Evan Mathis not in a rush to find new team. Will likely be seeking more than the $5.5M per season which is what he was due to earn with the Eagles before being released. Not sure what his actual market will be for a guard who will turn 34 in November. He’ll likely listen to offers leading up to when teams start TC.
I think it would be great if we could land him on a one year deal for say $7.5M, because I’m not sure a guy his age should get a long term deal. We have around $10+M in cap space.
So we sign him for 7.5 for one yr, then what are we going to do next yr, let several guys go that were performing at a high level, like OV/Miller? All this from a position that isn’t a of high importance.
Several factors come into play here:
How bad can guys like Thomas/Turner/Douglas/McClendon/Linkenbach/Walton/Brenner be to bust next yrs cap?
Can 2 of these guys be anything better than a turnstile at worst? If yes, do you still pull the trigger on Mathis? DT gave up no sacks last yr playing guard, his natural position.
Will the cap go up enough next yr that we won’t have to cut several guys/not resign expiring contracts?
How much better could the team actually be with Mathis?
How does a one year deal this year have anything to do with next year?

We over $22M in dead cap money this year. A good portion of that should come off in 2016. I think that’s how we can pay Suh, Tannehill, Pouncey and some others.
Yep — sorta sad that we are paying for players not on the field, but then we get those cheap first year cap numbers on guys like Suh this year. Guess it is the cycle of the salary cap life.
It is sad that we have to pay dead money (thanks Jeffie), but the alternative is living with what we had last yr. It wasn’t horrible, but it also wasn’t productive going forward.
Jeffie’s last yr was sort of like Shula’s last yr when he signed all those former first rounders.
I think there’s two ways to carry dead money over to the next yr, one is June 1st cuts (this is off memory), the other is teams must notify the league of the amount they wish to carry over from one year to the next by 14 days before the new league year (I looked this one up).
We have the highest projected salary cap number in the league for 2016 $160 m, so we can’t pay RT and Suh next yr, unless the figure goes over that, or we cut some guys.
The dead money was well worth it this yr, because we had dead weight. I wouldn’t expect we’d have much dead weight in 2016, so guys that will get cut will make us worse.
When Tannebaum was first introduce as being in the Fins organization several on here said they hoped he doesn’t mortgage the future like he did in NY. Why is that not an issue any longer (signing Mathis would be just that)?
We wouldn’t have signed Suh, Tannehill or Pouncey to long term deals if we couldn’t do it.
The re-signing of Sanchez by Mr. T has nothing to do with what we did here. Sanchez was regressing, Tannehill is ascending.
I didn’t say we couldn’t do it, but there’s a cost now to every significant move made ($7.5 m for Mathis is significant, or even $4 m would be). You want to bring in Mathis fine, now who you going to give up?
The signing of Sanchez for big bucks wasn’t the only issue, but it was the one that pushed them over the top. What he did in NY would be the comparison to what Ireland did his last yr, except they already had cap issues in NY, and it was compounded more by the bad contract being at the most important position.
If Suh is injured and it lingers for a couple of yrs and/or doesn’t play up to his potential and RT regresses, and Pouncey regresses we’ll be right there with what Tannebaum did in NY.

Steve, I also agree with you about other guys being able to man the LG spot. Just that it seems we’re gearing up for a run so why not go all the way? Mathis isn’t getting a 4 year $30M deal at his age from any team. So offer him a solid one year deal and we move on next year.
That $7.5 m or whatever we’d pay him could’ve been rolled to next yr, which is needed.

Steve, if Suh, Tannehill and Pouncey regress in their prime we swung and missed. But why would you even expect that from a 4 time all-pro in a 5 year career, an ascending QB and a highly regarded pro bowl center?
If that’s the mindset, don’t sign anyone to big contracts and play with 2nd tier players and go 6-10 to 8-8 every year. We’ve been good at doing that.
I don’t expect that or even think that has much of a chance of happening, but Tannebaum didn’t think it was going to happen in NY either, and they were close.
It’s not the mindset, you have to take good calculated risks, signing Mathis isn’t that. you went from one extreme to the other in signing Mathis to not signing anyone.
They’ve done a great job, something none of us expected, or thought was possible, why fuck it up by going to far?
If we do pull the trigger on Mathis, you heard it here first, Tannebaum is out of control and needs to be stopped.
We can build it yr by yr or we can go for it this yr, and pay for it later substantially. so, if we don’t win the SB in 2015 it may take several yrs to get back to where we are now. Why would anyone take that risk? If we had won at least one game in the playoffs last yr, then that’s a different story.

The Dolphins are currently projected to be nearly $20 million over the salary cap in 2016. The league will almost surely raise the cap next year, but even that won’t be enough to relieve the Dolphins of their salary cap issues. To make matters worse, Miami still has to come up with the money to give defensive end Olivier Vernon a contract extension. The most likely candidate for a contract restructure is defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh, who is scheduled to have a cap hit of $28.6 million in 2016. After re-working Suh’s deal, the next most likely options for Miami would be to cut ties with defensive end Dion Jordan and restructure the contracts of cornerback Brent Grimes and punter Brandon Fields.

Rollover is what you’re missing. If we didn’t sign Moreno in 2014 we could’ve rolled it over to 2015, then 2016…, but I don’t see that as a big deal we only signed him to $3 m, in a yr we were fine with the cap.

Damn, Steve I didn’t know our cap situation could be so dire. Just go with Douglas anyway. He said he wants to start I want to see him pull it off.
We’re still ok, if we don’t make any other moves. We’re $10m under this yr, that gets carried over to next yr, then the cap goes up to $160m next yr, that would put us at $7m under next yr enough money to sign OV and Miller.
In the article I posted about us being $20 m over the cap for 2016 it said the overage was based on the cap number for 2015, so I expect us to be pretty close to the cap in 2016, and still have to sign OV and Miller. At this moment I don’t see any dead weight on the roster, except maybe Dion Jordan, we could save about $5 m by releasing him.

I see wat Steve is saying and he has a valid point. There are other fixes that could alleviate the issue but the easiest by far is to just rollover the entire $10 million for next year. We will see what they plan to do.

It kills me to see over and over again silly comments like does Mathis bring us a championship? No one player can do that, but what’s so difficult about understanding that he’s better than just about everyone on our line maybe save for Albert when healthy, and he totally solidifies our O-line? No offensive guard wins a championship, but last I looked, the great Kong Suh has ZERO championships in Detroit, and no playoff wins either. It’s like no one here watched a fucking game last year when O-line sucked, and we couldn’t do anything. I know we’re ll hoping Albert is healthy and the 2 young guys will step up, but you sign Mathis, it takes a lot of pressure off the other spots on the line. You can cover 1 weak link much easier than covering two.
It’s not about one guy putting us over the top. It is a team game. It’s about solidifying as many positions as you can to make the team more talented and deeper. I know you know this. My change on Mathis is a one year deal because we have everyone signed and $10+M available. Keep getting better. Mathis won’t be a part of this team moving forward. But maybe Thomas and Douglas are better and more ready in 2016. Thomas hasn’t been here for 5 years and just sucks. LOL
Wade Smith struggled with us as a rookie/young LT and was jettisoned when Saban came in. He went on to be a quality guard under John Benton with HOU even making the pro bowl one year. You never know when a young player is going to settle in. Jason Fox might show that at LT this year where he’s working most of the time.
I’m absolutely fine signing him for a big 1 YR contract. I don’t see him in the long term here, and yes, hopefully after a year, Thomas or more likely Douglas is ready to step in. This year, Mathis makes us better, and why not be better when you can. The money doesn’t get us anywhere unspent. Not sure if Mathis would take a 1 YR big contract, but I’d be very happy with it. Even a token 2 YR contract loaded up for this year, with a small penalty if we cut him next year is good with me.

I just read your last post from the previous article. What I find amazing is that anyone would value that opinion piece. There is little scientific data to support their stance and 2 of the writers are economists and the third has never written anything else before that piece(as far as I know).
They are still ignoring his refusal to cooperate with an investigation while ignoring other parts of the investigation in their piece. It’s amazing how much pull the Pats have since ESPN is located right up their asses.Want to change a national narrative? Have your reporters downplay the cheating for weeks every chance they can get.
Also, if you put signing Evan Mathis is a vacuum, forgetting about other moves we’ve made, and just in the light of whether it helps our team, it’s pretty obvious to me we’re better with him than without him. This also doesn’t mean we can’t do without him, I just think we’re better with him starting for us over Dallas Thomas.
Nobody is debating that.

Mathis would definitely make us better. Just finding out how we can work around what he wants and what we need is the only real question. Just like La’el, it may not work out but I would like to see him in a Phins uniform once again.
I understand that aspect of it, but that’s not our problem. Let the FO get creative, as they have been, and make it work.

I agree with mike regarding mathis. Do whatever you have to and get him for this year. We haven’t been to the playoffs in 7 years. This team is in a big need of a playoff appearance.
I don’t mind going all out so we can get in next year. We’ll worry about 2016 later.

Yep. Not sure if there is a limit on how much, but we can for sure carry over that much. Think we did it with like 9 mil plus last year into this one.

There are loopholes like that, but the cap is pretty hard. In the last CBA the new issue was putting in a hard line on the underspending side. Now teams have spend some average of the cap window over a rolling window of years (think like five). That one is actually not good for us since Ross is a spender.
I’m real sure I’m more interested in the College World Series than just about anybody else on this board. Nonetheless, when we talked about it at work, I said that “for my money, Florida and Vanderbilt are the two best teams I’ve seen all season>” Florida was the BEST team Florida Atlantic played all year, from top-to-bottom. Their defense was terrific, their pitching was clutch, and they were masters of the art of timely hitting. Wasn’t too surprised when Florida blew out Miami. The Canes just don’t have the pitching depth or defense to hang with the Gators–Vandy, the team with the BEST OVERALL PITCHING I’ve seen this season, has a legit shot to repeat as National Champions. I’d place LSU and Arkansas, the other two SEC teams in the CWS, just a rung below Florida and Vandy. –TCU, a team that has amazing base stealing capabilities, cannot be ignored. But I’d be surprised if a non-SEC team wins the title this season.

Yes, but the money for his 2015 contract, if you didn’t sign him could be rolled over to 2016.
There’s no right and wrong answer to should we sign him, you make a choice for whatever reason and live with it. What’s the goal? Is it to make the playoffs this yr, then by all means sign him. Is it to win an SB in the next 2-3 yrs, then you have to weigh the options of signing him compared to releasing someone else next yr.

In reference to the salary cap confusion:
1. It is a hard cap
2. Teams must spend 88% of the current years cap, which is why Jax and Oak were spending so much this offseason. Some were questioning their signings, but they had a ton of cap space and HAD to spend the money.
3. Any money not used over that 88% can be rolled over to the next year.

Why didn’t you say so? I would’ve used piggies. The cap is 10 piggies, we’ve already used 9 piggies, if we sign Mathis for 1 piggy our cap is maxed, but if we don’t sign we can use this yrs piggy next yr, making the 2016 cap number = 11 piggies 😛
The cap this yr is $143 m, we’ve allotted $133 m so far, if we sign Mathis for say $10 m 1 yr contract we’d be at $0 left on the 2015 cap. If we don’t sign Mathis we can rollover that $10 to next yrs cap. Let’s say the 2016 cap is $160 m, we’d have $160 m + $10 m in rollover money, for a total of $170 m.
It’s simple Mike whatever you don’t use one yr (Brian above says you have to spend $88 m) you can rollover to the next yr to use for you cap, but you have to tell the league you want to roll it over.

WYOMING; I’d say Novacek had a pretty good career with Dallas. But I might still give the award for the best ex-Wyoming football player to Kiick. BTW, you may know that when Kiick & Morris were competing for the SAME position, Shula would START Kiick (usually) when the Fins were playing near Kiick’s old stomping grounds in New York and Morris (an alum of West Texas State) STARTED when Miami played at Dallas in 1973. Just another way Shula handled a potentially explosive issue with class and dignity.
The stats seem to back that up OD, as Kiick had 1400 more yards from scrimmage 3 more TDs, they were both clutch in their own right on 3rd down.
I didn’t think the NFL cap was like the NBA. When did this carry over start? I’m not sure this is accurate.
What is carryover?
NFL teams won’t actually be working with the exact same salary cap in 2015. Since 2011, teams have been allowed to take unused cap space and apply it to the following season provided they announce the amount before the end of the regular season in progress. For example, The Jaguars will be carrying over nearly $21.8 million to the 2015 salary cap because they spent so little in 2014, which, in addition to “other adjustments,” gives them a league-leading $168.5 million adjusted cap figure to work with.

Why do you think the Fins always give new contracts a low first yr cap figure? So they have more cap $$ that first yr to use on other players, if they choose to, but if they don’t use it for other players and aren’t stuck they just carry it over to the next yr. By stuck I mean, an emergency player replacement, so you’d have cap space to fill that in season need without having to cut someone.
This is real and it’s due to our own behavior. Fishing, chumming, changing the feeding habits etc.

I agree. I was at Isle of Palms off the Charleston, SC coast this past week. I told my sister it made me nervous seeing these guys out fishing from the beach, it seemed to me it would just be luring things in to the beach that I’d rather stay much further out in the ocean.
Steve, the cap went from 124 3 years ago to 133 last year to 143 this year. We’re actually projected at $155,341,488…if the cap continues to grow true to form we’re barely over the cap (projected) next year, and guess who can be cut saving us 3 million dollars? Dion Jordan.
We’re virtually already under the cap next year with contracts as is. There will invariably be another vet cap casualty or two next year as their are every year, and if we have the cap space to sign Mathis this year without guaranteeing any of the money next year (or very little), we would be fine.
Tannenbaum is certainly playing it more aggressive than Ireland, but he’s not mortgaging the future as of yet.

Spotrac was actually caught stealing his stats and reposting them as their own. I used to keep a spreadsheet of my own for the fins, but this guy was actually faster than I was at getting new contract info and I was always playing catch up. Now I just stick with him. He does it for every team in the league. Ironically, I think he’s a Jets fan and when he first started he only did the AFC East teams.
