THE PORCINE ODDYSSEY #90:  SUH-DENLY

AccousticPiggy

I know there are a lot of opinions on whether the Dolphins should have signed Ndamukong Suh, especially given the price tag.  So I wrote this little ditty to put it in perspective.

PIGGY BEGINS TO PLAY HIS GUITAR

(singing)

I used to think that free agency was just a fairy tale
After that Mike Wallace contract and after Wheeler and Ellerbee
But if I had to do it all again, I wouldn’t change a thing
‘Cause somehow Aponte found cap room to sign and Pay Suh’s fee

InsertBradyHere1

(singing)

SUH-denly, oinks have new meaning to me
There’s piggies up above
And players that can change the way you play D
You wake up and SUH-denly, you’re a dominant defense

InsertBradyHere2

(singing)

Suh, you’re everything a Dolfan could want and more
One thousand tackles are not enough to oink how much I hate Brady
And now you’ve come to this sunny shore
Never felt like this before, now go kill Brady

InsertBradyHere3

(singing)

SUH-denly, oinks have new meaning to me
There’s piggies up above
Tom Brady will need a nurse to help him pee

You wake up and SUH-denly, you’re a dominant defense

NFL: Green Bay Packers at Detroit Lions

(singing)

Each day I squeal
That Tom Brady won’t play another game

InsertBradyHere5

(singing)

SUH-denly, oinks have new meaning to me
There’s piggies up above
potential damage to Brady’s organs makes me say Weeeeeeeeeeeeee

You wake up and SUH-denly, you’re a dominant defense

InsertBrady6

(singing)

SUH-denly, oinks have new meaning to me
There’s piggies up above
Suh, I want you end this cheaters career, pleeeeeeeeeeeeease

You wake up and SUH-denly, you’re a dominant defense

SuhGonnaEatYourLiver

(singing)

There’s piggies up above
And Suh is gonna eat your liver
You wake up and Suh-denly, you’re a dominant defense

    Al:
It’s not that I disagree that DT is an important position or that it’s worth spending big money on but we are talking astronomical money and there will be an affect on our ability to land FAs and retain key talent on the roster on a going forward basis. It may be worth it if Suh delivers as envisioned, if not we will be in a bit of trouble.

  2. D's avatar D says:

Man some of you have ulcers that have ulcers as much as you worry….can the team even get to preseason before you judge the next three years outcome?

    • I want this “team” to win — yes the thought of Suh crushing Tom Brady is thrilling but only if we beat them twice, make the playoffs and have a run at the Super Bowl. Anything short of that would be a failure IMO.

  3. son of a son of a shula's avatar son of a son of a shula says:

So whats your vision of what he needs to deliver to be worth it?

25 sacks and we wrap up a playoff birth in week 9.

  4. Jahndoh30's avatar jahndoh says:

Lol @ Gigi, take it from a long time Californian, ask for the stuff that tastes good but isn’t insanely potent. You’ll still get great quality, but actually might remember what happened when you wake up the next morning. 🙂

  5. What is the last team to win the Super Bowl with the top FA (biggest contract)?

    • son of a son of a shula's avatar son of a son of a shula says:

Off the top of my head I’d say Green bay with Reggie White. Interesting isn’t it?

      • TryPod's avatar Try Pod says:

Different eras, different rules, different emphasis. I don’t think the comparison is as close as you seem to.

    • Jahndoh30's avatar jahndoh says:

Did anyone make more than the 16M cash that Revis got last year? I have to figure his and Brady’s contracts were amongst the largest for the year, though I confess, I wouldn’t even know how to research this question.

      • son of a son of a shula's avatar son of a son of a shula says:

Right Jahn, the pats last year with Revis. It just wasn’t a long term deal but they won and hadn’t won all those years prior to having him.

  6. Jahndoh30's avatar jahndoh says:

Pretty crazy how excited the board is over the McCain signing huh? 🙂

  7. Ken's avatar Ken says:

    D:
My vision for Suh to be worth the price is that we are a top 5 D for the next 3 years and we make the playoffs in those 3 years. Short of that I think we invested too much money on one side of the ball and in one position at the expense of others

  8. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I have no concerns about Suh’s commitment. Injury is my only fear.

  9. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

As far as Suh is concerned, and what I expect . . .

I expect our defense to be consistently better, every week, and that includes the last 3 games of the season. I expect other players around him to play better, benefitting from the extra attention Suh will require from the offense, and I honestly expect to get into the playoffs, as long as we get a top WR in this draft, and a LB who can tackle and stay on the field for an entire season.

  10. Randy's avatar Randy says:

Suh is a very good talent, but he’s just one guy. Great defenses are built on the backs of more than one really good player. This team still has major concerns at safety, lb and cb. I don’t see any way Suh alone turns this defense into one that can win a championship…lif that’s what people consider a ‘championship defense”. And, as has been suggested, good coaches can take one player out of the game. It’s up to other guys to make plays when that happens. Do we have other guys who can make those plays? Outside of Wake doing it from time to time, who on our team makes game changing plays?

I’m excited as a fan to have a great player on our team, but I think folks are getting a little ahead of themselves about the extent of his impact on our defense. He will make us a better defense…but this defense still has several holes that need to be fixed. Can the team do that with a strapped salary structure after Suh’s contract?

  11. Jahn: I can handle mango blue dream but not kush – way too potent for me! I only take a few puffs anyway can’t handle more then that.

  12. son of a son of a shula's avatar son of a son of a shula says:

I expect Suh to be the best DT in the league as well as a polished pulling guard. I expect him to be pretty close to 100% on his field goal attempts and lead the league in touchbacks on his kick-offs. I expect him to have one of the best per attempt punting averages but also lead the league in kicks inside the opponents 20. Plus I think he’ll give Landry a lot of competition for return duties.

  13. Randy's avatar Randy says:

I’m not even worried about injury with Suh…there’s not much you can do about injuries. I’m more worried about him missing games because of being suspended. I love his tenacity, but he needs to control it and not hurt the team.

  14. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I don’t think anyone thinks Suh alone changes everything. But he upgrades the interior of the defense because of what he’s capable of.

    • Jahndoh30's avatar jahndoh says:

I also think the defense has several other good to very good players including the whole DL. Wake, Mitchell, Suh, Vernon, with lots of depth in Fede, Shelby, Jordan etc.

I think LB is a little bit of a question mark, but with that DL, every player lining up should have their game elevated. In the secondary we have 2 probowl level players (IMHO in Grimes and Jones, and some “somewhat promising” potential at the other CB slot.

In short, I never saw a player like Suh as single handedly doing it all, but players like that inarguably raise the game of the players around them, and there’s already some pretty good talent staffing those spots.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Agreed and I’m not overly concerned about adding some other additions to improve the defense. It’s not like we have no talent.

  15. Ken's avatar Ken says:

Surprised to hear Buffalo is letting Clay go visit with Cleveland without an offer being extended. That is some cause for hope.

    • dbolt48's avatar dbolt48 says:

Conflicting reports with national media saying he’s visiting the Browns while Buffalo local reporters were saying his still in Buffalo. Did you see anything definitive?

    • Jahndoh30's avatar jahndoh says:

That’s how those reports can be misleading. One day he’s shopping for houses because he’s so “confident” he’s going to be a Bill, and the next he’s heading to Cleveland without an offer sheet having been signed.

I’m not one who’s going to say Clay isn’t “worth” 9M a year, if the market bears it, then that’s what he’s worth. But…I think Clay’s knee is and should be a concern for any team that considers signing him. I do think he’s a top 5 TE in this league, and some of the best minds in football have told us he keeps them up at night with matchup concerns, but his injury history could impact this next contract somewhat.

  16. Rhino's avatar Rhino says:

Defensive strategy for last four years has been “get to Brady”… we have potent (popular blog word today) pass rushers, but Wake was still getting tons of double-teams, nullifying our “pass rush” strategy. Signing Mitchell last year, and Suh this year, is apparently the next step in freeing up Wake and Vernon (our original plan). So we essentially swapped out Starks and Odrick for Suh on the d-line with youngsters playing backup. If Earth-wake doesn’t get the sack totals now, that we’ve all expected in the past, we’ll know not to resign him when he becomes a FA. just some thoughts

  17. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    Trypod,
I simply read your posts and dumbed them down….it’s what I do. Lol

    • TryPod's avatar Try Pod says:

Dolphins aren’t done adding CBs. They are working on scheduling visit with Falcons FA CB Robert McClain, potentially this week.Five-yr. pro.

  19. Ken's avatar Ken says:

    Jahn:
Our DL is going to be the key to the entire defense. The big question and where we will hopefully see Suh’s impact is whether or not our LBs will now be able to make more plays because of Suh. I think we are going to have to go with the talent we have at LB for the most part. We may add someone else but Suh’s biggest impact should be to allow the current crop of LBs to make more plays. I suspect one of the major problems with our LBs the last couple of seasons is that our crop of DTs were not doing a good enough of job of keeping the LBs unblocked. Theorotically Suh should upgrade 2 units at once, the DL and LBs.

    • Jahndoh30's avatar jahndoh says:

I agree somewhat, but I sincerely believe the biggest impact we’re going to see is right there on the DL and it’s ability to rush the QB, which..of course, will have a trickle down effect to the rest of the defense.

    • son of a son of a shula's avatar son of a son of a shula says:

We need a full healthy year out of Misi that would be huge. McCain is liable to add a lot of pop and athleticism to the unit as well.

  20. son of a son of a shula's avatar son of a son of a shula says:

McCain, McCain, McClain, McDonald, McSuh – it’s getting confusing

  21. Randy's avatar Randy says:

I still think the overall success of this team relies much more on the offense improving than the defense doing so.

  22. Rhino's avatar Rhino says:

hey Jahn.. hope all is well in Cali.
see post above about Suh’s impact…. = pass rush (and not from Suh). Beating Brady has always been about the pass rush and neither Starks or Odrick could demand a double team like Suh. Wake will finally get one on one’s!! and even Vernon will have better opportunities cuz Suh has to be accounted for every single time the offense walks to the line of scrimmage.

That’s true Randy, the O needs to avoid the droughts it had in some portions of games and some whole games. Scoring 16-13-13 in December ain’t gonna get it done as we just saw.

  25. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    Ken,
Teams will not run inside as much on us, so the biggest area we need to see improvement is run defense on the edges. Vernon was average at best last year against the run. Wake has improved against the run, but he’s still not what I’d call a run stuffer. Probably why Shelby gets more snaps because he’s a better run defender. Our outside LBers were poor to average. So, how does Suh improve our team in those areas?

    • Al in MIA's avatar Al in MIA says:

Mitchell started getting double teamed often because Wake was easy for teams to shove around in the ground game (Vernon is decent against run but he takes bad angles at times against the run).

  27. Al in MIA's avatar Al in MIA says:

I think Mitchell stands to benefit the most from Suh’s presence. The Suh move clearly puts the scope now on Coyle’s scheme. 3 man pass rush or 4 man pass rush calls on 3rd down will define him.

  28. Randy's avatar Randy says:

How can this defense have good talent and still perform as they did down the stretch? Sooner or later you gotta consider the possibility that the talent simply isn’t that good.

    • son of a son of a shula's avatar son of a son of a shula says:

It was injuries man, we have to stay healthy. Both johnsons, francis, and almost the whole secondary was hurt. LBer’s were banged up bad too. It was a bad year for injuries.

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

I think the poor DT play was a major factor in particular as the run D. LBs were not being left unblocked. Hopefully that changes. I expect big improvement in the run D with Suh.

    • Jahndoh30's avatar jahndoh says:

Injuries and scheme which led to weardown. The scheme needed a guy like Suh to take on double teams and keep the OL off of the guys in the secondary. Over time, lacking that player proved this out. 2 consecutive years the defense was very good early, and collapsed down the stretch. You can’t tell me you don’t think Suh’s presence over an entire season isn’t going to reduce the wear and tear on the other defenders.

Suh IS the missing piece that prevents that late season weardown. Players like Wake don’t lose talent over the course of a season, but talent like his can be mitigated if he’s too worn down from taking on too many double teams over the course of a season. This isn’t about talent, I gave the names. It’s about the ability to keep that talent fresh and healthy late in a season.

  29. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    Al,
I agree that Suh is going to help Mitchell a lot. Mitchell is at his best when he’s using his quickness to beat single blocking. The great thing about Suh is that not only can he control 2 gaps…he can still make plays doing it. He’s not just a block eater. He occupies 2 or 3 blockers and still gets his tackles or sacks. I’ll be interested to see how they use him and Mitchell together.

  30. dbolt48's avatar dbolt48 says:

Results are starting to trickle in from Michigan, and the big news is Devin Funchess, the No. 1 tight end on my board, unofficially timed in the 4.5s (4.53/4.52). His fastest official 40 time at the Combine clocked 4.61.

Funchess is now catching passes from Tyler Wilson, theformer Arkansas quarterback selected in the fourth round of the 2013 draft by the Oakland Raiders.

Cornerback Raymon Taylor, who struggled with a leg injury all last season, timed 4.42 in the 40.

Linebacker Jake Ryan is standing on his Combine numbers and just doing position drills.

  31. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    son,
While it’s true that injuries happened, it’s part of the game…and you have to be able to win despite your injuries….specifically late in the season. Because, more than likely, you’re gonna have your share of injuries every year. That’s part of the reason I’ve been harping on our suspect depth for years. We had injuries, but they weren’t really to our big money defensive guys. Those guys, for the most part, played all year. Also, this late season fade has been going on for a number of years.

    • Jahndoh30's avatar jahndoh says:

Suh is the most talented DT in the game. You don’t think he’d have made a difference in either of those games? That’s the discussion here…not what happened last season, but what happens with a boy named Suh in the lineup instead.

  32. Randy's avatar Randy says:

Later guys and gals. I’m psyched to have Suh on our team. Interior pressure may be the key to us finally kicking Brady’s ass!

  33. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

The last team to win a Super Bowl with a FA signing is New England
Who signed Reavis to a 1 year deal for 12M with a 2nd year option (they elected not to exercise for 20M)

    In addition to that
New England signed there owned people to prevent them from, being FAs
Tom Brady had a 14M caop hit in 2014
Mayo had 10M cap in 2014
    Gronk had 8.5
    solder has over 7M

The Patriots spent almost all of their cap money

    Spending in the NFL wins

    need another example
Matt Flynn signed a 3 year 20M deal with the Seahawks in 2012
The Seahawks never started him elcting instead to start Russel Wilson from the get go
and winnign a super bowl in 2013
Flynn is one of the worst free agent signings in recent years
and it didn’t hurt the seahwaks one bit

Every winning league in this team spends a large portion of their cap space
every winning team in this league takes risks in signing players
There is no qay to be successful without doing that

People like to criticize spending in free agency
but every successful teams is close to their cap limit
spending int he NFL does not equal losing
    that is a myth

If the Dolphins did not sign Suh
and instead filled holes and signed Odrick, Clay and kept Gibson and Hartline the cap hit they would take would have probably been about the same
And the roster would have undoubtebly been the same as 8-8 the year before
    How is that better?

Or we could have let those guys go and signed Randall Cobb and Mike Iupati
we could have signed two others guys
    Are we better? (Piggy shrugs)

I prefer to go after a player like Suh
Either you want Suh on your team or you don’t
You werne’t going to get Suh without spending $

I’m sure people are going to respond
by saying they like Suh they just don;t like paying so much for him

    I like my paycheck
I just don’t enjoy having to work for it

but I’m a realist and I know I have to

This is what it takes in the NFL
    spending $
the idea that teams are successful without spending is simply false and unsupoported by any of the last few championship teams

You have to try to win to win
    You might try and fail
but if you don;t try you will not succeed
Is this anything different than anything we have been told since we were kids

You aren;t going to win by not spending money

If you don;t respect effort by your franchise, I don’t know what to tell you guys
    We might fail
but you better accept that failure is a possibility if you try to do anything , rather than not try at all

    2011 Cameron 6, 33, 0 tds (8 games)
    2011 Chandler 38, 389, 6 tds (14 games)

    2012 Clay 18, 212, 2 tds (14 games)
    2012 Cameron 20, 39, 1 td (14 games)
    2012 Chandler 43, 571, 6 tds (15 games)

    2013 Clay 69, 759, 6 tds (16 games)
    2013 Cameron 80, 917, 7 tds (15 games)
    2013 Chandler 53, 655 2 tds (16 games)

    2014 Clay 58, 605, 3 tds (14 games)
    2014 Cameron 24, 424, 2 tds (10 games)
    2014 Chandler 47, 497, 3 tds (16 games)

    Total Clay 161, 1809, 14 tds (58 games)
    Total Cameron 130, 1600, 10 tds (47 games)
    Total Chandler 181, 2112, 17 tds (61 games)

Cameron really had the one really big year… but in those four years has had 8 different quarterbacks. Clay has had 4 QBs, but only Tanny the last 3 years.

So how much is an extra 50 yards and 1 td per year worth? Clay has certainly been more consistently productive… but the last two years suggests a his $1.4 being bumped to maybe $2 is worth the gamble.

Chandler was getting $1.95 ($2.85 cap hit) and got CUT. Let’s just trade TE’s with Buffalo and save $5 million. 🙂

    • Jahndoh30's avatar jahndoh says:

Chandler isn’t going to get those targets here in Miami. He has had bad QBs who use him as a security blanket. He’s not even close to as talented as Clay, and I think you have to break the stats out on a per game basis (IMHO) since Clay was out early last year, and clearly not himself when he first came back into the season.

All that said, it’s an interesting comparison, and the choice to keep Clay or let him go may be made for us. There’s not much debate to be had. Nobody knows Clay’s value to the Fins better than the Fins, so if we match or decline, we’ll know what that value is.

  36. Piggy: I meant the TOP FA available — not Revis who is no longer the best CB in the league. The best player at his position – which many believe Suh is. Also, I do not think Suh is in the same league as Reggie White.

    • Jahndoh30's avatar jahndoh says:

Lots of folks do though. The fact it’s at least arguable says something about how rare it is to have a shot at a player like Suh.

All of the guys Hickey brought in to change the late season swoon with the exception of Mitchell were gone – Moreno, Delmas and of course Albert. Corner after corner went down.

    Rhino,
Cameron is a better TE IMO and has the height to finish in the end zone.
Issue is clearly injuries at this point. He’s in worse shape than Clay.
As Jahn alluded to, the Fins know Clay’s injury history better than anyone else and their decision on whatever $ amount they are currently looking to offer most likely considers this risk.

    • Rhino's avatar Rhino says:

Al, I think I concluded that I’d rather have Chandler than either Clay or Cameron. Thoughts?

      • Al in MIA's avatar Al in MIA says:

At this point? Yea but Chandler isn’t an HBACK like Clay was so having him would be more like duplicating Dion Sims. Hey, in any case, Fins need a balanced line so if there are two solid TE out there, i’m all for that. The depth at TE for Miami has kinda sucked for years. Lynch may be that 2nd guy but for now he hasn’t proven anything on a NFL field.

I said this above, but I think you have to look at targets too (thanks for the thorough research btw!). Or effectiveness per game since Clay missed considerable time last season when I think he was primed to breakout.

I also think Chandler became a security blanket in Buffalo for bad QBs who were frequently under pressure…whereas Tannehill doesn’t fit the bad QB M.O. and still manages to find his other targets despite the pressure.

But your numbers were compelling, I have to admit.

White wasn’t a high character guy; I’m sure the guys in the locker room respected his work and wanted to emulate his game but I doubt anybody would look up to him for anything else other than that.

  48. Rhino: I was just about to leave — I loveeeeee it here!! The people are incredibly friendly, I love seeing mountains every day, it has been beautiful weather as well!! We could use lot of rain as there is a serious drought but it’s been the best move! Hope all is well with you and your family!!

I don;t know what you are basing your evaulation on Suh is
But he is as good as it gets
He is on track to the HOF
Players liek that don;t hit the market often

You want a limited set of facts to meet a certain conclusion?
I don;t think that is a reasonable basis to come to a conclusion
but I will give it a shot
when did the last team win a super bowl by bringing in the top free agent available
I will go with New Orleans and Drew Brees

the Broncos brought in Manning and went to the Super Bowl

The myth that you cannot bring in free agents and succeed is a myth
    it is simply not true
and not supported by facts or logic

What difference does it make if reavis was the top free agent available or the 4th best?
If you get the 2nd best are you somehow positioned to win more than gettign the best?
The patriots paud Reavis 12M last season
They brought him in and he changed their defense
They were considering paying him 20M this season if they exercised their option

To be fair, just one season ebfore that the Bucs brought Reavis in, paid him a ton of $ and had much different results. In that case it was a trade, but that is irrelevent as far as I am concerned

If a team can bring in the best talent each offseason
and they don;t have their own guys of equal or better value to re-sign
    why shouldn’t they?

The idea that free agency doesn;t work is almost superstition level illogical

I really wish people would stop saying it
You may as well tell me if I walk on my hands I will get to work faster because plenty of people who walk on their feet have been late

Our FA moves seem to indicate that the FO thinks otherwise.
Which is why I have said multiple times it’s a legitimate question to wonder whether or not spending qb money on ANY defensive player actually leads to overall team success.

Remember I told you guys we got a new program and it SUCKS?

I just got a call from by boss, asking about payments in my close out report from 3/3. Mind you, this program does not enable the user to pull up a daily report, it doesn’t have that ability, so I have no way of knowing what customers came in that day, nothing to refer to. We send all checks, cash and credit receipts in an envelope every night. I have no records of anything here. So we figure out after going through the names on the receipts that one part of the payment was for a previous balance, and one was a deposit on a new order. The reason this happened was because it was “my fault”, because the program isn’t capable of entering a payment on an order with a balance, and now all orders must be paid in full. Do you believe this? The program isn’t set up to accept payments for a patients balance? Whoever picked this program needs to be shot and pissed on. What an embarrasment!

i dont get that. i dont see much of anyone saying he is going to bring the fins down. the worse i see is most are worried the gamble may backfire. i dont think anyone has said the fins will be losers next year cause of this.

as a matter of fact this move has been one of the very very few moves in recent years that i think as a group on here most have been in one way or another in agreement about. no one is really at anothers throat. it is about the only thing that hasnt divided this blog into two hateful opinions.

    • D's avatar D says:

Do you skip over Boulder and Gigi’s posts? Their seems pretty heavily slanted towards the Suh signing being something that will keep us mediocre. I mean they keep saying basically the Suh deal boxed us in a caorner that our draft picks have to be perfect and we cant draft perfect lol. I dunno thats how it comes off to me.

  79. D's avatar D says:

Chip Kelly wants Jordan, and to get him to part with one of the best OG’s in the game, im pretty sure we gotta wave something tantalizing in his face. (Sorry FFR, they don’t want that waved in their face, put it back in your pants). Jordan makes the most sense to me, since we, they and the whole fing world knows he wants Ducks. We couldn’t get a lot for him in trade because he hasnt shown much, but i think we could work a trade including Jordan that didnt take a high level pick or perhaps no pick at all if we included Jordan. I don’t really like the idea of trading away young talent like that, but kinda depends on how badly you want Mathis. Our need for a OG of his caliber is pretty high, which means its going to come with a pretty high cost one way or the other.
