Why Dolphins??? Why???

I know there are those of you that will do just about anything to find the positives about this front office and team, and organization, but for crying out loud, WHY?????? There was one player other than the electric De’Von Achane who made this offense that was stuck in the mud the entire 2024 season go, that was TE Jonnu Smith. Jonnu caught 88 passes last season. If you watched the games like I did, you know many of those passes were screens and short dump offs, he averaged 10.0 YPR, but also achieved a 5.8 YAC average, a little more than half his YPR, which tells you how much work he had to do to get that 10.0 yards per reception. Naturally, like most athletes in the NFL, Jonnu wants to be rewarded for his great play last season and his efforts. Why then, do we need to hear that we’re looking to trade him to the Pittsburgh Steelers? Supposedly we could get up to a 3rd RD pick for Jonnu? Splendid! We could potentially then draft yet another OL in RD 2 and we can use that 3rd RD pick to trade up to get him! Oh the excitement in Dolphins Land!

I don’t know what it’s take for those of you who continue to bushy tailed and bright eyes at what we’re doing here. I think it’s a damn disgrace what we’re doing. I’m not going to rehash everything as I’ve done countless times, but you have to get tired of the negativity, that THEY provide. Sure, I’m writing about it, but it’s not me supplying the negativity, THEY do! Does anyone here remember exactly how many TD’s we had from our TE room in 2023? If you forgot, we had Z-E-R-O!! Yes, we had the most explosive offense in the NFL, but what happened when we played tough teams? We fell apart. Having that big bodied receiver that fights for yards after the catch is a wonderful thing to have when your receivers are all smaller, faster guys and don’t provide that type of physicality, RB De’Von Achane included. Jonnu gave us 8 TD’s receiving last season, and a few of them were ridiculous rugby scrum TD’s where he fought his way into the end zone We have no idea what type of impact Jonnu could have made in 2023 because he wasn’t here.

It’s just so difficult to feel like this front office has a plan. They just react (poorly) to everything that comes their way. They extend Jalen Ramsey, he has issues with the HC just a few months later and we air our dirty laundry for the entire NFL to see. Gee, that oughta help us get more in return if we trade our disgruntled player whom this front office just keeps throwing $$$ at. Now we have a good soldier who just wants more than the meager 2YR/$4.8M contract that his play easily exceeded. I don’t love when players sign contracts and then ask for more money but if anyone has a legit case, Jonnu does. So even in a best case scenario, we get a 3rd RD pick for next season, do you really want Chris Grier at GM to use that extra pick?

So, now we sit and wait and watch another good player leave the roster. There’s absolutely nothing positive about trading Jonnu Smith for draft picks if Chris Grier is still going to be here, nothing! We just lose another player and give a guy who can’t play a draft board another pick to to use frivolously. It’s a damn shame if that’s how this goes. We have no one in this TE room that could do what Jonnu does. Yes, WR Nick Westbrook-Ikhine had a bunch of TD receptions, but why not have both of these guys and see what they can do together? Who knows, maybe we’re able to come to an agreement on a responsible and fair contract extension for Jonnu, that would be ideal. He is going to be 30 when the season begins (we share the same birthday, August 22nd). Travis Kelce has played very well and only recently seems to be really falling off, but he’s 35, so giving Jonnu another year or 2 and more money would be far from irresponsible. I’d love to see that happen, let’s hope for the best, but expect the worst! That’s how we roll here in Miami!

Take a deep breath and read this

The Fins have had trade conversations with Pit about J. Smith

    (New Sentence)

    J. Smith has asked about a contract extension.

    (New Sentence)

    J. Smith would like to stay in Miami with an extension.

If you don’t read that as a run on sentence, it’s just normal contract negotiations / offseason stuff.

All 3 can be true and completely separate!

they’ve been in talks for a while, Grier is snake bitten over what happen last year with Ramsey and Tyreek getting new money

Darnell Washington would be that all around TE, that MM covers, he hasn’t really hit the ground running in the NFL, he’d be a risk

Jonnu fits perfectly with Tua, short passes with YAC, so of course bad grief wants to trade him

  6. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Wyo – Jonnu wanting a new contract and more money is normal off season stuff. Grier talking to the Steelers about a trade is abnormal. Can’t that Fuck keep it in house and take care of business properly? Why is he making calls to clubs? The same leaks happened with Ramsey. These leaks don’t benefit the team trying to trade the player if it comes to that, so why leak it?

  7. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

An article from Dolphins Talk said the Dolphins should trade Jannu if the offer is a 3rd or 4th round pick. Their reasoning is Jannu only played 55% of offensive snaps due to his lack of blocking ability.

I look at it differently. That kind of production playing only 55% of snaps shows how big of a weapon he is and how valuable he is to the offense.

  8. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Wyo – then shop the one fucking player you should be shopping because he’s killing your cap and your team. Tua!!!

    Adam Schefter

    @AdamSchefter

The Dolphins have had trade discussions with the Pittsburgh Steelers about their lone Pro-Bowl selection last season, tight end Jonnu Smith, per league sources. Those talks came after Smith expressed an interest in reworking his deal that is scheduled to pay him $4.8 million this season. With Smith seeking a new contract, Miami has sought a trade partner. Last season, Smith set the franchise record for a tight end in receptions, receiving yards and touchdowns. Smith’s preference, per sources, is to stay in Miami under a reworked deal.

Now, another TE on the trading block. It’s being reported that “teams” are contacting the Falcons about Kyle Pitts who has never lived up to his draft status.

He comes way too expensive as he is playing on his 5th year option at 10.9m.

  11. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Just wonder if Grier made this public after hearing teams talking to the Falcons about trading for Kyle Pitts.

Maybe Steelers didn’t want to give up what Grier was asking for. So, Grier goes public to let those teams know he has a better option than Pitts.

    Probably just reaching.

    Mike E,

Nice write and I 100% agree with ya on the Jonnu Smith situation. So IF Jonnu gets traded for another pick in ’26, our Draft cupboard will be overflowing… at the cost of having an abysmal ’25 season.

I’d say Coach McD is getting setup for failure in’25, he’ll be fired, and our Draft cupboard will be too enticing for a new HC in ’26… an established HC.

IMO, Chris Grier is in on this betrayal and he’ll remain our GM in ’26 and beyond. I suspect team brass has something on Coach McD and he has little to no say on what goes down in terms of personnel.

So why don’t they just fire McD now? They want McD to be the fall guy for an abysmal season in a ‘soft tank’ for a better pick in ’26… to trade up for one of the darling QBs.

I’m not going to run with this as a hypothesis or a ‘conspiracy theory’, but it sure as hell looks that way to me right now from the outside looking in.

If it were up to me, I’d give Jonnu an honest raise without over-paying him. We have a fighting chance on Offense WITH Jonnu this season. Without him, I feel we’re just mailing this season in on Offense, HOPING we did enough on the O-Line to open up the running game… in an effort to HOPEFULLY end 2-deep Safeties against ‘Reek & Da’ Penguin.

If that plan backfires, we NEED Jonnu.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Ikhine makes Jonnu a less important part of our O, with hopefully a better OL more targets should go to Hill/Waddle lessening further the need for a non-blocking TE

if we pay him 10m what is Sieler and Brooks going to say? What about me

they really need to reverse the precedent set last year giving these guys more money

in Jonnu’s situation he needs to be compensated by what he will do this year and not what he did last year, no scenario I can fathom has him duplicating 2024

    ————-

I think this is a very well thought out post, Steve. The only response I have for that is IF everything goes according to plan regarding our running game… alleviating 2-deep Safeties all day… then we probably won’t need Jonnu.

Even the best-laid plans can become futile if… let’s say a guy or two gets injured. Oh, it WILL HAPPEN, because we’re the Dolphins! LOL

Having Jonnu on the team is almost akin to having flood insurance. You think you probably won’t need it, but when you drop it, then it’s going to flood.

I hear ya on ‘what would Sieler and Brooks say?’, and about Jonnu not replicating his ’24 performance should ‘Reek & Da’ Penguin replicate their ’22 and ’23 performances… along with our RBs.

We still need to sign a vet CB (IMO), I’d like a decent starting S, and I still want a vet Guard as insurance on the O-Line… paying Jonnu more $$$ could compromise getting this accomplished.

It’s very unfortunate this whole Jonnu issue has surfaced… I’m not sure what to do now.

  26. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

And as mentioned previously, teams are looking at trading for Kyle Pitts… who like Jonnu Smith, is another former Arthur Smith player.

Is it just me, or is the NFL actively trying to destroy our Phins??? For instance, if Pitts is valued as a 3rd round pick, that most assuredly that drops the value of Jonnu. Why? Because Pitts is that much younger than Jonnu and he’s a former 1st round Draft pick.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

It’s a funkin’ dick move to lower the value of Jonnu… coming right off the heels of the Jonnu news.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

As Rockphin stated earlier, there’s no doubt that an agent leaked this stuff in order to capitalize on the situation. There are no coincidences.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

In any normal season, I would say the Steelers would in no way, shape or form entertain trading away a pick to get a skill player. This season, they did very unlike the Steelers way trade for DK Metcalf, and I’m guessing sooner than later they’re going to sign Kirk Cousins. All a very a different approach from business as usual for the Steelers, so I can’t completely discount that they would potentially make a deal for a TE that could help them now. Jonnu > Kyle Pitts at this very moment.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

The Stealers* may be trying to entice A-Rod to sign with them by upgrading at TE… and that includes either of Jonnu or Pitts. Either way, I don’t like it as it pertains to us.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

And remember… Kirk Cousins is still a member of the Falcons. The Stealers* would have to TRADE for him, unless he’s outright released.

      • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Falcons won’t release Cousins. They would take an extra 10m cap hit this year. Trading him will clear 27.5m. That’s a 37.5m difference.

I watched Melifonwu and Ashtyn review from Ryder again, both seem to fit what Weaver wants to do

We had roughly zero ints last year, we bring in Ashtyn to help with that, Melifonwu is a big 6’3″ safety that can cover TEs and can blitz and tackle, his issue is health, think between McMorris and Trader we’ll be OK, if he should get hurt

Don’t think it’s a stretch to think we’re better at S, than what played out last year, also bigger and more physical, which should help against playoff teams

changing the culture to bigger/stronger players can only help change the late season collapsess and playoff drought, should we get there

we may suck this year, we won’t be following the same lame duck path, either way win/lose in the standings it’s a win

This world is getting scarier and scarier every day. Over the last 24 hours… Russia allegedly suffered their own “Pearl Harbor” at the hand of Ukraine drone strikes (so much for peace talks, the retaliation will be horrific), the NYT is alleging Iran now possesses roughly 10 nuclear ICBMs, and what looks to be a terror attack today in Boulder, Colorado (fire bombing of protesters).

Not a good last 24 hours to be a living being on the 3rd rock from the sun.

Our Dolphins had better get it together before the ‘fireworks phase’ of WW3 reigns down.

Pete Prisco from CBS Sports was on the Joe Rose Show this morning. He said the Dolphins are the worst team in their division this year. Joe asked him about the perception of the Dolphins that they’re soft, and Pete says he hears it all around the NFL, from other teams fans and other teams players too. They’re regarded as a soft team. That’s the deal, and until they do something that says otherwise, that’s what they are

  63. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

“Here’s what I will say on behalf of my client: Jonnu would definitely like to stay in Miami,” Rosenhaus said on WSVN-7. “That’s his first choice. This is where he lives in the off-season. He had a record-breaking season last year.

“It was the best season ever for a Miami Dolphin tight end… He broke the team record for receptions, receiving yards and touchdowns for a tight end and was the team’s single Pro Bowl player. He’s an incredibly valuable part of this team… He went to college at FIU. His dream team is the Dolphins.

“Hopefully, everything works out where he can stay in Miami.”

Well, he is under contract so there is no “hope” involved you dirty fuck stick!

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

      • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

he is NOT a perfect fit in Miami. He is just the best receiving TE we have had in a while.

A perfect fit would be someone who can block as well. That is not him.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Perfect fit for him, where else is he going to have the field open, because the safeties are laying back doubling Hill/Waddle?

      • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

my statement stands. He is not a perfect fit. Miami WANTS a TE that can block in the pass and run games, not just a big WR.

I am sure he wanted to give it a go on another run to a SB. Like Armstead, the mind and heart is there but the body just won’t hold up.

Ragnow has been a beast and played through some tough injuries every year the last 6 years.

2019 Ankle injury and concussion, still played 99% of snaps

2020 Fractured throat, still played 100% of snaps

2021 Turf Toe, played 79% of snaps

2022 Turf Toe, ankle injury, groin injury, calf injury, back injury and knee injury, but still played 99% of snaps (1074 snaps)

2023 Ankle injury, still played 96% snaps

2024 Torn pectoral muscle, still played 97% snaps

The dude is a true warrior for pushing through 2022 alone. MM would of had him on IR several times.

While I will agree with the material substance (?) of this article, I believe it flows from….

    https://dolphinstalk.com/2025/06/qualities-of-a-championship-team/

The article lists 3, so here are mine.

….Top down: Strong leadership is most important, starting at the top dog on the field, the coach. Who then finds talented field generals (players) who keep their units “in line with teaching and example….lol…I can’t think of one leader on this team that fits that description. OH MY!

Team chemistry: You can build a championship team without the proper ingredients/mixture AND without strong leadership, chemistry will never happen. You’re just stirring the pot, and hoping for the best. That’s CGs motto…lol. Piece here, piece there, don’t need to develop/keep our own. It’s closer to a concoction than a recipe…let’s see what happens….lol.

Talent: You need as many of the best players you can get, starters to bench, to have a chance IF you have the first two above. Well, on a positive note, we have some talent at most skill positions, but hardly any depth to live by “the next man up” philosophy….which I completely agree with the article.

Lol….some early morning random thoughts on building a championship team.

being older than dirt has its drawbacks

Now we have a good soldier who just wants more than the meager 2YR/$4.8M contract that his play easily exceeded.

    • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Steve, it was a two year 8.4M contract. He is scheduled to get 4.8 this season only. I know we are talking NFL salaries so 4.8 M is “peanuts” but it is more than many many many will ever see in a lifetime of hard work.

It’s not like he is getting vet minimum. He is #32 out of 173 Tight Ends in the league.

I am so sick of players when they have ONE GOOD YEAR wanting to tear up the contract they are playing on and get a new one.

  77. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Rock – He’s 30 years old, he had a monster career year. I hate all that stuff too but he wants to stay here and just get a more commensurate salary. By all accounts he’s a great guy, not a diva or a douche. I think it’s all relative to the situation. We can say no and then that will be it, but he’s the type of player you want here though.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Agreed. Like Rock has said recently, the agents drive this stuff.

    • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Yeah, sucks for him that he has been a mediocre tight end his entire career EXCEPT for this past season. ONE YEAR does not make a 30 year old player great. He is getting paid a commensurate salary and is under contract for this season.

If he and scum bag Rosenhous want more money have a great season this year and he can get as much as he can in FA next season. (it wont be much more than he is getting on the FA market, BET)

  78. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

    Hill wants 2000 yards

Waddle wants to get back over 1000 yards again

    Achane wants 1000 yard receiving

We picked up Nick Westbrook-Ikhine as a red zone threat

We picked up Andrew Armstrong (6’4″ 202)

We have Tarik Black (6’3″ 213)

EZE is still on the sqaud

The two washingtons (Malik & Tahj) are on the squad

Theo Wease Jr (6’2 210) got picked up

Those are a lot of mouths to feed for a team that is going to focus on the running game….

We need a TE who can block out there on most plays.

Smith can want all day in one hand and shit in the other and see which hand fills up first… JMO

  80. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

    — Edge rusher Grayson Murphy had 3.0 sacks Tuesday. Murphy sacks on consecutive plays in 11-on-11. On the first he put a nice move past Larry Borom. The play resulted in an interception by safety Iffy Melinfonwu. The second play he moved past guard Braeden Daniels. His third sack came in a late-practice 11-on-11 play

Our pass rush may very well be good AND deep this season!

  81. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

That would be a good thing because our secondary looks very suspect…

    — Cornerback Cam Smith, who needs to make an impact, bit on a double move during 7-on-7s. Smith had a low-key performance Tuesday.

    • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

      — Wide receiver Dee Eskridge blew past cornerback Isaiah Johnson for a 35-yard gain on a deep pass in 11-on-11s. The cornerbacks had a rough day even though wide receiver Jaylen Waddle didn’t run many plays.

  82. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

    — Tight end Tanner Conner, one of the most knowledgeable and athletic players on the team, had a nice 25-yard reception from Wilson in 7-on-7. Conner has an opportunity to emerge with Smith absent while in a contract dispute.

As far as Jannu goes, that’s a tough call for me. We need to clear some cap next year without having to screw with Tua’s contract. Giving Jannu extension and paying top 10 money might hurt a little as we currently sit at -1.8m in 2026 cap. That said, Jalin Conyers is the only TE under contract next year.

I would say, give him a 1yr extension that will give him a little more money this year and still keep his 2026 cap hit reasonable. Put in some nonguaranteed incentives for 2026 that wouldn’t affect the cap until 2027.

Tidbits from Ryder that he got from various media outlets.

Zack Wilson threw a pick but it was a tipped ball. Reported that he looked good and comfortable all day.

Safety Davis had his 2nd INT of OTA’s

    Grayson Murphy was on fire.

Chop Robinson wore the orange jersey, Tua did the day prior.

WR Eskridge is really standing out so far but it’s still early. He caught another deep shot and has been making tough catches every OTA.

UDFA WR AJ Henning is standing out also.

Wright had a run on a well blocked play that would have been a 70 yard TD.

The communication on pre and post snap rotations on defense have been almost flawless. Everyone seems to be on same page on defense already. Big part of that is from the leadership of Darth Kader. Artie Burns was also mentioned.

  93. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Interesting. We had an Indiana legendary coach in HS. We ran the wishbone and maybe only passed 10-12 times a game. Still, my coach would have the WR’s, TE’s and RB’s show up in the gym 15 minutes early before every practice to juggle tennis balls to work on our hand eye coordination.

Don’t hear about it because doesn’t seem like much but it’s the first time in a long time I have heard players doing it. Waddle said that is what Miami’s new WR coach is having him do.

It works, I don’t think I can remember anyone ever dropping a pass in any of our games. I really think it helped me focus, catch the ball more cleanly and just snatch it out of the air.
