The Miami Dolphins Rookie Draft Class reported to camp July 21st. There was an expected move, however, 3rd RD pick WR Chris Bell from Louisville was placed on the Active Non Football Injury list. We most likely won’t see WR Chris Bell until the 2nd half of the season or later, and that’s fine. Let him fully heal, and we’ll see him when he’s healthy and ready to go. He’s going to most likely be our best WR when he’s good to go, and probably the most impactful, and there is certainly no reason to rush the timetable on his return. The one guy who never gets any positive spin is the first WR we drafted in 2026 is 3rd RD Pick (#75) WR Caleb Douglas. I remember clearly the sentiment here, and in general as that pick went down. “We could have taken him 60 picks later”, or “OMG, what a reach!!!”. While WR Chris Bell is healing, WR Caleb Douglas has an opportunity to grab some serious playing time and earn getting the ball thrown his way. From what I’ve heard, QB Malik Willis likes Douglas and has already developed a rapport. That’s great news, or hype, but looking at the WR room, do we really want WR Jalen Tolbert or WR Tutu Atwell getting the majority of targets?
Let’s switch gears for a moment. Looking at our draft class, there are two players who should be starting immediately, and that’s both 1st RD picks, LG Kadyn Proctor (Pick #12) and CB Chris Johnson (Pick #27). Where CB Chris Johnson lines up the most doesn’t really matter, he will probably be on the field all the time on defense, either at LCB or covering the slot. Johnson has that versatility. As opposed to last year’s first OL taken (OG Jonah Savaiinaea), Proctor must play like a starting caliber OG or the Chris Grier “Boo Birds” will turn on JES real fast. The Dolphins gave ILB Jordyn Brooks a nice 3 year contract extension, 3YR/$51M/$35M Guaranteed. No doubt Brooks earned that, but it does muddy as to where 2nd RD Pick (#43) Texas Tech LB Jacob Rodriguez will play, and how much. Also on the roster is ILB Tyrel Dodson who was 2nd in total tackles last season with 129, had 5 sacks, 1 FF and 1 FR. With Brooks under contract 3 more years, if anyone is going to get moved, Dodson figures to be that player.
Besides the 2 rookies already mentioned as the ones who will be the biggest impacts, Proctor and Johnson, who is the next guy up? When you look at our defense, one thing stands out for sure, is where is the pass rush going to come from? I’m not sure any one player we drafted will be the leading sack or pressure guy (For those of you that worship “pressures’). We did draft 2 players that could potentially be pass rushers, 4th RD Pick (#130) OLB Trey Moore 6’3 250 from Texas and then 7th RD Pick (#238) DE Max Llewellyn 6’5 263 from Iowa. In addition those two drafted pass rushers, we picked up as an UDFA a guy who has potential to surpass both of these guys, and that’s DE Mason Reiger 6’5 250 from Louisville and Wisconsin. Reiger had 8 sacks in 3 seasons with Louisville, he missed the ’24 season with a knee injury. In 2025, Reiger went to Wisconsin and recorded 5 sacks. We brought in a bunch of veteran pass rushers like LB Josh Uche (PHI), David Ojabo (BAL) and Robert Beal (SF). the last two have 5.5 sacks combined over 7 seasons, so despite being veteran players, these guys haven’t gotten it done. Uche has 21.5 sacks in his career, but 11.5 of them came in 2022 with the New England Patriots, and he has a total of 8 sacks over the last 3 seasons.
Another rookie that may end up getting a good share of playing time is 6th RD Pick (#200) OG D.J. Campbell. Listen, we all hope last year’s 2nd RD trade up for OG Jonah Savaiinaea plays well this season, and puts the doubters to sleep by having an excellent season. In addition to Savaiinaea playing well, we also hope that RT Austin Jackson stays healthy all season and plays well. If one or both of those don’t happen, it’s very possible we see OG DJ Campbell move to one of the OG spots. We do have OT/OG Jamaree Salyer who we picked up from the Chargers who can step in at either OG or RT, but my guess is they’d rather keep Salyer as a swing tackle, so if Jackson was injured I’d say Salyer moves to RT, but if Savaiinaea is playing poorly, Campbell would get the chance to play RG, where he played 4 seasons at Texas.
On defense, it’s an interesting situation. Our ILB corps could be one of the best in the NFL with ILB’s Jordyn Brooks, Tyrel Dodson and rookie Jacob Rodriguez. The defensive line is a mix of 2nd year players DT’s Kenneth Grant, Jordan Phillips and Zeek Biggers, along veteran DE Zach Sieler. It appears on the surface that a bunch of our rookies will be situational players, like pass rushers Trey Moore, Max Llewelyn and Mason Reiger (Provided they all make the 53), as well as tweeners like LB/S Kyle Louis and S Michael Taafe. Kyle Louis is an interesting guy who may get a large role in passing downs either as a blitzer or a cover guy because of his quickness and speed. The secondary looks like it will be LCB (R) Chris Johnson, RCB Juju Brents, and 2nd year CB Jason Marshall. At safety my guess it will be Dante Trader and some combination of Lonnie Johnson Jr., Kyle Louis and Michael Taafe. When I say combination, I think playing time will be affected by each players effectiveness in certain situations.
I’ve yet to mention one guy who I think will be playing an awful lot of football for our Dolphins in 2026, and that’ rookie TE Will Kacmarek who was a 3rd RD Pick (#87). I know many of you love TE Greg Dulcich, but Dulcich doesn’t block, and Kacmarek does. I don’t we just drafted a battering ram on the O-line, although I hope he’s that for sure! I think Kacmarek will be a part of the passing game. If Dulcich is on the field in 2 TE sets, the defense will naturally flow to Dulcich, which should leave Kacmarek open. If he can take advantage of that, Kacmarek could see a bunch of targets. To add, with so much uncertainty on the O-line, especially the right side with Savaiinaea and Jackson, having an excellent blocking TE is truly not only a blessing, but a necessity. The last thing our QB needs, whether it’s Malik Willis or Quinn Ewers is to have defenders putting them on the ground in less than 2 seconds. Which rookie overall will have the biggest impact in your view?

It looks like Jacas has missed the entire off season, both on-field and classroom work. He is WAY behind at this point. Most rookies get an injury waiver until their contracts are signed. NE was not comfortable giving him one and he doesn’t like the offset language in the contract so they are at an impasse.

Speaking of concert’s, the wife and I went with some friends last night to The Warf outdoor concert arena in Orange Beach, Alabama for the Luke Bryan concert. He put on a really good show and I like that he played a good bit of his old stuff.
I recommend going to an outdoor Luke Bryan concert when it is really hot outside. He has a huge female fanbase and nothing says “America” more than seeing thousands of women in a very short skirt or Daisy Dukes wearing cowboy boots!

With our 2 drafted rookie TE’s as the only TE’s under contract next year, I am looking at the draft class next year and it is not very good after the first 2. Oregon’s Jamari Johnson and LSU’s Trey’Dez Green are clearly the best and will go late 1st to very early 2nd round. I don’t want to spend an early pick on a TE with glaring needs also at RT, Safety, CB and Edge.
Then there is a big drop off. I am going out on a limb and say the #3 TE will be Benjamin Brahmer who transferred to PSU from Iowa State with the HC and QB Rocco Becht. He’s a big target at 6’7, 255 and a good route runner but he has really no YAC ability. Actually, I think both Iowa State TE’s transferred to PSU.
My preference would be to wait until 4th or 5th round. Two I like but are on the short side are Terrance Carter, 6’2, 242 who is a decent blocker and a good receiving threat. The other is Jeremiah Halsey from Duke at 6’3, 252 who is a good inline (65% of snaps lined up inline) receiving TE with good YAC ability. He’s hard to bring down.
The rest are question marks for me heading into this college season.

Why does everyone assume that Dulcich is the automatic starter and assume an extension? 335 yards and one TD is not that exciting guys. It’s not something that screams “WE HAVE OUR GUY!” It just kind of mumbles “we have a tight end” 335y yards puts him at #34 TE. 1 TD puts him tied for 5oth in TD’s.
We DEFINITELY need an upgrade. (And probably have at least one already on the roster)

Clelin Ferrell, huh? I wanted us to sign him after he bombed with the Raidahz, reuniting him with fellow Clemson DT Christian Wilkins in ’23… but that was several years ago.
If Ferrell can set an edge, he just might stick with us. However, I think he’s washed up and is just camp fodder. JMO

He is definitely a good signing. He didn’t start any games last season, appeared in 9 and had 4 sacks. (the same amount that Chop had in 15 games) 6’4 – 265 he has the makeup.

Jalen Carter gets paid. If I’m a dolphins coach, I require Grant watch Jalen Carter tape every day. I think he has the potential to play in the same manner.

Steve, I don’t think they made the 53, but 2025 UDFA’s who got some playing time after being elevated to the 53 were WR Theo Wease – 3 games and CB Ethan Robinson – 2 games with special teams snaps only. Ethan Robinson is currently our #2 NB/Slot CB behind Jason Marshall.
Three other 2025 UDFA’s who were on the practice squad but never played a regular season snap in 2025 and are still on the current roster are DT Alex Huntley who is currently the #7 DT on the depth chart. Next is WR AJ Henning who looks to be #10 on the current depth chart out of 12 WR’s. The 3rd is OG Josh Priebe who is listed as the #2 LG behind Proctor.
Other UDFA’s from previous years still on the roster and made the 53 are CB Ethan Bonner a 2023 UDFA. Bonner has appeared in games each of his 3 seasons. He played 117 defensive snaps and 358 special team snaps over the 3 seasons. Bonner is currently the #3 LCB behind Chris Johnson and Darrell Baker Jr. He’s the #6 boundary CB on the depth chart overall. Then there is the #2 Center Andrew Meyer a UDFA from 2024. Meyer started 1 game in 2025 playing the whole game.
There are 7 players currently on the roster who the Dolphins signed as UDFA’s from previous seasons. Again, that’s 2023 Bonner, 2024-Meyer and 2025 Wease, Robinson, Huntley, Henning and Priebe.

Offensive lineman Jamaree Salyer, wide receiver Caleb Douglas and edge rushers Robert Beal Jr. and Cameron Goode were all back to practicing after they were either rehabbing injuries during the offseason workout program or injured during OTAs and minicamp. Salyer, though, appeared to get poked in the eye on one play.
As it was the first practice of camp Wednesday, pads were not yet worn. So, the physicality of drills was limited.
— LB Willie Gay Jr. made the highlight play of practice, breaking on a route to the sideline from his linebacker post and snagging the interception with one hand on the throw from QB Cam Miller.
— QB Malik Willis had some zip on a short out pattern to rookie WR Caleb Douglas, who showed he can quickly turn up the field once the ball is in his hands. Douglas later elevated to snag a pass against CB JuJu Brents.
— At one point, Willis got it going with the tight ends, completing consecutive passes to Ben Sims and Greg Dulcich.
— Edge Chop Robinson pressured Willis on his first pass, which was broken up by Brents.
— CB Jason Marshall Jr. broke up a pass later in practice.
— Willis’ first completion in the team setting of practice went to rookie slot WR Kevin Coleman Jr. off play action with Coleman crossing on an intermediate route.
— Rookie S Michael Taaffe intercepted QB Quinn Ewers in a Texas-on-Texas play. Ewers then threw what should have been another interception one throw later, but it was dropped by CB Ethan Bonner. As the team switched to No. 3 QB Cam Miller after, Alex Austin had a ball thrown right at him and dropped it.
— The Dolphins had early inside-run plays in 11-on-11. Achane was stuffed on the right side, but Jaylen Wright found running room on the left side later.
— Ewers picked up right where he left off with his chemistry with WR Theo Wease Jr., finding him over the middle on his first pass of camp. Ewers later connected with veteran WR Jalen Reagor.
— Edge Cameron Goode and DT Matthew Butler converged on Ewers for a practice sack.
— There was a play where RB Ollie Gordon II had the ball punched from him on a carry. DE David Ojabo may have forced the fumble, as he received the congratulations after.
— Gordon came back with a vengeance the next play, hitting a hole to the left side with conviction.
— Rookie TE Seydou Traore made a catch early in drills from No. 3 QB Cam Miller.
— RB Carlos Washington Jr. showed a nice burst in space through the right side on a handoff.
— DT Jordan Phillips was flagged for encroachment on one play.
— The team went through a brief turnover forcing/prevention period early in practice. Skill players worked on ball security with teammates trying to punch the ball out. Defenders drilled forcing the ball out in different ways conducive to positions they figure to be in either on the defensive line, at linebacker or in the secondary.
— Hafley, who has a background in coaching defensive backs and was a defensive coordinator with Green Bay before landing the head job in Miami, spent time with both sides of the ball, but he watched cornerback footwork very closely during one individual period.
— WR Malik Washington was seen bobbling a punt return with no one running at him during a special teams period. He still secured the football, but the bobble occurred for long enough that an oncoming defender could’ve dislodged the football in a collision.
— WR Chris Bell and CB Darrell Baker Jr. were seen watching practice on the side as Bell is on the non-football injury list and Baker is on the physically-unable-to-perform list. They weren’t actively doing rehab assignments during practice, but may have done their physical work prior to drills. Baker watched attentively during at least one cornerback drill, mimicking motions of the players involved in the drill.
— New Dolphins DE Clelin Ferrell is wearing No. 98 with the team.

LB Willie Gay Jr. started off camp just how he did last year, making plays in practice. After being a standout in his first camp with the Dolphins, Gay made the biggest play Wednesday, picking off a pass with one hand.

If QB Quinn Ewers wants to push Malik Willis and give Dolphins management something to think about instead of just crowning Willis the starter, it wasn’t a good start. He threw an interception to former Texas teammate Michael Taaffe and followed it up by throwing a would-be interception that was dropped by Ethan Bonner.
A day before the start of training camp on Tuesday, the Dolphins hosted a number of players for workouts, including quarterback Jack Plummer. The 6-foot-5 passer led the UFL in passing yards while winning MVP honors this past season after throwing for 2,189 yards and 17 touchdowns with one interception for the Orlando Storm.
The Dolphins also hosted the likes of QB Austin Reed, RB Clyde Edwards-Helaire, WRs Elijhah Badger, Elijah Cooks, Jakobie Keeney-James and Tyler Vaughns, along with tackle Ben Te Kura.

I agree. PFF said his best graded game was their 2024 upset win over Ohio State in the season finale. That is saying a lot with him going up against that Ohio State DL with Tyliek Williams and Kayden McDonald that year.

We seemed to reach quite a bit in the draft but they were players JEC wanted so, again, I’ll wait and see. After all, once the draft is over and they are on the team, does it matter if they were picked in the 3rd or the 5th round? I don’t think so.
I have at least a little bit of excitement looking forward to see what this year brings.
I am in wait-and-see mode with very low expectations for this year.

Zach Sieler: Zeek did it last year. I did it in my previous year. I think it’s a great thing, we always say the more you can do. That’s a big thing, and Zeek’s done an amazing job. He’s out there, he’s at nose, he’s at three tech. So to jump all around the field out there is exciting. It’s cool seeing him grow.

I said before that I thought he is the best passer in the class and still is until one of the others proves otherwise. I just hate that he is only 6’1. Of course that makes him taller than our current starting QB and taller than Bryce Young and Kyler Murray.
Yeah, he has had some stellar WR’s, but if you watch his ball placement and the way he scans the field he is really good.
Chambliss is another I like but he is only 6′ and he is in the top 5 of deep passers.

M13, I don’t know why Byrum Brown doesn’t get more love. He’s a big dude. Not that he’s real tall big, but he’s 6’3 and built thick at 235 pounds but he can run like Lamar Jackson. He’s beaten ranked SEC teams before. We will see how he does being in the SEC full time.
I currently have him as my #8 QB because of that running ability. I would like to see more of the underneath accuracy on the crossing stuff from him and him not to look to run so quickly. I have seen him try to bail and run to soon.
Lastly, he needs to learn to take care of himself a little more on the field. He loves to lower the boom on DB’s trying to tackle him. While that is fun to watch it’s going to wear on his body.

Bijan Robinson, Jahmyr Gibbs Holding In
As prime contract extension candidates, the Falcons’ Bijan Robinson and the Lions’ Jahmyr Gibbs could become the NFL’s highest-paid running backs in the near future. Both players are present at training camp, but neither practiced on Wednesday. Their on-field absences are related to the business side of the game.

Since 2025 second-round pick Jonah Savaiinaea was such a disaster at left guard, the Dolphins have kicked him over to the opposite guard spot, where, in a perfect world, Jamaree Salyer will beat him out. That leaves 12th overall pick Kadyn Proctor to take the reins at Savaiinaea’s prior position.
NO! In a perfect world Savaiinaea will develop into a great RG. THAT would be a perfect world Asshat!
Proctor played left tackle at Alabama, so he’s adjusting to a new spot in the trenches in his own right. Although he’s quite raw technique-wise, Proctor did just turn 21 in June, and he has an enormous 6’7″, 352-pound frame to work with.
Savaiinaea was ALSO just 21 when he played last year.
Plus, Proctor gets the benefit of playing between an ascending left tackle in Patrick Paul and a top-flight center in Aaron Brewer. They’re easily the Dolphins’ two best offensive linemen and can mask any growing pains Proctor endures in his maiden season in Miami.
Savaiinaea also “benefited” from playing in the same spot, between the same players. We’ll see how it goes this time.

Not to be offensive to any ‘believers” on here, but the kid needs to start putting more on himself and less on God. There are 22 player on the field at a time and God does not pick teams.

While the offense had a handful of productive runs — and those basically involve simply getting through the line of scrimmage because there was no tackling — it was not a good for the defense by any measure.

Rock, is this your reason you hate the wide 9?
Yeah, 5 tech is much closer to center and naturally clogs the middle more. 9 puts the guys 5 yards outside. That’s 5 yards for the RB to run through.
Plus, the 9 is really sprinting to the QB and tend to run past the RB on outside runs.
You need good ILB and SS. Wide 9 is used by most teams. It’s not like it’s the only formation teams use but it always comes down to your talent.
BBM, I am just going off of what I saw the Dolphins do with the wide 9 in the past. We SUCKED at stopping the run when we ran it. Like bottom of the league bad.

Pretty much agree with all the above, but I expect to see tangible growth from him this season. We’ll see what happens with young Byrum, but I suspect (and hope) he’s the guy that nobody is talking about now who will climb the draft boards when it’s all said and done.
He seems very well-grounded as a person (his faith), very confident and not cocky, a real team-first guy (leadership), very articulate, thoughtful, and charismatic. I say this based on about half-a-dozen interviews I’ve seen.
When it comes to the QB position, I feel the need to vet them on the intangibles from the neck up. I should do that for EVERY position, but I only have so many hours in a day outside of work and I’d rather watch tape.
Why do I mention this regarding QBs? Because I feel there is a very strong possibility we draft one early (1st-3rd rounds) in the ’27 Draft… at least at THIS very moment in time. Who knows, maybe we surprise the NFL this year and don’t feel the need to draft a QB early in ’27. We shall see!

Based on our ’26 Draft class, I’d say that’s a no-brainer. Not to mention, our WR corps sucks! 😉

Wide-9 is only effective via speed-rushers on the EDGE… that’s the only reason it’s even deployed: to overwhelm with speed outside of the OTs and get the QB. The way I see it, we don’t have that speed on the EDGE at the moment.

Today it’s “Greg Dulcich is already giving the Dolphins a reason to extend him beyond 2026” (WHAT!? He has literally caught 6 passes in 2 practices, one of which the team released a video of. He hasn’t shown ANYTHING to say we should extend him, it’s two fucking practices!)
