#53 WLB Jelani Jenkins 6’0” 243
Jelani Jenkins was drafted in the 4th RD (pick #104) of the 2013 NFL Draft. In 2013, Jenkins played ST’s and made 15 tackles. In 2014, due mostly to injuries to the Dolphins LB corps, Jenkins got a shot to play, and made the most of it. Jenkins played 15 games in ’14 starting 14 of them. He finished the season with 139 tackles (83 solo), 3.5 sacks, 1 pass defensed and 2 FF’s. It was a pretty successful season for the 2nd year player, and undoubtedly, the Dolphins are hoping for more from Jenkins.
Jenkins is penciled in as the starter on the weak side, and I don’t see any reason why that would change. He’s shown the ability to handle the position, and was a sure tackler in a unit that didn’t tackle well. He has good coverage skills, and the Dolphins will need him to step up and do more this season to get this team into the playoffs.

#55 MLB Koa Misi 6’3” 244
Koa Misi was drafted by the Miami Dolphins in the 2010 NFL draft out of Utah, in the 2nd RD, pick #40. Misi played mostly DE in Utah, but the Dolphins wanted to try Misi at LB. In 2010, the Dolphins were running the 3-4 defense, so Misi was obviously too small to play DE, and that was left for the big boys Kendall Langford and Randy Starks. Misi was a little heavier coming out of college, between 255-260. He’s shed some weight to get some quickness to better the play LB in a 4-3, where more speed is required. Back to ’10, Misi played SOLB in 16 games, starting 11. Misi tallied 41 tackles (29 solo), 4.5 sacks, 2 passes defensed, and 2 FR’s, (1 for a TD).
In 2014, the Misi at MLB experiment began. Due to injury to Dannell Ellerbe, Misi seemed like the best man for the spot. Misi played in 11 games and started all of them. He finished with 66 tackles (50 solo), 1 sack, 2 passes defensed, and 1 FR. Injuries hampered Misi all season long, as his entire career has gone. Fair or not, it’s tough to count on Misi for an entire season. Misi did however, bring solid tackling skills to the LB corps, and was one of the guys that when he hit the ballcarrier, they went down.
Health is the key for Misi. He has the size and the ability to play MLB, and he may actually get some competition from Kelvin Sheppard once the pads go on, and the hitting commences. We’ll get to Sheppard later.
______________________________________________
#58 SLB Chris McCain 6’5” 250
Chris McCain was signed as an undrafted free agent in 2014. He played college ball for California. McCain was a special teams star last season, but also saw action in a few special packages at LB and DE as a pass rusher. This year, it seems the Dolphins intend for McCain to have a larger role as SOLB.
McCain will be competing with a veteran ST’s ace who we picked up from the New York Giants Spencer Paysinger. I’ll get to Paysinger later. McCain showed big play ability against the Patriots in Game 1 blocking a punt on ST’s. That’s what I call bursting on to the scene. The Dolphins feel McCain has the skills as as a pass rusher, and the ability to cover, so it should be a solid competition for the SLB spot.
______________________________________________
#42 LB Spencer Paysinger 6’2” 236
Paysinger was signed as an undrafted free agent in 2011 by the New York Giants. Paysinger is a ST’s ace, who will now be in the competition at the SLB position with 2nd year player Chris McCain, also a ST’s player. In 2013, Paysinger got an opportunity to play LB due to many injuries, and played in 16 games, starting 10. He finished the ’13 season with 74 tackles (56 solo), 1 sack, 1 FR, and 1 pass defensed. Last season in NY, Paysinger was back as a special teams player. No offense to Spencer, but I’m hoping Chris McCain steps up and takes the job, and never looks back. I see a higher ceiling with McCain, due to his age, size and speed.
______________________________________________
#52 MLB Kelvin Sheppard 6’2” 250
Kelvin Sheppard was drafted by the Buffalo Bills in the 3rd RD of the 2011 NFL Draft (pick #68). In his rookie year, Sheppard played in 16 games, starting 9 of them at MLB. He finished with 70 tackles (46 solo), 1 FR, 1 pass defensed, and 1 tackle for a safety. In 2012, Sheppard started 15 of the 16 games he played in, all at MLB. Sheppard finished the ’12 season with 80 tackles (56 solo), 2 sacks, 1 pass defensed. Sheppard was traded to the Colts for Jerry Hughes ( Seems like Buffalo did pretty well in that trade!) (In 2 years with BUF, Hughes has 20 sacks, 5 FF’s, 1 FR and 1 TD)
Back to Sheppard, who played the ’13 season in defenseless INDY. Sheppard played in 15 games at MLB for the Colts, starting only 7. He finished with 46 tackles (20 solo), 1 sack and 1 FR. Sheppard was signed by the Dolphins after being released by the Colts in 2014. He played sparingly in 14 games, starting 1. Sheppard totaled 24 tackles (17 solo), with 1 FF.
I think this former starter may have something to prove, and he may give incumbent starter Koa Misi a run for his money. Sheppard, much like Misi is a thumper. Sheppard isn’t particularly fast, and may be somewhat of a liability in pass coverage, but he can hit. It should be a pretty good competition for the MLB spot.
______________________________________________
#57 Jordan Tripp 6’3” 245 ?
Jordan Tripp was drafted by the Miami Dolphins in the 5th RD of the 2014 NFL Draft (pick #171). Tripp appeared in 13 games last season, mostly on ST’s/ Tripp was drafted at 234 lbs, but it seems as if he put on some good weight for this season, but since I haven’t seen an official weight for him, I’ll go with 245 with a question mark. He could even be more than that. Tripp is a very athletic LB, with good speed (4.67 40), excellent acceleration (3.96 20 YD shuttle), and agility (6.89 cone drill)
Tripp has an outstanding non-stop motor and a very good work ethic. I’m not sure whether he’s ready to compete for a starting spot now, but he’s definitely worked hard in the offseason, and looks the part. Tripp was an instinctive player at Montana, we’ll see if he can make it happen in MIA.
______________________________________________
#49 Zach Vigil LB 6’2” 240
The Dolphins signed Zach Vigil as an undrafted free agent in 2015. Vigil had an exceptional college career at Utah St. He piled up the tackles, higher each year culminating in a 156 tackle (79 solo) effort. In addition, Vigil had 9 sacks, 1 INT, (returned for a TD) 1 FF, and 4 passes defensed. He has the size, and athletic ability, but according to scouts, where Vigil is lacking is instincts. he’s a see and react type player rather than diagnosing and anticipating and reading what is happening. Perhaps he can learn some of that, we’ll see.
______________________________________________
#45 Mike Hull LB 6’0” 237
The Dolphins signed Mike Hull as an undrafted free agent in 2015. Hull, like Vigil had a nice college career, especially when he got a chance to play at “Linebacker U” Penn State. In his Senior year, Hull totaled 140 tackles (75 solo) 2 sacks, 1 INT, 2 FF’s, and 5 passes defensed. Hull had a real nice showing at the NFL combine, running a 4.68 40, 31 reps of 225lbs on the bench, a 6.99 cone drill, and an 11.52 60 YD shuttle, a top performer in each of those categories at the LB position. What Hull couldn’t hide at the combine was his short arms (30.5”) That’s an issue in the NFL trying to shed blockers, when they likely are going to have a 3″- 5” reach advantage. It’s unfortunate, because Hull has great instincts and sees the field well, and is a very reliable tackler. He’s also a little short at 6”, but as Dolphins fans, those of us who enjoyed the great play of Zach Thomas for a decade can appreciate the fact that it doesn’t always matter.

#48 Jeff Luc LB 6’1″ 256

Dec 6, 2014; Cincinnati, OH, USA; Cincinnati Bearcats linebacker Jeff Luc (1) during the second half at Paul Brown Stadium. Mandatory Credit: Mike DiNovo-USA TODAY Sports
Luc played college ball his freshman and Sophomore years at Florida St. but then transfered to Cincinnati, where he played both his Junior and Senior years. Luc piled up 156 tackles last year for Cincinnati (65 solo), 6.5 sacks, 6 FF’s (YES, SIX!), and 4 passes defensed.
Luc is described as a power-lifter that plays LB He didn’t paricipate at the NFL combine, but at his pro day, he ran an average of 4.59, but didn’t really stand out in any other drill. Very thickly built, Luc is excellent at shedding blockers, but due to his stiff lower body, he isn’t the most agile player on the field. Luc can play, and with 6 forced fumbles, he can obviously lay the wood too. He was thrilled to be back in FLA playing for the Dolphins as a Miami native.
______________________________________________
#46 Neville Hewitt LB 6’2″ 219
Hewitt played college ball at that school, uh, can’t think of the name . . . MARSHALL! That’s it The Thundering Herd of Marshall!
Hewitt played only 2 years at Marshall, and finished last season with 123 total tackles, (42 solo), 5 sacks, 1 INT, and 2 passes defensed. According to NFL Draft Scout, Hewitt runs a 4.69 40. Hewitt had surgery early in 2014 to repair a herniated disc and pinched nerve, but didn’t miss any playing time. NFL Draft Scout states Hewitt has good instincts, and is able to shed blocks well, despite not having ideal size. Some sites have Hewitt listed as 219, and others 231, so figure he’s somewhere in the middle. At 6’2″, that’s a little light, so he will need to add weight. Hewitt faces a tough battle to make to make the roster, but Hewitt is known for his perserverance, as his mother is currently in prison for drug trafficking.
_______________________________________________
In summation, I think the 2 biggest competitions will be at SLB between Chris McCain and Spencer Paysinger, and the MLB between Koa Misi and Kelvin Sheppard. For Paysinger and Sheppard, this could be their last big shot at a starting spot, so I expect them to do everything they can to make it happen. Misi is a survivor, so I don’t expect him to lay down either. McCain is young and inexperienced, but he has the size and ability to be a starter, but it will likely come up to how quickly he develops and learns his responsibilities. It could easily go either way.
As for Jordan Tripp, Zach Vigil, Mike Hull, Jeff Luc and Neville Hewitt, I think the latter 2 will have a hard time making the 53 man roster. They definitely face some tough odds. Tripp seems safe to make the roster, and despite the fact that he bulked up and looks the part, I think he may still have to be a special teams player and part time contributor to our defense. Luc, Hewitt, Vigil and Hull will likely have to make a strong impression on ST’s or in game action at LB to make the squad. In any case, I hope we go with best 3, regardless of draft position or salary. Again, my guess is Jenkins (almost a lock), McCain (strong showing in TC and preseason), and a surprise upset at MLB by Kelvin Sheppard, possibly helped by a nagging Misi injury

Now time for a public service announcement for smokers:
Commercial smoke detectors are not the same as your house
Each of these devices are connected to a monitoring panel
Each has a unique identification address to the system
The device produces a “pulse” signal that is received by the panel
As long as all signals are received, panel is happy
If the head of the device is removed, the signal is lost
The panel will report a trouble in the system
Due to the unique ID code
The panel will tell them exactly where this detector is located
So expect a visit about half way through your happy time lol
Gotta love a guy who can bring down Cam Newton.

Cutting our 5th best out of 6 DTs to sign a 10 yr vet who was part of the #1 run D in the league is a no-brainer.
They won’t let him wear 99 though.
Mike E; –Outstanding work, Mike, as usual. I’m sooo-oo-o thankful this site has you, Piggy, Ken, Son-of-a-Son, Dr. Rhino and so many others who keep us informed and entertained. And it’s all done without footnotes!!!

Been ultra-busy at work the last few days. Me and Mrs OD also have been busy doing volunteer work. My beautiful wife volunteers for several causes, including the Moffitt Cancer Center here in Tampa. A fella named “BOB GRIESE” is a member of the Board of Directors at Moffitt. NOT unusual to see him shaking hands in the hospital with those who remember how great he was during Miami’s unprecedented run to glory in 1972 and 1973. He truly is a sports hero!
———————————
Glad so many of you enjoyed the first installment of “FOLLOWING PERFECTION.” –Hope to talk to you again tonight or tomorrow.

PS:–WANT TO THANK whoever added that cover of Sports Illustrated and those pictures of 1973 Topps football cards to the article. I have a complete collection of Dolphin football cards from 1966 through the early 1970’s. The information on some of them is priceless!
Thanks for your contributions, they are very much appreciated.
I expect to hear at some point today that Kamal Johnson has been picked up by the patsies.
Good job Mike E but you might find yourself in trouble with Herd as you didn’t include the only Thundering Herd member of the team in your LB breakdown – Neville Hewitt.
even though he has an uphill battle just to make the practice squad.
Thanks. Damn, I forgot Jeff Luc too. Too bad I can’t add that from work, I would.
Anyone else here think Sheppard has a shot at MLB this season?
He does as does Tripp but damn dude don’t be predicting Misi injuries he needs all the positive mojo he can get.
Sheppard could very well earn a starting spot even if not in the middle it could be Jenkins, Misi and Sheppard if McCain struggles.
Sheppard has a better shot, I think, than Paysinger to start.
I hear ya on Sheppard. Not jinxing Misi, what’s gonna happen is gonna happen. He’s always got something bothering him, that’s whay I say that.
OD – Thank you sir! Also, as Son said, thank you for the Perfection Series, which are always a pleasure to read.
I think Misi is a lock as long as he is healthy and I wish him nothing but good health throughout. I would love to see him for a full season.
I think Misi is a lock too and having that beast DL should keep the fatties off him a bit better.
Good job Mike E!
LB is our weakest group IMO
If Misi stays healthy I think its a huge asset
We have some serious DTs to help keep our LBs clean
hopefully they thrive
if our LBs end up being an issue it definately has to be one of our top priorities next offseason
but its pretty clear to me that our team believes the key to success is through the DL
RIP Christopher Lee. Count Dooku, Dracula, Mr. Scaramanga dead.

To give proper attribution…I copied them from the internet…..none of them said they were protected, there were all kinds of copies of the same ones, except maybe the pic of the ticket…..which of course there would only be one of that particular seat…..there were lots of untorn tickets for sale which I took as confirmation of all the empty seats you mentioned in the article. 🙂
What do I do I need help:
The local Winn Dixie (grocery store) has a sign in the parking lot. It says, Did you forget something? Bring your bags with you. They want you to use the reusable canvas bags.
But since I did forget them I got the plastic bags and on the bag itself it says,
NEW
Stronger Bags
Since they are spending time and money upgrading them they must want me to use those right?
What do I do?
Shop at Shop Rite
We don’t have those. Winn Dixie is actually the step child the big dog is Publix where we mostly go.
Path Mark?
Nope, the only one that was down here that was up there, but gone now, is Pantry Pride. No Stop & Shop, no Grand Union, no A & P.
Nice job mike. I think sheppard will end up playing a lot of MLB because misi will probably be injured most of the year as he usually is.
Stop it, he needs positivity.
Son
They need to put up a Wegmans near you. Great supermarket. At first I was a little overwhelmed by it, but now that I’ve gotten used to it, I really appreicate it.
I’m familiar with them, from family in upstate NY, they are nice stores but Publix has such a strong hold that no one could come in. They ran Albertson’s a large western chain from Boise out of the state.
Walmart has stand alone grocery stores here, as well as the super centers, and they can’t beat Publix. Target has groceries as well. Aldi is just coming in the area and doing well, they’re cheap as hell.
Grand Union seems to have pulled out of my area. We used to have a Grand Union about a mile away when we first moved to NJ. It closed up about 2 years later.
New Age
Yeah, Lee was very good old time actor. He’s been in countless roles, but his best are the dark ones, he seemed to have that evil look down. lol
Son
Yeah, I forgot about Publix. I guess that and Winn Dixie are the most prevalent in FLA.
They still have Piggly Wiggly’s big down south don’t they?
They’re all gone as far as I know. Some other southern states may still have some.
Sad.
Kroger is the big grocery chain in my area.

I know I know! I fuh-got dem. I can’t add it at work either, so this is it.
I could add text actually, I just can’t add their pictures.
I think Jenkins, Misi and McCain will be the starting LBs and if they all stay relatively healthy (all 3 had injury issues last year), they will be a pretty good group. I see Sheppard and Paysinger as experienced depth and Tripp as a young guy looking for an opportunity to shine.

good write up MikeE…
It is worth noting that Paysinger and McCain on STs is a way to shore up that ‘third’ aspect of a complete team.
Will Vigil or Hull be able to make it as ST players? Not sure if they’ve done that in college.
Wyoming? do you have any of those tissues left? I need them after Tuesday night.
wow, i spend a sleepless night in anticipation of the news busting the plagiarist and all i find on here is grocery store talk and some tasteless pic of a cheerleader. come on dammit i want answers.
(nice job handman, and yeah i actually read some of the article)
Great break down Mike E. Still think we might find another LB wander in to Davie after cuts though.
Whoever we end up starting, hope we got guys who can pursue on the edge. With Suh and Phillips in the middle, have a feeling we are going to see a lot of outside runs this year. Also thinking Misi is going to look like a stud picking off whoever actually does make it to him up the middle with no guard or center paving the way.
…and McCoy LOVES to run the edges. Blount in NE up the middle (good for us). Jets’ Ridley and Ivory, hmm, one of each (?).

I’m not saying they’re right; I’m not saying they’re wrong. But what I am saying is you can’t take away that they got that title.”

Stevan Ridley only sorta of admitting what happened happened.
The one thing people just can’t rap their head around is that there are rules and if you break them you’re in the wrong regardless of whether you think it’s a big deal or not.

At least he spoke. You had guys like Jimmy “Superfly” Snuka who used to mumble incoherent things. I remember one time he was talking about Andre the Giant, and he meant to say the 8th wonder of the world, but instead he called him Andre the Giant, The Wonder Wape. lol
My man had the “Bionic Elbow”. I once jumped out of a tree and landed with an “elbow” on a kid’s head. My arm was bruised for a week afterwards.
Rassling got all of us bruised up. We tried a lot of those wrestling moves, like the figure 4 leglock, the DDT, the Piledriver etc. What happened to the kids head? lol
I once DDT’d my cousin,it knocked him out cold, he got me back later when he clothes-lined me so hard i fell flat on my back. on top of feeling like he had crushed my larynx i also knocked all the breath out of me. Maybe we should sue wrestling for failure to warn us about dangers of concussions and breaking someones neck.
I’m not scared of the Jets. And I’m not sure Bowles is all that. People think he’s the next belicheck or something.

Was never a big wrestling fan. Watched some of it as a kid but as I got older I thought it was silly.
I liked it until I was in my 20’s. We went a few times, and had a blast. Then it just got plain old silly.
Did anyone else think LeBron sliding into Curry should have been a foul? If not I have no idea what a foul is in the NBA.
Depends on if they felt like him sliding into him was intentional or not. Lebron is a physical player a lot of what he does is borderline fouls.
NBA never calls a foul on lebron. He can do whatever he wants on the court.
That’s the way I felt watching some of game 3. So nothing has changed in the NBA.

Same here, im suprised we didnt kill each other of put one or the other of us in a wheelchair for life. Friggin piledrive that got done on me made my ears ring, i went def for a few seconds and blacked out too. Neck hurt for a week after. Figure 4 is something i pull on my kids from time to time now lol.
Exactly. We used to jump off furniture in the house like Superfly Snuka. It was insane. Elbow smashes galore, Scissor holds like Mil Mascaras. I loved Mil, he was a lot of fun to watch. I think he was before your time, early 70’s. He was mostly on UHF channel 41, but later on he joined mainstream wrestling too I believe.

Was the same way, but Rick Flair was a family friend to one of my buddies, so i got to hang our with him a couple of times. Neat guy.
My friend Scott used to walk in the room, throw his head back and say “Wooooo” like Ric Flair did all the time. lol
i once won a Best Halloween costume contest for my Macho Man costume… it helped that I jumped off the counter at the bowling alley with a Flying Elbow smash… still watch Wrassling to this day, but the Glory Days were WCW vs WWE
Nice write up on the LB’s… I don’t see this being a weakness at all, but I drink a lot of kool Aid…

The Eagles have released Pro Bowl guard Evan Mathis.
I hope we sign him. A little insurance that could go a long way.
no negatives here

What’s the appropriate price for Evan Mathis, who is 34? Hard to envision him getting more than $8M for 2 yrs. But we’ll soon see.
I’m really not impressed with the way the Eagles handled Evan Mathis
Why?
Seems like his agent told him to hold out and messed him up, unless he had something in the works from another team.
he won’t get close to the $5.5 he would’ve made in Philly. Why would you not show up for OTAs, know the team didn’t want you, unless you had teams interested?
Thanks Toba!
Mike E,
I don’t think he complained about his head so much, but I think I compressed his neck which probably hurt worse than the elbow to the head.
LOL – Not so much his head, you just busted his spine. Gotcha. lol
Toba …
Doggie…. Get yer ass to the Fest this year…. And BTW I am going to see Styx this fall sometime… loved the band

the ocean?
no no no
Sharks can go anywhere now
Very well done, with the reference to everyone’s favorite movie (to spoof on)!
No bathtub is safe either

In all serousness, I lived across the street from the beach. For a while, every time I went in the ocean I looked real carefully to make sure i didn’t see any big dorsal fin sticking out of the water.
I didn’t like being in pools by myself. LOL
You weren’t alone, the beach was sure respected after Jaws came out. Seeing Jaws at Universal Studios a few yrs later made me ask what was all the fuss, and why did people think this phony looking shark was scary?

Styx is a great group. I saw them on their Mr. Roboto tour. They put on a great show, and it literally was like a show.
I saw them on Paradise Theatre tour … it was awesome.. when i heard Larry Gowan was now head man, I was skeptical, but I saw them on HIFI in concert and was pleasantly surprised.. Should be a good show…
as long as they don’t do any Gowan songs.. LOL
mike,
if we sign mathis he wont be insurance. he’ll start. I just hope the pats don’t get him
Sssssshhhhh. We know that, I just said that for Tim, Son, etc. lol
HERDFAN: Thanks for adding those pictures to my article. Miss Gigi added a few for me when I wrote the first group in 2012. Really appreciate the help.

Don’t recall seeing a post from our guy Bat today. Also, Christopher Lee just passed away. –Probably just a coincidence. I’d sure like to hear Bats’ take on Lee’s career.
GO BOLTS !!!
How are you OD? Hope all is well miss you!
I used to surf a great point break known as “shark hole.” A little river emptied between two islands at a weird angle and caused the water to stand perfectly still (or so it seemed to the human eye) and the sharks would slice through there at 78 MPH getting all the fish suspended in the calm. You could see them easy in the eerie clear water, but we were surfing either the north or south edge depending on the current, so they were 15- 30 feet away.
Speaking sharks……..
What if that shark is just fat, they may have just really hurt its feelings.
LMAO!!!!
