Dolphins add Offensive Guard

The Dolphins had pick #48, which was sixteen picks into the 2nd RD. After 4 selections were made, Grier lost his mind and traded up to get his guy, OT/OG Jonah Savaiinaeah from Arizona. Once again, Grier showed no patience, no discipline. The Miami Dolphins roster is so far from being one player away. As it turned out, no 1 offensive lineman of any kind was taken between pick #37, the spot that Grier traded up to and our original spot of #48. He’s done this many times before as well. In last year’s draft, he used this year’s 3rd RD pick to get into the 4th RD last year to draft RB Jaylen Wright. Did we actually use Jaylen Wright last season? 68 rushing attempts and 3 receptions. Jaylen Wright has a 4 year contract, and we basically redshirted him for his rookie season. That’s just awful management.

Here’s some perspective. The Baltimore Ravens, always considered a solid organization, owned the 29th pick in RD1. They stayed put there, and took the best safety on the board, Malaki Starks, the player they wanted. In RD 2, the Ravens stayed put at their pick (#59) and took an EDGE pass rusher that was supposed to have been drafted in RD1, but their patience was rewarded having a highly rated prospect fall into their laps in Marshall DE/OLB Mike Green. Even the Eagles, who just won the Superbowl, moved up just one spot in RD 1 to take the LB they wanted, Jihaad Campbell. In RD 2, they stayed put at Pick #64 and took the safety that so many love here, S Andrew Mukuba from Texas. Restraint, discipline, patience. Grier has none of these, and I also honestly wonder if he actually has a plan.

So now, our next pick is #116. We don’t have a starting CB, we have 2 safeties that have been backups but could be serviceable as starters. That’s part of the problem, once again. We’re trying to go on a playoff run and we basically made trades, we traded all our cap space and lots of picks to replace DT Christian Wilkins with DT Kenneth Grant, and replaced OG Robert Hunt with OG Jonah Savaiinaeah. WE gave Tua the huge contract, traded for Jalen Ramsey, gave him a contract extension just a few months ago and then a week before the draft, genius GM Chris Grier tells the whole world the Dolphins and Ramsey have mutually agreed to part ways. Why????? Plan much? What was your plan when you told the world that? Maybe shop him draft day and see what you get. Now you’re desperate and you may end up cutting him and getting zero compensation. This, among many other reasons already outlined is why Grier to be sent packing. We need to find someone better at this job than him, and I don’t think it will be as hard as people think.

So now we go into day 3 armed with 6 picks, one in RD 4 (#116), three in RD 5 (#143,#150,#155) and two in RD 7 (#224,#253). Can we find our starting CB in any of those picks? Who knows? Maybe, but the chances went down considerably just by trading up and trading away your 3rd and 4th RD picks to get there. I’ll remind you that Chris Grier also traded up for OL Liam Eichenberg in the 2021 NFL Draft to select him at #42 RD 2. Once again, no patience, no discipline, and no plan. Let the board come to you, and find good players, don’t be set at any position or player, be flexible, be smart. Grier hasn’t done those things. Even when he hit on a couple of picks like DT Christian Wilkins and OG Robert Hunt, he failed to keep them going into their second contracts. Bad management, simple as that. This should be his last year, but Stephen Ross for some reason loves him. Maybe Stephen Ross is a masochist and just loves losing too.

    Grier’s explanation on trading picks to move up;

“It didn’t weigh it at all,” Grier said Friday night. “For us, just candid, this was a player that we had targeted. We spent a lot of time with. We had him on a 30 visit and spent a lot of time at all-star games. (Offensive line coach Butch Barry) went out and spent a day with him and had a private workout with him. So this is a player we’re very convicted on for what he can add with his size, his power.

    • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

That I fucked up by trading a third and a fourth round pick to move up and get one I could’ve been patient and taking him later

oh yeah, I got some text messages saying that the other teams were gonna take him.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

he’s a good draft pick. Hard to believe he would not have been there for us without the trade up

Yeah fuckface, we can see that!

  5. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

We’re gonna take CB Zah Frazier (Texas). Whether we trade up for him remains to be seen. lol

  6. Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

Thank you, Mike E.! Hopefully, we have 2 high quality starters in the trenches. If so, maybe he can get them through 2 contracts…lol. A do over..

  7. Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

Some like to dismiss the fact that we traded a pick to get what will probably (hopefully) be a very good player for us. But it’s these types of decisions by Grier that have this team in the position it is in right now. We probably could have gotten him @48, and if not someone else.

  8. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

They obviously are not going BPA, but have targeted specific players they want. The potential was there for Jonah to go before #48. The Dolphins moving up for him probably changed a few draft boards. The 49er’s were high on Jonah also and have a huge hole on the OL after losing Aaron Banks.

That said, I didn’t expect or cared for the trade up with Ratledge and Milum still on the board also.

Jonah does bring more versatility than any of the others though as he has played both OT spots and can play either OG spots.

  9. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Again, Dolphins are targeting players they want and not necessarily going BPA. For this reason, do not be surprised if pick #116 is CB Korie Black.

  10. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Possibilities at 116: RB’s Cam Skattebo, Damien Martinez and DJ Giddens. WR Jaylin Lane. TE Gunnar Helm. OT Marcus Mbow. DT’s CJ West, Joshua Farmer. LB Chris Paul. CB’s Dorian Strong, Quincy Riley, Cobee Bryant and Korie Black. Safties Lathan Ransom, Billy Bowman, RJ Mickens and Jaylen Reed.

I just hope the pick isn’t Quinn Ewers. I will be pissed.

    RJ Harvey goes at 60

Dillon Gabriel end of third round

    and so on

They shouldn’t call them simulators, simulators reflect reality. These should be called draft exercises or games.

I think I would. No pressure to play him, top athlete sit him and let him learn.

  17. Randy's avatar Randy says:

Man, I’m torn. I wanted OL, but I would not have drafted Jonah. I most definitely would not have given up picks for him. Those wasted picks will be missed. Stupid move, if you ask me….but who is? Lol

  18. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Piggy, yeah, those guys also but is was just posting ones ranked high for pick 116. It would be nice to nail a CB but I would also take Mbow or CJ West.

it wouldn’t upset me if the ignore DBs with this 4th and 5th round picks and just draft all OL and DL

  20. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Sonny – Is this code for we shouldn’t be angry with Grier for trading up again?

  21. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

“The Baltimore Ravens selected nine players in the 2024 NFL draft, with only Nate Wiggins (Rd 1 pick 30) and Roger Rosengarten (Rd 2 pick 62) finishing the year as starters or key contributors.”

    https://ravenswire.usatoday.com/story/sports/nfl/ravens/2025/01/29/baltimore-ravens-pff-grades-rookies-2024-nfl-draft-nate-wiggins-roger-rosengarten/78026890007/

I used the Ravens since they were pointed out in the article as ‘the standard’.

No team is going into a draft expecting to get 4 or 5 starters and 2 or 3 excellent backups, even the Ravens. It’s not realistic. If you can get two or three quality starting players out of a draft, you’ve done a good job. Add another backup or two and you’ve had an excellent draft.

No matter what Grier did, he was going to get killed by a majority of fans, because nearly all of us know he needs to go. But the truth is, if we picked up two quality starters on the lines, and we get another starter or back up or two on day 3, then it’s what you want out of a draft. Who cares how you get there?

On the other hand, Eich is a perfect example of Grier’s inability to use extra picks to target the right guy, so we’ll see, lol.

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

I should make it clear, I’m separating this draft from all of Grier’s other mistakes, and just saying right now this draft is unknown.

If we’d kept Wilkins and Hunt instead of wasting picks and money on high profile trades, the team would be in a much better position. And so far this draft is nothing but really just cleaning up the mistakes of getting rid of those two players.

  22. Randy's avatar Randy says:

Sanders is and always was a mid to late round pick. He’s not falling. All the BS about him getting drafted high was just draft drama. He and his family tried to will something into reality, but the skill just isn’t there. He and his family took the risk, and it didn’t pay off. He’d be better off now going UDFA so he can go where he can fit.

We have 7 picks today. That might end up as 5 if we use some to move up for specific prospects.

  25. Randy's avatar Randy says:

I feel great! They took the DT I said I think has the most potential and a huge OL. I wouldn’t have made the Jonah move, but I’m hopeful he turns into a monster inside. He’s limited physically, but those Samoan guys seem to play hard all the time.

  26. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

just watched Shedeur highlights again, I’d absolutely take him with our next pick

he’s got the relaxed Cam Ward pocket presence, without the too comfortableness Cam has, that drives me crazy

his vision and wiggle are special

not sure about all the sacks, but he does keep plays alive, something, someone else doesn’t

    his ball placement looks Tuaesque

Did we trade Captain Hill or Ramsey yet?

  52. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

This draft has played out sorta like I wanted it to. I wanted us to focus completely on the oline and dline, and to set ourselves up to draft a QB next year.

I expected we’d get more than two players out of the draft, but hey, all linemen and we added a pick next year. Woohoo!

  53. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I truly get the feeling that Grier/McD are under a mandate of sorts by Ross regarding this Draft.

There goes Farmer to the Patsies*. SVUCKS!

  55. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

This whole thing with the Sanders kid actually makes me wish I’d watched him play some.

I can’t recall ever seeing such a high profile player that was projected by a lot of pundits to go somewhere between rounds 1-3 that may end up undrafted.

And the people who evaluate him that I see, even on this board, are all over the place on his actual talent.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Shedeur is VERY talented. He’s being kind of ‘black-balled’ by the NFL is my feeling. Why? Because of who his father is and that Deion is likely going to be an NFL HC soon.

The NFL doesn’t want the Sanders family dictating business in THEIR league.

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

I usually think along the lines of talent trumps distraction, meaning if he was that good, he’d be drafted regardless.

But you certainly know more about his ability than I do, so my opinion on this is about as relevant as ‘the eye test’, lol.

  58. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Keep in mind that IF we draft Shedeur and we end up firing Grier and McD if we miss the playoffs again, Deion will be knocking on Ross’ front door to become our next HC.

  59. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

The come back from commercial. “We have QB news!”

And it’s Seattle trading Sam Howell to the vikings lol

  60. Randy's avatar Randy says:

it would appear that all 32 teams don’t seem to feel Mr. Sanders is all that talented. If he were, regardless of the daddy issues, he’d have been drafted by now. Teams don’t pass on talented QBs.
