MILLIONS OF EYES will be watching game 3 of the Stanley Cup Finals tonight in Chicago at 8 PM eastern time. The big question is “WHO will be in goal for the Lightning??” –Injured starter Ben Bishop had to leave in the 3rd period of Tampa Bay’s 4-3 win over Chicago Saturday Night. –The exact nature of his injury is a tightly kept secret by head coach Jon Cooper. Meanwhile, 20-year old back up goalie Andrei Vasilevskiy will be ready to go if Bishop has to remain on the sidelines tonight. Clearly, the unsettled nature of Tampa Bay’s goaltending situation is a big plus for the home town Black Hawks. But, I believe there’s just as much pressure on Chicago as there is on Tampa Bay. The Hawks are SUPPOSED to win this game. They’ve got one of the biggest home-ice advantages in the entire NHL. A loss tonight to a back up goalie would be devastating to this heavily favored Chicago team. All the plots and subplots will be carefully analyzed by the pregame crew on NBC Sports Network (Channel 220 on Directv). And the best in the business, Mike (“Doc”) Emrick will have the call. (Emrick, a former college professor, has a real doctorate from Bowling Green University in Ohio. According to Field Yates: “No team has more money committed to its 2016 salary cap than the Dolphins, who have already tallied up to roughly $160 million for next season. That excludes a contract for defensive end Olivier Vernon, a rising star on their defense.”
Hope they have this team set up well, cause sounds like there won’t be big ticket FAs for a while.
Nor should we have to. Gotta start hitting on special talent in the draft. The signing of Suh was a rare opportunity because players like him don’t usually hit the open market. Other than him we didn’t really sign any other big ticket FAs specifically no longer than 2 year deals.
Hoping we don’t but you never know what might happen. Two years ago we would have been counting on Wallace and Jordan as key and special contributors for this season. Hoping we get less surprises like those and more like Landry.
With the salary cap for rookies agreement I believe all the teams are gonna push high priced veterans out the door sooner and pay the real veteran superstars through FA. The NFL player average concerning playing years is less than 4 which amounts to the first rookie contract. What franchises do to gain a competitive advantage considering their is a minimum owners have to speed should be interesting.

Teams are trying to save money, but the superstars will get paid. IF anything there is more money to spend on them with the cheap rookie contracts. Think the middle of the road vets have the most to worry about from cheap rookie comp.
Pushing the high priced vets out the door is why they’re trying to lower the vet min, it will at least give these guys a shot.
We cleared out a lot of high-priced players we signed in 2013, signed Suh, re-signed our own in Pouncey and Tannehill and were very deliberate in the length of contract in FA with other players.

Yes it was also during a massive heat wave and polio epidemic. Because of that more people than usual were going to the Jersey beaches.
I believe it was modeled on the story of shark attacks on the Jersey Shore in the early 1900’s but they chose to set it on an island for the isolation effect. Something like Martha’s Vineyard or Nantucket.
Stanger, yes 1916 and yes the movie was shot on Martha’s Vineyard in Massachusetts. The great whites that swim up the Jersey coasts usually end up off the coast of MA where there are large seal populations.
But even if they shot it there, I have the t-shirt from a trip to where it actually happened.

People want to see big names at big name times, FA, Draft, etc, but truthfully the less expectations you have during those times the better the team is overall. Given we find some success this year i could see our biggest need to be down to continuing to strengthen the OL and potentially replacing needing a stud DE. We wont really need to have a splash FA signing, as boring as that might be, and probably only have one strong need in draft, meaning we might be prime for trade up to get that guy. I could easily see us parting with a 2nd maybe even a 2nd and 3rd as long as things go well with the people we picked up this year.
With the young group of CB’s and showing the promise they do so far, even if we lost Grimes next year i think we have someone out of that group who may really step up and give us confidence we will be able to move on. That also helps us with that cap number as Grimes counts 9.5 against that number, 6.5 of which we could get back.
Cameron Wake is in the same boat with just a little less reason to replace him as we may also lose Vernon next year. Wake carries a 9.8 mil cap hit with almost all of that (8.4) reclaimable if cut. If we lose both Vernon and Wake last year i think we would need to land a stud DE and probably double up at the position with a guy we select in a later round. If Wake really balls this year next to Suh, they might keep him let OV go and draft a guy, but wouldnt be as necessary to trade up as i suggested above. A lot depends on how well Wake does this year and how healthy he remains through the season.
Pretty sure Jordan is cut or traded so we will be off the hook for his salary, or a good portion of it next year so we will save a little there. Mitchell and Misi are both potential cuts, as they both save us in the ranges of 2.5-3.5mil, though i think as long as they stay healthy and are prodctive they will be guys we try to keep.
Jones isnt someone i think we can afford to cut, and i think his performance this year will keep him here, but given his salary and how much we save by cutting him, i think he is also on the radar as a potential cut for 2016.
Some of these are no-brainers, just due to age and relative cost vs cap savings, but good news is, we are just now looking like we might could manage some of these losses if they were to happen and in previous year losing most of these guys would have been a real detriment to our team. Hate to say it but i think we lost at least one fan favorite from our team next year as a cap causality.

I dont see us keeping both OV and Wake, and i think how well Wake does goes a long way to which, or if its either for that matter. Wake is my prefernce to keep and i think he balls this year next to Suh which i think will lock him in to that spot. I am not sure if Grimes stays, these young guys are nipping at his heels. His game is based of his quickness and he’s probably going to be losing a step or two over the next couple of years.
We’ll find out, but if they both show it this year see no reason not to keep both. As with all such future discussions will depend mostly on both can get on the open market after we see how they do this season. I got faith in Grimes though.

I agree with D that continuing to fortify the OL and adding a top DE could be two main areas we target next offseason. It’s too early for me to speculate cuts etc. but there will be some more change that’s for sure.

Perkins also isn’t a personnel guy and still has a lot to learn about this game based on what he says.
I like Perkins, but I don’t put much stock in his opinion of talent.
Just a reminder, these OTAs are learning camps, not real competitive camps. It doesn’t equate to actual football games which it sometimes gets reported as.
Yeah — hard to judge too much in the trenches when the pads aren’t on. Mostly who does not get confused and how the footwork is.
One guy is going through the motions in the heat and the other is trying to impress.

I thinks it completely ridiculous that a WR can’t dunk the ball over the goalpost after a TD. No Fun League
Not a big deal to me either, unless they hang on the goal post and possible shift it from being true. Could cause a FG miss and that would not be fair, owever in some ways i kinda like the rule because it keeps them from twisting an ankle or something doing something unimportant.

I don’t. You get a guy hanging on the goalpost and it tweaks it, then the game is delayed, or goes unnoticed and a kick is made/missed, because of it. Guys like Ochostinko ruined it for the fans.
I think they outlawed it because the goal posts got fucked up a few times and it delayed the game.

MikeE—-I was just reading a email about the gators woman’s softball team and they showed highlights of the national championship. I thought of a question of how they pitch differently than men and how do you pitch. Do you have the wild wind up like the women’s or do you just get to the pitch without the wild windups? I’m sure the wildups are hard to practice and takes a lot of practice…..especially if you are throwing change ups, curves and fastballs.

I remember a couple of friends and I were sitting in the left field upper deck inside the foul pole at Shea when Edgardo Alfonzo hit a shot that looked like it was coming right at us and we all sensed it. But you know how the ball curves so it didn’t end up by us but it was a HR so that was good. That’s the closest I ever felt other than a foul falling not too far behind or in front but you knew it wasn’t close enough.
I had one when I was a kid that went into the deck above us. Apparently it hit someone’s hand up there and fell back down. Landed right on the arm rest btwn me and my dad…..dude behind us reached in and grabbed it on the short bounce.
I’ve gotten 5, 3 from MLB and 2 from minor league games, but never had one caught or even picked up before it stopped.
You are five up on me. Still waiting.

I want them all lined up in every different spot. I hate the idea of static locations and the X Y Z receiver lavbels. Better we are at putting every receiver i every different spot the harder we are to defend.
Agreed. On every snap the secondary doesn’t know who’s lining up where. Let them stay put and take their chances or scramble around looking for their preferred matchup.
I agree, but I was talking about his usual position, where he’ll be lined up the most. We come out of the huddle in a 4 WR set, they line up, then all 4 shift to a different spot… And Philbin would run the ball 😉
Ive had a couple hit near me, once when it was a HR ball, hit by David Justice. It landed a couple rows in front of me. Second one was a foul ball over near the dugout, which i was not too far behind, it bounced off the top of the dugout into the stands a few rows in and to the right of me. Dont remember who hit that one.
I had one in 3 Rivers, I was sitting in the front row down the first base line, I stuck my foot out and slowed it down, the guy a few seats over got it, if I hadn’t touched it, it would’ve gone back on the field.
I pitch differently than the girls. No windmill in my league, but they do allow slingshot pitchers, but I never pitched that way. I’ve always played in modified fast pitch, which means the pitchers windup at no time can go above the plane of his shoulder.
This is the slingshot method, which I never learned, because it was illegal due to the arm going above the plane of the shoulder

### Other notable practice stuff: Greg Jennings had several catches against Brent Grimes and others. Jennings still has a knack for getting open… Matt Hazel dropped at least two passes but also had a touchdown catch in red zone drills….
I don’t know….Maybe Grimes has lost a step? I keep hearing how everyone is doing good against him…. (JK/BB)
When you think about it they’re both contemporaries – both turn 32 this year, Grimes in July and Jennings in September.

It’s really hard to tell, because you can’t see the ball being thrown. We always hear about these great one handed catches, but unless you see how hard the ball was thrown… These guys practice one handed catches, with those big mitts most WRs have, and they’ll be the first to tell you it’s really not that big of a deal, but to us it still looks unbelievable.

Loved when Tanny said in his interview today after practice that the skill position weapons now are the best he’s seen since he got to Miami. Says he’s very excited at the possibilities!!!
He does sound excited, he sounds loose too maybe he’s ready to play with a lot less thinking now. Just ball, every throw doesn’t have to be perfect just give your guy a chance he’s hungry too and he’ll go get it.
That was a great catch by Landry but look how bad the throw was but so what his guy made a play.
Brady uses illegal screens, and a lot of change of pace to get open receivers, we’d get called for PI, if we used half as much of it as they do, so the next best thing is to get receivers that fit your system. What a concept, wonder why we never thought of it before, SMFH (Ireland).

It’s mostly been Turner they’ve been rotating Brenner in some. Douglas is taking 1st team reps at LG too
Yeah, I saw where Douglas got some run @ 1st team LG. Seems to be impressing Philbin with his natural instinct to pick it up.
It’s OTAs lots of guys getting a chance, Brenner, unless he’s improved sucks.
Landry can make catches like that because he has 11 inch hands.
Son, Tanny said earlier in May that now entering the 2nd year with Lazor’s offense he feels very natural, everything is flowing for him now.
He should be in command now as a franchise QB should.
He needs to help that line and they need to help him cut the sacks in half.
Did anyone ask him about his pocket presence, to me that’s all he really needs to fix, to take it to the next level. He gets happy feet sometimes when the protection is great, and runs right into a defender, or just falls down for them.
That’s the stuff that kills me, you’re right its the key area to improvement. Maybe with these receivers he’ll be more apt to just chuck it up for his guy. Hartline or Parker hmmm that’s a tough one – NOT!
Son, the ceiling thing with Tanny is because he didn’t play a ton at QB in college and had to learn on the fly in the NFL. He had a good season last year, it’s his 4th season, he just got paid, now it’s go time. For me his learning curve is over. Now it’s about how high he can go. That’s what we find out next.
It needs to be, this is a playoff team and its on Ryan just as much as it is Philbin. They’re tied together and had three years to grow together we need to see the fruits of their labor. Sweep the patsies.

It’s OTAs, there are no depth charts set in stone outside of a handful of players. So guys playing with the 1st team doesn’t mean much at this time. We see this every year. It’s about guys getting reps with different personnel groupings. Philbin says every year don’t read anything into it.
What I want from Tannehill this year is becoming so aware when he comes up to the LOS that he can gaze over the D and sense things and give a nod or a codeword or hand sign to a WR who will know that that means he does a certain thing they’ve agreed on to take advantage such as if they notice the safety creeping up to blitz or a little confusion in the deep secondary or a new guy just in for an injured starter … all that stuff that Rodgers and Manning and the guys do to make the D pay for being sloppy or asleep.

Plus I would like to see Tanny use the QB sneak for the 1st down or TD sometimes. Even the QB draw or delayed draw when the MLB vacates his zone, even if it is for 6 yds that is something else for the D to worry about.
The option read is something else for the D to worry about. He killed defenses with it last year and he runs it deceptively well.
Son, there are no great catches on great throws, those are suppose to be easy. Tough catches are when the throw isn’t exactly where it needs to be.
That’s the thing, until Landry got here that’s a pick. You think Wallace is even trying a one hand catch behind his back? Hartline watches it wizz into the DB’s arms.
Ryan has guys he can trust now it should lead to less sacks and more big plays.
I don’t agree with that Tim. Why can’t a QB make a great throw into a tight window, the only place it can be caught, then the receiver reaches back and makes a great catch? We saw it in the SB with Eli late in the game to beat the cheats.
Wasn’t the 49ers “the catch” a great leaping catch and a great throw placed perfectly out of reach of the defenders?

But sometimes the only place to put the ball where no DB can get it is a slightly to very funky place for the WR. The QB has to depend on the WR to go get at least most of those oddly placed balls. I always thought that was a little credited talent of Charles Clay, although it might have seemed he was good at it compared to Mike Wallace who pouted if the ball did not land in both hands, even when he sometimes caught a few of those.
Tim I like Tannehill on the option, the traditional rollout, and the sprint to the corner runs, sure and he is fast and a big guy at 230 for DBs to deal with coming at them full speed.
But I’d like him to steal some more yds just by noting that for example the MLB followed Miller (or Ajayi) and has his back turned. The RB should be aware that Tannehill has pulled it down, and he should act the decoy and sell out the sham to the LB, so he doesn’t fall off coverage and hold Ryan to no gain.
That’s kind of how they run it. That option read all depends on the DE or OLB (the guy on the edge). If Tanny sees him pinch inside on the hand-off to the RB. Tanny pulls is back and runs it outside of him. If he holds his ground outside, Tanny hands it off on the inside running play.
The things i am asking Tannehill to do this year can be the product of what he calls being comfortable in the offense. Now that this is the second year of Lazor and his 4th yr in the league, he should be able to add little nuances to his game which are the things people refer to when they begin to call a guy elite.
Yessss, he’s now got the timing, speed of the game down, his mechanics, drops, set ups, vision & ability to read defenses.
Now is the time to be more aggressive in his reads & his decoys, fakes, the little things in him taking ‘His’ game to the other team instead of just taking what they’re giving him.

slightly different topic here, but you can really tell when a pundit is merely parroting what he’s heard and doesn’t really know anything. I read a guy who said Stills was ok as a replacement for Wallace since Tannehill lacked the arm strength for the deep ball.
Correct me if I’m wrong guys, but it is not arm strength that is the problem, is it? It’s not even accuracy per se, as Tannehill had one of the best completion percentages in Dolphins history.

Was timing…Tanny has a big gun, can hurl it 50+.
Wallace was poor tracking the ball and also ran off his route too much, inconsistent speed, changed his angles after the ball left Tanny’s hands…not good chemistry.

yes sir on the option read, you have explained it perfectly and Tannehill is good at it, and I do not want to give up on that, but I am talking about something different.
I am talking about using Tannehill’s running talent and speed as a sack avoidance weapon and as a spot-read-and-break-the-play scramble, not a designed read option.
Besides, I don’t want Ryan gettin hurt, so I do not really want a “running QB” in the Michael Vick sense.
But a lot of the time Vick and others run when they’re trying to do sack avoidance as you mentioned or they see receivers covered but open running lanes.
…but yes, I’d like to see more QB draws, sneaks, bootlegs from goal line situations when the defense over shifts or too many drop into coverage and he sees a lane/crease.

We’ve seen Tannehill do everything well at times. To me he needs to increase his play speed – feet, setup, release or run. He has all the physical ability and toughness you can ask for. Now he has to put it altogether and that usually comes with experience and confidence in himself and everyone around him. We’ll see if he can do.
One thing I don’t want him to do is bail early and take off before allowing the routes to develop. He’s stood tall in the pocket since he’s been here, yet he gets criticized sometimes for it. But I’ll take that over the QBs who bail early and are out of the league early.
Anyone think when Tannehill says this is the most athletic group he’s seen at WR, he’s kind of firing back at the WR group who didn’t pay attention in meetings, didn’t prepare well and ran sloppy routes without naming names?
There’s a reason Landry became the focus and all the other guys were jettisoned. Work ethic and knowing what you’re doing is more important than speed etc.
Anyone ever see Wallace dive for a ball outside of that great catch he made at the end of the half in the 2nd Pats game by the pilon? I remember him throwing his arms up at passes in his vicinity but they weren’t perfect for Mr. Special so he bailed. Then he quit. Good riddance!

Free agent RB Daniel Thomas will work out for the Lions on Tuesday.
He’ll join Ben Tate and a number of other veterans. Like many players on the street this time of year, Thomas doesn’t have much game. He’s averaged 3.6 YPC for his career and is terrible near the goal line despite his 6’1/235 size.

You know what I mean. A great throw shouldn’t have to be a great catch. Not talking about throwing to the only spot and the receiver going to get it. That’s how good teams win. But that’s not part of the plan.
I don’t know what you mean, you’re talking like there’s no one else on the field but the QB and the WR, that’s the only time your logic applies, or if the receiver is wide open, otherwise there’s lots of factors to consider.
