Dolphins add Offensive Guard

The Dolphins had pick #48, which was sixteen picks into the 2nd RD. After 4 selections were made, Grier lost his mind and traded up to get his guy, OT/OG Jonah Savaiinaeah from Arizona. Once again, Grier showed no patience, no discipline. The Miami Dolphins roster is so far from being one player away. As it turned out, no 1 offensive lineman of any kind was taken between pick #37, the spot that Grier traded up to and our original spot of #48. He’s done this many times before as well. In last year’s draft, he used this year’s 3rd RD pick to get into the 4th RD last year to draft RB Jaylen Wright. Did we actually use Jaylen Wright last season? 68 rushing attempts and 3 receptions. Jaylen Wright has a 4 year contract, and we basically redshirted him for his rookie season. That’s just awful management.

Here’s some perspective. The Baltimore Ravens, always considered a solid organization, owned the 29th pick in RD1. They stayed put there, and took the best safety on the board, Malaki Starks, the player they wanted. In RD 2, the Ravens stayed put at their pick (#59) and took an EDGE pass rusher that was supposed to have been drafted in RD1, but their patience was rewarded having a highly rated prospect fall into their laps in Marshall DE/OLB Mike Green. Even the Eagles, who just won the Superbowl, moved up just one spot in RD 1 to take the LB they wanted, Jihaad Campbell. In RD 2, they stayed put at Pick #64 and took the safety that so many love here, S Andrew Mukuba from Texas. Restraint, discipline, patience. Grier has none of these, and I also honestly wonder if he actually has a plan.

So now, our next pick is #116. We don’t have a starting CB, we have 2 safeties that have been backups but could be serviceable as starters. That’s part of the problem, once again. We’re trying to go on a playoff run and we basically made trades, we traded all our cap space and lots of picks to replace DT Christian Wilkins with DT Kenneth Grant, and replaced OG Robert Hunt with OG Jonah Savaiinaeah. WE gave Tua the huge contract, traded for Jalen Ramsey, gave him a contract extension just a few months ago and then a week before the draft, genius GM Chris Grier tells the whole world the Dolphins and Ramsey have mutually agreed to part ways. Why????? Plan much? What was your plan when you told the world that? Maybe shop him draft day and see what you get. Now you’re desperate and you may end up cutting him and getting zero compensation. This, among many other reasons already outlined is why Grier to be sent packing. We need to find someone better at this job than him, and I don’t think it will be as hard as people think.

So now we go into day 3 armed with 6 picks, one in RD 4 (#116), three in RD 5 (#143,#150,#155) and two in RD 7 (#224,#253). Can we find our starting CB in any of those picks? Who knows? Maybe, but the chances went down considerably just by trading up and trading away your 3rd and 4th RD picks to get there. I’ll remind you that Chris Grier also traded up for OL Liam Eichenberg in the 2021 NFL Draft to select him at #42 RD 2. Once again, no patience, no discipline, and no plan. Let the board come to you, and find good players, don’t be set at any position or player, be flexible, be smart. Grier hasn’t done those things. Even when he hit on a couple of picks like DT Christian Wilkins and OG Robert Hunt, he failed to keep them going into their second contracts. Bad management, simple as that. This should be his last year, but Stephen Ross for some reason loves him. Maybe Stephen Ross is a masochist and just loves losing too.

      100%, MM’s type of QB

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

dealt with injuries in 2024, something wasn’t quite right

he’s got a big arm, so when the rush comes he doesn’t have to wind up to throw the ball, like we saw with Tua and a lame duck pick 6 against bills

we need a 3rd string QB, he’s got a year to learn to see if he can be a #2 (Wilson 1 yr contract)

I don’t like the pick, it does have some cap upsides next year

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

      DT3s problem was vision, I think it’s a strength of Ollie’s

    • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

      Strengths

      • Big back with frame and demeanor for volume carries.
      • Gets going downhill without much dancing.
      • Adequate burst with plus tackle-breaking ability between the tackles.
      • Uses stiff-arm and shoulders to batter tacklers in space.
      • Possesses an insatiable thirst to score when he smells paint.
      • Smooth screen release with natural hands.
      • Capable of handling protection asks with more work.

      Weaknesses

      • Production fell off in 2024.
      • Linear runner with tightness in his lowers.
      • Lacks agility for short-area elusiveness.
      • Below-average speed to widen the field or hit home runs.
      • Struggles to plant-and-go quickly on stretch plays.
      • Runs too high and absorbs thunderous shots.

    Zeek Biggers!!!

  29. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

    Zeek Biggers

    • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

      Overview

On paper, Biggers has the measurables that teams search for along the defensive front, but he lacks the build of an NFL interior defender. He’ll flash with a big punch to drive a guard off his spot, but he logs too many reps where he’s slow into contact and jostled around at the point. He’s slow getting off the blocks and misses too many tries. Biggers offers no rush help. He needs to get stronger to take advantage of his length and will have to prove himself as a 3-4 defensive end in the pros.Strengths

      • Has height, weight and length of an NFL 3-4 defensive end.
      • Bypasses block for quick win with stunt-step and arm-over.
      • Traits for better read-and-react with better strength/technique.
      • Reads quarterback’s eyes and gets big hands in passing lane.

      Weaknesses

      • Slow off the ball and into first contact.
      • Below-average anchor and contact balance to rep his gap.
      • Unable to separate and quickly shuck blocks.
      • Lumbers forward in space, missing too many tackles.
      • Poor sack and pressure production as a rusher.

      Conyers

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

        Pre-Draft Analysis

Conyers caught five touchdowns last season, while also throwing for one and running for two more. At 260 pounds, he had the quickest short shuttle for the tight ends at the combine and tested well. He runs fast, tracks the ball well and makes contested catches downfield. Arizona State and Texas Tech using him as a Wildcat quarterback speaks to his ability to make plays with the ball in his hands. He follows his blocks and breaks tackles. Conyers improved his blocking over the course of his college career, and he has the frame to continue to get better. — Steve Muench

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

he’s got a great chance to make 53, considering our lack of TE depth, just has to beat out Hill

  53. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I love the Zeek Biggers pick

Im glad we left the draft with 3 DTs

I wish we would have left with 2 OL

  54. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I feel better about the team after the draft

I like a lot of players we drafted and I like the focus of the draft

but that said, I really think this draft exposed some of Grier’s biggest issues and I would call it a bad draft from that point of view

Trading out of 3rd and 4th seems crazy to me given how many holes we have

also we didn’t need to trade up to get the guy we drafted

Also hated the Ewers pick. If Zack Wilson is not good enough to be QB 2 why pay him the contract you gave him. We don’t need to spend a pick on a practice squad QB

and I was surprised by the marshal pick, doesn’t seem like to many people had this guy on their radar. Could have used that pick for a DT like Pueges and then used the Biggers pick in your CB

I don’t think Greier does a bad job, but I think he is well short of maximizing the opportunities we have

feels like a lot of wasted potential

    • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

  64. Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

    Steve,

    correct on the Ewers/Wilson statement.

    Piggy,

I actually liked trading out of the fourth. Instead of forcing the pick on someone they weren’t high on, the got value by picking up a third rounder next year.

  65. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

All 3 CB’s (2 UDFA) we added have decent size to them.

    • Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

hopefully one of them can contribute. We really need Cam Smith to take that next step this year; that would be a game changer for the secondary. I’m not sure he’s going to be good enough though.

  66. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Safety John Saunders, Jr. is another good UDFA addition, bigger safety at 6’2, 210. He averaged about 3 INT’s a season but last year had 4 FF. He’s really good at punching the ball out.

  67. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:
