It’s (Preseason) GAME DAY! #3

header                 (Header from CBS Sports)

It’s the game that’s traditionally closest to what a regular season game will be.  The starters will likely play a full half and likely into the 3rd Quarter.  It’s the first game the Dolphins will be playing at Sun Life Stadium after an offseason of renovations.  It’s one more game closer to a game that matters.

As for the battle at corner, Jamar Taylor allowed just 1 of 5 passes to be completed this preseason for 6 yards. McCain: 1-2-15.

    Adam Beasley @AdamHBeasley
Plus Taylor had an interception. Based on my eyes, the job should be his (health permitting, of course).

  2. getterdone says:

MIKE E, this is for you & Evan Mathis! 😉

    Adam Beasley @AdamHBeasley
    Preseason OL stats (sacks-hits-hurries): Turner 0-0-1, Thomas 1-0-1, James 1-0-1, Pouncey 0-0-0, Fox 0-1-0, Walton 0-1-1, Douglas 0-0-2.

    Adam Beasley @AdamHBeasley
So even without Albert the entire preseason, the starting OL allowed just 2 sacks in ~80 snaps. Dolphins will take that all year.

    • Rockphin says:

That is specifically because Tannehill is no longer taking sacks. He FINDS the completion now before the pressure can totally disrupt the play. (lots of short passes, but we are seeing nice YAC.

      • Tim Knight says:

That’s the offense – high percentage passes and the receivers need to get YAC. Then he’ll hit on deeper throws when they’re there.

Landry plays so much faster than his 40 time. He has football speed.

    • steveccnv says:

This is what I’ve been saying for yrs, do it the Brady way, just try to get positive plays on every down, making the next down a little easier.

Another thing positive plays do is frustrate the D, so instead of that pass rusher thinking he’s actually doing something the short passes start to get him thinking short pass and jump up and try to knock it down, instead of rushing the passer.

  3. Rockphin says:

God, I hate the old broads on that VW commercial too! I don’t know anything, that’s all I have to say. I didn’t see nuthin’.

    • steveccnv says:

I wonder what type of people previewed it before it went live for the first time? The first one was bad enough, but why would you let them do a second one? Because people are talking about it, it doesn’t matter to them if you like it or not, what matters is they are getting pub.

  4. Tim Knight says:

Boulder, we should wait until the cut down to 75. I’m short 3 roster spots. I didn’t know you were locking it now.

  5. getterdone says:

    James Walker ✔ @JamesWalkerNFL
After studying the tape, three #Dolphins’ sacks on #Falcons QB Matt Ryan Sat. came on four-man rushes. That is impressive by MIA’s d-line.
This will make blitzing lights out for Marsha & other non-mobile QB’s! 😉

Must be a Dolphins win hangover going on around here…

It’s preseason, the win had nothing to do with it, we’re buying the hype, because we can see it. I pity the fool that…

    • Tim Knight says:

Our front 4 are beasts. I can see Jenkins getting a lot of tackles this year. He flies all over the field.

      • getterdone says:

Perfect for a guy like Tripp & Vigil too, or a smaller thumper like Hull as well.

      • getterdone says:

As well as Reshad Jones in run support & the other DB’s.

So bottom line…money well spent chasing SUHper Man, cause he’s like getting a whole defensive unit in one guy….lol

Smart get by Tbaum & the Hickster, with Rossy’s blessings!

  7. Rockphin says:

Thomas got smoked on a first and 10 play that Miller got caught for a loss of 3

  8. Rockphin says:

On the following play he does a great job dropping back into pass coverage and blocking two guys.

  9. The Flying Pig says:

  10. Rockphin says:

I am re-watching the game now stopping and backing up each play.

  11. Rockphin says:

After setting a Dolphins rookie record with 84 receptions in 2014, he heads into the 2015 season as a key member of a new-look receiving corps.

“I’ve always been real consistent with catching the football,” Landry said. “I can’t give enough credit to (Ryan) Tannehill and Coach (Bill) Lazor for putting me in those positions, but 84 catches that’s just the floor for me. It’s just the floor for me and there’s nowhere (to go) but up. So I’m excited to see what this year brings, excited to see how far we can go as a Dolphins organization, as a team, as a group.”

  12. getterdone says:

    • Rockphin says:

I watched it at the bar last night and PPL were looking at me for sure. LOL

One guy: “Dude, it’s only preseason.”
Rockphin: “Fuck you my Dolphins are playing” LOL
      Rockphin’s Buddy: “I’m not with him…..”
Rockphin: “Bartender! He’s not on my check”

  13. son of a son of a shula says:

Landry was expecting Sims to remain at full speed and go through the defender but instead Sims kind of checked up. I bet he’ll get a talking to for that despite the fact that it was a terrific play.

  14. Rockphin says:

Come on Sims! You make one block there and it is a TD.

Landry will lull LB’s & DB’s asleep on Cameron shooting down the seam!

Yes it could be scary. I’m also liking the way they have Miller leaking out in space he’ll be dangerous.

    • Tim Knight says:

I love the way Lazor uses our backs out of the backfield in space. That’s what the spread offense will do for you. It creates a lot of open space for skill players to run and we have a lot of them. Wait until we add Parker to the mix and he gives us a tall rangy perimeter receiver. I think we’ll also use him on deep crossing routes and fades inside the redzone.

  16. Rockphin says:

Devin Hester makes Misi MISSI bad.

  17. Rockphin says:

Vernon was making tackles for losses of 10,8, etc. Mitchell was balling next to Suh

  18. Rockphin says:

I loved that stat above. Three of our sacks on the first team last night came on 4 man rushes.

    • Tim Knight says:

Yep! That’s the goal then you can drop 7 and crowd the field and keep passes shorter.

    • getterdone says:

The best sack / PANCAKE on Matty Lice was when #93, #90, & #50 all flattened him at the same time with no penalty! KABOOM!

      • Tim Knight says:

Yeah I was on the phone with my friend who’s also a Phins fan and we were like look at the way we obliterate the pocket and backfield. 🙂

  19. Tim Knight says:

Landry will line up all over the place and then he takes off running his crisp routes with no lull in his speed using his great hands and determination to get as many yards as possible. The guy is so motivated to be great. I see him catching 100 passes as well and getting his YPCA up from 9.0 to the 12-13 range this year.

    • getterdone says:

LOL, don’t WR’s usually take a big leap in year 2-3….He’ll be scary and more versatile/dependable than his bro Beckham Jr.!

      • Tim Knight says:

Yes but I don’t think a sophomore slump would ever happen with this guy the way he works. He’ll get better every year. I wouldn’t be negative on Beckham though, that guy is legit as well. He’s faster than Landry and has more down field ability while Landry is a guy who will find the soft spots in coverage and get chunk yards over and over to sustain our drives and control the game. When teams do pay more attention to him because he’s killing them all game then RT will just find the other open receivers and we’ll be like a machine.

  20. Rockphin says:

What I love most about Landry is he catches the ball with his hands so smoothly and then IMMEDIATELY get’s positive yards after the catch. The ball is secured and he is moving up field in a instant. He has very shifty hips. He just keeps rolling.

  21. Rockphin says:

Also what I love about Landry is when he sees the pass is going to someone else (he is not the option that time), He IMMEDIATELY starts blocking for the other WR.

    • Tim Knight says:

He’s a great football player. He was known for his blocking at LSU. He also had some great hits/blocks playing STs.

Remember when Wallace quit in the Jets game while defenders were hitting Williams, Landry comes from further away and starts trying to block guys to get them off of Williams while Asshole walks off. That told us a whole lot about the two of them and why one is the center piece of the offense and the other one is in Minnesota.

  22. Rockphin says:

I just watched that “wishbone” sack again and Ryan came up throwing his invisible penalty flag. LOL The whistle had blown when they pancaked him at the end. LOL

The Herculean Bull being a leader.

I love reading this. We haven’t done anything yet. It’s all about sustaining good defense through entire games and into the last quarter of the season and beyond. Suh gets it and this is EXACTLY what you want your leader on defense to say and do.

This guy has been everything he was advertised to be. I thought Son was guilty of hyperbolic statements in his praise of Suh and what he would mean to this team but I now realize he was dead on balls accurate, everything is different now that Suh is here.

  24. The Flying Pig says:

    Watch Suh on this play

  25. The Flying Pig says:

This sack is kind of violent

The flag was for holding in the OL…lol

I love the way Vernon is just nasty

  26. The Flying Pig says:

This is a good play by Atlanta…

  27. The Flying Pig says:

    Watch Mitchell manhandle this OG

  28. The Flying Pig says:

Suh is a monster with that snap count

  29. BoulderPhinfan says:

to be fair I’m gonna leave it locked. I’ve been saying for a few days that its gonna be locked today at noon. If you want any addition to your roster because its not 53 then put them in the blog today and I’ll add them for you.

    • Tim Knight says:

Okay cool. I still don’t know why it has to be locked today before the cut to 75. It gives everyone a better idea on who’s making the team. There will still be 22 cuts after that to get to 53. I think it’s too early.

  30. The Flying Pig says:

I thought Mitchell played good for us last year
And never really got much credit
But this year he is going to eat OLs alive

    • Tim Knight says:

He played NT in HOU and he plays what they call nose/shade in our 4-3. He is very quick and strong. Real good player.

You see why our OL struggled in camp with these guys.

lol can they win a game that matter first before this is money well spent. pretty sure i saw a team struggling with what is suppose to be a bad falcon team this year.

i get they hype it happens every year, but i will just sit back and wait.

  32. son of a son of a shula says:

Cool videos, they’re a lot fun to watch on here.

I told you – Suh is here everything is different now.

Even Ross sounds witty and chilled.

  33. steveccnv says:

Last yr in the AFC playoffs it seemed like the team that got the most YAC won the close games, lead by Edelman he was a beast. I see the same thing in Landry this yr.

  34. herdfan says:

I was getting the Game Day blog ready for Thursday and I see that CBS Sports is indicating our game will be live on NFL network rather than the Eagles/Jets game. My DirecTV schedule hasn’t changed. Has anyone else heard anything about our game being shown live on NFL network Thursday?

  35. finfanrob says:

If you can’t see it isn’t hype this yr I don’t know what to say.

lmao, it is the preseason. get as excited as you want, but the bottom line is it is still hype. nothing more

  36. steveccnv says:

The question before we went up against another team was, is the Dline this good or the Oline that bad? Anyone having trouble answering this one?

  37. BoulderPhinfan says:

the whole idea is to guess who’s gonna be on the team before any of the cuts. That’s more interesting and harder.

  38. BoulderPhinfan says:

After watching the last 3 preseason games I think Dallas thomas is gonna be ok at LG. If albert plays I feel confident this o-line could get us to playoffs.

    • Tim Knight says:

I think they OL will get better as the year goes on if they stay relatively healthy. It takes time for young players to develop and when you’re relying on multiple ones on one unit especially the OL which is about chemistry, you have to be patient. 2013 really fucked us and we had to overhaul it for the most part.

  39. Tim Knight says:

Boulder, actually I did do the 53 last night so I’m good. Just clarify for me that it’s 53 if you don’t mind.

  40. D says:

Re-watchung some games and so far one sack on Winston for sure on him but next hurry and next sack both in marpet, he us getting owned by Bryant of the bucs

  41. son of a son of a shula says:

Late in the game they were putting a back either James or Ajayi split out wide something we haven’t seen from the 1’s yet.

  42. The Flying Pig says:

    How Suh changes everything

  43. BoulderPhinfan says:

yes its 53. It looks like you kept more defensive players (27) than offensive (24). You just think we need more depth on defense?

    • BoulderPhinfan says:

ok after I typed that I was like 27 and 24 and 3 that’s 54. You have one too many on defense. LEt me know who you want out.

    • Tim Knight says:

27/23. I go by talent, not even steven. Also STs. On offense you usually dress just 7 OL and roll with your core skill guys. On defense you rotate many more DL and DBs. LBs are usually good STs coverage guys.

I kept an extra OL because of Albert. When he’s ready to go we’ll probably release one and go with 9.

  44. The Flying Pig says:

  45. D says:

I went back and watched the phins game on dvr and DT didn’t look awful a LT either but definitely looks better at OG. Pretty much everyone seemed off their game, even James. Turner still graded out worse by my observation but he is a work in progress. Pouncey looked pretty good aside from right after he came back in he looked like he was playing a little gingerly

  46. D says:

Man marpet is looking really bad in pass pro and run blockibg

  47. son of a son of a shula says:

Boulder, Tim has Douglas listed twice. 23-27

  48. The Flying Pig says:

Go look at that vine I posted at 3:07
the entire front 7 is behind the LOS

  49. BoulderPhinfan says:

a lot QBs are playing well this preseason. Did you guys just see the TD from hoyer to hopkins just now? pretty sweet.

  50. Tim Knight says:

Piggy, in the 3:07 video I only see 4 DL, no LBs in the picture.

  51. Rockphin says:

LOL if you count again, there are 9 dolphins players behind the LOS!

  52. Tim Knight says:

The video I see at 3:07 is just the 4 man front. Are you guys taking about another video?

  53. The Flying Pig says:

You are looking at the wrong video
I’m talking about the one where I say watch Mitchell manhandle at the top

  54. Rockphin says:

    Tim Knight says:
    August 30, 2015 at 4:39 pm

What video are we referring to? Suh is the 1st one across the LOS in the 3:07 video.

The one that says “Watch Mitchell manhandle this OG ” above it. He is the last D Lineman across the LOS and like 9 guys wind up behind the LOS

  55. Tim Knight says:

It sounds like our starting LB core will be:
    WOLB Jenkins
MLB Sheppard (good call Mike E)
    SOLB Misi

To me that’s the best 3 like the best 5 OL. McCain isn’t ready to be a starting OLB. He’ll be a hybrid defender in our front 7. He’s probably more aggressive than instinctive so you can’t have him making mistakes in coverage.

    • The Flying Pig says:

      I think that’s right

I’m guessing McCain is the next LB up
If Misi or Jenkins go down he will take their place and if Sheppard goes down they will move Misi inside

I also think there is a chance they cut Paysinger in favor of Vigil or Hull
      Hull played okay yesterday

      • Tim Knight says:

Very possible. Paysinger is a good STs player though and one of the reason we signed him. That’s why I kept 8 LBs including Vigil and Hull. They are going to play a lot on STs especially coverage units.

I did that over a 6th WR because I don’t see that guy ever playing unless we have injuries and are they so good we couldn’t find a guy of equal talent off the street?

Release of J.D. Walton shows Dolphins comfortable with Mike Pouncey health status and with Sam Brenner as backup center.

  60. Rockphin says:

NO, not just figuring it out, sometimes restating the obvious is acceptable.

I’ll say it again. MEGAN FOX IS SUPERHOT

  61. son of a son of a shula says:

Damn, I kept Walton over Brenner and I thought about switching it but didn’t.

  62. son of a son of a shula says:

    Mila > Megan , imo

  63. getterdone says:

Cutting JD Walton tells me that the coaches believe in their other OL pretty well, especially @ C & OG. Also means that Pouncey’s knee musta checked out ok.

Walton was a 16 game starter last season with the Giants, and he has I think over 50 NFL starts.
So thew youth movement is in force. Go Brenner!

    • Tim Knight says:

Walton also struggled and was part of the Giants problem. Same with us with Satele. They got overpowered a lot. That’s why Pouncey is back at center.

  64. getterdone says:

I kept Brenner over Walton. He’s younger and has a better anchor.

  65. Rockphin says:

Really TryPod? REALLY? What are you Siendfeld?

  66. getterdone says:

      • getterdone says:

Yes, I I also look forward to Tripp getting healthy. Vigil is flashing well as a UD rook, so I can’t wait to see how he develops in year 2 either.

      • steveccnv says:

Way to go out on a limb, Tim 😉

  71. Tim Knight says:

GD, I agree on the LBs. Tripp and Vigil have upside and Hull could be a STs demon. I like him as a LB he’s just undersized at 6-0 230.

  76. naplesfan2010 says:

t/y wyo … also wasn’t that thumb syndrome featured in the main girl character in the novel Even Cowgirls Get The Blues Sometimes

  77. Tim Knight says:

I can see Landry being top heavy as the focus of our ball control offense along with the backs and the running game. So Landry could have a 100 catch season where all the others fall in the 30-50 give or take range. The offense is setup to find the open guy. I think Landry and Cameron will exploit the spread field and RT is a good middle of the field passer. 5-20 all day and then boom, someone makes a big play. 🙂

  78. naplesfan2010 says:

Not to be disagreeable, but it seems very possible that Landry has fewer catches this year even though he is a better player because of all the talent surrounding him.
… although he should get more yards per catch …

    • steveccnv says:

That’s what I thought too, then I started watching the preseason and I don’t think so any longer, even though the 3 new comers haven’t really been a part of the offense in the preseason.

Out of every 10 passes he throws 3 should go Landry’s way, that should give him about 9 per game. If someone is hot they may get a little more action, but at the end of the day RT likes throwing short and Landry is his security blanket.

      • getterdone says:

Steve, I don’t think it’s a given that Tanny ‘just’ likes to throw short passes. That’s the way this offense is designed and only what his patchwork OL has allowed him.
Ryan likes to chuck it deep too, I’ve seen it. But he’s wisely not going to do it without knowing the play has a decent chance of success.

    • steveccnv says:

When he’s got time and an open target of course he’s going to throw deep, but he settles a lot on the short pass, which is a checkdown, not a design of the offense.

If you read my post last night where I compared him to Brady, making a positive play (short pass) is important, and more important than taking a risk somewhere else down the field, you’d realize I’m not bashing him.

I have no problem at all with the short passes he’s thrown in preseason, with the exception of the 3rd and long pass he threw short about 3 yrds downfield that had no chance of making a 1st down, when he had time to find someone else.

With that said, the only time it isn’t ok to throw short is on 3rd down and long, when you have time. This translates to I give up on this drive lets punt. If our D is as good as advertised in the preseason, by all means throw it short and punt (given the situation of course, so if we’re down 14 with 5 minutes to go it isn’t ok).

  79. naplesfan2010 says:

  84. getterdone says:

Steve, no I didn’t think you were bashing Tannehill. I’m in agreement, and I too hate to see a pass inside the 1st down marker on 3rd and long, but sometimes that’s all ya got.
On 3rd and long the Defense knows you’re throwing and they send a heavy rush package at ya.
Until our OL, TE’s & RB’s gwet better at picking up everyone and providing more time, then we’ll see this more than we care.
Give Tanny time, or any QB, then they become real dangerous down field.
I like that Tanny seems much more comfortable in year 2 of Lazor’s offense. He’s smooth, making usually good quick decisions as the game has slowed down for him.

    • steveccnv says:

I really notice how well RTs pocket presence is when Moore is in the game and gets sacked or hit while throwing, I think to myself RT would’ve gotten rid of it quicker 😛

I wouldn’t trade RT for anyone right now, not even Luck.

    Skins want to trade RGIII,

i saw that. even though there was all this screaming how bold snyder was for making the trade and what a commitment to winning he had unlike ross, that has to go down as one of the worst trades in football history for what they gave up for rgbust

    • steveccnv says:

And topped off by RGIII’s comment about him being the best QB in the NFL, even though he just said he has to think of himself in that manner to perform well. The perception around was he said he was the best QB, so they’ll continue to make him look like an ass tomorrow on all the talk radio shows.

I can’t believe they cut Robinson:

The #Dolphins have made initial roster cuts tonight. TE Gerrell Robinson and C J.D. Walton are among the notable releases.

  91. naplesfan2010 says:

    DT Calvin Barnett

    G Bryant Browning

    WR LaRon Byrd

    WR Kevin Cone

    DE Ray Drew

    WR Tyler McDonald

    DE Kendall Montgomery

    TE Gerell Robinson

    CB Sammy Seamster

    S Phillip Thomas

    C/G J.D. Walton

    • getterdone says:

So much for the Byrd fans…lol
I had Gerell Robinson over Stoneburner, but knew I was taking a risk, as he’s light in the britches for a TE @ 220.

  92. naplesfan2010 says:

I am surprised they cut Robinson and Thomas. I thought Thomas was a hitting machine and Robinson had serious speed down the seam.

  93. naplesfan2010 says:

That is 11 cuts. If we had 90, then they have to cut 4 more right?

  94. BoulderPhinfan says:

    yes I had stoneburner.

  95. steveccnv says:

Miami Dolphins roster cuts, these 11 get us down to 77, 2 more to go.

    WR Kevin Cone

    TE Gerell Robinson

I had bad problems with my TV and internet last night, missed most of the 2nd half and didnt get back on till this morning…
Way up here we got Walloped by a torrential storm (2.30in) and then another 2.2 just this evening.

  97. herdfan says:

I hate this part of the preseason. For these guys getting cut, it may be the end of their NFL dream. Some might go to another team, or end up on a practice squad, but there’s only so many spots to go around. Kind of sad.

    • steveccnv says:

At least they can say they were on a camp roster. The ones that don’t get picked up by another team or put on a practice squad just have to work harder, look at Cam Wake, it isn’t over until they give up. You’re defined by what you do after failure, not before, and it’s only failure if you give up.

  98. naplesfan2010 says:

We still have two extra kickers and C Jones and Damarr Aultman at WR and Gillislee @ RB who seem superfluous. I hate losing Gills as he has talent.

  99. BoulderPhinfan says:

franks hasn’t been cut. interesting. I think they think he’ll get pouched right away. They like franks.

  100. getterdone says:

Franks I gambled on in the roster picks.
    Frankie goes to Miami!

  101. Tim Knight says:

Remember TEs are required to do more than just be receivers and make one big play in the PS. They serve as TE, H-Back and FB and then STs if you’re a #3. If you’re lacking in multiple areas in those responsibilities you’re not worthy of the 53. What Robinson is now going to be the focus of the offense? LOL

    • naplesfan2010 says:

He reminded me of David Martin who helped us get to the playoffs.

      • Tim Knight says:

He’ll never see the field with Cameron and Sims. Cameron is better than Martin was and Sims is a solid traditional TE. Our offense is more based off the WR and RB anyway.

I like Franks, you like Franks, they like Franks…

me too, but i usually like my Franks really really dark

  103. finfanrob says:

well looks like parts of erika are here. she sure is loud and all wet.

  104. Tim Knight says:

LOL @ Boulder on Home’s rant. Nah I’ll take Tannehill again. 🙂

  105. naplesfan2010 says:

Tim Do you really think we will only play two TEs the whole year?; even without injuries we would need to sub some time or other. I think Semisch is intriguing at 6’8 for a Red Zone jump ball target, but he is raw and could go on the PS without much risk of getting poached.

    Weeeeee innuendos. 🙄

if you say so. cant help your perverted mind. i just mean a loud thunderstorm.

  107. herdfan says:

This made me laugh. Totally non football related.

  108. olddolphan says:

SteveCCNV; Actualy, the Thursday game DOES have plenty of relevance to the team, ESPECIALLY in the case of punting and placekicking jobs, as well as quite a few other jobs on the team that are still up for grabs. And I DO HOPE the first teamers play at least one or two series for the benefit of season ticket holders who are forced to pay regular season prices for exhibition contests. Personally, I won’t be there. In fact I’ve only been to ONE exhibition game since 1989.

  109. Tim Knight says:

Naples, Robinson is not a TE, he’s a receiver only. Don’t need him. We underrate what TEs have to do in this league.

  110. Tim Knight says:

GD, maybe PS for Robinson at some point but we also allowed him enough time to find work elsewhere. He was cut before the 75 deadline so he’s not high on our radar.

  111. son of a son of a shula says:

LOL @ Herd’s video, Mrs. son and I both lol’d

  112. getterdone says:

    Alain Poupart @apoupartFins
Former @MiamiDolphins RB Daniel Thomas released by the Bears.

  113. Try Pod says:

Videos like that make me so uncomfortable, I can’t watch them. My wife laughs at the stuff I get squeamish about. Just some things.. Lol
