New Age – My Fan Origin

New Age- My Fan Origin

My fan origin starts with my father and his part of the story influences all of the rest. My father was raised in a time when the NFL wasn’t nearly as popular and baseball was still king. His grandfather loved the Reds and didn’t watch that other stuff. He preferred football and has always considered Shula the greatest coach ever (he is). He would watch football whenever given the chance but only one game a week because there were more important things to do than just watch TV.

Shula---New-Age
He transferred his allegiance when Shula went to Miami. Those early years were amazing and I wish I had seen some of those games (thanks for letting me relive them OD!) After high school, my dad experienced a bit of wanderlust and decided to explore Florida for a few weeks with his younger brother. They saved up a few weeks of pay and were off. It was an awesome experience for both guys but after 3 weeks…they ran out of money and headed back home to West Virginia. Several years later, he met my mom and they moved to Ormond Beach, Fl. It was a rough but magical time for them but they moved back to care for their parents and grandparents four years later…with two boys in tow. It was a tough decision but they missed their family. Many summers during my early years included trips back to visit where I was born. It’s sad to see the Florida of the 70s and 80s disappear so completely. It was definitely a different place back then.
I can’t remember my first games as a Dolphins fan but I was always one because my dad raised me as a fan. My earliest Dolphins memories are some of the best though. The early 80s teams were very good and as I got older, Marino was a weekly addiction. We were always ‘in the hunt’ and no one had a better QB during the 80s and 90s.

Marino-New-Age

My dad hasn’t seriously watched the Dolphins in 15 years. They are not the preferred weekly choice in our Virginia market, Marino and Shula retired, and he just doesn’t have as much fun watching this team without his kids. He also really enjoys the atmosphere of college football. As a Hokies fan, his taste in college ball seriously diverges from mine but we will always have the same pro team. I’m hoping that we will soon be able to watch a SB together and be cheering for the same team in it…the Dolphins. Let’s hope Hickey, Ross, and Philbin can get us there sooner than later.

mind you my biggest point was needing way more then just suh. but replacing the whole wr staff or close to it, is no way a good thing. no matter the reason or who is to blame.
    —————————————
Same as replacing an entire OL unit or i should say even more so. We had to do that too, but who on that OL was worth keeping? We were replacing those WR’s regardless of Suh, and it may be a bad idea, but keeping Tanny’s go to guy, and giving him better weapons through draft to me doesn’t seem like a mistake. It seems like replacing inefficient with potential. We will see how it turns out but i think thats a parallel topic with the Suh signing, as they are independent of one another.

so basically if you dont like every move the fins make that makes you negative. hmmmm of well, guess i will be negative then

    • D's avatar D says:

I think prejudging all moves as if they will turn out bad is a bit negative. If you are looking at past moves and judging those, that seems normal. There are lots of moves made by the team i dont like, but they are moves that didnt work out lol. I didnt know Mike Wallace debacle would happen, and though i thought i would have rather had Jennings, and the amount we paid for Wallace was too high, stil it was the decision made by the team and i was hopeful it worked out.

IF philbin couldn’t handle wallace do you think he can handle suh? this is train wreck in the making IMO.

I really want Kevin White, and the fact that I’ve heard we have interest in Cooper or Strong makes me think even more that White is the guy. Suh would like Kevin White.

I’d trade up for the one we want unless the cost is just too high.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I feel the same way. We’re obviously not going about this patiently, we’re in it to win it, so get the guy you really want, as long as you don’t have to move up too far.

i agree they are separate. didnt mean to indicate that signing suh had an effect on the wr’s. i dont pay close enough attention to know if it does. all i really meant is signing someone like suh doesnt do much for me when there are so many other problems and now they are going to have a lot of money tied up the next few years in one guy. and pretty much the history of big time FA’s is they usually are never worth the money

  5. Tim Knight's avatar Silly Tim says:

  7. drg's avatar drg says:

Pretty conflicted with this move. On one hand we get a guy I think is elite and probably the best at his position. He’s young, entering his prime, and should continue to play at an elite level for the duration of his contact. I’d prefer he was an edge guy like Watt where more game changing plays can be made, but Sapp seemed to dominate on the inside when he was at his peak and I think Suh might be an even better player than Sapp. Suh probably elevates our D back to a top 5 unit if we can get the secondary taken care of. Our LBs can focus more on coverage and should have to worry about second level blocking much less. I think the Lazor offense might be Kelly-like in it’s ability to put up 23-25 ppg regardless of elite talent and if the defense can get back to sub 20 ppg we are a playoff team next year.

On the other hand…. the room for error is very small now. We have to hit on an above average % of draft picks, we have to develop and start plenty of younger guys, and we’d better stay healthy. Suh is unpredictable and I’m not sure if he’ll be a great leader. Is Tannehill ready to lead the offense? We aren’t getting it from our coach, that much is for certain. The team will figure out a way to make the cap work and it should be relatively easy this year. If we don’t find young, cheap talent and develop it well the next few years could be pretty ugly. It’s also going to be difficult to retain our good young players beyond their rookie deals.

So I love the move as a short term shot at a SB run the next year or two. I hate that we aren’t one of the few organizations that have a proven system in place to manage the cap/roster and be competitive every year. I hate that we don’t have an elite HC. I’m praying that Tannehill keeps growing and can turn into the franchise QB we dream of. Given the situation, I can’t think of a better idea than Suh. Gives us a legit reason to believe this year and I guess that’s all you can ask for.

PS. My sympathies to Stanger. John Denney never gets mentioned around here. Maybe he’s a good candidate to replace your homeboy Fields?

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Well said drg. Pretty much 20/20 with how I feel. I do love the thought of Suh, especially think I think pressure up the middle disrupts a QB play to play more than an edge rusher does (even if the DE might get more sacks)…….but it comes at a price in terms of what you can do elsewhere.

And Fields ain’t gone yet……….not till he actually inks on with another team.

  8. Tim Knight's avatar Silly Tim says:

Boulder, Philbin not being able to handle Wallace is a made up thing by fans like you and nothing more. Just saying it doesn’t make it true. Wallace can’t handle Wallace and that’s where it ends.

  9. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Right now I’m really rooting for a trade down. Tend to do that most years, but now we have to plan for a future that has both Suh and Tanny under big contracts. The more starters we have under rookie contracts the better.

Would love one of you mocksters who ends up with 12 picks in the 2nd and 3rd round to be running the phones on draft day.

    ————————————–
Wallace brings negativity to the locker room. He openly complains about the playcalling and not getting the ball more. He doesnt pay attention in WR meetings. He doesnt show up for voluntary team building/player organized things. He sets himself apart from his team and only cares about Mike Wallace. Suh has his anger issues as reported by the different things he has done on the field. He brings a nasty and maybe isnt in full control over it. Inside the locker room though he is reported to be to himself and comes in and does his job and puts in a lot of work honing his craft. That isnt the same type of person and one is a lot easier to control than the other.

  12. drg's avatar drg says:

    Keep hope alive!

Good point about Suh and if there’s one thing that Tommy doesn’t like it’s pressure up the middle. That’s the best way to disrupt the patsies offense.

  13. drg's avatar drg says:

    Tim,

I think it’s pretty well proven Philbin can’t deal with strong personalities.

I was never a fan of the Wallace signing and don’t think he’s all that, but it’s in both sides best interest to make it work this season. I don’t understand the whining and bitching from Wallace. He’s making huge money in a great market and putting up numbers similar to his career averages. Is all this over not getting an extra couple of deep ball attempts? Stupid.

  16. D's avatar D says:

DRG your point about little margin for error i think is spot on. You are right, because we have multiple needs and we are making such a large investment in one, we do have little error for how things turn out in the others, and we kind of do have to hit a home run with this one. Thats where i think most differ. Im less worried about the homerun of this selection. It does mean we are going to need some guys to step up at other spots, but i think they are primed to. We also need to hit homeruns with our first three picks this years draft, but again, there is a lot of talent so i think thats a possibility too. I am definately taking an optimistic view of this situation, but i dont see at this point who anyone could see this as anything worse than 50/50, and those are generally the odds you face every year with.

The good fan/bad fan thing is still fuckin old and also exaggerated but have at that too, just because you think that also doesn’t make it true. It’s a sensitivity thing.

When someone makes a post like this guy and that guy are fuckin idiots and they suck etc. and someone disagrees with it, of course you’re going to get different opinions. Not sure why that automatically becomes good fan/bad fan but whatever. It could just be that two people think the other is wrong.

  23. Tim Knight's avatar Silly Tim says:

I also don’t think Wallace has a strong personality. I think he just happens to be selfish and a bit of a whiny bitch. A shitty attitude doesn’t mean a strong personality. Ray Lewis had a strong personality who challenged his entire team and worked harder than everyone else.

I know some of you wonder why I can be so excited about a high priced FA coming in to play on this team with other needs.
It’s very simple IMO, the most important position on offense to me is the QB and the most important position on D for me is the DT position. When you start a team from scratch, you do so with each respective position on both sides.

  35. Al in MIA's avatar Al in MIA says:

    FFR,
A great DL makes everyone else behind them look good. Never happens the other way around.

  36. New Age's avatar New Age says:

I think we all have Dolphins PTSD. We expect for something bad to happen. I think this signing was awesome myself. Clay isn’t worth $8 per year and I dont really think he is worth 7. Maybe if he had started more than one season out of four, I would think different. He’s coming off an injury plagued year. Talk about possible fools gold. Or we could mention the giant contract for an injury plagued LT last year that most were on board for(me included).

You have to find ways to get better. This team was awful by the end last year. To see an average backup like Geno Smith torch our defense was horrible. Now, we actually have a run defense if the other guys can just help Suh. He’s that good. He will make the entire defense better. No team doesn’t have holes. No team is perfect. We won’t be perfect this year but we getting another game changer on D. Grimes, Wake, and now Suh. We have a great draft position and the ability to get a game changing WR early.

Hell, one of the best things about Suh is that we will finally know who is a decent OL player and who isn’t. This guy will abuse average and he will make our OL better just by practicing against them. I dont know of as more violent guy on the DL. That’s exactly what we need

    • New Age's avatar New Age says:

Meant that Clay had started in every game.

    • BoulderPhinfan's avatar BoulderPhinfan says:

this team played a lot better defense the beginning of last year than the end. To me that means we had enough talent on defense to be good. They just gave up and stopped playing to their potential. That to me is a leadership issue not a talent issue.

      • New Age's avatar New Age says:

I disagree. I think they were injured all over the place and just couldn’t compete. We also had the same run stopping issues the past two years late on the defense. Just not good enough to last for 16 games.

  37. CaliGigi's avatar CaliGigi says:

    FFR: lol my bad!! 🙂

    Tim,

Agree with your thoughts on Wallace. I have little patience for him. One of the highest paid WRs in the league and putting up good numbers. Try being a team leader and leave your ego at the door. His behavior isn’t on Philbin.

Regarding Philbin, I don’t blame him for everything. I just don’t think he makes a difference in any dramatic way and I’d like a lot more from my HC. To me, he’s not a players coach, doesn’t motivate the team, isn’t an elite XO guy, and his teams haven’t finished strong. Just about every team “leader” has been shown the door because it seems Philbin doesn’t want to deal with them. I agree that he probably is the fall guy for a lot of things that weren’t his doing, but I would feel better about him if he displayed some skills to offset everything else.

    http://espn.go.com/nfl/player/stats/_/id/14145/charles-clay

    • New Age's avatar New Age says:

Tim, that was the year he was awesome. One year out of four. I’m not trying to downplay him but we have rose colored glasses for some guys because of potential and their story. He hasn’t been a top 5 TE the past 4 years at any point. Even in his best year, he wasn’t top 5 in any of the TE stats that really matter.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Silly Tim says:

Last year he was very productive while banged up with that knee all year. I put a lot of value on that. Some guys don’t play through injuries. He’s also not just a TE. He’s very productive per touch and I would have a high value on him if I was a GM. We don’t have to agree.

I was pointing out his two years of production because I’ve seen people make statements like he’s only done it for one year.

      • New Age's avatar New Age says:

Oh, well I agree with that. He is a very talented player that I don’t want to lose. I just can’t agree that keeping Clay is anywhere near as important to the team as getting Suh. It’s not really even comparable(in my eyes). He also hasn’t yet shown a complete recovery from the injury either.

  45. Tim Knight's avatar Silly Tim says:

drg, people can have any opinion they want about anyone like our HC. What I find annoying is people making stuff up because they don’t like him. • D's avatar D says:

In case of Dolphins who are likely 1 and done in FA, or very little left to offer other FA’s, what benefit do they have?

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

I agree — it has to be the agents. And on top of hoping someone swoops in, my guess it is also feeding a bone to their favorite “leakers” in the media. They’ll call in the favor down the road when they have something else they want to get out there.

I think what you say about Philbin is pretty accurate. I’m sure I go overboard occasionally, because in my eyes, he’s been given a very long rope. Realistically, in 3 years, he’s already hired and fired his OC and DC, and that’s a lot more rope than many other HC’s get, and all that without producing anything better than average. There certainly isn’t a lot to like about that.

  69. getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

The Boston Herald reports the Patriots are allowing CB Brandon Browner to “explore his value around the league.”
Monday is the deadline for the Pats to exercise Browner’s $1.9 million team option. If they do, Browner then takes home a $2 million roster bonus on Tuesday.
He’d come with a $4.8 million cap number for 2015, something the Pats want to reduce. It sounds like they’ll cut him loose absent a reduction. Cutting Browner would be a sign the Pats are planning for Darrelle Revis to return for a second season in New England.

  74. Al in MIA's avatar Al in MIA says:

    GDP,
I have no idea why the Patriots would bother setting the market for Brandon Browner. It’s smart to let other teams decide his value. I watched a few Pats games this year and Browner was consistantly given the Jimmy Wilson treatment by OC and teams around the NFL. Browner also would get flagged repeatedly for interference. His value is already maxamized playing protected in Belichick’s scheme. It’s buyer beware IMO.

  75. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Here is some perspective on the Suh signing

On one trotter, it’s a real hefty contract for a non-qb and will affect our cap situation for years

On the other trotter, SUH WILL EAT TOM BRADY’S LIVER!

  76. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Be wary of what you do with the cap. Here is why the Lions couldn’t keep Suh this year and we had the chance to get him.
    ————————
By converting a big chunk of his salaries for those seasons into bonuses ($8.7 million of his $9.3 million salary in 2012 and $11.5 million of his $12.2 million salary in 2013), the Lions cleared up space under the salary cap. The downside is the money saved on the salary caps those seasons were pushed to the end of Suh’s contract. His salary cap figure for the 2014 season grew to $22.4 million, the largest in the NFL that year, even though his salary was a far-more reasonable $12.6 million.

When a team places a franchise tag on a player, they must either pay him the average of the five highest-paid players at that position or give him a salary that is 20% higher than his salary cap figure from the year before, whichever is higher. Because Suh’s salary cap figure in 2014 was so absurd, the Lions would have been forced to pay him $26.9 million in 2015.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Silly Tim says:

They screwed up by not signing him to an extension.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Only reason they didn’t screw up is if they already knew they couldn’t keep him, but even then they could have set him for the franchise tag for one year or even two.

  81. getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

Al, I agree Suh better be eating Brady’s lunch. A big push from the DL is the prescribed formula the Giants used twice to beat the Pasts.
I knew we were trying to build that here and many thought we has that in our Dl along with Kacy Rodgers. But Odrick & Starks seemed to fall short or were schemed wrongly, thus the ends didn’t fare as well either.

No more excuses now! If they can’t make it work with Suh then Coyle & Philbin should be sent packing!!!

    • Al in MIA's avatar Al in MIA says:

Amen. We will really see if Coyle uses his fearsome front aggressively or backpedals to a 3 man rush on 3rd and longs as he did last season. He’s out the door if he uses the latter.

Jaguars agreed to terms with DL Jared Odrick on a deal worth $7 million per season.
The cap-rich Jaguars add Odrick to a free-agency haul that already includes Julius Thomas and Jermey Parnell. It’s an underrated signing, as 27-year-old Odrick can step in as a 307-pound “big” defensive end for Gus Bradley. Odrick will likely play three technique until Sen’Derrick Marks (ACL) returns. Odrick posted 16.5 sacks over the last four years for the Dolphins, showing an ability to push the pocket from the interior while also playing at a plus level against the run.

Stanger, the Lions offered him not much less than us. If they signed him to an extension a couple of years ago when they realized what they had, they probably keep him cheaper than what we just paid him or what they offered him.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

I think they offered like $12 million less, and that doesn’t even take into account the state tax issue. Could very well have been a face saving offer.

And for sure, extension would have kept him in the fold and for less. They did what they did instead. Their mistake, but then we don’t know if Suh was ameanable either. For all we know he was just waiting out his rookie contract to move elsewhere and his agent made it happen.

    —-
The escalators were negotiated by the players union for a reason. It forces an employer to commit to a long term contract rather than play around with 1 year deals (deferral attempts).

The franchise tag really is designed as a 1 year holdover with some teams carrying a player on it for consecutive years (Miami did that with Soliai I believe) if it’s reasonable.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

For sure, but in their case they would have been able to put up with escaltors except for the fact their restructures pushed his cap hit so high. Getting him for the average of the top 5 at his position would have been a bargain.

He wasn’t one of the privledged ones coming out as you might recall he went to work between the draft and training camp because he needed the money and that was only a few short years ago. IMO, there has been a significant amount of history where white people drove the divide between the races, but to me in past few years it has very significantly shift to blacks doing the driving. Thats not so say there arent shithead ractist whites out there but there seems to be more jumping on the race bandwagon by the black community, specifically leaders of that community in recent events.
