2022 Season – Game 9 – Dolphins @ Bears

Before this 2022 NFL season began, the Miami Dolphins were very aggressive bringing in personnel that would potentially transform this team. Let’s be clear, bringing in WR Tyreek Hill most certainly transformed this team. No one here could have predicted how much of an impact Tyreek Hill could have. Even the most optimistic of us fans couldn’t have seen this coming. Our offense has become unstoppable at times, and if not for a multitude of penalties, we’d be scoring even more than we have. Yes, we all figured Hill could make Waddle more dangerous, but it still amazes me how easily Tyreek Hill gets open, and how quickly Tua finds him and gets him the ball. Oh, and Waddle is extremely dangerous. He’s nearly doubled his YPC average from 9.8 last season to 17.3. Halfway through the season he has 5 TD’s after logging 6 all of last season. I’d be remiss to not mention LT Terron Armstead. When he plays, and is healthy enough to play most of the snaps in a game, he’s terrific. He does his job so well, neutralizing the NFL’s best pass rushers and opening rushing lanes on the left side. We knew he’s somewhat of a health risk, and I think most of us figured he’d miss some time, but he was also a huge signing for our team. This brings me to my next point . . .

The Dolphins trading for LB Bradley Chubb was a huge move. Yes, we’ve already brought in LB’s Melvin Ingram and Trey Flowers, and hopefully those 2 still play a big role on our defense, but Bradley Chubb is a very talented player that is only 26 years old. He’s the type of player that in my mind should transform this defense. We already have a very talented young OLB in Jaelan Phillips. We’ve seen what he can do when someone on the other side is getting pressure, he was a difference maker in the second half of last season. Bradley Chubb should make that happen once again. If Emmanuel Ogbah can get himself healthy, our defense can be vaulted to being one of the better NFL defenses. A healthy front 7 of Wilkins, Davis, Ogbah, Phillips, Baker, Roberts and Chubb can be a great unit. If/when we get some our DB’s healthy, and whether that means Byron Jones or just having Kader Kohou and Keion Crossen and of course X totally healthy, our defense can be a unit that no one wants to play against. 1 player can make that transformation, which brings me to my next point . . .

I want to see lots and lots of Bradley Chubb this weekend. I don’t want to hear any nonsense such as it will take time to integrate him into our scheme. Don’t tell me that! I want him out there at least 75% of the defensive snaps. The few snaps that AVG and Ingram get they should be fired up and ready to make an impact. No assimilation, this is football, not thermodynamics or trying to balance the US national debt! Let the 26 YO kid give it everything he has and if he does, good things will happen!

I’ve said it on the blog already, I’m really excited we acquired Chubb. He hasn’t been a dominant player, and he was playing on a pretty good Denver defense. No player is perfect, but Chubb was a very highly rated prospect (7.4 which equated to a perennial All Pro), and there’s a reason for that. He’s a very capable player, but injuries have hampered his success. His rookie season was a great one, starting all 16 games and playing nearly 80% of the snaps on defense. He had 12 sacks, 21 QB hits, 2 FF’s, 1 FR and 60 combined tackles (41 solo). Since then, he’s yet to duplicate that success, but he had 2 seasons where he played only 4 and 7 games. Chubb already has 5.5 sacks and if he stays healthy, he should equal or surpass his rookie season in our defense. This team needs to have a different feel about it, a little swagger. Of course success would help, and last week’s second half shutout was great to see. The defense has to be hyped. It’s set up so nicely, if Trey Flowers (IR Oct. 19)) can get healthy, we’d have 2 excellent veteran pass rushers to put in the rotation in Melvin Ingram and Trey Flowers. That’s the stuff playoff and SB teams are made of. At this point of his career, you want Ingram used sparingly, and I believe he’ll be more effective. Let Phillips and Chubb handle 70-75% of the snaps and let the vets get the rest, and all should prosper. I want to see Chubb have the Hill effect on our defense!

You and I must have different definitions of dominant

What I saw of Denver’s D this year was a dominant D, that made Os have to work extremely hard to move the ball, I even posted that here after watching them play 3 games

Chubb was the main guy, that made that D so tough

Let’s see how they look going forward without him

20.6m average salary for Chubb with some outs, but if we don’t retain him for next year it would’ve cost 33m for 9 games, if they do then 53m becomes the full guarantee

We could then pay as little as 54m for 2 years plus 9 games and move on

  16. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Chubb should be a Fin thru 2027 season, with Phillips and Ogbah, we should have a very good 4 man passrush for a long time or Ogbah could be gone in 2024

That write got me excited Mike E, but then had to remind myself that haven’t seen Chubb play a down yet and we didn’t exactly blow out two teams with pretty poor records in the last couple games.

    Let’s see what happens.

  21. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Have we gotten past the use of Cover Zero?
Was it the defensive match to when we used the Wildcat
to beat NE back with Ronnie?

    Was it just a gimmick?

I’m asking because it worked against Goff and the Rams, against Book and the Saints, and against Lamar Jackson. It should work against Fields and the Bears’ shaky coach.

But maybe we’ve “grown up” and don’t need it anymore.

Now that we have Chubb, maybe we go forward with a more conventional rush. Maybe we can get pressure with just rushing 4.

btw, This is a good game to have so as to integrate 2 new guys in.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

We used a bunch of cover zero in the first half of lions game

And we stunk it up and switched to mostly cover 3 for 2nd half

I wouldn’t call it a gimmick, but maybe a little more help deep consistently would help our defense

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Cover-0 requires 2 shutdown corners or at least pretty good ones, we haven’t had that this year, to use it effectively

2nd half against Detroit we changed it up more zone I believe

Once Byron is back we’ll be able to utilize it better

We may still see it from time to time on 3rd downs

  23. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

The problem with the cover zero is you have to get pressure, and you also need to have guys that can cover. We haven’t been consistent on either of those, so the scheme is only as effective as the players playing in it. Due to the secondary being decimated and the inability of our front 7 plus blitzers getting to the QB, failure is imminent

    And that wasn’t easy.

What is this new “Field Safety” position?
ppl saying Jevon now playing that,
to take over for Brandon Jones,
for whom McDaniel might’ve invented it.

I’m not expecting much from Gesicki, but I’d rather root for him over Tyler Conklin or Evan Engram

An ILB to keep an eye on if he enters the draft is Junior ILB Cedric Gray, UNC. He is 6’2 230.

    As a starter in last 20 games, he has 200 tackles, 1 sack, 3 FF, 4 INT’s. Today he had 16 tackles, 1 sack and 2 PD’s.

Speaking of UNC, come college bowl time, next year and the year after, you are going to hear a lot about UNC true freshman QB Drake Maye.

He’s 6’4 220. In 9 games he has completed 71% of his passes for 2,964 yards with 31 TD’s and only 3 INT’s. He has also ran 114 times for 513 yards and 4 TD’s.

Generally speaking… I said GENERALLY speaking(! And over the course of the last 20 awful seasons!)… I’ve been able to get the position correct of who we’ll select in the next Draft a year early. And no, I’m certainly not alone, either. This process helps me to scout targets in real-time a year prior.

Wow! It’s not that we don’t have 1st rounder any longer after trading for Chubb, it’s that we don’t have many glaring weaknesses any longer. MOST refreshing!

Right now, as in the HERE AND NOW, we’re weak at the DB position. Yet, next year, we’re going to be getting some young and promising studs back from injury. I could even roll with Steve in saying that we could completely restructure Byron Jones’ contract to keep him with us. Thus, CB just might not be our target next year, but who knows?

Quick hits from me to look for in the college game this year, in no particular order…

    – TE: Do we bring Gesicki back next year? If not, it would be prudent to draft one with our 2nd rounder in the ’23 Draft. Sorry, but Hunter Long ain’t workin’ out for us.

    – OT/OG: If we can do better than/upgrade from our current personnel, it’s worth it to protect the Tua. It would seem as though CW has locked down an NFL top-5 Center spot on our O-Line.

    – DF7: If we can do better than/upgrade from our current personnel, it’s worth it to pressure the QB and stop the run.

    – CB: Xavien Howard isn’t forever as he’s struggled with bad knees in the past and now bad groins. We’ll see what happens upon Byron Jones’ return. Iggy ain’t a stud boundary CB, sadly. Our young studs could step up, yet maybe not.

BPA, IMO, will absolutely dictate the ’23 Draft.

      Sleeper: QB.

Teddy Bridgewater/Betty Treadwater won’t be here next season. Skylar Thompson (a round 7 pick) has shown incredible promise but is he truly the future?

What IF we upgraded from him using say our 2nd rounder on a QB? Fact of the matter is that Tua is now injury prone.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I wouldn’t say we’re weak in the secondary because lots of lesser known guys have stepped. But we’ve had a lot of casualties to our core. You can’t predict injuries. Trill Williams looked like he might have been a gem UDFA. Of course he got hurt. Needam has been a consistent 3rd corner for us for a few years. He goes down. Brandon Jones was a player on the rise at safety. He goes down. Byron Jones has not healed well. That’s tough stuff.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

But that’s why I stated, “in the here and now”, man. Come next season, we just might not need to focus on DB whatsoever, or even via the Draft. 🙂

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I get that and I’m talking about now too. The trade for Bradley Chubb was to not only combat issues this year, but he’s a player that can help us make a run the next few years because we’re setup for that. Sometimes you have to strike when the time is right.

We don’t have the secondary that we thought we were going to have. So now we need more pass rush. I agree, we’ll be in the market for DBs in the offseason.

Run the ball and play defense. I think the trade for Jeff Wilson could be the unsung hero move that was exactly what we needed to play down the stretch.

The bears are one of the worst run defenses in the league

        Jeff Wilson stats this year.
        92-468 5.1 41lg 2TD
        10-91 9.1 16lg

We didn’t trade for a guy who was meh. He was trending for 1,000 yards rushing. Now he pairs up with Mostert again when they shared the carries for SF. It’s the perfect fit.

        Raheem Mostert stats this year.
        101-452 4.5 25lg 1TD
        13-97 7.5 18lg 1TD

Did Chris Grier and Co. add a pass rusher and a RB to change the dynamic down the stretch? A team’s best friend is to rush the passer and run the ball. Tua and the passing game is there. They’re setting records believe it or not. 🙂
