GAME 11: NOV. 27, 1972 (Monday) – ST. LOUIS at MIAMI

The Miami Dolphins hosted the St. Louis football Cardinals on Monday Night Football the 11th week of the Perfect Season.  This franchise (now known as the Arizona Cardinals) began way back in 1899 as the Morgan Athletic Club in the rough Irish section of the south side of Chicago.  It is the oldest continuous football franchise in pro football history.

In 1920, this team, known as the Chicago Cardinals, joined the American Professional Football Association, which soon became the National Football League.  In 1925, sensational halfback Paddy Driscoll led the Cards to victory in Comiskey Park over the Pottsville Maroons in the NFL Championship 1959_Pennants_Cardinals-300x216Game.  The Chicago Cardinals were purchased in 1932 by Charles Bidwell, Sr., a wealthy Chicago businessman, for $50,000.  After 15 unremarkable seasons, Bidwell went on a spending binge acquiring Charlie Trippi, Marshall Goldberg, Elmer Angsman and rifle-armed quarterback Paul Christman.  This “million dollar backfield” got the Cardinals to the 1947 NFL Championship Game where they defeated the Eagles 28-21.  In 1948, the Cards lost a rematch in the title game 7-0 to Philadelphia.  Eventually, the Cards sank back into mediocrity.  In 1960, Bidwell moved the team to St. Louis, where they shared Busch Stadium with the St. Louis baseball Cardinals.  From 1960 through 1971 this football team continued their losing ways, failing to make the playoffs one single time.  1947 seemed like a million years ago to Cardinal fans!

The 1972 edition of the football Cardinals put together another losing season.  After starting the campaign 2-2, St. Louis went 0-5-1 in their next six games.  At 2-7-1, the red birds already had been eliminated from playoff contention. Wilson_Larry_Action-150x150 Quarterbacks Jim Hart and Gary Cuozzo combined for 10 touchdowns and 16 interceptions during the first 10 games.  Their top two running backs, Donny Anderson and Johnny Roland, averaged 3.5 and 3.9 yards per carry, respectively.  Chicago’s best known wide receiver. future broadcaster Ahmad Rashad, had 29 receptions for 500 yards and three touchdowns.  Future Hall-of-Fame tight end Jackie Smith was infrequently utilized during this season.   Future Hall-of-Fame defensive back Larry Wilson was the leader of the Cardinals defense.  Many experts consider Wilson one of the 10 best safeties to ever play the game.

This contest would represent the Miami Dolphins third appearance on Monday Night Football.  The Dolphins would go on to win their first seven appearances before finally losing a Monday Night Game in 1975.  Head coach Don Shula was concerned that his players were still caught-up in the excitement of their dramatic, heart-pounding, win over the New York Jets eight days ago.  He sensed the team lacked focus as they prepared for this nationally televised game.  The Don of Miami wasn’t about to let his team slack off.  Practices were intense, even though few thought this game would be competitive.

ABC promoted this game as a chance for many Americans to see the undefeated Dolphins for the first time.  Remember, there were only three major TV networks at this point in history.  Most games were regionally televised during the regular season, so many fans had seen very little of the Dolphins run to perfection.  “Are these Dolphins really that good?  Or are they just lucky?” asked Howard Cosell.  “We’ll know in a couple of hours” replied Dandy Don Meredith.

Wide receiver Paul Warfield was banged-up in the ferocious Jets’ game.  Shula decided to start speedy Otto Stowe in place of the all-pro wide receiver.  In the first quarter, Dick Anderson recovered a fumble at the St. Louis 29.  Earl Morrall drove the Dolphins down to the two yard line.  Jim Kiick found a narrow seam and scored, giving Miami a 7-0 lead.  A lethargic second quarter saw Jim Bakken and Garo Yepremian trade field goals for a 10-3 score at intermission.

After the obligatory halftime highlights from Sunday’s games, Cosell and his crew came back on the air.  “The Dolphins certainly didn’t blow me away with their first half performance,” said Cosell.  “Nothing that’s happened here tonight has blown me away,” said Meredith, perhaps in a veiled reference to his alledged marijuana smoking during football broadcasts.

The Dolphins would make a stronger impression in the second half.  Larry Csonka led a 69-yard Miami drive into Cardinals’ territory in the third quarter.  St. Louis moved their linebackers and a defensive back closer to the line of scrimmage.  Seeing this, Earl Morrall tossed a 37-yard bomb to Otto Stowe who easily beat his man for a touchdown!  St. Louis tried to respond.  But intense pressure by 6-foot-6 defensive end Vern Den Herder caused a wild pass that was picked-off by Lloyd Mumphord.  Mumphord returned the interception 28 yards for a touchdown and the Dolphins were in full control, leading 24-3 after three quarters.

After a short Leon Burns TD run for the Cards, Earl Morrall and Otto Stowe hooked-up for a 27-yard scoring strike midway through the final quarter.  The final score was Miami-31, St. Louis-10.  On the night, Morrall completed 12 of 19 passes for 210 yards and two touchdowns to Otto Stowe.  Larry Csonka rumbled for 114 yards on only 16 carries.  The “No Name Defense.” led by Den Herder, Anderson and Mumphord, stymied the St. Louis offense.

Next up: A date with the New England Patriots in Foxborough.   The 1972 Miami Dolphins were now 11-0.

I remember this game as one where i was excited to see their safety and QB for St.Louis. The monday night games were always exciting. The west end zone would smell of pot half way across the stadium. The NFL didn’t have professional cheerleaders as in today’s NFL. The Dolphin cheerleaders were young kids and they were located in the west end zone floor lower level. I knew one who was in my school.

Y’all sound like you did last year about Bortles the way you talk about Perriman. It’s laughable, truly is. Bortles was a legit early first rounder as is Perriman.
He didn’t run at the combine y’all, that’s why his pro day was so impactful.
Would it help if I told you UCF beat BYU last year in a nationally televised game?
UCF was the #10 rank team in the nation in ’13, after Bortles and Perriman beat Baylor in the Fiesta Bowl.

If it means anything, NFL.com has Perriman ranked 3rd, and always has, right behind Cooper #1 and White #2.

Another important tidbit – Hickey doesn’t care what everyone else thinks, he liked Ja’Wuan James, and took him in the 1st RD although everyone else thought it was a reach. I never did, and I expected that to happen. Don’t be surprised if WR is our pick, and Cooper-White-Parker are off the board that we go Perriman if Hickey likes him.

So many wants, so few picks. There are many players I’d love to have in the 2nd RD, and that’s where I figure McKinney goes. Small chance he could make the 1st RD, and also a small chance he could last until the 3rd.

  20. D's avatar D says:

If we trade up, you have to think it will be for future picks, most likely next years 1 if we are moving up to top 8-10.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I hate that. I’ve explained why. Next year Suh is about $28M, if we don’t give Tanny a new contract, his salary will be I believe $16M, plus all the other high salaries like Grimes etc… We’ll need to add talent through the draft, we won’t have the luxury of spending in FA.

      • D's avatar D says:

Not a fan of it either, but i also think impact player this year is important. If they made a trade like that, im hoping at the very least i can feel ok about it afterwards, like know we got someone who was going to really impact our team in a pivotal way. I think more likely we wont be doing any move up in the first, and i think the players we have brought in on private workouts/interviews shows we are building alternates to alternates of peopl ein the first we could take and stay put at 14 or even trade back.

  21. Al in MIA's avatar Al in MIA says:

Not sure what to think of Perriman. The doubts come from lack of volume in targets. His catching mechanics are not ideal but it works for him. I don’t have the resources to watch every route he’s run but he is the son of a former NFL player and I’m pretty sure route running is not a problem for him (his dad taught him how to play, probably was his biggest critic, and the fruit doesn’t usually fall far from the tree talent wise). NFL front offices love blood lines as if its some sort of validation that the talent will work at the next level (whether as false as it may be; that thought exists). His speed is undeniable and his concentration worked in the most critical moments of UCF comeback wins and that’s all i know.

      CNN)—[Breaking news update at 10:23 a.m. ET]

Jurors in the trial of former New England Patriots player Aaron Hernandez have found him guilty of first degree murder, which carries a penalty of life imprisonment without the possibility of parole.

    • TryPod's avatar Try Pod says:

Don’t you think we could get an impact player at #14? I do, I definitely do.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

As far as the trade back, I think it would be fine too. I’ve heard Bill Polian, Gil Brandt, Pat Kirwan all say that this class is almost completely even pick #15 through #50, or thereabouts. A trade back, IMO, would be ideal for us, if the guy we really wanted isn’t there.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

The draft is often like that. That’s probably why there are rumors of us wanting to trade up to get special. If not we probably will trade down if we can.

  25. D's avatar D says:

Anyone hear about the new cyborg roach? Its something im pretty sure they have had in government sectors for a while, but now they are promoting it as a humanitarian technology. Electric impulses are sent through the antenna of a roach from a tiny power pack attached to its back that allows for its movements to be controlled. Also in that pack is a tiny microphone, speaker, and camera allowing the “driver” to see where its going, and what you could hear from its general location. They plan on using it in the private sector to navigate rubble after earthquakes, etc, and find trapped survivors. Not trying to be all “conspiracy theory” but generally way technology works is government has things WAY before we ever see it, so i can bet the application that you see in the movie “Fifth Element” is a very likely application for them. I guess now we all have even more reason to squish those bastards than ever before.

  26. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Good. Hernandez was a lowlife thug. No, I don’t think Pouncey will say another word about Hernandez.

  27. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Mike E, I read on one of the sites that the team wants to re-sign Tannehill before the 1st game.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I did too. I think that would be best for a lot of reasons. I think he’s shown enough to be all in with him. He’s improved every year. He still needs to improve, but I think he will. Also, his salary next year is $16M if we don’t do a new contract. The biggest reason is because now, you can sign him at a “reasonable” contract. If he blows it up this year with 35 TD’s and 4500 yards, his salary goes waaaaay up.

One of the locals I worked with (age 60 when I was at AIG) worked for AT&T there for many years (his mother worked for them as well from the same area) told me that the old copper roof of the facilities in Murray Hill, NJ was sold/used in the remodeling of the statue of liberty in the 80s because it was of the same copper grade that was needed on statue of liberty for repair.

I don’t really celebrate things like that. It is what it is. Someones family was ruined (maybe several) and justice needs to be served in our nation of law & order. Hopefully the jury made the right judgement based on the evidence presented (i don’t know of what was presented; i didn’t follow the case in detail or was I present on the jury for other pertinent info).

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

The defense admitted he was at the scene (sorta had to), but claimed he didn’t know the murder was going to go down. Given that two other guys were there and no one was talking, the jury had a much finer view of reasonable doubt than the one for OJ did.

What site did they say we want Rivers? I think that’s insane.

  33. Al in MIA's avatar Al in MIA says:

Going back to yesterday’s comments, of the big upscale chain places in the US, I prefer Capital Grille over the likes of Smith & Wollensky, Ruth’s Chris, & Morton’s.

  34. D's avatar D says:

San Diego would be a fool to deal Rivers, though its probably the best time for them to do so since he is up for contract next year. Best time for them to get really good value for him, but i think they set their team back 5-10 years at very least doing so.

  35. Al in MIA's avatar Al in MIA says:

    Mike E,
Twitter was blowing up the last 2 days talking about the Chargers offering up Rivers. Apparently Rivers wants out and the Chargers want to start from scratch again with a new QB. It’s probably just BS but it’s funny none the less (water cooler talk). The Dolphins angle just comes from the ‘win now’ mentality of maybe the owner.

  36. Al in MIA's avatar Al in MIA says:

The Rivers idea comes from a 3 year win target before an eventual blow up instead of banking on incremental gains.

  37. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I doubt the Chargers and Rivers part ways when everyone knows finding a good QB is the hardest thing to do in the sport.

  38. Happy Birthday Hulk! Aaron Hernandez got what he deserved, at least he did not get away with murder the way O.J. did.

She gets to keep her 15 minutes of infamy though.

  42. D's avatar D says:

I really thought Hernandez would walk on this one but probably be convicted in the other trial. The Defense really shredded the circumstantial evidence in this case, and then the deliberation of almost 7 days would usually lead to an acquittal. Rare to see that long of a deliberation for a conviction.

They probably did him a favor. Snitches get stihes and he tried to dump blame on his banger buddy probably would have gotten him dead, and possibly still will. Id be afraid if i was his fiance/child right now. They may go after them.

  43. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

He’s a year older, but does the Hulk ever actually age?

  44. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

LOL @ Tim! I used to love saying that.

  45. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

if the Chargers do trade Rivers, they can draft his replacement at #2, and maybe get an additional pick in this draft of next years. They ain’t winning with rivers, so, it wouldn’t be crazy to do that.

    • D's avatar D says:

They cant drat a replacement for Rivers. You have 0 QB’s in this draft that replace Rivers even 5 years from now.

    • D's avatar D says:

I agree his value right now is about as high as they can expect it ever getting. Next year his contract is up and no one will try to trade for him knowing he likely wont re-sign with them anyways (He apparently is anti the LA move, so i guess a lot hinges on that). I do think though the statement about replacing him being easy isn’t accurate, i dont see a QB this year or next year that will come close to replacing him, probably ever.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Replacement as far as playing QB. Not saying anyone is going to do what he can do right now, but i don’t think SD is a contender with Rivers, or even close really, so, it makes sense to me.

      • D's avatar D says:

That may be true, but do you normally think moving either further away is a smart thing? Think of it this way, right now they may need XYZ to get a championship run established with Rivers. Now take Rivers away. You still need XYZ, and a HUGE A. To me you only make it hard to ever get yourself into championship form by doing that. It would be equvalent to saying we should have traded Marino away in early 90’s. Knowing what WE know about replacing a franchise QB, should be a prime example of why you should only do it if you dont give a hell about the next 10 years.

    ——————————–
I actually thought it was crafty to do that. Understand the lawyer didnt represent Hernandez’s buddy, and Hernandez wasnt on trial for accessory, so that basically throws a big chance at reasonable doubt in there by copping to a crime your not on trial for and sticking the actual blame for what you are on another person. If they have any doubt he actually murdered him, they couldnt convict him. Thinking that maybe someone else did, is that doubt. Obviously didnt work, but i think it was pretty crafty.

I really just like to taste the steak for what it is so that’s where the whole quality of beef & aging process comes into play. Local places at times aren’t sophisticated enough for this but none the less do cook well with what they got and are not crazy expensive. I guess now we all have even more reason to squish those bastards than ever before.

here’s something I pulled off the net concerning your daily glucose reading between A1C tests—–This can give you an idea of where you stand before taking your a1c

The American Association of Diabetes Glucose Trials has come up with a new and improved equation to relate A1c to mean glucose developed using “hundreds of thousands of readings” and CGMS data.

It is the A1C-Derived Average Glucose (ADAG) formula:

    Measured in MMOL/L: Average Glucose = 1.583 * A1c – 2.52

    Measured in mg/dl: Average Glucose = (1.583 * A1c – 2.52)*18.05

    Using this formula:
    4% = 69 mg/dl
    5% = 97 mg/dl
    6% = 126 mg/dl
    7% = 155 mg/dl
    8% = 182 mg/dl
    9% = 211 mg/dl
    10% = 239 mg/dl

In short, 1% of A1c equates to a difference in mean glucose of 29 mg/dl.

He got three nice years out of it though.

Its lucrative but i would say you would want to have at mnimum about 10grand of investment money before getting into it. Will be really slow for a long time if ya arent buying in blocks of 1000+ shares. Also you kinda have to equate it to the idea of playing nickle slots vs dollar slots. You can make a lot of money on the more expensive slots with higher level of volatility, vs going the smaller stock route and making a little losing a little so on and so forth until you slowly build up your money.

      • jetsssuck's avatar jetsssuck says:

Some days are good. Basically you have to be willing to lose 200- to gain 100. U buy stock then you set your limits of what your are willing to lose and u set you upper limit of what you want to sell at. Hopefully u bought at the low point and somepoint during the day u hope it go’s up to your sell point. I buy and try to sell stocks with a daily trading range of 10 cents and if u buy enough you can make some money. IRG is a stock I had no idea about because I just play the daily high/low values that happen all day. I have lost money also but it’s minimized with pre established sell points. That 22 cents from IRG made me 440 but I have lost just as much in single days. investments and trading are risky so I don’t suggest it to people who are not risk takers

The way I figure it 90% of the money in markets is managed by pros (who know more than me) and half of them are wrong most of the time. So I’m better off not paying them and just hitting the middle……maybe that is why I’m always a trade down fan. 🙂

I’ll give two examples of low cost, well-run and safe options. If you wanted a one stop retirement plan this would be it. 60% indexed to the S&P and 40% in good bonds.

NFL Films guru Greg Cosell said Wednesday that he’d pick Zach Mettenberger over Florida State QB Jameis Winston.
Seeing as Cosell said last week that he also prefers Winston over Oregon QB Marcus Mariota, it’s safe to say Mettenberger would be Cosell’s No. 1 quarterback if he were in this class. “Mettenberger and Winston are very, very similar in style of play,” Cosell said. “I’d argue Mettenberger is more advanced as an anticipatory thrower and has a little bit better arm.”

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

A third man has been arrested in the gang rape of a woman who passed out on a north Florida beach. The incident occurred in broad daylight last month at the peak of spring break in Panama City Beach. A woman in town for spring break was raped after blacking out behind a popular beach bar and club.

A video recording captured the assault taking place in front of hundreds of spring breakers. Sheriff Frank McKeithen called it “one of the most disgusting, repulsive, sickening things that I’ve seen.”

    ———————————–
McKinney has now interviewed with us like 4 times. Id say they are at least pretty intrigued by him. Again, maybe not most polished guy for a right now plug and play ILB, but he is someone that could start at OLB and eventually move inside i think. Cant teach his size/athleticism. He has what most the other candidates dont.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Not as interested as you are! 😉

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Isn’t he considered kind of stiff though which to me hurts him athletically. He’s big and fast but not so stop and go flexible.

      • D's avatar D says:

No, but he does play a bit upright which is bad for a taller guy as it causes them to lose leverage battles if the OL get in on their bodies. I only saw real kind of technique break downs and/or flaws when he was in the middle, so i do feel he needs some development there. Paul Dawson has similar issues and likely would have to begin a career at OLB. Dawson and McKinney pretty close on most points, with exception that McKinney is more athletic, and Dawson seems to have a little better instincts, and commits plays a little quicker.

I still like McKinney best of all the prospects because i think eventually you will get more rom him than the others, each prospect this year is kinda so so, Kendricks is best right now product, but i think he gets eaten alive by RB’s and TE’s at the next level. They are all going to need some work.

    • getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

His size & strength sticks out. A plan B in the middle if Misi gets nicked up or can’t handle the spot. Don’t forget McKinney can play the SAM too.

I would be surprised if we drafted Perriman in the first if we are thinking Mckinney ing the second; that would have us drafting two upolished guys.

  90. getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

The fact we keep looking at McKinney says the FO really wants to stop the run once and for all finally. Suh was the start of all that obviously.
He has an insane 40.5″ vertical for a 6’4 246lb man. That could result in some deflected passes as well.

    • D's avatar D says:

He has speed to run with RB’s and height to be solid defending TE’s. Id tak him in the second, start him at SAM and get him ready to take over for Misi next year.

  91. D's avatar D says:

McKinney just needs some coaching i think. I havent seen anything when i watched tapes that i didnt think was fixable, but again thats a gamble we might not be willing to take. I think McKinney has potential as a 2nd round selection for us if he makes it that far.
