FOLLOWING PERFECTION: THE 1973 MIAMI DOLPHINS

 GAME 11; Miami @ Dallas, Nov. 22, 1973 (Thursday)

The NFL schedule maker arranged a real feast for football fans on Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 22, 1973. The defending Super Bowl VII champion Miami Dolphins were sent to Texas Stadium to play the Cowboys, who defeated Miami in Super Bowl VI. Before the game started, a moment of silence was observed to acknowledge the 10th anniversary of the death of President John F. Kennedy in Dallas on Nov. 22, 1963.

The Dallas Cowboys were the NFL’s first modern era expansion team. In the late 1950’s, Lamar Hunt was rebuffed in his efforts to bring NFL football to Dallas. Washington Redskins owner George Preston Marshall enjoyed his status as the only professional football representative of the southern states. Repeatedly, Marshall blocked any potential applicant from getting a franchise in the deep south. So Hunt, and a group of extremely wealthy businessmen, formed the rival American Football League. It was announced that TWO AFL franchises would be located in Texas (the Dallas Texans, owned by Lamar Hunt, and Bud Adam’s Houston Oilers), beginning in 1960.

Two prominent Texas residents, Clint Murchison, Jr., and Bedford Wynne, applied for an NFL franchise for Dallas. Sensing opposition from the Redskins, Murchison and Wynne purchased the rights to the Redskins fight song, “Hail to the Redskins!” They informed Redskins’ management they would REFUSE PERMISSION for Washington to play the song at Redskins’ games unless Marshall supported the new Dallas NFL application. Marshall relented and, belatedly, Dallas was awarded an NFL franchise in 1960.

This franchise initially was known as the Dallas Steers and, then, the Dallas Rangers. Soon, the nickname was changed to Cowboys. The ownership group hired Texas (Tex) Schramm as general manager, Gil Brandt as director of player personnel and Tom Landry, formerly defensive coordinator of the New York Giants, as their head coach. Both Schramm and Landry have since been inducted into the NFL Hall of Fame.

By the end of 1971, the Dallas Cowboys were among the very best franchises in the National Football League. They narrowly lost Super Bowl V to the Baltimore Colts (who were quarterbacked to victory by back-up QB Earl Morrall, who replaced an injured Johnny Unitas in that game’s second quarter). Then, at Super Bowl VI, they easily defeated the Dolphins. By 1973, the Dallas Cowboys cheerleaders had achieved iconic status. And the football team had become “America’s Team.”

Dallas was riding high as they came into this Thanksgiving Day showdown against Miami. In succession, they had crushed the Bengals (38-10), the Giants (23-10) and the Eagles (31-10). Quarterback Roger Staubach and his teammates were brimming with confidence. And why not? A total of FIVE future Hall of Famers were on this team!

But NO TEAM in the NFL was playing as well as the Miami Dolphins. Miami had won 8 consecutive games and 25 of their last 26 contests. Miami’s last two shutout destructions of Baltimore (44-0) and Buffalo (17-0) had observers saying “This may be the best defense in NFL history!”

Head coach Don Shula stressed to his team the importance of winning this game. A victory over the Cowboys would maintain Miami’s edge in the race for home field advantage in the AFC. While many called Dallas “America’s Team,” Shula wanted his team to be known as “America’s BEST Team.” He believed the Dolphins would prove it on the football field.

The players, for their part, also thought they had something to prove. Most of them were on the Super Bowl VI team that was drubbed by Dallas. There was this matter of pride. Their pride had carried them through the NFL’s one and only Perfect Season in 1972. This same pride would help them to prove they were the BEST team in 1973. To achieve this, they HAD to defeat Dallas in this nationally televised Thanksgiving Day game.

Csonka 1st QMiami had gotten off to a very fast start in their last two shutout victories. All-Pro safety Jake Scott made sure of a third straight Dolphins’ fast start when he intercepted Staubach’s first pass at the Dallas 38 and returned it to the Cowboys’ nine yard line! A Dallas penalty moved the ball inside the five. Two Csonka runs got the ball to the one. From there, Csonka bulled his way into the Cowboys’ end zone putting Miami ahead 7-0.

Morris 1st Q

Miami’s “No-Name” defense stuffed Dallas on their second possession. Marv Bateman’s punt backed the Dolphins up to the Miami 32. From there, Mercury Morris sprinted for a 12 yard gain. Two plays later Griese went back to pass. No one was open, so Griese scrambled for 21 yards for a first down at the Dallas 45.

Griese

The time was ripe for one future Hall of Famer, Paul Warfield, to test another future Hall of Famer, Dallas cornerback Mel Renfro. Griese and Warfield faked a quick-out sideline pattern. Renfro bit. Griese’s downfield pass was right on the money. Warfield left Renfro in his dust as he scored a 45 yard touchdown, putting Miami ahead 14-0 at the end of the first quarter.

Roger Staubach was determined to get Dallas right back in this game. He guided a Dallas drive that started from their 17 yard line.  Tough running by Walt Garrison and Calvin Hill got the Cowboys moving. Passes to Hill and Drew Pearson kept the drive alive. On fourth down and three yards to go from the Miami five, Landry decided to forego a short field goal. He told Staubach to go for it! Cowboy fans stood and applauded!

Miami appeared to stack the defense toward the middle of the field. Seeing this, Staubach checked-off to a Calvin Hill run around right end. Right after the audible, Lloyd Mumphord and Dick Anderson shifted to the exact area the run was designed to go. They occupied Dallas’ blockers, giving Jake Scott a clean shot at Hill. Scott crushed Hill, forcing him out of bounds for a SEVEN YARD LOSS!!  You could hear a pin drop as the Dolphins jogged off the field with a 14-0 halftime lead at Texas Stadium!

staubach

A scoreless third quarter was dominated by the two defenses. A desperate Dallas team finally mounted a successful drive in the fourth quarter. The long 94-yard drive ended when Walt Garrison scored on a one yard run, narrowing the gap to 14-7.

With 8:41 left on the clock Griese and the Dolphins offense went to work. First down followed first down. The clock kept running. With less than one minute left, Miami had the ball at the Dallas one yard line. They COULD have scored again. But head coach Don Shula let the clock run out. The Dolphins had defeated the Dallas Cowboys.

The star of the game, Jake Scott, celebrated in the post game locker room. Head coach Don Shula was also smiling. His running offense had run the ball 41 times for an average of 4 yards per carry (even with a couple of Griese kneel downs at the end.) Griese was 6 for 10 for 103 yards passing, including a key touchdown to Warfield. Once again, Griese was not sacked in this entire game. In fact, Griese had only been sacked 8 times in Miami’s first 11 games!!

Next up: a Monday Night Football date in the historic Orange Bowl with another NFL heavyweight, the talented Pittsburgh Steelers.

The 1973 Miami Dolphins were now 10-1.

Id be terrified as a parent of a kid on the opposing team.

That big kid could seriously hurt some smaller kids.

    • stangerx says:

He’s like the Fridge revisited. His future at the next level is probably at another position though except for goal line.

Something to be said for being bigger. Had a game against a college team with my men’s club (and I for instance was like 30 lbs bigger than back in school). At one point somebody said…..yeah they are pretty fast but we can just run straight through all those little kids….why try to go around them? Exactly what we did, and it worked just fine.

  15. getterdone says:

Bumped into an official who was working today’s practice at my hotel. Asked him if the field was bad. He said, “No. Freak injuries.”

    • Tim Knight says:

It happens every day all across the league.

      • getterdone says:

We’ll be fine….Delmas was getting torched deep a lil bit in camp as it was. I don’t think he has the knees for this game.
He’ll be wonderful mentoring from the sidelines and locker room.

  16. The Flying Pig says:

People were saying the grass was wet and uncut and may lead to injuries
It is probably just freak injuries though

  17. Tim Knight says:

GD, I’m not worried about the team because I like Aikens and Thomas and think they’ll prove to be good players. I’m bummed for Delmas, he’s a good dude and worked realyl hard to get back. But you’re right he’ll still be a good influence for the young guys. His career is likely over. Same knee twice in back to back years?

  18. D says:

That kid with the right training would be a friggin sick NT, clogs up 0 and 1 holes at same time and his height would be make the QB have to step left or right (into the path of the DE), just to have a clear throwing lane. He could still run the ball occasionally like they are potentially going to do with Mitchell, but either way, its almost disturbing to see him in that still fram shot running at that tiny little guy, number 3. That kid’s parents probably had a hold your breath moment whent hat happened.

  19. BoulderPhinfan says:

I bet we sign a veteran safety.

    • Tim Knight says:

I hope we don’t. Thomas is in his 3rd year, Aikens his 2nd and we drafted a safety in Thompson this year. I went into this season thinking Aikens was going to be the other safety before we re-signed Delmas and even then because of his knee I though Aikens would still be a factor. I really hope the coaches give him the chance and he excels.

      R. Jones is also in his 6th season now so we have a vet back there.

  20. BoulderPhinfan says:

out of the 2014 draft class. James, Landry, Turner, Aikens, McCain all starting and Damien Williams as the No 2 RB. Pretty crazy.

  21. finfanrob says:

    Adam Beasley @AdamHBeasley
Bumped into an official who was working today’s practice at my hotel.

the dolphins were practicing at a hotel? wtf, philbin you suck, make them practice on a football field.

  22. getterdone says:

Louis Delmas is expected to miss the season after being diagnosed with a torn ACL in an initial test. So Walt Aikens gets his chance to prove he’s a starting NFL safety, alongside Reshad Jones.

The front office is very high on Aikens, a fourth-round pick last May. Aikens had a couple of off-field issues last season but Dolphins defensive players, including Michael Thomas, have been complimentary about his improved maturity and increased attention to detail.

“Walt has been doing a great job,” Jones said last week. “He has all the ability. Big, physical, can run well. He just needs to continue to work on his craft and get more in the playbook and learn the defense in and out. He can help us on defense.”

And he will be needed to help more than anyone imagined a week ago.

Michael Thomas becomes the No. 3 safety, with a potentially larger role if Aikens doesn’t seize the opportunity.

Cedric Thompson and Jordan Kovacs are competing for the No. 4 job. And Don Jones, activated off PUP today, is still working his way back from a shoulder injury.

Among veteran safeties who are unsigned: Thomas DeCoud, DeWan Landry, Quinton Carter, Bernard Pollard, Delano Howell, CJ Spillman and LaRon Landry (who is suspended for the first 10 games this season).
    ____________________________________________

The only guy I’d consider from that vet FA list is Thomas DeCoud, otherwise I think we’ll have good competition between Aikens, Thomas, Thompson, & Don Jones.

  23. BoulderPhinfan says:

    tim,
I thought last year one of the excuses for the defense going south was because Delmas injury.

If they don’t bring in a vet, we better not use it as an excuse this year.

    • Tim Knight says:

Not just him, we lost Thomas, Taylor, Davis, Finnegan and Aikens was suspended by the team for some misconduct for a game. That’s 6 DBs including Delmas. Like I said it wasn’t just a few injuries here and there throughout the team, it was a lot for one unit. The same at LB. I don’t view it as an excuse, I view it as losing talent.

  24. Tim Knight says:

This is LaRon Landry now. Yeah he’s not juicing. LOL

Jets officially sign veteran QB Matt Flynn. He’s made more than $18 million in career despite only 7 starts.
    ———————————–
Could make a similar argument about Matt Moore though.

    • Tim Knight says:

Moore’s actually played solid in multiple games. He never got paid like that either.

      • D says:

Moore was a 5 mil a year backup for past couple years and didnt see the field but ever so little. I think if you did his money to snaps it would be really really high too, thats not to say i dont think Moore > Flynn, because i do, i just think sometimes if a person is a solid backup, he makes money without any production. Flynn also has benefit of two teams originally signing him to starter money before relegating him to backup role, so that explains a lot of his money without snaps.

    • Ken says:

Flynn has done a respectable job as a backup. Despite some of us here, myself included, clamoring for him one upon a time, he does not appear to be starter material.

  45. Ken says:

Matt Flynn may actually be the best QB on the Jets roster.

    • D says:

I think Fitzpatrick is probably the best QB, he just isnt going to consistantly produce wins. He looks the part of a starting QB at time, but others….not so much. Flynn is wildly inconsistent, but might occasionally have a good game, i think Fitz probably most relaibale one they have though. Fitz is actually someone id say would be comparable to Moore as a vet backup. Id feel comfortable with him as my 2nd guy.

….especially ones that can seal the edge in run support like Vernon….IMO.
    —————————————–
I see Vernon as a very complete DE, not overly deficient in either pass rush or run support, but also not overly dominating in either as well. Good solid balanced DE, and there is something to be said about that. Can we do better, year, but definately could be a lot lot worse.

    • Tim Knight says:

If this was that big of a deal teams would be afraid to cut players but they don’t seem to care. We’re not the only team who releases players and they get picked up by division rivals.

      • BoulderPhinfan says:

    ———————————-
Argument wasnt about the quality of Moore, at least not from my side, the argument i was having was that how much money he has made per snap taken is probably inline with Flynn’s numbers. Moore imo is a more dependable backup than Flynn would be, and im not attempting to make any counter arguments in regards to that.

    • Ken says:

I get ya. Hard to place a value on a good back up. You hope they never have to take a snap but if they do you want somebody who can compete and not necessarily cost you a game. I think Moore does that and I think Flynn does that. You just don’t want to count on either of them for 16 games. If I had to I would take Moore over Flynn.

I think Fitzpatrick is in the same type of category as both Moore and Flynn. Very solid back up QB. You can put him for a handful of games and he will be competitive but you can’t count on him over 16 games on a consistent basis.

Aikens will have a lot of practice and playing time with the 1s with 3 PS games left. Go Walt!

whats the big deal. who cares. according to 99.99999% of people here we have suh on defense. i didnt think anybody else mattered

hate to sound uninformed but i am. and you guys might have said on here before but i am so busy avoiding the ask mike articles i might have missed it. but why is this shady thing in court. i mean isnt the nfl a private organization and the players organization agreed to a CBA? or is it just another case of ‘dont blame me, i am suing you now’

    • BoulderPhinfan says:

I was wondering about that myself. If the CBA is signed doesn’t that mean the CBA is the law when it comes to NFL?

    • The Flying Pig says:

Fed ct still has jurisdiction even in the existence of a CBA

However generally, my take is, courts will not disturb decisions made under a CBA

In the AP case, the players union sued the nfl in court to undo the decision made by the NFL

Think of it as an appeal

The fed court found the ap suspension inrproper bc essentially the nfl punished him twice and there was no grounds for that in the NFL

So the court has to find soemthing like that IMO to disturb a decision reached by the NFL

I thought ap was exception and not the trend
      But that might be wrong

still doesnt make sense. the agreement says goodell has the authority. why now do the courts get to old overrule a private agreement

  71. The Flying Pig says:

    FFRob and Boulder

Don’t be surprised if at the end of the day the court says they decline to disturb the findings of the NFL bc of the CBA

I think asking the court, generally, to undo a ruling made pursuant to a private contract is the exception

But we are only 1 year removed from the AP ruling

Right now in this case the only thing ruled on is that by should be the forum not Minnesota

Other than that, it’s just settlement conferences
and it clear to me the court doesn’t want to rule on anything bc of the sensitivity of the issues

When we get closer to the season, if there is no settlement or ruling by the court kicking them out of court, Brady will have a choice, move for injunctive releif to stop the suspension or just begin to be suspended

If they move, it will force the court’s hand to push past this settlement conference stuff and make a ruling in whether the court can undo to decision or not

So don’t assume just bc the fed ct is hearing settlement conferences, they’ve said we are going to disturb a rulings made pursuant to a private conference

    • The Flying Pig says:

If the NFL was a govt agency
      And the nfl suppressed unions
Then there might be a 1st amendment violation

But a breach of the first amendment is not hhe federal question that gets them to federal court

Im mentioning this but at the end of the day it may be meaningless
Bc most federal labor laws adopt these ideas and those apply to the private sector and will get some one to fed court
I do to think that is what is going in here though, not sure

There is also antitrust laws that might give the court jurisdiction. I don’t know anything about antitrust so I won’t even touch it

      The thing is
The question FFRob and boulder are asking is not a question of a party’s standing to be in federal court

If the court elects not to disturb a decision issues pursuant to a CBA, they can do that, even if a federal question (like 1st amendment breach or labor law violation) exists

  73. finfanrob says:

    piggy,

thanks. that is now as clear as mud.

and from what i gathered, just more mumbo jumbo bs of wasting the courts and taxpayers time and money.

      Ding fries are done.

    • The Flying Pig says:

      Yeah

Frankly I’m a little confused about the procedural posture

I would rather the court just say, this doesn’t belong here, dismissed
Than try to do this pushing the parties to settle dance

      • Try Pod says:

The question I have, in light of your opinion, is why is it being portrayed through the media that the nfl is losing/Brady is winning?

  74. The Flying Pig says:

    Try
Either bc I’m really wrong ..lol
Of bc the court is pressuring he parties to settle
And pressuring the NFL to budge

And the NFL may not be budging bc they know, they have the upper hand
Having the judge disturb the finding is a major hurdle to get over for Brady, people are right to question why it is being entertained

My guess is – the judge doesn’t want to write a decision on the subject
Maybe he vacations in cape cod…lol

    • The Flying Pig says:

The average sport journalist doesn’t know judges like an attorney knows judges

They don’t know the mind games
      The ridiculous tendency to punt
      And the posturing

They are just reporting what is said

And the judge isn’t going to say “how did I get this fucking mess”

      • Try Pod says:

That’s kinda the answer I was looking for- the journalist(s) are not properly reading the situation.

  75. jetsssuck says:

Brady may have a case against goodell for malice at the end of this. Imagine if he gets divorce and loses half his wealth to his famous wife.

    • BoulderPhinfan says:

how is goodell responsible for that? deflategate actually deflated brady and he became impotent so his wife left him?

      • jetsssuck says:

how could he become impotent with a wife like his. LOL

“Defamation” is a catch-all term for any statement that hurts someone’s reputation.

a lot of tax payer money gets wasted when really rich people are involved with the courts. They have money and attorneys to be in court all day every day.

Spoiler alert: read the blurb at the bottom of Vernon Davis’s page @ #11 which leads to the guy at #10. yeah you know who it is!! Ranked higher than Vernon f’n Davis!!!
btw Clay is 9th … oh well … we’ll see if he can put up numbers without Tannehill throwing to him.

  78. Tim Knight says:

Just remember we were #2 in pass defense with Delmas the first 10 games and fell to #6 without him. But we got run on a lot the last 6 games so it skews the numbers but it says a lot.

Go Walt Aikens. He’s a good prospect, embrace him.
