Wedge Scouting Report: Benardrick McKinney

Benardrick McKinney, Anthony Williams IIIWedge ID

After watching the Dolphins season end in 2014 – an alien needs a break.  I just needed to float away among the stars.  I saw black holes and quasars.  I saw stars exploding in space.  I floated through space and time and thought to myself…what do the Dolphins need?  And then it hit me like a satellite gone rogue…

McKinneyTacklesWedge

The Dolphins need tackling!  What better way to address that then to draft an inside linebacker.  Many scouts say Benardrick McKinney  is the best inside linebacker in the draft.  Many expect him to be a top 20 pick.  On the other hand some scouts don’t think he is even worth a pick in the first two rounds of the draft.  So what gives?  Is McKinney a first rounder or not?

BMcKinney2

Well if there is one thing McKinney can do its tackle.  He is a very good tackler and prone to a big hit now and then.  McKinney has natural instincts and quick feet.  Qualities that make a great MLB.  I’ve seen him compared to a poor man’s Brian Urlacher.

NCAA Football: Alabama at Mississippi State

One of the reasons MSU was so stingy about scoring in 2014, tied for 10th in Division 1, was McKinney’s play.  He was the undeniable leader of the MSU defense.  The 6’5, 250 pound junior had over 200 tackles in his college career.  He also rushed the QB occasionally getting 7.5 sacks in his career at MSU.

His athleticism is something to behold.  He is rumored to run a 4.5 40 with a vertical leap of over 34 inches.

NCAA Football: Alabama-Birmingham at Mississippi State

If he is a freakish athlete who can stop the run and rush the passer, what’s with the skepticism about drafting McKinney in the first?  Well, some scouts think he is inconsistent in space and not very good in pass defense.  Some say he is a two down thumper.  Even if that is true, I don’t want him thumping me.  Other scouts say he is better suited as a 3-4 OLB.

BMcKinney5

I think McKinney will be an asset to any any defense.  If McKinney was an Alien Weapon of Destruction, McKinney would be a Lunar Steamroller.  Rolling over ballcarriers in his path!

  8. Try Pod says:

    Tim,
I was obviously being silly. I thought that perhaps there were more questions than just the 3 you laid out. Were mine as relevant to the blog as yours? No, but were mine more entertaining? Well, no, apparently not.
Truth be told, at this point on the season I can’t talk about this crap. Draft upon draft young draft, fix this and fix this and fix this, answer this and answer this and answer this, every day, multiple times.. I just can’t do it.

  9. jahndoh says:

    Wooot!!!! ‘Sub Rhino!

  10. jahndoh says:

Tim, I don’t get it, what’s wrong with folks wanting Varga late in this draft? What do you have against him?

  11. dbolt48 says:

McKinney reminds me of Dansby when he came out of Auburn.

  12. Mike E. says:

Rhino – Welcome! Glad you finally made it here, even though you will be scarcely seen until your competition season is over.

  13. Mike E. says:

Nice job on this article. I will not be disappointed if we go with McKinney in the least. We need some talent on this defense, someone who can actually make tackles when they arrive at the ballcarrier. Our 1st pick is so up in the air, it could be any position right now, OT, DT, CB, LB, WR, S, anything IMO but QB, RB, DE or TE. We might take a DE/OLB hybrid (Again!), but most likely he would be converted to a LB, unless we switch to a 3-4. That puts a bunch of those bigger OLB/DE guys into play, and there are some good ones in this draft.

  14. professor lou says:

Here’s McKinney’s tackling stats over the 3 years he’s been at Miss St:
    45 solo, 57 asst: total 102
    42 solo, 28 asst: total 70
    27 solo, 29 asst: total 56
Huge red flag; especially the solo tackles.

  15. wyoming85 says:

    Paul Dawson, ILB, TCU
    Height: 5-10. Weight: 240.
    Projected 40 Time: 4.69.
2014 – 128 tackles, 18.5 tackles for a loss, five sacks, two forced fumbles, five passes batted and four interceptions.
2013 – 91 tackles with 10 tackles for a loss, one interception and three passes broken up.

    Just sayin! 🙂

  16. wyoming85 says:

    Eric Kendricks, ILB/OLB, UCLA
    Height: 6-0. Weight: 230.
    Projected 40 Time: 4.69.

2014 – 149 tackles, 11.5 tackles for a loss, four sacks, two passes broken up, three interceptions and one forced fumble
2013 – 105 tackles, four tackles for a loss and an interception.
2012 – 149 tackles with six tackles for a loss, two sacks, four passes broken up, two forced fumbles and one blocked kick

  17. Mike E. says:

Wyo – I’ve been checking out Paul Dawson. Looks like a good prospect, another guy who can play inside or outside.

    • professor lou says:

Dawson is another guy who moves well to the ball and is quick to recognize the play at the snap. No hesitation from this guy.

  18. jahndoh says:

I don’t know that he even saw it, but Tim; I was being silly last night regarding Vargas. Sometimes you think you’re being funny then the next day you read it and think…meh…not my best work. LOL…

  19. jahndoh says:

    I like Kendricks!

    • The Flying Pig says:

I figured you would chime in about the UCLA prospect

      Wedge has scouted him too
      and Perryman

      expect a full alien report

  20. jahndoh says:

Lou, is there a reason for that dropoff? It’s not neccesarily a red flag if there’s a reason …ie…injury, position/scheme change….that sort of thing. But I’m actually asking because I have no idea.

    • professor lou says:

No injury data; he did miss a game this past season but other than that the numbers have declined two years in a row which is something that bothers me especially when we are talking about one of the stingiest defenses in the SEC. Why did HIS numbers drop?
I don’t have an answer. Everything I read about him is about his size and his straightline speed but everyone agrees his lateral movement isn’t very good and his pass coverage isn’t the best either.
I’m not claiming to be an expert because the consensus is he should go in the first rd so I really can’t argue with it but it scares the shit out of me. It reminds me of Ayers when he was coming out.

  21. Ken says:

Nice job again Wedge. We need this alien in our FO scouting department.

    _______________________________________________
Somehow Tim got it in his head that he is another John Kuhn without understanding that Varga is nothing like John Kuhn.

  23. jahndoh says:

Kendricks is everything that I think Dickey and Philbin appreciate. He’s a hard worker, he’s a leader, he has GREAT football instincts, former team captain, Butkus award winner, Lott award winner and his older brother is already a starter in the NFL for the Eagles.

Ken, my son wants to be a business lawyer, what advice do you have for him? He speaks Japanese fluently.
    ____________________________________________
I don’t really do business law. Most of it is transactional in nature. Meaning business contracts. Drafting contracts is pretty tedious stuff. It would drive me crazy if I had to do it. He may be better off getting an MBA. Having fluency in a second language can be a very marketable skill in business probably more so than in law.

  26. Ken says:

Going back to Varga. I have watched him play for 4 years and the kid is really talented. The last 3 years Yale ran a read option offense. He would transition seamlessly if we picked him. Yes he has to adjust to the higher level of competition but having seen a lot of him I don’t think he would be able to.

    • Ken says:

I don’t think he will have a problem being able to transition^ That changes the meaning a little

    • The Flying Pig says:

I would think he can be a short yardage back for us

Its funny that there are 2 days 3 prospects from Yale and Harvard this year
(Varga from Yale and Hodges from Harvard )

Last year Hickey took some chances at guys from smaller schools in day 3
I think Hickey will take a long look at both guys

  27. The Flying Pig says:

There will be a Wedge report on Kendricks guys
    and Perryman too
I already saved them to the system ut the reality is there are a lot of options for us

I don;t think McKinney deserves to be the 14th pick

but late first to mid 2nd round – he would be a great pick
I really think Kendricks, McKinney and Perryman should have similar grades

    I actually like Perryman best
    CBS has the LBs ranked
    1. Kendricks
    2. Perryman
    3. McKinney

which changed in the last few weeks

    Which one will go first?
    (Piggy Shrugs)
I would be excited to take whichever is left in the 2nd round though

they will all make a defense better

    • professor lou says:

Stephone Anthony of Clemson has been a more consistent player at the LB position than McKinney. Don’t understand why he’s projected so much lower.
Now McKinney is a 2nd rd projection. Late 2nd for that matter.

      • The Flying Pig says:

CBS has McKinney at 57th best prospect
        and Anthony at 139

        I don;t know why
But McKinney received a lot of attention based on MSU’s season
And he was the undisputable leader of the D
And they were a pretty good D

So its possible McKinney is being elevated a bit based on team production

  28. jahndoh says:

Things going well Ken, but I can relate to busy. Just this week I did a 1600 mile roundtrip to OR and back and next week I have a shitload of work to do before I leave for a surf trip to Micronesia for my buddy’s 40th B-day.

No complaints about that one though. Happy to have that be the reason I’m so busy before I go. 🙂

  29. professor lou says:

I was just thinking; are gay people allowed to sign up for StraightTalk wireless?

  30. professor lou says:

Clemson had the 5th best defense against the run and 2 against the pass in 2014.

  31. Ken says:

    Gotta run. BBL. Peace.

  32. Silly Tim says:

I have nothing against Varga, I just find it funny how everyone now has him in their mocks in the 5th and 6th rd as if he’s a must have, but he’ll go that late.

Ken, I also said a couple of weeks ago I must have confused Varga as a different type of back with someone else. I read somewhere that a back in the draft was compared to Kuhn and I thought it was Varga.

    • jahndoh says:

I don’t get how 5th or 6th round projections equals “must have”? It’s just a guy that a lot of us like for whatever reason (Senior Bowl week is my reason) and we think it’d be fun if he became a fin. I felt that way about Soliai coming out. I try to pick a couple later round guys to root for every offseason in hopes one of them ends up on the fins. Makes me enjoy watching them develop all the more.

  33. Silly Tim says:

Then just play Mike, and don’t stop until the whistle.

Report: Mike Wallace recently met with Dennis Hickey

  34. Randy says:

    Don’t like him. Next!

  35. Mike E. says:

I’m glad that Hickey and Wallace met, although I would have liked Philbin to have been there, and Tannehill and as well. Not that it’s up to me or anything, but I think those guys should have been there. Put everything on the table, and see if all are on the same page, and if not, if they can get on the same page. If that can’t happen, then it’s time to move on from Wallace.

    • Silly Tim says:

I’m sure that will happen if it hasn’t already, mainly with Philbin. Not sure meeting with Tannehill at this time carries any weight, first he has to go through the top brass because they decide if he stays or goes.

      • Mike E. says:

I’d like to know, and I suppose you could just ask him beforehand, if Tannehill wants Mike to be here.

  36. Mike E. says:

    Tim

The Senior Bowl is a helluva lot more than just a game. The practices all week sometimes tell more about a player than any game, and even watching all the college games. You get to see these guys work in individual drills against good competition, and it’s stuff you can’t see even if you watch a game. I wish we could see every player in the draft participate in those practice drills.

  37. Randy says:

Very bad precedent to set having one player giving input on another player’s standing with the team in “official” meetings. Tanny has no business in any meetings. if they want to, they can get his input in other ways.

    • Mike E. says:

I disagree Randy. Tannehill is your franchise QB whether you want to think he is or not, and you want your QB to be on the same page as your WR that you’re paying a gazillion to. If they really are trying to decide as to whether to keep Wallace or not, I would want to know where my QB stands on that, and if he feels like both he and the team can look past what happened, and tale Mike back.

  38. Randy says:

    Tim,
Yeah, he doesn’t look like a #14 pick to me…and he probably won’t be there in the 2nd…given what others are saying about his draft slot.

I’d pass unless he actually is there in the second.

    • The Flying Pig says:

He may be there in the 2nd
I don’t really like him or any other lbs at 14
But after a trade down or in the 2nd

      And we need LBs

  39. jahndoh says:

So it was an all-star game that impressed everyone?
    ————————————————————————————–
Is that a problem? (even though I clearly said the WEEK of the Sr. Bowl is why I like him) We’re talking about a guy that folks want as a late rounder. If he had blue chip pedigree we’d be talking about him in the top 10. You’re on a weird campaign with this guy Tim.

    • Silly Tim says:

Not really it was just a question. For instance, M13 likes borderline talents before the draft, during the season when they are on other teams, or not on a team and 3-4 years later. LOL

  40. olddolphan says:

DID SOMEBODY SAY Dr. Rhino IS, or soon will be, on board?? – – REALLY looking forward to his comments.

Well, the Great Seasons Ticket issue is STILL IN LIMBO!! –Dolphins’ rep told me I’d have my info package “either Thursday or Friday, Saturday at the very latest!” –Well, tomorrow’s MONDAY and I STILL DON’T HAVE IT!! – -Will have to call them AGAIN tomorrow!!

THIS ILLUSTRATES HOW, under Steve Ross, the Dolphins organization has failed to do the “little things” that most NFL season ticket holders take for granted. – – Issues with a lack of security in the parking lot near the end of the game have permanently led my wife to cease going to Dolphin home games. Two years ago my tickets did NOT arrive until AFTER the first game, even though I was PAID IN FULL by February. Last year the ticket reader as we entered the stadium said “My tickets are no good!” AND, my written and emailed complaints on these and other issues have received NO REPLY from the front office. I COULD list other issues (such as a lack of game day programs and the lack of individual game tickets for season ticket holders, among many others) but you get the idea. From the top down, this is a mismanaged organization run by a guy who spends most of his time in New York, AND IT SHOWS!! NEVER had any of these problems when Huizenga ran the Dolphins. Indeed, renewing my seasons tickets was the easiest thing in the world to do.

“AMERICAN SNIPER” is one of the best movies ever made. Hope all of you get a chance to see it. I consider it CLINT EASTWOOD’S crowning achievement. Have a great Sunday, Dolfans.

  41. The Flying Pig says:

  42. Silly Tim says:

Mike E, Tanny seems like the kind of guy who will roll with the players who are on the team. I don’t see him being a guy who wants to have much say on offensive personnel. That said, I don’t really know for sure.

  43. manitobafinfan says:

Afternoon Peeps.. Finally can breathe a little as V-Day rush over.. ahhhhh … thanx for all the scouting reports and draft chatter.. i enjoy reading as i do not know much about the College players.. Go Phins !!

    • stangerx says:

You and I will learn together as greater minds teach us…….did I just say that about this crew?…..lol. But they sure as anything know their football.

  44. steveccnv says:

I’m really down on what I think the Fins need to do to be a real contender. This after thinking we were right there at midseason. Our FO isn’t smart enough to help us get there with the talent we have. Sure NE cheats and they get every call imaginable, but they’re also smart, and they don’t self destruct at the end of games (maybe they did against KC, but look how they responded).

We have to keep Wallace or it’s going to cost us 2 yrs to get back where we were, unless of course we get lucky and find someone that can stretch the field and also is a RZ threat.

Omar said RT needed an 85 QB rate to get us to the playoffs, but his 92.8 wasn’t good enough. That goes back to what I think about stats… Your QB has to be able to get it done when the game is on the line, and that isn’t just referring to scoring when you’re down 8 or less, it’s also getting that key first down to keep the other O off the field. In today’s NFL your O has to win games at the end when you’re leading more than your D, the rules make it too easy to drive for the winning TD given 4 downs.

Contrary to what I’ve said the past couple of years we need to be able to stop the run when it matters (yards per game allowed not as important), and run the ball when it matters (short yardage, including goal line, and in the 4th with a lead).

To be a real contender we need to do be great on O and very good on D.

    • stangerx says:

Agreed Steve. I’m hoping like anything Wallace stays. It is clear financial and business sense. But it is up to him and the org to work something up. Did concern me that he had a meeting with Hickey. Makes me think he couldn’t work it out with Joe.

      • manitobafinfan says:

Really do… well rounded group with a lot of Use FUL insight.. Thats what keeps me lurking in the shadows, even when busy..

  45. Mike E. says:

    Hey Steve, Manitoba!

  46. Mike E. says:

Steve – I’m not so sure Wallace is gone yet, and I agree with you it would be a poor move to let him go.

  47. stangerx says:

Almost scary, but shiot they are going after ISIS. Gotta like that.

  48. Mike E. says:

    Tim

Maybe Tannehill should care more about who’s on the team. If he’s going to be a team leader, that’s part of it. he can’t just show up to work everyday, he has to be on the pulse of his team and lead them. If he’s not, like Steve said, he better.

    • Silly Tim says:

It’s not his job to make personnel decisions though. My point is that he’s not a complainer. Now he has to decide who stays and who goes, like a Diva QB? That’s what the GM and HC is for, to decide who is on the 53 man roster.

I think we go too far with what players are suppose to be like and how they’re suppose to act, prepare etc., as if there is one script that they should all follow to appease the masses.

      • manitobafinfan says:

I can see coach or GM getting his take on working with players PRIOR to a meeting with “said player” but not his place to be sitting in on the meetings..

  51. manitobafinfan says:

and 100% agree turfing or getting rid of Wallace would be a silly decision at this point..

  52. Mike E. says:

    Tim

Wow, That’s not what I said. Wouldn’t it be nice if he would go into the meeting either taking Wallace’s side, or if he was on the other side, telling Mike I need to be confident that you’re with me Mike, and that we share the same fire and enthusiasm to win? Tell him what you did in that last game sucked, and I need to know that was a one time thing and that you’re with us 100% going forward. THAT’s what I would expect from a true team leader. If he’s not there yet, then he’s not there, but it would be great if he was. He should be a leader of this team, and certainly of the offense, IMO.

    • Silly Tim says:

But you just said what I said you said again. LOL

I’m sure he talks to his teammates, but you are laying out the blueprint for how it should be done, no?

      • Mike E. says:

Not really laying out the blueprint, just giving a hypothetical of how it could go down. I think it would be a good thing if Tanny was involved in this, especially if Tannehill is our QB for the next 5-10 years.

  53. Silly Tim says:

Toba, agreed an opinion on offensive personnel issues is one thing, being a strong voice on what happens is another. Tanny is still a player and teammate and he has his job to do.

    • manitobafinfan says:

i think we are on the same page here.. i would hope that RT HAS had a chat with Wallace about the “Quitting” or whatever the hell happened in the Jets game, and that they have each other’s backs.. We need these two communicating as opposed to blaming each other (not that that is happening)

Stanger : Proof reading at bar is not scanning the label for Alcohol Content 🙂

  55. Silly Tim says:

I’m not sure we have to know what communications Tanny and Wallace have had. I’m sure they talked at some point. Dbolt has said Tanny said to Wallace to shut up or something to that degree during the game. I didn’t see it. LOL

I also don’t think Tanny has the tenure and success to make calls like Peyton, Brady, Brees, Rodgers etc. can do. He’s still a young QB ascending, but I will say I think year 4 is when he has to step up more and be a difference maker. He showed some signs of that last season. I don’t think he’s reached his ceiling yet.

    • manitobafinfan says:

We saw , or i should say I saw some more Fire in RT this year on the sidelines, and it is a good thing to keep growing on yes, and as you stated, he does have to grow into that role.. Players need to Earn both respect and “the right” to get all up in players faces.. Can’t expect someone to be doing that until they are comfortable/confident in their own position.. week 4-5 there was questions as to whether RT was to be the QB going forward.. he took that and rolled with it.. now next year , being (hopefully) confident in his position/role, and also (hopefully) having earned their respect he can take the step to be more in yer face type leader..

  56. Silly Tim says:

Stanger, ISIS is being pounded militarily and technologically. They don’t stand a chance. The problem is that they’ll just keep trying and don’t care about the carnage.

    • stangerx says:

They have no chance in terms of creating their own nation (thank heaven), but doesn’t mean they won’t down the road go into underground terrorist mode. Hard to imagine something is worse than Al Queda, but there it is.

      • Silly Tim says:

Right, my last sentence was basically referring to them as terrorists and not a specific name. In the big picture, it’s the same enemy. What they call themselves is irrelevant.

  57. rgs322 says:

    One of my best yet…

  58. Silly Tim says:

Toba, not even in your face, just a simple comment in a certain way should be enough to let a player know, line up right or get off the field. Not all people are screamers and hot-headed.

  59. Mike E. says:

rgs – Only player I don’t love is Kouandijo. There must have been a better OG or OT tackle available, like Ogbuehi, or maybe Cam Erving

We gave up a 2nd going from #12 to #3 in 2013. Now I know some say we robbed the Raiders even though Jordan remains an enigma, but I can’t see getting a 2nd to go from #14 to #17. I think that’s a 4th at best.

  61. Mike E. says:

rgs posted his draft, and was so happy with the results he spiked his phone and it broke. He’s now asking his wife if he can borrow hers. lol

  62. manitobafinfan says:

1st attempt EVER based on name recognition and needs.. Your score is: 3856 (GRADE: B)

Round 6 Pick 15: Adam Shead, OG, Oklahoma (B-)
Round 7 Pick 15: Marcus Rush, DE, Michigan State (F)
Everyone needs a DE named Rush !!!!

  63. manitobafinfan says:

And Holy Shit, are there a lot trade down scenarios that will NEVER happen..
i could have walked out with at least 5 more picks..

  64. Mike E. says:

1st trade up draft, along with Varga to piss Tim off. lol

Your score is: 5062 (GRADE: A-)

    Your Picks:
Round 1 Pick 9 (NYG): Dante Fowler Jr., OLB/DE, Florida (A)
Round 3 Pick 14: Gerod Holliman, FS, Louisville (A)
Round 4 Pick 15: Breshad Perriman, WR, UCF (A-)

  65. Rhino says:

Hey everyone. Never checked back in after signing in through Facebook yesterday. (or was it the day before?) LOL My academic team is heading to state ranked #2 only a handful of questions behind first (so far #11 in nation, Los Angeles U.S.D. schools take top 6 spots!) 12 hour study days. I’ll be reading in the a.m. to find out predictions of who we draft as the next “whipping boy”. 🙂 I save ALL my down time for Warriors games.

  66. Rhino says:

btw, love the Facebook and Twitter connections. Also the notifications “via email” … I’ll work on embedded pics later… photo bucket was a pain in the ass. lol

  67. Mike E. says:

Hey Rhino! Good luck! Go get ’em!

  68. Silly Tim says:

Something I have been thinking about as far as most of the coaching staff remaining sans Rodgers, is they all know the current personnel really well and specifically Lazor knows his QB and offense better. He can kind of do a bread & butter/scrap these type revisions. He knows what worked and what didn’t and why. He will also have analytic data to use as an additional tool.

I see the offense being built more around Tannehill’s strengths and not forcing the issue. If he’s not a good long ball QB than roll with what he and the offense do well. He’ll hit on some. He was ranked 4th in 20+ yard pass plays. Build on that and being more balanced.

  69. Silly Tim says:

    Good to see you, Rhino.

  70. The Flying Pig says:

There is a Rhino running around in this place

    Everyone Run!!!!

  71. Rhino says:

for what it’s worth, as I missed all the drama… when Seahawks became the Black Sox to keep the Cheaters fake-lore going, I turned off the tv immediately to not watch the bullshit…. and only went to espn online or on t.v. yesterday for the first time. As soon as they show any part of a pats uniform, I am turning the channel the rest of the year. Made me sick. [[xatflip]] (hope no kids are reading)

  72. Mike E. says:

Piggy -The trade back options are totally unrealistic, as are the trade up values. That’s why I prefer to do those drafts straight up, no trades.

  73. Rhino says:

back to work. Good to see you all too. We are headed for a deja vu offseason: mid round pick, .500 season, picking a position that we missed on in previous years… time for a Pats strategy, like brass knuckles under all the tape. 😉

  74. olddolphan says:

DR RHINO; –GREAT to see U on the board!! – – One article I’d most like to see on this site is your reasons WHY DON SHULA is the GREATEST COACH OF ALL TIME!! – – Iwas a particularly well researched effort that, in my view, totally destroys the “one trick ponies” who won Super Bowls because, and ONLY because, they had one of the top QB’s of all time (such as Bill Walsh with Montana and Belicheat with Brady). (THAT SHOULD BE “It was.”) I believe Shula getting a team quarterbacked by David Woodley to a Super Bowl was one of the Greatest achievements in NFL history!! – – HOPE to read that article AGAIN!!

    • manitobafinfan says:

Mr OD.. Hope all is well with you sir.. Imagine if we could have had Marino instead of Woodley that year ??

      • olddolphan says:

WE would have KILLED the Redskins with Danny! –INSTEAD, Woodley completed ONLY 4 PASSES THE ENTIRE GAME – – A game we actually led early in the 4th quarter!!! – – By the time Marino got Miami to a Super Bowl, our defense was already heading downhill.

  75. manitobafinfan says:

so traded almost out of first round amassing picks… Your score is: 4290 (GRADE: B+)

    Your Picks:
Round 1 Pick 27 (DAL): Arik Armstead, DE, Oregon (B)
    Round 2 Pick 15: Anthony Harris, SS/FS, Virginia (C+)
Round 2 Pick 19 (HOU): Denzel Perryman, ILB/OLB, Miami (Fla.) (A)
Round 2 Pick 22 (DET): Devin Smith, WR, Ohio State (A)
Round 2 Pick 26 (BALT): Clive Walford, TE, Miami (Fla.) (A-)

Quite seriously ran out of recognizable names between round 4&5

  76. The Flying Pig says:

We would love to get Rhino’s submitting as well as anime else

We would like to get those Dolphins origins stories in

    If you guys have any
Or anything like a scouting report to submit
We would love to run it

  77. Silly Tim says:

Let’s roll with this for a moment. Get the OL to another level, that’s paramount. We need to build a solid core and a group with chemistry.

    LT Albert
    LG UFA/Turner
    C Pouncey
    RG UFA/Turner
    RT James
    WR Wallace
    WR Landry
    WR Rookie (big, playmaker)
    TE/H-Back Clay
    QB Tannehill
    RB Miller

We don’t currently have that jump ball, big WR who is hard to cover and tackle in the line-up. I think that player changes the dynamic of the offense. We have ball control options and explosiveness, but a WR like that changes everything.

    • olddolphan says:

TIM: OUR #1 need, IMHO, is a run-stuffing NT who won’t fade in the 4th quarter of the game or the season. –CONDITIONING is still an issue with the Dolphins in my view. –WELL CONDITIONED teams don’t fade as often as the Dolphins have done the last two seasons.

      • Silly Tim says:

That can be addressed in FA and there are a lot of DTs available. The draft is ripe with bigger playmaking WRs. You have to go with the market. I’d rather sign a solid anchor-type DT/NT in FA, not the top dog but a proven pro, and take advantage of the WR talent in the draft early. Once they prove themselves, they are real expensive to keep.

      • professor lou says:

We need to be able to control the o-line and the d-line and we couldn’t do either last season so we need help on both sides whether we find it in FA or the draft. We have some good depth on the d-line but not so much on the o-line so regardless of whether we bring in another FA to start there we should still pick up at least one more offensive lineman in the draft.
As for the d-line, I can picture both Fede and A Johnson working their way into the rotation and K Johnson may provide some good backup along with Coleman. I think Starks is the weak link at this point. Odrick plays a lot of snaps so I can’t fault him if he fades; that’s on the coaches.

      • professor lou says:

        Tim:
I’d like two please. WR’s that is.

  78. Silly Tim says:

OD, how do you feel about Shula liking Joe Philbin? Just a senile old man or a good endorsement?

    • olddolphan says:

The DON is a team guy. He’s NOT going to rip Philbin publicly. NOR did he rip Sparano publicly until Tony was fired. –But I harken back to one of Shula’s best quotes: “The best gauge of a head coach is his won-lost record.” —Philbin’s head coaching record is BELOW .500.

      • Silly Tim says:

Philbin took over a 7-9, 7-9, 6-10 team and went 7-9, 8-8 and 8-8 with a rookie QB from the start. No props for that?

Shula was 30-33 from 86-89 with Marino.

      • olddolphan says:

NO, TIM, no props for that. When Philbin wins over 300 games and takes us to 5 Super Bowls then we can discuss him being Shula’s equal. Until then, he’s still just another coach with a sub-.500 career record.

  79. manitobafinfan says:

So in these two drafts i did.. i somehow ended up picking Anthony Chickillo, DE, Miami (Fla. at Round 4 Pick 15 twice.. One grade is a B next is a C-… strange..

    • olddolphan says:

MANITOBA: I’D have liked your picks better if you had included DB J’ONE SMITH of Florida Atlantic in, say, the 4th round. –Smith will be a better pro than Chickillo.

      • manitobafinfan says:

i will try to remember the name.. as stated above not too familiar with too many college guys..

  80. manitobafinfan says:

OD: i did not realize this..Woodley completed ONLY 4 PASSES THE ENTIRE GAME .. all i can remember is Riggins sluffing off the DB and rumbling to TD , and McNeal ? fumbling a punt or KR.. Still hate Redskins to this day..

    • olddolphan says:

I had a perfect view of Riggins breaking Don McNeal’s tackle for the winning score on 4th down in the 4th quarter. It was my very first time attending a Super Bowl. –Some time in 2015 or 2016 I’ll write the story “My First Super Bowl.” –It will be in two parts. Part One will cover the events leading up to, and including, the AFC Championship Game between the hated New York Jets and the Miami Dolphins in the historic Orange Bowl (the ONLY TIME the Jets & Fins have EVER MET in the post season). Part Two will be Super Bowl XVII. — As Young Stanger & others can verify, I STILL WEAR MY SB XVII hat to all Dolphins’ games, home and away. –THAT HAT is 33 years old and has withstood dozens of washings in the laundry!

  81. manitobafinfan says:

Alrighty my back starting to hurt from this chair.. have a good one people.. i out..

  82. stangerx says:

    tight end Charles Clay,
    offensive lineman Daryn Colledge,
    safety Louis Delmas,
    offensive lineman Jason Fox,
    quarterback Matt Moore,
    running back Knowshon Moreno,
    defensive tackle Jared Odrick,
    center Samson Satele,
    linebacker Kelvin Sheppard,
    running back Daniel Thomas,
    linebacker Jason Trusnik,
    cornerback James Wilson,
    ——————-
    Those are our UFAs.
Only ones I really care about are Odrick and Clay.
Helps put the salary cap position a bit better.

  83. Silly Tim says:

OD, so it’s okay that Shula struggles at a particular time in his career with the best pure passer on the planet, but Philbin has to have the same success early in a different time?

My point is you can only go so far with the talent you have.

  84. olddolphan says:

JUST got back in the house after mowing the lawn, which we do about once a month during “winter season” in the Tampa Bay area. –Sure beats shoveling SNOW!!
    ————-
Saw that the legendary coach of North Carolina, Dean Smith, just passed away. He’s a real loss in my book. Was the first southern coach I can recall giving a full scholarship to an African-American (Charlie Scott way back in the ’60’s.) Lots of people TALKED about civil rights. Dean Smith talked less than some of the blowhards but achieved far, far, more with his actions. Among them was leading the fight to integrate an entire section of Chapel Hill. This earned him the undying hatred of vast numbers of Carolina rednecks who resisted to the very end the right of minorities to vote and attend public schools. Coach Smith has been referred to as “A great man on the court and a better man off of it.” Bravo to you, Dean Smith.

    • stangerx says:

Dean Smith was a good’un. Man stood up. Reminds me of Shula as a coach, an hoping the Don would have made the same stand if faced with the other issue.

  85. professor lou says:

    two things:
    1. Who didn’t have trouble tackling John Riggins?
    2. Who didn’t break Don McNeal’s tackle?

    • stangerx says:

Still was one of the most painful things ever lou. And not like RIggin’s had breakaway speed to the outside.

      • professor lou says:

No, he didn’t have breakaway speed but your only defender on the outside is Don McNeal you get what you deserve. I’m sorry, but I do have to agree with Tim that, yes, Shula got us to the SB’s in the 70’s but he also blew it out his ass in the 80’s when he had THE best qb in the league and didn’t build a run game or some semblance of a defense around him. THAT was inexcusable.

    • professor lou says:

It still pisses me off to this day because Marino is a much better passer than Brady and WE should have been winning the division and AFC Championship quite a few more times with Marino around and we didn’t. Now we sit home and watch the Pats win another one. Sorry, but I blame Shula for this. His wins were because he had Marino.
How many games did we play against the Jets where Marino put up 42 pts and the defense gave up 45? Pitiful.

  86. Mike E. says:

    Tim

I think OD’s point is that him endorsing Philbin is in no way Shula saying that he likes Philbin or thinks that he’s a good coach, he’s just being a company man. Philbin is an average coach at best, he’s shown no signs of greatness, only queasiness. Just because a handful of coaches struggled early and became great does not equate to Philbin doing the same. More than likely he’ll be a position coach again very soon. There, a little smack of reality for ya! lol

    • stangerx says:

      Philbin
      Sparano
      Saban
      Cameron
      Wanny
      Johnson
Add in unrefrigerated Tuna if you want

Rank them if you have the time. Would be interested. I know the bar is set real low, but Scooby Doo villain is at the top of that list for me.

  87. Randy says:

    MikeE,
This isn’t about Tanny, for me. I simply think it sets a bad precedent to give one employee input on another employee’s employment and performance. As I said, they can always have a conversation with Tanny behind the scenes or behind closed doors, but it’s not his place to be in an actual meeting. Does that mean he is “special” and gets input on every player and their future with the team? Do the other players get the same opportunity to voice their opinion about Tanny or any other player? How do you think veteran players would view that? Do you honestly think all these guys always get along with they’re teammates…and do they have to be to play together? I doubt it.

You and others may think he’s a franchise QB(crazy, but we’ll go with it. Lol) but that doesn’t give him any right to be making personnel decisions. He’s earned nothing. Wallace has more seniority than Tanny does in the league….and I do think that matters to most of these players. If I’m tanny, no way in hell do I start talking shit about my veteran teammates to the “boss”. How do you think the other players would view that?

If they decide to keep Wallace, then it’s up to he and Tanny to make it work.

All that said….I’m not invested in Wallace staying or going…just like every other player on this team.

    • stangerx says:

Randy — I’m at least invested in that I’d like to have Wallace for free versus the cap hit rather than paying huge bucks for an empty spot on the bench.

  88. Randy says:

    stanger,
I haven’t paid attention to the numbers of it all, but I just don’t get how it makes sense to get rid of him. But, if the men in charge truly feel he’s negatively affecting the team’s development…then Ya do what you gotta do. I think the bigger question should be…what can we do to keep this guy happy on the field and get production out of him? Use him because he is a gifted player.

I just think this sorta crap goes on behind the scenes a lot more than fans know. In a room full of over 50 people…good luck getting them all to like one another. Lol. They just gotta be able to PLAY together.

    • stangerx says:

For sure about on the field. And I do follow the numbers……pretty much we cut him and we pay the same capwise as if he was there. No brainer. Philbin knows that too. 2016 is a different story.

  89. Silly Tim says:

I just go by what people say, not what they might have meant. My point was ignored so no biggy.

  90. professor lou says:

anyone wanna guess who lead the league in yards after catch as a team?

  91. professor lou says:

    Here we go again:
    Total 1st downs: Mia: 361, NE: 361
    Toatl yds: Mia: 5601, NE: 5848 (247)
Yds Rush: Mia: 1872, NE: 1727
    Yds Pass: Mia: 3729, NE: 4121 (392)
Sacks (def): Mia: 39, NE: 40
    Ints. Mia: 14, NE: 16

Once again, it all comes down to how many points you score and how many you give up. Overall, the difference elsewhere.

    • The Flying Pig says:

Which is a great argument to draft Kevin white or Devante Parker with the 14th pick

      • professor lou says:

Pats won the SB. Their greatest weapon on offense, other than Brady, is the guy from Rocky IV. It definitely behooves us to go after a BIG weapon who can score like a mofo.

  92. The Flying Pig says:

I sort of assumed all those illegal picks oops I mean “rubs” helped the Cheats get YAC

    • professor lou says:

great assumption. I would have thought the same and was surprised myself. Colts, Steelers, Lions and Bears round out the top 5.

  93. professor lou says:

Pats scored 62% of the time they were in the redzone. We scored 51% of the time.

  94. professor lou says:

Suprisingly, Arizona only scored a touchdown 42% of the time they were in the redzone.

  95. Mike E. says:

Randy – If Tannehill’s our QB for the next 5-10 years, wouldn’t that make him our franchise QB? In any case, it’s not about him making personnel decisions, but I’d think you’d want your QB to be able to trust the guy who he has to throw to that’s making a fat chunk of the $60M contract he signed a couple of years ago. It’s not so much giving Tannehill power he should or shouldn’t have, but making sure those 2 can work together in harmony and as a team. If not, one of them should go, and I think we both know which one.

  96. Mike E. says:

    Tim

What exactly is your point with Philbin?

    • Silly Tim says:

He’s not the only coach to go through a mediocre stretch. It just happens to be at the start of his career as a HC. The past isn’t his fault. I get the feeling sometimes the guy is treated like he’s been going backwards and losing more and more every year.

He can’t keep losing down the stretch and missing the playoffs and I think we all agree about that. 2015 is a big year for the entire direction of the team.

  97. rgs322 says:

We gave up a 2nd going from #12 to #3 in 2013. Now I know some say we robbed the Raiders even though Jordan remains an enigma, but I can’t see getting a 2nd to go from #14 to #17. I think that’s a 4th at best.
    ___________________________________________
I agree that a 2nd for going down 3 spots is doubtful, but that’s what was offered in the game. …I’ll just pretend we traded a player to go along with the first round swopping of picks. 😉

BTW, in one of Jimmy Johnson’s drafts with the phins, he dropped from #15 to #19 and picked up a 3rd round pick, so getting a 3rd in possible dropping 3 spots. Also, correct me if I’m wrong but didn’t we once give up a 4th round pick for moving up one spot in the first. ….Vernon Carey maybe???

    • professor lou says:

gotta score more and keep others from scoring. that’s the only differences. sounds simple enough but everything else between us and the teams in the SB was pretty equal except scoring and points given up. Gotta do one, the other or both.

    • The Flying Pig says:

We are a smart pick bc we aren’t going through a coaching change and have settled into the qb position

I thought Odrick was an odd choice to include as a playmaker

A couple teams always queerest into the playoff picture

A lot has to go right for us

      • professor lou says:

Yeah, Odrick was kind of an odd choice. Steady, but wouldn’t call him a playmaker. Don’t know we really have one on defense other than maybe Grimes.

      • steveccnv says:

Yeah, not sure where Odrick came from, I wouldn’t have blinked, if they said Jones, Starks, Pouncey, Miller, or Alberts or even Jenkins. Odrick would be better served at end in a 3-4.

  98. Mike E. says:

    Tim

That argument is like the one you can make for any guy who has failed to be anything other than mediocre. There are a shitload more coaches that have failed and end up being position coaches again than there are guys who didn’t win and become winners. The odds are against Philbin succeeding, we’re just going to have to hope for the best.

    • professor lou says:

You never know what’s going to happen. Look at how Seattle got lucky with Sherman and Chancellor in the 5th. Or did they?
It all has to come together for any coach. Doesn’t matter who it is. Right place at the right time; the talent, ball bouncing the right way, etc. Or, you can just buy a ring like the Pats.
Gruden isn’t a great coach by any means but he won in Tampa. Neither is Coughlin. I still don’t think Hairball is that great either and we’ll see what he does in Michigan.
Point is, coaches have other coaches and you’ve got personalities to deal with like we are right now with Wallace and you’ve got to try to make everyone happy and if one guy isn’t maybe he doesn’t play hard all of the time and there’s just so much that goes into it. Then, you’ve got to have a GM who knows his ass from his elbow and gets you players that fit in your system. Jeffy was a good one for trying to fit a square peg in a round hole.
so, the odds are against Philbin succeeding but I think Hickey is the wildcard.

  99. Mike E. says:

    Lou

I noticed that guy who thinks we’re a potential sleeper never mentioned Joe Philbin once as an asset. He mentioned the Head Coach of every other team in that article, but no mention of Joe. Coincidence? Surely not!

    • steveccnv says:

      Good point.

I don’t think Joe has the fire in him necessary to win it all, but then Dungy and Pitt’s coach didn’t either. Say what you want about Rexy, but he has fire.
