Miami Dolphins hire new GM Jon-Eric Sullivan

Like a stairway to heaven, the Miami Dolphins have been taking all the right steps to get back to legitimacy. Firing former GM Chris Grier was STEP 1. Sitting QB Tua Tagovailoa was STEP 2. Finally firing Head Coach Mike McDaniel was STEP 3. Hiring GM Jon-Eric Sullivan was STEP 4. The next step hopefully complete the cycle in a positive way. The most important thing the Miami Dolphins did was hire what seems like a truly competent man to run the Organization. He has the requisite scouting background and was responsible for building the roster in Green Bay, and he had done well there in that capacity. Now, there is one man who is above all others, and he will have the final say on all things involving the team as far as players and personnel.

Head Coach John Harbaugh is not coming here. Ross is a pretty malleable guy, especially when it comes to getting what he wants, but it appears that John Harbaugh truly does want the keys to the kingdom and all its riches, and I don’t believe Ross will accommodate that. That doesn’t mean there aren’t any excellent candidates for the Miami Dolphins to hire. There’s a Head Coach not named John Harbaugh that has nearly an identical record as Head Coach in the NFL.

John Harbaugh 180-113. .614 Playoffs 13-11

Mike McCarthy 174-112 .608 Playoffs 11-11

Uncanny that over a span of 18 years, that these two coaches are so close in their records, for different teams in different conferences, Harbaugh all 18 with the Baltimore Ravens in the AFC, and McCarthy with 13 years with the Green Bay Packers and then 5 with the Dallas Cowboys, all in the NFC. I’m not advocating for the hiring of Mike McCarthy, but should we be looking for a Head Coach with a resume quite even with Jim Harbaugh’s, he exists. I know we have struck out with hiring first time Head Coaches, from Nick Saban to Cam Cameron to Tony Sparano to Joe Philbin to Adam Gase to Brian Flores and finally to Mike McDaniel. Just like some of the QB’s in the NFL, a lot of it is timing. Look at Baker Mayfield, and Sam Darnold. Both players flourishing after failing in their first NFL contracts, and the same goes for Coaches. I think it’s possible that both Brian Flores and Mike McDaniel can succeed for their next teams, they just have to be the right fit for that organization. If Tua stayed healthy and competitive, Mike McDaniel might still be here.

I’m 100% not against hiring another first time Head Coach. There’s been a lot of discussion over GB DC Jeff Hafley. The LA Rams DC is a household name in Miami, Chris Shula. Former Miami Dolphins DC Anthony Campanile is a hot name right now too. I have to say I loved that guy’s attitude and fire while he was here. If you watched last night’s game, Indiana’s Head Coach Curt Cignetti might garner some interest, although I have no idea whether he would want to enter the NFL ranks. The point is, there are options out there, and all is not lost if we don’t get John Harbaugh, who no doubt is an excellent candidate. Most of all, I trust that we have the right man in place to make that most important decision, and once again I stress that it will be HIS decision, and that decision will refelct directly on him, no one else. Full accountability and responsibility. The right way! Finally!

good read Mike, you misses an “h” on “has” in the first paragraph.

Also, I would like to add an additional step that you didn’t mention

The two co-chief scouts were also relieved of their duties.

Finally!!! And, as Rock may or may not have alluded to, the scouting department was gutted of their executives.

    Thank you, Mike E.

You missed a step, Mike. The firing of the long-tenured head scouts was important. They were part of the problem as well.

Regarding Harbaugh, I agree. If he wants to be king let him go somewhere else. Miami has already had King Parcells and how did that work out? McCarthy is interesting. Beyond his overall record, he went 43-25 in four years with the Cowboys. Also was fined two years in a row for practice violations. Can’t say the game has passed him by since he coached through 2024. And he dealt with the Jerry Jones so there is that.

I asked if had watched any of our games 3rd and 4 th quarters.. we have a pretty low bar to attain

Cignetti being well paid at Indiana, he would have to want to coach in the NFL. I think he would have Saban in his ear telling him not to make the jump. Him and Saban have very close ties.

That said, Cignetti said he likes to build his teams like the good NFL teams do. He builds his team through good recruiting (like the draft) then fills in the roster and makes it better with experienced and productive players through the transfer portal (like free agency).

I don’t think he would even entertain the move.

  9. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

I had Indiana RB Kaelon Black penciled in as a UDFA want and be RB4 on the roster. I think he has improved his draft stock to the point he gets drafted. Especially with all this national exposure. The dude is 5’10, 210 pounds of rocked up muscle.

I hate that Indiana lost their top 2 edge players for the season and another is really banged up. They made it work the last 2 games but will be tougher vs Miami with their big OL and Fletcher at RB.

Dolphins, with GM in place, reach out to John Harbaugh over coaching vacancy

The Miami Dolphins have immersed themselves into the John Harbaugh sweepstakes.

The Dolphins finally reached out to Harbaugh to let him know they are interested in him for their coaching vacancy, according to an ESPN report Saturday morning. Miami reportedly reached out upon finalizing an agreement to bring new general manager Jon-Eric Sullivan on board.

The Dolphins hadn’t previously contacted Harbaugh as they were prioritizing the GM search, moving quickly through the search and interview process to land Sullivan, who came from the Green Bay Packers where he was vice president of player personnel.

Sullivan is now spearheading the coaching search with Dolphins owner Steve Ross, according to a league source. Hall of Fame Dallas Cowboys quarterback and current television analyst Troy Aikman is remaining with the team in an advisory role through the coaching search, after aiding in the GM search and selection.

At least one team didn’t wait long to reach out to fired Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel about its head coaching vacancy. McDaniel will interview for the Titans job on Wednesday, according to NFL Network. He and the Dolphins parted ways Thursday after four seasons and a disappointing 7-10 record in 2025.

  25. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    sb7,

It all depends on how these teams structure things. My guess is HCs and GMs both have lots of input on personnel issues. I believe the GM should always have the final say, but that doesn’t mean the GM isn’t just giving the coach what he wants sometimes. Coaches know more about what the team in their minds need. GMs don’t. I hope they all come to a consensus

    • markeyh's avatar markeyh says:

The GM should “ALWAYS” have the final say but they also need to comunicate with the HC and both agree on the type of players they are looking for.

But if they come to disagree than the GM gets the call.

  26. markeyh's avatar markeyh says:

Brooks, Brewer earn AP All-Pro honors

The Associated Press announced Saturday its annual All-Pro teams and two Dolphins players were among the honorees. Linebacker Jordyn Brooks earned first-team AP All-Pro honors, while center Aaron Brewer was named to the second team.

It is the first All-Pro honor of Brooks’ career and the first first-team selection for Miami since wide receiver Tyreek Hill in 2023. Brooks is the first Dolphins defensive player to earn the accolade since cornerback Xavien Howard in 2020 and the first inside linebacker to do so since Hall of Famer Zach Thomas in 2006.

In his sixth NFL season and his second with the Dolphins, Brooks started all 17 games in 2025 and finished the season as the NFL’s leading tackler. He tallied 183 tackles (99 solo), 3.5 sacks, 13 tackles for loss, three passes defensed, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery on the season. He was the only player in the NFL to post 150-plus tackles, 10-plus tackles for loss and at least 3.0 sacks. He was also one of only two players to record eight games of 11-plus tackles and the only one to post two games of 18 stops or more. Brooks’s 183 tackles in 2025 are the fourth-most stops in a single season in franchise history. Brooks, who joined the Dolphins as a free agent in 2024, was voted a team captain by his teammates for the first time in his career ahead of his second season with the team in 2025.

It is also the first All-Pro accolade for Brewer, who is the first Dolphins center to be named to the second team since Dwight Stephenson in 1983.

Brewer anchored an offensive line that led the way for a rushing attack that averaged 4.7 yards per rush, the fourth-best mark in the NFL in 2025. He allowed only one sack in 2025, according to PFF, which was tied for the least among starting centers across the league. The offensive line did not allow a sack in four games all year, the third most in the NFL, trailing only Jacksonville and Houston, each of which had five. The Dolphins rushed for at least 100 yards in each of those four games, becoming one of only four teams in 2025 to record 100-plus rushing yards without allowing a sack in four or more games (Jacksonville, 5; Detroit, 4; Houston, 4). Brewer, who also joined the Dolphins in 2024, served as a team captain for the first time in his career in 2025.

    Fast Facts: Jon-Eric Sullivan

    Attacking the quarterback position

Sullivan’s earliest mentor, Ron Wolfe, had a famous approach that’s still mentioned every draft season. The idea is simple: draft a quarterback every year to build depth, create options and develop talent.

Sullivan saw the Packers transition from Brett Favre to Aaron Rodgers to Jordan Love without any bridge years over the course of 20-plus seasons. Rodgers and Love were acquired while their predecessor was still at peak performance. The result: zero lag between Hall of Fame quarterbacks (Favre and Rodgers), and a young star who’s made the playoffs all three years the as Packers starter throwing for 80 touchdowns over those three seasons.

“You have to be always assessing your quarterback situation, making sure you have a triggerman you can win with.” Sullivan said.

Dolphins coach tracker: Klint Kubiak interview, John Harbaugh on list

The Miami Dolphins are shopping for a new head football coach.

Mike McDaniel‘s firing on Jan. 8 was the first step and the hiring of Jon-Eric Sullivan as the team’s new general manager was the second step.

Now, it’s on to contacting prospective coaches and setting up interviews.

The whale in the room is John Harbaugh, who was fired by the Baltimore Ravens this week. There are reports that the Dolphins have contacted Harbaugh, who also is high on the list of several other teams seeking coaches, including the New York Giants.

Randy – I like that Chris Shula has been working closely with Sean McVay, and that he really improved the defense in a 2 year span. You have to have the horses, and the Rams did draft well on defense the last couple of years, and they beat a lot of good teams this season, defense really showed up. They beat the Ravens 17-3, The Jags 35-7, The Seahawks 21-19, Bucs 34-7. There were also a couple of games where they gave up a lot of points, but I like what I saw from Shula and the defense. No question, the Shula name means a ton to me as well.

  43. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

D’Angelo Ponds is a film junky. His DC Bryant Haines said on the opening pick six that Ponds knew exactly what was going to happen. They have trained Ponds (all their DB’s) to learn the “tells” in what opposing offenses do based off of splits, formations, receiver releases, etc. Bryant Haines credits his cornerbacks coach for schooling up the Indiana secondary.

On the first play of the game, Ponds recognized the formation and the receiver splits so he decided to back off to an off coverage hoping to bait Moore into throwing his way. It worked to perfection, pick 6.

QB Dante Moore has 4 days (1/14/26) to declare for the draft or stay in college another year. He is waiting to hear from the College Advisory Committee on his draft evaluation and where he’s expected to land before making an informed decision.

I think based on a seriously weak QB class, he will be told he is a top 10 pick and decide to enter the draft. He will have much more competition next year and could end up landing outside the top 15 picks. It will not only be a good QB class but also an elite WR class.

I think the only thing that will keep him in college is being drafted by the Jets.

    • rich0322's avatar rich0322 says:

Dante, stay in school.  The Jets have been the worst franchise in the NFL for the last decade, and it’s where QBs’ careers go to die.  I would take the NIL money, get more experience, and stay away from the Jets.  I hope people close to him tell him the same.  It’s in his best interest. LOL

  48. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

I took a quick look at the top draft eligible WR’s for the 2027 draft and it is elite. A bunch of big and fast WR’s. Top 10 is all over 6′ with 7 of them 6’2 or taller. Slowest in top 10 runs a 4.42. I can see anywhere from 6-8 WR’s go in the first round in 2027.

Totally opposite from this years draft which has mostly big and slower WR’s. There is not one WR in this years top 12 that run a sub 4.4 forty. Many have a hard on for Carnell Tate but he is projected to run a 4.58 to 4.6 forty. Every draft site has him ranked a top 17 or higher draft pick. I just don’t see it. You spend a draft pick that high he better be your new #1 WR or future #1. Tate will never be a #1 WR being that slow. I bet he declines to run at the combine.

Caleb Williams is such a mixed bag. He was #36 in completion % this past season (58.3%!!!), yet he threw for 3,942 yards, 27 TDs, and 7 INTs… 90.1 passer rating.

If he continues to grow as a passer, perhaps he becomes elite? I dunno… and he has one helluva stacked roster in terms of play-makers around him, with a decent O-Line for the first time in Chicago in forever… not to mention very good RBs.

I think he’s over-rated and will fail. Maybe I’m wrong, but I’m not betting on him.

How do the Bears not recover that? lol

How did we get Houston’s #91 3rd round pick?

Bears score a TD. Caleb Williams completion % on the night? 48.4 %!!!

And just like Tim Tebow, Caleb has clutch in his DNA.

Absolutely incredible. 3rd down, 4th down, doesn’t matter. He’s making plays when he needs to. Really cool to watch a young qb that everyone doubted excel. Wish our guy had that “clutch gene” 😂😂
