GAME 15: DEC. 24, 1972 – CLEVELAND at MIAMI

THE 1972 AFC SEMI-FINALS

In 1946 a new professional football league, the All-American Football Conference, was formed.  The eight team league included the Buffalo Bills, Brooklyn Dodgers, Chicago Rockets, Los Angeles Dons, Miami Seahawks, New York Yankees, San Francisco ’49ers and the Cleveland Browns.  The Browns, who went 12-2 during the regular season, edged the New York Yankees 14-9 in the first AAFC title game.  1947 was a virtual repeat of the ’46 season.  The Browns went 12-1-1 and again defeated the football Yankees 14-3 for their Paul-Brown_display_image-300x259second straight AAFC championship.  This Cleveland franchise, owned by Arthur McBride, chose the nickname “Browns” as a tribute to their extremely popular head coach Paul Brown.  Brown, a true innovator, was, by the mid-50’s, perhaps the best known and most respected football coach on the planet.  Many long term observors of the National Football League believe Paul Brown, Don Shula, Tom Landry and Vince Lombardi represent the Mount Rushmore of NFL coaches.  In 1948 Paul Brown’s team continued to dominate the AAFC.  Cleveland won all 14 regular season games.  In the title game they crushed Buffalo 49-7.  However, the Browns received very little credit for their undefeated season because the quality of most of the teams in the league was well below NFL standards.  In 1949, the 9-1-2 Browns won their fourth straight AAFC title 21-7 over San Francisco.  The league folded after this season with the Browns, ’49ers, and the Baltimore Colts (formerly the Miami Seahawks) moving on to the NFL.  As a sidelight to Paul Brown’s career, he coached the Ohio State Buckeyes for one season in 1940.  They won college football’s national championship.  Later, after leaving the Browns, he helped form the expansion Cincinnati Bengals, serving as their head coach during the early years of that franchise.  The home stadium of the Bengals is known as Paul Brown Stadium.)

1954_nfl_champs

The Browns continued their successful ways their first year in the NFL.  Future Hall of Fame quarterback Otto Graham led the Browns to a 30-28 victory over the Los Angeles Rams in the NFL Championship Game.  Before retiring, Graham would lead the Browns to five more title games and two more NFL titles in 1954 and 1955.  When the ’55 Browns advanced to, and won, the ’55 title, it marked the tenth consecutive season the Browns had advanced to a league championship game – – – – a record that has never been approached orjim-brown1-300x263 broken!!  In 1957 the Browns drafted legendary Syracuse running back Jim Brown.  In his 9-year Hall of Fame career, Brown won the NFL rushing crown 8 times and came in second the other time to Jim Taylor.  In 1964, Brown led Cleveland to its fourth NFL title when they defeated the Colts 27-0.  That win marked the city of Cleveland’s last championship IN ANY MAJOR SPORT.  After the 1965 season, Jim Brown, at the height of his career, retired.  He signed a lucrative contract to star in the movie “The Dirty Dozen,” a war movie featuring stars like Lee Marvin, Ernest Borgnine and Charles Bronson.  Brown went on to star in many more Hollywood movies in a career he claims earned him many times his total NFL salary.

The 1972 Cleveland Browns started the season 2-3.  Then, they got red hot, winning 8 of their last 9 games.  Quarterback Mike Phipps had a solid season, displaying uspw_5781014strong leadership skills.  In 1970 the Miami Dolphins traded a first round draft pick to Cleveland for all-pro wide receiver Paul Warfield.  The Browns used that pick to draft Phipps.  Phipps’ favorite targets during the ’72 season included wide receivers Frank Pitts and Fair Hooker and tight end Milt Morin.  The offensive line was anchored by future Hall of Famer Gene Hickerson.  Future Hall of Fame running back Leroy Kelly and his running partner, Bo Scott, were a formidable duo.  On the last weekend of the regular season, Cleveland defeated the previously eliminated Jets 26-10 to clinch a wild-card playoff spot.  Most observers expected the Browns-Dolphins playoff game to be close and competitive.  IT WAS ALL OF THAT!!

80,010 fans crammed into the historic Orange Bowl for this much anticipated match-up of the two hottest teams in the National Football League.  In the first quarter Cleveland prepared to punt for the second time.  This time, Miami rushed 10 players instead of the usual 9.  Cleveland was not prepared for this change.  Charlie Babb broke through and cleanly blocked Don Cockroft’s punt!  Babb picked-up the ball at the 7 and bounced into the end zone for an early 7-0 Miami lead.  For the third consecutive series, the “No Name Defense” throttled Cleveland’s offense.  After another Cleveland punt, Miami drove from their own 16 to the Browns’ 33 yard line.  One of the biggest plays was an end-around to Paul Warfield good for a 21 yard gain.  Yepremian’s 40 yard field goal gave Miami a 10-0 lead after one quarter.

 0

The second quarter was dominated by the two defenses.  But, just before halftime, Miami mounted a drive.  Yepremian booted a chip shot field goal to make it 13-0 as the clock struck zero.  Unfortunately, Miami was flagged for a penalty which negated the field goal.  Miami had squandered 3 important points. It remained 10-0 at the half.  Cleveland roared out on the field with a show of emotion at the start of the third quarter.  A five yard bootleg run for a touchdown by Phipps narrowed the Miami lead to 10-7.  Early in the fourth quarter, Garo Yepremian converted a clutch 46 yard field goal to expand Miami’s lead to 13-7.  The Browns responded in a big way.  Phipps drove Cleveland all the way down to Miami’s 27 yard line.  Then, Phipps stepped back and found receiver Fair Hooker wide open!  Phipps’ pass was right on the money and the Dolphins were in DEEP TROUBLE trailinf 14-13 midway through the final quarter!  This Miami Dolphins team was too good to let the dream of a PERFECT SEASON die in the historic Orange Bowl.  Dolphin fans were roaring and waving their “white hankies” as the Dolphins’ offense began their drive from the 20 yard line with just 6:49 left on the clock.

Morrall, feeding off of the crowds’ emotion, threw a perfect 15 yard pass to Paul Warfield.  Mercury Morris ran twice for a total of 10 yards.  There were less than 5 minutes left on theuspw_5028720 clock!  Paul Warfield was having his best game of the season against the team that had traded him away.  Morrall decided to go to his red hot receiver.  Morrall arched a deep pass down field to Warfield who juggled the ball, then brought it in at the Cleveland Browns 20!!  The Orange Bowl exploded as Dolphin fans screamed their lungs out!  The clock was ticking.  Then, it stopped.  Fans in the lower and upper decks of the west end zone jumped up-and-down as the public address system played, and then replayed, the Miami Dolphins fight song during a Browns’ time out!  The noise was absolutely unbelievable!!  On the next play Mercury Morris ran for only 2 yards.  Then, Morrall passed to (who else?) Paul Warfield.  Warfield could not catch the ball because Browns’ ljim_kiick_1972_12_24-199x300inebacker Bill Andrews had his arms wrapped around Miami’s all-pro receiver before the pass arrived.  The interference call gave Miami a FIRST AND GOAL at the 8!!  Again, the Miami crowd went absolutely berserk!!  Some fans actually had to cover their ears as the deafening roar and the constant celebration actually caused the upper deck to sway!!  This was the historic Orange Bowl AT ITS ABSOLUTE BEST!!  Visiting teams had virtually NO CHANCE under these conditions AND THEY KNEW IT!!  The Orange Bowl was the greatest home field advantage in NFL history, especially in moments like this!!  Earlier in the game, Jim Kiick had lost the ball on a rare fumble.  Morrall knew Kiick wanted to make amends.  So, in the huddle, Morrall called Kiick’s number.  Norm Evans and Bob Kuechenberg opened up a nice hole and Kiick burst through to SCORE THE GO AHEAD TOUCHDOWN!! –The Dolphins had a 20-14 lead!  Again, the Orange Bowl exploded with an ear-splitting celebration!!

There was still time for a Browns’ miracle comeback.  With 1:15 to go, Cleveland was at the Miami 34 yard line.  Phipps spotted tight end Milt Morin down the field.  But Doug Swift stepped in front of Morin and registered the Dolphins’ FIFTH and most important interception of the game!  The “No Name Defense” had saved the day!  It was NOT a convincing win for Miami.  But the Dolphins had found a way to win.  And the 80,010 exhausted and happy fans who left the Orange Bowl that day could smile in the knowledge that “their boys” had gone 9-0 at home in 1972.  The Dolphins eventually would go on to win an NFL record 34 consecutive home games in the historic Orange Bowl by the end of the 1974 season.  It was a home field advantage unlike any other!

Next up: the Dolphins (even though they had a better record) would have to travel to Pittsburgh to play the AFC Championship Game.  The Steelers, in an incredible stroke of luck, scored with just 22 seconds left when Oakland’s defense deflected a desperate fourth down heave by Terry Bradshaw to Franco Harris who caught the ball at his shoe tops and raced for the winning touchdown on a play forever known as the “IMMACULATE RECEPTION!”

The 1972 Miami Dolphins were now 15-0.

GOTTA DISAGREE TIM. –I was in the stadium for ALL of Philbin’s 3 past seasons as head coach. –Got to see close-up the confusion on the sidelines, especially in December. –Got to see more than one player venting their disgust PUBLICLY on the sidelines, especially during the December collapses. Watched close-up as Joe called an idiotic time-out in the last moments of the Green Bay game thus giving the Packers extra time to prepare. And I saw his dumb-ass defensive allignment as Rodgers had an easy pass for the winning score.–Philbin’s not a good game coach in crunch time and I defy YOU or anyone else to prove me wrong.!!

Were even more of them complaining. Cowherd was complaining and several others. Basic jest of their complaints though was that this is a professional environment and Daddy was still at work so having his child there climbing all over things and kind of interrupting the media event was inappropriate. I had not issue with the kid being there, i wasn’t annoyed by it and it was pretty cute, but we also were not there for work the way Curry and the media peeps were.

Man you would think Tanny’s deal affected other teams more than us. So many people pipig up now about how if Tanny is worth 96 then Wilson is worth SIGNIFICANTLY more and how Luck is going to be able to buy a team with what he gets paid.

Im sorry and i might sound like a Homer for saying it, i think Tanny is very comparable to both those guys. Wilson is a winner, he has proven he can keep his team in games, he has proven that with their setup, he fits very well. He is worth getting elite QB money. Luck obviously was an instant success and he is very good QB, again worth elite QB money.

Wilson though really isnt winning those games as much as he is not losing them for them. He is not the type of QB nor do i feel he has the big play ability to bring his team back from deficits. I dont discredit what he has done, but i think doing a 1 for 1 comparison with Tanny will show you pluses and minuses that make him equal out pretty close to what Tanny is, maybe give him a bump above just because he was on a winning team.

Luck has been on a pretty talented team as well, clutch go to vet WR, burner in TY Hilton, good outlet TE whom he had familiarity in with Fleener, good but not great running game. Still he definitely is a aggressive QB who does have potential yo bring his team back, will them to win so to speak. His accuracy isnt as good as Tanny’s he’s not as athletic, but overall probably even more so than Wilson needs to be a bump or two ahead of Tanny in pay.

These other place are making it out as if Tanny is a bum off the streets who has been grossly overpaid when he has shown every trait you want to see in a franchise guy. They are basing it solely off the W-L which isnt completely his fault much as the W-L for the other two isnt fully due to their ability either.

    • BoulderPhinfan's avatar BoulderPhinfan says:

do you think we would have been a playoff team last year with Luck instead of tanny?

      • D's avatar D says:

        No i dont.

      • D's avatar D says:

I dont but i do think he is a slightly better QB as of now than Tanny. He’s more refined. Wilson i dont think though is better and believe our team with Wilson last year possibly worse.

GetterDone walks in and throws gasoline on the fire……

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell stated Wednesday that he is open to hearing any “new information” Tom Brady can offer in connection with his Deflategate suspension, prior to Brady’s appeal.
NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport came away believing the “door seems very open” to a reduction of Brady’s four-game ban.

    • Jahndoh30's avatar Jahndoh30 says:

I heard the actual interview live and I came away with: The commissioner stated fact. If there’s anything Brady can bring to light that he hasn’t considered, the appeal is the time to do that. Goodells job is to listen. He basically intimated that he would love Brady to supply the evidence that he claims exonerates him that he failed to supply to Wells.

Not sure which fire you think you threw gasoline on though….Rappaport is trying to play the public. This story is running out of legs and he wants to milk a bit further.

Also, for the record. I don’t even care anymore if he lowers the suspension. I’m just tired of hearing about it and we don’t play them til well after week 8 anyway.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I think any new information would justify the suspension and would only prove it should have been a longer suspension. What could Brady do now to make it less? I don’t get it.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

I took at as “Tom…..you can prove your case then do it, cause sure as shit you are getting suspended just for not handing over your stuff. Your move.”

The bottom line is I don’t care about Brady or the Pats as far as the season goes. I’m focused on seeing our team improve. We’ve proven we can beat them so it’s up to us to get to the next level regardless of what they do.

    • getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

We need to sweep them or at the very least sweep other teams in the division!
Also become a dominant home team that is feared for traveling opponents.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

That’s part of getting to the next level. If you become an 11-5 or 12-4 team you’re likely not losing many division games.

    REply

C’mon man….coaching still plays a very big part! Remember all the teams over the years like the Redskins or our Phins that bought up a lot of big name FA’s or just had a lot of talent and fell woefully short?

      2010 7-9 (Sparano)
      2011 6-10 (Sparano/Bowles)
      2012 7-9 (Philbin’s 1st season as a rookie HC)
      2013 8-8
      2014 8-8

Why not look at it in a positive light? Philbin got more out of a poorly built team by Ireland. At least that’s what I’ve heard. LOL

A bit sleepy this morning after the Lightning’s 6-5 overtime win over the New York Rangers. –IT WAS A CLASSIC!! – – This town has gone hockey crazy!!!!! – – Many Ranger fans at the game were deemed a “bit too over enthusiastic” and were escorted into paddy wagons by some of Tampa Bay’s finest last night. – -WHO’D EVER BELIEVE that New York fans could get out of line???
    ————-
In just a few years, Lightning GM and former hockey great Steve Yzerman has rebuilt this team from a cellar-dweller to one of the very best franchises in the NHL. His selection of Jon Cooper, a relative unknown, to be his head coach, was a master stroke of genius. Cooper didn’t need 3 or 4 years to turn around this dead franchise (sound familiar, Dolphin fans?). –In the last two seasons, the Yzerman/Cooper team has turned the Lightning into a TRUE TITLE CONTENDER!!
    ————
Meanwhile, my old school, FAU, won their 39th game of this college baseball season, beating Old Dominion 6-4 in the Conference USA tournament. – – It was a sensational sports evening for your’s truly. –NOW if I can just get 8 hours sleep tonight!!

PS:–This is Cooper’s 2nd full season as head coach of the Lightning. –You may recall that Don Shula took a moribund Dolphin franchise to the Super Bowl in his 2nd season.–NEVER BELIEVED you had to be head coach of a team for 4 full seasons before you can reasonably expect a title contender. PHILBIN has failed to produce a winner in 3 full seasons as head coach. He won’t bring us a title this year, either.

I went to DR with the family a couple years ago, Punta Cana. It’s a nice All-inclusive (which IIRC is mostly all that’s available) with 4-5 pools lots of great beachfront, casino, clubs…etc…(Hard Rock)

We also took tours into the surrounding area including the city nearby (can’t remember the name) which was void of white people, but very authentic and cool. Little English spoken outside the resorts, so knowing some Spanish helped. In short, We took my daughter who as 8 and our nephew who was 2, and I never felt even a little unsafe.

I’ve also been to Grand Cayman (it’s ok, the stingray city was really cool). I went to Barbados once on a surf trip in college. It’s very authentic. I loved it, might be a bit more rustic than some other Caribbean destinations if it’s like it was.

Sorry for the late reply. I have not really done the islands that much but I did take the family to St. Lucia last summer and stayed at an all inclusive called Coconut bay. We had a great time. The island is beautiful. We picked it as a destination because it’s topography is so much like Hawaii. There are rain forests, volcanoes and beaches. The all inclusive we stayed at was great but the beach is on the Atlantic ocean side so it was a little rough with the surf and there was a fair amount of sea weed that washed ashore. I understand the resorts on the Carribean sea side have much more pristine beaches. But other than that I really enjoyed the all inclusive. It was a great experience and a beautiful island.

I guess it’s about whether you’re willing to incur a little risk to your safety in exchange for an adventure.

Maybe regular trips into baja for surf since I was old enough to drive is part of the reason I have this perspective.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I think escalations in crime is the issue, not that’s it’s always been bad.

      • Jahndoh30's avatar Jahndoh30 says:

More people=more crime. It’s crime rate that delineates the real danger, not reports. “Escalation” is a vague term. I wouldn’t go into some of those Texas/Mexico border town where there are mass graves being found either. But some of the fear you’re talking about like in the Carribean..is mostly unfounded. Millions and millons of Americans enjoy vacations there without being crime victims, and some of them come home and get mugged.

Cartels have been a problem in mexico for my whole life. There were definitely times I went there where it was more risky than others, but in the end, here I am. I don’t buy that line about the world devolving into mayhem. I don’t think todays times are any more fraught with danger than when people were building bunkers in the 50 either, I just think the danger gets sensationalized and fear mongering is more prevalent.

In the end, I just don’t want to life of fear. I’d rather take a few risks and live the full life I’ve had with the rich experiences I’ve had than know that I’m 100% safe and snug at night. We’re all wired differently. I’m getting the fuck out there though!

None of this is to say I don’t have a level of unsafe activity that wouldn’t dissuade me…but I draw the line somewhere between the US VI and ISIS territory I guess.

  80. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Jahn, all good points. But I think some of the reports are based on an increase in crime as opposed to occasional crimes. I read something about the drug cartels in Mexico purposely fucking with the tourist trade in a battle with authorities. They’re terrorizing towns and along the way tourists. I’m just reporting what I heard. I’ve been to Mexico once and while traveling to the hotel on a shuttle bus, I have to say it wasn’t a great feeling to see the police driving around with a .50 caliber machine gun mounted on the truck and the police all with uzis.

    • Jahndoh30's avatar Jahndoh30 says:

Agreed, but since I’ve been seeing that for 30 years I guess I’ve just reconciled that that’s how the authorities in that country arm themselves. I’m sure there’s some veracity to the reports you’re reading too, and I can’t deny that, but I do tend to believe that the biggest difference between now and the past is the widespread sensationalizing of the crime moreso than the actual crime rate.

Ejido Erendira is the one that comes to mind. Are you thinking Santo Thomas? I’ve been there too, it’s a little north of Puntas Cabras. A fishing village with a campground right at the beach there. We once traded 1 beer for 1 lobster there years ago when it was election weekend and the country was dry to avoid rioting. LOL…

San Vincente is on the Highway 1 just south of the turnoff for Erendira/Puntas Cabras…maybe that’s what you’re thinking?

Lol…try putting yourself through school lifeguarding and teaching swim lessons. You learn early on how much Chlorine is your friend.

Also, pee is sterile. One of your NLC’s said that’s what you tell them….

Sounds like AJ Francis is cool with Suh training on his own.

I served on the USS john F.Kennedy before it was decommissioned-it was powered by fuel. This new one is nuclear. The wife would like to go to the Christianizing of the carrier.
