ABSOLUTE PERFECTION: THE 1972 MIAMI DOLPHINS

By:  Randy Campbell (OLD DOLFAN)

GAME 6: OCT. 22, 1972 – BUFFALO at MIAMI

The Buffalo Bills were a charter member of the American Football League.  In 1959 AFL founder Lamar Hunt reached out to insurance mogul and automobile heir Ralph Wilson, Jr., to see if he was interested in owning a franchise in the new league.  Wilson, a very wealthy man, was a minority owner of the Detroit Lions.  But he wanted his own team.  Hunt gave Wilson a choice of at least 3 cities: Miami; Buffalo; Cincinnati; and, perhaps, 2 other cities.  Wilson was turned down in his effort to place a team in Miami.  He then approached civic leaders in Buffalo.  At the time, Buffalo was a city of over 500,000 people, making it one of the 25 largest cities in the U.S.  Along with Buffalo, Wilson received strong support from the nearby cities of Niagara Falls and Rochester.  So a deal was signed and the Buffalo Bills were ready to play in ancient War Memorial Stadium (built to honor veterans of World War ONE!).

53 years later, 95 year old Ralph Wilson STILL owns the Buffalo Bills.  Unfortunately, the population in western New York state is only about half of what it was in 1960.  In a league known for wild, high-scoring offenses, the Bills were a defensive standout in the early years of the AFL.  Their 1964 team allowed just 913 yards rushing for an entire season (a record that still stands). And that ’64 Bills defense registered 50 sacks KCphoto4Carlton1964Away700w-300x235in a 14-game season, an all-time pro football record that has never been broken!  In both 1964 and 1965 the Bills won the AFL Championship Game.  The ’65 title stands as Buffalo’s last championship in ANY MAJOR PROFESSIONAL SPORT!  Those Bills teams featured 250 pound fullback Cookie Gilchrist, quarterbacks Jack Kemp and Daryle LaMonica, and wideouts Ernie Warlick and Elbert (“Wheels”) Dubenion, a world class sprinter and the fastest man to ever play in the AFL.  After a horrid 1968 season, the Bills selected Heisman Trophy winner O. J. Simpson as the #1 pick in the 1969 draft.  He would become the face of the franchise for nearly a decade.  The arrival of Simpson brought little improvement to Buffalo’s won-lost record.  In 1970, the Bills were 3-10-1.  In 1971 they were 1-13.  The Bills also lost all four games to Miami during those two seasons.  In fact, Buffalo would go “0 for the ’70’s” against Miami, losing all 20 games to the Dolphins in that decade!  NOT ONCE did O. J. Simpson ever play on a Buffalo team that defeated the ‘Fins!!  Lou Saban, who had coached Buffalo to their two AFL titles in ’64 and ’65, returned for a second tour of duty in 1972.  In week #2 of the season, Buffalo upset San Francisco 27-20.  Then, in week #4, the Bills destroyed New England 38-14.  Saban was making a difference.

Miami took the opening kickoff and drove deep into Buffalo territory.  From the five, Morrall handed off to Mercury Morriss who sped into the end zone.  The first quarter ended with Miami leading 7-0.  The Bills turned things around in the second quarter.  John Leypoldt booted a 35-yard field goal to narrow the gap to 7-3.  An Earl Morrall pass to Morris bounced off Morris’ hands right to Buffalo’s Ken Lee who returned it 16 yards for a touchdown and a 10-7 Buffalo advantage.   Just before halftime, Morrall threw an incomplete swing pass to Morris.  It was clearly a forward pass.  But the side judge ruled it a lateral and gave the ball to Buffalo.  Leypoldt’s 34-yard field goal gave the Bills a 13-7 lead at the half.

Coach Don Shula gave his players a blistering halftime lecture.  They came out of the locker room with an extra dose of motivation.

O.J. Simpson Tackled by Dolphin's Defense

Two days earlier, defensive tackle Manny Fernandez was in a hospital suffering from pneumonia.  On the second play of the second half, Fernandez slipped a block and took a direct hand-off from a stunned Bills quarterback Dennis Shaw at the Buffalo 10 yard line!  “What I liked,” said Larry Csonka, “was the way Manny didn’t even say ‘thank you’ when he took the ball!”  Csonka, for his part, did say “Thank you” to Fernandez after scoring on a 10-yard run on the very next play.  Miami now had a very shaky 14-13 lead.  Later in the third quarter, Garo Yepremian lined-up what would be the longest field goal of his career.  His 54-yard effort WAS GOOD with room to spare!  17-13, Miami after three quarters.  A John Leypoldt 45-yard field goal narrowed the gap to 17-16.  Everyone was on the edge of their seats!  Leypoldt’s kick-off flew completely out of the end zone.  Miami’s ball at their own 20.

1972_w17

A calm Earl Morrall took the field.  Mixing running and passing plays Morrall moved the ‘Fins to the Buffalo 15 yard line.  From there, Mercury Morris bolted into the end zone giving Miami a 24-16 lead.  A few minutes later, Buffalo scored on a Mike Taliaferro to Jim Braxton 6-yard pass play.  Mysteriously, coach Lou Saban kicked the extra point rather than going for two points and a tie score.  “We thought we had plenty of time to kick the winning field goal,” said Saban.  He was proven wrong.  Morrall’s offense ate up almost all of the remaining time.  The “No Name Defense” did the rest.  Miami had barely escaped with a 24-23 win in a bizarre game that featured penalties, blown officials calls, muffed passes returned for touchdowns and a highly questionable decision by the losing head coach.  80,010 Dolphin fans left the Orange Bowl relieved and happy.

Next up: Earl Morrall would return to Baltimore to face the team that released him earlier in the year.  Legendary quarterback John Unitas and over 64,000 roaring fans at Memorial Stadium would be waiting for the Dolphins.

ABSOLUTE PERFECTION was still alive.  The 1972 Miami Dolphins were now 6-0.

I must be a fool-no need for anyone to agree with me- but I don’t get the excitement of signing Revis for the jets. I have never seen his value. I realize he must be good, and I realize teams try to throw away from him.. But the emphasis on the short passing game would seem to minimize the value of his apparent ability. I am open to schooling.. never mind they are giving up $39 mil in the first 2 years of his contract and still don’t have anyone to throw the ball.

Saw a lot of discussion last night on Jordan Cameron. The concussion thing is tricky, is his history that of Ryan Swope or are we looking at someone more in-line of Owen Daniels who many said his career was over when the Texans let him walk. His price tag will be reasonable due to TE needy teams pretty much making their moves ready. Here’s the kicker though if his concussion issues are in the past you see looking at a TRUE seam threat TE. I wish we could keep Clay because he’s home grown…..with that said Cameron is a better pure athlete and will be a bigger redzone presence. Remember him burning Grimes on multiple occasions in 2013.

    Try,
Rex ,and subsequently Bowles as well, play defense with getting pressure from blitzing. They rely on shutdown corners to be able to cover receivers 1 on 1 so they can send more guys in to rush than ordinarily what the O accounted for blocking. They want to, of course gets sacks, but also hurry the qb and force him to throw turnovers because with the extra rushers he may miss his hot reads or have no one open quickly enough to even throw to.That’s one way to to do it.

The Dolphins, on the other hand, don’t want to be a blitzing team. We want our front four to get to the QB and keep the other seven guys back in coverage. The theory being that if you get to the QB with just the front four you have enough guys in coverage to take away all routes and thus should get more turnovers or negative plays.

That’s why you see the Stej put a premium on the corner while we lock up the best interior D-lineman in the game.

    • TryPod's avatar Try Pod says:

Thanks Son- I’m glad there are people who actually know stuff I have not put my head into for awhile now. But Revis- I’d he that much better than every other corner? And since most teams seen to be working on a quick cycle offense, doesn’t that kinda minimize the effectiveness of the corners, particularly if they are more Deion and less Lott.. or am I being more obtuse than normal? I still readily accept that my hatred of anything jets does cloud my ability to be realistic.

      • TryPod's avatar Try Pod says:

        I’d he= is he

      • TryPod's avatar Try Pod says:

By quick cycle I mean quick huddle, quick count, quick throw/run, repeat…

      • son of a son of a shula's avatar son of a son of a shula says:

Revis is the best lock-down corner. That’s why teams covet him because you put him out there on anyone and almost never have to roll safety help to his side.
The short quick passing game is an antidote to that but teams will give you short yardage all day, meaning they’ll give you inside the 20’s all day but when the field condenses they blitz the crap out of you.

    • D's avatar D says:

Problem with the jets approach is unless ya have marquee coverage safeties and or very good coverage LBs it leaves you vulnerable to passing games like ours with shallow crossing routes and quick slants by we and the out of the slot. Blitz and you leave your middle open somewhere.

    • jetsssuck's avatar jetsssuck says:

i look forward to our young CB’s jumping routes much more with Suh and the front four applying more pressure and less time for the qb to pick and choose who to throw to. Our cb’s should be able to play inside shoulder more.

He is a very good receiving back. He caught a lot of screens and check down passes. Yale runs a spread option offense and they have a quality QB in Clemson transfer Morgan Roberts so their offense looked a lot like ours. They were a fun team to watch last year. But my point is Varga would transition fairly easily into our offense.

Ken, a Connecticut guy backing a Yale player… 🙂 Yale’s offense this past year really turned that team around… I tend to give credit to a very legit QB in Roberts and an amazing WR Deon Randall. I wonder if this threat stretched things for Varga. Was Varga the beneficiary of two D1 talents who decided to play in the Ivy League?

    • son of a son of a shula's avatar son of a son of a shula says:

      Hmmm, I wonder

    • dbolt48's avatar dbolt48 says:

You can wonder that or you can ask if his ability as a runner opened up the offense for the passing game. I don’t know. I do know at the senior bowl he gave everyone hell as a runner.

      • Rhino's avatar Rhino says:

dbolt, I hear ya. Yale went from last to the conference title game because of their offense. Varga behind some legit O-line at senior bowl? So here’s the “diamond in the rough” question…. does he get drafted? if so what round value?

      • dbolt48's avatar dbolt48 says:

        Rhino,
I think he gets drafted between 5-7. He was probably the most consistent back at the Sr. Bowl.

  35. Rhino's avatar Rhino says:

getterdone, my gut says Starks will not return. He will definitely get more $ somewhere else, even on a 2 yr deal. If he was smart with his money over the years, he might even sign with the “contender” of choice. He’d have to take back up money here, and a guy who has started for so long, and is so competitive, likely won’t see it that way.

  36. Rhino's avatar Rhino says:

D, Mathews to Philly? wow, if he stays healthy (lol, charger fans mantra!) Philly got a ‘young Gore’. But, he won’t stay healthy. 😦 I’m wondering if we bring Moreno back.

  37. Ken's avatar Ken says:

    Rhino:
Varga has been a stud before Roberts transferred from Clemson. He was putting up huge numbers before last year. Last year they finally got a passing game and Yale started winning but Varga’s production remained very similar.

  38. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

    With the signing of Suh
I see a lot more traditional 4-3 rather than hybrid
They might have a speed package with 3 DEs ont he line
but I don;t see us playing too much 3-4

So IMO it makes it less likely for Jordan to move to OLB
I’m thinkign we see Jordan at DE a lot more
but maybe in a Nickel package he can play LB?

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I mean if you want to maximize the benfot of Suh you probably have to play 4-3 right?

Damn there are some reports, heard a little about it back at combine a little more yesterday and then today its big time rumored that Saints not only are interested in Jameis Winston, but are potentially trading Drew Brees to TB for the no1 pick. Im hoping this isnt accurate, but the rumors are really ramping up about it.

    • Rhino's avatar Rhino says:

Brees’ contract, like so many other QBs, makes it hard to rebuild. This would be a blockbuster like no other this past decade. Brees is the post-Katrina ‘god’ in New Orleans.

    • D's avatar D says:

They did work him out at combine, and they seem to be in offense rebuilding mode after trading Graham. They now have 2 firsts, and if this trade is true they essentially could draft QB, WR, TE and really revamp their offense around him. Thats bad for us, unfortunately since the Saints pick right before us. They also need CB help and could take Waynes with 13, but if they go rebuild on offense, it might be a WR.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

  48. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Honestly, you don’t need Starks or Odrick with Suh

Suh is gonna be on the field 85% of the time
You don;t need a heavy DT rotation when a guy plays that much

If Mitchell is an early down guy, they might play some kind of speed package on passign downs, where Suh is the only DT on the field

You can work in guys like Francis, Johnson and Fede youn guys into the rotoation
and really I want to see those guys get a chance to play a little

There really aren;t enough snaps to have Starks or Odrick on the team, if you want to work in the younger guys

  49. getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

Rhino, true, I also think freeing up another $5M from Starks could help in throwing another $1M Clay’s way if they feel he’s worth it. His knee still worries me.

Dbolt and Ken…. Varga in 6th or 7th and I’d be fine with that. He’s a ‘thumper’ for sure so special teams and perhaps red zone (cuz he has a nose for the end zone it seems)… I think his value will rely on if he is ready to block at this level. If he can’t block at this level, then don’t bother. I don’t know anything about his blocking ability.

    ________________________________________
I don’t see that happening. Listening to Schefter on the ride in to work this morning and he said any talk of Saints trading Brees is non-sense. No way it will happen.

I really liked what Anthony Johnson was doing last year, coming back healthy he’d likely be the third guy in the rotation. I think he’ll feed off of Suh and become a beast in his own right.

looks more like we are planning on a beastly d-line and reducing LB payroll by going LB in draft. Find someone who can TACKLE !!!! (seems like a silly thing to request for a football player, but a talented player with tackling fundamentals is a star in this league).

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

LOL — but how Taylor and Davis do might be the most important thing for our D right now. We pretty much know what we have in all the other starters at least.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

No doubt, but I’m not expecting much if anything from those guys. I get one of the better CB’s in this draft and don’t worry about it if they start biting. Grimes is 32, and he can’t play at a high level forever, so to have a glut of talent at CB is NEVER a bad thing.

Stanger, Brice McCain hasn’t done a lot, he finally flashed a lil. I hope it’s treated as a low level signing. I don’t like his size either @ 5’9 187.

Another idea at TE for us is Vernon Davis. I heard WAY back he might be on his way out in SF, but with the fact Willis retired and a few other cap cleanup moves have happened, im not sure if will happen now. Still he did sell his house in SF, so maybe he could be an option for us if the Clay thing doesnt work out.

  67. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

MIke E — we could go CB in say the 2nd or third, but it would be so much nicer if the staff felt good with what we have. A good number of holes to fill.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

That’s what I’m thinking. I can’t see going CB 1st RD, when we really need one of the top WR’s. Can’t leave Parker or White on the board. At least I wouldn’t. Unless Trae Waynes was there at #14 and they have him rated higher than Parker or White, but I’d be shocked if they did.

    Making that 3 DB’s!

  69. getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

Mike E, Suh leaves a lot bigger piles than that lil ankle biter.

  70. D's avatar D says:

If Anthony is their target, then really makes me think WR in the first. Only position at 14 i could see us taking other than WR is ILB. McKinney might slip to 2nd too and if so i think they would likely choose him over Anthony. They have interviewed McKinney twice now.

  71. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Starks was franchised in 2013, then signed a two year deal as a UFA last year. He was never cut before now.

  72. D's avatar D says:

  74. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I think WR, OL, LB or CB at #14.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Don’t think there will be a CB at #14 who is worthy. Not an LB who fits our needs either. Think that too high for a G too.

Both Scherff and Collins are considered guys who can play tackle or guard. I do not think protecting your QB in a division with tough defenses is a bad pick.

    • D's avatar D says:

Still think we have eyes on a WR, but OT/OG isnt a bad pick either.

      • D's avatar D says:

Incidentally i dont think Collins is that good. I liked him early on, but more i watched his tape less interested i became that he is as good as his hype. Scherff is the real deal, but i also think its likely wont be there at 14. Id like him better than almost any pick outside White and Parker.

    4 – La’el Collins, OT/G, LSU
