The RECORD for league average for touchbacks on kickoffs occurred in 202 at 61%.

Sanders hit 75% in 2022. (7th highest) Sanders is much better than average.

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

Ever since they advanced the ball 10 yards as part of the settlement to the concussion lawsuits the kickoff return game has disappeared league wide. Often times when there is not a touchback it is by design on theory that you can pin them deeper than the 25

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

Look at kickoff return numbers and how they have dropped precipitously

      • Ken's avatar Ken says:

In 2020 the Broncos were 31st in the league, allowing an average of 30.0 yards per kickoff return. Only the Bucs were worse. For comparison, the Dolphins allowed 15.7 yards per kickoff return. In 2019 the Broncos allowed 26.8 yards per kickoff return, which was 29th.

Two points that need to be made. In 2020, the league set a record for touchback percentage at 61.2 percent. That means that three out of every five kickoffs resulted in a touchback. Compare this to 2003 when only 7.3 percent of all kickoffs resulted in a touchback. The league has been above sixty percent for the last three years.

      • Ken's avatar Ken says:

The reason for this lies in the 2016 rule change that brought touchbacks on kickoffs in the NFL out to the 25 yard line instead of the 20. Couple this with the rule change from 2011 that moved the spot for kickoffs from the 30 to the 35 and you make it much easier for every place kicker to kick the ball five to ten yards deep into the end zone.

However, if a team is confident in its kickoff coverage team, it has a chance to make the opposing offense start with a spot worse than the 25 if the kicker kicks the ball to the one (and the team covers well).

  5. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

I am not ready to move on from Sanders.
I don’t want to destabilize the position.
I’ve seen where teams are cycling through 2 or 3 players
in the second half of a single season,
which just causes a ripple effect of anxiety and confusion.

All place kickers are sons of bitches.
I’d rather have the son of a bitch we know,
    OUR SOB,
    than some random SOB
who was working for FedEx in Iowa till we called him back into the league.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

The worry I have with Sanders is he struggled last year too. He had a great season in 2020 when he was all pro. Not sure what his issue is with shorter FGs and Xpts. Kickers aren’t always going to make 50+ yarders and we’ve seen Sanders make a bunch of them. But missing the shorter ones is a concern.

    btw
Pittsburgh beat New Orleans. Saints must be really bad.
I hate the Saints coach, so maybe he’s part of the problem.

  8. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

    Ken
That is the same site I was citing to support my contention that Sanders is way above the league average, the HIGHEST of which is just 61.2% whereas Sanders hits touchbacks at 75%.

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

It is really not as statistically significant when consider that pre rule change the league average was 7.3% and now it is over 60%. The KO return is going the way of the dinosaur. You can find kickers who can routinely get touchbacks. We need a kicker who can make FGs and extra points. You want stability at the position. The problem is we currently don’t have that

  9. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

I would like us to see if we would want to hit those popup hang time kickoffs which are like punts. Maybe we could induce return guys to take a risk and come up short of the touchback line.
But that would require really good ST coaching, which I am not sure we have.

  10. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

I don’t see the huge crisis.
Sanders does not have a history of erratic kicking.

    Sanders missed 1 PAT in 2018, 1 PAT in 2019, none in 2020, 1 in 2021.
    That’s 3 in 4 years.

    That’s 1 out of 36, 1 out of 30, none out of 36, 1 out of 35.

He has missed 3 out of 30 this year, so that’s not good.

But even with 2 misses last game, he is hitting PATs at 96 and a half %.

Last year he was 7th in the NFL in PAT %age. At over 97%

  11. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

I still find it amazing that Tua is hitting on 78% of his passes over a 7 + game sample.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

      71% which is still great.

You know the play that I was happy to see yesterday, when he recovered the high snap he just went down and didn’t put himself in harms way. Live for another play.

  12. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Sanders extra points kicks don’t bother me too much. He’s been very reliable there, and he clearly has a case of the yips (or whatever it’s called). My problem with Sanders is he really hasn’t been that good in FGs the majority of his career.

He was good his rookie year at 90%, but he only kicked 20 fgs that year and his long was 50.

He was really good in year 3 (2020) at 92.3%. He was a top 3 kicker in the league that year.

He’s been between 74-76% his other three years (including this year), which is not good in today’s NFL.

So he’s had one good year in his last 4 years and two good years out of five in his career.

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

But, he’s still better than some teams kicker situations. I’d rather have an average kicker than a shitty one. I wouldn’t call Sanders shitty, and there isn’t a better option mid-season, but I want to see competition next year.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

The alarming thing with him this year is he has already missed 4 FGs and 3 Xpts. I’m sure it bothers him more than anyone else though.

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Yeah, I think he’s definitely in his own head right now, and that is why we’re seeing the missed pats. Hopefully he gets his head right before he costs us a game.

  13. boulderfinfan's avatar boulderfinfan says:

Since getting chubbs the Fins D has been getting real pressure on the QB drop back 44% of the time with only a 4 man rush.

  14. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

I will miss the team playing this weekend but glad they can get the rest and get healthy.

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

It’ll be a little rough not getting a game, I’m just glad we get to marinate with a win instead of a loss. Makes the week a hell of a lot more fun, AND we still get to root for our team to move into the #1 seed in the conference this week 🙂

      • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

What sucks is the stej can take 1st back with a win this week
        Do they play the pats?

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Yeah, if the Jest win, we move down to #2 in the division and #5 seed in conference. They are at the Pets.

If the Jest lose in NE and the Chiefs lose at Chargers, we’re #1 seed, lol.

  15. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

We very well might be in third place in the Div when we come back from the bye.

Bills have the Browns this week and the Lions next week

Next Monday we might be going boo-hoo again

  16. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Maybe Ogbah being out won’t be as big a hit as I feared.

“Ogbah played a season-low 25 defensive snaps against Chicago, the Dolphins’ first game after acquiring Chubb.”

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

He was injured, came back and got hurt again, this time for the season. We rotated Jenkins and Davis a lot yesterday at NT with Wilkins and Sieler playing a lot at DE/DT. Ogbah played DE/Edge. Chubb, Phillips, Ingram and Van Ginkel are the edge guys now. We need Trey Flowers to get healthy and contribute.

  18. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Do you guys want us to go get another DE like Deforest Buckner?

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Not sure how we’ll approach the bye with some of the injuries we’ve had to deal with. I also think this bye week will be an evaluation of what we do well and don’t with who we have. I think the run game with the addition of Wilson is going to become more prominent. Having Ingold and Smythe healthy plays a big role in that. If we can build on the running game we displayed yesterday our offense is going to be very difficult to stop.

It looks like the Miami Dolphins are doing what they can to bring a home field advantage to Hard Rock Stadium. I’ve had 2 Fins fans who R season ticket members who’ve been informed they are not eligible to renew. It appears it’s because they aren’t attending many games.
Right or wrong, there are many people who probably aren’t Dolphins fans who purchased season tickets to resell them which is why so many away fans. The team has a wait list for next season & it looks like they want to get in the Fins fans who can attend many of the games.
But this will hurt the die hard Miami Dolphins fans who bought a full season with the intention of attending many of the games but couldn’t go for one reason or another. It looks like the team is taking a stand and wants Hard Rock Stadium filled with Aqua and Orange.

I think the bye week came at the right time for us. We’re in good shape but we need some guys to get healthy and others to up their games. There will be a 7 game playoff stretch. 4-3 at the least.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I think this bye week is a good time for MM and his staff along with Grier and his staff to put the best team on the field for the stretch run. The moment is now regardless of us losing good players. Most teams are dealing with it. The battle of attrition. That’s what football usually comes down to.

    — Brian Baldinger (@BaldyNFL) November 14, 2022

I love me some Baldy Wyo. He is the personification of the NFL for me. I never heard Art Donovan speak (I’ve got his book and the stories in it are hilarious) – Baldy is a modern day offensive equivalent with a “well-used” face and a voice that sounds like a “life well lived”. This clip perfectly illustrates what this ball watcher missed to some extent as the slo-mo coupled with the analysis reveals so much more. I know it’s the oldest cliche in football, but instead of making a bucket load of mistakes on each play, be they penalties, mis-communication or whatever, now we are getting “a hat on a hat”. But it’s not just on the O line, it’s everywhere on the field. And that’s why so many plays are going for longer gains than they ever did in the past. We are starting to look like the teams we used to envy!!!

Of course the culture starts with the coach.

Tua on head coach Mike McDaniel: “He gets the feel of the players in the locker room. He’s a man of the people. He has no ego.”

And this is what you get:

“I was happy with the way everyone put their head down and was grinding to earn that result,” Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel said of his team’s season-high rushing output in the post match presser.

    Yesterday:

Coach on WR blocking: It’s not a coincidence. You’re breaking these long TDs because guys are committing to the process and having the desire and determination to not let the person they’re in phase with to be a part of the tackle. It’s cool.

Coach on making 2022 a year to remember: You can’t control ultimate outcomes. I’m not worried about that… you get out exactly what you put in. You’ll make 2022 memorable if you and a collection of other induvial decide to invest as much as you’ve ever invested in your craft.

For me though, what he said post-match exemplified in such a simple sentence, why we are now being talked about as a serious threat.

Mike McDaniel: “You can do a ton of really cool things in the National Football League if you somehow get an entire building, an entire roster to move in one direction. And that is way, way easier said than done.” In his first year, though, that’s exactly what he’s done and why we are having this level of success imho.

Yep M – just started the last episode updated on “Cinema” now. Love it. Hooked on all Star Wars stuff since being at college in a Universe a long, long time ago! No spoilers please.

For those not in the know and with a Firestick, Cinema is a brilliant App to load if you have a decent connection speed on the web. It has series and movie links on it, usually multiple links of differing video quality levels but most HD. It can buffer, but it’s free! There is some crossover between Cinema and Mancave on the Platinum App I’ve mentioned on here before – usually feeds are better on Mancave + guaranteed links for VOD.

For example, all Star Wars spin-offs on Cinema, Rings of Power, etc etc. You’d be mad not to get it! I stream absolutely everything now.

    Cinema HD APK Download v2.4.0 & v2.3.7.4 (Official) (cinemahdapkapp.com)

By the way Kong, NFL replay on Platinum is now ad free. It’s on a continuous loop so you can’t choose when to start it, but check it out – it may save you some $ on NFL+ if it gives you what you want? All games on there for a week but only last game for each team available.

Sorry to trash this moment with a Flores comment, but really the man was about him as the “leader” and “dictates” the terms. Leaders don’t dictate, they lead.

    _______________________________________

The sign of a good coach/leader/boss/manager is that he/she makes the whole greater than the sum of its parts. Flores couldn’t do that, MM is doing it right in front of our very eyes.

    https://www.pff.com/news/nfl-miami-dolphins-jaelan-phillips-next-great-edge-rusher

“Phillips has already created more pressures, hurries and run stops through Week 10 of this year than he had all of last year despite playing 132 fewer snaps thus far. And if you dig into the numbers even further, you’ll find that Phillips has really improved over the past month.”

“Since Week 6, Phillips has totaled 28 pressures and four sacks with a 25.4% win rate. That pressure total ranks second over that span, behind only Za’Darius Smith (32).”

“Phillips is also the sixth-highest-graded edge defender in that time (86.0), ahead of Defensive Player of the Year favorite Micah Parsons, who was selected ahead of him in the 2021 NFL Draft. And if you look even further back, he’s the fifth-highest-graded edge rusher in the NFL (88.8) since Week 4.”

Piggy, yes, I wanted us to draft RB Antonio Gibson. He was a RB/WR/PR/KR in college. He’s 6’2 220 and runs a 4.39. He rushed for over 1000 yards last season but is doing more split carries this year.

I feel if he was in a different system much like the zone system he played in at Memphis, he would be putting up much bigger #’s.

Plus, they have Brian Robinson now. He is more of a pounding RB Washington likes.

Love how he’s wearing his SB ring. I hope he enjoyed his not so wee dram! Sadly, the group celebrating gets thinned every year by father time and no doubt age restricts group get-togethers too.

My son bought me a replica of HIS SB ring .. plastic but looks cool

2 weeks ago we were wondering how the DE/Edge snap counts would be distributed, this week it’s who’s going to replace Ogbah

Seems we played 7 without Chubb and didn’t have a problem, we can play 7 without Ogbah, he wasn’t doing much anyways

The passrush of Ingram, Chubb, Phillips and Wilkins had a party at times at the QB, I expect to see that a lot more next 7 weeks +

“ Here at PFF, you’ll often see our social team pose the question, “Who’s stopping this offense?” When Tua is playing as he has over the past two weeks with a 95.4 passing grade, when Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle are healthy and when Mike McDaniel is dialing it up, the answer is: no one.‘

Bill Belichick’s belief that a good coach can be moved to any position — even if his primary background is on the other side of the football — is being put to the test. One of Belichick’s primary concerns has to be that QB Mac Jones, after a promising rookie season, hasn’t taken the expected Year 2 jump. Belichick thinks highly of Patricia, who will likely always have a spot on his staff, but the results to date spark questions about whether Patricia’s current position is the right fit. — Mike Reiss

Whatever happened to the Mac vs Tua debate🤣

  79. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

We’ve been good against RBs rushing at about 75 ypg, horrible against 5 QBs 404 yards, 240 ypg passing against is ok , 21st in yards 22nd in pts

Pts are somewhat skewed, because we’ve scored a lot, so teams have to keep up

Have we finally turned the corner on D?

Or was last week an aberration?

Absolutely Krishna. In Flores’ day, it seemed like every man for himself, and to say we were rarely on the same page as a team would be an understatement. Now we seem to be operating like a collective. In some ways it reminds me of the Borg from Star Trek. No co-incidence that their motto was “resistance is futile”. 😉

I can see clearly that you and I are on the same wavelength, my friend! Star Trek: The Next Generation is one of my very favorite series ever created. I’m back to rewatching it nightly after about a decade of not viewing it. I’d purchased all 7 seasons on DVD two decades ago and it’s quite the pleasure to revisit it.

I’ve always thought that the franchise should bring back or revisit some of the baddies from the past. For instance: the being that took Tasha Yar’s life in season 1.
