This was music to my ears, music I desperately wanted to hear. This fan is simply disgusted by all the negativity, the naysayers, know-it-all-neurosurgeon-fanboys from other teams, and really all the talking heads who were in lockstep with the fanboys. The Miami Dolphins basically just said STFU!!! Tua is our QB, in 2023, and at least through 2024 as well. Unless the Dolphins had information that Tua’s next big hit would be his last, and the man would need to retire, then this was the right thing to do. Tua is a winner, and if we had him the whole season, we could have been the #2 or #3 seed in the AFC. We might have had a BYE in the playoffs or played at home, with Tua starting. It didn’t happen, and it appears the Dolphins were very cautious with their young QB and perhaps a tad overprotective, but that was a move made for the future.
There is so much hate for this kid, yes, especially from our own Dolphins fanbase. For those people, Tua is too much of a risk, or to the extremists, not talented enough to win. To those imbeciles, I present Exhibit A. Tua’s record as the QB of the Miami Dolphins, 21-13. You’d have to go back as far as Chad Pennington in 2008 to find a more favorable W/L record. Unfortunately, Chad Pennington, 11-5 only made it one season before retiring. Knucklehead Dolphins fans will say “Tua had the best WR’s in the NFL, that’s why!”. OK, so he was 8-5 this season with Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle. What about 2021, when it was Jaylen Waddle, a hobbled DeVante Parker for 10 games, Mack Hollins, Isaiah Ford, with the backfield of Myles Gaskin, Salvon Ahmed, Phillip Lindsay for 4 games, and Malcolm Brown. In 2020, it was a hobbled DeVante Parker for 14 games, Mack Hollins, Lynn Bowden Jr., Jakeem Grant etc. 21-13, not earthshaking, but it’s good for a .617 winning %, better than all but Chad Pennington, who did it for one season 14 years ago. Yet, some Dolphins fans will still sling arrows at Tua. Ridiculous!
Let’s take a different angle. Tua is a team player, a genuinely nice kid. He works as hard as anyone on the team, his HC Mike McDaniel loves him. Yes, we know that former Head Coach Brian Flores did not like Tua, but where the F is Brian Flores now, he with his nonsensical lawsuit against the NFL? Is he a Head Coach now? No! What Head Coach sabotages his own team because he doesn’t like the starting QB? Brian Flores. Flores pulled Tua out of games he struggled in, and that kind of tact shows a lack of confidence in a player, and in turn, stunts his development. Players need to play through adversity, but Flores didn’t allow Tua to grow. Despite Brian Flores, Tua grew anyway, and now with the confidence of his new HC, and the 3rd different offensive system, he flourished. 2023 will be the first time in Tua’s career that he will have the same offensive system in place to build upon.
People will mock Tua because of his injury history. People will laugh that he’s taking Jiu-Jitsu to learn how to protect his body when he’s hit and falls. Some people think that’s comical, that he’s a 25 year old man that should know to fall. How people can hate a person that is doing everything he can to be better at his craft, one that will work relentlessly to do so is beyond me. Personally, I feel bad for his detractors, I think they’re a sad bunch. Not since Dan Marino have we had a successful QB for more than one season. Tua was NUMBER ONE in QB passer rating last season (105.5). The QBR is the most comprehensive metric for a QB and Tua was the best! Better than Mahomes, Burrow, Herbert, Allen, ALL OF THEM! NUMBER ONE in yards per attempt (8.7). NUMBER ONE in yards per completion (13.1). There are 3 other categories that Tua was tops in, yet people still hate. It’s a ridiculous phenomenon that I believe only social media could breed.
I look forward to a great 2023 season with our Miami Dolphins. We’ve cleared lots of cap space, to the tune of $28M +, and will get an additional boost when we cut Byron Jones June 1st, to put us over $40M. We have a lot of guys I’d like to re-sign, this will enable that to happen. Elandon Roberts, Nik Needham, Raheem Mostert, Jeff Wilson, Brandon Shell and possibly even AVG, although I think he’s going to be playing elsewhere. There will likely be a surprise signing as well, but hopefully we’ll fill our roster out well in free agency and then the draft, and then again in free agency after the draft. Our team is close, on the cusp of being a legit playoff contender and more.

There are still our draft picks and then 20 plus free agents for the 90 man summer squad of which I will bet some will push out guys “on the team” today, but there won’t be that much difference. 5-6 guys maybe? Yep, even guys that get pushed out the bottom are likely getting pushed out by mid to lower depth guys anyway. Guys like Sherfield and Craycray aren’t getting big contracts (assuming we bring them back). So if Cray gets 1.2 mil and pushes out a guy making 750k, we’re talking 500k hit.
We should be in good shape. With the money we get for Jones in June, we should be looking pretty good…at least this year, lol.

Talking about the current roster being filled out, I was more looking at our cap. We’ve got our current top 51 well under the cap, so we’re not struggling to make it work and aren’t hamstrung in any way from moving through the rest of the offseason. And we can still make moves if we want to.
Which guys make the 53 is another issue. Like rock said, we’ve still got 30 something slots to fill. We’ve still got draft picks coming in, all 3 or 4 of them, lol, no doubt we’ll have a guy making the minimum who impresses and makes it onto the 53, and we still might sign some guys that are locks to get in.

On a need basis, the two areas of need right now to me are TE and OL. We need a pass catching TE and more competition and depth on the OL.
But when it comes to the OL lets not forget that playing the outside zone blocking schemes we use does not happen overnight. Mike Shanahan said it used to take him two years to get it to where he wanted it to be. The right personnel and the techniques. I’ll defer to the coaches on who they believe in because our view as fans is not the same way they see it.

Yep! They still need to add more talent and coach it up. Mike McDaniel and his staff are a year into this thing and Fangio is a seasoned vet. Landing him was as good as it could have been.
The addition of Ramsey is continuing to resonate with me. This dude is a badass defender. Along with X and Holland it’s not going to be easy for opponents. First you have to block the front. That won’t be easy either. The LB position has been validated with Long and Riley. Baker is our 3 down LB. Tindall making the jump could be huge. These are all read and chase type backers – who can blitz at times. Tackling is paramount. Fangio is a stickler for that from what I’ve read. Guys that don’t tackle don’t play.
The safety we just picked up fits the strong tackler mold as well.

For me blocking at TE is more important. We can still have 3 WR lead by Hill and Waddle, with whomever is 3rd and a RB. All our backs can catch the ball. That’s a form of max protect to get the ball to your best playmakers.
11 personnel is the staple offense in the NFL. The 4-2-5 however you want to rearrange it on defense is the counter.
Fangio is old school, so he wants good tackling. But, what he does on defense is play a system that just doesn’t put guys in bad positions. It’s nothing really complex. His 2 high shell look is just designed to keep everything in front of you so guys can see the play happening and make the play.

We’ve been talking for a couple decades about how bad the tackling is in the NFL these days. They don’t practice it, and guys just don’t want to do it. Plus, they’re all taught to strip the ball these days. The key is getting multiple guys to the ball. Don’t rely on one player making the tackle.

TE Davis Allen is slower than Adam Shaheen. 4.84 to AS 4.79 and is an inch shorter and 30 pounds lighter. He is slow.
But Allen’s at least 30 IQ points smarter than Shaheen.
Also those 40 times are 5 hundredths apart which is undetectable.
Also Allen was a star for one of the top programs in the country
while Shaheen played college ball at a D2 school that plays nobody.

Kraft is to much of a hit or miss for me. I think it would be Sam Laporta or Luke Schoonmaker for me after DW.
Davis Allen would give us what Gesicki did in the red zone. Blocking is the only knock for me. However, he still has to be better than Gesicki when it comes to blocking. I would find it hard for him to start at Clemson if he didn’t have some skills there.

I am still all in on OL at #51.
I haven’t done the actual math, but it seems we resigned ALL 4 of our RBs for the price it would have cost for ONE top tier FA. With improved OL play our RBs can do damage AND we have depth.
Only thing I can say about Saubert is that he at least has found a way to stick around in the NFL … so there is Something there that keeps getting him another job. But I’m not banking on him to be “that guy” at TE … feels more like a depth signing, or a “just in case we miss out on other FAs or in the draft” signing.
We need to carry 4 TEs and have at least 2 be good on STs,
so Smythe, Connor, Saubert are really good depth with good hands.

The Dolphins would listen to any offers on Cedrick Wilson, per Barry Jackson. A couple days ago NFL Network reported that he was valued in Dallas and that they might have interest in bringing him back. Definitely something to keep an eye on.
Looks like we can save 6m off of the cap, if he’s traded. He carries 7m in dead money, but that should be for guaranteed salary this year
I’d give Dallas a 7th, to take his contract
