The case for passing on Cook

If/when Minnesota Vikings RB gets released, the Dolphins should just sit back and read about while drinking their morning coffee, as if it’s just another news story, a story they’re not particularly interested in. Cook is a nice player, but he will be asking for money we don’t have, and frankly, I think the guy we drafted in RD 3, De’Von Achane can provide the playmaking ability Cook would bring. It’s not that Cook isn’t a very good player, he is, but RB isn’t our problem. Mostert, Wilson and Acahane can give you the production that Cook can give you. We’d have to overpay to get Cook, some team who really needs him will do that. It happens every year. I feel that Cook is more duplication, although at a higher level, but Cook is also 28, so you overpay for a 28 year old running back? No thanks!

Raheem Mostert actually averaged more yards per carry (4.9 – 4.4) than Dalvin Cook last season. Over their careers, the disparity is greater in favor of Mostert. Cook is not a grinder, a guy that wears down opposing defenses, he’s a similar type runner to what we have. I know we’re close, but we need cap room to sign our own players like DE’s Christian Wilkins and Zach Sieler. Cook is a luxury we cannot afford. We need to also get more from our draft picks. We barely used our first pick last season, LB Channing Tindall. We spent a 3rd RD pick, once again our 1st pick in the draft, on RB De’Von Achane, and RB is the easiest position to transition to the NFL from college football. This kid is going to be electric, and he will keep both Mostert and Wilson fresh. RB by committee is the NFL way now, so few teams rely on one stud back, and the ones that do usually end up losing them for a spell and then need to change their offensive scheme to be competitive.

Our offense is all about our playmakers on the outside, Tyreek Hill, Jaylen Waddle, and then contributions with whomever makes the roster cuts, Berrios, Wilson, Anderson and Ezukanma. We added a lot of blocking at the TE position, gone is the finesse TE Mike Gesicki, and TE’s Durham Smythe, Eric Saubert, and Naples fave Tyler Kroft are here to block. Not a one of them is a dangerous receiving threat, and Head Coach Mike McDaniel vowed to run the ball more, and we will, but between Mostert, Wilson and A-Chain, you won’t miss Dalvin Cook. Who knows, maybe either Tanner Conner of 6th RD draft pick Elijah Higgins will be the receiving terror similar to what George Kittle provided for McDaniel’s offense with the SF 49ers.

Worst case is he produces this year, because of all the WRs he’s the worst after the catch and his hands seem to be suspect

I think that’s why Sherfield wasn’t re-signed too, dead weight after the catch

You mean Sherfield, who took it to the house on a 75 yard slant? I disagree, we was good after the catch. You can’t put the other receivers up against Hill and Waddle in the YAC category because they are two of the best in the league.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

He took one wide open pass, beat an LB and took it to the house

      Even a blind squirrel

But he’s JAG, that could block very well for a WR and was good at contested catches

He was good for us last year, much better than Wilson

      • Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

Yes, that was my point. He turned into our #3 WR, and did a good job. Moving forward, I expect Berrios to take over the #3 spot when they run Waddle out wide . Hopefully Wilson can catch on, but last season was an unmitigated disaster for him .

Just saw the newswire that the Senate is reviewing the PGA-LIV alliance…lol…good imo.

The “alliance” is a sellout to 9-11 victims, human rights, and a slew of Saudi transgressions. It’s called sports washing…lol.

Not sure why we would ever be in bed with SA on any level, but it would be a nice coup for Trump….he loves getting in bed with skanks…lol.

  5. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

I think its a big ol screw to the guys who stuck by PGA and didn’t get the stupid bribery pay-days that the guys who jumped ship did. Those guys who were “just looking out for their families” made it possible, nay inevitable that the Soudis would take control of the PGA.

    • son of a son of a shula's avatar son of a son of a shula says:

The PGA lost too many big names and in the end caved because of it. If they lost a bunch of mid level guys to Liv it wouldn’t have been a blip on the radar.
The best players are playing in front of no one and the Tour is floundering without it’s best players.
That’s how I see it and be dammed if it doesn’t suit you they figured. It was all damage control.

      • Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

That’s pretty much it, Son. LIV golf was offering astronomical money just to have the players switch over and sign contracts with them, the top players getting over $100 million dollars . You had some of those mid level guys getting contracts probably worth more than they would get on the tour. There were rumors Tiger was offered close to $1 Billion. The people who should be pissed are the guys on the tour who turned down big money to stay loyal
        To the tour.

I don’t think ya can pin it all on Grief, IMO: shit happened (injuries), constant turnover with coaches (including OCs and DCs), never had a stud QB (prior to Tua), and our O-Line was never good during those times.

Yes, Grief bears some responsibility, but much of it was happenstance out of his control.

BTW, I actually love your nickname of Grief! It’s funny to me, and it reminds me of Carl Weathers’ character in “The Mandalorian”, LOL. πŸ™‚

We’re currently 31.7m under the 2024 cap, with roughly 25 guys in the top 51 counting 1m-900k, most (about 20) of which won’t make the 2023 53

Adding their cap back in gives us about 50m to sign 25 or so players

We really need to sign Wilkins before the season starts, have a feeling he’s going to blow up with sacks under Fangio, then cost us 25m per season

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Hard to believe Ogbah’s contract, with only 4m in dead money and almost 18m cap hit in 2024, is left alone

Toba – you’ll be rich! Think how much $$$ you’ll save not buying cigarettes

  26. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Toba, nothing really works, because you are not only addicted to the nicotine. You are addicted to the ability to change your mood instantly. The moment you take a puff it releases endorphins into your system and instantly you feel better.

My best advice is to get used to “want” and ignore it as much as possible. People gain a bunch of weight when they quit, not because they are replacing the habit but because they are “filling a want” Don’t replace the want. Learn to live with it and it becomes less.

Working out doesn’t really help with the want but it does take your mind off it temporarily. (and it’s good for you besides)

I cannot believe how much more stamina I have than I did 5 years ago when I finally quit “for good”. “For good” in quotes because addiction never really goes away. One “reason” of twisted logic can send you back to it even after years.

Just realize that it’s your mind telling you lies because it wants the ability to release endorphins on demand. It will rationalize why it is ok just to have this one. LIES

My wife has been going through this exact struggle for decades. You really nailed it with “You are addicted to the ability to change your mood instantly.”

    • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

I failed to quit every time before I got divorced. I tried 10 times at least, but one or the other would pick it back up and just like that we would be both smoking again. I had to sit down with the ex a few years ago to finalize some property division that had been agreed to but not completed in the divorce. (I had to pay off the deeds first 😦 ) and when we sat down she pulled out a cigarette, lit up and then offered me one. I ALMOST took it out of habit, but then told her I had quit just after we divorced. It upset her for some reason, I could see on her face. Ce la vie.

  27. manitobafinfan's avatar manitobafinfan says:

TOBA!! – – I WAS SHOCKED to find out about your cardiac situation!! Thank goodness you’ve decided to kick the smoking habit.

My father became a heavy smoker when he served in WW2. Eventually, after we moved to Florida in 1959, he came down with lung cancer. Fortunately one pof his two lungs was cancer free. He lived 20 more years after his cancerous lung was removed and died in his later 80’s after a very productive life.

The three remaining smokers in our family all quit shortly after dad’s lung surgery. And I never STARTED. Our extended family is now SMOKE FREE!!

I’ve seen many smokers die a horrible death from lung cancer. If my many years as an X-Ray Tech and CT SCAN Tech taught me ANYTHING, it was this; smoking is just about the worst thing you could do to yourself.

Been there! I didn’t have to…ahem…stop smoking cigarettes… so I didn’t have that issue. 3 stents for me. It literally started while shoveling snow, and I stopped to go in to watch a Vikings game. I’d felt like crap shoveling but figured I was just old and feeble. I went into my doctor’s office the next day…Monday morning…and told the front desk gal I had an issue the afternoon before and wondered if I should do something or have something checked. As soon as I said chest pains…I shit you not…like 6 nurses come pouring out of the back, rush me to a room and hook me up to about a dozen lines checking shit. Next thing I know I’m being told they’d already called the ambulance to take me to the ER. I said it happened yesterday, and I wasn’t going to the ER. One of the 4 nurses in the room leaves.
    ***
A guy in a suit comes in 3 minutes later and explains to me that if I choose not to go to the ER they would document my leaving as AMA, and I would be billed for everything they’d done to me up to that point because my insurance wouldn’t cover it. I said so you’re blackmailing me and all I can do is cooperate or get a bill for about $5000? He refused to comment.
    ***
I went to the ER where they inform me that I did indeed have a heart attack…no shit Sherlock…and they have no idea how I lived through it. One of my arteries was 90% occluded…one was 75% and another was 50%. They couldn’t get me in for a stress test for 3 months…and I couldn’t complete it…I went straight from my stress test to surgery. They wouldn’t let me leave the hospital. Fuckers.

Anyway, it was also kind of one of the best things that has ever happened to me. So, there’s that! πŸ€™

Whats on your summer BBQ menu this year?
    By James McKinney@ConchPhinsFan Jun 13, 2023, 8:00pm EDT

Now that summer is in full swing for everyone and the kids are at home making us crazy we pivot towards things like vacations and summer get-togethers. Whether those are get-togethers with friends, family, or neighbors many of those gatherings also include some outdoor cooking, grilling, or smoking or for short just good ole BBQ!

Most of you by now are aware that I grew up in S. Florida but also spent an extended period of my life in Texas before recently returning to live in the Gainesville Florida area. In Texas, BBQ consists of everything with a focus on beef, especially brisket. In Florida, and most of the South for that matter it’s more focused on pork with a little of everything else mixed in, including some seafood of course. As far as up north, I have no idea what they are doing up there.

So tonight’s question of the day is what are your go-to things that you like to grill or smoke outdoors? Do you have a β€œspecialty”? What about recipes? Do you have any foolproof ways of cooking this or that which you think trumps all the others that you would like to share? Do you have some recipes for sides that go with the things you cook on the grill/smoker that blow everyone away? What about secret brines, marinades, or sauces? Is it something in your technic that sets your recipe apart from the rest?

To be – be well, man. And everybody’s quitting experience is different but none are easy. I (and my wife) quit in 1996 after my Mom died. Put them down never had another. Took another 5-years before they flipped from smelling good when someone lit up to not being able to stand the smell on someone’s clothes. Then it just kind of mellowed out. A lot of it is personality traits…if you have an obsessive/collector personality, addiction seems to be harder to beat. Luckily I’ve never been that way. Had a motorcycle but couldn’t bring myself to be the guy who washed I and waxed it after every ride, like guns but don’t collect them, etc..

Manitoba, geez, that’s a scare! Glad to hear you’re on the road to recovery. I’m a reformed smoker as well. Quit lots of times, for long periods. I never was the type to want one first thing in the morning or whatever. I’d go days without. Drinking is what did it. I always said if I could quit drinking, I could quit smoking because that’s when it hit me. The last time I started was when my dad was hospitalized and the stress was off the charts. Somehow it was acceptable for me to go outside the hospital to have a smoke, but not to have a drink. I since have quit again and I don’t see it happening again. Be strong, you can do it.

I’ll add to the blog medical history-I’ve got 2 replacement parts, I’m not all original equipment. πŸ˜‚ I’ve had both hips replaced, 6 weeks apart, I was 51, almost 10 years ago. No clue what caused it, they said it just happens sometimes. πŸ€·πŸΌβ€β™€οΈ

THE ANGST AND VENOM TOWARDS TUA
    Posted by Ron Regenye | Jun 14, 2023 | Dolphins News | 0

Ever since the Miami Dolphins selected Tua Tagovailoa at #5 in the 2020 NFL draft, doubts, concerns, and even at times, perceived hatred towards him and the Miami Dolphins organization have taken place over the airwaves.

I remember teams lining up to β€œTank for Tua” before his devastating hip injury, predicting him to go #1 overall potentially. The Dolphins had a tough choice between Tua and Herbert. When the pick was announced, Dolphins fans around the world rejoiced. I can vividly remember yelling and getting a mass of text messages, calls, etc. NFL pundits seemed to immediately navigate to having Tua in their crosshairs.

Too injury prone, weak arm, small, suffered an injury that would take at least a year to recover from fully were at least some of what was spoken to. Honestly, it made a lot of us fans think about those things. Outside of his injury to his hip, I never truly had any concerns. Then everything changed from my perspective. I watched the mini-documentary with Tua and Trent Dilfer. Just seeing what type of person Tua was, what his family consists of, the work he puts in, the drive, the swagger, it dawned on me that we now, finally, after all these years have a quarterback that can lead us to where we all want to be.

  65. Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

His first two years were spent coming in and out of games, seemingly not trusted in β€˜big’ situations (I’m a huge fan of Fitzmagic, though). You could literally see the kid getting broken down almost weekly. Coaches did not seem to back him up; the NFL and all of their shows, commentators, and blogs were religiously taking shots at Tua and the team. In my view, he appears to be one of the kindest, wholehearted players I’ve seen come across the NFL, ever!

Enter Mike McDaniel. Everything just did a complete 180 from that initial phone call with Tua while on the plane flying into Miami. You could see in Tua’s eyes that he was different, felt different, and, most importantly, just happy to feel wanted. When a man or any person feels wanted and gets built up, the world can be their oyster. When he was healthy, the Miami offense seemed unstoppable and finally had the potential to make the playoffs and be a contender. Of course, having the cheetah and the penguin doesn’t hurt!

Injuries cut through that potential, and a playoff game vs. Buffalo was very much in hand until the end, losing by only 3. Yet, after that, very few people still changed their views on Tua outside of Sam Acho and Dan Orlovsky. They are still saying he is injury prone and can’t play a whole season; they are saying he is too small. From my limited experience with this directly (like most of us), when a quarterback can get slammed on his head on turf, not many have the ability to shake that off simply.

  66. Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

Enter the 2023 off-season. Initial mini-camp photos seen across the web showed a different-looking Tua. Tree trunks for legs, thicker upper body, not to mention a badass tattoo that we’ve only gotten a glimpse of. A different swagger also seems consistent with how he just handles himself.

With the newfound confidence of β€˜learning’ to fall with the ongoing jiu-jitsu lessons, it all seems to be coming together for this kid. Going into year two in this offense, Tua, with the weapons this team has and the potential to add more (Cook, offensive line, etc.), just screams that this team is a team to be reckoned with.

The rest of the NFL still doesn’t view this team or his health as sustainable, but as strong-willed as this kid is, he will show the skeptics and prove the negatives that surround him, and this team is Ill witted. As a lifelong Dolphin fan for close to 40 years, this team has the potential not to have my wife and kids stay away from me while watching the games in 2023.

Fournette High on Dolphins; Baker’s Message
Linebacker Jerome Baker sends message to Dolphins fans
    ALAIN POUPART1 HOUR AGO

There’s a lot of attention these days being paid to running back Dalvin Cook, now a free agent after being released by the Minnesota Vikings.

Another veteran running back looking for a new team is former Jacksonville Jaguars first-round pick Leonard Fournette, and he was a guest on “Good Morning Football” on Wednesday and it maybe not that much of a stretch to suggest he wouldn’t mind joining the Miami Dolphins if it turned out there was mutual interest.

  71. Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

There are dots to connect here, starting with the fact that Fournette’s two NFL teams have been the other two in Florida, the Jaguars and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Then there’s his relationship with cornerback Jalen Ramsey from their time together in Jacksonville.

And then there’s the fact he’s obviously impressed by the talent that Miami has assembled, which came out when he was asked which team around the NFL had the best roster.

  72. Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

“So I’ll be rolling with the Miami Dolphins,” Fournette said. “For me, bringing a guy like Jalen over there, his attitude. I played with him in Jacksonville, played against him when he played with the Rams, I know what he brings to the table. And with Tyreek (Hill), Jalen, the young guys they have, they’re gonna do a tremendous job and the defense is not bad. And I can’t wait to see what Jalen brings, and I’m very excited for him. A new home, a new place for him, it’s gonna be very exciting for him.

“If Tua stays healthy, they can make a good run.”

  73. Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

Ramsey and Fournette played together with Jacksonville in 2017 and 2018 and at the start of 2019 before Ramsey was traded to the Rams, and they helped the Jaguars reach the AFC Championship Game in 2017, losing against the New England Patriots (a team that included GMFB co-host and former Dolphins DB Jason McCourty).

“When I first got drafted, he DM’d me, he said, ‘Man, listen, I know you’re on the same missio,’ ” Fournette said. “I’m trying to win a championship. I want to go to the Super Bowl. We fell short to the wonderful Patriots. But overall just playing with him, you know? His children are like my kids, man. He’s been my brother since I first entered the league. And he’s a wonderful guy. I’m happy to see how he’s flourishing right now. He’s a man of God. I love that about him. And it’s my guy.”

  74. Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

Not sure why a big back like Fournette wouldn’t fit our system. He’s a complete back with power, blocking, and receiving…lol…wtf

  75. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

PFF grades for top performers in the league:

EDGE Phillips 14 (improved pass rush grade from 60 to 90)
OG Hunt 17 (improving every year)
OT Armstead 17 (downgraded due to injuries) (8 straight years over grade of 80)
QB Tua 11 (due to picks, led league in “massive 8.9 yds/throw”)
WR Hill 3 Waddle 17 (downgraded due to drops and a fumble)
CB Ramsey 2 Howard 17 (gave up 6 TDs and 800 yds, but had 12 breakups)
    C Williams 8 (highest ever)
    DL Wilkins 8 Sieler 25 (but 79 and 77 in run stopping — 4th and 6th)
ILB Long 14 (89 vs rub) Baker 28 (88 pass rush grade)
    S Holland 10
    TE —
    RB —

The article said Hill, Holland, and Ramsey could be #1 graded in 2023.
And Phillips is winning just on physical gifts.
If he learned some moves, he could be top 10.

  76. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

I think we have a loaded roster with stars studded throughout the lineup.

At the Marquee spots of WR and CB, we possibly have TWO top 3 tandems.
At the QB on offense and defense (Holland), we have guys who might be #1-ish.
In the middle of the line on both sides of the LOS, we have serious talent.

We have 7 guys (at least) on offense with verified track star speed.

And our top 2 EDGE rushers are 275 pound beasts, not slender and light.

of the coaching staff McDaniel has put together.

Besides the obvious top 5 DC,
there’s a known QB guru in Darrell Bevell.
Eric Studesville is a highly respected RB coach.
The TE coach built a top 3 TE out of 5th rounder George Kittle.
Wes Welker as a WR coach and Sam Madison as a DB coach? Niiiiice.

Dolphins pass game coordinator Renaldo Hill reveals Vic Fangio’s edge against opposing offenses
Vic Fangio brings 24 years of NFL coaching experience to the Miami Dolphins.

The Miami Dolphins announced Vic Fangio as the team’s defensive coordinator in the middle of April. The former coach of the Denver Broncos brings 24 years of NFL coaching experience to South Florida β€” along with some hefty expectations.

Fangio’s defensive prowess is well-established, as his teams have consistently ranked in the top 10 in points and yardage allowed. In 2018, as the defensive coordinator for the Chicago Bears, he built a unit ranked first in points allowed and first in rush yards allowed.
