Dolphins commit to Tua – Pick up 5th year

This was music to my ears, music I desperately wanted to hear. This fan is simply disgusted by all the negativity, the naysayers, know-it-all-neurosurgeon-fanboys from other teams, and really all the talking heads who were in lockstep with the fanboys. The Miami Dolphins basically just said STFU!!! Tua is our QB, in 2023, and at least through 2024 as well. Unless the Dolphins had information that Tua’s next big hit would be his last, and the man would need to retire, then this was the right thing to do. Tua is a winner, and if we had him the whole season, we could have been the #2 or #3 seed in the AFC. We might have had a BYE in the playoffs or played at home, with Tua starting. It didn’t happen, and it appears the Dolphins were very cautious with their young QB and perhaps a tad overprotective, but that was a move made for the future.

There is so much hate for this kid, yes, especially from our own Dolphins fanbase. For those people, Tua is too much of a risk, or to the extremists, not talented enough to win. To those imbeciles, I present Exhibit A. Tua’s record as the QB of the Miami Dolphins, 21-13. You’d have to go back as far as Chad Pennington in 2008 to find a more favorable W/L record. Unfortunately, Chad Pennington, 11-5 only made it one season before retiring. Knucklehead Dolphins fans will say “Tua had the best WR’s in the NFL, that’s why!”. OK, so he was 8-5 this season with Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle. What about 2021, when it was Jaylen Waddle, a hobbled DeVante Parker for 10 games, Mack Hollins, Isaiah Ford, with the backfield of Myles Gaskin, Salvon Ahmed, Phillip Lindsay for 4 games, and Malcolm Brown. In 2020, it was a hobbled DeVante Parker for 14 games, Mack Hollins, Lynn Bowden Jr., Jakeem Grant etc. 21-13, not earthshaking, but it’s good for a .617 winning %, better than all but Chad Pennington, who did it for one season 14 years ago. Yet, some Dolphins fans will still sling arrows at Tua. Ridiculous!

Let’s take a different angle. Tua is a team player, a genuinely nice kid. He works as hard as anyone on the team, his HC Mike McDaniel loves him. Yes, we know that former Head Coach Brian Flores did not like Tua, but where the F is Brian Flores now, he with his nonsensical lawsuit against the NFL? Is he a Head Coach now? No! What Head Coach sabotages his own team because he doesn’t like the starting QB? Brian Flores. Flores pulled Tua out of games he struggled in, and that kind of tact shows a lack of confidence in a player, and in turn, stunts his development. Players need to play through adversity, but Flores didn’t allow Tua to grow. Despite Brian Flores, Tua grew anyway, and now with the confidence of his new HC, and the 3rd different offensive system, he flourished. 2023 will be the first time in Tua’s career that he will have the same offensive system in place to build upon.

People will mock Tua because of his injury history. People will laugh that he’s taking Jiu-Jitsu to learn how to protect his body when he’s hit and falls. Some people think that’s comical, that he’s a 25 year old man that should know to fall. How people can hate a person that is doing everything he can to be better at his craft, one that will work relentlessly to do so is beyond me. Personally, I feel bad for his detractors, I think they’re a sad bunch. Not since Dan Marino have we had a successful QB for more than one season. Tua was NUMBER ONE in QB passer rating last season (105.5). The QBR is the most comprehensive metric for a QB and Tua was the best! Better than Mahomes, Burrow, Herbert, Allen, ALL OF THEM! NUMBER ONE in yards per attempt (8.7). NUMBER ONE in yards per completion (13.1). There are 3 other categories that Tua was tops in, yet people still hate. It’s a ridiculous phenomenon that I believe only social media could breed.

I look forward to a great 2023 season with our Miami Dolphins. We’ve cleared lots of cap space, to the tune of $28M +, and will get an additional boost when we cut Byron Jones June 1st, to put us over $40M. We have a lot of guys I’d like to re-sign, this will enable that to happen. Elandon Roberts, Nik Needham, Raheem Mostert, Jeff Wilson, Brandon Shell and possibly even AVG, although I think he’s going to be playing elsewhere. There will likely be a surprise signing as well, but hopefully we’ll fill our roster out well in free agency and then the draft, and then again in free agency after the draft. Our team is close, on the cusp of being a legit playoff contender and more.

GO DOLPHINS!!!!

  1. Rockphin says:

I don’t remember him playing for us, but we have re-signed O-line Kendall Lamm

He must have been a depth guy? I cannot remember ever hearing his name.

  2. Rockphin says:

    BAM! Page Turn

  3. CavalierKong says:

I had to type in Kendall Lamm’s name to get his re-signing news. Type in Miami Dolphins news and his transaction doesn’t come up, lol.

  4. CavalierKong says:

Still need a punter, so that’ll push us to 50.

  8. Ken says:

Yeah Myles Gaskin is back. I always liked him

  9. Rockphin says:

that puts us at 53 right?

    Only 37 left to go!

  11. mf13ss says:

    I can’t believe we haven’t re-signed Elandon Roberts.

  12. Ken says:

There is our in line TE

  13. CavalierKong says:

Sweet. Filled out roster, now the cap isn’t an issue for the rest of our signings, except for players that crack the top 51.

Glad to see Gaskin back with us. I don’t know the TE, but I like seeing some of these guys are also ST contributors.

Still would like to see sherfield and/or Cray cray back.

  14. CavalierKong says:

So is Saubert a Smythe type TE?

  15. CavalierKong says:

  16. naplesfan2010 says:

We resigned Kendall Lamm OT who had 1 good game for us last year and then got hurt.

  17. naplesfan2010 says:

very happy to have Myles Gaskin back

  18. naplesfan2010 says:

I would love to have Morstead back.
    AND Sherfield and Cracraft

    • naplesfan2010 says:

but Swain might’ve taken somebody’s spot, although he failed to crack the roster last time he was here, so maybe he’s camp legs that they’ll keep as an emergency guy off the PS who knows our system well enough to step in.

  19. Rockphin says:

Yeah, today marks the core of the team. There are still our draft picks and then 20 plus free agents for the 90 man summer squad of which I will bet some will push out guys “on the team” today, but there won’t be that much difference. 5-6 guys maybe? (not counting the practice squad, where we will stash more)

    • CavalierKong says:

Yep, even guys that get pushed out the bottom are likely getting pushed out by mid to lower depth guys anyway. Guys like Sherfield and Craycray aren’t getting big contracts (assuming we bring them back). So if Cray gets 1.2 mil and pushes out a guy making 750k, we’re talking 500k hit.

We should be in good shape. With the money we get for Jones in June, we should be looking pretty good…at least this year, lol.

  20. CavalierKong says:

Maybe this is what is holding up the Rodgers trade to the Jest…fear.

  21. Rockphin says:

I wonder how that works, contractually. We have to bring 90 guys in. Ostensibly everybody who comes to camp has a contract to play for the team (thus the top 51 rule) What happens to the contracts to the guys who don’t make it?

  22. mf13ss says:

    • Rockphin says:

      Deshaun Watson’s Cap numbers next year, ’25 % ’26 – 63.9M per season

“only 19M” this season, but still

  23. No guarantee that some of these guys we’re bringing in make the 53. I see us signing a bunch of UDFAs and then guys who get released to compete.

    • CavalierKong says:

      True that, good point.

Talking about the current roster being filled out, I was more looking at our cap. We’ve got our current top 51 well under the cap, so we’re not struggling to make it work and aren’t hamstrung in any way from moving through the rest of the offseason. And we can still make moves if we want to.

Which guys make the 53 is another issue. Like rock said, we’ve still got 30 something slots to fill. We’ve still got draft picks coming in, all 3 or 4 of them, lol, no doubt we’ll have a guy making the minimum who impresses and makes it onto the 53, and we still might sign some guys that are locks to get in.

  24. stangerx says:

Ezekiel Elliott is 27. Just cut and looking for a new team. And the Boys took a huge cap hit. Life expectancy at RB is not great.

I got stuck working nights on this Shutdown!

So I’m up and atum 5:oo pm to 5:oo AM for the next month or so

  26. Rockphin says:

Sorry to hear you got the shit shift Wyoming. That sucks. Do you get off hour compensation?

  27. manitobafinfan says:

    So 1+1 = 76

Eagles put out wanting players to be able to wear # 0… Darnell Washington was # 0 at Georgia… Thus with my advanced math skills. Eagles will be targeting Washington in the draft

  28. Wyoming85 says:

  29. Rockphin says:

I was hoping the guy from BC that we just traded away would be our next “great” dual threat true TE. He was a good blocker and led the college ranks in receiving at one time unless this fine white haired fuzzy bud is confusing me.

  30. The FA TE market might be slow because there are a lot of TEs in this draft so teams may look for cheaper options.

  31. Wyoming85 says:

Tackles well, Hard Hitter, I see a theme

  32. Wyoming85 says:

Man there is a lot of Gaskin hate in the Twitterverse?????

  33. Wyoming85 says:

  34. steveccnv says:

Poyer was reported to have been signed by us, prematurely though, then it fell apart

  35. Wyoming85 says:

  36. I wonder if Tanner Conner surprises as a receiving TE/H-back in his 2nd season?

  37. Wyoming85 says:

Wonder who gets kicked out for intercepting the out of bounds pass first?

  38. son of a son of a shula says:

Sherbet is such a good blocker he’s been on nine different teams

  39. Rockphin says:

    Mannnn

    Maaannnnnnnn ooooooooh maaaannnnnnnnnnn

    MANOMAN

    AHHHHHHHHHHH

    I swore I wouldn’t do it again.

    OH YEAH!!!!!

  40. Is a guy like Taylor Lewan able to make the move to RT and flex back to LT if Armstead goes down? That dude is tough SOB.

  41. Rockphin says:

I cannot help but sip a little right guys? It’s justified?

I can’t help but easily imagining our offense clicking like it did when Tua was healthy ALL year and being at top 2-3 offense and having a top 10 D with Fangio coming in.

    Sip…..sip…..sip

  42. CavalierKong says:

    Woohoo, Koolaid man is back!

How can a Dolphins fan not be excited for this season? And we’re still not done.

    • Mike E. says:

My Jets fan friend showed me the odds for teams to make the SB. Jets are ahead of us. That’s how. lol

      • CavalierKong says:

When they finish 3rd in the division, the lamentation of Jest fans will be all the sweeter for their expectations, lol.

  43. On a need basis, the two areas of need right now to me are TE and OL. We need a pass catching TE and more competition and depth on the OL.

But when it comes to the OL lets not forget that playing the outside zone blocking schemes we use does not happen overnight. Mike Shanahan said it used to take him two years to get it to where he wanted it to be. The right personnel and the techniques. I’ll defer to the coaches on who they believe in because our view as fans is not the same way they see it.

  44. Randy says:

Wow, I’m glad Ramsey signed that big contract so he can buy himself some new drawers.

  45. Mike E. says:

Kong – there must also be lamentation of their women

  46. The Flying Pig says:

They were watching Heat game together

  47. Mike E. says:

I told my Jets fan friend IDGAF what the odds makers or anyone else said, we’re winning the SB this season. He responded it’s going to be interesting to watch. I responded it’s practically insane that we’re even having this discussion. I LOVE IT!!

  48. Randy says:

When I was a kid, we each got to pick what sort of ice cream and cake we got on our birthday. I picked chocolate cake and orange sherbet every year.

  49. Randy says:

    Kong,
It was the one time each year we actually got asked what the hell we wanted and not just told what we’d be getting, so detractors could F off! These were the days before every child had a $500 party with 20 kids! Lol

  50. pheloniusphish says:

Miami needs a place kicker still.

  51. Randy says:

Miami needs a competent OL still

    • Yep! They still need to add more talent and coach it up. Mike McDaniel and his staff are a year into this thing and Fangio is a seasoned vet. Landing him was as good as it could have been.

The addition of Ramsey is continuing to resonate with me. This dude is a badass defender. Along with X and Holland it’s not going to be easy for opponents. First you have to block the front. That won’t be easy either. The LB position has been validated with Long and Riley. Baker is our 3 down LB. Tindall making the jump could be huge. These are all read and chase type backers – who can blitz at times. Tackling is paramount. Fangio is a stickler for that from what I’ve read. Guys that don’t tackle don’t play.

      • CavalierKong says:

The safety we just picked up fits the strong tackler mold as well.

        From a Detroit fan site:

Displaying an elite level of tackling, Elliot received the ninth-highest grade (84.1) from Pro Football Focus and allowed the third-lowest total yards after the catch with 54.

  52. CavalierKong says:

I don’t remember who it was, but someone called the Pets as Geiscki’s landing spot.

  53. Wyoming85 says:

  54. The defense is already filling out. I still want to see more OL and TE. 😉

  55. Everyone race to the draft simulators for TE and OL. Maybe a RB. LOL

  56. The Flying Pig says:

    For Jumbo sets only….lol

    51: R2 P20 TE Darnell Washington – Georgia
    84: R3 P21 RB Zach Charbonnet – UCLA
    178: R6 P1 TE Davis Allen – Clemson
    238: R7 P21 TE Zack Kuntz – Old Dominion

    • For me blocking at TE is more important. We can still have 3 WR lead by Hill and Waddle, with whomever is 3rd and a RB. All our backs can catch the ball. That’s a form of max protect to get the ball to your best playmakers.

11 personnel is the staple offense in the NFL. The 4-2-5 however you want to rearrange it on defense is the counter.

  57. Randy says:

Fangio is old school, so he wants good tackling. But, what he does on defense is play a system that just doesn’t put guys in bad positions. It’s nothing really complex. His 2 high shell look is just designed to keep everything in front of you so guys can see the play happening and make the play.
    ***
We’ve been talking for a couple decades about how bad the tackling is in the NFL these days. They don’t practice it, and guys just don’t want to do it. Plus, they’re all taught to strip the ball these days. The key is getting multiple guys to the ball. Don’t rely on one player making the tackle.

  58. When you look at how deep our secondary is at this time it might make one want to ask for an extra cup of tea. 😉

  59. Think about the trio corner/safety core – X, Ramsey and Holland. That’s some scary shit. LOL

It really is and we’re bringing everyone else back too. 🙂

  60. Dean Chance says:

I hope this cat avatar suits.

  61. Dean Chance says:

I’m waiting on Brandon Shell to be re-signed.

  62. Mike E. says:

    Nice Avi Uwant!

  63. Mike E. says:

Man, so happy we re-signed Nik Needham. I was beginning to think it wasn’t going to happen. Love that guy, total gamer!

  64. Dean Chance says:

Thanks Mike. I agree with you re Nik Needham. He’s a total gamer.

  65. ukfinfan says:

Reminds me of Dark Ritchie a little in demeanour?

  66. naplesfan2010 says:

I know that I’m biased, but I do think the TE Allen from Clemson would be a good replacement for Gesicki. He’s a good enough blocker and a good enough pass catcher, sort of like Smythe only with quicker feet. But he isn’t as one-dimensional as Gesicki.

But yes definitely draft him after getting Darnell Washington to maul block.

I’m referring to the Pig’s draft above.

I think we should get Charbonnet too, but we only have 53 roster spots.

  67. naplesfan2010 says:

Needham is another guy who gave us 100%
and deserves to not get shunted to the side just because of an unfortunate injury.

    • steveccnv says:

Guys like Needham, that can play at a high level and don’t cost much are a Godsend

Add Kohou and Twill in there along with Elliott and we have a great mix at the back end of the D, to go with the high priced stars

  68. steveccnv says:

We just signed former jet OL Dan Feeney

    • steveccnv says:

Doesn’t thrill me, but after the injuries last year, if he makes the team he’ll be a welcome addition and Eichenberg insurance

  69. naplesfan2010 says:

So if we carry 10 DBs i.e.
    6 CBs and 4 Safeties

It’d be, as it stands today, maybe
    CB1A X
    CB1B Jalen
    CB3 Kohou
    CB4 Needham
    CB5 Trill or Crossen
    CB6 Iggy or Elijah Campbell
    Safety 1 Holland
    Safety 2 Brandon Jones
    Safety 3 DeShon
Safety 4 Verone McKinley or Tino Ellis

    That is a Tight Secondary.
They’ll hit you and they’ll pick you.

  70. steveccnv says:

Watched some highlights on Saubert, our new TE, he has some pass catching and run after catch ability, along with his blocking skills, if MM can bring the nasty out of he, he could be our Kittle

Work in progress for a while though, but he does have those skills

IMO what makes a TE great is his ability to use his nasty, think Gronk knocking defenders to the ground or Kelce or Kittle

Others like Tony Gonzalez, Gates, and Waller don’t have that and are more like a WR

We need to develop Saubert’s nasty to be an MM TE

  71. naplesfan2010 says:

Front End of the D (15 players max)
    DL
    Ogbah, Wilkins, Sieler, Davis, (Jenkins?)
    OLB
Phillips, Chubb, Goode, (van Ginkel?, Ingram?)
    ILB
Baker, Long, Riley, Tindall, (Elandon?, Eguavoen?)

I’d be happy if we went with all of those.
But we might need another ST guy like Fedjelem (sp) (also unsigned FA).

  72. bailbondmike says:

Who is OT Geron Christian and when did we add him?

  73. steveccnv says:

It was reported couple of months ago, that we could restructure contracts to clear 45m in cap space

With that in mind I said, we’d have enough cap to go after a mid range FA and basically do what we need to

3 days into FA our FO has done what I hoped and then some, with these lower end FAs we’ve signed, including several of our own Grier has done a masterful job

  74. bailbondmike says:

Naples, I had not brought up TE Davis Allen because when I read up on him (Lance Zierlein and TheDraftNetwork) I came away with the impression that he is just a much slower Gesicki. He ran a 4.84 at the combine.

    Top Reasons to Buy In:
    Catch radius
    Ball Skills
    Versatility

    Top Reasons For Concern:
    Change of direction
    Speed
    Run blocking

    • naplesfan2010 says:

4.84 is slow, but he did seem to get open very well in games I saw.
He’s not getting high ratings though,
as you say, so maybe he was just a product of Clemson’s system.

Sometimes, especially at a position like TE,
high football IQ can get you open in college,
but the guys are too quick in the NFL
      and too hard to outsmart.

  75. naplesfan2010 says:

    Steve
yes the on-site roster cannot include those who were reported to be signed during the tampering period but have not yet officially been announced.

  76. The Flying Pig says:

    • steveccnv says:

Calling an NFL team cheap is the most ridiculous thing you can say, unless we’re actually talking about being cheap with a cash payout

For example, Ross has no problem restructuring contracts , while paying out lots of cash upfront or in guaranteed form

      Mr Bukowski get a clue

      • The Flying Pig says:

It’s also not really money that’s the issue – it’s what the trade is. It sounds like the impasse between the teams is the trade comp

But jests fans will still call the team cheap anyway….lol

      • steveccnv says:

No fan should want their team to over compensate in a trade, in this instance the jets may have to make an exception

    • steveccnv says:

For sure the jets have no leverage, the longer this goes, the more desperate they’ll become

Jets season is riding on this 1 move, and GB knows it, either they give GB what they want or they’re screwed

  77. steveccnv says:

12.3m cap space, Hunter finally removed, David Long not there yet, Byron should be there until June 1st, 52 guys signed, so we’re now in a net signing period and whenever a new guy is signed, if he makes the top 51 we get to add to the cap the player’s cap he replaced, for top 51 salary cap figure

  78. steveccnv says:

If the season were to start today, sans a punter, we’d be just fine

  79. bailbondmike says:

Naples, I wasn’t concerned about Davis’s speed. They say he has good football IQ and is smart when attacking zone coverage. It was just the negative in blocking that got me.

  80. Dean Chance says:

Geron Christian the OT was signed just before week 18. He played in that game and the play-off one. Never saw a snap IIRC.

  81. The Flying Pig says:

Anyone know what’s left out there in terms of OL free agents?

  82. Dean Chance says:

TE Davis Allen is slower than Adam Shaheen. 4.84 to AS 4.79 and is an inch shorter and 30 pounds lighter. He is slow.

    • naplesfan2010 says:

But Allen’s at least 30 IQ points smarter than Shaheen.
Also those 40 times are 5 hundredths apart which is undetectable.
Also Allen was a star for one of the top programs in the country
while Shaheen played college ball at a D2 school that plays nobody.

    • The Flying Pig says:

      He can block though

I don’t really think we need to bring in speed at the Tight End position

We won’t be splitting the seam with our TE bc our offense throws to the wideouts in the middle of the field so much

We used Gesicki like a safety valve last year and it was kind of a waste of his talent IMO

We already open the field up with Hill and Waddle – we don’t need our TE to do that imo

  83. Dean Chance says:

If I was GM and DW was gone when it to my pick I would take Tucker Kraft or Sam Lamporta to be the move TE.

  84. bailbondmike says:

Davis Allen would give us what Gesicki did in the red zone. Blocking is the only knock for me. However, he still has to be better than Gesicki when it comes to blocking. I would find it hard for him to start at Clemson if he didn’t have some skills there.

    • steveccnv says:

      Better than Gesicki blocking…pass

Gesicki would be fine, if he didn’t run like a giraffe and could break a tackle, but if I’m looking for an MM TE he must be a good blocker

  85. bailbondmike says:

I am still all in on OL at #51.

  86. Rhino says:

I haven’t done the actual math, but it seems we resigned ALL 4 of our RBs for the price it would have cost for ONE top tier FA. With improved OL play our RBs can do damage AND we have depth.

  87. Rhino says:

Only thing I can say about Saubert is that he at least has found a way to stick around in the NFL … so there is Something there that keeps getting him another job. But I’m not banking on him to be “that guy” at TE … feels more like a depth signing, or a “just in case we miss out on other FAs or in the draft” signing.

    • naplesfan2010 says:

We need to carry 4 TEs and have at least 2 be good on STs,
so Smythe, Connor, Saubert are really good depth with good hands.

We need a stud maul-blocker from the draft
      cough Darnell cough

  88. bailbondmike says:

    51. Cody Mauch OT North Dakota State
    84. Matthew Bergeron OT Syracuse
    197. Camren McDonald TE Florida State
    238. Ben Sims TE Baylor

    • The Flying Pig says:

      Exactly….lol

That’s all I want to do
I’m pretty sure we are planning to use our TEs as 6th OL

    • naplesfan2010 says:

Considering the good work Grier’s done to fill CB and RB and ILB needs,
this is a good double-up draft.
Hoping one of each position sticks in the Bigs.

  89. Ken says:

  90. Ken says:

Best OL still out there is Taylor Lewan but he has an injury history. When healthy he’s a stud

    • The Flying Pig says:

I guess you can sign a guy like that with the extraction he will have an injury and will swap time with armstead and our other OL

It would be nice to sign a guy who can play 17 games

  91. mf13ss says:

  92. mf13ss says:

    • The Flying Pig says:

What? They signed Robert’s just to release Myles Jack

I haven’t watched Jack lately, but isn’t he still a very good coverage LB?

  93. The Flying Pig says:

    Steve

IDK what he has left, but KC feels he wasn’t quick enough, they upgraded at LT and are paying about 20m per year

Now that we have an actual PR, what is Cedrick Wilson going to do?

The Dolphins would listen to any offers on Cedrick Wilson, per Barry Jackson. A couple days ago NFL Network reported that he was valued in Dallas and that they might have interest in bringing him back. Definitely something to keep an eye on.

Looks like we can save 6m off of the cap, if he’s traded. He carries 7m in dead money, but that should be for guaranteed salary this year
