Pre Season Game 1 – Dolphins @ Bears

Not gonna lie, I’m legitimately excited to see some of our young guys play, and even some of the older guys too. I really didn’t think it would happen, as most of you know, I’m having a hard time being a fan of this team due to the current management, and the Head Coach. That being said, nothing could give me a jolt of enthusiasm more than to see some of our young players look like they can be NFL starters, potentially good ones! I expect there to be a certain amount of sloppiness, this is the first time many of the players we’ll see against Chicago getting their first televised game action and the big lights will be on, and that changes everything. It’s no longer just practice, and for some of these players, their performance in the 3 preseason games can be the difference between making the 53 and looking for a team to pick them up off of waivers.

We’re going to have a very young, unproven secondary, especially at the cornerback position. CB’s Storm Duck and Kendall Sheffield may be the boundary corners, while veteran Mike Hilton will be in the nickel. There are a few other CB’s who would love nothing more to not only win a roster spot but to steal a starting job. I believe that’s very possible here, it’s certainly written in pencil or chalk at this point and can easily be erased. Jack Jones who was with the Patriots and Raiders and now his third team going into his 4th year kind of needs to grab a starting spot and perform or he may never be considered for a starting spot anywhere. CB Ethan Bonner who always gets buzz in training camp needs to do more than that and make some plays with the lights on and get noticed. 2025 5th RD Pick CB Jason Marshall needs to make things happen to move up the depth chart and get a roster spot. It must feel like hell to be on a roster bubble, but sometimes stars are born when the pressure is on and the lights are on too.

The O-line right now is another are of concern and some positives. Already the depth will be tested with RT Austin Jackson OUT with a leg injury and his status for the regular season Game 1 is up in the air . OT Kion Smith has been here a while, and we have OL Liam Eichenberg who is the backup at every position on the O-line, as well as OL Larry Borom who is a backup at OG and OT. We also recently signed OT Germain Ifedi, so we have lots of bodies, but we need answers, one way or the other. Honestly, I can’t wait to see LT Patrick paul, although he may not play much against the Bears. Of course I want to see LG Jonah Savaiinaea and I want him to look like a beast. Not sure if james Daniels plays much either, but with him I just want to see that he’s healthy and moving well. C Aaron Brewer is also dealing with an injury, as is backup C Andrew Meyer. If it’s not Liam Eichenberg at C, your guess is as good as mine as to who else might play C, Daniel Brunskill, Addison West?

The front 7 is definitely going to be the strength of the defense, but that’s assuming our young players that we drafted get up to speed quickly. DT Zach Sieler got his well earned big payday, but next to him, big Benito Jones and 1st RD draft pick DT Kenneth Grant has to show quickly and be a force for us. The initial depth charts show us not working from the 3-4 base but I don’t think that’s necessarily a change in philosophy. I think we will try and put in some speed packages to get our best pass rushers on the field at the same time, but we will still operate from the base 3-4 which should feature RDE Zach Sieler, NT Benito Jones and LDE Kenneth Grant. At OLB depending upon the health of Jaelan Phillips and Bradely Chubb, those two probably start but I would expect to see an awful lot of 2nd year pass rusher Chop Robinson, and I mean a whole lotta Chop! The inside LB’s look as strong as I can remember with ILB’s Jordyn Brooks, Tyrel Dodson and Willie Gay and even KJ Britt. That’s a deep unit right there, and I haven’t even mentioned Channing Tindall. Back to OLB, Quinton Bell turned some heads again so maybe we see a little something from him and Cam Goode too. Mo Kamara might have a tough time making this roster.

At Safety, I think Minkah Fitzpatrick will be on the field the most, but who is with him again depends on health. Ashtyn Davis or Iffy Melifonwu will most likely be the other safety, and since it seems like Minkah will playing more of a centerfield role with us here in miami, Iffy Melifonwu is more of the SS type, but nothing is set in stone. We also drafted S Dante Trader and don’t forget about special teams ace Elijah Campbell who always impresses the coaches. I’m actually willing to give Minkah another chance, and I hope he surprises all of us by returning to his All Pro from back at his old position, not playing Strong Safety, and back with his old team. I’m sure the trade stung some, he’s a prideful fella, but having an All Pro season is the best message to send to Pittsburgh, as well as to become enamored by fans who weren’t necessarily sure if they liked the idea of him back in Aqua and Orange.

On offense, we have to stay healthy. I would expect RB De’Von Achane to see very little action, as well as QB Tua Tagovailoa. Besides, it’s really about the battle of the backups at both of those positions. At RB, it’s about 2nd year RB Jaylen Wright, veteran RB Alexander Mattison and 6th RD draft pick RB Ollie Gordon. At QB, there could be a dogfight for the backup spot with veteran QB Zach Wilson and rookie Quinn Ewers. Granted, Ewers faces an uphill battle because of who our starting QB is, Tua Tagovailoa and his tendency to get injured. Usually, you want a veteran back there, and last year’s hideous carousel of practice squad rejects was an embarrassment, but no more than relying on QB Skylar Thompson as the backup. Grier and McDaniel won’t get caught with their pants down this year so odds heavily favor QB Zach Wilson who has 33 NFL starts, and not the rookie 7th RD pick Quinn Ewers. Quinn Ewers though needs to show something for this team to carry him as the 3rd QB though, so he better up his game if he wants to be on the 53. The Dolphins could still elect to carry 3 QB’s if they like Ewers potential enough because if they put him on the PS, he’s as good as gone.

The WR spot will fun to see some good competition as well. Tyreek Hill won’t see much action if any, but I expect Jaylen Waddle to play some, and then someone needs to step up from the crowded WR room we have. We signed big WR Nick Westbrook-Ikhine early on in Fre Agency after his impressive ’24 season in which he caught 32 passes for nearly 500 yards (497) for a nice 15.5 YPR as well as a heady 9 receiving TD’s. With TE Jonnu Smith gone, it makes sense to think that Westbrook-Ikhine could steal some of those catches, and that it would be nice to have a bigger bodied WR (6’2 211) on the field. Besides NWI, there’s always impressive slot WR Malik Washington who I’m looking forward to seeing some growth from. I think he can be a nice dependable receiver that can find the soft spot and get open when Tyreek and Waddle get the double coverage. He’s quick and shifty and he could get his share of targets. Then there’s good ole Erik Ezukanma who wows and disappears in equal measures. He better do more of the former, because if it’s the latter, he may finally ended his tenure here in Miami. The other Washington, Tahj Washington also needs to shine to make the roster. There’s also Dee Eskrdige who was a 2nd RD pick by Seattle back in 2021 who is fighting to make the roster. Hopefully we have some good competition there.

There’s also a battle for the Punter spot. Incumbent P Jake Bailey will have to be excellent to hold off the much stronger leg of Ryan Stonehouse. Stonehouse booms his punts but has lessplacement accuracy than Bailey. Still, I think the younger former Titans punter has the literal leg up on Bailey, averaging nearly 5 yards more per punt than Bailey. I think we all hope we aren’t punting very often but if we are, I think I’d rather take my chances with the booming leg of Stonehouse.

What are you excited to see? What players are you most anxious to see in action, and which battles are the one you look forward to most? I’m curious to hear your responses, I’m actually getting pumped to see what we got. Don’t mistake this as enthusiasm for our season, I’m nowhere near that yet, but I do want to see some young guys and some of our players returning from injury and how they look. this team has a lot of work to do to get me to feel positive about how our season will go, but maybe they surprise me a little how our young players perform and our botom of the roster looks. I can only hope!

Good ole Grier gave him a 2.5m fully guaranteed contract.

    T LARRY BOROM

Before the game: Borom has been taking first-team reps at right tackle in the absence of starter Austin Jackson, who’s out with a lower leg injury, and he could become a very important player for the Dolphins in 2025 as the backup swing tackle. His performance in camp has been uneven, though it has picked up in the past few days. But the Dolphins would feel a lot better if he could have a good outing against the Bears.

How he performed: Borom wound up playing more than any other starting offensive lineman outside of rookie second-round pick Jonah Savaiinaea, but his performance was a bit uneven. He was given a grade of 48.4 per PFF, which ranked 10th among Dolphins offensive linemen. It didn’t start off well for Borom, who was flagged for illegal formation on the first offensive snap for lining up too far back on the line. The blocking was fine when the first-team offense was on the field, except for the goal-line runs where the penetration came from the middle or left side of the offensive formation.

  2. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

    WR DEE ESKRIDGE

Before the game: There isn’t much separation among Dolphins wide receivers behind Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle, even though 2024 sixth-round pick Malik Washington looks like the front-runner for the No. 3 role. But it’s Eskridge who has been the most productive of the backup wide receivers in camp so far and a good performance Sunday could get him closer to securing a roster spot.

How he performed: Like Washington, Eskridge provided more evidence he’s going to be tough to keep off the 53-man roster, but it had more to do with his special teams work. Eskridge didn’t catch a pass, but he had a 16-yard punt return and a 41-yard kickoff return.

  3. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

    WR TAHJ WASHINGTON

Before the game: After missing his entire rookie season while on injured reserve, Washington has made his share of plays in training camp but still needs to do more to guarantee himself a spot on the initial 53-man roster.

How he performed: The needle continues to point upward after another good performance in the preseason opener. Washington was second on the team with his three catches, but they produced a team-high 53 receiving yards. The first reception was a 9-yard slant from Tua Tagovailoa that converted a third-and-4 and then there was a 34-yard reception from Zach Wilson near the right sideline. At this point, he’s going to be awfully difficult to keep off the 53-man roster.

  4. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

    RB JAYLEN WRIGHT

Before the game: After coming into camp with high expectations based on the flashes he showed as a rookie and viral social media clips of his offseason physique, Wright’s training camp performance has been so far frankly a bit underwhelming. A good performance in the preseason opener could serve as a springboard.

How he performed: This was a mixed bag because Wright ran with some authority on a couple of runs with gains of 5, 6 and 7 yards, the last one on his touchdown. But his other six carries were for minus-2, though he looked like he was more the victim of shaky blocking than anything else. With the injury news involving Alexander Mattison, Wright’s importance suddenly has grown.

  5. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

    QB QUINN EWERS

Before the game: We’ll start off with the third quarterback on the roster and the one without any NFL game action on his resume. Ewers has looked solid for most of training camp, but didn’t do very much in the joint practice Friday. This is another step in his development and logic says he should get a good deal of snaps in this game.

How he performed: Don’t look at the boxscore because it’s not pretty. Ewers finished 5-for-18 for 91 yards with no touchdowns, no picks but two fumbles. The first fumble was bad because it set up a Bears touchdown and he was way too casual with the ball scrambling to avoid backside pressure. The second one came on fourth down, so the Bears would have gotten the ball anyway. More troubling was the inaccuracy we saw on too many throws, something we hadn’t seen very often from Ewers in camp. Let’s just say this was one to forget.

  6. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Trying to find something that would make the Dolphins want to sign Shampklin.

    Nothing!

In preseason last year, 13 carries for 40 yards or a couple blades of grass over 3 YPC. Also had 3 rec for 3 yards.

Makes less sense than the Borom signing and that was awful.

  7. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Damn on Mattison. Feel so bad for him. 😔

  8. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

with Mattison out it likely means Ollie made the 53 and we’ll carry only 4 RBs, including Ingold

Maybe Tahj Washington makes the team now, he looked great yesterday

  9. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

we just signed Mike Boone too who is 5-10, 206 pounds and played for Carolina last year

  10. bookman11's avatar bookman11 says:

What do we expect to find at this point of training camp? These are camp bodies to take reps. I wouldn’t over analyze it.

  11. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

So obviously, Mattison is going to IR and that made room for Shampklin.

Who’s going to make room for Boone?

Something tells me it is going to be Elijah Campbell to IR even though they said it didn’t “look” serious. They still didn’t know yesterday what his exact injury was.

  12. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Boone makes a million times more sense than Shampklin. Maybe just a camp body to take some load off Achane during the PS.

  13. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

    Ah the other casualty:

The team also waived wide receiver Monaray Baldwin

  14. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

just in case Mike thinks our depth sucks and all the good depth is great

    https://buffalowdown.com/only-preseason-bills-biggest-weakness-glaringly-obvious

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

      good team’s depth is great

    • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

That site must be the Bills equivalent to the PhinPhanatic. The added some serious depth on their defense.

They signed Joey Bosa and Micheal Hoecht and drafted Landon Jackson to add to their DE lineup.

They signed Larry Ogunjobi and drafted TJ Sanders and Deone Walker to add to their DT room.

They signed Tre’Davious White and Dane Jackson to add to their CB room. On top of that they drafted Maxwell Hairston, Dorian Strong and Jordan Hancock to add to their DB room.

On paper, Bill’s have solid depth from top to bottom on their roster.

  15. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Perfect example of MM pussifying players:

Mike McDaniel said Darren Waller is not ready to practice, and he doesn’t want his first practice out of retirement to be a joint practice with the Detroit Lions this week.

  16. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Tyreek, Waddle and Phillips – All three are day-to-day with their current injuries.

Mike McDaniel said this morning that Cam Smith and Dante Trader Jr are ready to return to practice this week when they begin joint practices with the Lions.

On Mattison, McDaniel said the neck injury is not expected to be career-ending, which is good news.

On Elijah Campbell, McDaniel said the injury is not serious, and he is day-to-day.

Eichenberg and Andrew Meyer – They will not be ready any time soon to return to practice. Sounds like this is going to go into the regular season for both of them.

  17. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

The Miami Dolphins have two joint practices with the Detroit Lions this week, then play the Lions in a preseason game on Saturday at 1 pm Eastern time. The game will not be aired live on the NFL Network; fans outside of South Florida (and Detroit) will have to sign up for NFL+ to stream the game live.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Lions don’t have anything to prove in these practices, so they won’t be playing their SB this week like the bears

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I’m gonna be pissed, if some POS like Eskridge makes the 53 and not Tahj

he played just like he was at SC on Sunday, those highlights show something he did extra on each reception

on the long reception he broke the dudes ankles twice

  18. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

based on passed reports by dumbshit, Campbell likely gone for season

Along with those three, McDaniel also described safety Elijah Campbell as being day to day, which certainly is good news considering trainers checked out his knee when he was injured in the second quarter of the preseason opener and he didn’t return to the game.

  19. rich0322's avatar rich0322 says:

With a good number of wrs battling for spots on the final roster, I think now is as good as any to try and trade Hill. We may actually get back something decent. We need to be building for the future, which means more opportunities with picks to get OL(includes TE) and defensive help moving forward.

      Rich,

My post below was supposed to be a reply to your post. WordPress is acting up again. Had to log out even though I was already logged in.

  20. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

For whatever it may be worth, there’s a rumor going around that we may trade ‘Reek for Scary Terry McLauren and some ’26 picks from Washington.

As always and with all rumors, take it with a grain of salt.

  21. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Tyreek has 56m in dead cap, if cut, not sure about a trade, but its probably too much to trade him

  22. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

So cumulatively — between Mike Boone and Aaron Shampklin — we’ve added 8 years of experience with 4 career TDs, 27 1st downs in 123 attempts, and both average to about 5’10” at 200 pounds.

These are who Grier brought in to replace Alexander Mattison… make it make sense.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I wouldn’t get too caught up in guys competing for a 3rd or 4th spot.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I just remembered that there will be cutdowns from 90-player rosters. Perhaps we merely signed Shampklin and Boone to be mere camp bodies.

Perhaps we have our eyes on somebody who could be a cut-casualty…

I’d love to get Chris Brooks back, should the Packers cut him (DOUBTFUL).

  23. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Trading Tyreek now would clear almost another 15m in cap this year and clear 36.3m in 2026 cap.

Rich, you are right but it’s not very likely to happen with this regime.

  24. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

M13, we do have a big back named Ollie.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Yessir… just like we used to have a big back named Brooks.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

So if Jaylen Wright (who we traded up for) got next to no playing time last season, do you really think Ollie is going to suddenly come on as something?

Look what Grier did to Brooks.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

You were talking about depth. I think 1 and 2 are Achane and Wright.

  25. Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

McLaurin wants a new contract. I don’t see the point in trading for him when we would probably only get a few mid round picks back. Tyreek is a better fit for this offense.

    • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Trading for Mclaurin would create about a 1m extra cap hit over what we get back on the cap cleared on Tyreek. So, that’s not the problem.

You hit the nail on the head. It’s the contract extension he wants at his age. It will take a while for him to learn the O and like you said, who knows if he would fit.

If I am trading Tyreek, it’s for OL and picks or just picks.

Again, I don’t see it happening as he is valuable to this O. Could we make due without him? Yeah. I think this should be more of a question when we see what our record is close to the trade deadline.

  26. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Brian and Mike, I have no idea what to think about the Mets. I have some very close friends we all grew up as Mets fans. We’re all 🤷🏻‍♂️

  27. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

McDaniel discussed the selection process and why 2022 NFL rushing touchdowns leader, Jamaal Williams, was not signed despite a better resume after also working out for the team Monday.

and he gave a circular bullshit non-answer answer. I really don’t like Mike McDaniel he says complete garbage with a smug look on his face like it means something

  30. Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

    Tim,

I don’t either. It’s a complete unknown regarding the Mets. Their hitting is atrocious , especially given their salaries. I’m pretty much done with them. I’m focused on college and pro football,

  31. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

    @flasportsbuzz

Dolphins OL Bayron Matos, who was airlifted to Ryder Trauma Center after the first Dolphins practice, feels back to himself and wants to play again and expects to be able to, per his agent, who adds that it’s not clear if he will play this season.

  32. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I dunno about the rest of y’all, but I’m ALREADY sensing the injury bug will derail us again this season… based on what we’ve already seen up to and after PSG1.

Who the heck on this team is actually and truly ‘healthy’? Consider past injuries (concussions, ACLs, and otherwise), those who are nicked up (Brewer, ‘Reek, Da’ Penguin, Austin Jackson, and more), and those who’ve we’ve already had to place on IR.

I know, I know… it happens to every NFL team. WRONG! Other teams don’t lose mass multiples of starting players over the course of a season (alright, the 49ers have… TWIN SYSTEM as ours!), yet this matter has gone on way before Coach McD became our HC.

    WHAT IS UP?

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

I brought this up when we hired McDaniel and built the team for his system. We have the same player philosophy as the Niners under Shanahan. We sign players based on talent regardless of injury history.

It means our talent cupboard is full, because we can add talent at lower prices, but the season is always at risk due to a higher rate of injury.

Look at how the Niners seasons go for the last 8 years. They either compete to go deep in the playoffs or their season is derailed by injury.

We do the same thing, except without the success, lol.

I’d say it’s not a bad system except we haven’t seen the up side- unless you consider getting just making the playoffs ‘success’.

its not on Ramsey, MM needs to grow a pair, if Ramsey wasn’t following the rules he doesn’t get to play

if Ramsey makes a stink cut his ass and try to get the money back for conduct detrimental to the team

yeah, I heard about the mock trade with Washington. Personally, I wouldn’t want McLaurin. I agree with Mike, either OL and picks or just picks. I would like to see the team to go away from a wr focused offense and be an offense focused on controlling the line of scrimmage. Rush and pass equally.

  38. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

    This was before practice….

It seems like folks are just looking for trash to talk? WTF does “I’m going to keep it a stack” mean?

It doesn’t seem like something that should even be repeated as bulletin board material. I don’t even see a slight it in.

Takeaways so far: Lions D was well connected and shut a lot of plays down with coverage. Protection was good, but Tua had to move/throw it away a few times. With limited Waddle action and no Reek for team, their run game was more successful than the pass game. Achane had a handful of big plays, run and pass. Thought Miami’s D matched the physicality of the Lions, but Goff and St. Brown were basically perfect. They didn’t get much on the ground but Goff was throwing handoffs and St. Brown catches everything.

Jack Jones CAN be a good tackler WHEN he’s willing… I’ve seen it on his tape on occasion. Unfortunately, he’s really not a willing tackler… much like Deion. As such, I would not (yet) call Jones a “tackler”.

He’s a BALL HAWK(!!!) with a penchant for INTs, PBUs, and return TDs. He must learn patience under DC Weaver to be a complete CB, instead of biting on double-fakes. It CAN BE DONE, but Jones must be willing to learn.

Jones has future star written all over him, but he needs to get consistent and willing in run-Defense and patience. I believe Anthony Weaver can turn him into a STUD.

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Interesting. I’d be curious to see the numbers. Since we were at the bottom of the league in running the 3 WR sets in those situations, then it might not be that large a sample. I mean, if we only ran 10 plays from that formation, then being #1 doesn’t necessarily mean anything.

Also, how often did we run vs pass in those sets. Did we actually pick up the 1sts running the ball?

Cool stats, but I feel there is still some context missing to really know if it means what it appears to mean.

One thing that we do know, is we had a lot of plays from the 21 and 22 personnel, so we know us sucking from those sets is a valid conclusion, lol.

A total of 25 players went to IR since Monday.

  70. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Per Sharp Football, 81 players have gone to IR since the start of training camp as of 12 August. Add in the 11 from yesterday and Ifedi today, that’s 93 players on IR.

With Ifedi going to IR, that puts the Dolphins at 6 on IR right behind the Lions who have the most players put on IR at 7. Right behind the Dolphins are the Patriots, 49er’s and Browns with 5. From Alain Poupart: THE DOLPHINS DEFENSE

The Miami Dolphins certainly looked better in their second joint practice with the Detroit Lions, specifically when it comes to the offense.

    — This time, I watched the Dolphins defense vs. the Lions offense and Maakaron watched the Lions defense vs. the Dolphins offense.

    — The last session of the practice was a specific game situation where the offense got the ball at its 40 down four points with a minute left.

    — Neither team was able to score on that final drive, with the practice ending on a Tua Tagovailoa incompletion after a pass breakup by safety Brian Branch against wide receiver Tarik Black.

    — Before we get to specific plays, let’s just say the Dolphins defense didn’t have a great day going against one of the NFL’s top offenses.

    — This shouldn’t be a shock, but the Dolphins defense again had its hands full with wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown, who had several catches.

    — The Dolphins made some plays against the run, but also gave up some sizable gains, most often to the right side of the Detroit formation anchored by All-Pro tackle Penei Sewell.

    — The Dolphins defense generated little in the way of a pass rush, with the only sack we noted coming from Minkah Fitzpatrick and Matthew Butler in that final late-game session.

    — There was a skirmish involving the Dolphins defense for a second consecutive day, and this one involved linebacker K.J. Britt after an overaggressive block by 6-foot-9 known agitator Dan Skipper.

    — The highlight of practice was a bomb from Jared Goff to Jameson Williams after he got behind double coverage from CB Kendall Sheffield and S Ifeatu Melifonwu. Afterward, as he did after pretty much every one of his catches, Williams stared at the opponent and started chirping.

    — Melifonwu got the better of Williams at least once, in a 7-on-7 period to start practice when his tight coverage forced an incompletion down the right sideline.

    — Goff had back-to-back short touchdown passes to St. Brown later in the 7-on-7, once beating Jason Marshall Jr. to the corner and the other beating Kendall Sheffield in the corner of the end zone.

    — Linebacker Willie Gay Jr. threw WR Dominic Lovett to the ground after a short completion and the ball came out, but not sure we’d call it a fumble because the play likely would have been whistled dead.

    — The next drill involved the offense backed up at its 1-yard line, and the Lions got a first down (per the officials) on three runs by Jahmyr Gibbs before Goff had an easy completion to St. Brown near the sideline in front of Storm Duck.

    — The second-team defense then stuffed Lions RB Craig Reynolds on back-to-back runs, first by Jordan Phillips and then by safety Patrick McMorris.

    — Phillips then combined with Willie Gay Jr. to stuff Jacob Saylors on a run from inside the 5-yard line after Sione Vaki scored on a short TD run.

    — With the ball spotted around the 5-yard line, Goff threw three consecutive TD passes, to St. Brown with Cornell Armstrong in coverage, to David Montgomery with LB Jordyn Brooks seemingly picked on the play and visibly upset afterward, and to Williams with Storm Duck in coverage.

    — In a Dolphins kickoff return period, rookie free agent John Saunders Jr. put a Lions player on the ground with a block.

    — The next set of 11-on-11’s began with Goff’s long touchdown pass to Williams before Jordyn Brooks stuffed Gibbs on a running play.

    — Montgomery came back a bit later with a long gain when he got to the outside (on the right) on a running play.

    — Brooks came up with another stop on a run when the Lions ran a Wildcat formation and Montgomery handed off to Gibbs.

    — St. Brown almost came up with another touchdown when he nearly made a one-handed catch in the end zone despite coverage by Jason Marshall Jr.

    — Linebacker Grant Stuard — you know who he is — had a long kickoff return nullified by a holding penalty before he himself was flagged for holding on a subsequent return.

    — In the next set of 11-on-11, Gibbs had a long run to the outside, again to the right.

    — Gibbs had another touchdown run to add to the two by Vaki.

    — In the session-ending Lions drive with the team down by four with a minute left, Detroit moved the ball down with completions to St. Brown and Williams, but the drive ended when Melinfowu broke up a pass on the last play.

    — The drive also featured a nice breakup near the sideline by Storm Duck and the sack that could go to either Fitzpatrick or Butler.

The Dolphins’ final drive under the same circumstances ended in four plays, the last when Brian Branch had tight coverage against Tarik Black to force an incompletion.

On the first two plays, Tua Tagovailoa couldn’t find an open receiver, leading to a short incompletion and a short gain on a check-down to Jaylen Wright.

  81. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

    THE DOLPHINS OFFENSE

    — This was the report from colleague John Maakaron of Detroit Lions On SI:

    — As an overview, the Dolphins offense rebounded early after a poor showing on Wednesday.

    — Jaylen Waddle, whose participation was somewhat limited Wednesday, certainly sparked the team and he was targeted early in practice.

    — Despite key absences, quarterback Tua Tagovailoa started the day in the red zone 7-on-7 period with two touchdown tosses, one to Waddle with Derrick Barnes in coverage and one to Erik Ezukanma with safety Rock Ya-Sin covering. The next two plays resulted in a Lions coverage sack and Waddle not being to secure a pass with Amik Robertson in coverage.

    — Zach Wilson had two quick touchdowns to start his day, with the second completed to Tahj Washington.

    — The next period with the first-team offense, again in 7-on-7 in the red zone, Tua found Waddle and Malik Washington. Ezukanma had a reception wiped off the board, as a Dolphins receiver was flagged for pushing off.

    — As the full team periods began, Detroit’s first-team defense gained more and more confidence. Tua found Waddle for a chunk gain on the first play of the team period. The next two plays saw the Lions interior of the defensive line pressure Tua to force an incompletion and DJ Reader recording what would have been a sack.

    — The worst period for Detroit’s defense was their second-team defense having their first opportunity on the field in a full team period. Tyson Russell had a major handful of Tarik Black’s uniform, resulting in a flag. Nick Whiteside, who had a solid practice on Wednesday, also was flagged for illegal contact downfield.

    — Zach Wilson was able to find Black on a throw right. He was able to shed tackled to record significant yardage after the catch.

    — Jaylen Wright stood out for his hard running throughout practice. He caught the attention of Lions safety Rock Ya-Sin and cornerback Terrion Arnold. Following a run, all three were pushing and shoving.

    — Dee Eskridge made a nice grab on a seam toss from Tua. He had a slight bobble. but held his concentration to secure the reception with D.J. Reed in coverage.

    — After a special teams period, Tua found Malik Washington for a touchdown that ignited the Dolphins bench and his teammates. Brian Branch had a rare missed tackle and Washington beat Ya-Sin. Following the rep, the Dolphins offense certainly let the veteran defensive back know they weren’t impressed with his coverage at all.

    — The highlight of the day for the Dolphins was a touchdown toss from Tua to Dee Eskridge with Reed in coverage.

    — The Dolphins offensive line continued to have problems with Aidan Hutchinson. If the plays were allowed to continue, the former No. 2 overall pick would have recorded four or five sacks.

    — The end of the Dolphins saw a situational period with the team down four with less than a minute remaining.

    — Tua tossed an incomplete pass to No. 18 and then checked it down to No. 5.

    — On third down, Tua threw behind No. 82. The end of practice saw Brian Branch secure a pass breakup against Black and the Dolphins failing to get into the end zone.

To be honest, i’m not even sure what the heck his grounds for including us in the discrimination lawsuit are.

He certainly wasn’t fired because he’s black or some other protected class.

Even if he thought he was fired because he wouldn’t tank games, that isn’t discrimination, wrongful termination, or somethin along those lines maybe.

The NFL continues to cater to their favs. Chiefs WR Rashee Rice’s discipline hearing won’t be until 30 September.

This will allow Rice to play 3 big games all at home against the Chargers, Eagles and Ravens before getting suspended.

Why wait until after the season starts. Makes no sense.

Damn, Lions put 2 more players on IR today. That puts them at 9.

Tua threw a 50+ yard pass that was overthrown and went off Waddle’s hands

    Have we traded Hill yet?

And, is it just me or does MM have a lost puppy look in his eyes every time I see him? How’s that impacting players?
