GAME 3: OCTOBER 1, 1972 – MIAMI at MINNESOTA
The NFL schedule makers provided few favors for the Miami Dolphins during the early portion of The Perfect Season. Week #1 featured a date with the very powerful winners of Super Bowl IV, the Kansas City Chiefs, at brand new Arrowhead Stadium. After a week #2 game at the Orange Bowl against Houston. The schedule makers sent Miami back on the road to play one of the strongest teams in the NFC, the Minnesota Vikings. The Vikings were a franchise on the cusp of greatness. In January 1970 they advanced to Super Bowl IV as double-digit favorites to defeat the Chiefs. But, for the second straight season, the AFL representative conquered the NFL’s best. Vikings Hall of Fame head coach Bud Grant said,”Now I know how Don Shula felt when he lost the Super Bowl to the Jets.” Like Shula, Grant vowed to get back to the Super Bowl.
Indeed, Bud Grant would return. But, unlike Shula, Grant would never win pro football’s ultimate game. Four times during the decade of the ’70’s Grant would get his Vikings to the Super Bowl. Four times he would suffer the agony of defeat. However, from the late ’60’s through the late ’70’s, the Vikings were among the very best franchises in the NFL. The 1972 Minnesota Vikings were loaded with Hall of Fame talent. The defense, known as the “Purple People Eaters” (after the Vikings bright purple jerseys) had Carl Eller, Jim Marshall and 
Alan Page, who would go on to be a Minnesota state supreme court justice after a stellar NFL career. The offensive line was anchored by huge rookie tackle Ron Yary (a future HOF inductee) and by Mick Tinglehoff, one of the leagues’s best centers for over a decade and a likely future Hall of Famer. Brute strong fullback Bill Brown was Minnesota’s featured running back. Receivers Gene Washington and speedy John Gilliam were legitimate deep threats. But the man who made Minnesota go, their prodigal son, Fran Tarkenton, had just returned to Minnesota after five solid years with the Giants. It was 
Tarkenton who had taken this franchise to prominence when he quarterbacked this team from 1961 to 1966. In 1972 he left the Giants toreturn home — to the absolute delight of hard core Viking fans. By the time he retired, Tarkenton would own many all-time NFL passing records, including most career yards passing (47,003) and most career touchdown passes (342). His records would stand for over 20 years until broken by Dan Marino. Simply put, these Vikings were a dominant football team, especially at home. The prior week, Minnesota crushed the Detroit Lions 34-10. Thus, it was little wonder the Vikings were a touchdown favorite over the visiting Dolphins.
The game started poorly for the undefeated Miami team. Just over four minutes into the game an amazed Tarkenton saw an unguarded John Gilliam wide open down the field. “Tarks” 56-yard bomb was right on target and the Vikings had an early 7-0 lead. This could have started the Dolphins downfall. But, it didn’t. Miami receiver Marlin Briscoe, traded to the Dolphins from Buffalo for a first round draft choice, said,”if this was Buffalo, the first thing we’d do is PANIC!! Then, we’d throw the bomb. Our quarterback would get sacked and the game would be over. But things are different here in Miami. We knew, deep in our hearts, we’d win!” Bob Griese’s calm deliberate approach failed to produce results. But Miami’s “No Name Defense” stood firm and the second quarter concluded with the score still stuck on 7-0.
The Dolphin’s offense began to show signs of life in the third quarter. Mixing passing and running plays, Griese twice got the Dolphins into Viking’s territory. The first drive produced a 38-yard Yepremian field goal. The next drive ended when the left-footed Cypriot connected on a 42-yard effort. Late in the third quarter Minnesota produced their first meaningful drive since scoring on a long bomb early in the game. But before the drive ended, the gun sounded ending the third quarter. Minnesota led 7-6 with one quarter to go. The Vikings concluded their drive with a 1 yard touchdown run by Bill Brown. Trailing 14-6 it appeared the Dolphins were going to lose their first game. Midway in the last quarter Miami took over on their own 20. An 18 yard pass, Griese to Morris, was followed by a double-reverse that culminated in Marlin 
Briscoe’s 22 yard pass to tight end Jim Mandich. A few plays later Garo Yepremian lined-up a 51 yard field goal attempt. If good, it would be the longest of his career! The ball just cleared the crossbar and the Dolphins now trailed by only 14-9. But it was late, very late.
Now, the “No Name Defense” had to stop the Vikings ONE MORE TIME! Two runs by Oscar Reed went nowhere! On third and long, Tarkenton’s pass was tipped away by Tim Foley! The Dolphins would have ONE FINAL CHANCE! The drive started on Miami’s 41. Morris’ run got only two yards. But on the next play the Vikes’ Bob Lurtsema hammered Griese with a late hit. The 15 yard penalty moved the ball to Minnesota’s 42. Expecting a pass, the Vikings dropped back into coverage. So Griese switched the call to an end sweep, resulting in a 14 yard scamper by Mercury Morris to the 28. In clutch situations, Griese liked to go to Howard Twilley, ashort, average speed receiver who NEVER seemed to drop a pass. Reliable Howard was true to form, catching two passes for 25 yards. The Dolphins were now 3 yards from victory. Everyone in Metropolitan Stadium was standing and screaming! Tight end Jim Mandich said “I thought we’d just pound the ball to Csonka with less than two minutes to go”…so did the Vikings. Instead, Griese faked a hand-off and threw a short pass to a totally wide open Jim Mandich for the winning touchdown! Fins Win 16-14! The Perfect Season was still alive!
Miami’s late drive for a touchdown grabbed the headlines. But, in truth, the “No Name Defense” was responsible for this upset victory. The “No Names” sacked the elusive Tarkenton five times. They intercepted Tarkenton three times, including a pick on Tarkenton’s desperate heave on the game’s last play. After giving up a 56 yard bomb on Tarkenton’s first pass, the “No Names” held Tarkenton to just 50 YARDS PASSING THE REST OF THE GAME!!! It was an awesome performance. In the post game locker room, Bud Grant told reporters, “There were no excuses, no breaks. They just beat us. At the end, they were stronger than we were.” In Miami’s locker, Shula said, “We take great pride in our conditioning. Today I believe it made a difference.”

D, Mannion has really good size and throws the ball well. He’d be a guy worth developing. I’d be nervous with him as our 2 but if he can learn a system quickly he may be a nice player.
Yeah i guess what im saying is i think he is more “gunslinger” starter material than a backup who you expect to make solid decisions, and you aren’t overly concerned with them being big play or superstar caliber. If i were thinking of potentially replacing Tanny, even in 3 years or so, which is how i did previously, i would still be more gung-ho for him. Now i just want a dude that will come in and not embarrass us in a pinch lol. Carden is more that kind of guy so now i kinda prefer him. Bridge also has kinda fallen off my list,due to same deal. Bridge probably has best arm in the draft but id be scared to roll with him as our 2, and i think the team is sold on tanny for a long time.
No doubt Tannehill is here for a while the question is do we develop someone who may become a commodity or do we keep an old grizzled vet in place to feel perhaps more secure. I wouldn’t have a rookie as my 2 but after a year or two he might be.

Minnesota TE Maxx Williams measured 6-foot-5, 249 at the NFL Combine.
Perhaps most impressively, Williams has huge 10 3/8-inch hands, bigger than many NFL left tackles. His arm length of 33 1/2″ will create for a wide catching radius.

Want a real strip club experience….Houston. In some places in Texas, Houston being one of them, the “dancers” are independent contractors with the club. They dont actually work for the club, they pay a fee to dance there and its all profits after that. When i say they set their own rule…i mean they choose how close to none they are willing to go. No hands on the dancer, not in Houston, they make you touch them. Want to get really really disgustingly pornographic in public…again…their rules and they like money more than pride.

Perryman ranks as Kiper’s No. 1 middle linebacker. “The more I’ve watched the tape of Perryman from the 2014 season, the more I like him,” Kiper wrote. “He just does so many things well in terms of attacking the line of scrimmage and taking on blocks. Coverage is a question, but I think he lands in Round 1 if the draft is tomorrow. There are a couple ILB needy teams this year, and possibly some that will be once they trim their roster for cap space. Luckily fr us, the ones in front of us have more pressing needs. Its the ones right after us that make me wonder if we skip ILB with our first pick, if we will have much left to choose from by second one.
There seems to be a few good ones, none really a day 1 starter unless what you already have is that horrible…which might be us.

TE and WR doesn’t improve play in the trenches which is much more of an issue for us. I would not be happy with those two picks.
What do they say you have to have? A QB and good line play on both sides of the ball. We collapsed down the stretch this past season because of line play on both sides of the ball.

GD, you made trench play a secondary option as if 3rd rd picks and on will solidify those areas. I would re-sign Clay and not target a TE at all. I don’t mind one WR early who can add a new dimension but I don’t want a guy with red flags early in the draft. DGB not only has off the field issues but he’s also extremely raw in fundamentals.
I mentioned FA also for OL, and of course DT, plus I was responding to Dbolt about liking Maxx Williams, who talked about getting him in the 1st knowing he wont last, so then I thought, well, most of the big WR’s could be gone by our pick in the 2nd round, except for possibly DGB due to what you think are his red flags.
No big deal bro, we’ll never see a draft go like us fans want anyways….well, maybe for you, OL in 1st, DT 2nd, OL 3rd, DT/DE 4th, Varga 5th 😉

GD, it’s not a big deal at all, just sharing opinions. I don’t think TE and WR 1 and 2 is the way to go. Like I said, I have no problem with a big playmaking WR, but I’m not feeling it at TE.
I was responding to your one specific post, not your overall discussion so that’s my bad. I agree on FA for an anchor DT (someone nice and not too expensive, lol) and similar for a starting guard. We have some young guys we’re already developing on the OL. If we go draft for a starting caliber OL it’s likely going to have to be early and the same at DT.
Also people talk about how Clay isn’t really and in-line TE and that’s true, but most of the top receiving TEs in the league do their damage lining up in multiple ways, not in-line.
I look at it like this, Williams is a better pure TE, but big picture if we brought Clay back our 2TE sets that would also use Clay out of the -Back spot become really deadly.
Agreed but Williams hasn’t done a thing in the NFL yet. Clay has been productive per touch since he’s been here.
Look at Eric Ebron (#10) as a rookie – 25-248 9.9 1 TD. Clay’s rookie year (6th rd) – 16-233 14.6 3 TD.
They look good on paper but none of these guys know how to play TE coming into the league. We have a guy who’s a proven playmaker and has developed for 4 years but we want to start again? Not me, if we don’t re-sign Clay I will be very annoyed.

I looked at the top 20 paid TEs in the league and averaged them out and it’s about $5.5M per year. So keep that in mind with Clay.
I like Clay, and would resign him & if the GM still drafted a TE early after that incase Clay gets hurt again or he see’s no further development in Sins, then I wouldn’t be mad. Draftees come cheap on their rookie contracts.
But Ideally we need to address the pending issues @ WR….so get me a White, Perriman, Parker of DGB & maybe another one later depending on what happens with the WR’s already on our roster.
I tell ya, this is the year to have those 5 picks in the first 3 rounds & over $40M in Cap space that Jeffro had in 2013….imagine the field day Hickey could have fixing this team. I’ve bet he’s joked about that in passing with Aponte & his scouting staff….SMH

The problem is we can’t re-sign everyone looking for max dollars but not matching the money to production. Clay was banged up this year, it happens to a lot of players. Even still he was our 3rd best receiver and 2nd in plays of 20+ only behind Wallace. Clay makes plays. You don’t let those guys walk.

OD, liking Ireland and not hating him as a person or thinking he’s clueless are different things. He made mistakes but also found some good players. His record spoke for itself (46-50), it was time to move on.

NO, GDP, I CAN’T. –IN 1970 I was busting my brain in graduate school while working Monday through Friday at Publix. –On Sundays, I worked for a coin dealer. About half way through a Master’s, I, along with most of the MEN in graduate school (over a period of years) got drafted into Dick Nixon’s Army. –It wasn’t until 1972 that I had enough time to fanatically watch the Fins.
LOL @ Dbolt on Clay jersey. My wife bought it for me for last Christmas. She bought me a Ronnie Brown jersey the year before he was released. So yes that’s annoying but that money is long gone. It’s more about Clay the player. He’s a pain in the ass for teams to cover in our 3 WR, 1 TE/H-back, 1 RB base offense.
For me me, give me Wallace, Landry and a rookie like White, Clay and Miller with an improved OL, and we’ll score all day.

LOL OD – I dread going into work tomorrow, and dealing with this program. the idea is to be quicker, and more efficient, but this program slows you down, no matter how efficient you may be at it. The best way for me to sum it’s shortcomings, and this really is exactly what you have to do BTW . . . . Say you sold cars for a living, and you wanted to give the guy a discount. You would be forced in this program to discount each part of the car separately, line by line, for example a $1500 discount would have to be $300 engine, $300 seats, $300 Wheels and Tires, $300 sunroof, and $300 navigation, and you have to enter each one separately, save, and go to the next one, rather than taking $1500 off the whole car. IT SUCKS!!! I hate it!
GOOD NEWS FROM FAU STADIUM. The FAU Owls lead the Miami Hurricanes 3-0 in this match-up of undefeated college baseball teams in the 6th inning. U-M is ranked 8th in the country by BASEBALL AMERICA. –I’M guessing a win over Miami will put FAU in the Top 25 of next week’s poll.
So let me ask all of you who blame Ireland for this team’s status. Why do you expect this team to be better then it is and lay the blame on the coaches? Ireland was horrible with personnel but Philbin and his staff should win? There is a major contradiction that goes on here and I’m just wondering how you add it all up?
I think they’re both a little less than average to average at what they do. I can’t say for sure that Dion Jordan would be doing better elsewhere, but I truly think he would. I also think a better coach would do more with the talent we have here. I think if Jim Harbaugh came here with this roster, we would have been in the playoffs.
That wasn’t really an answer to the question though. Those are more frustrations coming out.
If Ireland destroyed this team, why should we be good one year removed? That’s the question, nothing more.

Conform??? Oh hell no! I will fight what’s wrong until they fix it. If you let them put you in a bad position, shame on you. I already told them the other day, I was ready to scream. I’m not a conformist, and I think they need to work with the software company to better tailor the program to the way OUR office works. Right now, it’s just way too slow to work properly when it’s busy. When people start walking out because they can’t wait, that’s when they’ll really feel it.

and i didnt say conform, i said suck it up. i am assuming they spent some money on it, so not like it is going any where. if you can get changes made good for you, but not like it is going anywhere.
suck it up = conform, at least the way I see it. It’s accepting the crap they throw at you, and I say, if they throw crap at you, throw it, harder and more accurately!
ffr, I felt we were a 8-8 to 10-6 team all along because I had my concerns. The 10-6 was about if we made the big plays in two more games. We failed.
I think Ireland did leave us with a middle of the road base roster with some strengths, but screwed up WR in 2012 and OL and LB in 2013. That made Hickey have to take on huge contracts at WR and LB in 2014, sign Albert, draft James at #19 and Turner in the 3rd. Then he had an answer for future WR cuts by drafting Landry.
Tannehill and Landry are going to have a lot of linked production together. He’s our new McDuffie.
But there was no doubt a cause and effect situation happened there. I think Hickey was extremely solid in his first year as GM.

Not sure I ever said Ireland was horrible. I know what I’ve said many times was that he was much better at acquiring talent via FA, than he was at drafting. That being said, he did bring in a fair amount of talent here through FA, just not enough in the draft. He did hit on some later RD picks, which is unusual, and made safe, but productive 1st RD picks, (except for Jordan), but his record in the 2nd and 3rd RD was atrocious.
I agree. I wasn’t confronting you on Ireland specifically, it’s just that people jump on that bandwagon pretty easily and I wonder… so if that’s the case, what are we looking at as a team?

hickey hit on 2 draft picks. and a 1 and 2 rounder at that. not so sure that makes him a draft guru

3. OT Turner – injured all year (turf toe) and showed progress late
4. DB Aikens – provided depth all year at both corner and safety

5b. LB Tripp – active STs
6. WR Hazel – cut (back on the roster heading into camp in 2015)
7. DL Fede – worked his way into the DL rotation and plays STs
We need the 2-3 drafts prior to take it to another level too.

ffr, I think we have a disconnect. It’s not one person, we are who we are as a team. We could be 2-12 etc. bumbling about with no chance to win games. That’s not the case. It doesn’t kill me deep inside if we don’t win a championship. I’m well schooled in that dept. with one as an adult with the 1986 Mets. I just want to be in the mix and play exciting football. If we win it all that would be awesome. I like knowing there’s a chance, not demanding it.
I try to keep it fun. When that ends, I’m out.
I took the losses the last the couple of years that knocked us out of the playoffs really hard. I think my biggest problem in all of those games was we just didn’t show up, and weren’t really competitive. The BAL game, we were there in the 1st half, but never came out of the locker room in the 2nd half. The BUF and NYJ games the previous year, the same thing. To me, that’s not on the GM, that’s the coaches, and the players. Not sure who gets more of the blame, the coaches, or the players, probably it should be a 50/50 split.

Mike E, Philbin’s biggest issue are his teams not playing well down the stretch – last 2 games/seasons with the playoffs on the line. Not specific play calls, 2 or 3 man rush, all out blitz, run over pass or whatever. Why can’t he get his players to cease the moment and why can’t these players be self-motivated in that setting?
It’s two-fold for me. Philbin and his staff get one more crack at it. You can’t get more than 4 years of not making the playoffs as a first time HC. That’s a solid time frame to give a guy to build his program. It either happens or it doesn’t. But talent usually decides the outcome.
You can’t allow teams to run all over you down the stretch on defense and also give up sacks in big spots. It ruins games.
If our DL and OL held up we’re probably 10-6 or 11-5.
I disagree on the play calls. I think he put his stamp on the Green Bay game. Played it conservative, as is his MO, and it bit him in the ass when the QB he supposedly developed took the ball down the field for the win. I would have liked our odds much better if we concentrated our effort into getting one more lousy first down, which would have sealed the win, rather than giving the keys to Aaron Rodgers with a gassed defense.
But you’re acting as if the opposite would have been the answer. Do you really know that? What makes me think that would have made a difference? If we lose that way, the same criticism occurs. It still didn’t work. We’re not that good of a team. Yes, we are middle of the road. Get better!
GOOOOOD NEWS from FAU Stadium. FAU’s baseball team has handed 8th ranked Miami their first defeat of the year by a score of 5-3. A fellow alum told me “We have defeated the evil empire!” -But, actually, I have great respect for Miami’s baseball program. Year in and year out they produce a Top-20 program. They have won, I believe, 3 College World Series Championships. FAU plays 2 more games against U-M later this season in Coral Gables in what figures to be a match-up of Top 20 teams. BUT FIRST, FAU has to take on the Ohio State Buckeyes in a 3-game series this weekend. I already have one bet with a Buckeye alum on this series (my usual $1 bet per game). Hope those Buckeye fans brought their sunscreen with them!
