2023 Season – Game 8 – Patriots @ Dolphins

It’s been a crazy week, it seemed as if we may be heading into this huge divisional home game missing quite a few very important players. As it turns out, we may actually be getting back some extremely important players. Nothing has been confirmed as of yet, but there is a chance we may see CB Jalen Ramsey get his first game action as a Miami Dolphin. It’s also possible that DB Nik Needham may see his first game action since his achilles tear in Week 6 of last season. Needham plays mostly inside at nickel, and always seems to rise to the occasion. WR Tyreek Hill, who injured his hip last week against Philadelphia was seemingly going to miss some time, but now appears to be ready to go against the Patriots. On the bad side of the ledger, it looks like we have lost OG Isaiah Wynn for the rest of the season. With Terron Armstead perpetually OUT, and Connor Williams questionable with a groin injury, that leaves the O-line paper thin. RB Raheem Mostert looks like he will play after sustaining a knee injury in Sunday Night’s game against the Eagles. The invisible rookie CB Cam Smith is now out with a foot injury and did not practice yesterday. One more to add, S Jevon Holland did log in a limited practice wearing the customary red jersey for those in concussion protocol. LB David Long Jr. appears to be fine and logged a full practice, which is good news.

With the Isaiah Wynn injury, and the aforementioned Terron Armstead OUT, the Dolphins O-line if Connor Williams can’t go will look like this . . .

LT Kendall Lamm – LG Lester Cotton – C Liam Eichenberg – RG Robert Hunt – RT Austin Jackson

OG Lester Cotton looked like he might have been close to winning the starting LG spot in training camp and preseason where he impressed. He did struggle some against Philadelphia’s big defensive line, but I expect him to be more prepared this week. Kendall Lamm looks passable at LT, but definitely not as good as Terron Armstead when healthy, whenever that actually occurs. Liam Eichenberg has had a difficult time, and while his snaps are accurate, more than starter Connor Williams, that’s the only positive to speak of. Back to safety for a moment, I had heard earlier in the week that DB Nik Needham might play Safety opposite S DeShon Elliott, but now it appears as if it will be Brandon Jones. It seems as if that situation is fluid and could change depending on the matchup. Hopefully, Holland can clear concussion protocol, but that doesn’t seem likely.

Let me address Jaelan Phillips, and clarify some things. I’m a Jaelan Phillips fan. I like the kid, he has the right work ethic, enthusiasm and physical ability to be a great player in the NFL. What I hated was all the hype he received before the season. I liken that to being on the cover of a Madden game. It’s a curse! As such, it has been a curse. Phillips is nowhere near a player being considered for DPOY, he was injured early, played ineffectively through that injury for 2 games before missing 3. After 7 games, Phillips has played in 4 games (starting 2) and has 20 tackles (11 solo), 1 TFL, 5 QB hits, and 1.5 sacks. His replacement, on the other hand has been far more effective, AVG or Andrew Van Ginkel. AVG has started 5 games, played in all 7, and 31 tackles (19 solo), 4 TFL’s, 9 QB hits, and 4 sacks. When folks gush about how great Phillips has been, sorry guys, but just not true. The stud has been AVG, not Jaelan Phillips. Now Phillips has plenty of time to be the stud we all hoped he could be, but up till now, as Larry David might say, “Curb Your Enthusiasm”.

It looks as if RB Raheem Mostert will likely have a large role this week. It’s odd, I haven’t seen anything about RB Jeff Wilson Jr. What will be interesting to see is who gets the touches when Mostert comes off the field. RB De’Von Achane will probably not see any action until after our BYE week, so Week 11. That leaves Jeff Wilson Jr., Salvon Ahmed, and rookie Chris Brooks. If it were my choice, I’d like to see more of Chris Brooks. Wilson is under contract in ’24 as well, but can definitely be a cap casualty with only a $700K dead cap hit. Brooks is not under contract for next season, he came in as a UDFA and is a bargain at $600K this season. Brooks and Wilson both are hard runners, but Chris Brooks will be 24 going on 25 while Wilson will be 28 going on 29 with a long injury history. Of course, Achane returning will mean less carries for everyone, including top back Raheem Mostert. Before Achane was injured, Mostert and Achane were basically splitting carries, and with great results.

If X is healthy enough to go Sunday, we may finally see the CB tandem we’ve only dreamed of, Xavien Howard and Jalen Ramsey. To be realistic though, Ramsey should be on a snap count, which will limit how many snaps he plays, so Eli Apple will probably see a fair amount of action, or possibly Kader Kohou. If Ramsey and Apple split time on the outside, Kohou and Needham may split snaps inside, where both are best suited. Both Kohou and Needham have done their best work inside. Ideally, we’d see Holland and Elliott at safety, but unfortunately, we might have to wait a week to see that quartet. If somehow Holland were to clear concussion protocol, I wouldn’t be surprised if Brandon Jones plays while Holland, who is so important to this team is given a rest this week.

At WR, River Cracraft has been designated to return from IR and has the customary 21 day period to be activated. If Hill is playing, and it appears as if he is, and WR Jaylen Waddle is able to go, he was dealing with a back injury in Sunday Night’s clash with the Eagles, it will probably be Hill, Waddle and Berrios. After that, Cedrick Wilson Jr. got some action and made the most of it, so I’d expect him to be active. It would be a toss-up between Robbie Chosen and Chase Claypool, I don’t expect the Dolphins to rush back Cracraft this week, but who really ever knows? Also, hopefully FB Alec Ingold is ok with his foot injury and create some room for whomever is carrying the football. I’d love to see the 3 pass rushers, Phillips – AVG – Chubb make a killing this weekend. You can include Wilkins, Sieler, Davis and any of the other defenders as well, but I’d love specifically for the trio to wreak some havoc on Mac Jones, and take over the game.

Tua is not a free agent next year so he is not our top offseason priority to resign. We picked up his 5th year option at a cost of $23,171,000. I do see them resigning him on long term to a big contract that would clear a large chunk of his cap hit next year though.

  3. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

so basically we are fucked. OUr entire Oline, most of our D line, most of our WR’s most of our CB’s and all of our back up safeties…..

And we are ALREADY way over the cap. Tell me how great Grief is again.

    • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

I think we need to resign all 6 OL. For the rest of the offense Berrios and maybe Cracraft and Claypool.

Defense: Wilkins and AVG are a must then Elliott, Jones and Needham.

  4. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

This game Sunday is the perfect game to get back Conner Williams, Armstead and Hunt on the Oline and Holland and (Maybe) Howard on Defense. Then we get the bye to get healthy again before starting our home stretch sweep.

I disagree. Locking up your QB long term is the priority as he enters his final season especially when you consider that his contemporaries from the same draft class have already done so before the start of this season

OL on the roster next year.

    Jaelan Phillips OLB
    Duke Riley OLB

    David Long ILB
    Jerome Baker ILB
    Channing Tindall ILB

  11. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

QB good. Other than giving Tua an extension and reducing 2024 cap hit.

    Tua Tagovailoa QB
    Mike White QB

  13. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

    TE needs more depth.

    Durham Smythe TE
    Julian Hill TE

  14. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

FB Alec Ingold is on the 2024 roster.

Rest of RB room looks good.

    Raheem Mostert RB
    Devon Achane RB
    Jeff Wilson RB
    Chris Brooks RB

  15. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

K Sanders and LS Ferguson are on the roster.

    Rock, we need a Punter!

  16. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

I just don’t see how Ogbah stays without a resturcture. Is he worth pushing money down the road when we will need to resign Waddle and Phillips for 2025.

If we part ways with Ogbah (designated post June 1 release):
    2024 Dead Cap: $2,000,000
    2025 Dead Cap: $2,000,000
    2024 Cap Savings: $15,800,000

Baker would be next. His cap hit in 2024 is $14,874,111 after we voided the last 2 years of his contract. That is way too much for Baker.

If we part ways with Baker (designated post June 1 release):
    2024 Dead Cap: $3,741,111
    2025 Dead Cap: $1,232,222
    2024 Cap Savings: $11,133,000

That’s almost 27 mil in cap savings.

Only problem is who replaces Baker?

  17. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Tim, I know you are only worried about this season. lol

It’s cold outside and I am bored.

  18. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

IMO, we need cap space to resign:

    Connor Williams OC/LG
    Austin Jackson RT
    Robert Hunt RG
    Kendall Lamm LT
    Isaiah Wynn RT/OG
    Robert Jones RG/LG

    Christian Wilkins IDL

    Andrew Van Ginkel EDGE/OLB/ILB

    DeShon Elliott S
    Brandon Jones S

    Nik Needham CB

    Braxton Berrios WR
    Chase Claypool WR
    River Cracraft WR

Plus, we will need to add a few more players though some will not impact the top 51 in cap

  19. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

I guess it would have been good for me to save all this crap for the bye week when it is slow. LOL

  20. Wyoming85's avatar Wyoming85 says:

  21. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

If we resign all our OL free agents and let Ogbah and Baker go as a cap casualty.

    30. Jeremiah Trotter Jr. ILB Clemson
    61. Graham Barton OT Duke
    158. Ladd McConkey WR Georgia
    164. Nazir Stackhouse DT Georgia
    189. Jaylen Wright RB Tennessee
    222. Chris Braswell EDGE Alabama

Braswell is an athletic freak at 6’3 255 and runs a 4.5. Someone will probably take a bigger chance and take him earlier.

  22. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

RB Jaylen Wright would be a good target to replace Ahmed in the RB room. Wright is 5’11, 210 pounds and runs a 4.31 to 4.35. Though it takes him a sec to get there.

What I like more about him is he is a tough tackle. He doesn’t go down easy. Runs like he is 230.

My only knock is he doesn’t have the make you miss moves in the open field. He just tries to run through the contact.

The NFL Draft isn’t until April, but I’m still really miffed that we don’t have a 3rd rounder… thanks to Steve Ross’ tampering with Brady and Payton. Not to mention, we lost our 1st rounder this past draft. 😡

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Nevertheless… in a strange turn of events, we’re in the driver’s seat of the AFC if we beat the Chefs* this Sunday in Germany!!! 😀

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Ross blew that….. but I still love him cause he brought us shade. Watching the games is like 15-20 degrees cooler without the direct sun. And cause of the hole in the top… we didn’t lose the heat advantage.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Yes, Ross is not a complete loser. He’s spent $$$ to make both the roster and the fan experience that much better. I hope he wins a Super Bowl for all he’s done… and I think we have — in fact — gone all-in this season.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

How did Ross make all those billions?…. by building stuff. And his first moves were to build up the stadium. Only when he gets involved in football moves does he get in trouble. And whether was the plan all along or just how the cards fell…. yeah it is feeling like an “all in” season.

  27. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Achane has averaged 12.3 yards per attempt and scoring a touchdown on more than 15% of his touches. I knew his stats were great but didn’t realize they were that mind blowing.

We all saw how flat Buffalo was when they tried to go to London with only a few days to adjust … KC is doing the same thing. I’m glad Fins went on Monday.

I have a gut feeling of optimism that KC has made a mistake and we are in a position to ’embarrass’ them … especially if X and Holland play alongside Ramsey. I really think the Fins NEED this game more than the Chiefs right now.

I hope dearly that next week there are a ton more German Dolphins fans after we unleash a complete game on them. Run game, check. Pass game, check. special teams, check. Take MaAuto out of the game, check. Pick the anointed one, check.

We have to run the ball, or at a minimum sting together long drives 10-12 plays. Do that and cut MaAuto’s legs out from under him and we are golden going into the bye Then come back to LV who is in a tailspin, the Jets who are no joke, but can win big or fall to pieces, who knows, then Washington who is tanking and Tenn who will be starting a rookie at QB.

If we can beat the Chefs this week we can really make hay

There is a legitimate non-homer math chance that we will be 10-2 come December. Even in my most Homeraid addled moments this off-season I didn’t predict that!

    Nice interview

Not spam (it’s fucking crazy that typing not spam allows it to go through!)

I said it yesterday, I like that McD is team building while building a team. I think the decision to go as a team early is going to be the right decision. They are getting over the Jet lag that KC will have to deal with, they have the players all together reinforcing the bond because they are spending all their down time together too and they are FOCUSED.

I have PS4 as well, the Star Wars edition. It’s pretty cool came with one controller that has the rebel Alliance and empire symbols on it, and the system itself. My son destroys me at Battlefront II, and nearly every other game we play!

This game will be the first with our top players on defense this season.

  78. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

If Baldy is right, and I hope he is, our defense could be setup for a big 2nd half of the season. We have the talent. Our defense gets overlooked because of our offense and rightly so. Maybe the defense starts to match the offense.🙂

Weird seeing loads of Fins posts and press conferences when the US is mostly still in bed or just waking up. Jones will be in for him.

Hunt out and Armstead “very encouraging”. Williams had a good week at C.

    So that’s ……….. encouraging.

Have to say I’m not mega-confident about this one ……… it’s only the homer in me that sided with the Fins above. KC have got a lot of ways of hurting you and they all stem from the Walrus and PM, but we won’t see a repeat of last week’s divisional result for the Chefs I suspect. I think we have a lot of ways of hurting KC too. For me it all rides on our D turning up. If it does, and Tua plays as we know he can against KC’s pass rush, I hope we can sneak it. Whilst I REALLY want us to win this one for obvious reasons, the sky won’t fall in on me if we don’t. If we end the season healthy and maintain the upwards team-trajectory, I think we can beat anyone, anywhere in the play-offs if we get everything together. I just don’t want that theory put to the test.

Only holds about 55k Phel, but supposed to be one of the loudest in Germany. Just happens to be the nominated “Chiefs home” in Europe, so whilst it probably won’t be Arrowhead loud, they will deffo have HFA.
