Welcome to Miami Mr. Suh

By John D (son of a son of a shula)

Ndamukong Suh has signed his 6 year – 100 million dollar contract with the Miami Dolphins.  Now what?

Now it’s time to go to work. Time for him to get acclimated with his new surroundings, his new coaches, his new teammates, and his new fan base. This is a man who is driven to be great, while he did sign the largest contract ever for a defensive player in the NFL he won’t settle and collect his fat checks. Suh wants to be great, he puts the time in preparing himself, studying, honing, and working out doing everything you would expect from a true professional playing in the National Football League.

Now it’s time to go to work on changing the Dolphins fortunes on the field. End the late season collapse. End years of mediocrity. End years of frustration. Restore vigor and hope once again into a proud franchise. Can Suh do that? He can’t do it alone but in his presence everyone can get better, everyone can strive for more, everyone must do more.  Suh is a huge cornerstone to build on; he won’t waver, shy away, or settle he is here to lead and to win.

I first became familiar with Suh when he was playing in the 2009 Holiday Bowl. Nebraska vs Arizona. I watched in amazement at how Suh would just move his man out of the way and make a tackle. It was like he’d let them block him until he decided he wanted to make a tackle and he just threw the guy away and blew up the play. I can’t recall having seen anything like it since seeing Reggie White play ball. The only other player in my lifetime who was just as ferocious besides White was Deacon Jones. That’s elite company for Suh if you are scoring at home.

WHITE PEETE

Of course there have been many, many great defensive linemen that have played over the last fifty years. However there have only been those  three that have stood out in such a profound way to me. They all play with a meanness that frankly is scary. They all have unimaginable power, the ability to use leverage as if it was an innate sense and unbelievable quickness for men their size. Now I know Deacon Jones and Reggie White  played Defensive End and Suh plays Defensive Tackle but Suh plays every bit like Jones and White.

130604111417-deacon-jones-johnny-unitas-tim10-single-image-cut

If I were to round my top Defensive front players into a Mount Rushmore the player to add would be Mean Joe Greene. He’s tossed a few linemen around as well.

Green – White – Suh – Jones

MtRushmoreof the DL

Now that’s elite company.

For you older Dolphin fans the player most like Suh from our past would be Manny Fernandez. Fernandez was relentless, fierce and crazy. He never got the national recognition that a lot of other players around the league  did, I guess when you play on the “No-name Defense” that tends to happen. Manny played with rage and was very difficult to block he piled up tackles on that defense and was a large part of the success of the 72 and 73 Dolphins.

SBJ200209232401-01

Suh caught my attention at the 09 Holiday Bowl and although I was late to arrive I immediately knew what I was looking at. We had the 12th pick in the 2010 draft and I would blog incessantly on how we should “pay the freight” and move up to get him. I recall one blogger asking what style of D we would play since Suh is not a Nose Tackle and we were a 3-4 defense and I remember answering “whichever style Suh wants”. Of course we didn’t trade up, we traded back in fact. After 5 years of no playoffs and struggling to be a .500 team perhaps I was right those five years ago.

Alas, Suh has found his way to Miami where we can all relish and enjoy what this great player has in store for us. This is no ordinary free agent signing. We didn’t just sign an average to above average NFL player here, we got a bonafide Star and great player in Suh. Be grateful Dolphan, rejoice! And be happy.

Suh is here for You!

I guess it’s gonna take Clay re-signing with us to get everyone out of bed. LOL

  2. jetsssuck says:

hey i just remembered something from many yrs ago because of the picture of Suh looking at the 2 trophies Joe Robbie said after the 2nd championship we are going for the greatest achievement next season with the triple crown.

  3. The Flying Pig says:

    Your Picks:
Round 1 Pick 14: Kevin White, WR, West Virginia (A)
Round 2 Pick 15: Jake Fisher, OT, Oregon (A-)
Round 4 Pick 15: Stephone Anthony, ILB, Clemson (B)
Round 5 Pick 13: Senquez Golson, CB, Ole Miss (A)
Round 5 Pick 14: Tyler Varga, FB, Yale (B+)
Round 6 Pick 15: Zack Hodges, OLB, Harvard (A)

  4. steveccnv says:

No wonder why RT hasn’t been signed yet to a long term deal:
One source told Sun-Sentinel’s Dave Hyde the Dolphins are discussing a contract extension that could pay Ryan Tannehill $105 million over seven seasons.

That’s a weak offer by the team, he’ll be getting at least $18 mil per.

    • Try Pod says:

If there is any truth to this, it is likely a 5yr w/2 option years, and most of that money is paid in the first 4 or 5 yrs… It’s not as bad as it looks at first glance.

  5. Rockphin says:

Now that I have had time to think about it I don’t like our trades. What did we get for Ellerby? We still eat his dead money which is a big salary for a new guy. We traded a 3rd for Stills and GAVE them Ellerby and took the cap hit. We gave Wallace away for the swapping of our 7th for their 5th they got from Buffalo. We eat the cap hit again…..

    • jetsssuck says:

that 2nd yr of Suh’s contract scares me. I hope they plan on restructuring it. Tannebag did this to the Jets where they were in cap hell.

      • steveccnv says:

I have doubts as well, but I really don’t give a shit at this point, if we can have a great season this yr to hell with next yr, I’ll worry about that next yr.

These are thoughts after looking back at no playoffs since 2008.

    • steveccnv says:

Ellerbe was a throw in to get him off the books so to speak, and we paid nothing to get him. You can’t keep a high priced guy like that around just to save dead money.

Stills garnered a larger trade value than Wallace, because of his contract.

The trades were about the best we could do and got rid of unproductive for the money type of players, if you don’t make those moves (think Ireland) you don’t have much of a chance to be successful.

We have Michael Thomas, Schlamiel Schlamazel, and Walt Aikens. We’re set, says some people here. Not me!

  10. The Flying Pig says:

    I bet we resign Delmas

    • steveccnv says:

The Miami Herald’s Barry Jackson reports the Dolphins would like to re-sign free agent SS Louis Delmas.

Delmas played 844 snaps next to FS Reshad Jones before tearing his ACL in Week 14. He has an injury history as long as anyone in the league and will be against the clock to be ready for Week 1. But Delmas has played well when he’s been on the field. He’s not going to command much, if any, guaranteed money.

    • steveccnv says:

For the money we can’t do any better, we know he can play as our D was very good with him at S mid-season.

  11. Mike E. says:

    LOL @ TryPod

I thought Reshad Jones was a given. 🙂

  12. Try Pod says:

Uh oh.. somewhere, there is someone screaming, “This is all part of the same conspiracy, sheeple!”

  13. Mike E. says:

Great – We’ll sign Delmas, and we’ll have 2 players who won’t last the season. (Cameron and Delmas)

    • steveccnv says:

We need a quality starter at OG, WR, S and maybe LB, that doesn’t count the penciled in Taylor at CB and Turner at OG, we have 2 picks in the first 3 rds of the draft, and roughly $10 mil left (hoping Clay to take up a few of those $) to spend in FA.

Do you live in a world where there’s no salary cap Mike?

    • steveccnv says:

      At what expense Mike?

Sort of left me in the cold at WR although I oink Diggs

Anthony and Heeney playing together at LB behind Suh would be awesome

If you haven’t checked out Ben Heeney yet – you should

  15. getterdone says:

TryPod, I saw your post on Crapload Dollar wanting a fancy jet. Guess he doesn’t want to be out done by TJ Jakes and his fancy wares….lol
Those type of ministries make me sick, and there are a lot of them. I’d hate to be those fellas when they stand before God on judgement day….OUCH!

    • Try Pod says:

I think it’s a shame these people take advantage of people who are not smart enough to know what’s going on. I don’t think he’s any worse than most.

  16. jahndoh says:

    Adam Beasley @AdamHBeasley
If the Dolphins can keep Clay, they will have essentially swapped Wallace, Hartline and Gibson for Cameron, Stills and cap space.
    ————–
LOL @ Cameron, Stills and Cash. 🙂

  17. Mike E. says:

    Steve

Supposedly Gerod Holliman had a rough pro day. Maybe that drops him to the 4th RD, where he would be a great pick for us.

    • steveccnv says:

Which is fine, I’m not saying don’t draft a S, and I think we will, but you can’t expect to start a 4th or 5th rd pick day one, you have to have another alternative. If we sign Delmas on the cheap, and draft a safety late, then if he goes down we still have a chance to replace him later in the season with a rookie or Thomas and not loose too much for a few games, but if you start the rookie day one, you may be put in a hole the team can’t recover from to make the playoffs.

      • Mike E. says:

I think Holliman is a 2nd RD talent, and I think you can start him. He has great instincts and ball skills. 14 INT’s in his one year of starting at S at Louisville

  18. BoulderPhinfan says:

steve , I had DVRed the game rewind of the denver game. Actually all the games. not sure if they’re on u-tube

  19. The Flying Pig says:

    Ben Heeney

    • steveccnv says:

Looks like he has good instincts, but I can’t tell enough about someone by watching only the highlights.

      • The Flying Pig says:

Well he is a good athlete
        Performed well at the combine

He is pretty good in coverage
        Not a great pass rusher
        Very good tackler
        Leader on Kansas D
        Great lateral quickness

  20. jahndoh says:

Those of us asking for continuity wanted it in the coaching staff. We’ve changed out our OC in the last 3 years and that’s it. I got what I wanted, the FO is going all in for this staff, it IS put up or shut up time for the coaches, and being in this position is all I could ask for.

FFR got me thinking about this, and I’m going to go ahead and let myself dream about that for a minute. You should too Gigi! That would be one hell of a West-Fest!!!!!!!!!!

“well i got my tickets to santa clara and SB 50. what about you fin fans.”

As far as this FFR: “p.s. i call crashing at jahns.”
, well A) My house is 4.5 hours away from that stadium, and B) I really don’t know how I’d explain to my daughter about the strange man with cheerleaders on chains, and the strange things those cheerleaders are doing to each other. 🙂 Better check and see if Gigi has room. She’s a little closer to Santa Clara than I am.

  21. The Flying Pig says:

    On the Oink watch

    Jaelen Strong
    Stefon Diggs
    Vince Mayle
    Denzel Perryman
    Ben Heeney
    Jordan Hicks
    Ifoooooooooooooooooo

    • getterdone says:

Mayle intrigues me more than Digggs.
Heeney or Hicks could be good LB’s for us.
We lost Freeney, so why not Heeney 🙂

      • The Flying Pig says:

        I like Diggs a lot

        Mayle is bigger though

I guess it depends what we want – speed or size?

  22. getterdone says:

Drop by Miami & say hello will ya. 😉 He may be the best LG left in FA.

Free agent OG Justin Blalock left his visit with the Lions without a deal.
The visit reportedly went well, but Blalock will visit the Rams at least before making his decision. The Titans are also reportedly interested. As reliable as they come, Blalock has started all but three games during his eight-year career.

  23. The Flying Pig says:

    Suh-denly

We can draft LBs and they can hit guys behind Suh

    SUHdenly !

  24. The Flying Pig says:

You can probably play Heeney inside or outside
    Hicks too
I tend to think most of the ILBs available can play outside

    • steveccnv says:

Good thing, because with Suh occupying the OL our ILB will be most affective if he can run. I wouldn’t want one that’s built to fend off OL and can’t run.

  25. The Flying Pig says:

    We need some LBs!!!

  26. getterdone says:

Good highlights on Heeney, love his read & react….but can he shed blockers…I have a feeling he can with his size and strength.

    • dbolt48 says:

Heeney is a very good athlete….but he is not great instinctually. If you get multiple moving parts he freezes. I think it was the KSU game that exposed many of his flaws. I think athletically he can step on the field and be a top 5 special teams player day 1. The rest IMO will take years to develop. Most likely a WLB.

  27. The Flying Pig says:

I love hold my beer tweets

  28. The Flying Pig says:

    I would love 2 LBs

    A combo of

  33. Mike E. says:

Tull is a nice LB too, and D-Bolt also pointed Mike Hull, from LB U

  34. wyoming85 says:

I still think we need 2 safeties
    1 – Starter quality
    1 – Developmental back-up

  35. getterdone says:

Steve, yes I agree on a speedy coverage type LB, a sure tackler with quick read react skills, one that can get to the QB when Suh creates gaps or flushes the QB out by collapsing the pocket.
This is why it’s good we have Tripp, who could come alive this season.

  36. Mike E. says:

Maybe we could Tull and Hull. That would be confusing . . . .

I think Aikens will compete to be a starter this year.

    I think Aikens will too?
We could have 3 good Safeties?
Kraft hasn’t made that against the rules yet has He?
    😉

  38. getterdone says:

Dbolt, good video of Still’s motivation.

  39. getterdone says:

The LSU kid Kwon Alexander is really intriguing, he reminds me of Cam Chancellor, plays like a Safety @ LB. Can be a fast disruptive playmaker…that’s what we need in a 4-3 behind Suh.

Really good interview, plus how Suh played both ways in HS as a OG…and he won events in track with the Shot Put.

  41. jahndoh says:

Wyo! Love that avi! I am hoping we trade back in the first and land him, a talented young WR, and an OG with our 1st 3 picks. I think Kendricks behind Suh with Wake at DE is the best combo we will have had since Zach behind Bowens with JT at DE.

  42. jahndoh says:

Maybe we could Tull and Hull. That would be confusing . . . .

  52. The Flying Pig says:

If I had to rank our needs right now
I don’t think s would be that high

    I think, in this order
    OG1

    CB1
    WR1
    OLB1
    S1
    WR2
    RB1
    DB2
    OL2
    LB2

Just feels like OL, LB, and CB are more important than drafting a safety

I tend to think we sign Delmas
And I’m okay with an unproven like Aikens
If you think about it we already have unproven at 1 OL spot in Turner

    I’m assuming we sign Clay

We should try to sign another FA to fill one of those first 6 needs IMO
And if we can hit another weeeeeeeee

Misi and even Tripp will help us bring along LBs so we don’t have to rush them
    Same with Taylor at CB
And we aren’t dead in the water if we don’t get that extra WR

Knowledgable source tells me Dolphins have “lost patience” with and “moved on” from Charles Clay. At moment, Fins expect him to be a Bill.

  78. getterdone says:

Wyoming, if we lose Clay, I’d be on phone with Gresham & Wisniewski those two would wrap up a nice FA of guys that can start.

    • BoulderPhinfan says:

I would make sure to get at least one starting caliber guard. Sims is just fine if tanny has time to throw.

    • D says:

The fact wisniewski hasn’t been signed already is bothering me. He’s young and seemed pretty solid so its not making sense. We would be better though getting a true OG even if we had to work a trade than getting and OC and then pushing him out to OG. We still have college and connoly to consider. Neither would be great but both would be decent additions
