2023 Combine Done, Free Agency and Draft approach

The Dolphins will head into the 2023 NFL Draft short on picks, holding only a handful (5) of picks. We’re also over the cap at this very moment, but that will be remedied as we enter the free agency period and draft. Contracts will be restructured to open up cap room to acquire some new players and definitely to re-sign some of our players that were on the 2022 roster. In regards to the players that were here in ’22 that we should re-sign, I’ll list them in order of priority.

  1. LB Elandon Roberts
  2. CB Nik Needham
  3. RB Raheem Mostert
  4. OT Brandon Shell

OT Austin Jackson has not panned out, but he has one more season to prove he’s an NFL starting OT. Nothing he has done in his career leads me to believe that he should be penciled in at any position along our offensive line. He did play 17 games (started 16) at LG in 2021, but played in only 2 games last season. Despite playing an entire season in ’21, he was underwhelming at best. Injuries cut short his season last year, and although we have a 5th year option for Jackson, at this time I don’t see us using it. Brandon Shell, on the other hand, was a great backup who played in 13 games last season starting 11. His play, mostly at RT was impressive. I think we need to have a reliable option to backup either side, and right now, Shell would be choice over Austin Jackson. It’s also possible that talented OG Robert Hunt makes the move to RT, but I love his play inside, and it’s easier and less expensive to find a reliable OG than it is to find an offensive tackle.

As most of you know, I’m a huge fan of Nik Needham. Provided he’ll be ready to start the 2023 season, I’d re-sign the guy who always stepped up to play wherever and whenever he was asked. A true game, I want that guy on our team. Since we have ZERO running backs on our roster, Raheem Mostert in my opinion is one guy we want back. If we can get 2 guys back, I’d take Jeff Wilson too, but Mostert would be my first choice. That guy is electric, and just explodes through the hole or around the corner. Wilson is more of an inside runner than Mostert and he has some wiggle too, and seems more like a guy who can sustain a few more carries. That being said, neither player has had more than 200 carries in a season, so both players in my opinion are RB by committee guys, so I’d prefer to draft a RB, and wouldn’t mind if it were in the early rounds.

Back to CB, we have Xavien Howard, Kader Kohou, and Trill Williams. Seems clear as day that Byron Jones will not be playing for us and will be a post June 1st cut where he then either retires, or resumes his theatrics elsewhere. TE is another void for us with incumbent Durham Smythe the only reliable TE on the roster. TE Cethan Carter is still on the roster, as is Hunter Long and Tanner Conner. My feeling is we need to address TE either in free agency or the draft, and how we proceed with free agency will dictate what we do in the draft. Whatever doesn’t get filled in Free Agency will then become a priority for the draft. Teams generally don’t like to leave themselves in a position where they have to address any particular position in the draft, and remember, there is free agency that happens after the draft, and there are always players made available after teams fill their roster with freshly drafted players and let some veteran players go.

CB, TE, RB, OL seem to be our top priorities. Yes, I know many of you want more LB’s, specifically inside LB’s, but I’ve addressed this last article. Re-sign Elandon Roberts and we’re good to go. Our defense will be a better unit in the capable hands of Vic Fangio, we don’t need to spend a 2nd RD pick on a LB. Once again, not to be monotonous or redundant, but we can’t say for sure what our draft needs are until we fill the roster in free agency. Nevertheless, let’s look at some prospects at the aforementioned positions that could help us.

Since we don’t pick until #51 in the 2nd RD, these are the players that might be available when we pick

CB Deonte Banks 6’0 197 – Maryland

CB Kelee Ringo 6’2 207 – Georgia

CB Emmanuel Forbes 6’1 166 – Mississippi State

__________________________________________

TE Darnell Washington 6’7 264 – Georgia

TE Tucker Kraft 6’5 254 – South Dakota State

TE Luke Schoonmaker 6’5 251 – Michigan

__________________________________________

RB Jahmyr Gibbs 5’9 199 – Alabama

RB Israel Abanikanda 5’11 216 – Pittsburgh

RB Eric Gray – 5’9 1/2 207 – Oklahoma

I expect to hear a lot of I like this guy or that guy, or that guy won’t be available when we pick etc. All good in the hood, let it fly. These players are not set in stone, just an idea who might help our team and again, might be available when we choose. Obviously I did not pick the top prospects at any spot because they won’t be there, and some of the guys I chose may not end getting to 51 or beyond either. I didn’t watch a lot of the combine, and it was just one particular thing that impressed me. TE Darnell Washington, who is one of the taller TE’s, got down and moved the blocked sled like it was on wheels. Just one drill, but it shows he can bend, and he has the strength and technique to block effectively in the NFL. Most of the other guys who followed were not nearly as accomplished as Washington. Considering the fact that we need a willing (and effective) blocker for our TE, I’d love to snare Washington. He may not be the most accomplished receiver of the group, but if our TE can help our run game, I think his size alone will help him be an effective receiver.

Just in case you guys were unaware, RB Israel Abanikanda attended my High School in Brooklyn NY. Abraham Lincoln High School. Besides that, what a great name, maybe he can do commercials like our former MLB of the “No Name Defense” Nick Buoniconti did. “Hi, I’m Israel Abinakanda” “Who????” I think we’re going to need a CB early on, but that may change after free agency. I’d be happy with any of those 3 guys, but who knows, maybe this is the year where Iggy gets his career on track. He’s in his walk year, considering his 5th year option would be a lofty $11.5M, quite doubtful for sure. He’s a potential roster cut as is, but he’s be relatively cheap at just over $3M. Chris Grier and our scouts have a ton of work to do, our team is on the cusp of truly being a contender. A lot of that rests on the health of our QB1. Tua Tagovailoa. We absolutely need to have him for the entire season and the playoffs. Regardless, we need Grier to fill the rest of the roster, including finding a legitimate backup QB in case what we hope for doesn’t actually happen. Let’s hope Grier gets it right.

GO DOLPHINS!!!!

    Great post MikeE!

I agree, Washington is a monster when it comes to blocking. If we continue to not target the TE position in the pass game (as a 1st/2nd option) then he would be a great pickup.

RB, I have said several times Abanikanda is my target as he comes from Pitts zone system and is a great size/speed combo. Sean Tucker would be my fall back. Hell, draft them both. lol

Bottom line, we go by what the “experts” project them to go. We see many players move from those projections every year. Some even slide up or down 2-3 rounds.

Being we sent a Draft pick to the 49ers for Jeff Wilson, I’d expect us to re-sign him. And, as Mike E stated above, I think it would be my top priority (as it pertains to our RB room) to re-sign Raheem Mostert.

As for the Draft, my guys are RBs Roschon Johnson, Texas, and Devon Achane, Texas A&M.

Oh wow a guy from your own high school I’m definitely rooting for him that would be cool.
My daughter was a couple years ahead of Bortles at Oviedo so she went to school with him and my other daughter went to Hagerty with both Driskel brothers. Jeff went to Florida and had an NFL career although as a backup. The younger brother Jason never made it to the NFL but he did start for OD’s alma-mater under Lane Kiffen at FAU the Owls 🦉

Not many pro athletes from Stinkin Lincoln, but Lee Mazzilli of the Mets is probably one of the most well known. In my day, Lincoln was probably around 60% black and 40 % white, or maybe a little closer to 50/50. Coney Island was mostly black and Puerto Rican and all those people were bussed to Lincoln High School which was the closest one.

    Back to the TE position…

If TE Mike Gesicki, PSU, was in this ’23 Draft class, he’d probably be the 2nd TE off the board, after Michael Mayer.

Personally, I don’t see any TE in this class (aside from Mayer) even close to Gesicki’s ceiling. Now granted, I think we’ve all ascertained that Gesicki isn’t a fit for Coach McDaniel’s Offense (lack of blocking prowess).

In other words, I don’t see the next George Kittle (Coach McDaniel’s TE in SanFran) in this Draft class, at the top.

However, I like BB Mike’s train of thought that there may be some TE talent to be had in the mid-late rounds of this Draft. Yes, they may be developmental, but if they have positive traits, it’s worth the investment of a mid-late round selection.

JMO, but everybody else at the top of this TE class is a 1-trick pony (see Gesicki).

I have the feeling we’ll sign a vet TE via FA who is very unsung, to replace Gesicki. Just a feeling.

    • It’s like they want other teams to show them the market for him.

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

        Yep, they can always match.

Two 1sts isn’t great value for one of the top QBs, but maybe no teams are offering much more than two 1sts because of injury concerns. If that is the case, I can’t see any team giving him 250 mil guaranteed either.

      • People are talking about the concerns with Tua and saying they wouldn’t sign him to a 5th year option. Yet Jackson hasn’t been able to stay healthy for two seasons and a lot of talking heads say pay the man. He’s missed 5 games each of the last two seasons and a playoff game this past season. The Ravens are in a tough spot.

  16. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Recently, Grier was asked about running it back, specifically with Moster and Wilson.

“Yeah, that was the one we talked about the other day for just a little bit because obviously we traded for [Wilson] and obviously [Mostert] and [coach Mike McDaniel’s] relationship as well, too,” Grier said on March 1. “So yeah, we’re very open to those guys coming back. We’ve talked about that scenario where they may be back. We may have the same backfield back next year.

“Obviously they’re free agents and that’ll play a part of it, but we’d be very excited to have them back.”

I’d like to see us re-sign our backfield and a bunch of guys on defense. Make CB, TE, and OL priority in the draft. If we re-sign Mostert and Wilson, we can add a late RB if a guy we like is still there, but I’d rather we go one of those other positions with our early picks.

If we can do that and add a couple of upgrades or even just depth to the roster in FA, that sounds good to me.

Not many. Just Robinson and Gibbs. WR and LB positions are not strong this draft. I think the top 2 RB’s could slide up.

I got into politics at a relatively young age (22 years old, during the Clinton administration) due to the fact that I had a MAJOR problem with the media by and large for their provable lies: global, national, and even local (<- my music).

Ben Shapiro is a protege of my guy Glenn Beck and I appreciate Ben (even when I disagree with him, which is surprisingly more often than I'd like). He's very intelligent and incredibly well-informed. Sidenote: he looks much more mature with facial hair than not with his 'baby face'. This was a great and informative video.

It was WOODROW WILSON (fuck him, even if he wasn't mentioned by name!) who set the standard for BS journalism back in the late 1910s: there isn't a single thing under the sun that that Fabian-Socialist didn't screw up for America, setting the table FDR's presidency later on.

    Mike Gesicki: $8.2M/yr
    Hayden Hurst: $6.8M/yr
    Austin Hooper: $6.7M/yr
    Robert Tonyan Jr: $5.0M/yr
    Jordan Akins: $2.6M/yr

Whoever is the best blocking TE gets the job, IMO. Hayden Hurst would be nice.

  48. M13, McDaniel recently said he expects the running game to catch up with the passing game. Reading between the lines I think that has to do with some personnel changes, not just a year under their belts. Gesicki doesn’t fit that especially at the price he’ll be looking for.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

    • Because of our current roster we know we will have to add LB and RB in FA and in the draft because of the numbers game. Definitely try to upgrade the OL. TE makes sense and I think we need to add another CB. So your draft pretty much covers that.

With our cap situation I think FA is going to be interesting. I’d like to see us fill some voids in FA so we can draft the BPA with each pick. When you still have voids heading into the draft you tend to reach for positions. With our draft 2, 3, 3, 6, 7 take the best prospects on your board as they fall to you regardless of position. You can always load up with UDFAs to address voids and add competition to those positions.

Second, If they signed him to the exclusive tag, he doesn’t get to negotiate with other teams. I’m betting because the two sides are so far apart, the Ravens are saying, go out there and see what the market is. If it’s what you think it is, we’ll talk about that.

I don’t think any team is going to offer him 200+ mil guaranteed, and I think the guaranteed money is the hold up.

I see people talking about how the Ravens will only get two 1sts. I think the non-exclusive means they intend to keep him.

From Barry Jackson’s article: “Roby, Bradberry, Sutton and Dean would all help the Dolphins’ cornerback room, among others on that list.”

    Market values, per Spotrac
    Roby: ???
    Bradberry: $15.1M/yr
    Sutton: $7.6M/yr
    Dean: $16.5M/yr

I say screw it, if we’re going for a vet CB, let it be Patrick Peterson. He’s NOT a shadow of his former self, though he’s going to be 33 years old by the beginning of the season. He’s coming off a decent season and Spotrac has his market value at $6.4M/yr.

Last season, Peterson had 5 INTs (2nd most of his career), 91 INTs yards (most of his career), 15 PDs (2nd most of his career), 66 tackles (most in his career), 3 TFL (tied for most in his career), and his advanced stats (which only go back to 2018 at Pro Football Reference) are among the best in his career.

So here is my FA wishlist once FA opens in just over a week…

    — The usual suspects from our ’22 season (ie: Elandon Roberts, Nik Needham, etc)

    — QB Case Keenum (knows our Offense, being he was drafted into it under Gary Kubiak, a consummate Shanahan disciple, will come relatively cheap)

    — TE Hayden Hurst (blocking TE who can catch)

    — CB Patrick Peterson (he’s still got it, after all these years)

    — ILB/MLB Tremaine Edmunds (for obvious reasons, though probably a pipedream at this point due to money. Bobby Wagner or Eric Kendricks would be welcome, too)

Interesting that the guaranteed money for these deals are all coming in around 100 mil.

Kong, I hope Cleveland gets crushed for their stupidity and guaranteeing all $250 million to handjob sexual predator

  83. Geno Smith got 3 years $105M for having a breakout season in his 10th season. He’ll be 33 in October. What we’re seeing is teams know if you have at least a competent QB that gives you a chance to compete, you have to pay them. Because if you don’t have a QB your season is shot. Teams that are looking at 2 or 3 QBs in their lineup every year don’t have good seasons.

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

35 mil puts Geno just outside the top 10 and probably middle of the pack when this offseason plays out. That sounds about right for what he did. The Giants are giving Jones 5-13 million more per year (based on incentives).

Not sure that is a good deal for them. I’m not sure anyone thinks Jones is a top 10 QB last year or in the near future (or a top 3 QB if he hits his incentives). But if the guaranteed money is similar- in the 100 mil range, it probably doesn’t matter. It’s a QB players market right now and these guys are cashing in.

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Those incentives are a big deal. If they are based on how far the Giants go in the playoffs, that makes more sense, but if they are numbers based, they could literally be paying him as the #3 QB in the league…

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

I’m really curious to see the guaranteed money for Jones. Like I said, if it’s in the 100 mil range, then the extra ‘per year’ doesn’t mean as much since the Giants still have basically the same out $$$-wise as the Seahawks and Saints do with their QBs who got less per year.

      • The team is betting on him to keep progressing. They wouldn’t have paid him if they didn’t believe in him. We’ll find out if it was right or wrong in a couple of years. But like you said, QBs are getting paid.

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

True that. And as you mentioned, QBS that get wins are valued commodities, even if they aren’t top 5, you still have to keep them since there are only 5 top 5 guys and not everyone can have one, lol.

      • Yeah like our own situation this past season. Outside of Tua our backups won one game, 11-6 last game of the year against the Jets and a game ending safety. It was all FGs. LOL

If our QBs were Bridgewater and Thompson all year what do you think our record would have been? I’d say probably 4-13.

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

        shudder

I don’t want to even think about how bad we’d have been with Teddy and Skyler as 1 and 2 all year, lol.

  84. When it comes to Tua, the concussions are the issue and everyone knows that. That’s really the only thing he needs to improve on based on what we saw last year. Protect yourself, don’t put your body in awkward positions trying to make a play that isn’t there. Throw it away, run and slide feet first – not diving head first, or just go down and take the sack. 3rd and 15 is better than having to leave the game and missing more games.

These rumor guys kill me. Wasn’t Atlanta supposed to be one of the really big players in the Lamar Jackson hunt, and now it’s being put out there they aren’t interested…along with the Dolphins, Raiders, Panthers, and Commanders.

LOL, basically most of the teams that still need a QB, along with us (we obviously aren’t looking for a new starter as we on this board all knew). Things could go 180, but right now the Ravens are looking smart IMO

    • Teams might know what Lamar Jackson is looking for and they’re all like geez! Uhmmm… yeah… no…

Could Houston be the dark horse? They have picks and cap. New HC in DeMeco Ryans who might be part of a plan to get the QB and he’ll coach up the defense.

  88. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Seems like a new league story is that the NFL is colluding not to pay Lamar Jackson what deshawn Watsson received…

I don’t know about the “collusion” aspect
And I question it bc we are one of the teams being used as evidence even though I think the organization has been clear about wanting Tua as their QB

    But aside from that
I never really took a long look at Watsons numbers until now

Wow ! I almost don’t blame the league for preventing that if they are in fact preventing it

So to reiterate – I think it’s far fetched
    But I think it’s justifiable if true…lol

Look at Watsons numbers and how it affects the cap
    😲

  91. Randy's avatar Randy says:

Jackson is already showing that he’s wearing down. That means he’s probably going to start running less. That makes him an average QB in today’s NFL. He’s only had one really good passing year. Why would I want to sign him to a huge/long term contract? I bet Baltimore would love for someone to want him so they can get the picks. And, if he truly is that great, teams should be jumping at the chance to sign him, shouldn’t they? Even 2 1st round picks is nothing for a high end franchise QB. Baltimore has always been one of the smartest personnel teams in the league. I think they know what they’re doing.

I forgot / didn’t realize that Ogbah lead the league in disrupting QB drop backs in the first two years playing with us (18 sacks and 45 QB hits!) Even without the new scheme we should NOT have to blitz to get to the QB.

It was a disappointing season for him only playing 9 games (and Injured) Here is to a fully healthy year for Ogbah, Chubb and Phillips!
