2022 Season – Week 14 – Dolphins @ Chargers

We’re getting down to the nitty gritties. Week 14, huge Sunday Night Football matchup against the AFC West LA Chargers. Tua vs Herbert. The Dolphins took a step back last week, while their opponent this week also took one on the chin, losing to the LV Raiders 27-20, and seriously damaging their playoff chances. Realistically, this is a must win for both teams, every game is important now with 5 games to go. This is the reality of the NFL. Every game is a big game, and this stretch of 5 games is the time when you make your push to be a high seed or slide down in the standings and either back into the playoffs or create a scenario where you end up with a string of road games in the playoffs as the 2nd or 3rd wildcard. I think we’re better than that, so hopefully the team plays like it.

Time to purge the bitter taste of last week’s loss to the Niners. Let me preface this by saying I love Tua Tagovailoa, I’m happy he’s my QB, and I have always been a staunch supporter and defender of him. Despite that, he played pretty poorly last week, and played a big part in why we lost. There are many other reasons, but to state it as simply as possible, if he played like he’s played all season long, we win this game easily. To be fair, Tua has set a high bar of performance, so when I say he played poorly, that’s in comparison to what he’s done all season. If you look at stats alone, they tell some of the story, with the 2 INT’s jumping off the page. It was so much more than that though. He missed on so many throws, throws that he’s placed on the money, or close to it all season, but this past Sunday, they were either underthrown, overthrown, thrown behind, or thrown short. It’s clear he wasn’t comfortable out there, he didn’t have his best protection with LT Terron Armstead out. On the other hand, a lot of these throws were not under duress, he was just off. This season, Tua has been near 70% completion in the majority of the games, and he was below 50% for a decent part of this game. He finished just above, 18 for 33 for 295 yards, 2 TD’s, and 2 INT’s. I so wanted Tua to come out and have a statement game, that I’m ready to play in the big games, and the disappointment of him not measuring up is palpable.

The fact that this is a team game, which it clearly is, means that Tua was not the sole reason why we lost. Inexplicably, we ran the ball 8 times. Oddly enough, it was Raheem Mostert who was OUT with an injury the previous week that got 7 of the carries, and our supposed lead rusher, newly acquired Jeff Wilson Jr. saw only one carry. It’s puzzling because it was obvious Tua was off, and not comfortable, throwing at odd angles and not throwing that calm, catchable ball thrown with anticipation and excellent placement, so why give up on the run game? We’ll never know, but it was a strange gameplan, one which led to a very lopsided TOP, 40:34 for the Niners, 19:26 for the Dolphins. Recipe for disaster to have the opposing team have the ball for twice as long as you do, unless of course it’s the Dolphins vs Colts with Peyton Manning at QB on MNF. Our special teams have been lacking all season, and that’s kickoff coverage, punt return coverage, and FG’s as well. We’ve been poor at all of the above. Jason Sanders is at 81% on FG’s, and an absolutely unacceptable 91.4% on extra points. P Thomas Morstead has been fine, he hardly punts anyway with MM wheelbarrowing his balls on the field and going for huge 4th down conversions. If you watch all the games, you understand my angst, we never get the return man down for a loss, and most times we’re allowing big returns. That needs to get fixed.

The defense was up and down. I can give the defense a little pass, only because the ultra talented CMC is so difficult to stop, and I’m sure LB Duke Riley would prefer to never again have to cover CMC on 3rd down, 4th down, or any down. I mean were playing against a 2022 7th RD pick, QB Brock Purdy, and although we harassed him occasionally, he stepped up and made some big throws, which is another reason in my mind that Tua failed us. Purdy seemed more confident and fired up than our own QB.That was tough to swallow. It didn’t hurt Purdy that we had to try and cover CMC and failed miserably almost every time, he’s so good. The Niners are not bereft of talent beyond CMC, Deebo Samuel hurt us, Brandon Aiyuk did as well, but CMC did the most damage, rushing for 66 yards, and catching 10 balls for 80 yards and a TD, and torturing us as he converted what seemed like every big 3rd or 4th down. One of the biggest stand out stats : 3rd Down conversions – MIA 0-7, SF 8-19. We were unable to convert one stinking third down. Pathetic! That’s on everyone, including MM. Add in 4th down conversions, the Dolphins were a total of 1-9 on 3rd and 4th combined.

This week we play a desperate Los Angeles Chargers team in their house, well, sort of their house, they share the stadium with the original owners, the LA Rams. at 6-6, a loss would surely have them out of the playoff picture. Our Dolphins, not as much, although as I mentioned before, this is the time when the contenders stand up and make their push, and the pretenders slip away. In other words, this game is big for us too. We’re 3-3 on the road this season, the Chargers are 2-3 at home. Let me say this, Austin Ekeler is an awful lot like CMC, he is amazing in the passing game, and will torture us just like CMC if we don’t get help and/or pressure on Justin Herbert and maybe slide some help to whomever is covering Ekeler, most likely Duke Riley. Ekeler is the leading receiver in receptions, followed by WR Josh Palmer, who is having a nice season. Mike Williams has missed 4 games, and was inactive the last two, but logged a limited practice Wednesday, and full practice yesterday which leads me to believe he’ll be available Sunday night. For the Dolphins, LT Terron Armstead got in a limited practice yesterday. Chargers All Pro Safety Derwin James is QUESTIONABLE with a quad injury, and has not practiced this week. For the Chargers, the always steady WR Keenan Allen and WR DeAndre Carter are the other receivers we have to deal with. I stress once again, RB Austin Ekeler is the guy that worries me most. He’s tough to bring down, always fights hard for extra yards, is one of the strongest backs pound for pound, he never goes down easily , and he is a nightmare to cover. I hope Josh Boyer and MM are up to the task this week, and more than anything, I hope we see the Tua we all know and love.

Tua wasn’t himself last week, mostly due to SF’s D, IMO, one of his ints happened when Wilson fell, a couple of overturned calls really did him him too, but if he was himself the TOP wouldn’t have been so lopsided

He did make a lot of good throws too, he just wasn’t as accurate as usual

Don’t expect LAC’s D to bother him as much, so business as usual and if Armstead plays, which I expect our running game will once again click

I haven’t paid attention. Are Mack and Bosa injured? Did they suddenly this year become mediocre?

Was referring to the way the SF LBs were playing deep in coverage

SF Bosa got 3 sacks, but Tua had time most of the game

Great reference Mike E, but unfair comparison. Obviously can’t expect any QB to be that unworldly good. 🙂

It was almost identical Steve (BUF game), but Manning was insane in that game. We had the ball nearly 45 minutes, he still threw for over 300 yards with 2 TD’s, zero INT’s.

We all go through certain stuff. My message to him is just come out refocused and a lot of people forget about what you did last game when you go out here and throw for six touchdowns or something crazy, and it all be forgotten. I’ve dropped a crazy amount of passes in my career, but my whole focus and the way that my parents raised me is you can’t be great and dwell on the past or whatever. You got to be able to move on. Tua has been great about that. He’s definitely a hard worker.”

I swear you send those to Grier …

so he could get his scouts on these guys to see if that matches your eye test.

    • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

      Thanks Naples!

If I can go back and change one, it would be on the second draft, OT Dewand Jones. He is a massive dude, like 6’7 358, and not sure he has the athleticism to play in our scheme. He reminds me of the Pats RT Brown who is like 6’8 380.

I should have went with OT Jordan Morgan again there who is 6’6 328 and VERY athletic. Have not watching any video on him. Just going by what I am hearing and reading. Morgan seems to be a very good prospect for OT projected to go in the 3rd round.

Same with Jaelyn Duncan if he lasts to our pick in the 3rd.

    • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

My top OT’s who may be there in the second round are OT Darnell Wright from Tennessee and OT Matthew Bergeron from Syracuse but they keep going in the top of the second round on the simulator.

  33. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

On the 3rd draft, WR Jalin Hyatt was a luxury pick in a way. I just like the thought of adding yet another 6’0 WR who runs a 4.31 40. It shows on tape. I don’t think he will be a 1st rounder though. He ran a limited route tree at Tennessee and is not a “crisp” route runner. That all can be fixed, though. We would not lose any threat of speed when Hill or Waddle are taking a rest.

  34. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Breakdown after breakdown I’ve watched, they all say the same thing, and it was the way I felt after the game. We left so many plays out on the field, we showed this offense can score on anyone.

“I’ve never seen anybody do to this 49er’s defense what the Miami Dolphins did in this past game.”

“There was more open receivers and big plays to be had than any game I can remember in the Kyle Shanahan era.”

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

And hopefully, if there were to be a next time, every call, non-call, and review by the refs won’t go against us.

I didn’t see it mentioned on the board, but on the play Waddle got hurt, it looked to me like he got hit by the Niner defender about 3 yards out of bounds- no flag.

  35. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Effing NFL moving our Bills game to Saturday night after a tough west coast trip.

There is already talk about our Jest game in week 18 potentially being another flex, although there are a couple of potentially bigger games depending on how things play out.

It’s good for our team and organization though, to be considered one of the primetime teams. It gets us used to playing in big games with all eyes on us.

We really need to win tomorrow. I think the team is going to be itching to get back out on the field and show the Niner’s game was an abberation.

    Go Dolphins!!!

  36. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Cav, thanks for the video above. That explains it all. Tua was just not on his “A” game. If he was, we win that game. That is why I said the loss was on him and not the defense. We should of had the halftime lead and not the 49er’s and in the 3rd qtr we got the opening stop and then scored a TD. They should have had to play come-from-behind and not us with the rookie QB.

It’s one that got away from us but don’t expect to see that kind of performance again. I think we see the real Tua this weekend.

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

I’d have liked for the defense to show it could stop a 3rd string QB in the big moments, but the truth is we’re going as far as this offense takes us, and the offense didn’t play well. I’m encouraged that our offense is potent enough that it can only stop itself. And with everything that went wrong, we still had a shot to take the lead late in the 4th.

If we go out and beat the Chargers, all is well. This game is much bigger than the Niners game.

  37. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

As long as we beat the Chargers, I kind of hope we do get some weather and freezing cold conditions against Buffalo, so we get a taste of that before the playoffs. We may see it in NE in a few weeks as well.

It’s freakin’ December. Why can’t Erik Ezukanma get on the field?

And if we’re not elevating linemen, Armstead is definitely playing.

    • Tindall and Ezukanma have both been disappointing as far as game day snaps. I guess the reason Tindall was a compensatory 3rd which was in the 4th round range, and Ezukanma a 4th round pick, was because they were not complete players. They are talented physical players, but it seems they need to improve on the finer points of the game. MM does seem to lean more on vets than young players. Hopefully they’re better players and more involved next year.

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

I never thought Tindall was going to be the impact player right away that some on the board thought he’d be. Figured he’d be a project that we might see progress throughout the season, but it looks like even that was aiming a bit too high. I couldn’t even tell you whether or not he’s been on the field at all the last few games

But at least he has gotten on the field. Heck, even Sanders has gotten some snaps. I guess it’s not like we’re hurting at WR, lol, and in my mind Sherfield and Craycraft have proven they belong in the lineup. After flashing in preseason, it’s just a bit disappointing Ezukanma hasn’t even gotten a snap.

Either way, elevating a WR looks like good news for us, and Armstead may be playing tomorrow.

I cannot wait for our game. I am so confident we are going to show up with a great game against the Chargers. Right now my favorite part of being in Hawaii is the Dolphins game starts here around 3 in the afternoon. Woohoo!! lol

Jim Thorpe Award (best defensive back) went to Tre’Vius Hodges-Tomlinson, TCU.

Interesting because he is a small CB 5’9 180 so I was looking past him. He is a projected mid 2nd to mid 3rd round pick. Over the last 3 seasons, he did have 5 INT’s, 3 FF and 31 PD’s. Maybe he is the next Brent Grimes without the baggage.

  51. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Butkus Award (best linebacker) went to Jack Campbell, Iowa. He is the ILB I was talking about a month or so ago. He is a 6’5 246 pound ILB. Only started the last 2 seasons but over his career he has 2 sacks, 3 FF, 3 FR, 5 INT’s with 1 pick 6.

He is still considered a mid 2nd to mid 3rd round pick. His stock may go up though.

I bet Purdy stinks it up today, which furthers the fire Boyer push

  62. Ken's avatar Ken says:

Hulk confused. He no know who to root for in Bills Jets

  63. manitobafinfan's avatar manitobafinfan says:

Holy hell games start early out here 🤪

  64. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

We kind of need Bills to beat the Jets don’t we?

  65. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

What a great throw by Josh Allen. 😏

  66. Ken's avatar Ken says:

Allen missed a wide open Diggs probably would have been a TD

  67. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

If you want the division, you want the Jets, if you’re looking to squeak into the playoffs, you want the Bills

  68. Ken's avatar Ken says:

Fuck it I am rooting for injuries

  69. Rhino's avatar Rhino says:

I’m cheering for Jets, cuz I want the DIVISION.

If we lose to Bills then we take care of the Jets ourselves last game of season. If we can’t beat them to get in, we don’t deserve it.

All in for the division title

  70. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Ken??? The Bills are a game up on us right now, how do you figure? Are you saying if we both win out we win the division because of head to head?

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

Exactly. We have to take care of business next week and we own the tiebreaker. The math gets more complicated in the wildcard race

  71. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

I think it would be better if Bills won and then we beat Chargers and then beat the Bills again next week. That would put us back in the division lead.

This would make us both 10-4 but the Bills will be 2-3 in the division and us 3-1 in the division and both with 2 division games left vs Pats and Jets.

  72. Ken's avatar Ken says:

A Bills loss would not suck either

    • Rhino's avatar Rhino says:

If Fins and Bills enter next week both 9-4 … and we WIN … Bills would need us to lose 2 of our last 3 while they win out in order to get the division.

Next weeks game would essentially be a knockout game for Bills, but a Miami loss we’d still have more opportunities to win the division over the next 3 games.

Bills losing today gives us a huge advantage in winning the division.

  73. Ken's avatar Ken says:

    Allen underthrew that

  74. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Jets CB Gardner is the real deal.

  75. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

It’s 8 o’clock here. I barely know my name, let alone who to root for this early in the morning, lol.

I’m rooting for the Bills…or the jest, idk. Actually, I agree with bbm. We control where we land no matter who wins.

  76. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Love watching Josh Allen get hit

  77. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

WTF Barrios? That’s a Jets play there.

  78. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Both qbs missing throws because of weather, but god forbid Tua misses some throws next week because of weather.

  79. Ken's avatar Ken says:

    Both teams look sloppy 😃

  80. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Ravens up 10-0 on the Steelers

  81. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Hate to see Bills get so confident on D

  82. Ken's avatar Ken says:

Only Cory Davis injured so far. Need more injuries

  83. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

The way I look at it, it’s going to be very competitive to get a good seed in the playoffs. If we lose a couple of games and back in, we’re probably not going anywhere anyway. I hope we play a very strong game tonight and get back on track, and if BUF loses today, they will be the ones with a headache, not us

  84. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

    Steelers strike back! 10-7 Ravens

  85. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Never gets old seeing Allen thrown down hard

  86. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Ken – I think it’s a mindset. Usually the teams that are playing their best at the end of the season are the teams that go far. Teams that back in or get in by the skin of their teeth don’t

  87. Ken's avatar Ken says:

Kenny Pickett In concussion protocol done for the day

  88. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Jets DT Quinnen Williams is living up to his draft hype. Has 11 sacks from the DT position so far this season.

  89. Ken's avatar Ken says:

Let Josh Allen leap more often

  90. Ken's avatar Ken says:

    And get hit more often

  91. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Dang, Allen landed on the wrong elbow at the end of that 1st down run.

  92. New Age's avatar New Age says:

Herbert playing with two backup OTs so that should also help win this game. Chargers find ways to lose and are banged up. This should be a decisive win.

  93. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Browns/Bengals must be a tough battle like the Jets/Bills game. Burrow 3-11 for 22 yards so far.

  94. Ken's avatar Ken says:

    Williams down 😃

  95. Ken's avatar Ken says:
