ABSOLUTE PERFECTION: THE 1972 MIAMI DOLPHINS

By:  Randy Campbell (OLD DOLFAN)

GAME 6: OCT. 22, 1972 – BUFFALO at MIAMI

The Buffalo Bills were a charter member of the American Football League.  In 1959 AFL founder Lamar Hunt reached out to insurance mogul and automobile heir Ralph Wilson, Jr., to see if he was interested in owning a franchise in the new league.  Wilson, a very wealthy man, was a minority owner of the Detroit Lions.  But he wanted his own team.  Hunt gave Wilson a choice of at least 3 cities: Miami; Buffalo; Cincinnati; and, perhaps, 2 other cities.  Wilson was turned down in his effort to place a team in Miami.  He then approached civic leaders in Buffalo.  At the time, Buffalo was a city of over 500,000 people, making it one of the 25 largest cities in the U.S.  Along with Buffalo, Wilson received strong support from the nearby cities of Niagara Falls and Rochester.  So a deal was signed and the Buffalo Bills were ready to play in ancient War Memorial Stadium (built to honor veterans of World War ONE!).

53 years later, 95 year old Ralph Wilson STILL owns the Buffalo Bills.  Unfortunately, the population in western New York state is only about half of what it was in 1960.  In a league known for wild, high-scoring offenses, the Bills were a defensive standout in the early years of the AFL.  Their 1964 team allowed just 913 yards rushing for an entire season (a record that still stands). And that ’64 Bills defense registered 50 sacks KCphoto4Carlton1964Away700w-300x235in a 14-game season, an all-time pro football record that has never been broken!  In both 1964 and 1965 the Bills won the AFL Championship Game.  The ’65 title stands as Buffalo’s last championship in ANY MAJOR PROFESSIONAL SPORT!  Those Bills teams featured 250 pound fullback Cookie Gilchrist, quarterbacks Jack Kemp and Daryle LaMonica, and wideouts Ernie Warlick and Elbert (“Wheels”) Dubenion, a world class sprinter and the fastest man to ever play in the AFL.  After a horrid 1968 season, the Bills selected Heisman Trophy winner O. J. Simpson as the #1 pick in the 1969 draft.  He would become the face of the franchise for nearly a decade.  The arrival of Simpson brought little improvement to Buffalo’s won-lost record.  In 1970, the Bills were 3-10-1.  In 1971 they were 1-13.  The Bills also lost all four games to Miami during those two seasons.  In fact, Buffalo would go “0 for the ’70’s” against Miami, losing all 20 games to the Dolphins in that decade!  NOT ONCE did O. J. Simpson ever play on a Buffalo team that defeated the ‘Fins!!  Lou Saban, who had coached Buffalo to their two AFL titles in ’64 and ’65, returned for a second tour of duty in 1972.  In week #2 of the season, Buffalo upset San Francisco 27-20.  Then, in week #4, the Bills destroyed New England 38-14.  Saban was making a difference.

Miami took the opening kickoff and drove deep into Buffalo territory.  From the five, Morrall handed off to Mercury Morriss who sped into the end zone.  The first quarter ended with Miami leading 7-0.  The Bills turned things around in the second quarter.  John Leypoldt booted a 35-yard field goal to narrow the gap to 7-3.  An Earl Morrall pass to Morris bounced off Morris’ hands right to Buffalo’s Ken Lee who returned it 16 yards for a touchdown and a 10-7 Buffalo advantage.   Just before halftime, Morrall threw an incomplete swing pass to Morris.  It was clearly a forward pass.  But the side judge ruled it a lateral and gave the ball to Buffalo.  Leypoldt’s 34-yard field goal gave the Bills a 13-7 lead at the half.

Coach Don Shula gave his players a blistering halftime lecture.  They came out of the locker room with an extra dose of motivation.

O.J. Simpson Tackled by Dolphin's Defense

Two days earlier, defensive tackle Manny Fernandez was in a hospital suffering from pneumonia.  On the second play of the second half, Fernandez slipped a block and took a direct hand-off from a stunned Bills quarterback Dennis Shaw at the Buffalo 10 yard line!  “What I liked,” said Larry Csonka, “was the way Manny didn’t even say ‘thank you’ when he took the ball!”  Csonka, for his part, did say “Thank you” to Fernandez after scoring on a 10-yard run on the very next play.  Miami now had a very shaky 14-13 lead.  Later in the third quarter, Garo Yepremian lined-up what would be the longest field goal of his career.  His 54-yard effort WAS GOOD with room to spare!  17-13, Miami after three quarters.  A John Leypoldt 45-yard field goal narrowed the gap to 17-16.  Everyone was on the edge of their seats!  Leypoldt’s kick-off flew completely out of the end zone.  Miami’s ball at their own 20.

1972_w17

A calm Earl Morrall took the field.  Mixing running and passing plays Morrall moved the ‘Fins to the Buffalo 15 yard line.  From there, Mercury Morris bolted into the end zone giving Miami a 24-16 lead.  A few minutes later, Buffalo scored on a Mike Taliaferro to Jim Braxton 6-yard pass play.  Mysteriously, coach Lou Saban kicked the extra point rather than going for two points and a tie score.  “We thought we had plenty of time to kick the winning field goal,” said Saban.  He was proven wrong.  Morrall’s offense ate up almost all of the remaining time.  The “No Name Defense” did the rest.  Miami had barely escaped with a 24-23 win in a bizarre game that featured penalties, blown officials calls, muffed passes returned for touchdowns and a highly questionable decision by the losing head coach.  80,010 Dolphin fans left the Orange Bowl relieved and happy.

Next up: Earl Morrall would return to Baltimore to face the team that released him earlier in the year.  Legendary quarterback John Unitas and over 64,000 roaring fans at Memorial Stadium would be waiting for the Dolphins.

ABSOLUTE PERFECTION was still alive.  The 1972 Miami Dolphins were now 6-0.

Couple guys for TE interest me might be later round guys. Waller, Saxton, Jean Sifrin, Rory Anderson, CJ Uzomah. Some of these may even fall to UDFA. They all have a lot of upside, just kinda raw talent or werent used much in college as a receiver. Uzomah and Anderson both fall into that latter category, and both likely very good receivers as they have all the skills for it.

Revis has been all over the place and took a lot of risk, but look how it turned out for him….not so different from Suh.
    —————–
In 2013, Revis signed a five-year deal with $0 guaranteed. He has since secured $68 million for himself. Here is his past and future salary by year:

2013 — $17 million ($16 million from Tampa Bay, $1 million from New York Jets)
    2014 — $12 million (New England)
2015 — $16 million guaranteed (New York Jets)
2016 — $17 million guaranted (New York Jets)
2017 — $17 million ($6 mil guaranteed) (New York Jets)

Free agent RBs Mikel Leshoure, Felix Jones and Michael Bush will all participate in the NFL’s March 22 Veteran Combine.
That’s in addition to other notable names like Michael Sam and Adam Carriker. The event is unlikely to result in many deals that otherwise wouldn’t happen, but is certainly a positive addition to the NFL schedule.
    _____________________________________________
Maybe Suh vouches for Leshoure as our short yardage power back. 6’0 234.

    • D's avatar D says:

He has remarkable awful power for a back of his size. I dont get it, and really wouldnt want him. He was supposed to be hot shit coming out of college but never came close to expectations.

    from NFL.com.

It’s hard not to think of the Dolphins as a team perennially on the edge of a massive collapse and we can’t help but think this is a make-or-break year for a lot of key players there. No spotlight is brighter than the one shining on Ryan Tannehill, especially if he inks the mega-extension he’s been working on this offseason, giving Miami a pair of players that will likely eclipse the $200 million mark combined. If Tannehill works out, Tannenbaum has to feel good about the foundation of his roster and what lies ahead. If he ponies up and pays Tannehill, only to see the weight of the contract crush the former first-rounder, then the former Jets executive will have to deal with the pain of doling out two pretty awful deals to quarterbacks. Aside from Tannehill, though, the Ndamukong Suh deal places an incredible amount of pressure on the team to make a leap and contend for the division this year.

    • getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

Looks like my guy Max Garcia is just now starting to get some love from evaluators, he once was considered like a 6-UDFA now he is considered 4th overall OC prospect and 10th overall OG prospect with a 3-4th round grade. I still think he falls a little past 4th, 5th sounds about right to me but id be interested in him. I never understood how he was being viewed so poorly, now looks like people coming to their senses.

He was basically a non-factor. The dominant players are dominant every single week, they’re double-teamed just like he is. They never have bad days. (Suh) had plenty of bad days … Suh robbed the bank, and Joe Philbin is going to get framed for this bank robbery. Aponte is outside the player/personnel side of thing and just manages the numbers so i think she says what can and cant be done from a number standpoint but i still think Tannebaum has a little power over her as well.

      • getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

In some cases sure, Tannenbaum is an extension of the owner. We’ve seen owners get involved in player moves before, and we saw it here with Suh according to Ross himself.

      • getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

Hickey’s biggest authority will be over the draft. He did well there last year too.

      • D's avatar D says:

I think Ross did get involved by saying this guy is the real deal i wants it, but i do believe if it was fully and wholly irresponsible to do so, and we could not have afforded it without destroying the team, they would have told him so and he would have relented.

    • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Hickey is the talent evaluator and the guy who finds guys like McCain and Fede and the guy who drafted James and Landry. Tanenbaum is the guy who says to Aponte let’s go big and bold and get Suh. Tell us how we can make it happen financially. Aponte crunches the numbers on whoever they tell her to do the math on. Ross says money is no object, I’m in, Let’s build it. Philbin says we looked at the tape and this is who we f’ed up last year and we can let go with no pain and this is who we need to keep. It’s a great team.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

You know this how? Hickey is the hunter, Tannebaum helps with running the entire football program. The reason Hickey, Philbin and the coaches weren’t in the picture of the Suh signing is because they’re looking at other FAs and watching film of potential draftees, not Tannenbaum. But if it makes you feel better to view it the other way so be it.

    • getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

Yep, soon Tannenbaum will be coaching & calling plays too right? 🙄

  79. Jahndoh30's avatar jahndoh says:

Does it matter how the front office structure works anymore…as long as it works? We’re 0-0 this season, and the FO structure has changed, so lets see what works.

Is there ANY fan anywhere who really knows which person in the organization is ever most integral to success…or which is most appropriate to blame? Who found Cam Wake? Exactly, we don’t know. Do I care? No. Do I like the Suh signing or not? That’s all that matters today.

I don’t know to be honest, but I’m on board at this point. I hope he spells the beginning of the end of Tom Brady’s career and single handedly makes us 2 games better than last season. I know one thing for sure. They are TRYING like hell to make this into a playoff team. Would much rather see them try than just to play it safe, and I’d expect anyone who’s sick of 8-8 to feel similarly.

Hope that was neutral enough and not too preachy. It’s just how I feel about all the arguments that have divided us as a group for so long. Would just love to see some of the camaraderie that I originally sought when I started posting to Topix boards 15 years ago, rekindled for the cause of the 2015 Fins.

As Rumblefish always said: Go Fins! Hell Yeah!

  80. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Let’s compare the Mario Williams acquisition, due to money and buzz. Did he get them into the playoffs? No. Did he win two games for them by himself. Yes. And we have a better QB, soooo …

  81. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

I would also draft that former QB from Oklahoma now a TE. He is a good ball handler and huge and was used as a battering ram type TD machine from 3-8 yds out. He could be our HBack, FB, TE guy. He ran a fast 40 at the combine. He can throw a trick-play pass as well.

  82. Jahndoh30's avatar jahndoh says:

That deal tells me that they are planning on not signing free agents at all next year beyond Tannehill (and a few league minimum type deals). It also indicates they are likely to cull one more large contract next offseason, look out Wake, Wallace, Jones, (off the top of my head). It may also indicate that they anticipate a large increase in total Cap next year.

Lastly, it means we can also possibly get away from the contract in year 3, although I need to see more specifics about what is making up that 60M guaranteed beyond the 25.5 signing bonus.

    • New Age's avatar New Age says:

Hopefully it is also a sign that we will have most of what we need next year besides the draft upgrades. Honestly, a solid OL, a DL lead by Suh, and Tannehill locked up sounds like a lot of the pieces needed to compete at a high level.

AT 4:56 PM GDP said,”Maybe — he (ROSS) should give out free parking passes & free programs to all recurring season tix holders …displaced by the renovation.” WELL, GDP, that would be an OUTSTANDING PR MOVE by Ross and is therefore very UNLIKELY to happen. When Metamucil Carl Peterson first took over in Kansas City, Peterson immediately raised ticket and concession prices along with parking fees. “Bleed the fans for every nickel you can” was King Carl’s motto. When Peterson was finally fired by Lamar Hunt, he was one of the most hated persons in sports in the Kansas City area. And now, about 20 years later, King Carl is still the one who has Ross’s ear. –Fortunately for Peterson, I’ve never run into him at Sun Baked Stadium. It would be a memorable encounter, bet your ass on that!! –I absolutely despise the greedy, foul mouthed sonofabitch and the fact ROSS LOVES HIM says a lot about who Steve Ross really is.
    ————
NOW, GDP, as for the issues you raise: FREE PARKING PASSES for loyal season tix holders. ROSS actually raised parking fees in the cash lot this season from $20 to $35. This year, they’ll likely be HIGHER. Season tix holders got ’em for $20 but I’ll be amazed if they aren’t jacked up about 50 per cent THIS YEAR to $30 per game, including the exhibition games. –FREE PROGRAMS: Last year some programs were given awayFREE. But they ran out about 30-45 minutes before kickoff SO YOU COULD NOT EVEN GET ONE IF YOU WERE WILLING TO PAY!
    ————
SEASON TICKET CARDS supposedly gave you a 7-10 per cent discount on food & gear at the game. BUT BOTH OF MINE MALFUNCTIONED SO I DID NOT RECEIVE ANY DISCOUNTS!!
HELL, Stanger and I even had trouble getting into the Ravens game BECAUSE OUR SEASON TICKET CARDS WERE REJECTED BY THE SCANNERS!! Luckily, someone with a different scanner was brought in and we eventually were let in. I COULD mention other serious problems we had, such as the dangerous security issue in the parking lot at the Kansas City game (which scared the living shit out of my wife) but you get the picture. ROSS’s leadership of this franchise is full of greed and inefficiency, some of which is dangerous. There’s a realy good chance that me and my BOYZ will no longer be going to the stadium after this season.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

“ROSS actually raised parking fees in the cash lot this season from $20 to $35”

OD — that wasn’t my experience there. Was $25 like the year before except for a couple games when they raised it to $35 (the pats comes to mind)…..rest of the time I was there it was 25.

      • olddolphan's avatar olddolphan says:

An acquaintance at the Ravens game said parking in the cash lot cost him
$35. He also said he paid $20 for the second home game. Perhaps he was confused. One thing I CAN tel you is that there was a sign on the Turnpike indicating cash lot parking was $35 later in the season. But maybe it was a different lot.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Was always either $25 or $35 (for the Pats) in the lots I parked in. Could have been that for the Ravens too and I just don’t remember. When they popped it up for the Pats game though they taped the price onto the pre-printed $25 and then tore it off for the ones after.

Naples, Blake Bell is my sleeper steal for the draft, especially from the 5th rd on. I’d even consider him in 4th tho.
He’s a tad raw, but high ceiling like Tanny had. Remember how well QB>WR Matt Jones was before nose candy ruled his life?
Blake Bell is the next Jimmy Graham / Gronk type TE…IMO.

No team has the money to buy all the position needs. At some point you have to draft well, coach well, and hope guys stay healthy.
Hickey had a good opening draft…i look forward to see if he can keep that momentum going. Then it’s up to the coaching/development of those young players.

      • olddolphan's avatar olddolphan says:

No, in fact, Tannehill, J James, Landry, Wake, Albert, Grimes, and Pouncey are all good players, and last year we beat the Chargers 37-0 and we beat the Super Bowl Champions and Tannehill has beaten Luck, Brady x2, Wilson, MRyan, Bradford, and the ginger in Cincy.

I don’t know. I just feel good about the Fins right now…and that’s kinda nice. Suh is s Dolphin.

This is a 6 year deal. He very well could be the next Dolphin inducted into the HOF (though I hope that’ll be JT or even better, Zach Thomas), it’s worth getting just a WEE bit happy about!
