“Entering this weekend, the Dolphins had a 70% chance of making the playoffs, and a win could’ve catapulted their odds to 89%, according to FiveThirtyEight.

With a loss, however, Miami’s odds have fallen again – this time dropping to just 65%.”

Well SB, hate to break this to ya bud, but our offense is 9th in points scored, and that’s including the 3 games Tua missed, and the 2 eggs we laid on the WC with Tua. The defense on the other hand is 26th in points allowed. The defense never carries the day, it bends a lot, and sometimes doesn’t break, but talking about moral victories, they give lots of those, just no wins.

Last night we had 405 yards to their 454. I mean how many games do you allow 454 yards on defense and expect to win?

    _____

I hate to break it to you, but a history lesson of the team’s season doesn’t address what I said. Our offense failed in the moment plain and simple. You can’t just keep giving the ball back to Josh Allen and not expect him to do something at some point in the game.

-This team has to learn how to win tough playoff type games.
-We need to get some players back in the secondary.
-We need to fill in some missing pieces:
        a good TE
        another piece on the oline
a playmaker 3 down linebacker, and/ or another pass rusher

I don’t think it’s a DONE DEAL that Belicheat will surpass Don Shula’s record of 347 wins in the NFL. ROBERT KRAPP can’t be happy with back-to-back losing seasons!!–And, for the first time in a long time, there will be some empty seats come game time at Gillette Stadium. Belicheat’s W-L record is below .500 in NFL games NOT started by Brady. Meanwhile, Shula’s record in games NOT started by Marino were still well over .500.

    • bookman11's avatar bookman11 says:

Who cares? If he has more wins than Shula, he deserves it.

        Winning by cheating is OK?
        NOT to me.
        ———————-
But I understand your criticism of Shula. I, too, was frustrated by his inability to win a Super Bowl with Marino. But he WON TWO SUPER BOWLS with a very young Bob Griese at the helm. And he achieved the one and only PERFECT SEASON with ancient EARL MORRALL starting 12 of the 17 games that year. Don’t think Belicheat could have come close with Morrall. Often overlooked was Shula’s getting to Super Bowl XVII with David Woodley at quarterback. I had a bird’s eye seat at the Rose Bowl, hoping for a miracle. But John Riggins scored the winning touchdown in the 4th quarter.

It’s to Shula’s everlasting credit that he got THAT team to the Super Bowl.
And Belicheat hasn’t come close since Brady left town and WON A SUPER BOWL in Tampa.

Lost in all this is the fact that Shula also took the Baltimore Colts to a Super Bowl. Maybe, If Belicheat gets fired, HE’LL lead a second team to a Super Bowl, too???

Shula’s loyalty to Olivadotti was the reason, IMO.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

      • randydolfan1947's avatar randydolfan1947 says:

WELL Shula wouldn’t Cheat like the Patriots franchise has. I’m REAL SURE Shula WANTED to win one with Marino. But if it meant subverting NFL rules to do it, well, he would not stoop that low.

So, Mr. Bookman, your criticism of Shula has some merit. BUT he’s STILL the winningest head coach in NFL history and the ONLY NFL COACH with a PERFECT SEASON ON HIS RESUME!!

To me, Don Shula was the greatest coach in NFL history. If you think he’s been a failure overall, then you and I will just have to disagree.

      • randydolfan1947's avatar randydolfan1947 says:

MAYBE, Ken. Steve Ross’s FO has utterly FAILED to address this franchise’s greatest need for about a decade. That being the Offensive Line.

But hope spring eternal with many Dolphin fans, doesn’t it?

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

That’s one of the biggest reasons I didn’t want to make that trade for Chubb. I would have been more on board with that trade if Ross hadn’t fucked us with his meddling.

But we get some experience in tough games this year (hopefully a playoff game or two as well), and we get guys back from injury in the secondary, add one or two players in FA, maybe we’ll it’ll be enough to make a serious run next year.

Who knows, maybe the team surprises us and puts it together the next few weeks and we can make a run, I just don’t think that’s realistic.

  65. manitobafinfan's avatar manitobafinfan says:

  66. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Regarding the argument of is it our offense or our defense? Which one is the bigger problem?

IMO it’s the defense. We give up way too many points early in the game and have gotten worse in redzone defense overall.

The offense has scored 345 points so far this season. That is 3rd best in the AFC behind the Chiefs then Bills. We are ranked 6th overall in the NFL in scoring.

The defense has given up 344 points so far this season. That is tied for dead last in the AFC with the 1-12-1 Texans. There are only 5 defenses in the NFL worse in allowing points and they are all in the NFC.

None of the last 2 games this weekend should affect those numbers.

Our defense just isn’t up to snuff. Yes, our secondary is compromised, but we don’t get to the QB nearly enough without blitzing extra defenders. Hate to say it but I think Raekwon Davis needs to be better, or maybe we just need to get a player at NT/DT. He doesn’t blow up the middle, ever. It was always either Wilkins, Ogbah or Seiler, but Davis is practically invisible
    ——————-
First of all, GREAT comment, IMO! Hadn’t thought about Raekwon in a while being he doesn’t make a lot of noise on the field.

Aside from his sophomore season at Tuscaloosa (8.5 sacks), Raekwon has never recorded more than 1.5 sacks in a season (college or pro). Without looking it up, I’m guessing Raekwon was much lighter in his sophomore season… and he was then asked to put on weight to be a prototypical pro NT.

As an NFL NT, he’s not going to be much of a pass-rusher unless he’s a freak like a young Dontari Poe (obviously not the case). His job is to clog up lanes and shut down the running game… and he’s rather successful in doing as much in the way of a Paul Soliai. Could he be better? I say hell yeah, and he’s still young.

If we want a NT that will additionally rush the passer up the middle, we’re probably looking at an early 1st round pick on a freak athlete.

Raekwon best serves as a 3-4 NT, or a 4-3 NG, IMO… and I don’t think we play him often as the latter. As such, can’t expect him to take on two O-Linemen and destroy like Hulk in the pass-rushing category.

But as a 4-3 NG when O-Lines have to be concerned about a blitzing DT next to him (say, Christian Wilkins)? He has a much better chance of succeeding in a pass-rush sit should they double Wilkins.

Even so, I don’t think Raekwon is fast enough to be that pass-rushing guy at 330 pounds… he’s probably only ever going to be a space-eater like Soliai.

Although I did see Byron Jones on the payroll next season, no shot he’s back, so that will free up some space, but it shows a big dead cap hit for him.

Much less cap hit if it is a designated June 1 cut from what I understand.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

2 years ago they said the 2023 NFL cap was going to be over 300m, which would give us plenty of cap space.

2022 FA the Fins acquired lots of talent with cap hits going to future years, seemingly verifying the caps going way up

Everything I’ve read recently says they need to adjust the cap to make up for lost revenue during covid, so not sure if we get a 300m+ in 2023 or later, but it is going up significantly at some point with the new TV deals

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I’d say Jones is tied to Boyer, if we keep 1 we keep the other

We’ve all bitched about Boyer, but to be fair he really hasn’t had his key lockdown CBs

Should we really kick him to the curb before we give him a fair shot?

  91. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

I assume they have a plan for 2023 forward to continue to build on what we have. Sure we might have some turnover, maybe we lose a couple guys, add some others, but this idea that if we don’t win a SB this year, we’re screwed, I don’t buy that.

I look at our list of free agents, and I see a lot of middle of the roster and bottom tier guys, and a few starters. Does it kill us to lose a Van Ginkel or Riley? What have either of those guys done that is irreplaceable? I know Riley is out there getting beat in coverage every week, and he is supposed to be a cover guy.

We could let 3/4 of those FAs walk right now and pick up similar guys IMO.

The offense should stay mostly the same, minus one giraffe (wouldn’t be surprised to see our entire TE room turned over except for Smythe), maybe we lose some of the oline but I think Shell and Little likely resign, maybe we lose a 3rd or 4th string WR, but shouldn’t Sanders and Ezy-E be ready next year? And maybe Sherfield/ Craycraft take a little less to stay here, because this is where they can actually look good instead of being lost at the bottom of another team’s roster.

Maybe we turn over the RB room except for either Mostert or Wilson. Or maybe we keep both because neither gets a huge contract because they are both always hurt. Or we let one walk and keep the other.

On defense, our dline will remain intact (we need to pay Ingram), and who cares what kind of turnover there is in the secondary? Could it be worse than this year? We have some young cheap guys coming on and should get a couple guys back. Get Byron Jones out of the building and that probably pays for the secondary guys we want to keep.

At LB, sign Ingram, see what Riley, Roberts, and Van Ginkel get offered.

Same thing for Special Teams, could it be any worse than this year, even with some turnover?

If they built this team to be a one shot at a SB run in 2022 and then we’re done and have to scrap it all and start over, then our entire FO needs to be fired. But I don’t think that is the case at all. I think our core team will easily stay intact.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I agree except for Byron, doubt he goes anywhere, his dead money is close enough to next year’s salary, would be foolish to cut him, unless there’s an uninjury related reason he didn’t play this year

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

We’d save over 4 million in 2023, which we may need, and we get out of that contract with no more 2024 deadcap if Jones is cut pre 6-1, but looking at the numbers, it wouldn’t kill us to keep him either.

You may be right in that if we keep Boyer, maybe we keep Jones too. If Jones comes back in good shape, we could do a lot worse than Jones, Howard, Kohou, and maybe Needham (if we resign him).

But the way this has played out, I figure both side are done with each other.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I hate the word save used like this, deferred is a better word

Reminds me of a salesman, that called me to refinance my home

I can save you $200 off of your monthly payment, even though it costs more longterm

If we need 4m we can restructure someone’s contract

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Sorry, I know what you mean, but in this case that is incorrect.

It’s actually saving a minimum of 14 million on what we pay out to him, not deferring.

Cut him pre 6-1: He’s a 14 million dead cap hit in 2023 and that is it. We pay him no more.

Keep him in 2023: we pay him 18 million in 2023, AND then either have to pay him another 18 mil in 2024, or cut him in 2024 and he’s an additional 10 mil dead cap hit. That is a total of 28-36 million, quite a bit less than 14 million.

Cutting him is saving total $$$ in 2023 and 2024, not deferring in any way.

Even cutting him post 6-1 is saving money. He’s still only a 14 mil hit instead of 28-36 mil, we just move 10 mil to 2024.

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

lol, **quite a bit more than 14 million (obviously)

Brutal 3 week road trip is over, thank God. I felt we were beat, but we also beat ourselves on the WC. We got back to playing how we can on Saturday. We’re not there yet, that’s plain for all to see, and it will be interesting to see how CG shape-shifts this roster from yr. 1 to yr. 2 for his new HC. That’s not for the now though.

For the rest of this season, I’m just going to see where the ride takes us. We can score quickly and be physical up front on D. We nearly stood toe to toe with the #1 AFC seed and won on their manor. I hope we dish out a few more bloody noses and broken hearts before our season is over. Will we raise the Lombardi? No. Have we improved, become relevant and are in the conversation. Hell yeah.

Very few teams if any go from diabolical to the top, with no incremental steps in-between. I think we’ve taken the penultimate step this year. The question is, can we find what we need to get us over the top before it’s too late. Time will tell. You can’t be a Dolfan without patience in spades.
