Dolphins roster nearly complete – Do we draft for this season or beyond?

As Naples was able to convey so clearly, this roster is basically set. There are only a couple of spots on the roster in which anyone drafted in this 2023 NFL Draft can make even the slightest impact on this season, and beyond. With that in mind, let’s once again look at those spots and the players that could have a chance to make that impact. To me, Tight End is the easiest. We have two blocking TE’s, Durham Smythe and Eric Saubert, and then we have a tweener, Tanner Conner, who was a former college WR converted to a TE. Realistically though, Conner is at best what we hoped former Dolphins TE Mike Gesicki, a dangerous receiver. Neither Smythe or Saubert has proven that they can be reliable receivers, but Conner has elite speed for the position (4.37 40) and hops as well with a nearly 40″ vertical. I’ve already illustrated that neither TE is a true receiving threat between Smythe and Saubert, they have a total of 121 receptions, 88 for Smythe over 5 seasons, and 33 over 6 seasons for Saubert, 3 TD’s for Smythe, 2 for Saubert. Those career totals don’t add up to one season for Niners TE George Kittle, who HC Mike McDaniel had the services of in SF as the Offensive Coordinator.

This brings us to Darnell Washington, who already has established that he’s a solid in-line blocking TE, with the size to get bigger, and he’s already shredded. His pass catching is more on potential than actual production, or he’d likely be the first TE off the board. Taking into account that TE is probably one spot where someone could potentially slide into early on, I wouldn’t be upset if we traded up to get him, and it looks that might be a necessity to guarantee he’s on our roster. If your roster is already mostly set, and you only have 4 picks, none of them on day one, and two of them on day 3, I see nothing wrong with acquiring one impact player in exchange for one of our 3 other picks. I think Washington has the size and speed to become a good receiver, and the fact that he could line up now and block on the line and downfield just as easily makes him an easy choice.

Another position where I think a player could help us right away is RB. Let’s face it, we have a RB room that screams “Running Back by Committee!!” There’s not one feature back on our roster, and one half of our RB room is signed through ’24, the other half on year contracts. Adding a versatile RB like Jamhyr Gibbs would be an easy pick. Gibbs increased his carries and receptions each year, and was a big part of the Alabama offense. He has a similar skillset to Mostert, Ahmed and Gaskin, in that he’s a very good receiver out of the backfield, can run either between the tackles, and has the speed to break a big run at any time with 4.36 speed. Mostert had career highs in carries (181) and yards (891) in his 8 year career. Wilson also had career highs last season, splitting the season between the Niners and Dolphins, finishing with 176 carries and 860 yards. None of our backs have played an entire season as a lead back getting the lions share of carries. Adding some young talent to the pool makes sense. Improve the depth, and very likely, one of either Ahmed or Gaskin would be either released or traded.

To me, it sure seems like the Dolphins staff is committed to developing OG Liam Eichenberg. If it were up to Ken, we’d have already moved on from Eich, but even Ken knows we invested an early 2nd RD pick, in order to do so we traded up from #50 and traded an additional 2022 3rd pick to get to #42 to take the Notre Dame OL. It’s sensible to get something back on your investment if you truly see the potential there. He absolutely has not realized that potential as of yet, and RT Austin Jackson is certainly on his last chance, being 2024 would be the fifth year option for Jackson, a $14M + decision, in which Jackson would need a standout year to have the Dolphins pick up that 5th year option. To think the Dolphins may spend another 2nd RD pick on an OL is not folly. I don’t think anyone here would be disappointed if we went that direction. Once again, there are a couple of interior OL that could give Eich a run for his money in this draft. TCU OG Steve Avila is a massive lineman, 6’3.5, 332 lbs., who is very light on his feet for such a big guy. He’s also a team captain, leader of men, and could potentially be a day one starter. Many here feel we need to upgrade the O-line, Avila could remedy that. Another OL I’ve mentioned is OL John Michael Schmitz. He is widely considered to be the top interior lineman, specifically OC prospect. I know some people get bent out of shape when you say we could move C Connor Williams to OG, (where he played 4 seasons for the Dallas Cowboys) and have Schmitz at C. Williams is a very solid player who played every-single-snap last season at C. He struggled some with high snaps, but otherwise it was hard to criticize his play. Schmitz is a true C that could step in day one, and moving Connor Williams to LG gives us a strong left side, with Armstead at LT and Williams at LG.

There’s always different ways to look at things, and we may just end up being patient, see who falls to our spot at each draft pick, and end up with 4 players, or we might get aggressive and package a pick or two to get a player. I’d prefer the latter, as I feel if we’re going to draft players in the 2nd RD and 3rd RD, these players better be roster worthy and at least in my estimation, should have some impact, even in their rookie season. Keep in mind we drafted LB Channing Tindall last season who made zero impact last season, but we’ve also seen Grier trade up for players he wants as he did with OG Liam Eichenberg. Whatever they do, I just hope these players we draft make our team better not only in the future, but this year as well.

GO DOLPHINS!!!

    SBJakeScott,
This is more of a perspective thing, we’ve all met for the most part. Would love to meet you at a fest by the way. Anyway I think if you’d met all involved it might look different to you. Quite possibly what was actually said doesn’t match to what was absolutely heard and that’s all I’ll say about that.

Florio has no value in and of himself.
He can only perpetuate his “career” by riding a manufactured story line,
cobbled together via insinuation and making what appear to be valid connections between dots that themselves don’t actually exist. The connections make sense, so the underlying fake premise is made to seem like it’s true, but since the dots (facts) don’t actually exist, they cannot be contradicted, so Florio’s conclusions cannot be defeated.

He did come across as shallow and reaching for validation. I thought his “opinion” about Tua and his training seemed smarmy. Simms held him off, kinda, but relented in the end. While it sounds funny to train how to fall, there is a certain grace to it. Lol…I have fallen a lot and for some reason I seem to know how. Practice?

I’ll take this. Oliver Hodgkinson’s 2023 NFL Mock Draft (3 rounds).

    51) Miami Dolphins: Mazi Smith, DT, Michigan
The Miami Dolphins are the new poster boy for “F*** them picks” and have just four selections in the 2023 NFL Draft. Hitting on those could be the difference between Super Bowl or bust, and opening this 2023 NFL Mock Draft with Mazi Smith gives the Dolphins a freakish athlete with the size and power to man the nose tackle position in Vic Fangio’s defense.

    84) Miami Dolphins: Nick Saldiveri, OT, Old Dominion
The Dolphins look for answers at multiple spots on their offensive line with a lineman with excellent versatility. Old Dominion’s Nick Saldiveri boasts good footwork, hand usage, and a strong lower body with a similarly strong athletic profile.

Don’t know a whole lot about OT Saldiveri but hear he is climbing draft boards.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

OTs taken outside of rd 1 have less chance to make an impact in their rookie season, than a journeyman vet does

I like the idea of DT at 51, but this guy is all over the place with F the picks to using who they do pick to get over the hump

    • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

I have seen Saldiveri as low as a day 3 pick and as high as a 3rd round pick. There are many differing opinions on him. He was a 3 year starter at RT. TDN gave him a 3rd round grade while PFN gave him a 7th round grade.

This is some info from TheDraftNetwork:

      Top Reasons To Buy In:
      – Refinement as a pass-blocker
      – Versatility
      – Short-area athletic ability
      – Size

      Top Reasons For Concern:
      – Inconsistencies in the run game
      – Average second-level blocker
      – Initial hand placement
      – Size – Height: 6′ 6”, Weight: 318 lbs, Arm Length: 33 1/4”

Ideal Role: Swing offensive lineman who will be a strong reserve or serviceable starter

Scheme fit: Zone-run scheme with high amounts of passing volume.

      Prospect Comparison: Connor Williams

TDN Consensus Grade: 75.50/100 (Third-Round Value)

  7. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Went back and watched D. Washington again last night, after MF13 took him off his wish list, and nothing has changed for me, if he’s there at 51 pick him

I don’t care about his speed, how he lumbers on routes, or anything else negatively said about him, he fits what I think we need, extra blocker and tough to stop receiving on 3rd down

  26. M13, most mocksters I’ve been listening to or reading are saying this is the deepest TE draft in like a decade. Meaning there are a lot of solid prospects that could be good NFL players. It doesn’t mean it has the best TE talent ever seen, just that there are a good amount of quality prospects.

You seem to see a lot of flaws in many of them and maybe focusing on blocking too much. College teams play a lot like NFL teams and we all know TEs that can add to the passing game are coveted even if their blocking isn’t up to par. A lot of times many of these guys aren’t even asked to block the way it used to be. 11 personal is the most common formation in college and the NFL on offense. Sometimes the TE blocks and sometimes the RB does. Sometimes they just chip and then go out into the route.

We have blocking TEs when we need it especially if we want to go 12 and 22 personal. I don’t believe a pass catching TE or the blocking TE or 2 TEs tips your hand when on the field. You can still run a lot of different plays out of multiple formations.

To me the problem with Gesicki was not just blocking but his limited route tree. The only routes he’s productive on is when he gets moving down the field. He’s not good in the short passing game and to me that means inside of 10 yards. He’s a galloper who can’t stop and go.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I maintain that our next starting TE must be able to block. The Shanahan Offense likes multiples, obviously so and most understandable in 12 personnel, right? Yes.

Thus, I don’t believe we’re looking for a strict seam-threat TE… George Kittle is the key to understanding what we would like to do at the TE position. And I’m not so sure that’s JMO. 😉

He simply does not miss tackles.

  33. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Pro football network says he is battling through Sanders and another for the top linebacker spot.

    3) Jack Campbell, Iowa
At 6’5″ and 249 pounds, Jack Campbell was a force in the middle of Iowa’s vaunted defense. He’s one of the most consistent and seasoned defenders in the 2023 NFL Draft, making his projection effortless.

Campbell has the length to wrap up tackles, shed blocks, and disrupt passing lanes. Plus, he moves like a more diminutive player in space, with the short-area quickness and read/react ability to close on the ball. There are more athletic and imposing linebackers in the class, but teams will covet Campbell’s no-nonsense skill set.

  34. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

I think sanders will come off the board first because of his ““ measurable‘s” there are a lot of teams with a lot of needs and everybody can’t go in his first 50 picks. I believe we have a shot at him and if he is there we should take him.

    Zack Thomas 2.0

  35. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

We have been gashed up the middle for years because our linebackers are not in the right position and or miss too many tackles. I think Campbell will be a pro bowler in Fangio’s defense by his second season.

    —————–
BELIEVE ME! Marshawn is totally a 4/20 guy!!! LOL

  37. Brian Ulracher went #9 in the draft. It’s hard to compare prospects to him and expect that type of player in the 2nd round. Obviously great LBs have come from many rounds outside of the 1st round. But Ulracher was considered a no-brainer and he was.

    • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

I’m at 13 compared Sanders to Urlacher who I believe will go in the first round. I think Jack Campbell may be around at 51 and if he is there I think we should pick him. I believe he will be a pro bowl linebacker.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Keep in mind that Urlacher came out as a senior at New Mexico… there’s still untapped potential with the SEC player who is Drew Sanders. He played EDGE after being recruited by Nick Saban out of high school, and just moved inside at Arkansas this past season.

Sanders’ ceiling is WAY off the charts… and that’s likely why he’ll be gone by the time we pick @ 51.

  38. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

    Not f’ing spam!!

  39. Not saying don’t draft an off-ball LB but the team might feel good about Baker, Long, Riley and Tindall. Even Van Ginkel can do that at times although he’s more OLB/Edge. We’re going to play with 5-6 DBs a lot of the time. Keep that in mind.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Drew Sanders, should we draft him, wouldn’t be an off-ball LB, man. I mean, he could be drafted as much, but he excelled and finally made noise on the inside last year at Arkansas.

IMO, should Sanders get drafted early, it would be as an ILB/MLB. Those are the traits he possesses.

  40. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

    Rockphin,

IF Jack Campbell is there @ 51, I do believe we’ll consider him, Bro. He’s the consummate run-stopper, a natural leader, and he has a ceiling that has yet to be reached.

    • He definitely won’t be on the roster next year at that price. But it’s all about 2023 now. I don’t see a rookie taking playing time away from Baker, Long or Riley this year. Tindall is the wildcard already on the team. We’re only going to see 2 or 1 off-ball LBs on the field on a regular basis.

Run defense always starts up front.

      • Fangio was definitely involved in adding Long and bringing back Riley and Van Ginkel. Cameron Goode competing. Added a similar player in Malik Reed with some connections there. I’m sure Vic dug into the film and said these guys can play the kind of defense I’m looking for. Baker is a good player and Tindall is a young buck with projected upside.

Fangio is known as a stickler when it comes to fundamentals. You won’t see the field if you don’t do the basics. He’s got a lot of good players to work with.

  62. Rock, the way it looks to me is you’re only perennial if you have the QB.

So I almost traded one of my vintage guitars for a telle with a guy here locally, but the neck was bent and was already maxed out so we couldn’t even adjust the neck trust to to even come close to a deal ☹️

So, the Lions lose 2 WR’s for a year and 2 others, including their star WR, for 6 months.

Looks like we may have a potential trade partner for Cedric Wilson after all.

    Lions picks:
Round 1, Pick 6 overall (from LAR)
    Round 1, Pick 18 overall
    Round 2, Pick 48 overall
Round 2, Pick 55 overall (from MIN)
    Round 3, Pick 81 overall
    Round 5, Pick 152 overall
Round 5, Pick 159 (from JAX via ATL)
Round 6, Pick 183 overall (from DEN)
    Round 6, Pick 194 overall

The Lions also have 27 mil in cap space (top 51).

I would love to get one of their 5th round picks for Wilson.

    • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

This is not a good draft for WR, not very deep. Also, they have huge needs on defense, especially secondary. They are a lock to draft a CB in the 1st. They also have a need at Safety.

Rumor has it that they are eyeing DT Jalen Carter at #6 and CB at #18. They will be looking at Safety, OL, RB, LB, and/or TE on day 2.

Drafting WR was not really in their plans from what I have read and they were looking to double down on CB in this draft.

      Get on the phone Grier!

    Your Picks
    R2 P20 LB Jack Campbell – Iowa

    Team Picks
    51: R2 P20 RB Jahmyr Gibbs – Alabama
    84: R3 P21 LB Drew Sanders – Arkansas
    178: R6 P1 TE Blake Whiteheart – Wake Forest
    R7 P21 K Jake Moody – Michigan

  72. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Rock, I will take either draft. Moody is a good kicker. Just wonder if they go young or with a vet for competition.

Gould is out there but rumor has it he wants to play close to his family in Chicago.

    • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Either way, there will be kicker competition.

    • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

I was challenged to find a new kicker, I think due to my desire to replace Sanders the past few years, LOL and Moody is a perfect fit all around.

Sanders is due $3.3M with zero cap hit this season and a $4M average left on his deal until 2026

It’s a perfect time to upgrade at the highest scoring position on the team.

  73. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

    Your Picks
R2 P20 TE Luke Musgrave – Oregon State
    R3 P21 LB Jack Campbell – Iowa

Sanders even looked grim in his arrival pic on the first day back.
I think he knows he’s reached the moment
where he’s overpriced for his production.

He could beat the new guy out,
but if they do their homework and bring in the right guy,
it’ll be tough to justify paying Sanders all that money to make 3 out of 4 FGs.

It depends on which topic your speaking about. If it’s about ORob and me, he is not even close to 100% accurate. One might even say he is lying. I know that’s what the evidence shows. Or, we can just say he is a Master Revisionist creating Alternative Facts.
    _____

Well I was challenged to show evidence even though You nor anyone else were willing to do it yourselves so here goes:

The link gives the whole context of the exchange and the quotes are from the end of the exchange. You antagonized and insulted him for months for mere opinions about football and here he is pleading with you to keep it football or leave him alone.
There’s nothing in the pages following where there’s any kind of attack either.
I was certainly no fan or friend of Orob, so I’m not out here ‘blindly supporting my boy’. I just ask that people be honest.

how about if I start stalking you? how would you feel about that? what if i started making fun of you? what if i included your deceased wife? how would you feel about that? it seems you are trying to drag me down to your level.
I don’t like you and never will, that’s why i steer clear of you. if you & I were at a fest we would not talk.
so let me ask you in a nice way to please stop stalking me.
    Thanks in advance

Thank you for bringing this forward….like some of you like to cherry pick. Go back and read through January 4, 2022 where Mike E. asks him specifically to please not bring in family. And, his answer was “FUCK THAT.”

      Un-fucking-believable!

Glad you did your own fucking homework! And, I hope everyone else does there’s if they care. But, let’s bring all this shit forward.

Krishna spent the better part of a year personally ridiculing and passive aggressively attacking ORob for his opinions on Tua and ORob asked him if he thought his wife would approve of the way he was acting. Krishna then had a meltdown, played victim and got ORob banned for grossly misrepresenting what he said. David was banned for basically doing what Krishna did to Orob, except David was more blatant in his approach.

Their logo appears on the side of their helmets. This vile company has a strong presence on the internet – – – way too strong in my opinion. I hope BOTH U.S. political parties can find a way to legally get “Tic-Tock” run out of the United States on a permanent basis. They need to be shot down like a cheap Chinese “weather balloon.”
