Dolphins Training Camp Notes

Dolphins began training camp July 25th, and it will continue through to August 5th, just 3 days from now. There have been some good stories, and we all hope those story lines continue all the way through to the season. One in particular has been OLB Quinton Bell. Bell, 6’4 250 began his career with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2020, then played for the Atlanta Falcons in 2022. He spent last season on the Dolphins practice squad. I believe he flashed some last year in camp as well, but it would be a wonderful thing if he became a solid depth player. After OLB Shaq Barrett unexpectedly retired, the Dolphins wasted no time reuniting with DE Emmanuel Ogbah. I stress that Ogbah is primarily a defensive lineman, DE specifically, and his 5.5 sacks were mostly from the defensive line, playing with DT or DE. We addressed the OLB spot in the draft, twice to be exact with our first pick, #21 OLB Chop Robinson and then again in RD 5 #158 Mo Kamara. We’re all aware that both OLB’s Bradley Chubb and Jaelan Phillips are rehabbing from injuries suffered near the end of the season, so when either both of these players are back to being themselves in unknown.

CB Kader Kohou is another player having a nice camp. With the offseason addition of CB Kendall Fuller, and the fact that Jalen Ramsey is on the roster as well, Kohou will likely see more playing time inside at nickel. Nik Needham, also one of my favorites as is Kohou, just wasn’t back to the level of play before his injury. Some bad news, CB Cam Smith went out with an injury but should be back. WR Erik Ezukanma, who showed that physical nature on some run plays last season was also injured, and his status is more questionable than Smith’s, who again should return to action as soon as today.

An interesting development recently came out about the NFL rules going forward in 2024, and this rule specifically affects our team, as well as the SF 49ers and the LA Rams. The rule seems to indicate that the motion that we use so often pre snap with Tyreek Hill running and then angling towards the line of scrimmage will no longer be allowed. Mind you, this is still somewhat speculative, the rule was highlighted in red, as all rules that haven’t been enforced properly are every single season. Supposedly, there was a gray area in the interpretation of “abrupt” motion, so if they do enforce this, we’ll see how Mike McDaniel counters this being taken away. I was actually surprised when I saw the Dolphins implementing it, it did look unfair, and then I thought “Why doesn’t every team do this”? I guess we’ll have to wait and see how this plays out.

WR Jaylen Waddle has had a great camp. He’s been catching passes and getting open on any and every defender, including our own superstar, Jalen Ramsey. That’s important, because there might come a time in the next couple of years if Tyreek Hill is still with the team, that Waddle becomes the main target, and Hill the #2 WR. It would be fantastic if Waddle can step up to another level. New C Aaron Brewer had some low snap issues, but otherwise has looked good. I’m sure we all remember the snapping issues our previous C Connor Williams had, right? Still, we want to se that cleaned up by seasons start.

Another nice camp story is the emergence of LB Anthony Walker, who played 4 years for the Colts and 3 for the Browns, and at 28, is showing well as a inside LB for the Dolphins. Walker battled injuries last season and is happy to have a fresh start with the Dolphins. The battle at NT has been a good one between NT Benito Jones and NT Teair Tart. CB Ethan Bonner has also impressed in camp, and although Bonner is behind Cam Smith and Kendall Fuller on the depth chart, that could change for sure.

One point I want to bring out, we’ve discussed it already, but it really resonated with me. CB Jalen Ramsey stating “It’s time to be bullies”. I can’t tell you how happy I was to hear that. Sometimes you just have to get it out there, and it can manifest itself into something real. I don’t have to tell you that when a lot of people think about our team, the word “soft” comes to mind. If thinking they’re going to be bullies helps purge the softness, so be it. I couldn’t agree with Jalen more. Purge that December swoon, purge it before it starts. Think of yourselves as the bad boys, and then play like it on the field, and punish teams like the Ravens, Steelers, Chiefs, etc. Smack them in the mouth and let them know you’re on the field right there with them. Keep feeding this mentality, make it so!

    More from Joe Schad:

Miami Dolphins Defense vs. Atlanta Falcons training camp notes

    • Kader Kohou was step for step against OJ Hilare in DB vs. WR drills.
    • Kyle Pitts caught a ball over Ezekiel Vandenburgh.
    • Dylan Drummond couldn’t shake Isaiah Johnson.
    • Zach Sieler would have recovered a low snap bobbled by Kirk Cousins. The play was basically blown dead.
    • Kendall Fuller was step for step vs. Pitts.
    • Jalen Ramsey emphatically broke up a Cousins pass to Darnell Mooney.
    • Quinton Bell batted down a Cousins pass. D was stout vs. Cousins & Co. on that series.
    • Chop Robinson chopped down Carlos Washington Jr. If Robinson arrived any sooner, he would have intercepted the handoff from Michael Penix Jr.
    • Teair Tart stopped Tyler Allgeier before he could get to the edge.
    • Bijan Robinson just zig-zagged his way through the middle of the Dolphins’ D.
    • David Long Jr. with nice stop on Allgeier.
    • Sieler likely would have sacked Cousins.
    • Robinson had a clean shot at Allgeier.
    • Ramsey came up after a stop jawing big-time at the Falcons.
    • Carlos Washington Jr. found running room around the right side. Then up the middle for a handful of yards.
    • Jase McClellan was trying to haul in a Penix pass when he heard footsteps from Cam Brown.
    • Channing Tindall sighting! He stopped Allgeier cold.
    • Penix incomplete. Johnson on the coverage.
    • Kohou batted down a Cousins pass.
    • DUST-UP ALERT! Elijah Campbell hits Drake London after a reception. London bounces off Ethan Bonner and there’s a major coming together by both teams. McDaniel rushes in to try to quell disturbance. Somehow, Hill ended up in the mix even though he’d been on the other field. So did Terron Armstead.
    • Robinson stopped by Bell & Co.
    • Cousins finds London over Fuller. London does nice job to get his feet down in bounds.
    • Allgeier run blown up by Riley.
    • Penix found KhaDarel Hodge along the sidelines inches over Neal for a good gain.
    • Ogbah gets encouragement from both Jaelan Phillips and Bradley Chubb after a stop.
    • Cousins tries to lob one to Mooney in the end zone, but Fuller and Holland combine to break it up.
    • Marcus Maye breaks up a pass by Cousins in the end zone.
    • Penix’s turn in red zone. Da’Shawn Hand stuffs Allgeier. On second-and-goal at the 7, Penix hits Washington for the score.
    • In two-minute drill starting on Falcons’ 35: Cousins to Hodge against Fuller for good gain. On third down, Cousins slips pass by Robinson to Pitts before drill fizzles.

Who the fuck cares and why would you judge me as such? I don’t like the man, never have, and it has NOTHING to do with politics. I’ve been clear about that on this blog from day ONE.

Wyo got his panties in a wad because I defended myself, my opinion, and my reaction and called both of you out for your NOT respecting my right to have an opinion that was not FAR RIGHT-WING (lol…my own). He played victim and left.

Then, for some reason, a boxer gets beat in the Olympics and again the American political right wing goes nuts and calls the winner of the match a “man”. I could give a shit about women boxing as it is a sport that is almost oxymoronic to me. Women punching each other in the face does nothing for me, but for some of you it’s an international/worldly disgrace.

Both alleged “men” boxers have been beaten multiple times by other women. The Russian (Communist)-led IBA has pushed the agenda that they are men without proof. All of this was sourced in the USA Today article that you refused to research or educate yourself about from multiple sources, and called “pathetic.” Yet, you offered ZERO sourcing except your mouth.

Calling the USA Today article a whitewash without reading it, is typical of the RIGHT-WING and pathetic, in my opinion. I didn’t say you were pathetic, but your statement, to me, was clearly pathetic AND cherry picked to suit your agenda and claim.

      And I quote:

“I’m no fan of the IOC especially when they DON’T sanction Chinese and Russian dopers/athletes, but geez, loueez, calling out an USA Today article as ‘whitewashing’ is more pathetic, kinda like, chasing conspiracy theories.”

Now, you play the victim, name call, and then, leave. Lmfao!!!

The way I see it, you owe me an apology for all of the name calling. And, it would be great if you left your political opinions (through MacDonald songs) at home…lol. I don’t come hear to be “educated” by the far right-wing.

BBM…you have been calling me names since I commented on the Trump assassination. You started by calling me a “Communist.” Why? Because I laughed at the assassination “miss”?…

    ————–

I went on vacation for a week, the day after the assassination attempt on Donald Trump. Fun in the sun and surf, great food and drink, visited a few military museums, and did my annual check-up on the ships and subs that have returned home from deployment. It was SO good to see the Eisenhower back home and safe after her stint in the Middle East, post 10/7 (Hamas attacking Israel). As such, I had very little time to check in here at the time.

Had I known that you “LAUGHED at the assassination ‘miss'”, I’d have FAR stronger words than my guy BB Mike just calling you a “communist”… BELIEVE THAT.

There’s absolutely nothing funny, laughable, or joke-worthy about something that could have plunged our great country into another civil war… so I find the “communist” comment to be very light, indeed.

Look, these are very serious and dangerous times we’re living in. We’re on the cusp of WW3 (we’re already there, just waiting for the first bomb to be dropped), the global stock-market is collapsing, and our country is most unstable enough as it is.

PLEASE, do not make matters worse by laughing and saying some BS about a former president nearly having his brains blown out, then play the victim card saying you were called a name, and then pour more gas on the fire after smoking up again.

You’re better than that, Krishna, man. I’m trying to be really cool about this and you’ll notice that I’m not calling you any names. You fucked with the bull and got the horns for VERY serious rabble-rousing… that’s just the way I see it. I don’t blame BB Mike for losing his always cool self with you. I would have too if I read your comment in real time.

NOW is the time for America to come together… not to divide. Very few things in this world scare me, but I honestly fear the worst is coming very soon: WW3. Let’s unite for the purpose of AMERICA, my friend.

  23. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

    MF13

I too have been busy with other stuff lately.

I don’t know and don’t really want to find out what all the anger is about on this blog.

I blame social media among other similar forces for getting Americans all angry at each other.

That is a well-known way to destroy a country or team or business or family … or blog.

I wish everyone running for office, deciding who to vote for, commenting on their favorite teams both players and management, and posting their opinions on any and all topics would discuss the small differences between our positions with open-mindedness, tolerance, and polite civility.

instead it seems to have become the norm to ridicule anyone who has a difference of opinion, use foul language and insulting labels for those with an alternative perspective, and question the patriotism and integrity of everyone who interprets the extant dataset and arrives at a contrary plan for what to do about it.

There are very few actual communists and total racists in America, yet people type as if these are majorities.

I know hundreds of Democrats and not a single one is a communist.

I know hundreds of Republicans and none of them hate it if a black guy makes the winning score for their team

we need to stop portraying the opposing political party as some sort of evil force that is the total opposite of “our” party.

This is a very bad recent trend in which party organizers’ message tries to draw a huge difference between the two.

yes a few Americans are on the radical fringe at either end of the spectrum, but by far most Americans just want to chill with family and friends and have a good life.

Two more examples: 98% of Americans in both parties believe there’s a problem on the Mexican border. Where we disagree is what to do about it. Even then most Americans agree it would be good to prevent criminals and spies and lazy bums to enter. The debate is how to weed them out (and also keep the numbers coming in to a manageable amount) while still allowing true refugees and hard-working future citizens in.

I mean that’s how your ancestors got here.

And we have plenty of room for more. But no one wants to pay for baby factories and drug mules. So … we’re smart. If we can just stop screaming at each other and work out a good plan, we can solve this problem.

#2 a huge majority of Americans in both parties believe Israel has the absolute right to defend itself and retaliate against Hamas etc. And also most everyone thinks Israel needs to be more careful about harming innocent civilians and more tolerant of non-Jews within its borders and in neighboring territories.

Also almost all Americans know that the religious fanatics ruling Iran and operating as terrorists in the Middle East are the real enemies

So why can’t we stop screaming at each other and formulate a plan amenable to the consensus?

    #3 BONUS:

The current mess surrounding gender in the world today is not a Democrat or Republican issue. Humanity is going through an enormous investigation into the traditional hard division between male and female. This chaos cannot be resolved quickly. But screaming at each other won’t help us figure out if sex organs or chromosomes or personal declaration of choice is the way to know.

Sports will continue to be the site of most friction because we have so firmly divided men and women for competitive sports.

It will take time and well-intentioned deep consideration to figure out a way to go that is fair to men and women and those who think of themselves as both or neither.

There is no easy solution. But only through rational scientific empathy can we ever get to something that works.

Please everyone use your huge power that you have to try to help stop this trend of hating on those who have arrived at a slightly different world view than yours. Their matrix of experience has led them to their place. Most are not bad people. We need all you good people to help heal America before we lose the whole thing.

HC Mike McDaniel Wednesday August 7 media availability coverage thread:

On Waddle and Berrios missed practices: minor stuff. We have a collection of minor things going on. Good news is they aren’t major things.

On Malik Washington — What Malik has done well is find how to be a professional very early. How he’s studying his ownership of the playbook and how reliable he is with his assignments for his teammates. Coach referenced Malik’s veteran-like approach.

Coach says he feels supreme conviction that yesterday was fully utilized. Happy with his team’s day. He says, offensively, he was pumped to go back at the tape and see the things they’ve been working on since April. The stuff he was looking for specifically was there, he says.

The evaluation of data and player’s playing time for Friday night will be determined tomorrow. McDaniel says he doesn’t think we’ll be surprised with regards to Tua’s playing time – a.k.a – he probably won’t play.

Coach on what he liked from his defense yesterday – I saw a spirit that I was very confident in, but you don’t know until you face a different squad. That spirit, energy and standard of play was really cool and present throughout practice from the first play.

McDaniel says White and Thompson was close last year and that both players have improved a lot from this time last year. He says the battle this year is neck and neck.

Dolphins 1st offense struggling a bit in this red zone drill. Mostert was just stopped for no gain from the 4-yard line, Falcons seem to have learned from previous red zone drill, in which Fins got the best of them. Jaylen Wright just stopped for TFL. Wow

Practice comes to a halt as Falcons’ Mondale Moore is carted off

Practice concluded under a cloud of concern.

Receiver Rondale Moore was down in the end zone for several minutes, with the entire team gathered around him in addition to both coaches, before he was carted off.

Trainers immobilized Moore before the cart drove off.

It was unclear how the injury occurred.

  95. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

    From Joe Schad:

Miami Dolphins Offense vs. Atlanta Falcons training camp notes

    • Former Falcons TE Jonnu Smith delivered a red zone touchdown.
    • Center Aaron Brewer may have gotten banged up during team drills.
    • The Dolphins’ offense clearly has plenty to iron out before Week 1 vs. Jacksonville. Sloppy snaps. Linemen and receivers not playing their best.
    • Tua has not been sharp in the first hour-plus of joint practice with Atlanta.
    • Tua, Mike White, Tyreek and assistant Darrell Bevell appeared to be trying to sort some things out together in between drives.
    • ua overthrew River Cracraft in the red zone.
    • Low snap by Aaron Brewer to Tua. Again. Jeepers.
    • Je’Quan Burton of FAU caught a touchdown from Skylar Thompson in a red zone drill.
    • QBs from both teams had some fun trying to lob a pass into a net stationed in the back of the end zone from the 25. Hitting for the Dolphins were Tua Tagovailoa, Mike White (twice) and QB coach Darrell Bevell. Falcons making the connection were Nathan Rourke and Penix.
    • River Cracraft continues to make plays on offense.
    • Durham Smythe could not complete the catch in the end zone after a short pass from Mike White.
    • All Dolphins quarterbacks seemed a bit off the mark early in practice.
    • Malik Washington hauled in a deep bomb from Skylar Thompson.
    • Malik Washington again! This time a deep out from Mike White.

    Joe Schad:

Miami Dolphins Defense vs. Atlanta Falcons training camp notes

    • Cousins hit Pitts for either a big gain or a touchdown (judgment call) over Elijah Campbell.
    • Jase McClellan’s run was stopped for a loss by Isaiah Mack. Carlos Washigton’s run was then stopped cold by Mack.
    • Chop Robinson stopped Jase McClellan cold for no gain.
    • Allgeier ran 10 yards up the middle for a probable touchdown. Little resistance.
    • Channing Tindall broke up a pass to Jordan Thomas with a good hit.
    • Duke Riley stopped Allgeier for a loss.
    • Ethan Bonner stopped Drake London just shy of the goal line after a completion from Cousins.
    • Jake Bailey’s first punt against the Falcons was nearly blocked by Bralen Trice.
    • Michael Penix’s end-zone throw intended for Casey Washington was broken up by Isaiah Johnson.Johnson broke up another Penix pass a minute later.
    • Miami’s run defense allowed a huge seam for Bijan Robinson. In a game, he would have gained at least 15.
    • Kirk Cousins hit Kyle Pitts over Johnson.
    • Cousins hit a leaping Pitts over Kader Kohou for about 15 yards.
    • Robinson recovered a low snap that Cousins couldn’t handle to end a drive.
