Game Wrap Up: Jests @ Dolphins (London)

PrawnSuicide

Wait Prawny Wait!!! Don’t do it….we need a wrap up…

Thankfully I convinced this shellfish to hold off his NFL depression to give us a wrap up…

Oh…what’s that about the game?   Um…yeah probably not going to make anyone feel better to review it…but…

SuhAssumingPosition

In this pic, Prawny points out to us that the defense immediately assumed the position once again

The Dolphins gave up 207 yards on the ground in the game.  166 of those years were a career high by Chris Ivory, who plowed through defenders like Suh all game for extra yardage.  I don’t know how many yards after contact Ivory had….probably a ton.

For the 4th time this season (every game) the opposing team went up early in the 1st quarter.  The Dolphins have been down at least 2 scores from the start of the game in every game this season.

WakeLostinSun

And it’s not just the run defense.  There is no pressure on the QB consistently.  Some people question whether Wake even suited up…but he did…he just got lost in the sun

The Dolphins did not have a sack on Sunday.  They have 1 sack this year.

PrawnstabsMarshal

The Dolphins could not stop Brandon Marshall either.  Marshall had 128 yards on 7 catches.  He caught a 58 yard pass early which caused most of us to pound our head into the wall.

The Little Prawn has a proposed solution which he demonstrates in this pic.

I HATE YOU BRANDON MARSHALL!!!

Stillsshowsup

Moving on to the offense, it wasn’t good either.  Just 226 yards total offense.  The Dolphins avoided any major turnovers in the first half of the game but they didn’t move the ball at all.

The Dolphins game plan is basically to make sure they get short yards on one of the two first downs, zero yardage on another of the first two downs, then throw beneath the first down marker and hope a receiver breaks a tackle.  Sometimes it works…but its hard to string together a touchdown drive when this is the plan.  As Dan Fouts pointed out all game – you are asking your receivers to do a lot!

The good news is that we finally used Kenny Stills.  Who caught five passes for 81 yards and a touchdown.  Stills really can’t be blamed for any of the offensive woes this season.  The team is just not using him.  When they finally targeted him on Sunday it paid off.

PrawnStonebruner

And this guy caught another Touchdown!  That’s 2 for Stoneburner.  Prawny loves his name!

LandryPassion

One guy that always plays hard is Jarvis Landry.  Look at him leap says Prawny!  Landry lead the team in special teams yardage, was 2nd in receiving yards and lead the team in rushing yards.

The fact that Landry lead the team in rushing yards is not a good thing.  The fact that he did it on 2 carries is even worse.  The fact that Miller had only 7 carries is enough to drive any Dolfan crazy.  The running game has been horrible this year.  The Dolphins take themselves out of games early but even in the redzone late in the 4th quarter, they refuse to run the ball.

TannyinLondon

Speaking of letdowns in the 4th quarter…for a little while it seemed like the Jests and the officials were opening the door for the Dolphins to steal a game where they were thoroughly dominated.  But Tannehill’s touch in the redzone was as awkward as a priest in a playground.  It wasn’t happening.

Tanny was sacked three times and under a lot of pressure all game.  He finished completing 19 passes on 44 attempts for 198 yards.  He had two touchdowns and two interceptions.  Those two interceptions were in the redzone.

Melancholyjoe

It was enough to make Philbin’s blood boil…well maybe not.

WokeupforBS

I feel the same way Coach!  The good news is we can all sleep in next week.

BeachedDolphins 1-3

I guess we will see what happens this week…

Congrats to this FO and coaching staff. You’ve done it. You’ve successfully ripped our hearts out.

I guess this week we will find who is really a fan and who isn’t. It’s pretty clear some enjoyed the loss yesterday almost if they were happy. That’s not a fan. Through thick and thin a fan supports their team.

Huh, two posts at 4:47 am? Who would have thought that!

  4. Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

“In this pic, Prawny points out to us that the defense immediately assumed the position once again”- LMFAO!

  5. How exactly can an NFL player NOT be motivated to go out and play their best. Seriously, if you’re an NFL player and you’re not motivated to play, please don’t blame it on your coaches. You’re a fucking idiot. If you can’t be motivated to go out and play your best every game then you shouldn’t be playing the game.

  6. Suh in his presser yesterday “next question, next question, next question”. FUUUUUUCCCKKKK him!! “I don’t have any emotion”. How the fuck can you not have any emotion. I sent him a Tweet that said “Character. Look up the definition”. The guy lacks character AND integrity. Didn’t say he doesn’t have ANY but he sure as hell doesn’t have enough.

  7. New Age's avatar New Age says:

Suh has been left out to dry by an incompetent DC in a sea of incompetent coaches. Which coach has made anyone here better than they were before? They can’t be fired fast enough.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

      I agree

I’m really don’t want to engage in too much criticism of newcomers to this team while this is our coaching staff

  8. herdfan's avatar herdfan says:

Do you think we could get this guy for O Coordinator? At least O Line Coach?

  9. TryPod's avatar Try Pod says:

    From MMQB:
    5. I think, for $114 million, Ndamukong Suh could make more of an effort to help the Dolphins get out of the rut, both on an off the field. On: According to Pro Football Focus, he’s been on the field for 129 passing downs, and gotten zero sacks and one quarterback hit in four games. He is playing the run well (despite Chris Ivory mugging him Sunday in London for a 17-yard gain). Off: No interest post-game in defending his coaches or providing any public leadership at a time of crisis for his team. Just a bad look. You can say, “He’s not getting paid to be a cheerleader.” And he isn’t. But there are times when you’ve got to step up and be accountable and support your team, and Suh didn’t do much of that yesterday.

  10. olddolphan's avatar olddolphan says:

LET ME GET this straight. A REAL DOLPHIN FAN will support his team when it makes crappy decisions and hires the wrong people to do the job. AND A POOR FAN will criticize the Dolphins when they make these mistakes because the “POOR FAN” wants Miami to GET BETTER. THIS line of reasoning could only come from a JETSFAN!!

  11. TryPod's avatar Try Pod says:

I say we wait and hire Charlie Strong when he gets fired from Texas.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Think Texas is gonna fire him after 2 years?
He did well at Louisville but he is struggling inTexas
He had a great 2015 recriting class – I think Texas might want to stick with him through the growing pains

      • TryPod's avatar Try Pod says:

I think the boosters at Texas wanted to get rid of him the day he was hired- They’ve already ridded themselves of the AD that hired him. He is being out recruited in the state already by lesser programs. He was never going to get a fair shake there. I think he is going to be free by the end of the season.

  12. herdfan's avatar herdfan says:

I do think a LOT of the problems we have are coaching related. Players we have let go do well on other teams. Players that have played well elsewhere don’t do a lot after we get them. What could it possibly be? So if that’s the case, I’m sure the players are more frustrated than we are. I’d say it’s safe to say most of us have had a boss or a co worker, they keep doing the same stupid shit all the time and it doesn’t work out and everyone in the group suffers because of it. Kind of the same thing. It wears you down.

  13. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

You don’t really bring in players to change the culture of the team
you bring in coaches for that

  14. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Philbin says the team made adjustments last week

    I didn’t see any adjustments
it looked like the same offense to me

After 2 weeks when the Broncos were having problem scoring they moved Manning into a pistol formation

We would never do anything like that with these coaches
Lazor’s offense looks the same as it did last season – even with the new personell
    I don;t see anything different

  15. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

If the Dolphins fire Philbin and staff now
I have no idea what they would do about the vacant positions
Who would be the interim coach?

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

This stat highlights the problem with our coaching staff

the Patriots and Giants both planned to get the ball out early
and both beat a suspect Bills pass defense
the Dolphins did the same thing they always do

Boulder mentioned it the week before the Bills game
      its not just hindsight

Nice effort, this team doesn’t deserve it. They really don’t. Coaching sucks, granted, but these players smell like Limburger cheese. No heart, except for Jarvis Landry.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

      Limburger is offended

don;t forget Stoneburner who is making his name int he NFL
I thought Still played well too

      Landry
      Stills
      Stoneburner

those are pretty much the positives from an individual perspective

I think we need more Devante Parker on the field ASAP
and more deep and deep/middle passing
      especially on 1st down

On 2nd thought — my game ball goes to all you great guys who run this site.

1,106 comments on the board yesterday. Is that a one-day record?

  25. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I checked stats for comments but I don;t see any

the record for views is the Jax Game 2 weeks ago on 9/20

  26. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Still think that Ross is a loyal guy not prone to quick and drastic moves, but based on the start still thinking someone gets fired this week. Would be different except for going into the bye week……some head is going to roll.

Philbin would be the big head to put on the block, but Ross does seem to like him. I put his chances at running the team next game at 50/50.

If not him, Coyle would be the next in line. The D has gotten worse while playing against less than stellar Os.

Next up would be a scapegoat (even if a deserved one), DL coach Kevin Williams. How can all that talent perform so badly. Hey — Suh might be the next Haynesworth and the real cause, but not like he is getting cut.

  27. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

What’s the point of firing only Coyle? This team knew they were playing for their HC’s job, and this is the way they said we don’t really care Joe, sorry. Lazor sucks, the entire coaching staff, top to bottom needs to be ousted.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I guess its easier to replace just a DC

I think Philbin has already expressed confidence in Coyle
I don’t think he wants to fire him

I think the time is right to fire the entire coaching staff
If I was Ross I would do that and then bring in a no-name interim coach for the final 12 games of the season
Somebody might get an opportunity to coach int he NFL that wasn’t available to them otherwise

      Lets see what happens

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Not saying what I would do — simply how it might play out. And a key part of that is getting in Ross’ mind. He is a loyal guy. For instance, he might have said “do this this season and you keep your job.” Season is not over yet. So could be he wants to keep his word.

  28. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

    Great site, congrats,
I wonder how many teams have won a game when they are outrushed by 158 yards? and only had the ball on offense for 1/3 of the game?

It’s not the players it’s the scheme, get rid of Lazor and get an OC that operates a run first offense, we need a back like avery, carlos rodgers or lacy a big 225lbs plus back, we need a fullback and the QB to operate from under center for the most part and we need to impose our will upon Defenses.

the lack of a rush affects the other side of the ball as well, we lose time of possession which leaves the D on the field way too long and we seem to always be playing catch up which affects moral in a no win situation.

the offense we run doesn’t work in the NFL

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

Both sides of the ball stink. I don’t think it has been the O’s fault why the D is struggling. We are giving up leads early in every game, long before the D has been tired out by losing the TOP battle. In fact the D’s failure to stop the opponents early has had a worse effect on our offense because it has forced our O to abandon the run too early and we have become one dimensional as we have faced double digit leads during the first half of every game we have played this year.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I would probably say the offense we run leaves little margin for error – so we are almost in agreement

      it can work
but you need to score points early and often and we don’t

I don’t think not scoring is exclusively a lack of rush offense and TOP of possession
I just think we have problems moving the ball downfield b/c of all the short passing

I was surprised to hear Tanny before the game talk about the failure to convert 3rd downs. I think the real is that we need so many 3rd downs to score

If we were a running grind out at offense – its proven to work in the NFL, even in this era. So I don’t disagree, I just think the options are a little broader

I do think teams can win by passing 60% of the time or more

  29. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

In a sense we are lucky

usually a move like firing a head coach come late in the season
but losing the 2 home games against your 2 lesser division rivals int he first 4 games of the season might prompt the earlier move

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

Or Ross could leave Philbin in place for 12 more weeks of miserable pain of watching this team and coaching staff go through it’s death throes.

    • ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

Do you just hire an interim coach?
what kind of message does that send to any new highly qualified replacement? and who is out there at this time is to be a potential candidate,

i would think we give philbin the full year and replace him on black monday

      • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

You just hire a coach and call him interim if he doesn;t impress in the next 12 games
Philbin is basically the walking dead out there. Not doing anything also sends a message to the team

Keeping Philbin is probably a worse message than hiring an interim coach

I doubt we hire a big name coach if we fire Philbin Now
        maybe int he offseason

I’m not sure a big name is the way to go anyway
I just don;t think these coaches are changing after the BYE week

  30. herdfan's avatar herdfan says:

I would like to see an all new staff but it’s not realistic in the middle of the season. So, do you keep Philbin but force new coordinators on him and get rid of Coye and Lazor? Do you fire Joe and keep the same coordinators who have sucked?

I think they need some energy, a jump up and down, yell in your face kind of coach. You either need players that are like that or coaches. I don’t think we have either. I don’t really see Philbin talking to ANYONE on the sideline during a game, much less appearing to be the slightest bit upset at what is happening right in front of him. I saw Sean Payton talking to Drew Brees last night, they were looking at photos or something and discussing things, maybe like some adjustment that could be made. Don’t think I’ve ever seen anything like that on our sideline. Just a queasy look of confusion.

  31. getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

Oh and our old asst coach is now 4-0 as a 1st time Head Coach. He’s undefeated as a HC….
Kudos to the Mighty Quinn. Wish you were still here! ;(

  32. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I know TryPod has mentioned he thought it might be better to leave Philbin in place, to show that we are loyal to our HC, so that when we search for anew HC, they feel like it wouldn’t be a mistake to come here. Anyone else feel that way?

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I don;t think its a crazy point of view

but there is enough talk of firing philbin now publicly to offset any negative perception of coaching candidates IMO

Its tough to watch these guys do the same thing every week and think it will lead to different results – I may be speaking from just a fan’s perspective and not looking at the big picture – but this is painful…I’m actually throwing stuff at my TV before they snap the ball

    • TryPod's avatar Try Pod says:

I’ve modified my thoughts on that- I may have over thought it. But who are you going to get in the middle of the season? All potential replacements are tied up with their current teams’ season.

      • TryPod's avatar Try Pod says:

But my bigger point was on whether firing the coach before his team was eliminated from playoff contention would hurt our ability to attract coaching candidates, particularly those who are the most wanted.

  33. herdfan's avatar herdfan says:

I don’t think anyone can look at this team and not understand why someone is being fired.

  34. getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

Besides allowing 425 yards on Defense we also allowed the Jests 15 more minutes in TOP, wow that’s a whole Quarter. This is with them losing 163 yards on 14 penalties.

On our offense were were 0-12 on 3rd down.

The score wasn’t anything even near or indicative of how bad an ass whooping & how badly schemed & sleep walking this team really played.

Never seen such a huge disparity….even when the Colts were sucking for Luck they weren’t this bad….SMH!

  35. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

The coaching staff is in trouble no doubt. But I still don’t get the notion they don’t know how to use Suh. He’s a DT, there are only so many things you can do in a 4-3 at the position. They’ve also spelled Wake and Vernon with Shelby and Fede to keep them fresh and still they get no pressure on the QB. I don’t get it.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

the scheme they used is the same thing they used last season
      it generated pressure
      I’m perplexed
I don;t think its a lack of effort by Suh or the DL

      Something is just wrong

I’m a little tired of hearing Albert Haynesworth
people don;t understand how bad he was
After signing his big contract he refused to practice with the team then failed physicals when he did report

    ___________________________________________________
Philbin is in his 4th year and the team’s play has been an embarrasment this season. I think firing Philbin now has no real impact on any potential candidate for next year. This happens all the time in the NFL and coaches continue to take the vacancies when they open up. What matters more is what is the talent base? What type of owner does the team have? And what kind of lifestyle does the area offer for the candidate’s family?

    • ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

you may be right, but i would fire all those responsible for our scheme, is our offensive scheme put in by philbin or lazor? if we put lazor in charge it would seem we are digging a deeper hole

  37. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

And you guys know I can’t help but talk about Wednesday’s NL Wildcard game.

It is the 97-game winner Cubs against the Bucs, who won 98. The last time there was ANY playoff matchup featuring two teams with that many combined wins was the 2009 ALCS (103-win Yankees vs. 97-win Angels)…….and it is a frick’n wildcard game.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Should be a great game. 2 excellent teams.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Unfortunately think mine is going to lose. Cole has to pitch a gem and the Buc hitters need to get Ariretta’s pitch count up. Scoreless going into the eighth would be a beautiful thing.

  38. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

    Ken,
when your offense is on the field it stands to reason that their offense cant score against your defense, the problem is our offense cant control the clock, we have lost every time of possession battle by a big margin. 38 mins to 22 mins is ridiculous!

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

Not disagreeing that this is a problem but the D is faltering in the first minutes of the game as well. Last 2 weeks the first 2 possessions they are giving up scores. I don’t the think the play of the offense has impacted the D’s poor play early in the game. Both sides are struggling independent of one another. If anything I think being down early has impacted the offense more making them more one dimensional, forcing the O to pass more which exposes our poor OL and plays to our weakness. Bottom line is both units are struggling.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

2 way street Rob. Yesterday, the defense dictated how bad the team was going to be, by allowing the Jets to march down the field run after run, after play action after run. Defense had no answer, and the game started with this rotten defense. The offense did the team no favors either by not being able to sustain a drive. We don’t run the damn football, it’s absurd.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

The offense has been awful. The defense has been bad too but actually kept the team in games a couple of times believe it or not. The Jets were handing us the game and we couldn’t score. Very depressing.

  39. getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

This is from May 2015 on NFL.com:

Jim Schwartz has landed another job in the NFL, but it won’t be as a coach.

Schwartz will serve as a consultant to the league’s officiating department for the 2015 season, a league official confirmed with NFL Media on Monday. Fox Sports reported the news first and according to a source, Schwartz will provide a coach’s perspective with some of the decisions made by the officiating office.

Schwartz spent last season as the defensive coordinator of the Buffalo Bills, leading the unit to a No. 4 ranking in the NFL. He was let go when Rex Ryan replaced Doug Marrone as head coach. Prior to his stint in Buffalo, Schwartz spent five seasons as the head coach of the Detroit Lions.

Schwartz drew consideration for several defensive coordinator positions, but did not find a new job. The job with the league should serve as something of a pit stop for the coach, who should be back in the mix for coordinator and head-coach openings next offseason.

In the meantime, he’ll collect a pay check, re-charge his battery and get involved with the game from a different perspective. There are worse fates.

I think the offense is worse than the Defense as well
One reason is that I think we built to be finesse and high powered on offense and the whole things comes apart when we are not.

So far this season we are only averaging a little over 16 pts a game
which is the worse year yet

but since Philbin’s been here we’ve only been at about 20 points a game

Last year was the highest with about 24 points

the reality is, Philbin is not getting close to his vision of this team

I said it many times before the Buffalo game. We need to throw qucik passes and move the pocket when we want the play to develop a little. It helps both with nullifying their pass rush and with winding their front 4. Laxor for whatever reason wont commit to hurry up, he wont commit to moving the pocket and he seems to be trying to force deep ball plays against team with defensive lines that give ALL offensive lines hell, not to mention ours which is weak.

Everything in each of thse game has constantly pointed to the coordinators doing a shitty job. I am sure that player motivation isn’t at an all time high, and i admit i believe you shouldn’t have to coddle/motivate full grown men to do their jobs as professionals, but i still feel a change of guard fixes this.

Issue with change of guard is i could see them firing the HC and having an interm step in. Its not ideal but it cant be much worse than it is right now. That still leaves the shitty OC/DC’s in their spots and changing all 3 would be them just giving up on the season, which then you have to ask yourself why if you are giving up on the season dont oyu just keep rolling with the shit you have and rebooting next year at an easier time with better options for replacement.

Not sure what the best option would be but i kinda would like to see Ross shit can these guys right now. If you promote from within, i think the only person deserving of the interm position would be Rizzi, as his teams havent looked bad. Maybe promote a couple of sub coords to OC/DC and just run with a short staff/double duty kinda scenario, until a better option becomes available.

The glaring problem with promoting an interim HC from within, is that Philbin has surrounded himself with mostly all 1st time coaches at their current level, just like himself.
Coyle was a 1st time DC, same as Lazor, same as many of the position coaches.

No wonder this is so flawed….you can’t have an ALL Rookie coaching staff in the NFL.

Stanger, usually interm coaches dont do any personnel l changes. They usually work with a staff thats left to them, and thats a good thing that would be a helluva pressure for a new guy to have to choose it. I sure hope though that they dont force Lazor and Coyle on him to deal with and they do make changes there too. At this point it doesnt really matter and it actually gives him a chance to show what he can do without the tard patrol fucking things up for him.
