some fans just hate this guy but he’s a young, raw, talented athlete. Like I previously mentioned, like CB Noah Igbinoghene, Jackson was a 20 YO draftee. This outside zone blocking scheme is a better fit for Jackson who is not a physical mauler. He has tons of athletic ability with good size and arm length and he should be a better player in this scheme.

On defense, the one concern I have is carrying only 5 trench guys, Ogbah, Wilkins, Davis, Sieler, and Jenkins. If everyone stays healthy, I like that Sieler gets more reps, he’s a heckuva player and could probably start on a bunch of other teams. We do have a lot of big LB’s that will move up on the line in speed rush packages like Melvin Ingram, Trey Flowers, Jalean Phillips, AVG etc. We’ll start the season with Baker and Roberts inside, and Phillips and either Ingram or AVG on the outside. I’m curious to see how ILB Channing Tindall progresses and if he can earn more playing time and steal some from both Roberts and Eguavoen. In addition to that, w/o Byron Jones, how will this secondary, which has long been a strength of this defense, handle the loss of Jones? Will Melvin Ingram and Trey Flowers, two new additions make an impact on this up and coming defense? The other big question for me are who are the returners? Is it Mostert, Waddle, Hill, Edmonds, and/or Igbinoghene? Most likely it will be combination of all of the above, using Hill in only certain circumstances to give the return game a jolt. We must keep Hill healthy because he’s such an important part of the offense.

I have to admit I’m surprised about the 4 RB’s on the roster. I was pretty sure either Sony Michel or ZaQuandre White would be in the RB stable, instead, 2 guys who just keep pushing are back, Myles Gaskin and Salvon Ahmed. Let me say that neither of these guys make things w/o space, and neither guy runs over defenders. What they both do well is given a crease and some space get going quickly, and both catch the ball very well. We’ve seen both play behind a poor O-line, both can definitely succeed with better O-line performance. Raheem Mostert who has had trouble staying healthy may be the lead back, he’s just super fast and is a HR threat every time he touches the ball. Chase Edmonds is a bit heavier version of Gaskin and Ahmed, who both top out at about 195, where Edmonds is about 210. None of the backs in our RB corps are or have been lead backs that carry the load for an entire season and Raheem Mostert has the highest season yardage total (2019 SF 49ers) at 772 yards on 137 carries for a special 5.6 YPC, with ZERO game starts. So what we have brought in is the prototype for a running game by committee approach. All of these guys are capable players but none are a Derrick Henry type or Ezekiel Elliott type who require a high volume of carries each and every game. There are benefits to this, you’re not relying on any one guy, and you can plug in any of these guys at any time. It will be interesting to watch!

You folks traveling due south from NY/NE need to remember about how much more direct the sun’s rays are down here. The earth is very flat here, and sunshine does not hit us at much of an angle, so sunburn can happen in a half hour of exposure.

Palm trees are beautiful, but they don’t give much shade, and there are no hills to help, but fortunately, Ross built those big sunblockers above the field to mitigate the radiation damage to our skin.

Dolphins number switches from Masala. Guess just like with money….. you can’t take your number with you.
    ——————

Miami Dolphins rookie linebacker Channing Tindall, who was the team’s first draft pick in 2022, got No. 51 when he arrived in South Florida after wearing No. 41 during his collegiate career at Georgia. No. 41 was being worn by linebacker Darius Hodge, but Hodge was recently released during the roster cutdowns.

Erik Ezukanma, another Dolphins rookie, is also changing his number. While he wore No. 84 and No. 13 at Texas Tech and had been wearing No. 87 in Miami, he’ll be wearing No. 18 going forward. That number was previously held by Preston Williams.

Undrafted rookie tight end Tanner Conner, who had been wearing No. 48 in the preseason, is switching back to his collegiate number – No. 80, which was held by tight end Adam Shaheen. Shaheen is on season-ending injured reserve after knee surgery.

One player that’s changing their number that isn’t a rookie is running back Myles Gaskin. Gaskin had worn No. 37 during his time in Miami, but he’s moving on from that and is switching to No. 3. Lynn Bowden Jr. had worn No. 3 this offseason, and Will Fuller donned it last season.

Our current roster is stacked with talent… from elite rookie talent to vets who still have fuel in the tank on BOTH sides of the ball. And this has come from a rook HC in Mike McDaniel who specializes in the running game.

If Tua doesn’t even marginally improve (oh, but he WILL!!! Money back is GUARANTEED!!!), we’re a playoff team this year.

I believe our O-Line will now become a STRENGTH under Coach McDaniel and company, paving the way for our RBs to keep our opposition honest when it comes to our aerial assault.

Tua is the key, and that key has been forged by FIRE.

The problem we should see with opponents trying to cover Hill is that it opens it up for Waddle. Same type of player. Hence my Duper/Clayton comparison. 🙂

Though we haven’t seen Waddle in the PS, reports from TC were that he’s lining up outside more and doing more vertical stuff. Those two flying around is going to open up the underneath stuff. Then when they miss one time it goes to the house.

I’m very excited to see it.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Let’s see Belicheat* try to double-cover Reek the Cheetah, allowing Waddle, Wilson, or Gesecki in single-coverage…

Or better yet… run Reek and Waddle on streaks as we simply hand the ball off to any one of our fast RBs…
      😀

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

That’s going to be the difference because we have the over the top threats now. We really couldn’t do that in recent years. Teams always had DBs hawking Waddle last year. He was the only one they feared to go deep. So we used him underneath almost exclusively. Now they can’t do that.

Wilson, Sherfield and Ezukanma are all new. The WR room was completely revamped other than Waddle. With Hill and Waddle you have the 5-10 185 types who have great quickness and speed. The rest of the group are all bigger WRs. Add Gesicki to that. Good luck! LOL

It’s interesting to see what you get with bottom of the practice squad guys:
    CHRISTOPHER HINTON:

Michigan, 6’3″ 305 5.27. Junior entry, two-year starter, Johns Creek, GA. Earned Honorable Mention All-Big 10 honors in 2021.
Has a natural, functional frame that shows simple straight-ahead power. His easy knee bend helps him win the leverage battle consistently. When he has his hands in the right spot, he will win the lockout game and hold his ground. There is also a good amount of grit and hustle to his game, and it will provide quality secondary pass rush.

    But
There is a lot of stiffness to him, and he still has a lot to develop when it comes to natural flow and rush. He can be a quality backup at the next level in time.

    Why we signed him
Well put together frame with functional thickness throughout. No bad weight anywhere, carries his mass with ease. Violent initial contact with the blocker, showing natural lockout strength and will derive good power from his hips on up. Can play low. Knee bender that is comfortable playing beneath the pads of his opponent. Feisty through engagement that performs well with the secondary rush. Hustler with a consistent engine switch.

Why he got cut from the Giants
Lateral tightness shows up even in a phone booth. Lacks wiggle and left to right twitch. Linear athlete. Needs more refined rush moves. Does not seem to have much of a plan as a pass rusher. Leans into the line and plays slow and hesitant. Poor against the double team, gives up too much ground when working his way laterally against the run.

    2021 stats: 33 T, 1.5 TFL, 1 sack, 2 PBU, 1 QBH, 1 FF.

So who’s going to start at CB for us?
I predict we start Needham and Rowe.
Now whether they move Needham outside and put Rowe in the slot or leave Needham in the slot and put Rowe outside remains to be seen.
I’d do the latter, just so as to keep Needham where he is best and Rowe came into the league at CB, so unless he’s lost a step, he can play that position.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Interesting option with Rowe, but it seems unlikely, unless he’s been getting reps in practice at CB

Needham wasn’t exactly a stud in 2019, he had a high % of passes caught against him in the slot, and the D was still pretty good EOY

From what I saw of Crossen and Kohou, think they can hold down the fort

  38. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS @ MIAMI DOLPHINS
WR Tyreek Hill vs. Patriots cornerbacks
No offensive weapon changes defenses the way Tyreek Hill does. His unique combination of speed and short-area quickness is a constant headache for coaches to try and neutralize. New England has some speed and slot versatility in Jonathan Jones, who ran a 4.33-second 40-yard dash as a prospect, but he recorded just a 51.5 PFF coverage grade last season, and the Patriots are moving away from playing the most man coverage in the league. How New England tries to contain Hill may well be a signal to the rest of the league of how to defend the Dolphins this season.

OR, MORE LIKELY, it will signal to the rest of the league how NOT to try and fail.

    Hmmmmm, I never realized.

The Miami Dolphins are favored to defeat the New England Patriots in the season opener for both teams at Hard Rock Stadium in Week 1, and one certainly could argue that the three-point spread should be bigger.

But the mere fact the Dolphins are favored at all is significant when it comes to this matchup.

Barring a dramatic shift in the line over the next few days, the Dolphins will go into a game against the Patriots as the favorites for the first time since December 2013. That will end a streak of 16 matchups where they were underdogs.

In other seasons when we had bad teams, the H/H didn’t seem to have much effect, but this year with a fast team…

While it’s smart for New England to come down to Florida early, practicing down here won’t prepare them for the speed that they’ll have to keep up with in the heat and humidity.

That’s right, it’s one thing to play in the H/H, it’s entirely a different animal to be chasing Waddle/Hill around all day

I don’t like fighting, especially in the stands at football games,
but “John” the self-appointed dickhead, also has tweets in which he disagrees with a targeting call against a Georgia Tech player, which was described by the announcers and the on-call referee commentator as textbook targeting.

Dickhead also mentions Ohio State’s only victory over Clemson ever, even though Clemson still leads the series by a 4-1 ratio.

John the Dickhead seems to be very jealous of Dabo Swinney’s and Clemson football’s huge success.

      • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

        I agree,
but here’s a look at some ways we should counter zone coverage.

        including

“The dagger concept is run here from the inside of the trip’s formation. The outside slot receiver runs a seam, and the inside slot runs a dig (out route).

This is mostly a zone beater, which is what the Dolphins should see a lot of next year, due to their speed.

But of course, if Hill is left in the middle of the trips, the defense is in for a long day.

Switches, smash, dagger concepts, double posts, and deep overs should be a part of the game plan next year for the Dolphins if they want to move the ball down field with their two speedsters. These concepts are deadly against zone forcing defenders to make a choice on who they want to cover.”

  57. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

There are lots of ways to beat zones, but the QB has to recognize it fast and hit their spots. The idea from the defense is to not get beat over the top and hope that one mistake can stop the drive. When Hill and Waddle are on the field I can’t see teams playing a lot of man.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

If teams show Cover 2 against us we run or try to get quick throws with YAC opportunities. If we are getting 1st downs and moving the ball, we’re going to draw more blitzes and man coverage with more opportunities with speed beating man coverage.

Couldn’t even see out of or into windowed rooms that had air conditioning what with the mass humidity. This is nothing new in certain parts of NEPA, and we have no tradewinds up here (or any winds) to blow this stuff off like Miami due to the mountains surrounding us.

This team has attracted some very good players via FA.

So instead of paying one player through the roof (see Suh, Tanny, Brandon Marshall, etc), we’ve got a TEAM of very good and solid players instead.

So long as Tua stays healthy, this is the year he becomes a top-10 (or top-notch) QB. Write it down and forget about it.

The MSM sports media has it out for Tua to the tune that it’s just ridiculous. ’20 Tua was still recovering from a near career-ending injury suffered in college, then ’21 Tua was trying to recover from broken ribs suffered in week 2 (plus a finger injury).

Must be nice to be Justin Herbert or Josh Allen… we’ll see if they have the sustainability of Tua once they (and they eventually will) suffer a major injury.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Depth at DT isn’t an issue for us like some have mentioned

We’ve got 4 very good players, plus Flowers and Jenkins and maybe even Ingram and others on passing downs

Adding in the LBs and PS, can’t remember a time we’ve been better upfront, from top to bottom

We may have been better at the top with JT, Zach and Bowens, or in the 70s, but not top to bottom

I like the depth in our front 7, we may not need to Amoeba sacks this year, so having Jones out may not wreck the D as in years past, as we can get a regular passrush

With Suh and Co we had lots of 3 and outs, but once that 1st first down was achieved on a drive, we didn’t have the depth to shut an O down

Yesterday, Bill Belichick mentioned the Dolphins blitz their defensive backs more than any team in the league.

Not only is that spot on, but the Fins sent a rusher from their secondary on a quarter of Mac Jones’ dropbacks against them last season

With Jones out, not sure how much we’ll blitz our DBs, guess we’ll just have to see how CBs cover

Most secondary blitzes came from 3-deep “fire zones,” where an on-ball player drops into coverage while an off-ball player rushes.

When NE was in the gun, MIA sent heat to the RB side.

Vs under center looks, they blitzed the consented receiver side where tends to NE run

I see a lot of hedging out there with respect to the Dolphins. “Tua sucks but he’s got a great team around him so they should do really well, but if they don’t it’s because Tua sucks which I told you so.”

Lot of hedgers, except Meshon Johnson

    • ukfinfan's avatar ukfinfan says:

Found this thread to be very interesting from CKP – in it, he makes plenty of valid points in the individual tweets it is comprised of. For anyone who can’t be bothered reading it (and I don’t want to re-open the Tua arm strength debate) the conclusion, more or less, is that whilst a slower arced pass takes longer to get there, the time from the ball being snapped to getting to the receiver is a function of speed of decision making as well as speed of the ball and ball placement is another moving part in the equation of whether a pass is completed or not. In other words, don’t panic. And don’t analyse each individual pass. Unless you have too much time on your hands.

The only team that has a home field advantage due to weather is the Dolphins. Fans literally pass out during afternoon games at hard rock stadium. And they purposely built the stadium so that the sun always shines in the visiting bench & fans. That humidity is no joke

Played in high humidity in a HS football game and it kicked our ass, and that was when I’d only ever lived in Miami

Sunday 60% rain 67% humidity 91°, but if it rains, then the sun comes up…ah pobre sito Cheats

Analysis: Can Tua be The Guy? You can argue no quarterback faces more pressure at the outset of the 2022 season. The Dolphins went all out to put Tua Tagovailoa in position to succeed in his third season, importing a three-time Pro Bowl left tackle in Terron Armstead and pairing 2021 breakout star Jaylen Waddle with the historically productive burner in Tyreek Hill. Add in Mike McDaniel, the team’s new offensive-minded head coach, and anything less than instant results will begin the drumbeat for Teddy Bridgewater to get a crack at the controls.
