A Complete Homer Draft

by John D (son of a son of a shula)

In an NFL first, the Miami Dolphins have drafted their entire 2015 class from the same school. Although the Fins brass says that it “just worked out that way” they used all six of their picks on UCF Knights.  The Offense got a huge boost with a big receiver and also nice developmental receiver. The Defense was bolstered with a hard hitting Safety, a ball hawking corner and an inside linebacker who hits like a truck. Let’s examine the haul and see if holes were filled.

Breshad Perriman wowed scouts with his amazing Pro day. Enough so that the Dolphins were compelled to pick him with the 14th pick in the draft leaving DeVante Parker on the board. GM Dennis Hickey sighting physical play and pure speed as the reason for the pick. “We felt Breshad could come in and add a dynamic dimension to our Offense, a mix of physicality and a burst of pure speed”, said Hickey as he addressed the media after day one of the 2015 NFL Draft. Perriman checked in at 218 lbs, at 6’3”, was a big play receiver at UCF and is the son of former UM receiver and NFL player with the Lions Brett Perriman.

With the 47th pick in the draft the Dolphins selected a Safety, although a bit of a surprise at 47 Clayton Geathers led all DB’s at the combine in both the bench press and the vertical jump. A four year starter for the Knights Geathers was a leader on the defense that finished as the 10th rank team in the nation in 2013. Geathers 4’55 speed and hard hitting will pair well with Reshad Jones to round out the Safety position. Geathers will vie for playing time against Michael Thomas and last year’s 4th round pick Walt Aikens. The book on Geathers is summed up with this, “ Cherishes his role as a hitter”.

Without a 3rd round pick, which was used to aquire Kenny Stills, the Dolphins chose to sit still and wait until the 114th pick in the 4th round to select the next player for the secondary and third pick of the draft for the team. The Dolphins felt Jacoby Glenn wouldn’t last until the 5th round and was a player they had high marks on. Glenn entered the draft after his sophomore season and has a very high ceiling. As a redshirt sophomore in 2014, Glenn started all 13 games, recording 48 tackles and seven interceptions. He was named the American Athletic Conference‘s co-Defensive Player of the Year and was also a second team All-American. Salty cornerback who plays with passion and intensity, Glenn may struggle with the speediest of receivers but is best suited to play in a zone type of system.

Heading to round 5 of the draft the Dolphins are armed with back to back picks at 149 and 150. Having already picked 3 UCF players it would seem highly unlikely that another Knight would come off the board here let alone two more consecutively. But alas that is exactly what happened. The Dolphins found a hard hitting inside Linebacker at 149 in Terrance Plummer and followed that pick with another addition to the WR room with the selection of Rannell Hall. Plummer was the enforcer of the UCF defense, he would throttle receivers coming into his area of the field, very mobile and shows good diagnostic skills. He’ll contribute as a Special teamer while he works himself into the defensive rotation. Rannell Hall is a crafty receiver who isn’t afraid to do the dirty work, he fights for yardage over the middle and is an excellent route runner. He’ll compete with Matt Hazel for a possible roster spot but may spent his first year on the practice squad.

With the Dolphins sixth round and final pick of the draft there is absolutely no way another Knight comes off the board, who’s left there anyway is the real question.  A big ‘ol offensive lineman is left that’s who. 6’3 320lb Torrian Wilson to be exact,  a solid Guard who played on UCF’s zone blocking line for the last four years.  Wilson played Tackle for his first three years but was moved to G for his Senior year where he is best suited.  Wilson will compete with a range of other young players to try and earn a spot on the Dolphins offensive line, his experience in the blocking scheme may help him.

This draft addresses many of the needs the Fins had entering the draft now it is on George O’leary’s guys to show they have what it takes to succeed in the NFL. As Jeff Ireland once said, “if our evaluations were right then we hit a home run (something to that effect), well Ireland was completely wrong by and large when he said that the evals were horrible as Martin freaked out and Eggfooyoung washed out. Hopefully Hickey got it right with this class. So there you have it for the first time ever an NFL team has used its entire draft to select players from the same school and that honor shall belong to Central Florida’s own UCF Knights.

This is the second group I was referring to Tim. Perrimen and Dorsett absolutely destroyed the 40 in their pro days, and IMO they pushed themselves up at least another 5-10 spots because of it. They likely fo bottom 1st to early 2nd now.

Freeman is an interesting pick up
Really liked him early on w/ Tampa
He kind of fizzled out, but he becomes the most experienced QB
On the roster. Definitely a decent backup
Matt Morre who just signed a fairly friendly deal
Must really be wondering what’s up ?

  6. Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

Those first 2 picks would put him in Jeffrow status!

    LOL @ Son
    I love the fantasy draft

but i you really wanted to get a rise out of people, you should have traded Tanny for a 1st and taken another UCF prospect!

There’s none left, I would have had to trade for George O’leary himself.

Son, what a fantasy. WOW, you still smoking a cigarette? 😉
You must be a salesman, that or one helluva homer! lol

Actually I like about 3-4 of those guys, depending on who else is on the board when we select. I especially like Perriman if he’s there in the 2nd for us, or later 1st with a nice trade down. He has ‘special’ potential. Give me Perriman or DGB to be our beasty WR.

  18. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

This looks like a war between Shane Ray and Brandon Sherff

  19. getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

Falcons need a pass rusher….weren’t they among the fewest sacks by a D last year?

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

      Their entire defense was bad.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

      I think pass rusher too
Although I can see the OT argument

but I do think if they went for an OT Collins, not Scherff might be the pick bc akthough Scerf is probably a better OL, Collins might be a better LT

  20. son of a son of a shula's avatar son of a son of a shula says:

The Falcons made a huge trade to move up and get Julio Jones and ever since they did they have sucked. They need help in so many areas. I went with Scherff to add to the oline and see if that team can get back to a balanced O and run the ball. That D has holes too so it’s hard to project where they go.
This could be a spot where someone (ahem Hickey) moves up to get Cooper with White already off the board.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

They thought the Jones trade would put them over the top and they got close but then fell apart.

    • Al in MIA's avatar Al in MIA says:

Falcon’s offense is fine but their D is so bad.
You remember the GB game this year? Rodgers could have taken a 10 second power nap on the ground, gotten up to make his reads, then look at McCarthy with a “who do i throw to?” gesture then run 40 yards downfield because the DL couldn’t move dick.

  21. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Falcons will likely move Greg Robinson to LT. Scherff can play any position on the line.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

They have to protect Matt Ryan, they’re all in with him.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

They have to stop other teams even more. HC Dan Quinn is a defensive guy and I think he starts with rebuilding the defense. They have a lot of aging players on defense as well.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

their the worst defense int he NFL
Its basically an emergency to get better on D

  22. Al in MIA's avatar Al in MIA says:

    Son,

One thing about Perriman is that NFL GM/scouts love bloodlines (as if it’s some validation that the talent will work at the next level more so than from someone who doesn’t have a past connection to the NFL). I can see Perriman going in RD 1.

As for Dorsett? His height/weight combination will work against his speed values in keeping him out of RD 1. I don’t think any GM sees Dorsett as an X receiver which is most people’s idea of a #1 WR. Eartly RD 3 is where I expect him to go. The highest I can see him going is late RD 2.

For perspective, DeSean Jackson went #18 in RD 2 (49th overall) back in his draft.

    FYI
Last year the Falcons were the worst defense int he NFL (in yardage) and 27th in points

  25. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

LMAO! I guess the Falcons would have to get Greg Robinson from STL first, before they move him to LT. 😀

    It’s hard to follow all those NFC teams . . . .

    2015 NFL Offseason: Atlanta Falcons

    http://walterfootball.com/offseason2015atl.php

Team Needs: 1. Edge Rusher: The Falcons have had glaring defensive issues for a while now, and it all stems from not having a consistent pass-rusher. They just missed out on Khalil Mack last spring, but they can get an edge rusher in the upcoming draft. Re-signed Kroy Biermann; signed Adrian Clayborn and O’Brien Schofield

    2. Two Linebackers: Sean Weatherspoon, an impending free agent, has an extensive injury history. Even if he’s brought back, Atlanta will have to acquire a new inside linebacker; potentially on the second day of the draft. Paul Worrilow struggled mightily last year. Signed Brooks Reed and Justin Durant

    3. Two Safeties: The glaring need the Falcons have in their secondary is at the safety position. Dwight Lowery is a free agent, so if he’s not retained, a safety is needed next to William Moore. Another is needed for depth.

    4. Guard: The Falcons cut Justin Blalock because he wasn’t a good fit for their new blocking scheme. They’ll have to replace him.

Hmmm, I wonder if this could become a recurring problem…remember the talented Bo Jackson’s hip.

ESPN’s Josina Anderson reports Sammy Watkins underwent offseason hip surgery.
Watkins injured his hip in Week 13 and was limited in practice the following week before missing just eight snaps the rest of the season. More than likely, it was a minor scope for Watkins, but any lower-body issues for a receiver is cause for some concern. Watkins should be fine for a mostly-normal offseason program, though the Bills may hold their No. 1 receiver back a bit until training camp.
