The Dolphins finally kick off the season at Hard Rock Stadium after 2 road games to start the season. 2 impressive ones, one in LA against the Chargers, a 36-34 shootout victory, and then a more methodical 24-17 against our division rival New England Patriots. Even after the 2 victories, I still feel like we haven’t seen the defense thrive like I expected it to. We were gashed for over 200 yards on the ground in LA against the Chargers as well as giving up 34 points. In Foxborough, we surrendered half the points, but the defense has not looked dominant in any way, shape or form. They have made plays to seal games, and I suppose that’s the important thing, and at 2-0, I’m not going to complain too much, but I’d love to see this defense become what I hoped it could be.
If I told you before the season that LT Terron Armstead was going to miss the first 2 games, and that the Dolphins offensive line would have only allowed 1 sack in those 2 games, would you believe me? This may be the biggest surprise so far. The offensive line has done their job, with the exception of the bad snap issues that have plagued center Connor Williams. The shame of it is Williams is an excellent blocker, but it’s only a matter of time where a bad snap hurts us. Our run game has been excellent, when we actually run the ball like we did against the Patriots. Mostert bulked up some 15 lbs and he looks great this season. Mostert has 158 yards on 28 carries for a very nice 5.6 YPC, and he already has 3 rushing TD’s. RB Salvon Ahmed has been serving as 2nd string, but he’s now dealing with a groin injury, so De’Von Achane will now be the 2nd string RB as he has recovered from his shoulder injury. I’m excited to Achane, although props to Ahmed for simply making it impossible to not see that he makes plays and although he’s not physically imposing like Chris Brooks or super fast like Mostert or Achane, he gets the job done and looks slippery and elusive so far.
At WR, it’s been a lot Tyreek, especially in game 1, but as I told you, and you probably already knew it anyway, Belichick was going to do everything he could muster to keep Tyreek Hill from beating them. Tyreek still caught a TD but was much quieter compared to his 215 yard explosion against the Chargers. WR Jaylen Waddle looks like he will miss this game as he’s still in concussion protocol. Not sure which WR will replace Waddle if he can’t go, but Erik Ezukanma has been primarily used as a rusher in a somewhat similar role to WR Deebo Samuel. He’s not the type of guy that will be a downfield threat, and either is River Cracraft or Braxton Berrios. Jaylen Waddle makes it easier for the aforementioned Berrios and Cracraft to work underneath the coverage because Waddle requires attention and protection deep, so it will be interesting to see how we handle this if Waddle can’t go Sunday.
How about a huge high five and major props to LB Andrew Van Ginkel. This guy never quit, never gave up, and has carved himself a role on this defense. It’s clear Vic Fangio regards AVG very highly as he took tons of snaps in game 1 playing as the nickel LB and an inside LB, garnering a shocking 75% of snaps on defense. Jaelan Phillips did get in a limited practice yesterday, so he’s trending in the right direction as he deals with a back injury sustained in practice last Friday. More props coming, I feel like Raekwon Davis has been much more active and visible in the first 2 games. I do have concerns, although after 2 games, there’s not necessarily enough data to feel like this is a trend, but the 2 safeties, Jevon Holland and DeShon Elliott have the most tackles, 25 and 17 respectively, followed by 2 more DB’s, Xavien Howard and Kader Kohou. That’s not necessarily sustainable. Ok, let me get this out, I’m tired of seeing Eli Apple allowing receptions to anyone and everyone. If we’re going to draft a guy in the 2nd RD (CB Cam Smith), get the guy ready to play, because it’s so frustrating to watch. We jettisoned a former 2020 1st RD pick, Noah Igbinoghene and traded him for a former 2021 2nd RD pick (CB Kelvin Joseph), so please can we get either or both of those guys in there???
The 0-2 Denver Broncos make a late September visit to Hard Rock, and the heat could definitely be a factor in our favor. Sunday’s temperature should be about 85-88 degrees with a chance of thunderstorms (imagine that, a thunderstorm in FLA). While the Broncos are 0-2, they have lost both games by a total of 3 points, losing 17-16 to the Raiders and 35-33 against the Commanders, both at home. QB Russell Wilson has bounced back nicely from last year’s dreadful season. He has 5 TD’s to 1 INT, and has completed 68% of his passes in Sean Payton’s offense. RB Javonte Williams is back and Samaje Perrine is his backup. TE Greg Dulcich who was expected to have somewhat of a breakout season has been injured so TE Adam Trautman has taken his place while he’s out, but is not on the injury report this week, so he’ll be back. WR’s Courtland Sutton and Jerry Jeudy are a talented WR duo. The Broncos defense struggled last week surrendering 35 points to the Washington Commanders. We all know Javonte Williams is hard running back, so we have to contain him, and Russell Wilson has been thriving early on, we have to take him down and make him uncomfortable. Rookie WR Marvin Mims has flashed and last year’s UDFA receiver Brandon Johnson has also made a splash.
At home, in September, this is a game the Dolphins should win. If the heat is a factor and the thunderstorms don’t quench the heat, we need to win this game, our first home game of the season. On the flip side, the Broncos come in a desperate team after losing 2 very close games to start the season. Waddle being out isn’t a good thing. Once again, that will be something to watch as to who replaces Waddle, and if he makes an impact. We may opt to run the ball more, and I’ve yet to mention FB Alec Ingold, who has been a feisty player and brings some nasty, some meanness to our offense, which definitely is welcomed. As I mentioned, De’Von Achane who is healthy may get more touches and I would like to see us continue to give Raheem Mostert a bunch of carries, at least 15-20. Achane can get touches both in the run game and passing game, and I hope he gets a few targets so he can find some room to run. He can be a HR threat with the ball in his hands anywhere on the field. Let’s hope this is Armstead’s debut, although Kendall Lamm has earned some trust for sure. Let’s also hope we do rest Waddle and have him healthy next week, it’s a long season. I also hope Jaelan Phillips is healthy enough to make a splash this week as well.
GO DOLPHINS!!!

From the last blog, regarding pressures:
They’re meaningless because, good QB’s make throws under pressure. If you’re not sacking the QB, you are failing.
WRONG
What do you guys mean pressures are a meaningless stat!? That opinion is not well thought out. You don’t think rushing the QB affects his ability to pass? To allow routes to develop? Of course pressures are important. They can be more important than sacks. ( a two yard loss on 2nd down isn’t that tough to overcome, but a rushed throw that is picked off is the end for the series. A rushed throw that is only dropped is almost as good as the sack for 2-4 yards, still loss of down.)
You guys are crazy or just spouting BS to try to make your point.
I can tell for a fact that pressures are not nearly as important as sacks!!! You don’t see guys in the HOF that had 185 pressures and 30 sacks as pass rushers, so yeah, that’s what I’m getting at.
and you will be wrong because it is NOT a fact.
Then prove it. Show us the stats where pressures affected the outcome of the game. “Pressures” is just another meaningless moneyball stat made up to give the talking heads something to talk about. It’s an “almost” stat. “I almost got to him.” “I almost picked the right lotto numbers.”
it’s a I forced him to make a mistake stat. Not an “almost” stat. They didn’t “almost” pressure the QB they pressured him.
And first
Ok Rocko, name one player in the HOF who lead the NFL in pressures but never was a sack leader, even on his own team?
OK Mike, how many folks are in the HOF from before 1982 when sacks became a stat?
First and 10 Sack for 3 yard loss – 2nd and 13
First and 10 pressure – incomplete pass 2nd and 10
First and 10 pressure – Interception Series over
The last choice is way more important to the outcome that the first. Mic drop
Mike Did you get my text?
Yessir, thanks bud! 🙂
WOOOO HOOOOOO!!! OUT OF PROTOCOL
He WILL Play
Awesome!!!
Rock – Pressures count, but the play is over with a sack, it can still happen with a pressure. QB’s make plays under pressure all the time but they can’t make the play when they’re sacked. That’s a huge difference. It’s one that simply can’t be overlooked. There is no finality with a pressure.
I’m with Rock on this. It’s almost as if some of the commentary here goes against fundamental football. The first order of business for the guys up front is to get the QB off his spot and make him uncomfortable. Sacks are a big deal no doubt, but it’s not just about that. The same with INTs vs. good coverage and incomplete passes.
Look at how many sacks and INTs guys get in a season, 20 and 10 are monster numbers over the course of a season. That’s within like 500 plays or more.
Exactly
You can’t intercept the ball after a sack…lol
Pressures cause turnovers and overall problems for the QB
I think good coverage and INT’s are very different from pressures and sacks. If you maintain your coverage and don’t allow a completion, you win. If you get a pressure but don’t get the sack, you can still lose because the QB can still make a play.
The QB could also go to the guy who isn’t covered. That’s the game. Getting 4 team sacks in a game is considered pretty good. That’s usually against 30 plus pass attempts.
Why do you think guys celebrate sacks and turnovers so much, they’re not easy to get.
Rock – I’ve seen Phillip’s whiz by QB’s trying to grasp them but pushed past the QB and out of the play. He may get a pressure on that, but to me it doesn’t count for shit, because the QB still had a chance to make a play, even if he was hurried. It’s kind of like getting the first hit on a RB, you slow him down for a second, don’t make the tackle, and then he goes for 50 yards for a TD. Does anyone care you made contact with the RB? Hell no!
Good analogy
Guys it’s not like Phillips doesn’t get sacks. He has 15
sacks in 2 years. He just hadn’t hit the magical number 10 yet in a season
Every great pass rusher who has a lot of sacks also has a lot of pressures
It’s pretty significant that we have a guy at the top of pressures
Pressures matter. They are completely disruptive to an offense
One very important distinction, every great pass rusher has a lot of sacks. End of story!
Piggy – I use Phillips as my example because of all the hype he got before the season, that he was going to break out. I want to see it. I don’t want excuses that he gets pressures.
He got a sack week 1 and ended the game
He had pressures in the only game he’s played so far, 2 QB hits and a .5 sack that sealed the game. He also had 11 tackles in that game.
Ken, 1/2 a sack. Regardless, that was a huge play, and it was a SACK, not a pressure. 🙂
Sack on first down ends the down. Pressure on first down that leads to a mistake ends the series.
Can I make a big point please? You’re making the assumption that the pressure led to a mistake. It could also have led to a TD. Show me evidence of all these pressures we get leading to mistakes. It’s such a hypothetical thing really. I can tell you for sure that unless the QB fumbled on a sack and someone on the offense recovered it and made a big play like Tyreek Hill once did (That wasn’t actually a sack though), the play is over. You can get a pressure, the QB steps up and throws a TD. That never happens when you sack the QB
I came here to argue and chew bubble gum. I am all out of bubble gum. 😉
Nice write Mike E! Keep up the good work!
Thanks bud!

Great stuff Wyo! I love listening to Harlan, one of the best in my eyes.
————–
Absolutely! He sounds a lot like Marv Albert, who I dearly loved calling games. And his enthusiasm is right up there with our guy Gus Johnson. Definitely one of the best in the game today.
Pressure is one of the most important stats a defense can have. Yes of course the sack is better but with pressure comes incompletions, interceptions and confusion and discomfort by the QB. When the Giants beat the Patriots in both SBs I think they sacked Brady 4 times in each game. A respectable number but what was even better is they were in Brady’s face every time and he never got comfortable throwing the ball
OK, but if they just pressured Brady all game, and never actually sacked him, Brady would have been a lot more comfortable. Brady hates getting sacked, he’s a different guy when you get to him, and 4 sacks in a game is a pretty good amount.
4 out of what 40 drop backs. That shows you how hard sacks are to get and how important and impactful just getting pressure can be
No, it shows you how important it is to actually get to the damn QB, and not just get pressure on him. Tell me, are you happy when Tua gets sacked 4 times in a game? 🤣
Pressure is important. We can all remember some years when our pass-rush was non-existent. The sacks will come in due time, and near-sacks (pressures) will yield INTs in many cases.
Thanks again, Mike E. No pressure, no sack….lol.
Nice write, Mike! We’re going to see a lot of tough games this season. Just find ways to win. That’s what good teams do.
Thanks Tim
LOL, well yeah, a sack is a successful pressure
Other pressures, well, you never know. Some could be passes thrown awY, some could be INT’s, and others could be TD’s

——————-
Did we win the game or lose? And I will tell you if I am happy or not 😉
Well, what if we win but Tua is carted off the field? I’ve never seen a QB carted off after a pressure. 😆
It has happened. You are allowed 1 step after he releases the ball
Pressures off the edge gets the QB off his spot and can result in a sack from the interior because he couldn’t step up. Most times it’s a group effort.
Jaelen Phillips gets to the QB (pressure or sack) quicker than anybody else in the entire NFL thus far this season… even Micah Parsons. Know what that means? He must be accounted for on every single snap he’s on the field… that’s a true game-changing presence.
He could have 200 pressures and 0 sacks, but he still changes the game for opposing Offenses. He’s gotta be either double-teamed or at least chipped by a RB.
Don’t worry, y’all… the sacks are coming!
Pressures are a participation 🏆. LOL
Ken – I know you better than that. If we won but Tua was sacked 4 times you’d be berating the offensive line endlessly and saying Tua is going to get killed if we continue to allow that to happen. Be honest Hulk, I know you boy!
I just read that Waddle is NOT out of protocol but is practicing. Now I am confused, because I SPECIFICALLY remember from last year that they COULD NOT practice while still in protocol. What gives?
All I know is that Waddle is wearing a red non-contact jersey today.
I remember as you do: NO PRACTICE if in protocol.
Maybe the rule got relaxed this year? I dunno.
My 2 cents-Pressures matter because you get in the QBs head. Rattle them. That can cause all kinds of issues. 🙂
Also thanks Mike. You keep this place going. 😁
You’re welcome Herd! The Fest is rapidly approaching!! It will be cool to finally meet you!
The Bears are having a good one
WOW!
Crime pays now days because the small penalties or lack there of in these big cities for this type of crime make is worth their risk in their eyes.
Phillips is gonna have 4 sacks on Shaun day just to spite Mike E and Phish!
You would think putting a Bears Logo on your stuff would keep people away
🥁
😆
Nice!
😂
Dolphins got Ryan Hayes back from Indy and signed him to our practice squad. Now we only lost one draft pick to poaching.
Piggy – wouldn’t 4 pressures be better? 🙃
I’ll take it
Chubb will get 4 sacks and Phillips just with the pressures

I’m going to say it now, I’m probably going to struggle with names. You and Ken, you use your names here so no problem, but everyone else is going to be a different story.
Also, let’s just get this out of the way. I do not have an accent. 😂
“West Virginia, mountain mama
Take me home, country roads”
Yeah right!🤣
I still call you Tim when I see you
What? No accent? 😉
LOL Is it just me or can you guys actually hear an accent while reading this?? LOL
Lies, damn lies, and statistics
“ In 2016, there were 219 interceptions thrown by 37 quarterbacks on 12,100 pass attempts from a clean pocket, a rate of 1.8%. Conversely, those same 37 quarterbacks combined to throw 153 interceptions on 4,942 attempts when pressure was faced, a rate of 3.1%.”
Woo hoo…a 1.3% bump. Here’s the other side from last year – “Since 2020, Wilson has thrown for 23 touchdowns under pressure per PFF, which is second only to Josh Allen of the Buffalo Bills and his 25 scores during the same time.”
58% increase seems pretty substantial to me!
site still sucks
Might be something in your settings.

I read on SI that in the later stages of protocol you an practice (no contact) to see if there are any negative effects before being fully cleared. I had not read that during all the drama last season as they were changing rules on the fly.
**you CAN practice
Got ya bud… and thanks! I didn’t know that.
More Phillips music
It’s FRIDAY!!! RIP, baby girl Aaliyah… and fuck you, R. Kelly.
That’s a big loss for the Broncos.
Great song and album. Great pick for our home opener.🙂
34-17 Phins.
Hoping Cam Smith and Achane get more opportunities.
I’m thinking one sided bitch slap too but nervous saying a score out loud and cursing it. But we’re going to score a lot, like a lot
Was out of the country and finally got to watch both games. Really bummed to not have watched the Chargers game live. I expect the defense to improve as the season goes on. Chemistry and familiarity with the new system. The good DCs pick up tendencies and scheme to stop offenses once they have tape. I also expect our offense to slow down a bit as McD uses up his new wrinkles and teams adjust. At some point Tua is going to need time to progress through reads as teams will take away his primary reads. Been really impressed how quickly he’s getting the ball out despite throwing downfield. Also surprising how aggressively Tua is attacking the defense. There will be some games he throws multiple picks, but hopefully that is offset by how explosive the passing attack can be. Good start!
Dude, good to see you
Achane will be his newest wrinkle, I think McDaniel has tons of stuff to draw from.
As long as we keep executing at a high level we’re good for at least 3 TDs per game on offense. That’s a big deal. I don’t think we’re peeking yet.🙂
Hey Son, good to see you too! Achane hasn’t really caught my eye yet. Would love to see him have a couple big plays Sunday and hopefully Mostert up the solid play.
Come to the Fest
The Panthers game
Tim after we roll Denver and Buffalo we’ll be peeking for the Fest. Two for me, I’m going to the Giants game first
We’re home in Florida so here’s a tune that’s very cool.
I think there is a relative context here.
Sacks > Pressures … but that doesn’t mean pressures have no value…
I’d prefer a guy get 10 pressures and no sacks rather than 1 sack and no pressures. It means he was potentially disruptive all game instead of on just one play. Of course, if that 1 sack is the game sealing play, it means a bit more, so again, context matters, it’s not always just about numbers.
.
.
Good news about Waddle. Even if he doesn’t play on Sunday, he’s back against the Bills, and that is the most important game over the next moth. I just want to see our team at full health going into Buffalo next week.
^
sigh stop being reasonable WE ARE ARGUING HERE LOL
No shit! Don’t you just hate cooler, objective heads?
lol
How can you be in concussion protocol and still practice? Makes no sense.
I can’t find the link now because I’m on a different computer, but as I read it this morning, in the later stages of protocol they are allowed to practice with no contact so see if they have progressed or if they are still having negative issues. I guess it makes sense. How do you know if you are ready until to see if you are ready.
And not every practice has live tackling or hitting. Some are walk-thru types for the install.
I am going to admit shamefully that I have been quietly celebrating injuries to other teams players after I notice we play them this season. “yay, they will be weaker when we meet them” It’s terrible, but I disassociate the humanity from the competition. All is fair…blah blah. It’s not a good trait.
That being said, I really hope the Bills are 100% healthy when we meet them next week. I want to beat them in their house when both teams are 100%
And I want them to do it through the air while picking Allen multiple times. LOL
We still have the Broncos this Sunday. 3-0 in the AFC and 1-0 in the division is a great start heading to Buffalo in week 4.
muuuhaaahaaahaaaahaaaaahaaaaaaaaa!

It’s ok if I look ahead, the team won’t be doing it. THEY are laser focused on the Donkeys Sunday
A loss against the Broncos would be very disappointing but not the end all.
Really good analysis
https://www.theringer.com/nfl/2023/9/22/23884662/miami-dolphins-offense-mike-mcdaniel-tua-tagovailoa-adapting
It would be very upsetting to me to lose to the Donkeys. My sister is a Donkeys fan and back “when we tried to get Peyton” and her team did and broke all the records and won a superbowl. And I still don’t have a comeback better than, yeah but you drafted Tim Tebow.
Wow, I didn’t realize that Echler hasn’t played since week one. He was injured in our game. I missed that.
Jaylen Waddle, who was a limited participant in Friday’s practice, is considered questionable to play as he remains in concussion protocol.
Waddle has two more days to complete the protocol, but his participation in Friday’s session is a positive sign regardless after he sat out the previous two days.
So do we want the Jets to lose or the Patriots to lose? I tie in the division would be Fing great (as long as we are not part of it. LOL)
Jets need to lose. As long as Miami wins, that puts them up two games on both
And we have a division game up on the Pats. Yeah, Jets need to lose.

RB Salvon Ahmed (groin) is doubtful for Sunday’s game versus the Broncos.
WR Jaylen Waddle (concussion) is questionable. Head coach Mike McDaniel said that as of Friday, Waddle remains in the concussion protocol.
LT Terron Armstead (back/ankle/knee) questionable
DT Raekwon Davis (wrist) questionable
LB Jaelan Phillips (back) questionable
Simmons is out- that’s huge.
we had mostly full participation today so they are questionable, but all practiced in full which is positive

Phelon – Exactly what I’m implying. That could be one of the most meaningless stats ever, quickest to pressure. Get back to me when he changes that to quickest to sack the QB.
The reason they track these types of stats is, because pressure leads to the QB getting rid of the ball before he wants to
It’s 3rd down and you sack the QB for a 5 yard loss or you pressure him into an incomplete pass, either way it’s 4th down
Of course the sack is better straight up, but would you rather have 1 3rd down sack for the day or 4 QB pressures, that resulted in incomplete passes?
This stat doesn’t differentiate between the situations, it’s more of a percentage game
I am rewatching the pats game and man was Ingold fing chippy. He was going at guys on the ground like a terrier after they were already blocked to the backs.
They track everything these days, it’s Stat overload if you ask me. If you say you’d rather have 4 pressures than 1 sack, I’ll tell you I’d rather have 4 sacks than 1 , but dacks are king. pressure. I’m not saying pressures are useless, but some pressures are, especially if the QB still makes the play. To be honest, I despise watching baseball games when
it’s on Amazon or ESPN, they just bombard you with Stat after Stat, what this guy’s likely percentage of reaching base, hitting a HR, or striking out. It ruins the whole experience for me, I just want to enjoy the game. Pressures count but sacks just count so much more.
Bottomline is a D that pressures the hell out of an O, not allowing them to run their O is the most effective, sometimes it includes sacks, sometimes just throw aways, sometimes both
Against Buffalo before MM we saw them pressure us to death
The last Chargers drive against us is an example of this with sacks, but if Herbert had just thrown the ball away 4 times it would’ve had the same effect
Hope this works…
Great song. I started to post that a couple of weeks ago.
I love this…

Some pretty good games, some of these teams will be exposed after today with the soft schedule they’ve previously played
Sounds like you’re talking about UCF they start Big 12 Conference play at Kansas State without our QB
Have fun at the game Herd
We have a weddin to go to
Herd, Sorry! I know you are already at the game but VT is 1-2 at the 2-0 Herd so I left it off. I won’t screw that up again. 😉
I’m going to come to the fest and sack everyone who thinks pressures are just as important.
🤣🤣🤣
There you go! Awesome SB7!
The point of the argument is that they can be more important, situational Lee. Everything comes down to the situation, occurs in in the actual play.

I heard Phillips is playing
Weeeeeeeeeeeeee. FSU!
Tua’s little brother and Maryland putting it to Michigan State. Two TD passes and 1 rushing. 21-0 in 1st half
3. Tua Tagovailoa is probably the most accurate QB in the NFL.
The only thing anyone can knock Tua for is his durability questions. No other QB in the NFL is as consistently accurate as Tua in or out of the pocket. He currently leads the NFL in yards passing and that could be something that remains throughout the entire NFL season. Take away the deep route and he is perfect on the short. In fact, teams should want him to throw deep, that is when he is most inaccurate, albeit barely.

Damn!
I’m not too concerned about Waddle missing this game. We should still be too much for the Broncos to handle. Just need him back for Buffalo.
Hopefully Armstead plays, and can go for more than a quarter or two before getting injured again.

This is Goode’s third and final elevation. A signing to the 53-man roster could be imminent.
If Phillips plays, I’m going to watch him like a hawk and track a new stat I made up just to drive Mike nuts. I’m calling it ‘near pressures’.
I expect Phillips’ stat line to look something like this:
sacks – 1
pressures -4
near pressures – 32
If he even comes close to getting that many near pressures, I think that should silence all his doubters.
Is that like a “pressure pressure?”
lol, exactly
Oregon putting a beatdown on Colorado.
They just showed Oregon’ coaches speech and he said
“They are fighting for clicks and we are fighting for wins”
Which is the line of the century as far as I am concerned
When Steve brought up teams will have their weaknesses exposed. I thought of the Colorado defense.
Good fluff article on Mostert

Didn’t think FSU was going to pull it off today.
Just bought Madden 24. The Dolphins better be fing good. $69.99
Keys to the game tomorrow.
1. Pressure Wilson and force him into mistakes.
2. Don’t let them get a running game going.
3. On offense keep doing what we’re doing.
Don’t you mean sack him? 😉
Sacks would be good.😜
LOL 😂😂😂😂😂😂🤣🤣🤣🤣🗿
only 1 presnap penalty so far … 46 last year, 3rd worst in league
With the exception of those snap issues the entire offense looks more in sync.
Chosen elevated

Watch, Chosen gets elevated from the PS and will be active but Cedric Wilson who is on the 53 will be inactive. Wilson is a wasted roster spot.
