2023 Preseason Game 2 – Dolphins @ Texans

It appears as if the Dolphins avoided a major disaster, losing LT Terron Armstead for an extended period of time after getting injured in practice, his first snap actually. Armstead left the field barely putting on any weight on the leg that was injured, but he says he’ll be ready for game #1, and there is no major injury requiring surgery. Now that we got that out of the way, there are a few things I want to see in preseason. Most importantly, NO MORE INJURIES!!! I would like to see CB Cam Smith continue to get important reps and show he’s serious about getting plenty of reps in the regular season. Backup QB’s Mike White and Skylar Thompson just have to do better. We know neither of them are going to run this offense as crisply and effectively as Tua, but we need them to be competent enough to put points on the board. I’m really hoping we see better play from both of these guys.

I would really like to see RB Chris Brooks get more carries, and see if we may possibly have something there. He’s not the prototype “big back” like Tennessee’s Derrick Henry, but compared to the stable of RB’s we have here in Miami, Brooks looks huge! I feel like all our RB’s are so close in running style and especially stature, that it would be nice to have a big back like Brooks make the team. Brooks is 6′ 223, while the lot of Mostert (5’10 205), Wilson (6′ 210), Ahmed (5’11 197), Gaskin (5’10 199) and Achane (5’9 188) are all very similar size wise. Yes, we have FB Alec Ingold who’s a load at 6’1 240, but Ingold has only 21 carries in 4 years in the NFL for a reason. Of course, the 4 best guys will make the team, this much I get, but I hope Brooks shows enough to be viewed as a possibilty to make the roster.

I’m curious to see more of LG Lester Cotton. He was great in practice, he had some very dominant reps, so I would love to see that dominance in game play, even if it’s a preseason game. It doesn’t matter what round you were drafted in on the O-line, if you can move people, you’re going to get noticed. Would I love Liam Eichenberg to play like the guy we hoped he could be when we moved up in the 2nd RD of the 2021 NFL at pick #42 to get him, of course, but at this point, I just want someone competent, and hungry for the job. If it’s Lester Cotton, who is actually 3rd string at RG, or Isaiah Wynn who is a veteran as well, I don’t care as long as they play well.

The competition at DT is pretty intense with DT’s Brandon Pili and Jaylen Twyman, Most importantly though, we need to get through the negotiations and sign DT/DE Christian Wilkins to a long term deal and keep him in Miami for another 6 years. He’s been an exemplary player, hard worker who brings it every week. Once Wilkins is signed the next up should be DT/DE Zach Sieler. There are some good battles at LB as well, with guys like Mitchell Agude, Mike Rose, and Aubrey Miller. It’s no given that last year’s 2nd RD pick LB Channing Tindall is a lock to make the roster, how these guys play on special teams could be the key to making the 53. BTW, the pronounced demise of the Mac was a bit premature. It’s slow, and uncooperative at times, and I do need to get a new one, but this article was written on the Mac, so LONG LIVE THE MAC!

Alright, here’s the game plan on Offense for the 2nd half: target Ced Wilson 100x if necessary, get him over 200 yards receiving and 4 TDs, then we can trade him to the Colts for Johnathan Taylor to get a deal done.

That would clear nearly $7M off our current salary cap, the Colts really need another WR, and they’re nearly $17M under the cap (7th best in the NFL right now).

Bri – I think Taylor is a very good back, i remember thinking Marlon Mack was really good at one time as well. Unless he falls into our laps for a price we can’t refuse, I don’t think we should go all out in pursuit to get him

    • Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

I don’t think we will give up a first, and probably not even a second for him. He’s probably a top five back in this league. If we can get him for a third and a player or two, I would probably do it if we feel we can re-sign our upcoming FA’s

SAW NOTHING of tonight’s Dolphin game locally. Hope to see the replay tomorrow at 10:00 AM on the NFL Network. Local Tampa area sports talk shows seem to be completely ignoring the Dolphin franchise.

Bri – it’s not just what we have to give up to get him here, it’s what we have to pay him. I can’t see hiw we give him a contract and still keep Wilkins and Sieler. It’s going to be hard enough without paying Taylor. Go with the kid Brooks and Mostert and Achane and Ahmed and we’ll be fine

  23. Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

    Mike,

Yes about paying him, that’s why I said if we can re-sign our upcoming FA’s, Wilkins in particular. Listen, I love some of the other guys too, but are you going to forgo a chance at signing Taylor for Zach Seiler? No way. Taylor can be a game changer, some of our other FA’s are good rotational players and depth pieces. The Dolphins clearly don’t have an issue paying him, or they wouldn’t even engage in talks. We can say “we don’t need a feature back in this system” all we want, but this is Shanahan’s system, and he went out and traded for CMC last year.

    • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

4 year lunch pail grinder who outplayed his contact for years for our team and is a key piece or the disgruntled me first player who will bitch and moan when he doesn’t get enough carries….

      I’ve already said my peace.

      • Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

If you are referring to Taylor, you can’t blame these young running backs for trying to get their big contracts while they’re young. The NFL is not set up to pay running backs, big money anymore, and he sees this as his best opportunity to get paid.

      • Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

If you are referring to Sieler, believe me, I love the guy too. He’s exactly what you want on your team. But there is also a chance that someone out bids us in free agency for him. Ideally, you want to keep everyone, but this is a business and you can’t keep everyone on your team. I want the most talented players possible on this team, and if we can get Taylor, then I would welcome the opportunity to do so. I think we will be OK with who we have, but there’s no question that Taylor is far better than any running back we currently have on our roster .

60 catches for a Big Back is really good,

The 2 situations have nothing to do with each other

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Wilkins is under contract – I think he was just angling for a long term deal before hand

It seems like that’s increasingly more difficult and it kind of seems like both Wilkins and the Dolphins have come to terms with the fact that he will be playing this year on the 5th year of his contract

With that in mind, if it’s true, they know exactly how much they have to spend on Taylor who may be signing a 1 year deal

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

If Wilkins had come to terms it would’ve lowered his 2023 cap

Watched the first drive for the Jags, and Jaelan Phillips was completely neutralized. I know it’s just preseason, but I’m not sold that he’s going to be a dominant player. I hop he is, I just think he’s always going to be a guy that looks like greatness but plays ok

    • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

      Chubb too

I’m hoping they don’t want anything on tape, so they just told the pass rush to just push straight ahead one on one.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

The rest of the offense will be so much better than what he was playing with, but Skylar still has to play better, and the same goes for White when he’s healthy

  43. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

On the other hand d, considering it’s only preseason, I really like what I saw from Chris Brooks

  44. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

I think Skylar was playing against 3rd stringers mostly the whole last preseason.
I think Teddy got the reps against the backups.

This year in preseason games 2 and 3, Skylar was going against guys who will make their teams for his first half reps.

And in preseason game 1, Skylar was throwing to guys who will not make our team with blockers who will not make the 53 and 2 rookie TEs.

Plus he threw 3 TDs in preseason game 2.

  45. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

I keep making myself remember that Jax last year had a team that got better as the year went on and won a playoff game.

    We didn’t.

  46. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

You can’t underestimate the talent of Trevor Lawrence.
In 2019 he beat Alabama with Tua 44-16 for the national championship.
    He threw 3 TDs.
Etienne scored 3 times in that one as well.
    Tua threw 2 TDs.

and Jax has a SB winning HC who was a NFL QB.

  47. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Do you think McDaniel decided to keep TE Elijah Higgins under wraps after he did so well that first preseason game? He’s hardly gotten any reps since then.

PS I like the play of that rookie TE Hill, but he can easily be stashed on the PS.

If Higgins had kept playing like that, there’s no way he could be hidden on the PS, if that is what needs to happen.

  50. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

The rumor is they offered a 2nd round pick and then other combinations of picks and players but were rebuffed. So I am guessing I am not going to like what happens

  51. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

So we locked up Sieler for a few years but not Wilkins yet. I felt a few days ago that Wilkins agent is looking for top end money for DT but the team doesn’t want to go that high. Wilkins is a really good player but he’s not elite especially as a pass rusher. He’s never even made the pro bowl.

  52. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Barry Jackson has been reporting that the Dolphins did make an offer for Taylor and apparently the Colts have until Tuesday to accept

Not sure I understand what’s with the Tuesday deadline
    I know that’s cut day

So maybe the idea is the trade, if any, has to be by Tuesday as far as the GMs are concerned – just so they can finalize the 53 efficiently

But seems to me like a trade can happen anytime before the trade deadline in October

Would be nice to know by Tuesday though

  59. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

We’ll probably be looking to poach other teams as well at positions we’d like to get deeper at.
