Dolphins commit to Tua – Pick up 5th year

This was music to my ears, music I desperately wanted to hear. This fan is simply disgusted by all the negativity, the naysayers, know-it-all-neurosurgeon-fanboys from other teams, and really all the talking heads who were in lockstep with the fanboys. The Miami Dolphins basically just said STFU!!! Tua is our QB, in 2023, and at least through 2024 as well. Unless the Dolphins had information that Tua’s next big hit would be his last, and the man would need to retire, then this was the right thing to do. Tua is a winner, and if we had him the whole season, we could have been the #2 or #3 seed in the AFC. We might have had a BYE in the playoffs or played at home, with Tua starting. It didn’t happen, and it appears the Dolphins were very cautious with their young QB and perhaps a tad overprotective, but that was a move made for the future.

There is so much hate for this kid, yes, especially from our own Dolphins fanbase. For those people, Tua is too much of a risk, or to the extremists, not talented enough to win. To those imbeciles, I present Exhibit A. Tua’s record as the QB of the Miami Dolphins, 21-13. You’d have to go back as far as Chad Pennington in 2008 to find a more favorable W/L record. Unfortunately, Chad Pennington, 11-5 only made it one season before retiring. Knucklehead Dolphins fans will say “Tua had the best WR’s in the NFL, that’s why!”. OK, so he was 8-5 this season with Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle. What about 2021, when it was Jaylen Waddle, a hobbled DeVante Parker for 10 games, Mack Hollins, Isaiah Ford, with the backfield of Myles Gaskin, Salvon Ahmed, Phillip Lindsay for 4 games, and Malcolm Brown. In 2020, it was a hobbled DeVante Parker for 14 games, Mack Hollins, Lynn Bowden Jr., Jakeem Grant etc. 21-13, not earthshaking, but it’s good for a .617 winning %, better than all but Chad Pennington, who did it for one season 14 years ago. Yet, some Dolphins fans will still sling arrows at Tua. Ridiculous!

Let’s take a different angle. Tua is a team player, a genuinely nice kid. He works as hard as anyone on the team, his HC Mike McDaniel loves him. Yes, we know that former Head Coach Brian Flores did not like Tua, but where the F is Brian Flores now, he with his nonsensical lawsuit against the NFL? Is he a Head Coach now? No! What Head Coach sabotages his own team because he doesn’t like the starting QB? Brian Flores. Flores pulled Tua out of games he struggled in, and that kind of tact shows a lack of confidence in a player, and in turn, stunts his development. Players need to play through adversity, but Flores didn’t allow Tua to grow. Despite Brian Flores, Tua grew anyway, and now with the confidence of his new HC, and the 3rd different offensive system, he flourished. 2023 will be the first time in Tua’s career that he will have the same offensive system in place to build upon.

People will mock Tua because of his injury history. People will laugh that he’s taking Jiu-Jitsu to learn how to protect his body when he’s hit and falls. Some people think that’s comical, that he’s a 25 year old man that should know to fall. How people can hate a person that is doing everything he can to be better at his craft, one that will work relentlessly to do so is beyond me. Personally, I feel bad for his detractors, I think they’re a sad bunch. Not since Dan Marino have we had a successful QB for more than one season. Tua was NUMBER ONE in QB passer rating last season (105.5). The QBR is the most comprehensive metric for a QB and Tua was the best! Better than Mahomes, Burrow, Herbert, Allen, ALL OF THEM! NUMBER ONE in yards per attempt (8.7). NUMBER ONE in yards per completion (13.1). There are 3 other categories that Tua was tops in, yet people still hate. It’s a ridiculous phenomenon that I believe only social media could breed.

I look forward to a great 2023 season with our Miami Dolphins. We’ve cleared lots of cap space, to the tune of $28M +, and will get an additional boost when we cut Byron Jones June 1st, to put us over $40M. We have a lot of guys I’d like to re-sign, this will enable that to happen. Elandon Roberts, Nik Needham, Raheem Mostert, Jeff Wilson, Brandon Shell and possibly even AVG, although I think he’s going to be playing elsewhere. There will likely be a surprise signing as well, but hopefully we’ll fill our roster out well in free agency and then the draft, and then again in free agency after the draft. Our team is close, on the cusp of being a legit playoff contender and more.

GO DOLPHINS!!!!

I do like RB Chase Brown, 5’9.5 209 from Illinois as a late round pick. He ran a 4.43 at the combine so he has some quicks to him and some decent receiving skills. He may not last until the 6th round when we pick but some sites don’t have him in their top 200 so he could be there.

    • Wyoming85's avatar Wyoming85 says:

David Long tackled opposing ball carriers for a loss or no gain on 6.6% of his run defense snaps last season, the 2nd-highest run stuff rate in the NFL (min. 200 run snaps).

Long also was effective in coverage, allowing -5.1 receptions over expected (6th among LB).

      • There are players like this in the league that aren’t household names but they’re very good. I’m thinking about Fangio’s defense with these moves we’ve made. Good tacklers and guys who can cover. That includes Ramsey.

  10. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

  11. Baker, Long, Riley and Tindall is the key to rounding this out. I think Goode is going to compete more as an edge OLB. Remember there will only be 2 or 1 off-ball LBs on the field much of the time in nickel and dime.

  12. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Looks like Long hits like Roberts, but isn’t a liability in coverage

PFF’s rankings for free agent linebackers:

    3. LB DAVID LONG
Contract projection: Available in PFF’s free agency rankings

The Titans ask a lot of their off-ball linebackers, and Long can do it all. His 89.0 run-defense grade in 2022 ranked fourth at the position, with his 13 tackles for loss or no gain tied for 12th. Long plays a downhill, attacking brand of football that helps him blow up a lot of plays but also makes him particularly susceptible to over-committing on play-action passes and missing tackles when he takes a poor pursuit angle. Nevertheless, he is clearly an ascending young player contributing immensely to Tennessee’s defense that finished first in expected points added per rush allowed on the season.

The 2022 season was Long’s first as a full-time starter at middle linebacker, but he’s made the most of opportunities in the past. Over the past three seasons, his 19.8% pass-rush win rate and 23.8% pressure rate are both the second-best marks among off-ball linebackers with at least 100 pass-rush snaps over the span.

    Edmunds to Da Bears

  16. If we’re going to play more shell coverages than we’ve seen in the past, you need instinctive players and good tacklers. That seems to be the way we’re going.

  17. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

We now have 3 Jalens and they are all studs.

  18. Okay so off-ball LB seems to be wrapping up. The addition of Ramsey is huge in the secondary. Backup QB in Mike White. We need more RB and TE. OL competition is always good.

  19. Vic Fangio said he spent the off-season looking at trends in the game. It’s about defending the pass. Of course you have to play the run and we have guys who can do that. But matchups in the passing game are huge. It seems obvious to me.

  20. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Long is a run stuffer. His lowest grade is in coverage.

    • Defending the pass is not just about coverage from a specific player. It’s about how to get offenses off the field because they didn’t convert. It’s a group dynamic. Long Jr. is an energy guy who loves football and has been coached up as a former 6th rd pick under Mike Vrabel. He’s a flash guy in all phases.

  21. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

    • Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

I read that a little earlier. That’s a good deal for us.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

That’s a great deal, we just need Tua to play all 34 games

    • I figured that was the case.

My view on Mike F’ing White is he plays with a cool demeanor, he doesn’t play in a panic mode. That’s how Wilson and Skylar play. When I watched White play he looks the part in control of an offense. He’s just not a physically gifted athlete in the modern era. He won’t carry a team, but he won’t fuck it up all the time. LOL

  22. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Spotrac estimates Long’s market value to be a deal that pays him $4.9 million per season. That seems a bit low but definitely possible given the aforementioned injury concerns.

  23. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

This signing may go under the radar

But this is a good signing

    • I think what we’ll see on defense under Fangio is always be ready for the run and do your job, but in coverage we’re going to mix it up both schematically and with personnel. Long Jr. looks like a fit for that.

It seems like Baker, Long Jr., Riley and Tindall will be the off-ball LBs who can do some different things at times. We’re going to be playing 5 and 6 DBs much of the time especially with Ramsey. That guy plays all over the field kind of like a Rover.

  24. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I thought this was a done deal

But I guess there is still room for the jests to ruin anything

  25. Our 4-2-5 common defense.
    Chubb, Phillips, Wilkins and Ogbah
    Baker and Long Jr.
X, Ramsey, Kohou, Holland and Jones

  26. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Thinking about our defense and getting ready for bed

  27. Every defense needs to match up with 11 personnel on offense. That’s today’s game.

Jalen Ramsey was a big time addition because he’s one of the best defenders in the game. But the addition of Vic Fangio as DC is just as big. There’s too much talent on defense to fail. 😉

  28. Good stuff and he’s a special player. He makes us a better team.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Minn is 10m over the cap, they need to clear some space before the new league year starts tomorrow, Cook counts 14m against their cap

Ramsey was due to make $17 million in 2023, $18.5 million in 2024, and $19.5 million in 2025.

Here are the new terms, per a source with knowledge of the deal.

    1. Signing bonus: $8.835 million.

    2. 2023 base salary: $1.165 million, fully guaranteed.

    3. 2024 offseason roster bonus: $11 million, fully guaranteed.

    4. 2024 base salary: $14.5 million, fully guaranteed.

    5. 2025 offseason roster bonus: $4 million.

    6. 2025 base salary: $15.5 million.

The contract continues to include $2.5 million escalators for 2024 and 2025.

Before the trade, Ramsey had $5 million in full guarantees remaining. After the trade, he now has $35.5 million in full guarantees.

Also, the Dolphins got some significant cap relief for 2023. Instead of having Ramsey could for $17 million, his new cap number is $4.11 million. That’s a reduction of $12.89 million.

To make it happen, Ramsey gave up $7 million in cash this year. But he’ll get it all back in 2024. His 2025 terms are unchanged.

Still don’t want to give up another draft pick and pay more for a RB who is not all that much better than Damien Harris.

He will cost 6.2 mil and is a F/A in 2024. We already did that with Wilson in giving up a draft pick for a 1 year rental. Wilson’s case was less than a 1 year rental.
