Pre Season Game 1 – Dolphins @ Bears

Not gonna lie, I’m legitimately excited to see some of our young guys play, and even some of the older guys too. I really didn’t think it would happen, as most of you know, I’m having a hard time being a fan of this team due to the current management, and the Head Coach. That being said, nothing could give me a jolt of enthusiasm more than to see some of our young players look like they can be NFL starters, potentially good ones! I expect there to be a certain amount of sloppiness, this is the first time many of the players we’ll see against Chicago getting their first televised game action and the big lights will be on, and that changes everything. It’s no longer just practice, and for some of these players, their performance in the 3 preseason games can be the difference between making the 53 and looking for a team to pick them up off of waivers.

We’re going to have a very young, unproven secondary, especially at the cornerback position. CB’s Storm Duck and Kendall Sheffield may be the boundary corners, while veteran Mike Hilton will be in the nickel. There are a few other CB’s who would love nothing more to not only win a roster spot but to steal a starting job. I believe that’s very possible here, it’s certainly written in pencil or chalk at this point and can easily be erased. Jack Jones who was with the Patriots and Raiders and now his third team going into his 4th year kind of needs to grab a starting spot and perform or he may never be considered for a starting spot anywhere. CB Ethan Bonner who always gets buzz in training camp needs to do more than that and make some plays with the lights on and get noticed. 2025 5th RD Pick CB Jason Marshall needs to make things happen to move up the depth chart and get a roster spot. It must feel like hell to be on a roster bubble, but sometimes stars are born when the pressure is on and the lights are on too.

The O-line right now is another are of concern and some positives. Already the depth will be tested with RT Austin Jackson OUT with a leg injury and his status for the regular season Game 1 is up in the air . OT Kion Smith has been here a while, and we have OL Liam Eichenberg who is the backup at every position on the O-line, as well as OL Larry Borom who is a backup at OG and OT. We also recently signed OT Germain Ifedi, so we have lots of bodies, but we need answers, one way or the other. Honestly, I can’t wait to see LT Patrick paul, although he may not play much against the Bears. Of course I want to see LG Jonah Savaiinaea and I want him to look like a beast. Not sure if james Daniels plays much either, but with him I just want to see that he’s healthy and moving well. C Aaron Brewer is also dealing with an injury, as is backup C Andrew Meyer. If it’s not Liam Eichenberg at C, your guess is as good as mine as to who else might play C, Daniel Brunskill, Addison West?

The front 7 is definitely going to be the strength of the defense, but that’s assuming our young players that we drafted get up to speed quickly. DT Zach Sieler got his well earned big payday, but next to him, big Benito Jones and 1st RD draft pick DT Kenneth Grant has to show quickly and be a force for us. The initial depth charts show us not working from the 3-4 base but I don’t think that’s necessarily a change in philosophy. I think we will try and put in some speed packages to get our best pass rushers on the field at the same time, but we will still operate from the base 3-4 which should feature RDE Zach Sieler, NT Benito Jones and LDE Kenneth Grant. At OLB depending upon the health of Jaelan Phillips and Bradely Chubb, those two probably start but I would expect to see an awful lot of 2nd year pass rusher Chop Robinson, and I mean a whole lotta Chop! The inside LB’s look as strong as I can remember with ILB’s Jordyn Brooks, Tyrel Dodson and Willie Gay and even KJ Britt. That’s a deep unit right there, and I haven’t even mentioned Channing Tindall. Back to OLB, Quinton Bell turned some heads again so maybe we see a little something from him and Cam Goode too. Mo Kamara might have a tough time making this roster.

At Safety, I think Minkah Fitzpatrick will be on the field the most, but who is with him again depends on health. Ashtyn Davis or Iffy Melifonwu will most likely be the other safety, and since it seems like Minkah will playing more of a centerfield role with us here in miami, Iffy Melifonwu is more of the SS type, but nothing is set in stone. We also drafted S Dante Trader and don’t forget about special teams ace Elijah Campbell who always impresses the coaches. I’m actually willing to give Minkah another chance, and I hope he surprises all of us by returning to his All Pro from back at his old position, not playing Strong Safety, and back with his old team. I’m sure the trade stung some, he’s a prideful fella, but having an All Pro season is the best message to send to Pittsburgh, as well as to become enamored by fans who weren’t necessarily sure if they liked the idea of him back in Aqua and Orange.

On offense, we have to stay healthy. I would expect RB De’Von Achane to see very little action, as well as QB Tua Tagovailoa. Besides, it’s really about the battle of the backups at both of those positions. At RB, it’s about 2nd year RB Jaylen Wright, veteran RB Alexander Mattison and 6th RD draft pick RB Ollie Gordon. At QB, there could be a dogfight for the backup spot with veteran QB Zach Wilson and rookie Quinn Ewers. Granted, Ewers faces an uphill battle because of who our starting QB is, Tua Tagovailoa and his tendency to get injured. Usually, you want a veteran back there, and last year’s hideous carousel of practice squad rejects was an embarrassment, but no more than relying on QB Skylar Thompson as the backup. Grier and McDaniel won’t get caught with their pants down this year so odds heavily favor QB Zach Wilson who has 33 NFL starts, and not the rookie 7th RD pick Quinn Ewers. Quinn Ewers though needs to show something for this team to carry him as the 3rd QB though, so he better up his game if he wants to be on the 53. The Dolphins could still elect to carry 3 QB’s if they like Ewers potential enough because if they put him on the PS, he’s as good as gone.

The WR spot will fun to see some good competition as well. Tyreek Hill won’t see much action if any, but I expect Jaylen Waddle to play some, and then someone needs to step up from the crowded WR room we have. We signed big WR Nick Westbrook-Ikhine early on in Fre Agency after his impressive ’24 season in which he caught 32 passes for nearly 500 yards (497) for a nice 15.5 YPR as well as a heady 9 receiving TD’s. With TE Jonnu Smith gone, it makes sense to think that Westbrook-Ikhine could steal some of those catches, and that it would be nice to have a bigger bodied WR (6’2 211) on the field. Besides NWI, there’s always impressive slot WR Malik Washington who I’m looking forward to seeing some growth from. I think he can be a nice dependable receiver that can find the soft spot and get open when Tyreek and Waddle get the double coverage. He’s quick and shifty and he could get his share of targets. Then there’s good ole Erik Ezukanma who wows and disappears in equal measures. He better do more of the former, because if it’s the latter, he may finally ended his tenure here in Miami. The other Washington, Tahj Washington also needs to shine to make the roster. There’s also Dee Eskrdige who was a 2nd RD pick by Seattle back in 2021 who is fighting to make the roster. Hopefully we have some good competition there.

There’s also a battle for the Punter spot. Incumbent P Jake Bailey will have to be excellent to hold off the much stronger leg of Ryan Stonehouse. Stonehouse booms his punts but has lessplacement accuracy than Bailey. Still, I think the younger former Titans punter has the literal leg up on Bailey, averaging nearly 5 yards more per punt than Bailey. I think we all hope we aren’t punting very often but if we are, I think I’d rather take my chances with the booming leg of Stonehouse.

What are you excited to see? What players are you most anxious to see in action, and which battles are the one you look forward to most? I’m curious to hear your responses, I’m actually getting pumped to see what we got. Don’t mistake this as enthusiasm for our season, I’m nowhere near that yet, but I do want to see some young guys and some of our players returning from injury and how they look. this team has a lot of work to do to get me to feel positive about how our season will go, but maybe they surprise me a little how our young players perform and our botom of the roster looks. I can only hope!

I wonder if we hear today who’s playing and who is not. I am sure we won’t see James Daniels and Brewer on the OL. I don’t think we see Melifonwu or Trader and Phillips and maybe not Chubb, Tyreek either.

Hard to say who else. Don’t know why the Dolphins are the only team keeping it a secret.

    On Tyreek:

“Just for clarity purposes, he’s trying to practice and he’s working through an oblique that got worse because he was taking every rep that was on the books,” McDaniel told the media at Halas Hall in Chicago before the joint practice with the Bears on Friday morning. “So the medical staff had to kind of jump in and right now we’re trying to prevent it from being a lingering thing, but he is trying to sneak his way into every rep. He is at the height of his competitiveness right now. So we’ll see how we manage that. But I know he’s going all day if it’s up to him and we’re gonna hold them back. We’ll see how much we can.”

  11. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Linebacker Mohamed Kamara was not spotted at practice Thursday, and McDaniel indicated he’s in the concussion protocol.

Kamara was injured Wednesday before the Dolphins were scheduled to fly out to Chicago and was left in Miami, so he’s out for the preseason opener Sunday.

I see Twitter/X is littered with fans throwing hissy-fits over Tua throwing 3 INTs today. Really? It’s called practice for a reason. Plus, I don’t believe any video has come out regarding the sits where Tua threw INTs. Could have been miscommunication, timing, or just testing the limits.

    Absolutely NOTHING to see here.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Conversely, had Tua thrown 3 TDs today, his haters would say that it’s just practice, probably had 3rd stringers defending ‘Reek, etc.

  26. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

    This is huge!

    From Alain Poupart’s practice recap:

    — Cornerback Jack Jones left practice early on a cart, but posted on social media afterward that the issue was simply cramps.

  27. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

    Poupart’s recap is more Indepth:

    — The first competitive session involved one-on-ones, and from a defensive standpoint, it was really rough for the Dolphins’ DBs. It started with eight straight completions or flags thrown by the officials for defensive pass interference.

    — The best Dolphins defensive back in that session without question was cornerback Ethan Bonner.

    — At the far end of the field, the linemen went at it in the pass-rushing work, though it was difficult to see through the linemen watching the action.

    — We were able to observe wins by Jaelan Phillips, Kenneth Grant, Quinton Bell and Grayson Murphy, who punctuated his rep with a loud, not-suitable-for-children scream.

    — The 11-on-11 work began with a bang for the Dolphins defense, with linebacker Jordyn Brooks picking off Caleb Williams when he stepped in front of tight end Cole Kmet.

    — Brooks followed that by stuffing a Bears running back for a tackle for loss.

    — That series does feature a long touchdown pass from Williams to Devin Duvernay after a completion over linebacker K.J. Britt.

    — Linebacker Tyrel Dodson Jr. had the first of a few notable plays when he got to the quarterback.

    — After that session, it was time for some special teams work, and Cameron Goode, battling for a roster spot at outside linebacker, got his hand on a punt.

    — A couple of plays later, Dolphins rookie Monaray Baldwin dropped a Chicago punt, then failed to get to the loose ball before the Bears recovered.

    — On another punt, this one by the Dolphins, the Bears returner beat Channing Tindall to the outside for what might have been a very long return.

    — The 11-on-11s return, and Dodson breaks up a short pass intended for D.J. Moore.

    — We should mention here that the defense flushed Williams out of the pocket more than once, leading to a handful of throwaways by the second-year quarterback.

    — Jack Jones flew in from his cornerback position to meet D’Andre Swift on a running play for a loss.

    — Grayson Murphy has back-to-back nice plays, once with pressure and the next against the run, and makes sure to let everybody know afterward.

    — Later on, after a good run by Swift and a completion in front of Storm Duck, Dodson gets pressure on Case Keenum and B.J. Adams follows with tight coverage on a deep pass.

    — Elijah Campbell came in free on a blitz and Williams didn’t even bother trying to get away from him, in essence conceding the sack.

    — LB K.J. Britt was beaten on a crosser by RB Nashone Wright for a good gain for the Bears.

    — Jack Jones took a big hit on a Bears kickoff return, leading to some whooping by Chicago players.

    – What stands out are the three interceptions thrown by Tua Tagovailoa, who had thrown only one practice interception in training camp in South Florida.

    — There also were a couple of fumbles by running back Alexander Mattison.

    — Second-year tackle Patrick Paul had a lot tougher time in his one-on-ones reps than he had so far against Dolphins defenders.

    — Center Aaron Brewer was the best Dolphins performer during one-on-ones.

    — Wide receiver Erik Ezukanma got laid out by safety Jonathan Owens in seven-on-seven after he came down with a catch and Owens couldn’t stop his momentum.

    — Bears safety Jaquan Brisker intercepted Tagovailoa on a pass intended for tight end Chris Myrick.

    — Running back De’Von Achane had a nice first down run to the left side of the offensive line.

    — Jaylen Waddle got laid out by cornerback Tyrique Stevenson and forced a fumble on the screen play. Waddle was on the ground for maybe a minute but returned to the action.

    — Defensive end Montez Sweat with a sack on Tagovailoa.

    — Malik Washington with a nice jumping catch on the sideline, beating safety Kevin Byard II.

    — Linebacker Noah Sewell with a tackle of Achane in the backfield. Put him on the ground with a tough hit and celebrated. Sewell, the brother of Lions tackle Penei Sewell, later had an apparent cheap shot with an arm to the head of Erik Ezukanma after a 20-yard-something reception from Zach Wilson.

    — Jaylen Wright with a nice first-down reception from Tagovailoa.

  28. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

    — The Dolphins offensive line had four false starts and two holding calls in 11-on-11 work. This obviously is not good.

    — Waddle with a nice downfield reception from Tagovailoa.

    — Byard with a fingertip interception of a Tagovailoa pass to Tarik Black. Ball looks slightly thrown behind Black but could have been caught instead of tipped by Black.

    — Bears linebacker Tremaine Edmunds swung Wright to the ground like a rag doll, nearly starting a fight.

    — Wright with a nice left-side first-down run.

    — Zach Wilson scrambles for a 30-yard gain, getting the offense to the 6.

    — Tackle Ryan Hayes hurt his right ankle or foot and got replaced. He called out for a replacement after the play.

    — The practice ended with each team getting two sets of reps in the red zone.

    — The first Dolphins series began with De’Von Achane stuffed on a running play.

    — That was followed by a couple of flags and another run stuffed before Tagovailoa threw an interception when LB Tremaine Edmunds, the former Bills first-round pick and son of former Dolphins tight end Ferrell Edmunds, stepped in front of the receiver at the goal line.

    — On Chicago’s first red zone series, Minkah Fitzpatrick provides great coverage against Moore in the back of the end zone to force an incompletion, and that’s followed by a sack by Dodson.

    — On the next play, Jones is flagged for defensive pass interference and it’s immediately after that he starts cramping, leading to Armstead and another teammate carrying him off the field.

    — Bradley Chubb gets close to Williams on back-to-back plays for either a sack or a throw-away.

The Dolphins’ next red zone series starts with a muffed handoff between Zach Wilson and Alexander Mattison and a Bears fumble recovery.

    — After a holding penalty against Germain Ifedi, Wilson throws a touchdown pass to Julian Hill, but here comes a penalty against Hill for illegal motion.

    — Wilson ends the Dolphins’ last offensive series in style, throwing a touchdown pass to Andrew Armstrong and setting off a sideline celebration.

    — The Bears’ final red zone series ends with Zeek Biggers sacking Case Keenum.

    — Two short completions from Tua to Waddle, including a nifty no-look pass over the middle while looking to the sideline.

This morning on the Joe Rose show, Rose said he was looking forward to seeing how big Patrick Paul matched up against DE Montez Sweat. Understandably, Sweat gave him some trouble. I don’t care at all about the 3 INT’s by Tua, it’s practice. If/When it happens in a game, you’ll hear it from me. I want to see one or two of young CB’s step up and have a game, and build that into some confidence going forward, I think it could mean a lot.

well Mike E, that play to end the game pretty much sums it up.

  36. Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

    Mike E and Tim,

the Mets are in a complete and total free fall. This team is not going to win in the playoffs. They don’t have the chemistry they can’t hit and they don’t have that magic they had last year. How Chavez and Barnes still have jobs as the hitting coaches is beyond me. They have two players hitting over .260. that’s deplorable with those salaries

  37. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Yes, the Mets are in a place where things are just going wrong. Senga pitching well and then a harmless chopper which he can’t field, and then he grooves one to Turang first pitch after his fielding error and BOOM! Tie ballgame. Then he proceeded to unravel until he was pulled. There’s definitely no magic this season, I agree. Their record is very close to what it was last season, but they were playing so well at this point as they got back into it. It can still happen, maybe if they bring up one or both of the young pitchers McLean and or Sproat it will give the team a jolt. Not having any other pitcher besides Peterson go past 5 innings is a joke, and not sustainable.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

To add, we brought in Mullins for some offensive help and he’s really struggling, and while he’s supposed to be a plus defender, even better than Taylor he hasn’t looked as good. Sometimes things work, sometimes they don’t. Right now, that move hasn’t helped any, hopefully he gets going. We need guys to frigging hit! This lineup is dead!

      • Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

Mullins was hitting .229 when we traded for him. I think his Defense was the reason- he’s faster than Taylor, but nearly identical batting averages. I think they did what they could without giving up good prospects, but it’s just not clicking right now. Not sure they will make the playoffs at this point, which would be a massive failure confiding the payroll and supposed talent of this team.

  38. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Bri – Then next season we might not have Alonso, but I would think they will have better pitching, whether it’s the young guys we have or they go after some legit starters for a change

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I felt like Taylor was more than adequate defensively, he just doesn’t hit

      • Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

agreed. Yes, Canning was pitching very well for us before he went down, and Mcgill out until late September didn’t help either. Montas isn’t really panning out that well. That’s two key back of the rotation starters out and your supposed 2/3 starter pitching wildly inconsistently. Not good, especially when our hitting has been absolute shit.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Miami’s defense was on edge and keyed by Brooks, the emerging middle linebacker leader. Some observers said they saw Brooks in a heated moment with a teammate.

“Today, he was holding people to a high standard,” Fitzpatrick said of Brooks. “And it becomes confrontational. But I think that’s necessary when you do anything to a high standard. So he’s a guy I appreciate playing with.”

and there you have it, a leader stepping up

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Most of the best teams in the league are a well disciplined team. Not all, but most. Giving up free yardage is a killer to most teams.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

we do have a lot of depth, we don’t have true starters

Apologies, I meant to say that he could become an elite zone CB. He hasn’t the size to be a complete shutdown, man-to-man CB, such as Champ Bailey.

      Nevertheless, he could become ELITE.

I know it’s pre season, and it doesn’t really count that much, but doesn’t Skylar Thompson’s performance make you feel like he wasn’t adequately prepared here? I suppose you’d have to see it in the regular season to make it count, but he looked absolutely lost out there for us last season. I feel like the concentrated too much on Tua, and didn’t get the backup ready, and they were counting on Skylar too, which makes it worse!

    Skylar Thompson tonight for Pittsburgh

  49. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

does anyone have a link to the game?

  50. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Steve – Not going to make a big deal out of it because it’s history already, but Skylar Thompson not fitting in our offense when we’re carrying only 2 QB’s, and one of them is the Frajeel, that’s downright incompetent, right?

    • Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

To a point, yes. MM’s offensive is pretty complex, maybe he just couldn’t grasp it, or like Steve said, just wasn’t a fit.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

you tool the O for Tua, then have no plan for anyone else, asinine

it wasn’t Skylar it was MM

Some day he may be a good coach, that day isn’t today

his problem is in his weak areas he doesn’t know how/when to delegate enough

he can’t handle the job, yet he’s calling plays too

  51. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

    100% MM is/was incompetent

    ———

I’ve been looking to reading that for many, many months!

  56. rich0322's avatar rich0322 says:

Hey MF, nice to see you again. It’s been a while because of my dislike of how this team was being put together. While I’m still not a Grier fan and he should be removed as GM, I will say this past draft and off-season has been much better.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I agree with all of the above, though I’ve pinched my nose kept eating what this team has been serving. My major concerns this season? Injuries (as always) and our CB room. If all goes well, I feel we could make some noise this season and have a potential playoff run.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

he’s done a fairly good job of acquiring players and a horrible job of building a team

he reminds me of Ireland, but not quite that bad

MF, do you have a link?

  59. ukfinfan's avatar ukfinfan says:

Listened to MM and TT on CBS pre-game show and they both talk the talk.

From what I’ve read, we got a well earned bloody nose on Friday’s scrimmage. Let’s see if we are even in the same postcode of being able to walk the walk. That would be something to watch.

    Tua getting 1 series apparently.

  60. rich0322's avatar rich0322 says:

The main thing I want from this game is to control both lines of scrimmage. I know it will be backups for the most part, but I want that mentality as a whole, not just the starters.

some great blocking on this drive then the short yardage blues return. Smh

280 pound center and you’re running dives into the A gap? I like the moxie but no.

  71. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Short yardage still very much a problem. You can say you’re physical until the cows come home but until you actually ARE physical on the field, it’s just talk.

  72. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

That was a nice drive, and no question McDaniel was trying to see if this team can convert short yardage plays and early on the answer is NO

  73. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Winning in all 3 phases, but couldn’t punch it in.

Nice to see ST blocking on punts. Haven’t seen that for years

julian hill missed a huge block that might have scored Washington from about the 20.

  74. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

I bet Wilson‘s mom looks hot in little white denim short shorts and a boys small orange jersey cut off at the midriff

  75. Randy's avatar Randy says:

I really hope Borom doesn’t have to play much. He’s not good.

  76. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Gotta say, I hate the new uniform number rules. Tyrrell Dodson is DeVante Parker (#11), Malik Washington is either a backup QB or a kicker (#6).

  77. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

it’s really early, but our offensive guard looks soft

  78. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Kong – are you talking about the play when Malik fumbled? Looked like he was too far ahead of the play and tried to reach back and missed

  79. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

what a shitty throw by Wilson. Easy td

  80. ukfinfan's avatar ukfinfan says:

Outside of the goal line plays, both lines looking pretty good. Starters and backups…

  85. Randy's avatar Randy says:

They have screwed up kick offs so badly. Just go back to the old way and be done with it.

  86. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Rich – good, but far from physical. I know, we gotta take the positives when we can

  88. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Has anyone seen who is on the D-line for us?

  89. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

i’ve seen our defensive lineman, driven to their knees several times

Just saw Grant, thought I saw Phillips before too

  91. rich0322's avatar rich0322 says:

Well, the defense didn’t look good on that drive.

  92. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Silly question – why did CHI just kick the extra point from the right hash?

  93. bookman11's avatar bookman11 says:

Anyone have an answer to to my 1:57PM post? Is it a new NFL rule that extra points are from either the right or left hash?

  97. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

gotta say, Wilson has had some crappy throws, but he also has made some plays and hasn’t looked bad.

all my commentary is with the understanding these aren’t starters on either side
