Dolphins very busy in Free Agency and Trades

So much has happened in the last week, my head is spinning. The day I wrote the last article the Dolphins traded for DB Jalen Ramsey. The moves kept coming in a flurry of activity. We all knew we had a lot of players to re-sign, and the Dolphins seemed to feel like they wanted to continue forward with many of the same players. Let me start with the RB depth, which we brought back intact, the entire RB roster. Raheem Mostert, Jeff Wilson, Salvon Ahmed and then recently, Myles Gaskin. I saw an interesting tweet the other day, basically stating that the SF 49ers discarded two of their main backs, Wilson and Mostert and decided to draft Elijah Mitchell and later acquire CMC in a big trade. So the essence of the tweet was basically the Dolphins backfield is led by two castoffs from the 49ers. Well, as we’ve all learned, one mans trash is another mans treasure. Mostert and Wilson both succeeded and played well here, and Ahmed and Gaskin are decent depth players. I’d be lying if I said I didn’t want to draft a RB, but now it will most likely be a later RD pick, because it seems like they made it a priority to bring the entire RB room back. Some young blood is a necessity, but this can also be accomplished as UDFA’s, like half of our depth was acquired, Salvon Ahmed. We drafted Gaskin in RD 7 in ’19.

So, let’s tally up who we brought in . . .

DB Jalen Ramsey (LA Rams)

RB Jeff Wilson (MIA)

RB Raheem Mostert (MIA)

RB Salvon Ahmed (MIA)

RB Myles Gaskin (MIA)

LB David Long (TEN)

LB Duke Riley (MIA)

DB Nik Needham (MIA)

TE Eric Saubert (DEN)

QB Mike White (NYJ)

WR Braxton Berrios (NYJ)

OG Dan Feeney (NYJ)

OT Geron Christian (MIA)

S Deshon Elliot (DET)

Some notable losses are LB Elandon Roberts (PIT), one of my favorites, and one of my former favorites, TE Mike Gesicki (NE). I’m very interested to see how both of these players fare on their new teams. I think Roberts fits the Steelers defense perfectly, he’s an inside thumper, coming off his best season. Gesicki is an enigma, we know he has receiving talent, but somehow we never managed to get as much as I thought we could get from him. Gesicki’s most productive season was in ’21, where he caught 73 passes for 780 yards and just 2 TD’s. I expected him to be a high volume pass catcher with a high YPR, but that never panned out. He’s definitely a red zone threat, and the Patriots would be wise to employ him often there.

With most of free agency moves in the books, the team still has a pocket full of draft picks left for 2023. Our fist pick is #51 in RD2, followed by a 3rd RD pick acquired from NE for DeVante Parker (#84). We have #197 in RD 6 from the Bears, and then finally #238 in RD 7. Remember there is also free agency after the draft, and I suppose there may be a few veteran castoffs that might fit here. We’re definitely pushing to go deep this year, and as we all know, the health of #1, QB Tua Tagovailoa is paramount to that success. Yes, we signed Mike White, who is a nice story being from FLA and a fan of our Dolphins, but Tua is the linchpin to the season. We have to keep him upright and healthy, but most of all he has to play smart and keep himself out of harms way. If throwing the ball away saves getting hit, so be it. He can play aggressively, but he can’t allow himself to be in a position where he will absorb punishment.

Vic Fangio has put his stamp on this free agency. First, the trade to bring Jalen Ramsey here. Ramsey is truly a multi faceted DB who can range anywhere from a cover corner on the perimeter, to an in the box LB on obvious passing downs. He’s an excellent piece that Fangio will love to employ. LB David Long, who wasn’t a full time starter last season in Tennessee, is also a versatile player. He’s an excellent tackler, but can also cover very well. I think the latter is the biggest reason why we chose him over Elandon Roberts, we need a LB that can not only make most the tackles expected, but cover as well, and that unfortunately, was not Roberts strong suit. I’m thrilled that we brought back Nik Needham, he’s been a favorite of my mine because he’s such a gamer, and always stepped up when needed. Hopefully he’s fully recovered and ready to go by the time the season begins. Fangio now has a very strong defense, with two very good cover corners (I believe the acquisition of Ramsey will invigorate Howard this season), a strong defensive line with Ogbah, Wilkins and Sieler, excellent pass rush ability and run defense from two very strong OLB’s (Phillips and Chubb), and then the addition of David Long to help out the extremely underrated and underappreciated #55, Jerome Baker. He played every game the last 2 seasons, and always gets the job done, and do multiple things, run and tackle from sideline to sideline, cover, and always end up with 100 or more tackles. Seems like every year we want to upgrade, and I get it, but I like Baker, and think we should all like him more than we do.

Sorry to be redundant, but with #1 on the field healthy, we will methodically use two of the best wideouts in the NFL, Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle. We brought the entire RB squad back, in 8 games Jeff Wilson averaged 4.7 YPC for 392 yards. Mostert averaged 4.9 YPC in 16 games for the Dolphins for 891 yards. One element of concern is that this is clearly a RB by committee approach, and none of our backs can truly shoulder a big load, and haven’t done so in their NFL careers. We have two obvious needs on offense right now, TE, and a young RB. You can argue against the latter, but I think we need to have a guy that carry the ball 20-30 times in a game and not be on the injured list the next week. I don’t care if it’s an UDFA as I mentioned earlier, but I wouldn’t mind if we spent a pick on one either. Eric Saubert is a blocking TE, and for the most part, so is Durham Smythe. To be fair, we don’t have a real receiving TE on the roster, so we may look to draft one early on, there are a few that should be available to us at either #54, or #84.

The Jets and Green Bay Packers are still working on a deal that would bring QB Aaron Rodgers to NY. Apparently, Green Bay’s compensation for Rodgers services is the holdup. I would say it’s safe to assume that both sides will eventually get it done, but Rodgers is a loose screw that can nullify the trade at any time, but if he wants to play this season, I just can’t see him playing again in GB. If the Jets do indeed get Rodgers, then the AFC landscape changes significantly. It will be a very tough 3 way race between the defending AFC East champion Buffalo Bills, NY Jets, and our Miami Dolphins. You can make an argument for any of the 3 as to why they can win, or why they will fail. Injuries are the devil, and we know all too well that if our QB played all 17 regular season games, we had a legitimate chance to be either the #2 or #3 seed. I think our roster is better now. The Bills sustained a substantial loss in LB Tremaine Edmunds, but managed to retain S Jordan Poyer, as well as pick up OG Connor McGovern from the Cowboys. The Jets signed WR Allen Lazard, purportedly because potential QB Aaron Rodgers requested them to do so. The Jets lost a pair of DT’s though, Sheldon Rankins (HOU) and Nathan Shepherd (NO). The Jets also re-signed K Greg (The Leg) Zuerlein, one of the best in the league. If Rodgers comes to the AFC East, it will be an absolute dogfight and potentially all 3 teams could secure playoff berths. Hopefully, 2023 is the one where the Miami Dolphins are on top!

GO DOLPHINS!!!!

BPA does not mean ignoring need. Often times there is a vertical and horizontal component to a draft board that balances need and BPA and talent. After the first 10 or so picks you start to see clusters of players with similar draft grades

    Mike E,

Do you truly despise Trump that much? I don’t understand the outright disdain for the guy from voters… but I do understand why the establishment/duopoly/MSM wants to destroy him.

I get that he’s braggadocious and most difficult to like… but he takes no BS, fights for America, kept promises, understands economics, is not a warmonger, and can’t be bought by politicians or foreign governments.

I mean, nobody likes to take cough syrup, but Trump is the cough syrup this country needs right now, IMO. Sometimes ya just have to pinch your nose and swallow the cough syrup, knowing it’s for the best.

M – honestly, I don’t think I’ve ever seen a President less presidential. He’s a narcissistic buffoon. He doesn’t give a flying fuck about anyone else but himself. There’s nothing righteous about him. It scares me honestly that people are ready to.embrace him running for POTUS. That’s part of the GOP problem unless someone else takes the reins. If it’s Trumps party, the GOP is doomed. I don’t hate him as much I just can’t tolerate him.

I can spell it out for you. He takes no responsibility for any of his failures. Instead he blamed and fired and threw the people he hired under the bus and did this time and time again. How many people did he hire and later fire in his cabinet and staff. He behaves like a petulant child always, always shooting blame elsewhere. He claimed that anyone who ran in the recent elections that won, won because he supported them, when in reality, people who lost lost because of any association they had with Trump. There is no one the GOP could put up that is absolutely hated by the other side as much as Trump is. People will come out of the woodwork to vote against him if he’s the GOP nominee. You need to get some votes from the other side, he’ll get none, and most likely there will be a record turnout to make sure he loses. Then he’ll claim once again that the election was fixed because fuckface can’t lose like a man, and we’ll have wasted another 4 years backing that asshat

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

DeSantis is the GOPs only hope IMO. No one else can dethrone Trump, and if Trump wins the nomination, enjoy another 4 years of Biden because too many independent and GOP voters see what a threat Trump is to our country and won’t vote for him.

This cycle it’ll only be his hardcore followers, he’ll lose worse than he did last time, and then we’ll get another tantrum when he loses.

OK, maybe get a grip. I liked Sherfield, but we have Hill, Waddle, Wilson, Berrios, Ezukanma, Cracraft, Sanders and Swain. I think we’re good.

  16. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

We do need a back-up edge rusher.
Behind Chubb and Phillips, we have the new guy Malik Reed and Cameron Goode, who didn’t make the 53 all last year. Both are a bit small for OLB.
Not sure why they don’t like van Ginkel,
but it’s like the Sherfield thing.
They could’ve re-signed him by now if they really wanted him,
and maybe they will if they can’t draft a guy,
    and he’s still out there.

Seems they don’t like Melvin Ingram, or maybe he’s too expensive.

But since a 3rd round OT is less than a 50/50 chance of becoming a starter,
maybe they should opt to draft an Edge rusher with #84,
since we have two stars to start at that position.
We have plenty of backup OTs.
We don’t need to draft any more of those.

We can get a quality backup Edge in the third.

It says on Over the Cap that Deiter signed with the Texans, so that’s a back-up Center gone. Who do we have who can play there? Feeney?

  22. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Drafting BPA vs BPA at a position of need

In 2024 we only have 32 players signed, so that really says more about our needs, than we think are our needs

MM didn’t exactly play the rookies last year, other than Skylar out of necessity

If you draft an OL or TE at 51, positions that traditionally take time to develop, how much do you expect them to play this year

Ok, so you didn’t draft them to play this year necessarily, then let’s move to 2024 you have an OL or TE, which you still don’t know much about or you have a true BPA at a position, that you need now in 2024

Bottom line is, once it’s time to depend on them, which would you rather have the more or less talented guy (all positions needed in 2024)

Over the Cap has us at 50k under, Spotrac has us at 2.8m under, Malik Reed is the only player not accounted for on either site

OTC has Mike White’s cap 4m too high, so I think Spotrac is a little closer to being accurate, but there’s still about a 1.2m difference, if you lower MW on OTC

So we’re somewhere between 2.8m and 4m under, awaiting Reed’s cap hit

  25. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Feeney signed for 1 year at 3.25m, seems to indicate he’s not just some depth signing, like Cotton and Christian at around 1m

Sure the best guy will play, but risk, and intentions play into the signing

  26. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

With the current cap figure what it is, we likely would have to work some more cap space, before signing anyone else, except low end guys

I know he’s just using Feeney as an example, but let’s say Gesicki plays all 17 games earns his bonus, so his adjusted salary would be 9m

You then factor in all the FAs we lost vs those signed

Gesicki could still get us a good comp pick

With what you saw last season and what the team has done thus far tonight’s question is what does the team need to do next season record-wise or playoffs-wise or both for you, as a fan of the team, to consider 2023 a successful season?

I’d say win the division or a playoff game

Losing a home playoff game after winning the division would be disappointing, but still would consider it a successful season

    • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

This has been such a fun and exciting offseason. I am so amped for the season I looked into the whole Youtube thing last night.

So for those that may not have a good level of familiarity with youtube, the way the NFL Sunday Ticket through Youtube is going to work is one of two ways:

A: If you subscribe to Youtube Tv, you can get the Sunday Ticket as an add on. Youtube TV is a minimum $73 per month. It is unclear at this point if you will get any discount on the cost of Sunday Ticket if you order that add on, but I wouldn’t bet on it.

B: You can create a free Youtube account which gives you access to Youtube Premium channels. Youtube Premium Channels allows you to order streaming services ala carte, and this will include Sunday Ticket. You can create a free account and pay for nothing except Sunday Ticket.

FINALLY we can order just the Sunday Ticket! Can’t wait for the season!!

  45. Ken, I agree BPA does not mean ignoring need. That’s what I’ve been saying. When the value meets the need it’s the perfect storm.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Yes it does, it’s either straight BPA or it’s a need BPA

At any position the team will benefit more on avg in the 2025 season, by going straight BPA

      • Well I don’t see it that way. Ken was mentioning a vertical and horizontal board and we’ve discussed this before. The horizontal board becomes a vertical board.

A team might have 15 1st round grades. As an example it looks like this. These grades are for multiple positions.
        1a, 1a, 1a, 1a, 1a
        1b, 1b, 1b, 1b, 1b
        1c, 1c, 1c, 1c, 1c

As the those prospects come off the board you cross them off and when you’re up, if a few of the above are still there and it’s close, you have a discussion on which prospect makes the most sense for your team and you make a decision. That’s what it means following your board.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I agree with the horizontal board is used, and I believe all teams use it

I think straight BPA is a myth, no team uses it

      • Agreed, because prospects aren’t graded 1 through 10 etc. 7 isn’t necessarily better than 9 but you have to put someone first in a vertical. That’s why teams don’t set up their boards that way.

When we look at draft sites that rank prospects on their big board we always see it done vertically. But that doesn’t mean 38 is clearly better than 52. They’re just taking a shot at ranking them. But like Ken mentioned earlier there are clusters. 6 or 7 guys are all worthy of going when a team is on the clock. Team draft the guy they like for their team.

  46. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Perhaps we should be thanking AVG’s wife for him turning down the Pets and staying with us for what might be less money…

  47. It shouldn’t be that difficult to find a backup NT who may only play a handful of snaps in any given game. They might not even be active some weeks. We need one though in case Davis gets hurt. We’re probably not going to play a NT more than 20 snaps because we’ll be a nickel and dime most of the time.

We could find this player in FA that isn’t a premier talent but they have the size and strength to hold their own at the point of attack over center when needed. We could also find this player in the draft or UDFA. There will be competition and we’ll see who wins that backup NT role.

We’ve got the right makeup to score points on offense and to play competitive defense and STs. This is the most talented roster we’ve had in a long time. Even the national networks see that.

  53. When thinking about being a top defense, what you need on the field is this:
A 4 man pass rush that can also play the run.
2 off-ball LBs that are versatile.
5 DBs that can cover and tackle.

Sounds simple and obvious but it’s not always easy to find that. We do have that if we’re not hit with too many injuries.

    • Not sure we can land a stud in FA because there really weren’t many available in FA in our price range. I think the draft and June 1st cuts will be our avenue to add to it. We currently have 11 OL on the roster. It’s not just about new players but young guys who can take the next step. Health was our issue last year. We were 8-3 and rolling until the injuries hit QB even more than OL.

  57. With the way our roster has been handled in FA with bringing back our own and adding some new, we can see what positions need a jolt. OL and TE. It would not shock me if we use our 4 picks on two TE and two OL.

This team can compete with what we have now. No team is loaded at every position. You win with playmakers and we have a lot of them. 🙂

    ————
Tennessee is rightly a 5 and 1/2 favorite. THERE’s ABSOLUTELY NO DOUBT THAT THE VOLS PLAYED A MUCH TOUGHER SCHEDULE THAN DID THE OWLS. But I believe being the underdog is a significant advantage for FAU. They know they’re NOT expected to win this contest.
    ———–
BUT they also know that MEMPHIS lost to FAU right after they defeated the number one team in the country, the university of Houston, in the American Athletic Conference Championship Game. Logic says if you defeat the #1 team in the country,YOU SHOULD BEAT FLORIDA ATLANTIC!! But that’s NOT what happened. FAU beat one team from the state of Tennessee (Memphis) and, in my opinion, has a wonderful chance to beat ANOTHER TEAM FROM TENNESSEE in the highly regarded Volunteer team.
    ———-
FAU has yet to play their best game in March Madness. They’ve been inconsistent in both the Memphis game and the Farleigh-Dickinson game. Yet, like most 33-3 teams, the Owls found a way to win when they were NOT clicking on all cylinders. Will Thursday night be the night when FAU plays their best game so far in “March Madness?”
    ———-
It will take Florida Atlantic’s best game to beat this mighty team from the S.E.C.
And they may need a little help from Lady Luck. If the Basketball Gods smile on FAU, I am predicting a 78-77 overtime victory for my old alma mater!! GO-O-O OWLS!!

I’m right there with you, but I’ve seen this script before, NV got to the sweet 16 about 18 yrs ago, same Cinderella type story, only to get trampled by Illinois

  67. Even as it is so far, I kind of like the idea of a 6 man line – TE Smythe or Saubert at TE with Tua and a RB, and Hill, Waddle and Berrios etc. at WR. We have lots of speed and skill at RB and WR.

Then we go big here and there with a FB in Ingold and two TEs – Smythe or Saubert both seasoned vets who can also sneak out as receivers. All of our RBs are good receivers so that option is always there.

If Tua takes his next step, our offense is going to be scary.

  68. It seems like Malik Reed and AVG replaces Ingram and David Long replaces Roberts. Long is an ascending player.

Remember we also get Ogbah back in the front 3, 4 or 5.

  71. Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

    From ESPN article:

What is the most improved team after the past week of moves?

Bell: Miami Dolphins. The Dolphins said goodbye to cornerback Byron Jones (who missed all of 2022 while recovering from Achilles surgery) and added six-time Pro Bowler Jalen Ramsey to play alongside Xavien Howard. Couple that upgrade with the very reasonably priced re-signings of running backs Raheem Mostert and Jeff Wilson Jr. — two Mike McDaniels disciples from their 49ers days who have proven adept at jointly executing his brand of offense — and the Dolphins have fared nicely.

Clay: Dolphins. They already had a pretty good core in place, but the Dolphins’ additions of Ramsey, David Long Jr. and DeShon Elliott position defensive coordinator Vic Fangio with arguably the league’s best unit on paper. The offense didn’t require much work, so if quarterback Tua Tagovailoa is healthy and continues to play well — he was third in QBR in 2022 — Miami could emerge as a real threat next season.

Walder: Dolphins. I was already bullish on the Dolphins’ defense once Vic Fangio came aboard to be the defensive coordinator. But after they added Ramsey to play opposite Howard at cornerback and Long to play linebacker up the middle, I think the defense could be a serious strength. That’s remarkable because, when healthy, the Dolphins’ offense also can be a serious strength.

    • Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

I don’t get, “The offense didn’t require much work,” comment….lol.

We couldn’t protect any of our QBs who all got hurt multiple times during the season….oh my. We were on our 3rd string QB for the playoffs and HE was hurt…geez, loueez.

…..dripping with sarcasm….so now we should draft a CB or DL or LB or Edge or S if one falls to us because it’s BPA? At 51 and 89? I see no logic in this scenario for the Dolphins….seriously, none.

Dolphins Potential Draft Target: LB Daiyan Henley

Scouting report on Washington State linebacker Daiyan Henley and how he would fit with the Dolphins
    DANTE COLLINELLI22 HOURS AGO

….It wouldn’t happen overnight, but Henley is the correct prototype to start investing in. Not to mention, he can play wide receiver in a pinch and is an all-conference special teams standout.

Odds Henley makes it to 51

There are a couple of reasons to feel good about Henley making it to 51 and even Miami’s pick in the third round. The main one is the value of linebackers. Teams aren’t valuing them as much anymore, and most mock drafts only show one or two going in the top 50 picks. Usually, those players are some combination of Clemson’s Trenton Simpson, Arkansas’ Drew Sanders and Iowa’s Jack Campbell. Henley isn’t considered a household name, even in an underwhelming linebacker group. Additionally, Henley’s age might scare teams away. Some teams refuse to draft players who have played longer than five years in college. Of course, it only takes one team to fall in love with a player, but Henley’s combination of age, lack of linebacker experience and specialized skill set should push him down the board, possibly even into Day 3.

    Dolphins Bringing Back Van Ginkel
The Miami Dolphins have now re-signed 11 of their 2023 free agents
    OMAR KELLY19 HOURS AGO

The Miami Dolphins have retained one of Chris Grier’s most productive late-round draft picks, re-signing linebacker Andrew Van Ginkel to a one-year deal.

Van Ginkel, who started 31 of the 56 games he played with Miami the past four years, visited the New England Patriots last week and had some discussions with the Las Vegas Raiders, but the former Wisconsin standout decided to return to the Dolphins on Tuesday, according to a source.

Van Ginkel, a fifth-round pick in the 2019 NFL draft lost his starting outside linebacker role after Miami acquired Bradley Chubb in a trade from the Denver Broncos but still contributed in various schemes, finishing the 2022 season with 47 tackles, one interception and half a sack.

VAN GINKEL A VALUABLE DEPTH PLAYER FOR THE DOLPHINS
During his career, he’s contributed 181 tackles (23 for loss), 11 sacks, one interception and forced four fumbles.

His return strengthens Miami’s depth on the edges of the defense, and follows the signing of former Denver and Pittsburgh linebacker Malik Reed, who started 36 of the 59 games he’s played in the past four seasons, contributing 143 tackles and 16 sacks.

Van Ginkel likely will serve as a backup to Emmanuel Ogbah, Jaelan Phillips and Chubb, and again play a large role on Miami’s special teams units after he finished third on the team in special teams snaps in 2022.

Melvin Ingram and Trey Flowers, two other edge players from the 2022 team, remain free agents.

Wonder if Fangio is planning on using Ramsey all over the place, to shut down a certain player, or just to disguise the looks of what D we’re in

Maybe Fangio figured out, in his year off, the best way to fool an O is having multiple position players, nothing really new, but maybe new to him

Maybe he picked the Fins, because they were closest to already having the multiple position D, then getting Ramsey moved his plan to infinity

IDK I’m just baffled at why it’s been unanimous we won FA, is Ramsey that good?

Every time I watched him make a play he was grabbing or holding the receiver, guess what sets him apart is his overall play, including how physical he is

Shell would also be a smart re-sign since he knows the system and played well

I don’t think we have to go crazy on OL
And I think we can sign some one like Shell or James and then use the draft to take BPA

That BPA might be our future RT
But maybe it’s a TE or even a RB

Protecting Tua should also be about building a better run game
That can be done by improving personnel on OL, or improving personnel TE (a TE who supports the run game rather than another receiver) or a RB who can be a workhorse

I don’t think we daft a RB early, I would rather sit and see if some one releases a vet RB or lowers trade demands after June, but if drafted a RB high, I would understand it

People are of course gonna say that’s flash and not meat and potatoes – but a consistently reliable running game is meat and potatoes, nothing is more valuable to protecting our QB than running the ball IMO
