Congratulations #54 – Zach Thomas, Hall Of Fame MLB

I’m so happy for Zach Thomas, one of my favorite Miami Dolphins players, for his well deserved induction into the NFL Hall of Fame. It’s been a long time coming, and they made us sweat it out last night, as there are only 9 inductees each year, and Zach Thomas was the last. As soon as I saw Jimmy Johnson as the presenter, I knew it had to be Zach, and my heart raced in excitement and happiness for him. No doubt Jimmy Johnson was largely responsible for Zach Thomas’ success. JJ drafted Zach Thomas in RD 5 of the 1996 NFL Draft, and later signed veteran MLB Jack Del Rio in June of that same year, perhaps as a mentor to the young LB. Once Jimmy saw Zach Thomas up close and on the playing field, he knew Zach had to be on the field at all times. August 5th of 1996, JJ was aware that Zach was a special player man and released the veteran LB Jack Del Rio. Zach Thomas and JJ never looked back.

Zach Thomas played 12 seasons with the Miami Dolphins, is a 5 time All Pro LB, and a 7 time Pro Bowl LB, and now, finally, a Hall of Fame LB. He played the game with so much enthusiasm throughout his entire career, and although concussions threatened to end his career earlier than he would have liked, Zach did anything he could to continue playing the game he loved, and at a high level. I think most of us here remember when he purchased a hyperbaric chamber for his home in order to combat the effects of those concussions. He continued to play the game at a high level until he couldn’t and played one season for the Dallas Cowboys before finally hanging up his cleats. 1734 tackles, 20.5 sacks, 17 INT’s, 16 FF’s, 8 FR’s, 4 defensive TD’s and 74 TFL’s. Just an amazing career, and although many doubted him due to the fact he was undersized at 5’11 230, he was a tremendous impact player and defensive playmaker. He could do it all, and along with his brother in law Jason Taylor, who played DE and OLB were an extremely talented defensive tandem and teammates that made watching Dolphins football from the late 90’s into the late 2000’s so much more enjoyable.

I got to meet Zach Thomas while on vacation at the Atlantis in the Bahamas. I was walking with my son to a vendor to get lunch and while walking, I see Zach sitting at a table with his wife and kids. Like a little kid, I got so excited, and embarrassedly said “Mr. Thomas?” He said ” Yeah man, how are you doing?” I replied that I was a huge Dolphins fan and would love to get a picture with him, but I see that you’re with your family and I don’t want to bother you. He immediately got up and said “No problem, I don’t mind at all”. Got the picture and I explained to him briefly how he was one of my favorites, and it was truly a thrill to meet him. The next day I’m at one of the pools at the Atlantis and Zach Thomas walks over and says hello. We have a conversation about him, the Miami Dolphins, Jimmy Johnson, Jack Del Rio, the aforementioned hyperbaric chamber for pretty close to an hour. I remember specifically during our discussion after telling him that JJ loved him right away and how he cut Jack Del Rio, Zach’s face as he knew he wasn’t talking to just a casual fan. When I brought up the hyperbaric chamber, Zach looked at me and said “Damn man, you’re really hardcore!”. I think all of us here are hardcore fans without question, and I’m sure I can say without any hesitation that Zach Thomas was one of the reasons we enjoyed watching this team. Dan Marino may be one of the first guys you think of when you think Miami Dolphins, but Zach Thomas is right there with him for me.

Thomas was all heart, passion and drive when he played football and that’s what I loved about him.

Thanks Boulder – No question, Zach was an overachiever, always exceeding expectations as a player. You have to have exceptional drive and desire to play at that level for so long. The Jets Joe Klecko was a similar player, undersized for sure, but heart put them over the top

  4. Awesome write Mike, and Zach is so deserving of the HOF.

Mike E, I’m very happy for you that you got to chat it up with Zach for about an hour! I remember when this happened, about 10 years ago, right? I also remember that picture of you with Zach… awesome!

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

      60. CB EMMANUEL FORBES, MISSISSIPPI STATE BULLDOGS
Forbes was unbelievably dominant in man coverage this season. The senior gave up only three catches in man while also snagging three interceptions. He also allowed only a 20% completion rate in man, the lowest among FBS cornerbacks.
      ————-
That he can play man-coverage in the SEC is most impressive! That makes him more than appropriate in Fangio’s ‘Match-Zone’ scheme, where we DO play man-coverage from time to time.

    178. Zion Nelson OT Miami (FL)
    240. Camren McDonald TE Florida State

  29. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

I think TE Camren McDonald could be a late round steal. I think he was underutilized at FSU. He has great hands, good route runner, good with the ball in his hands and a really good blocker. He is just not the size many covet at 6’4 240.

Tua Tagovailoa said he’s very thankful that the Miami Dolphins were “protecting me from myself.”

“For concussion protocol, I think the team did me the biggest service throughout that,” the Dolphins quarterback told USA TODAY Sports Friday at Super Bowl 57 Radio Row.

He cleared concussion protocol earlier this month. He said it “took forever.”

“(Miami) never allowed me to go through protocol normally until the season was done,” Tagovailoa said. “They were protecting me from myself. Me and my family are very thankful for the Dolphins.”

When asked if coach Mike McDaniels’ job was ever in jeopardy if the Dolphins missed the playoffs, Tagovailoa emphatically said, “There’s no way.”

Regarding retiring numbers, I get it and some in sports truly deserve it but I’m not totally in favor of it. For instance Tua would love to wear that 13 and he might not have suffered so many injuries if he was wearing it, who knows.
If they do retire 54 then 99 goes with it, I’d leave the numbers in play but memorialize them in the stadium such as they do with the ring of honor.

Piggy, I remember your mock when you selected RB Tank Bigsby. I hadn’t looked into him yet. I just thought you wanted us to draft him so you could buy his jersey and change the name to “Pigsby”. LOL

After taking a closer look, he is a good prospect. I still like RB Abanikanda from Pitt.

Bigsby doesn’t have top end speed (think he will be close to high 4.4 to low 4.5) but has very good vision and acceleration. His best trait is he has a sick natural ability to make defenders miss. He has really quick feet and acceleration to make people miss who only a split second before had him perfectly squared up to make a play only to be made to look silly.

What I like about him is of his 976 yards rushing last season, 740 yards came after first contact with 60 forced missed tackles (per PFF).

What I didn’t like was he had 6 fumbles in 3 seasons which amounts to about 1 fumble every 100 touches. He also runs a little upright. I think that helps his vision and jump cut ability.

He’s a tough one to make a call on where he goes. My guess would be 3rd round all the way to the 6th round. It’s a decent year to draft a RB also.

Not surprised. I did an exercise in Turkey back in the early 90’s then stayed behind for 3 more weeks to take care of the Marines doing the agricultural washdown of all the equipment and vehicles.

We stayed at a nearby hotel. On the way to the port where we were conducting the washdown you could see several apartment buildings being built. They used no rebar that I could see. The walls were cinderblock like and the floors were poured concrete maybe 6″ thick at the most. Seemed thinner from a distance.

I actually hooked up with the hotel owner’s daughter while I was there, her name is Arzu. Can’t remember her last name. Her father was Hungarian and mother from Turkey though she spoke with a British(ish) accent. She said her name meant “desire” which was very fitting. I asked her where a good restaurant was and she said, “I will take you.” She took me and my buddy and that was all she wrote.

Anyway, the earthquake made me think about her. We were on the North coast in Tekirdag so I don’t think they were affected.

I just had leftover spaghetti and a mini bag of Dorito’s. I am saving my Grandma’s Brownie Chocolate Chip Cookies for halftime. 🙂

  78. What song was that? I caught it midway through.

They just did Walter Payton man of the year, was wondering, if I could the Fins representative out, and there he stood all of 9′ tall Phillips

First SB I don’t know who to root for, guess I’ll figure it out, after the game starts

  81. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

This FN tourist town wants you to put up at least a hundy per person to go to any SB watch party and more on the Strip

The guy who sang our National Anthem while playing the guitar is no threat to Whitney Houston.

Her rendition, in my opinion, is the greatest of all time!!!

Mellow mushroom pepperoni pizza, already half gone, and a spinach salad.

opted for a cabernet sauvignon with that.

Caddyshack commercial played about 20 times yesterday on ESPN streaming, but not the full thing

  88. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

3rd and 4 offsides, should’ve been false start, RG was leaning back, think that’s why the Chief jumped

    BBM,

I got ribs, wings, baked beans, mac and cheese, and challah bread. I was exhausted before the game even started, lol.

  92. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Eagles have been dominant. That goofy fumble by Hurts is the only reason the chiefs are in it.

Henne gonna get some SB play time (?)

  94. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

    Cav, made BBM hungry again!

  95. Good thing the Chiefs deferred. They need a good TD drive to open the 2nd half. If they keep doing what they’re doing the Eagles are going to take this game over.

  96. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Time of possession is best D against Chiefs.

    Halftime choreography a tad goofy.

  99. randydolfan1947's avatar randydolfan1947 says:

NOT SOLD ON THE CONCEPT that deferring is the right thing to do IF you win the coin toss.

HAD THE Chiefs taken the ball on the opening drive AND SCORED, they would have had the early momentum.

THE DON OF MIAMI won the toss on all 3 playoff games in ’73. He promptly took the ball down the field AND SCORED A TOUCHDOWN IN ALL 3 GAMES!!

BY THE TIME THE SECOND HALF KICKOFF CAME AROUND, the Dolphins were already in full command of all 3 of these games.

I THINK deferring is chicken-shit. Show the other guys YOU’VE GOT THE BEST TEAM BY SCORING ON THE OPENING DRIVE!!!

Let them play catch-up the whole game!
