Chris Grier Gone! A New Era Begins!

Chris Grier is gone, and I rejoice because this move brings hope that this franchise can turn things around, build a strong team, and become a perennial contender. Chris Grier by all accounts is a very pleasant fellow, but in big business, and the NFL is BIG BUSINESS, you have to succeed when you’re at the top, and Chris Grier failed to do that. I’m not going to spend time discussing any of his failures, I’ve done that plenty, but now it’s a good time to look to the future.

As many of you know, I made a statement, and ultimatum of sorts. I said that if GM Chris Grier was still here next season, that I would not continue to support this team, that I COULD NOT, and I meant it. I actually felt some sad pangs of nostalgia, because I’ve been with you guys and gals for somewhere around 12 or so years, give or take a year or two, and I was thinking to myself could I really just cut off ties with all of you here? I wasn’t actually sure if I could follow through on my statement, but now I’m glad that I don’t have to. Phew!

Now that the big domino has fallen, the Dolphins need to trade some players and get some draft compensation to help build this team better. Jaelan Phillips, Bradley Chubb, Minkah Fitzpatrick, Rasul Douglas, Jack Jones, trade ’em all and start this all over and build it the right way! Hope springs eternal as we can now look forward to bringing in a GM who has patience and discipline and lets the draft come to him, rather than reaching for certain players he likes and constantly overspending draft capital by trading up. You know who those players are and just how many times it’s happened. Inexcusable.

It hasn’t been easy being a Dolphins fan the last 25 years. We lived through the Patriots Dynasty with Brady and Belichick from 2001-2019. The Bills drafted Josh Allen in 2018, and the returns were pretty quick. The Bills have taken over nicely for the Patriots, becoming the Beast of the East since 2019. Yes, we had a glimmer, or as I would call it a “Mirage” in 2023, but the Bills in the end blew away the mirage and extinguished the silly thought that we were actually contenders. The Bills are stumbling just a bit, and now we have the Patriots who just walked right on past us, leaped past us actually, and are in 1st place after 8 games at 6-2.

The Miami Dolphins and NY Jets continue the cycle of hiring and firing new regimes, but that’s what losing brings. Chris Grier was given a wide berth and plenty of leeway, plenty of time, and plenty of money and cooperation from the Team Owner Stephen Ross. Chris Grier was GM for most of 10 years and finished with a 77-80 record. So while the Patriots had a two decade run at the top, and now the Bills and Patriots are fighting out, the Dolphins and Jets have languished at the bottom fighting for the basement spot in the AFC East for over 20 years. I’m not even sure why Dolphins and Jets fans hate each other, we should empathize with them as we have been in the same boat, a boat with holes in it that forever continues it’s descent to the murky ocean floor.

I have to tell you how excited I am to see who we trade and what compensation we get. I am once again excited about next year’s draft, even though I know not who will be pulling the strings and making the selections, but I will sleep well tonight knowing who isn’t. It truly is a time to rejoice, this team is staler than bread you accidentally left in the pantry since 2008. I know Mike McDaniel will remain with the team until season’s end, and really, it doesn’t matter. He was in over his head as the Head Coach, many good coordinators are, and Mike McDaniel was never even an Offensive Coordinator, he was just a run game coordinator, far different than calling all the plays. Even more different than leading men and shaping them for battle in the trenches.

I’m excited to see who we hire as Head Coach. Do we continue the trend of hiring a first time NFL Head Coach or do we go to the recycling bin and find someone who was already an NFL Head Coach? I know we need a strong personality, someone who instantly commands respect, and preferably, someone who was successful and has a strong resume in either the college ranks, has NFL experience, or was successful former Head Coach (Not named Bill Belichick). Jon Gruden is a name that has bandied about and I know this guy knows his football, and is a very energetic person with tons of grit, tons of personality, and has won a Super Bowl as a HC. I think much like the LA Chargers hiring Jim Harbaugh, Gruden could similar things for the Dolphins. I’m not stuck on Gruden, but I wouldn’t hate it.

I have an idea, why don’t we just give Jaylen Wright some freaking playing time! We’re going to trade him for a 6th or 7th RD pick? Just keep him and give Achane a rest every now and again so we have him for next season. Ollie Gordon is already banged up, and you know you really need 3 RB’s at a minimum in the NFL.

  4. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Joe Rose says, Grier left the Dolphins in cap hell

I say true, but that’s not what the issue was

Ross wanted to win at all cost, Grier said ok (in a dufus voice)

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

…so Grier, having no idea how to implement a winning plan, copied what the Rams did by going after high end talent at the expense of draft/cap

MM, like a young kid at Christmas, wanted shiny new toys

then Grier, having no clue how to build a team, says, ok (again in a Rufus voice) I’ll get you what you want

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

what does a real GM do in these instances?

Mr Ross building a championship doesn’t happen over night, so if we trade away top picks for players, when it doesn’t work we’ll be set back as a franchise 5 years

I have a 3 year plan to compete for a championship, but you’ll have to be patient

to MM he’d say, getting all these fast cars sounds great, but we need to build a road first, to get full performance

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

copying what the Rams did could work, but you need a foundation and a plan first, not just get the final pieces and think we’re good to go

In the end it was obvious Grier had no granulated plan, and was in way over his head

      • Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

I’m going to argue ANY of that. Spot on! Imo…lol

So, we only cleared 1.5m with the Phillips trade that we can carry over to next year. Bummer, but that was probably the cost of getting a 3rd over a 4th. It also had nothing to do with the restructure on Brooks.

I will still take it. Now, the Eagles just need to lose. lol

  6. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

I bet Chubb is jealous he didn’t get traded to the Eagles instead of Phillips. lol

Cowboys finalizing trade for LB Logan Wilson from Bengals: Sources

  8. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

The Titans exchange the pass rusher for a conditional fifth-round pick, a league source told The Athletic on Monday.

  9. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Odd trade by the Cowboys, but it is Jerry Jones. You need pass rush help but you trade for an ILB who is nursing a calf injury and didn’t play this past weekend. Also, who was demoted from the starting lineup due to poor play.

Granted I liked Logan Wilson in the draft. Their whole defense sucks so it’s not just Wilson. A new environment is just what he needs.

    • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Just saw another article. While Logan Wilson got replaced by rookie ILB Demetrius Knight Jr., Wilson still has a higher PFF grade than any Cowboys ILB.

Demetrius Knight Jr was an ILB several of us wanted in the draft. I think Wyoming really liked him.

  10. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

The 3rd round pick for Phillips was also a good move for the eagles.

First, Phillips pass rush win rate and overall pass rush grade (PFF) is higher than any Eagles edge rusher this season.

Second, the Eagles can still get a pick back for Phillips in a 2027 comp pick. If Phillips stays healthy and the eagles lose him in free agency, the Eagles can get as high as a 2027 4th round comp pick back for Phillips. That will be dependent on what kind of contract he gets and what the Eagles do in free agency next off season. Though, I don’t see the them being big players in free agency as they are a well built team through the draft mostly.

  11. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

M13, I have to give you a thumbs up for pounding the table for Walter Nolen. He was good in his first ever NFL game with 4 tackles (3 solo), 1 sack and 1 PD.

Rookie CB Denzel Burke played decent last night starting for the Cards. I wanted him over Jason Marshall. Grier took Marshall at #150 and Burke went at #174.

I still have hopes for Marshall to develop.

Jets have 5 1st RD picks next 2 years, Dolphins have $150M in dead cap + Tua and Capri McD

    ———–

Let me make it a little worse:

By trading Gardner and Williams, all their money owed got accelerated to next year. Jets are only stuck with 21m in dead cap between both players next year but cleared a bunch of cap.

If the cap next year is 300m, the Dolphins are at about -6m

If the cap next year is 300m, the Jets will have about 110m in cap to spend in the offseason. These trades also increased their cap this year to 19m which can be carried over and added to that 110m in 2026 cap.

In 2026, they probably will have over 125m in cap to spend along with a bunch of draft capital.

    T-29 minutes and counting…

  60. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Jets are the first team in 25 years to trade multiple players in-season for multiple 1st round picks.

    • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Right now, jets have picks 3, 32, 35 and 46 in the first 3 rounds. They have no 3rd round picks and only one 4th round pick, no 5th except a potential 5th round comp pick, three 6th round picks and three 7th round picks (2 of them being potential com picks).

So 7 of their 12 picks are slotted #178 or later. That’s not too bad.

    • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

He’s wrong. We still owe Chubb 23.8m after this season. We would have only saved 7m in cap next year not 20m.

I’ll talk about it in my next article, but Stephen Ross bringing back Mike McDaniel and Tua next year to me is probably worse than bringing back all 3 (Grier, McDaniel & Tua). No GM worth a shit is going to want to come into that ridiculous situation. It’s so disappointing to Dolphins fans to know we have to try and overcome the shitty state that Grier left this team in, little talent, and whole lotta cap issues. It’s going to take to time to climb out of that hole, and by the way, while we’re doing that, the Jets have multiple 1st and 2nd RD picks in both of the next two drafts, the Patriots are already head and shoulders better, and the Bills have Josh Allen and they will probably get better as well, you can never count them out. Firing Grier was supposed to bring hope for the future of this team but if Ross once again goes with half measures in keeping Mike McDaniel, there is no fucking hope, none!

We’ll be like 2-3 years behind the Jets and Patriots and destined as bottom dwellers in the AFC East.

      OK, thank you.

Lol…I believe we are headed in the right direction and that is down. I don’t believe there is anyway to right the ship, but who knows.

TG better get it right. Ross needs to stay away!

I just ran into a Jets fan friend of mine, and he was so disgustingly smug I can’t stand it. All I could say was well I hope they fuck it up like they always do
his response nailed me “ Well, it seems the dolphins are doing that for you guys so…”

  84. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

I know there was a lot of bitching about all the Jets picks they have accumulated.

BBM has gotten over it. Why?

The Jets traded away the #1 CB in the NFL and the #4 DT in the NFL according to PFF. That is going to be very hard to replace even with all those draft picks. At least with this next draft, there is no Sauce Gardener or Quinnen Williams type players to use those picks on.

    • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

That said, I fear the Jets will take players BBM wants right before we pick starting with Fernendo Mendoza. I could see the Jets going:

      #2 QB Fernendo Mendoza

      #32 CB Colton Hood

      #35 WR Chris Brazzell

      #46 DT A’Mauri Washington

      OMG that would suck!

So much for climate change/global warming. We had a record breaking snow storm this past January, 8″. No hurricane landfalls this year. Now, we are going to get down into the mid to low 30’s here on the panhandle on Monday and it’s not even mid November yet.

No GM worth a shit is going to want to come into that ridiculous situation

There’s only so many GM jobs, so don’t agree

We could keep Champ on for another year, if Ross still has his head up his ass and keeps MM or just tell the new GM he’s getting a free year to transition, next year you can hire a new HC, in which I’d tell him MM gets no input on players

  87. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

in the GM hiring process I’d have the candidates lay out their plan on building a team, seems having a plan has been missing since JJ

  90. Realist's avatar Realist says:

IMO, they traded what they could trade and I’m even surprised they were able to deal Phillips. There is one player on this team, Achane, that is desirable. The rest are aging, or injury prone, or not a game changer, or all three. That includes Waddle. Waddle is not JJ, Lamb, Chase, Nacua, Collins, Njigba, Nabers – heck Higgins or Garrett Wilson are much better options. (Almost) every team already has a Waddle, and those that don’t are not in a position to win, so they aren’t giving up a high pick for him.

And, as for the Jerks getting all the picks? Doesn’t worry me too much. I don’t put much stock in the draft as a whole. How many drafted REALLY make a difference? 5? 10? from each draft? How many first round busts are there every year, or second and third rounders who don’t make impact or grow. A lot. They could very easily draft three duds as they could three studs with those first rounders. The Fins seem to do it all the time lol.

So, let’s let the season play out. There’s no way this team wins more than one or two more games – especially if Ewers gets a look later in the season. We’ll have a top-5 pick and who the F knows what will happen with whomever they draft. Could be great, could suck, could get injured…there are no guarantees in any of this. Hang in there, everyone! Fins Up for life!

It may not happen right away but by 2027 you may not recognize this team. You can’t overturn a team in one year. But a new GM and HC will have their own vision.

Stephen Ross is entering uncharted territory as Dolphins owner

The last time Ross went through a real GM search, he settled on Dennis Hickey after other candidates dropped out. Hickey didn’t last long, and in 2016, Grier was hired after a relatively soft search by Ross, Mike Tannenbaum, and the other Dolphins executives.

Stephen Ross will have to hire a new general manager and let him decide on Mike McDaniel’s future

If we look back through Ross’ ownership, this will be the first time that the general manager position will be vacant, and the head coaching job likely will be as well. All he has to do is not meddle or give the next GM stipulations about keeping McDaniel.

If we look back at the last 16 years of Ross’ ownership, we can see the trend that has to stop this year.

    • 2009: GM – Jeff Ireland – HC – Tony Sparano – Ross inherited them from Wayne Huizenga
    • 2012: GM – Jeff Ireland – HC – Joe Philbin
    • 2014: GM – Dennis Hickey – HC – Joe Philbin
    • 2016: GM – Chris Grier – HC – Adam Gase

2016 was an interesting year, because while it would seem Ross had the opportunity he has now, he actually did not. Mike Tannenbaum was Ross’s right-hand man in the coaching search. Tannenbaum brought Gase into the fold, given his friendship with Gase’s agent, Jimmy Sexton.

What the Dolphins didn’t do, but now have the opportunity to do, is give the new GM full control over the search for a head coach. The problem? Stephen Ross isn’t someone who can keep his hands out of the search.

The departure of Grier is still fresh, but the talk throughout the league is that Ross wants to keep McDaniel as the team’s head coach. It seems he believes the problems are personnel and not necessarily coaching. Dolphins fans will love that…

    • rich0322's avatar rich0322 says:

I don’t give a crap how much he spends, he is a horrible owner. Clueless when it comes to football.

I’m hoping for a 50 point loss to Buffalo, with fans leaving at halftime. Please, if you are going to the game, bring a paper bag.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

The talk throughout the league should NOT be that Steve Ross wants to keep Capri McD as the team’s HC in 2026. It’s purely speculation, based on the fact that we have to keep Tua on our roster at least through 2026 before parting ways. There is nobody better to work with Tua than Capri McD, who has designed the entire Offense to cater to his strengths while minimizing his weaknesses.

It’s a mere theory and nothing more… and to be fair, I said it before any local or national writers started bantering about as much. Again, it’s a bloody THEORY (not even a hypothesis), nothing more.

The way I see it and the way I WANT it, is for Tua to play the Kirk Cousins role to Michael Penix next season.

Personally, I’m done with Capri McD and Tua.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I mean, it’s pretty evident that Tua isn’t the same QB we had in ’23. Personally, I think he’s damaged goods (hip and concussions).

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

And in the case I’m not being LOUD enough (LOL), I WANT SPAGS AS OUR NEXT HC!!!

And I WANT TO DRAFT THE BEST QB in the ’26 Draft, to REPLACE TUA!

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

And if we don’t feel the next franchise QB is available in the ’26 Draft, nobody is expecting us to go to the Super Bowl in ’26.

Perhaps we can wait until ’27 to draft our franchise QB.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

So if we’re trying to tank in ’26, maybe ya bring back Capri McD and play Tua all season. Perhaps we get R1P1 in ’27.

      • rich0322's avatar rich0322 says:

I thought Tua was damaged goods on draft day. I even said it here, that drafting Tua was a mistake.

  98. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

    @DavidFurones_

Dolphins QB Tua Tagovailoa is now entirely off the injury report. Last week, while still practicing in full, he was listed for the thumb on his throwing hand and an illness (eye).

    ———

Tua’s eye has returned to normal after having been bitch-slapped by Capri McD.
