The Optimists Guide to the 2025 Miami Dolphins Season

For you hardcore fans that watch, and have been watching this team for a long time, or even just for a short time, you want to go into the season feeling like this team is a contender, not only for the division crown, but for the AFC Championship as well. If you watched our team last season, you understand that a lot of things have to go well in order for that to happen. I’m going to outline those things, and give you something to look forward to for this upcoming 2025 season.

We’ve already added some talent in the 2025 NFL Draft, some that were drafted and some that were UDFA’s, Undrafted Free Agents. The Miami Dolphins drafted 8 players, and signed an additional 16 players that were not drafted. Let’s start with the ones we drafted.

Last season, the offensive line was a sore issue for this team. Despite the fact that LT Terron Armstead managed to play 15 games with a bad leg, there were injuries all along the line last season. The Dolphins had plans of starting OG Isaiah Wynn but he was unavailable due to injury. That forced the Dolphins to pivot to Liam Eichenberg to replace Wynn at RG and Robert Jones played LG. 2020 1st RD Pick Austin Jackson was set to play RT and he did, but injuries forced him to miss more than 1/2 the season. OG Isaiah Wynn only managed to play in 6 games, starting 3. Swing Tackle Kendall Lamm was pressed into action and played the remainder of the season at RT when Jackson went out. The Dolphins added big OG Jonah Savaiinaea from Arizona in RD 2, and earlier in Free Agency, the Dolphins picked up OG James Daniels from the Steelers.

The plan for the O-line is to have 2nd year OT Patrick Paul play LT, and next to him will be the veteran James Daniels. Aaron Brewer who played a full season last year will be back at OC, and then the rookie will play RG, Jonah Savaiinaea, with RT Austin Jackson next to him. Obviously, the Dolphins and fans alike hope that this group is ready and able to play a full, successful season. We need health to be on our side for a change, and if we could manage to have all 5 starters play the whole season, it could really make a difference in a positive way. We did add a few depth players, OT Larry Borom from Chicago, OG/OC Liam Eichenberg was re-signed for depth at OG and C, and then a player who was on the Practice Squad in 2024 like OT Jackson Carman, and 2024 7th RD pick OT Ryan Hayes. I feel the crux of this season resides with the success of this unit. QB Tua Tagovailoa has to stay healthy if this team is realistically going to compete for the division and beyond, so the Offensive line is crucial in not only protecting Tua, but the run game needs to make big strides compared to last year where we leaned on RB De’Von Achane too much, and were just awful in converting short yardage situations like 3rd and short and 4th and short. Just abysmal! The Dolphins were 24th in the league at converting 3rd Downs to First Downs at 36.32%. That’s ALL 3rd Down conversions. I don’t have the 3rd and short and 4th and short, but if you watched the games, we failed far too often.

Fortifying the interior of the offensive line could make a significant difference. The 2 OG’s that should start in ’25, LG James Daniels and rookie RG Jonah Savaiinaea should enable this offense to run inside the tackles as well as outside, where we spent too much time the last season. If you want to convert short yardage plays you must get push in the middle. You can’t expect your RB to have to go all the way to the outer perimeter of the O-line, it takes too long and gives the defense too much time. You need the shortest distance from point A to point B, which is pretty much straight ahead. The Dolphins also brought in a very physical blocking TE in Pharoah Brown, and we’ll likely be seeing a lot of 2 TE formations with Jonnu Smith and Pharoah Brown. Jonnu Smith was great last season as a receiving TE and will continue in that role, but Brown can mix it up in the trenches and will help in those short yardage situations.

The defense last season was somewhat of a pleasant surprise. Then, new Defensive Coordinator Anthony Weaver had the unit getting better and better as the season went on. RDE Zach Sieler had a great season finishing with 10 sacks for the 2nd year in a row. Having veteran Calais Campbell last year helped a lot, he played all 17 games and played well all season. Calais Campbell has moved on but the Dolphins added two players who should make an immediate impact. In the 1st RD, the Dolphins took Michigan DT Kenneth Grant. Grant has the ability to play multiple spots on the D-line, an odd front which be our base 3-4, or an even front in passing situations like the nickel or dime. He’ll probably be found somewhere in the interior but can and will play DT/DE like Calais Campbell did last season. We also drafted what could be a steal in the 5th RD DT Jordan Phillips. He can also play multiple spots and surely will be counted on to do so this season. Last year we got a nice rookie performance from 2024 1st RD pick OLB Chop Robinson. He just got better and better and I’m sure the Dolphins are counting on him to pick up where he left off. To add, we lost OLB Jaelan Phillips to a knee injury last season, the 2nd season in a row where Phillips missed significant time. He should be back healthy, no one rehabs better than Jaelan Phillips, he’s a monster! We will also see the return of OLB Bradley Chubb who missed the entire ’24 season. Anthony Weaver probably can’t wait to see this whole group together, it really could be fun!

One thing the Dolphins have to do is figure out the Jalen Ramsey situation one way or another. They can’t let this situation linger, either he’s here, or he’s gone. If we’re going to move on from Ramsey, hopefully it’s a trade. I’ve seen rumors of trades regarding other teams who have similar situations on their hands, so maybe a disgruntled player swap with Green Bay Packers CB Jaire Alexander is possible. No Ramsey is older, and his salary is a little less than Alexander’s. Ramsey’s cap hit in ’25 is $16.6M while Alexander’s is $23.9M. This may not be feasible, or realistic but the Dolphins may need to find 2 starting CB’s if they can’t work things out with Ramsey and keep him, or trade him. They don’t really have a starting CB on the roster, but there are some available players who are Free Agents like Rasul Douglas and a younger player in Asante Samuel Jr. . Douglas is nearly 30 but we could a short contract. Samuel is only 25, but has a shoulder issue. If he can pass a medical, it would be nice to have some young talent but his contract will be steep. We have CB’s Storm Duck and Cam Smith who have started but were shaky. To add, we have two safeties that have started games during their careers, but between SS Ifeatu Melifonwu and FS Ashtyn Davis, they’ve only started 9 games total over the last 3 seasons. The secondary needs to be remedied if we’re truly going to be contenders.

Back to the offense for a moment. Last season, we inexplicably relied way too heavily on RB De’Von Achane. We drafted and traded up for RB Jaylen Wright in RD 4, using a 2025 3rd RD pick to do so. Wright should be seeing a lot more action, and in this 2025 Draft, we selected RB Ollie Gordon in RD 6. Gordon, 6’1 226 has a much more physical style and mentality rushing the football. He could help in the aforementioned short yardage struggles we’ve had. We also brought in WR Nick Westbrook-Ikhine into our WR room and he should be a welcome addition. Much like Gordon, Ikhine-Westbrook brings some size to the room at 6’2 211, much larger and more physical than Hill and Waddle and should be a nice big target as well. Westbrook-Ikhine had 9 TD’s receptions last season, 1 more than Hill-Waddle combined. He’s a great red zone threat receiver, I look forward to watching him here in Miami. Of course, the heavy lifting belong to the O-line and our QB Tua Tagovailoa. Tua needs to stay healthy and play smart. Playing smart doesn’t mean playing in bubble wrap, but it means when you’re running outside the pocket, don’t engage a defender, slide. When a defender is making a b-line to you, throw the ball away and don’t hold it and get crushed. That doesn’t mean never take a few yards if the defense gives you running room and there’s no receiver open, it just means run out of bounds or slide to finish the run.

Yes, a lot of things have to break right for us to unseat the AFC EAST CHAMPION Buffalo Bills. We also have to contend with better New England Patriots and NY Jets teams. Fix the secondary and the Jalen Ramsey situation, and even more importantly, learn how to use your rookies and let them help you win. We know Kenny Grant and Jonah Savaiinaea will be used heavily, but use Jordan Phillips a lot, use Ollie Gordon, use Zeek Biggers,. Don’t avoid using rookies you drafted! It’s possible that this year’s defensive unit could be special if both Bradley Chubb and Jalean Phillips can stay healthy, along with 2nd year OLB Chop Robinson. If the big boys are good on the D-line, and the LB’s can get to the QB, the CB and Safety situation may not seem so dire. QB Tua Tagovailoa in addition to playing smart with his health needs to find another level of play. He has to be better against the good teams, teams as good or better than us. This is something he’s struggled with since he’s been here, but if he wants this team to succeed, he has to find another gear., and help this team beat hose teams and win those important showdowns. Do it during the regular season will make it easier to do in the playoffs too.

there’s talk about Kohou starting outside, that would be Ok, but in nickel he needs to be the nickelback IMO

    Jason Marshall Jr, 6’1, 205
    BJ Adams, 6’3, 190
    Isaiah Johnson, 6’3, 205 (2024 UDFA)

Those are some big press corners. I wonder if Weaver is looking to change some things up in coverage. Though, it will depend on who makes the roster and who starts on the boundaries.

With good health and the potential on the team we can be a very good team. Not sure why that’s viewed as being overly optimistic. The roster has potential. If we had no talent I’d say so.

locker room is my main concern right now, not sure we can overcome it

key will be to win early, if not MM doesn’t last the year Tyreek traded at the trade deadline

I think it’s more likely that things go wrong than they go right, because there’s just too many things that have to go right that usually don’t.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Injury issues to overcome, injury issues to avoid, lack of talent in the secondary, rookie OL has to play at a high level right now, other teams in the division got better than us. Might be too much to ask to overcome, but this is what Grier created, and if we suck, he deserves to be vanquished.

  6. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

M13, you seem to want a fire sale? Why? Do you like the sport or the TMZ nonsense of owner, GM and head coach?

    What are we following anymore?

We’ve made the playoffs 4 times since 2008. 16, 22 and 23. One off year and it’s off with your heads. Grier and McDaniel have never had a losing record together. Yet the mob is out to get them like they’re some kind of monster.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Tim, I certainly do not WANT a fire sale… like you, I want us to WIN!

I’m merely putting my finger to the wind, and I see Ross firing the FO if we can’t even make the playoffs this season… but maybe keeping Chris Grier.

Even you, man, would have to admit that it’s time for a fire sale if we have a losing record at the trade deadline, in order to entice a new GM and/or HC.

Rightfully or wrongfully, we both understand that the life of an NFL GM and HC don’t last very long if the current situation isn’t good. It’s more about “what have you done for me lately?” in this sick society we live in today.

      I’m not anti-Grier (perhaps I should be) or anti-McDaniel. However, I AM anti-Ross.

I’ve got a LOT to say about this matter (non-Dolphins), and it makes me sick. It’s a biz, Bro. It’s abysmal.

        I don’t expect a losing season. I think we’re better than that.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I give you ALL the respect in the world for your optimism! And to be honest… YES. I also see a winning season ahead of us… so long as we don’t incur too many injuries.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Sadly, YES… we’re probably going to incur many injuries.

    • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

There won’t really be a fire sale. Tyreek is gone next year regardless because of his contract. Very likely Chubb also for the same reason.

If we have a poor record by the trade deadline, I would not be surprised if we moved on from Hill. Hill would be cheap for a team trading for him for the rest of the season.

I do think MM should be on a very hot seat if he continues to not be able to adjust during games.

Tyreek Hill Not Showing Familiar Support for Tua in Ranking Elite QBs

Hill has consistently placed Tua among the league’s best quarterbacks, but changed his tune during a Snapchat video Monday.

Dante Collinelli | 15 Hours Ago

Tyreek Hill is causing a stir on social media again.

The Miami Dolphins’ star receiver was asked to name his top five quarterbacks in the NFL during a Q&A session on Snapchat, and he left out Tua Tagovailoa. Instead, Hill cited Lamar Jackson, Josh Allen, Patrick Mahomes, Baker Mayfield and Joe Burrow.

While this is not a big deal, it is an odd pivot from Hill, who has gone out of his way to include Tagovailoa in such discussions in the past. It also comes amid an offseason in which Hill has been in the news for all the wrong reasons.

    Hill’s Past Support of Tua

When the Dolphins traded for Hill, the star wide receiver was not shy about supporting Tagovailoa. In June of 2022, he famously claimed that Tagovailoa was the most accurate quarterback in the NFL on the podcast “It Needed to Be Said.”

“Obviously, like I’m gonna go with 15 [Patrick Mahomes] as the strongest arm, but as far as accuracy-wise, I’m going with Tua all day,” Hill said.

Hill doubled down on this take throughout his time in Miami, consistently saying Tagovailoa was the NFL’s most accurate passer.

Even as recently as January, Hill was hyping up his starting quarterback. He was doing a “blind ranking” on Facebook, and he ranked Tua first. A blind ranking means Hill wasn’t ranking the quarterbacks solely based on his opinions, but he still defaulted to putting Tua first.

Regardless of the semantics surrounding Hill’s ranking method, his omission of Tua from his list is a significant change.

nor has Tua ever been top 5, but that wasn’t why it was brought up

Tyreek has previously had Tua in his top 5, taking him out this time, because of the rift between them

  20. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Tim – Saw your response about Soto. Productive? The guy behind him (Alonso) has just 1 less run scored than Soto. Starling Marte who has played in 12 less games and has less than half the AB’s Soto has has only 2 less RBI’s. You might be the most “accepting”, look at the bright side guy I have ever seen. We’re not paying Soto $765M to hit .258 with 5 HR’s and 14 RBI’s in 36 games. I fully understand that his presence alone makes the lineup better, Alonso will be happy to testify to that, but he needs to start hitting.

    • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Are teams pitching around him? It happens, and Soto may not be seeing what he likes causing him to struggle at the plate a little. Next thing you know they snap out of if and start seeing everything better then go off. Wait until by the end of May.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Pitchers are being careful, but he gets pitches to hit. I think he’s just being too patient, willing to give Alonso the opportunity. Right now Pete is killing it, but if he starts to struggle, Soto will have to start hitting or the Mets will fade fast

It was odd reading this Bizzaro world article. She at least THREE times refers to Ewer’s Deep ball accuracy and his powerful arm….

Every other evaluation I read on the kid said the exact opposite. He has good short and mid range accuracy but is BAD at the deep ball. (other evaluators comments not mine)

So as of today, we have roughly $17.3M of cap space spending $$$ (per Spotrac). Unless the rules have changed yet again (I can’t keep up with it, FFS), each team is able to rollover $10M in unspent cap savings.

Going along with my “MANDATE” theory (to make it more enticing for the next potential GM and/or HC), that could translate to only $7.3M in cap space spending… until June 2nd.

Mind you, it’s only a theory… not a hypothesis. I’m VERY interested to see what happens next!

So Omar Kelly comes on the Joe Rose Show this morning as he often does and tells Joe the Dolphins are in a soft rebuild. He goes on to explain that they’ve been doing things one way for 3 years, like spending crazy money on players, giving out extensions, trading away draft capital etc, but now they’ve clearly made a change. I know some of you here think this behavior means they’re safe and will be here next season.

I have used this term here for a while now, Grier and MM need to be Responsible Stewards of the Franchise. I think someone in this organization put their foot down and told them Enough! Omar calls it a soft rebuild, the term itself doesn’t matter as much as the actions do. Trading a draft pick in this draft for a future pick. That’s the opposite of what they do here, or have been doing here. I don’t think Grier and MM are safe, and either does Omar.

Now this doesn’t mean we’re done this season, but as I’ve been saying, it’s gonna take an awful lot of things to right to give us a chance. If things go south here, I think it’s a pretty safe bet that Grier and MM are both gone.

Home games are typically easier games in the season, but this season our home schedule looks much tougher than our away schedule. Dolphins’ home opponents are much harder than their road rivals. The Dolphins play five teams at home that won double-digit games but only two road opponents (Buffalo and Pittsburgh) that won 10 or more games in 2024.

Hopefully, our home field advantage off-sets the better quality of our home opponents and leads to a better overall record this season. (Yes, as much as I want Grier gone, I am still rooting for as many wins as they can get this season!)

  43. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Travis Wingfield had a “hot take” on his pod cast today (yesterday) that our top three draft picks will all have more than 500 snaps this season (including Phillips, who he predicts will carve out a larger role for himself that you would expect for a 5th round guy.

  44. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I’d say Phillips gets that amount of PT by default and was such a great pick in an area of need

to say larger role than you’d expect is kind of retarded, for reason of see paragraph 1

look at PP last year, 2nd rounder didn’t play much, he was drafted to replace Armstead in 2025

in other words he’s not comparing apples to apples

  45. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

talk about OL better than last year always seems to come down to Armstead for some reason, maybe Randy can weigh in

my theory is your OL is only as good as your worst player

you can look at it 2 ways for a running play Armstead makes a great block to jettison Achane or Eichenberg misses a block and Tua is sacked

on the running play what Eichenberg does may be irrelevant and on the passing play what Armstead does is irrelevant, sure there’s some things that can be done by Armstead to pick up a free rusher, but it could also be mostly irrelevant in this instance

bottom line was Armstead better than Jones and Eichenberg were bad, i don’t think so

    WTF, people are so stupid.

A Sheduer Sanders fan is suing the NFL for $100 million for “emotional damage and trauma” over Sanders’ slide down in the draft.

“The Plaintiff claims that the reports and “leaked statements” suggesting that Sanders “tanked interviews,” “wasn’t prepared” and “was too cocky” in the pre-draft process helped create a narrative that “unjustly harmed” his reputation. These “slanderous statements” caused “emotional distress and trauma to the Plaintiff as a fan and consumer.”

Cowboys should have waited on the Pickens trade. I wonder if he ends up back in Buffalo.

WR Gabe Davis has been released by the Jaguars after one season, the team announced. • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Miami Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill underwent an operation on his wrist, according to a post to his Snapchat account, marking his second procedure this offseason.

Hill had his wrist surgically repaired earlier this offseason after playing through what Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel described as a ligament issue. Hill’s most recent surgery involved the removal of previously placed screws, a source told ESPN, and has been “the plan all along.”

  49. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

In their continued search for bulky run-stuffers on their defensive front, the Dolphins have added a fifth 300-plus pound rookie defensive lineman.

Tre’vonn Rybka, a productive defensive lineman at Kentucky, agreed to a deal as an undrafted rookie that included $10,000 guaranteed, according to a source. He becomes the 16th undrafted rookie to sign with the Dolphins; none had been announced as of midday Wednesday.

Rybka, who is listed at 6-4 and 310 pounds, played in 48 games and started 25 times in four seasons with the Wildcats. He had 95 tackles (including 11.5 for loss), five sacks and a forced fumble.

He started all 12 games last season and finished with 34 tackles (including five for loss), three sacks and a forced fumble.

The Dolphins have added five defensive linemen through the draft process — first-round pick Kenneth Grant (the 6-4, 331-pound Michigan product is a likely rookie starter), fifth-round pick Jordan Phillips (the former Maryland player is 6-2, 312 pounds), seventh-round pick Zeek Biggers (the 321-pound tackle from Georgia Tech), Rybka and undrafted South Carolina rookie Alex Huntley.

  50. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

    on Zeek Biggers;

With an 85.5-inch wingspan, Biggers topped the charts at the 2025 NFL Scouting Combine. Only one other player (Texas defensive tackle Alfred Collins) measured within an inch (85 inches) of Biggers’ pterodactyl length.

    Field goal block specialist

Clogging double teams, making tackles behind the line of scrimmage and batting down passes are all essential skills of a massive defensive tackle. For Biggers, his length helps in the kicking game as well.

Nobody blocked more field goals across college football the last four seasons than Biggers, who averaged one per season.

His first job as the head of the unit was in 2016 with the Los Angeles Chargers. That lasted one year. Aukerman then joined the Titans, who, in his second year, promoted him to special teams coordinator. He held that position from 2018 to 2023 but was fired midway through the season and sat out 2024.

Tennessee’s special teams struggled before his departure. In Week 13 of the 2023 season, his unit gave up two blocked punts to the Indianapolis Colts. The Titans fired him the next day.

Unfortunately, his overall results in Tennessee were underwhelming.

    The Titans under his watch landed on Rick Gosselin’s annual special teams rankings at;

    16th – 2018, 18th – 2019, 24th- 2020, 19th- 2021, 14th 2022, 21st – 2023 until he was fired week 13 after his unit gave up two blocked punts in one game.

  75. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Bleacher Report ranked the top 12 QB’s in the NFL. Tua was #12. I think that is fair.

I alluded to the “eyeball” test, which is that “it” factor we can’t really quantify. Tua Tagovailoa is lucky that’s not all I relied on here, because he wouldn’t make the cut under those circumstances.

The 27-year-old continues to face major questions about his ability to stay healthy as well as his lack of clutch performances.

The Dolphins were only 1-5 against playoff teams in 2023, and the offense was significantly less productive than usual in those games.

Tagovailoa was also startlingly ineffective in a first-round playoff loss to the Kansas City Chiefs. And in 2024, he again missed more than a handful of games and struggled in key spots against the Bills in September (three interceptions) and the Texans in December (four turnovers).

That said, we’re still talking about the reigning NFL leader in qualified completion percentage with the second-best on-target rate in the league. He is a 2020 top-five pick who has also led the league in passing yards, yards per attempt and passer rating at earlier points in his career.

When on, he can be one of the most efficient and productive passers in the NFL, so we’re giving him one more year on the fringe of this list.

I would probably take Matthew Stafford over him right now, and Bo Nix and others over him if I were starting a franchise and had a choice, but the former is too far past his prime and other recent high picks aren’t accomplished enough yet.

Tagovailoa is in a sweet spot, but he’s on thin ice entering what is likely the most critical season of his NFL career.

MikeE, I agree. We have both Washington’s and Eskridge. We added 2 promising UDFA slot WR’s in Theo Wease and AJ Henning. Both of who many thought would get drafted late. I think Armstrong and Baldwin are boundary guys.

On top of that, our TE’s line up in slot quite often, mainly Jannu with 232 snaps in the slot last year. Before Jannu got here though, in 2023 Smythe lined up in the slot even more at 260 snaps.

I am not worried about our slot WR position.

if Ikhine plays outside Tyreek moves to the slot in 3 WR sets, a lot probably, which will open up the deep ball again for Waddle

This was from a hearld article a few years back.

In 2021 with the Kansas City Chiefs, 49 percent of Hill’s snaps came from a slot or tight alignment and 50 percent of his snaps came from a wide alignment, according to ESPN’s Next Gen Stats. Hill remained productive wherever he lined up, though. He averaged 11.57 yards per catch from a wide alignment and 11.65 yards from the slot. Hill’s average separation per reception was 4.18 yards from both a wide and slot alignment, given credence to Hill’s statement after Saturday’s practice that he’s an “outside receiver.”

For Waddle, 52 percent of his 2021 snaps came from the slot or a tight alignment and 52 percent of his targets were from the slot, as opposed to 41 percent from a wide alignment.

  93. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

According to the website Player Profile he took 176 snaps or 22% from the slot last season. 118 in 2023, and 122 in 2022 and a whopping 379 snaps from the slot as a rookie!

  94. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Last season Jonnu had 227 snaps from the slot.

Last season Nick Westbrook-Ikhine ran 20% of his routes from the slot (158) in 2023 he ran 46.1% of his snaps from the slot (280)

I think that dude who wrote the article is clearly just writing SHIT to have SOMETHING to post.
