NFL Draft is Thursday – Dolphins need to find players to take them to the top

Now that A-aron is coming to the Jets, there’s no reason to pick up players that won’t make an immediate impact for this team. We have a window to win, and we need to make sure whatever players we add in this draft can help our team right now. This could be a TE, and you all know which TE I want, but in case you don’t, it’s Georgia TE Darnell Washington. I think this kid is ready to play right now, he can block, and he’s an underrated receiver. A RB like Jahmyr Gibbs from Alabama could be an electric player who could see some immediate playing time and spark this offense. We could also look to solidify the O-line, because each and every one of us know that we need a healthy Tua to win. We can’t have a leaky O-line, and there are a couple of question marks on our line at the moment. To be fair, most NFL teams have the same situation, but we have one excellent LT with a a very real injury history, Terron Armstead. Armstead somehow played 13 games last season, but he was questionable every single week with injuries. Our LG might have the confidence of the FO and the coaches, but Liam Eichenberg does not have the full confidence of the Dolphins fanbase. The same goes for RT Austin Jackson, 2020 1st RD pick, who will be protecting Tua’s blind side. There’s a couple of OT’s that may be around our first pick, North Dakota State’s Cody Mauch and Ohio State’s Dawand Jones. If we’re looking to upgrade the interior line, there’s Minnesota’s John Michael Schmidt and TCU’s Steve Avila.

It seems obvious to me that we are playing within a 2 year window. Our QB is relatively inexpensive this year and next, our most dynamic player, WR Tyreek Hill has declared he will stop playing in 2025, and our roster is as set as it’s going to be, many players on short deals. Our time is now, and with Aaron Rodgers playing QB for the NY Jets, most likely for 2 years, their window matches our window. I think our defensive roster at the moment is the best, most talented defensive roster we’ve had in decades. Our defense is ready. Add in the fact that we have DC Vic Fangio calling the shots for our defense now, I feel like we could be special. We brought back the entire RB room from last year, not because they were great, they were effective, but not great. It wouldn’t surprise me in the least if we looked to a young RB to spark this group. We know who we have at TE, and Tim can continue to stroke Durham Smythe, Eric Saubert and Tanner Conner, but realistically, this is a weak TE group. Smythe is a decent blocker, meh as a receiver. Saubert seems like he’s a blocking TE who is a blocking TE. Who knows what Conner can be, we haven’t taken off the wrapping paper yet. We may have to move up to get the RB, TE, or OL we want, but that shouldn’t stop us. Just get better, our roster is set as it’s going to be, whomever we add needs to be worthy!

Next year we can add some more depth players, but with limited picks in this draft, we need quality, not quantity. Our time is NOW! What I’m saying is I don’t want to see us trading back and picking up 2 more picks so we can draft guys who will struggle to make the roster, let alone see the field. That’s not where we’re at. I’m sure Chris Grier is well aware of this, so I wouldn’t bet on that happening. Usually I’m pumped up about the draft, but this one is not the same, armed with only a 2nd, 3rd, 6th and 7th RD picks. We’ve been trading away picks to get the players we wanted, so now we have to use the picks to do the same. I know we all have different ideas of what the right picks should be, Hulk may get angry if our first pick is a RB and not an OL. He may be right, but it sure does seem as if the coaching staff feels that Eich and Jackson are the guys going forward. We’ll see in a couple of days. Doubt we’ll be picking in RD 1, Stephen Ross made sure of that. I wouldn’t mind if we picked early in RD 2, earlier than #51, our current first pick.

GO DOLPHINS!!!!

IT’s ALL OVER IN SUNRISE!! The Florida Panthers came from behind to defeat the heavily favored Boston Bruins 7-5 in front of a delirious home crowd in south Florida!!

The Panthers will fly to Boston for game 7 on Sunday. They have a chance to be the first team in NHL history to be down 3 games to 1 and defeat a team that won 60 or more games in the same season. Boston won an NHL record 65 games this season. But it won’t mean much if they lose on Sunday!

  30. Speed committee RB. Run and catch explosiveness. I like the pick. He’s the lesser Gibbs but 3rd round.

  31. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

well he’s got some wiggle and slip in addition to that blazing speed,

  35. Achane looks like smaller version of Fournette but faster. He runs similar and both can catch the ball. 5-8.5 188 is not a frail guy. Short, quick and fast guys out of the backfield are dangerous. We’re definitely a speed team on offense.

I have a feeling a couple of the players they wanted were gone and Cam Smith was their BPA at #51. These first 2 picks seem to be for the future with Achane having an impact sooner than Smith.

    • I wouldn’t be surprised if Smith plays STs and in nickel and dime early on. He’s got 4 seasons of snaps against good competition. He’s going to push some guys already on our roster. You may not have liked the pick but the value was there. I highly doubt Fangio didn’t want him and we took him anyway. LOL

  44. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Another thing to remember is Mostert isn’t going to last much longer, 2 years maybe. Also, Tyreek said he was going to retire 2025.

If y’all don’t remember, Tyreek like Achane was a RB in college (Oklahooma State then West Alabama). Then just played WR when he got to KC.

Some draft picks are made with the salary cap in mind, and we have a huge cap number next year, looking at Xs cap numbers he isn’t going anywhere soon

Just trying to get in their heads to figure out why you take a CB at 51

I’m speechless, unless they just love Cam

    • Fangio likes to play a lot of shell coverage and then mix into man to confuse the offense. Cam Smith is also not afraid of contact. I think we’re going to use Ramsey as a rover – CB, S and LB depending on the play. Just like you can never have enough pass rushers, you can never have enough corners. It’s not that surprising to me.

  52. Ken's avatar Ken says:

    Davis Allen CLEMSON
    Zack Kuntz OLD DOMINION
    Will Mallory MIAMI

I agree with the Grier meme….”Who needs fucking draft picks?” Lol…

  64. Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

    Of course…lol

“General manager Chris Grier and head coach Mike McDaniel both insist the Dolphins will take the best players available rather than draft for need.”

According to whom? at 199 or whatever…lol…the perfect science.

  65. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I think the reason they took Cam Smith is because despite not having blazing speed, he’s always around the ball, and has great instincts. He knows what he sees and reacts to it. Achane will be a part time weapon, add that to our offense which already has an army of home run hitters. He’ll also be a return guy, which is important, especially if he’s better than average.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Since we’ll be playing mostly zone coverage, he (Cam Smith) won’t have to worry about staying with his guy exclusively (one of his weaknesses), but will be able to react and play the ball.

    • Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

Again, I don’t get the justification of BPA.

  66. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

The Steelers are having a very nice draft . . .

  67. Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

    Sorry, not sorry ranting….lol.

Let’s make sure we have quality depth, pick someone we need maybe in a year or two, and ignore holes and weaknesses we have now. Perfect draft philosophy…oh my.

    • Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

Isn’t that how we ended up with Iggy? Prime example of failure of this philosophy imo. And, literally there are thousands of examples like this…lol.

  68. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

    Cam Smith ran a 4.43.
    That’s fast.

  69. Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

At a minimum we needed a starting OL, imo. Biggest fucking hole on the team…lol

    • Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

I’m sure protecting the QB is not high on management’s list…that’s why we’re drafting a QB as BPA today…lol.

  70. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Smith is described a having the dawg.
He’s tenacious and feisty and a slashing tackler with room to add muscle at almost 6 ft 1.

  71. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

His strength is watching the QB while keeping the play in front of him then jumping the route. He led the country in PBU in 2021, so teams quit throwing toward him.
He also had 6 picks in college.

  72. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Fuck the 49ers. Taking my kicker in the third round you fuckers. !!

  73. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

This draft wasn’t likely to tip the scales for us no matter what, but not sure what kind of impact our CB makes. I can understand he will be needed next year, but at this point we’re all in this season, so you might as well get someone in RD 2 that will make an impact this season.

  74. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

  76. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

    51. Miami Dolphins: Cam Smith, CB, South Carolina

    Grade: A

The Dolphins have Jalen Ramsey joining Xavien Howard at corner, so from that perspective, it’s an interesting depth move for their initial pick. But in terms of the player, Smith is a great value here because he’s another big, physical, aggressive corner in this class who should have gone much earlier.

  77. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

    84. Miami Dolphins: Devon Achane, RB, Texas A&M

    Grade: A

The Dolphins can’t rely on Raheem Mostert and Jeff Wilson Jr. staying healthy. Achane has great upside as a dynamic change-of-pace back who can excel as a compact runner in their zone-blocking scheme.

  78. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

So rather than repost everything I’m reading,
here is the short version of how we plan to use cam Smith.

    He has position flexibility,
which we knew both the FO and McDaniel and especially Fangio love.

So does Ramsey, but not Howard.
So now Ramsey can become a safety or even ILB and let Smith move outside after lining up as if he’s the slot corner.
or vice versa, Smith can switch from boundary to slot pre-snap after showing the other.
    Fangio loves to do this.
and both Ramsey and Smith are slashing tacklers in the open field.

  79. Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

I doubt Achane will be on the field in pass protect….change of pace? I don’t get it. When Mostert and/or Wilson are injured, he’s our guy?

  80. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Kohou and Needham did do this, but they are UDFAs,
    (over achievers)
and Smith was slated to go in Round 1 but fell due to a non lingering injury
and ppl sleeping on him after teams kept away from him in 2022.

He was the highest rated CB in college in 2021
    against SEC competition.
This is not a guy having to move up a level.
He’s been covering the best his whole career.

  86. Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

While the Aggies proved to be a disappointment, Achane was one of the lone bright spots. The Texas native caught the attention of NFL teams throughout his junior season, securing an NFL Combine invite and he is viewed as one of the best running back prospects in the 2023 draft.

I think you nailed it Tim

  90. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Achane profiles as a complementary piece to a backfield committee. In his first NFL season, Achane could play a slightly similar role to the one Tony Pollard served during the 2021 season (169 touches, 1,065 scrimmage yards).

While he’ll likely receive closer to 100 touches, Achane’s abilities would still allow for him to be very successful and 1,000 scrimmage yards is at least possible depending on where he lands.

We’re not going to make any stylistic or NFL player comparisons to Achane, he’s unique enough of a prospect where there is no perfect comp. However, it’s easy to see him blossoming into a role where he receives 150-200 touches per season and he can be an explosive returner. The NFL team that drafts Achane will have a very specific role for him and he should thrive in that spot.

  91. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

With the ball in his hands, he moves very well. Achane is capable of making split-second cuts to move out of a linebacker’s vision, slipping through arm tackles and then unleashing that track speed for an explosive play. Even at the next level, Achane is going to win most sprints down the sideline and there is enough juice in his game to sidestep a defender who is in pursuit.

  92. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Achane’s speed is evident on this 75-yard touchdown run against the North Carolina Tar Heels, but this scamper also shows some of the other things he does well. Even at 5-foot-8, Achane shows tremendous balance through contact. Reminiscent of Alvin Kamara in some ways, Achane is like a cat with his ability to remain on his feet

Unlike most running backs of his size, NFL coaches should feel more comfortable with Achane running between the tackles. He is a patient runner, willing to wait behind his blocks before turning on that initial burst and making it through a crease.

  93. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

We’ve got Jones and Needham coming off injuries and Howard wasn’t very good last year. Most of us project they’ll all be healthy and good this year, but maybe the FO isn’t as sure as we are. Maybe they still saw CB as a need. Byron Jones was supposed to come back healthy last year and that didn’t turn out very well for us.

As for RB, our 1 and 1a are incredibly injury prone and Achane should be able to fit into that rotation immediately with less dropoff than Gaskin is.

Most people were excited about trading our picks away, the last two drafts are the down side of that schwartz, lol.

I don’t really get into evals predraft, so I’m not up in arms because we didn’t select any of my guys or one of the positions I determined we had to pick, lol, and by all account we got good value with both our picks, so I’ll take it.

All that being said, our FO is very hit or miss. With the exception of Skylar, not one of our picks last year had an impact. Hopefully we don’t see that again this year, and it would be nice if one or two guys from last year show on the field and prove to us that BPA is a viable philosophy, because if no one from your draft class is on the field in year 2, then what the heck are you doing?

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Initially, I had no problem with Achane, that’s a pick that should help us right now, both in the return game and maybe for some potentially explosive plays on offense here and there. I get what you’re saying about depth and injuries, but you could probably say the same thing about the O-line and TE.

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Like someone said last night, I’m not sure they are valuing a receiving TE in this offense the way it is currently constructed.

As for oline, I think (hope) they are still going to target some FA guy(s). We haven’t been very successful in picking olinemen in the draft even though we’ve gone there year after year. Hopefully we can still adresss it.

Dude is a ball player, watching his game tape he plays a lot of press man, but just has this awareness about himself, that screams Jalen Ramsey like

He’s not Ramsey, he is a very good corner

The 2 games I just watched, can’t remember him giving up any catches, and had an int vs Clemson

His run support is very good for a 6′ 188lb CB, he’s not afraid to put his nose in there

What I look for in a defender is can you do your immediate job, check, then how is your awareness and pursuit, discount double check

    another big hole,
but his speed ruins tackling angles,
so the holes don’t have time to close.

Going back to what I just cut and pasted from Tim, if you want Ramsey to play all over the place you need someone you can trust in Ramsey’s outside spot, I think Cam can do that, once he gets adjusted to the NFL, think kohou can do it too
