Dolphins to build solid foundation with Sully and Haf

I watched the entire introductory press conference, and all I can say is that we have two passionate men, men who understand what needs to be done and have a plan already in place to execute that plan. I can tell with you confidence that will that they will stick to that plan, a process if you will. I know some of you, OK one of you, thought Chris Grier did a great job. I think part of the problem with Chris Grier was if he had a process, part of that problem was falling in love with certain players rather than having a draft grid with a whole bunch of players that you graded equally and then slide to the next player if a specific player you had interest in was taken. It seems clear to me that Grier, if he believed that he could just slide to player with a similar grade that it would work out, he would have done that. That’s part of Grier’s process. Identify a player, and make sure you get that player. After watching Sully and Haf discuss their plan, don’t bet on that ever happening again here in Miami. Draft picks are far too valuable to squander like that, especially when you have already traded away so many picks to trade for what you thought were impact players that didn’t actually impact the team.

As far as QB is concerned, I’m not saying there’s zero chance Tua Tagovailoa ever takes another snap for the Miami Dolphins, but I’d put it at less than 5%. It seemed clear to me they will be looking for QB’s, and also willing to give Quinn Ewers a shot, but it also seemed very likely to me that we will be drafting a QB in the 2026 Draft. That doesn’t mean RD 1, but they both understand that you need a QB, and that we might not have one on the roster, including Tua Tagovailoa. They also made it clear that until they find a QB, they will continue to draft QB’s, which I believe is the correct way to approach winning.

One thing I was also impressed with was each guy’s humility, and their honesty about their journeys to where they are now. I really do believe that they interviewed each and every candidate fairly but with the knowledge that a candidate was going to have knock their socks off to surpass Jeff Hafley, not because of the familiarity, but because of the man he was familiar with. You can feel the passion and the sacrifices that Hafley made to rise up to the ranks of an NFL coordinator. Both of these gentlemen appear to be tireless workers who give their all, and to turn this program around, that will be much needed. Hafley seems like a guy who will work with players and demand and expect excellence and dedication. If he doesn’t get that dedication, I think the player will know it, and if it continues, things won’t fester like they did under McDaniels watch. He seems like a total no nonsense type of guy that will everyone, including himself accountable. That is another thing that is much needed here in Miami. These “star” players running the asylum is over, this is a team, and everyone is part of that team, no exceptions.

Another observation is that these two guys definitely have a synergy. While that’s not a necessary component, I think it will help us quickly turn things around. Sometimes it’s good to have guys with different philosophies because there’s rarely only one way to do things, but despite the hierarchy where in this the GM has final say on everything, if the ideologies are so different, you’re bound to have one or the other get seriously frustrated to the point where the relationship could break. It appears as if these guys are definitely on the same page. How Chris Grier was influenced by Stephen Ross, we’ll never know. At the very least, it looks like Sully and Haf are free to do as they please, and Stephen Ross will not only allow it, but be willing to financially back whatever they need. In my mind, that’s ALL Stephen Ross should be doing is opening the purse strings, but he needs to stay out of football operations completely. He did the right thing, hired what appears to be a very competent GM who has now hired his Head Coach, and now that Head Coach will fill out his staff, hire two coordinators, and all the assistant coaches too.

Head Coach Jeff Hafley made it clear that he will be calling plays for the defense, it’s what he loves to do, and although we will be hiring a Defensive Coordinator, it will be Hafley running the defense. I have no issue with that as long it doesn’t appear that he has too much on his plate and other areas of being a Head Coach are suffering. I do think it could potentially limit who will want to come here as DC if Hafley is calling the game. We’ll find out. More than likely we will have first time coordinators on both sides of the ball, so we’ll have to wait and see how that works. Keep in mind that Mike McDaniel was in his 4th season here and he couldn’t figure out a game plan where we were able to win the 3rd quarter nearly the entire season.

As far as the roster is concerned, we basically heard nothing on that because they are still evaluating that, so no comment was the right comment. I have a feeling we will be trimming a lot of fat around here, and guys like Tua, Chubb, Hill might not be around very long. They want young players that will buy into what they’re doing, and frankly, I loved Hafley’s answer to the questions about players late to meetings and that kind of behavior. There will have to be a mutual respect between Coach and player, he will work hard, the player will work hard, and the Coach will push the player to work hard for his team and hopefully, the players will all buy into the team concept,. Let’s face it, we have too many “me” guys, especially the white hot spotlight on the most important position on the field, as identified by Sully and Haf, the QB. Tua embodies NOTHING of a guy who gives it his all for his team, and hasn’t since he got paid. Now Hill is a different story, on game day, Hill was a beast, a dog if you will, but meeting, and the like, he never felt like that applied to him, he was special. Jeff Hafley looks like won’t be tolerating that type of nonsense, and if it continues, that player will be gone, Hafley said that himself.

So now, after all that is said and done, we get to sit back and watch these two guys and their staff build this team after thoroughly evaluating the roster to see who are keepers and who is a goners. Without directly saying it, I’d be willing to bet an awful lot that we’re drafting a QB. As I have made it clear, I’d love to draft a QB, have that QB and Quinn Ewers compete for a starting job, and potentially bring in an inexpensive veteran QB as well, and that means NOT Malik Willis. I don’t think these guys are looking to spend money at that position, especially considering how much of the cap is already invested in a QB who won’t be playing here, Tua Tagovailoa. Hopefully, Former DC Anthony Weaver gets a HC gig this year, and we have yet another 3rd RD pick, a compensatory pick, but one that can turn into a player that can help this team soon. I’m pleased with what we have done, I’m optimistic that we’ll see a difference in 2026, but have a chance to really compete in 2027. I figure 2 drafts and nice reshaping of the roster and a little more cap space to fill in. We won’t be treading picks away for players or moving up and trading picks to move up, I can almost guarantee you that practice left the building with Chris Grier. We will use free agency when we have cap space, but that doesn’t mean our best players on the roster will come via free agency, no, our best players will be drafted. They stressed that several times, and I love it! I wish Sully and Haf all the success and best of luck as they bring this franchise back to being among the perennial contenders, like it used to be when I was a kid.

But Grier did a great job!

To be fair, no one should be grading a rookie class after one season, but on that same token, if you trade up to get a player and use multiple picks, at least that player should be rated highly, and not near the bottom or in the very bottom of the ratings. That’s awful!

I’m a little concerned that we now have a new HC and GM, and they may be inclined to make big splashes for short term success at the expense of long term stability.

This is not the time to make big moves and try to win right away. This is a time to build correctly not sacrifice picks to win in the short term. Don’t trade away picks. Don’t sign big FAs.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Don’t think we have to worry about signing big FAs with our cap situation. And I also don’t think we’re going to be trading draft picks, either… unless it’s to garner MORE draft picks… perhaps even for an early pick in ’27.

  46. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

I don’t think we trade away any picks. If you look at Packers draft history, they covet draft picks, collect and keep them, don’t trade them away. Only last year they seem to have broken their golden rule by trading picks for Parsons. They traded their 1st this year and next year but still have 8 picks this year.

    Each team gets 7 picks, 1 for each round. Packers have had (year-picks): 2025-8, 2024-11, 2023-13, 2022-11, 2021-9, 2020-9, 2019-8, 2018-11, 2017-10.

2016 was the last time they just had their 7 picks and 2004 was the last time they had less than their 7 but still had 6 picks.

The last 10 years, the Packers have had a total of 96 draft picks. That is 26 more picks than the Dolphins had over that same 10 year time frame which also coincides with Grier’s tenure as GM.

  47. Randy's avatar Randy says:

Here’s a local guy for me you guys might want to check out. He’s a WR, so I don’t pay him much attention. But, I know people who think he’s gonna be a productive pro. Bryce Lance from NDSU.

    • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Yeah, he’s been on the radar. Just waiting to see his #’s at the combine or pro day. Draftbuzz projects him to run a 4.6. I have watched him, his play speed seems faster than that. This draft seems to be full of big slower guys. Speed isn’t everything though. I think he is closer to a 4.5 guy than a 4.6 guy.

Sign his free agent brother Trey Lance to compete at QB, then draft him at #111.

You know what, that’s probably why safety, DT, and TE are my favorite positions, because I hate when people say, “Premium positions are the only ones you should take in the first round.” If I’m being honest, the one position I HATE the most taking in the first round is WR. I guess it’s not that people don’t want the Browns HC position. It’s just that they do not want to go through their crazy BS requirements.

Not sure if it is true but the Brown’s are requiring candidates to wear a suit and do crazy homework for both the initial interview and the second one. Also, a personality test and writing an essay.

  62. ElephantRider's avatar ElephantRider says:

Another Packer coach coming in. They are raiding GB.

  63. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

It looks like we’re just waiting on Anthony Weaver. We probably have our guy already at DC but don’t want to lose those picks just in case.

  64. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I think(?) I’m taking Utah RT Spencer Fano off the board for our R1P11 selection. Why? I don’t like his size for a RT (6’6″, 308), his worst games came against ‘stronger teams’ (they were actually WEAK teams in the larger scheme of things: weak opponents), and I believe he’s being over-hyped.

He doesn’t suck, but he’s not worthy of R1P11, IMO… not even close.

  65. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

One of the things I think is important with hiring Bobby Slowick as OC is he knows the players and the language doesn’t change so we can hit the ground running as they say.

  66. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

that draft above with Styles and Thieneman is really interesting

I tend to think Minkah will be here in 2026. And we all know about Jordan Brooks. I think that foursome, the vets and rooks, can make us a strong defense right away

  67. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I don’t expect us to be very good this season. I’m hoping we do the right thing and just go with Ewers and a draftee at QB and whoever wins the QB competition starts. I don’t want to overspend for Malik Willis, and I’m not even sure he’s really much better than Ewers anyway

  68. ElephantRider's avatar ElephantRider says:

SBJ – Will someone please make Weaver a HC so Miami can move on!

  74. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Unfortunately, NFL teams realize that if they hire Weaver they have to send those picks to Miami, so they can play the waiting game too. I’m getting the feeling we won’t be seeing those picks. If he is going to get hired, it will be a week after Miami hires a DC

  75. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

it’s looking to me like Anthony Weaver will not get hired as a HC anywhere this offseason

  76. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Piggy – They are compensatory picks, I guess you’re right. I was thinking they had to come from the team that hires the Coach, but you’re right, they’re just additional picks created by the NFL for these situations

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I think our best shot now is Arizona

yesterday people were reporting they narrowed their candidates down to 3 and weaver was not one of those 3

but he ended up doing a 2nd in person interview either yesterday or today

  77. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Approximately 29 to 36 Miam players are scheduled to become unrestricted free agents (UFAs) in 2026.

That is 54 to 68% of the roster. We are currently over the cap by approx. $30M and we need to fill out 68% of the roster!

Tell me again how great a job Grief did!

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I only want to keep about 2-3 of them….lol

I guess that makes Grier look like he did an even worse job

for me this highlights the timing of the decision to fire MM

new coach, new GM, probably a new QB and probably 20- 40 new faces on the roster

  78. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

The Indian bones under Joe Robbie Stadium will see to it that the curse continues. OF COURSE we will not get the comp picks for Weaver. He will go to the Giant for a season and THEN get his shot at HC so the Dolphins get NOTHING and the NY team get’s the two comp picks….

  79. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

you have to think a 2nd in person interview is beyond what the Rooney rule requires

so AZ seems serious about hiring Weaver

but there are other candidates who are also doing a 2nd interview

hopefully Weaver makes a great impression

I would volunteer to shine his shoes for him if I could

  80. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

I don’t want to overspend for Malik Willis, and I’m not even sure he’s really much better than Ewers anyway

    ———-

I watched Willis and he doesn’t have that great of an arm. I prefer signing maybe Trey Lance and draft a rookie to compete with Ewers.

Lance is coming off a 1yr 2m deal with the Chargers. Could be had for about the same.

  81. sb7mvp's avatar sb7mvp says:

I wish Anthony Weaver would have put me down for a reference.

  82. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Piggy, I like Taurean York’s game but he is small at 5’10, 225 and doesn’t have the frame to get bigger. I don’t see him high on the Dolphins draft board. They like big and fast.

I think top’s on their list for ILB will be Arvell Reese, Sonny Styles, Anthony Hill Jr, Josiah Trotter, CJ Allen and then Jake Golday.

    • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Those are all guys I see going by the end of day 2. One more ILB they could be interested in at the end of the 3rd round is Jaishawn Barham.

This is actually a decent ILB draft when you look at it. Because the Day 3 group has some good prospects also in York, Lander Barton, Kyle Louis, Red Murdock, Aiden Fisher, Bryce Boettcher and more.

    • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

There is one more guy I can’t think of his name. He’s a big fast ILB who, like Sonny Styles, moved from Safety to ILB. Dammit, I can’t think of his name.

    • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Kendal Daniels from Oklahoma is his name. He’s 6’5, 242, started at safety for 3 years at Oklahoma State then transferred to Oklahoma and moved to ILB. He’s still learning the position but could end up a draft steal on day 3.

  83. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

I think Chris Johnson is a fav of many with our 2nd round pick.

  84. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

So the Bills promoted their OC Joe Brady to be their HC.

  85. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Duke and QB Darian Mensah came to a settlement agreement. Mensah will now be the next Miami Hurricane QB for 2026.

  86. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

    Damn, he’s shorter than me.

With the NFL combine just around the corner and the draft just a few months away, QB Diego Pavia is hoping to make a strong case to land on a team this spring.

Ahead of the Senior Bowl, the Vanderbilt quarterback’s measurements were revealed. He came in at 5’9 7/8″ and 198 pounds.

  87. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I found a BALLHAWK zone CB for us on day 3: Hezekiah Masses. 6’1″, 185, 5 INTs, 13 PBUs. He reads the QB’s eyes like nobody else in this class.

Unfortunately, he also gave up 4 TDs last season. That could be attributed to his tendency to jump routes and probably biting on double-moves. He’ll need to be taught some discipline at the pro level, but he’s got ball skills.

    • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

LOL, I just did another mock draft that I didn’t post. I was looking for a specific players name that I couldn’t remember, ILB Kendal Daniels.

I took Masses in the 3rd round of that mock. I don’t think he lasts to the 4th.

  88. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

    Pigster and Herd,

I see there’s a senior CB for Marshall named BOOGIE TROTTER. He had 5 INTs last season, but his 5’9″, 170 pound frame isn’t going to bode well for him at the NFL level.

    Luv the name, though! 😀

  89. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Another RT to keep an eye on, especially early day 3 is Notre Dame RT Aamil Wagner. Hearing he was the best OT all week at the Shrine Bowl practices. He measured in at a chiseled 6’5, 302 with the frame to add 10 pounds easy, good arm length also.

  90. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Keep an eye on SE Louisiana DE/Edge Kaleb Proctor, 6’1, 275. He was one of the best edge players at the Shine Bowl practices. If he scores well at the combine, he could be a day 3 option for us.

  91. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

My first look at Emmanuel McNeil-Warren, S, Toledo. Man, this kid is freakish! So much to like about him in both pass and run-Defense. I also see Ryder did a video on him already, I must have missed it. I’ll check it out…

  92. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Here’s Ryder’s take on EMW, in case ya missed it like I had. Yes, he’s going to kill the Combine. This guy is an athletic FREAK. He just leap-frogged over Dillon Thieneman in my book… and I REALLY like Thieneman.

  93. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

My no trade BPA draft (sorta)

    11. Sonny Styles LB Ohio State

    43. Emmanuel McNeil-Warren S Toledo

    75. Max Iheanachor OT Arizona State

    87. Brian Parker II OG Duke

    90. Oscar Delp TE Georgia

    111. Derrick Moore EDGE Michigan

    149. Domani Jackson CB Alabama

    227. Dominic Zvada K Michigan

I just took the highest rated player left on the consensus draft board, UNLESS it was a RB or DT in which case I chose the next non-RB or DT on the board.

  94. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

M, I really like EMW. I think he would be a good BPA pick for us in the 2nd round.

I have been looking at some day 3 safeties just in case. One guy I like mid to late day 3 is Ole Miss safety Wydett Williams Jr., 6’2, 205. Nothing special about him, I just think he plays a real solid game. Had 3 INT’s and 9 PD’s the last season at Ole Miss. He was a transfer from ULM.

  95. sb7mvp's avatar sb7mvp says:

Hezekiah Masses is a sweetass name

  96. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

    Why I always “waste” a pick on a kicker or punter ever mock;

As a top-rated specialist prospect, Dominic Zvada K set a Michigan record in 2024 with a 95.5% field goal percentage, including 7-for-7 on kicks over 50 yards. During the 2024 season, Zvada converted 21-of-22 field goal attempts (95.5%), setting a new single-season record for the Michigan Wolverines

Known for his accuracy from long range, Zvada has a career-long of 56 yards.

Zvada is projected to be one of the top kickers in the 2026 NFL draft class.

WAY better than paying a kicker we didn’t miss when put on IR $3.75M plus 500K roster bonus!

  97. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Damn this global warming! They are predicting low temps in the upper 30’s in Miami on Monday and colder the more you go inland from the coast.

    Current top players I like…

    SAF-1. Caleb Downs, 2. Emmanuel McNeil-Warren, 3. Dillon Thieneman

CB-1. Mansoor Delane, 2. Keith Abney II, 3. Chris Johnson, 4. D’Angelo Ponds

LB-1. Sonny Styles, 2. Anthony Hill Jr, 3. CJ Allen

DT-1. Kayden McDonald, 2. Lee Hunter

OT-1. Francis Mauigoa, 2. Spencer Fano, 3. Max Iheanachor

OG-1. Vega Ioane, 2. Chase Bisontis, 3. Emmanuel Pregnon, 4. Keylan Rutledge

TE-1. Kenyon Sadiq, 2. Oscar Delp, 3. Eli Raridon

EDGE-1. Rueben Bain Jr, 2. Arvell Reese, 3. David Bailey (all 3 probably go top 10, so 3rd and 4th rounds are where I think we look at this position)

WR- (no 1st round for me, thank you) (probably 3rd round and beyond this year for the position)

RB- (no day 1 or day 2) (day 3 guys most likely…)

QB- (most likely no day 1 or day 2, though one of our late 3rd round picks is possible) (day 3 guy most likely…)
