Mike E. – My Fan Origin

I grew up in Brooklyn New York in the 1960’s. New York City, which is comprised of the 5 boroughs of Manhattan, Bronx, Queens, Staten Island and Brooklyn, was decidedly a baseball town. The New York Yankees had a firm grip on the majority of baseball fans, but the upstart Brooklyn Dodgers won the hearts of many fans as well, especially those from the borough of Brooklyn. My dad was a huge Brooklyn Dodgers fan, but those Dodgers broke his heart, and left Brooklyn to go to California and became the Los Angeles Dodgers. The New York Mets became the “other” baseball team in NY, but my father, who hated the Yankees, as any Brooklyn Dodgers fan would,  instantly fell in love with the New York Mets. I was actually born about 5 minutes from Shea Stadium, which was in Flushing NY, in Booth Memorial Hospital in Jackson Heights Queens. The Mets of course now play in Citi Field, only a few steps from where the once beautiful Shea Stadium resided.

Shea Stadium 1962

OK, enough about baseball, and why even bring it up, right? Just to give a little background about which sport was biggest and had the city’s hearts. My dad was a NY Jets fan. He watched games, but I never felt the passion he had for the Mets when he watched football. I am, and always will be a huge Mets fan, it’s in my blood. Thankfully, I didn’t catch the Jets transfusion, my poor older sister was stricken with that.

AJ Duhe Mud Bowl Mud Bowl Dolphins

So, one day in the fall of 1972, my dad was watching a football game on our RCA 19” color TV (Which was a big TV in it’s day) in his favorite chair, and although football to me was playing in the schoolyard and knocking the stuffing out of each other, I didn’t know any players or any teams at age 9, and I certainly didn’t know any rules other than destroying the kid that had the football. I walk over and sit down in the “M” position on the floor, (which if I tried to do now, I’m pretty sure every ligament in both of my knees would explode), and started watching the TV. I see one team is wearing these green uniforms, and the other team was wearing these colorful greenish-blue and orange uniforms. Then it happened. The totally inconsequential moment that turned me into a Miami Dolphins fan. That interesting colored uniformed team scored a TD, and I didn’t know any of the players on either team, and after they scored, they kicked the extra point into this pool behind these big yellow posts, and this dolphin swims up to the football, puts it on it’s nose, and swims on it’s tail and then “throws” the football out of the pool.

Dolphin pool

I was hooked! I thought that was the coolest thing ever. I wish I could say it was a Csonka 40 yard TD run in which he maimed 5 defenders on his way to the endzone, or a Dick Anderson INT that sealed a victory, or a Manny Fernandez sack in which he tore the head of the opposing QB was the moment that made me a Dolphins fan, but it was “flipper” in his pool, doing his thing, and yes, it had nothing to do with the game at all.

That’s what started my love for the team. My best friends in my youth were all fans of teams NOT from NY. Rob was a Cowboys fan, Mitch was a Vikings fan, Randy was a Raiders fan, Scott was a Steelers fan, and that’s the way it was.

Living in Brooklyn, without the advent of DirecTV, seeing the Dolphins play on TV was rare, and it really wasn’t until the late 70’s, when I was in High School, that I really started following the Dolphins closely. This was before the divisions were realigned, and we were involved in battles for the division with the Baltimore Colts, the Bert Jones led Colts. It was 1977, the final year of the 14 game schedule, and we were tied with the Baltimore Colts at 10-4, but lost the division due to the fact that we split with the Colts, but the margin of victory for them was greater, they won 45-28, and we won 9-3, so on to the playoffs went the Baltimore Colts. They lost 37-31 in OT to the Oakland Raiders in the playoffs.

A few years later, another big moment occurred that affected my fandom. I look back on this particular moment in my life, and although I don’t believe in karma much, I think this was a karma moment. I had never before, and never since, gone to a college football game. My dad’s cousin called my dad in November of 1981, and told my dad he had tickets to see Rutgers vs Pittsburgh, for the game on Saturday of November 7th. My dad said yes, so I went with my dad and his cousin Marty to my first and only college football game. Rutgers vs Pitt. OK, I can’t fool you guys and girls, you’re too smart for that, but Dan Marino was the QB of Pitt. In that game, played at the Meadowlands in East Rutherford NJ, Dan Marino dazzled me, torching the Rutgers Scarlet Knights 47-3. I was in awe of that QB, who slung TD after TD, and it was electric. It was a bitter cold day in November, 31 degrees, winds gusting to 34 MPH. I was wearing tan corduroy pants, and my dad’s cousin got me a hot chocolate, and some dude needed to get up in our row, and accidentally bumped me, and spilled the hot chocolate on my pants, and I recall about a half an hour later there was ice in the grooves of the corduroys.

The 1983 draft came around April 26th, and yes, even back then, I was really into the draft. I didn’t study players like I do now, because the information wasn’t available, there was no internet yet, but I always watched the draft. Well, 5 QB’s were taken in that 1st RD, 4 BEFORE Dan Marino! John Elway was the #1 pick, then the KC Chiefs selected Todd Blackledge at #7. The next QB off the board was Jim Kelly to the Bills at #14, followed immediately by Tony Eason at #15. Then the 3rd AFC East team selected a QB, the New York Jets selected Ken O’Brien at #24. I’m going to be perfectly honest with you, I was not even thinking about the Dolphins getting Dan Marino. Not even when the Raiders were up at #26, and even though Jim Plunkett was their starter, I just felt that someone was going to have take Dan Marino before we did. I thought about that Rutgers game where he filled the sky with footballs and lit up the scoreboard, and just knew someone was going to pick him. When the Raiders took Center Don Mosebar, I didn’t move from my seat. I didn’t think it was actually going to happen until it finally happened, and we selected Dan Marino, QB Pittsburgh at #27. My dad was home, but not watching, and I remember running through the apartment to find him to tell him that the Dolphins got Dan Marino. I was giddy as can be, like a HS graduate who’s parents just bought him a new Corvette!

Dan Marino Rookie SI

I skipped a little bit in the history, because the Rutgers game tied so well into the ’83 draft. Let me just go back a moment to 1982. Now a full fledged Dolphins fan in NYC, I remember seeing the famous “Snowplow” game”. The Dolphins were caught in a snow covered field in which neither team could score, until that is, the Patriots drove the ball to the Miami 15 yard line, and with 4:45 remaining in the game and 4th down, Patriots head Coach Ron Meyer called time out, and went over to snowplow driver Mark Henderson to ask him to clear a path for placekicker John Smith (Sounds like a Patriot name eh?). Everyone thought that the plow was just going to go straight across the field to get a good spot and verify what yard line the ball was being kicked from, but instead of just going straight across to mark the spot, Mark Henderson (Convict Snowplow Driver) veered left to give the kicker not only a clear spot for the ball, but a clear approach path to the ball as well, and Smith promptly deposited the kick through the goalposts, a 33 YD field goal which proved to be the only score necessary to give the Patriots a 3-0 victory in a bizarre fashion, in a bizarre season, a strike shortened season where the Dolphins won the division with a 7-2 record.

My mom and my grandmother owned a travel agency from 1969-1989 in Brighton Beach Brooklyn. We had senior citizen groups that spent the entire winter in Miami in a few choice hotels that accommodated with special winter rates. My dad worked for the city of New York, practically 7 days a week, and had so much vacation time, he sometimes went to Miami for 2 weeks at a clip to check on the groups, and make sure our customers were being well taken care of.   On my winter break from school in 1983, my dad asked me if I wanted to go to FLA with him for a week. I happily accepted his offer, and off we went. Now while we were in FLA, I knew the Dolphins were going to be playing the Saturday before I had to leave, but I never for a second thought that was ever part of the plans. My dad was the greatest, he really was. I sit here with tears in my eyes as I type this, but on Saturday morning January 8th, my dad asks me during breakfast if I would like to go to the Playoff game against the Patriots. I almost jumped through the roof with excitement, but then reality set in, and I said “Dad, we don’t have tickets”. My dad said we’ll drive over to the stadium, and see if we can buy some tickets off a scalper at the stadium. We ended up getting tickets at a relatively fair price, I think $36 per ticket. We were at the top of the Orange Bowl, but dammit, we were there! It was between 70 and 77 degrees, and I’m pretty sure I watched the game wearing a t-shirt, which I took off and was waving like a towel at some point. I loved the crazy signs I saw, a lot of red circles with the slash through it over pictures of a snowplow, which was known by Dolphins fans as “The NO snowplow” game. David Woodley was almost perfect, completing 16-19 for 246 yards, and 2 TD’s, 0 INT’s. Andra Franklin ran over the Patriots for 112 yards on 26 carries, and Tony Nathan added another 71 yards on 12 carries. A thorough ass-kicking and a 28-13 victory in the Wild card round of the playoffs. This, by the way, was my very first Dolphins game, and I thank my dad with all my heart, yes, my dad the New York Jets fan, for being such a great man, and taking me to see that game.

Two other important things kept me connected to my favorite team, the Miami Dolphins, and I feel the need to pay homage to those vehicles.

Dolphins Digest Phins

I could go on forever about special moments that have perpetuated my love for the Miami Dolphins, there are so many more, but I sense some of you have fallen asleep already or have plunged your samurai swords into your midsections for an honorable death, so I’ll end this here and now, in the hopes to save some of my fellow Dolphins fans. We just got Suh dammit, and we’re on our way BACK TO THE PLAYOFFS!!! That’s right, I SAID IT!

Thanks for letting me share my story . . .

Anyone ever see this bird before? I just saw one in my backyard. If it didn’t move I would have never noticed it, as it camouflages with the leaves really well. It’s about twice the size of a dove but I noticed it had like a 4-5″ bill.

    • Mike E. says:

Do you know what it is? Looks like a long-billed sap sucker, if there’s such a thing. lol

      • Mike E. says:

I think it might be a long billed dowitcher

      • Tim Knight says:

Well done. It actually looks like a few different bird names that look alike. The notorious Snipe found in only New Zealand, the Short or Long-billed Dowitcher and the Long-billed Shore bird that really aren’t from around this part of the country.

Never saw this bird in these parts in my life. Cool sighting.

    • Tim Knight says:

I’d sign a couple of UDFAs and let them compete with Miller, Williams, Gilislee and James. I don’t view the RB position as an issue, I see it as a surge problem from the OL and overall blocking in big spots. We get some good runs in our offense, it’s when we have to run it and the defense knows it is when we tend to struggle. I think it’s about the OL, not the lack of power at RB. Sure would having a Christian Okoye make a difference, yes, but that’s not what we need and show me where we get that guy. LOL

  4. Mike E. says:

    Tim

I think he flew in from South Dakota to check out who that guy is that chopped down all those trees. lol

  5. Mike E. says:

    D-Bolt

I like the way he just rips right into gear, but he won’t seem that fast in the pros

    • dbolt48 says:

He will seem just as fast as an Arian Foster. Kid did a number on the bug schools he played…..We’ll see where he ends up, but he’s been linked to Miami since early in the process.

  6. Mike E. says:

    Tim

It would be nice to have a guy that you can count on to get some tough yards in a short yardage situation, and maybe a guy who can close out a game. I agree we won’t be drafting one early if at all.

    • Tim Knight says:

I agree, but Williams could be that guy. Maybe with a year under his belt he can sharpen his skills on where he’s suppose to be and hit it quick and decisive. The guy gives great effort every down, has proved to be tough to take down and to be a good receiver.

My criticism of him last year as a runner was I thought he ran sloppy, but not from a lack of effort and physicality.

I really want to see him in his 2nd year. I want to see Gillislee in this offense as well which we haven’t seen yet.

  7. Tim Knight says:

I see Sims’ role expanding with Clay gone. He’s going to lineup at FB and H-back to block at times but I don’t think he’ll be the same weapon Clay was as a receiver in that role. He’ll also play more in-line and then sneak out and make some plays. The guy to watch is where Cameron lines up.

To me along with Miller in the backfield with Landry and Stills, that’s our offense right now. Not sure we should think it will be less.

    • dbolt48 says:

Sims is a beast. I’m happy with how he grew as a player last year. Dudes been busting his ass all off-season. I think he knows he’s the present & future at TE.

  8. getterdone says:

    Dbolt, good stuff.
I like Thomas Rawles from C. Michigan if it weren’t for his character issues. He’d be very good as the compact short yardage guy and more for us. If he goes undrafted, he likely will, then I’d bring him to camp to compete.

    • dbolt48 says:

They brought Williams in last year, right?😀

      • getterdone says:

Yeah, Damien Williams was my UDFA crush last year….glad we brought him in and even more happy he opened some eyes. Can’t wait to see where he’s at in 2015.

    • Tim Knight says:

The only way a guy like that makes it to the game as this short yardage specialist is if he’s a STs guy. Can’t carry a guy like that for 5-6 downs. That’s why FBs are a rare breed these days. Some of them are not STs guys but really good blockers and short yardage runners. If they only play 12 snaps on offense and don’t play STs, can’t carry them.

      • getterdone says:

I said short yardage guy & more. The kid has more to his game than a couple yards here and there. He has legit speed, and pass catching ability. He could be good as a returner.

  11. Tim Knight says:

GD, you watch our offense, when would a back like that be out there? When the ZBS is working in the run game I prefer quickness over pure power. We’ll see. Maybe we do add a powerback. I think it’s overrated though. I look more to the OL and overall blocking which I believe we’ll try to upgrade.

    • getterdone says:

He ran a 4.42 & 4.5 at his pro day. He is a good one cut runner. The power back part is because he’s 5’9 217 with most of that in his legs….like a MJD if you will.

Yeah man, I was like what the fuck are you? LOL

It was during sunset so he was blending into the yard and kept his distance but was not panicked. I went and got my binoculars but he was so well camouflaged it was still hard to see him other than his bill being so long, I was like wow, never saw a bird like this around here. At first I thought it was a teen duck. But the bill was too odd.

I love stuff like this. It was fun to see a rarity.

  13. Tim Knight says:

OD, we’re finally headed for nice spring weather tomorrow around 45, then 50s, a 60+ day, some more high 40s and then 50s again. This is a nice time of year to get the gardens going again and you’re not dying of heat being outside. Before you know it it gets nicer and nicer and then you have to put the A/Cs in. I like this time of year. I’m not talking about the 29 you’re talking about, I’m done with that. LOL

  14. olddolphan says:

SAW an earlier comment which said “We all expected an extension (of Philbin’s contract). –Put me on the HELL NO side of that expectation. WHAT I HOPED FOR was that Ross would honor his demand that Philbin show an improved record to merit retainment FOR THIS SEASON!! —WHEN the Fins faded badly in December AGAIN, I fully expected Philbin’s firing. –But Ross went back on his demand and said Philbin would RETURN for this year, despite the dismal December.–Well, maybe ROSS/PHILBIN/T-BAUM will finally right the ship THIS SEASON. –But as I’ve said before, they’ve got to SHOW ME!!!

    • stangerx says:

I’m one of the ones who said I was surprised. But if it only makes Joe feel better and the downside is Ross putting some numbers on a check then I’m cool with it.

      • olddolphan says:

I’m “COOL WITH IT” ONLY if we make the playoffs and win a playoff game. 3 consecutive non-winning seasons may be fine for some around here BUT, in my view, Philbin has FAILED to live up to the high standards of this franchise’s history.

      • stangerx says:

Part of why I’m cool with it is we can still move on. And hey…..our coach for the future Joe is a good guy and a family man. Not worried about Ross’ money.

    • Tim Knight says:

It’s common practice to not have a HC on the last year of his deal. It’s a respect thing. If an owner didn’t believe in him he’d have already fired him. That’s the best way to look at it.

      • olddolphan says:

I understand what you are saying, Tim. –I just DON’T AGREE WITH IT. Philbin deserves to be fired based purely on his performance.

Tim, the two RB’s me and Dbolt were talking about are very likely to be UDFA. Did you read the posts before commenting? 😉
I’m high on Miller & Williams, but they will bring in some competition for Gillislee & James I’d think.

i get why the fins extended philbin. the players need to know he will be around whether they believe it or not. the extension has nothing to do with philbin but all to do with the players or signing new players. but hey, what the hell do i know, i still think the most important position on the team is head cheerleader.

    • stangerx says:

Nice point ffr. If anything I’m hoping it is a way to let Hickey move long-term rather than worrying about Joe’s hot seat.

OD, other than the last 2 seasons where we were staring the playoffs in the eye and didn’t get it done, Philbin took over a 7-9, 7-9 and 6-10 team – started with a rookie QB with not much college QB experience, 19 games seems to be the number, changed the philosophy and has gone 7-9, 8-8 and 8-8.

I swear sometimes that he’s viewed as a HC who’s gone between 4-12 and 6-10 and the owner is hanging onto him.

The years prior to Philbin don’t matter. Even to you as a long-time loyal fan. He’s trying to build his program. It’s his 4th season and yes at some point you have to win and that time is now. That’s the classic 4 year window. Philbin and Tannehill will both be evaluated off the 2015 season.

That’s why I think the org wants to see if Tannehill can go to a new level before paying him long-term. But if that’s the case, protect him better and give him the weapons to have a chance.

Nonsense to choose 6 out of hundreds. LOL

Larry Allen was also a 2nd rd pick, not in compensatory range which starts at the end of the 3rd round. Doh!!!

  32. Mike E. says:

We’ve been too active in FA the last 8 years, so we never get compensatory picks. Ireland loved FA, and it seems as if Tannenbaum does too.

    • Tim Knight says:

Compensatory picks don’t usually land Suh type players. 3rd and on? It’s fun to have extra picks but they’re usually mid and late round picks and not tradeable. They’re a little overrated except for mocksters. LOL

  33. Mike E. says:

If we do pick up Mathis, that really changes the needs going into the draft. Even more flexibility, which narrows down our BPA to WR, LB, and DB, either CB or S. It would be nice to be able to do that.

No they let FAs walk and don’t sign many big deals. Not a big deal. As long as Brady and Belichick are locked in Kama Sutra and can still fuck, they will be good. LOL

Their drafting has been C level at best.

I think we’re taking the same tact. You can move the ball without great WRs. You need soldiers (do your job), not Prima donnas.

  36. finfanrob says:

i sure hope upon signing suh that ross and company told him ‘if you even look at tammy’s crotch you will be suspended and we dont have to pay you’

  37. Mike E. says:

    Tim

I think we’ve been a little too active in FA for quite some time. You win by drafting well consistently, not by spending the most in FA. Regardless, we got a great player in Suh, hopefully we can build enough around him to get into the playoffs and make some noise.

  38. getterdone says:

Jahn, I mean Tim, I get your point too. I’m not a fan either of drafting a RB either now that we’re down to just 6 picks. I too think RB talent can be had with UDFA, hence Damien Williams, and others around the league before him in recent years.

No it would have to be someone they lost last year. Wilfork got cut so he didn’t leave as a FA anyway.

  44. Rockphin says:

Aren’t comp picks awarded for player lost LAST league year? (based upon who is gained or lost during the year previous league year?)

    • son of a son of a shula says:

Yes and I can’t think of who NE lost that warrants a 3rd round comp pick. Its bullshit plus they paid Revis like 14 mill to bring in.

      • Tim Knight says:

Revis’ deal would go into effect next year for comp picks with the Pats, they signed him in 2014 and lost him in 2015. Who’s the 2013 player they lost in 2014?

  45. The Flying Pig says:

The patriots lost Talib and signed Revis (to a high contract)

Why do they get a 3rd comp pick???

  46. getterdone says:

Brandon Spikes was a 2nd round pick NE lost to the Jills.

  47. getterdone says:

    Armando Salguero @ArmandoSalguero
Dolphins will likely pick up compensatory picks next yr. for losing Clay, Odrick, Wilson this yr.

  48. Tim Knight says:

Son, they’ll get a comp pick for Revis next year, be sure of it. The Pats have laid dormant in FA this year. They get nothing for Wilfork as they released him.

  49. son of a son of a shula says:

Alright have a good night. Fuck.

  50. getterdone says:

Son, don’t leave irritated. Don’t worry, Miami is going to Suh NE now!!! 😉

  51. Tim Knight says:

Dbolt, I can see us targeting your guy Hardy in the 2nd round just like Landry last year. I think we’re going OL 1st round again. Protect the QB and get the running game going. We need better talent up front.

I think the two QBs, the edge rushers and DTs will push the WR/OL debate to us.

That said, I think one of these QBs could fall like Aaron Rodgers or Brady Quinn.

    Landry
    Stills
    Cameron
    Sims
    Miller
    Williams
    Matthews
    Hardy

I think this regime is more football oriented than combine numbers.

Do your job and catch the ball. Break a tackle here and there. Run routes and catch the ball consistency is better than once every 5 times to make us all celebrate.

    • getterdone says:

Tim, I much rather have Perriman in the 2nd round than Hardy. If we go for a small receiver like Hardy in the 2nd, I rather that be Dorsett.

  52. The Flying Pig says:

Tim Revis was a free agent signing for the cheats in 2014
So he is a factor or the comp pick reward this year
    He should offset their losses

Next year he will help them gain a comp pick

But why did signing him in 2014 not hurt them in this years comp pick

What did they lose in 2014
    Talib and Spikes
WTf is with the 3rd round comp????
Especially given they signed Revis and browner to big contracts

  53. getterdone says:

The Bengals were awarded extra third- and fourth-round compensatory picks in the 2015 NFL Draft.
Cincinnati was one of the three teams, including the Patriots and Chiefs, awarded an extra third-rounder. The Bengals are never major players in free agency, and they were awarded extra picks for losing RE Michael Johnson and OT Anthony Collins last offseason. Johnson and Collins, of course, were both cut by the Bucs after one year in Tampa, and Johnson ended up back in Cincinnati. The Ravens also did well, earning an extra fourth-rounder and two fifths.

  54. Tim Knight says:

GD, everyone has their preferences. I only care about who will be productive.

    • getterdone says:

With the 14th pick in the 1st round….the Miami Dolphins select Be Productive from Fundamental Football University 🙂

  55. Tim Knight says:

When you think of our offense it starts with Tannehill and his read-option ability and short passing game. Next up is his mobility to make throws on the run. Then the standard pocket presence which people underrate about him – he will make NFL throws all over the field if given the time.

When do players make more big plays?

    • getterdone says:

Is why I keep saying build around him.
Gigi asked earlier what changes Miami back to a winning team after the 70’s, 80’s, & 90’s?
It was 13 years and 17 different QB’s after #13 retired before we finally have what could be a solid franchise QB. Now we build around #17 on the OL, @ RB, TE, & WR so he can do his best work with the skills he’s best at.

Of course he’s gonna need a good defense built around him to keep him in games as well, and to help close games when he gives us a lead!
