And Lady Liberty loved what Landry did with the play. It didn’t look like a touchdown but Landry made it one.
Let’s face it: Even though the Dolphins were bad in their first 4 games, Landry was great. He has been our MVP this season.
Another consistent performer this year: Rishard Matthews. Matthews caught 6 passes for 85 yards on Sunday including a deep one, kind of, for 24 yards.
Matthews is having a pretty good season this year. He has 23 catches and almost 400 yards. That chemistry with Tanny is really paying off.
Matthews started vs Tennessee.
But passing stats were not really the story…something else was…

I think its called “the trotting game”.
Whatever it is we did it for 180 yards on Sunday. Lamar Miller had 113 yards trotting and a touchdown. He did that on 19 carries which is almost 6 yards a carry.
19 carries – are you crazy!!! Why would anyone give a running back more than 12 carries. Coach Campbell must be out of his mind. What’s next? 20! Maybe 21! Then possibly the NFL record…which I’m guessing is 22 carries.
The other story – SACKS. I remember what you call those things and they are delicious.
In this pic, Lady Liberty oils the ball right before Cameron Wake sacks Marcus Mariotta. The sack caused a fumble which we recovered.
Wake had 4 sacks…4!!!!!
The Dolphins had 6 sacks on the day. That is after only acquiring 1 sack in the first 4 games. Vernon had 1 sack on the day. Lady Liberty tried to oil that ball too but the QB went down so quick…
The Titans gained 299 yards on the day and only 63 yards on the ground on 18 trotting attempts.
And the Defense created turnovers too!
Rashad Jones had a pick 6. The play was a huge play early in the 3rd quarter which you can tell by Lady Liberty’s celebration. After the score the Dolphins lead the game 24-3. By that time we were in the driver’s seat.
The Titans would make a push…but it would not last to long.

He is having a Pro Bowl caliber year for sure. His sure tackling and guided missle like hits are exactly that this D needs in the seconday. Let ‘s hope for a similar performance from this team at the Fest this Sunday.

Good post game Piggy! I agree, much of our success is the fast start, more physical play. And of course the return of the ‘trotting’ game. Landry and perhaps Grimes were the two I saw during the ‘extended 4 game preseason’ who seemed to have any intensity about them.
I’ve thought about this for a few weeks. Philbin was a quiet, cerebral type guy. A lot of our players seem to be the same way, quiet. I think you need some intensity either in the coach or some players to get going, pumped up at game time. I’m thinking the loud mouthed, jumping up and down Joey Porter types. I don’t think we have players like that anymore and Philbin certainly wasn’t that way. I think it’s why it took a half to get going in games. Coach Campbell is that spark, the in your face energy that’s been missing and we saw a fast start yesterday.
I sure hope the coaching staff can keep getting the guys to play like this. There’s still plenty to improve on from coaches and players alike.
The defensive scheme still leaves too many wide open receivers.

For all the times you hear how smart Philbin is and for all the times we heard him say, “it’s just football, football is easy” why the hell was running the ball or a balanced attack such a mystery to him?
pundits criticizing Dolphins for “suddenly playing with passion”… saying it’s not up to the coach. I get what they are saying…
… but the coach controls the day to day activity… and that activity CAN “kill spirit”. In any kind of coaching/teaching (whether a classroom, a band, or an athletic team), the cardinal rule is: “don’t break their spirit.” Philbin lost the team because they didn’t believe in him. They may be professional players but they have the SAME emotional needs/responses as the rest of us slobs.

Miami had six sacks (six times as many as they had in the previous four games combined), ran the ball better than it had all season, swarmed around Marcus Mariota menacingly and got a verbal salvo from Tennessee coach Ken Whisenhunt for, in his view, purposely trying to hurt Mariota when defensive end Olivier Vernon hit the rookie QB low. And, in general, Miami finally looked like the team that Ross felt he paid for, even with the biggest star, Ndamukong Suh, still playing just a supporting role.
When I thought was great about Campbell’s postgame talk to his team was that he recognized the practice-squad players and the backups whose job he has made it to give the starters a very tough week of preparation. The biggest star Sunday was defensive end Cam Wake. It’s hard to get four sacks in a month. Wake got four sacks in the first half, and he and Vernon ratcheted up the heat on Mariota. After the game I asked Wake about what the past week with a new coach was like—and how that translated to Sunday’s blowout.
“One word I’d use to describe it: fun,” said Wake. “We’re running, we’re hitting, we’re playing with enthusiasm, and we’re carrying that enthusiasm over from the practices to today at the game. We had a great week of practice. I think Dan’s a guy we have respect for because he’s played the game, and he’s played it recently. He knows how players feel. He knows how practice makes players feel. The respect is there for him, because he’s got such passion for the game.”
The Dolphins played with a fervor Sunday unlike they showed for much of the season’s first four games under Joe Philbin. If you don’t play with consistent abandon under Campbell, he’s likely to yank you. It’s too soon to judge any player in the system yet—and so we won’t judge Wake or Ndamukong Suh on either end of the performance scale after one game—but Campbell will be judging.
“We’re five or six games into the season,” said Wake. (They’re 2-3, actually.) “People made a big deal of how far we were behind in the last couple of weeks, but quite literally anything can happen the rest of the year. Tennessee is not a good team right now, to be sure. So Miami might have won this game with anyone coaching. But Campbell’s influence showed up in the intensity of the play. Few teams will be more intriguing than Miami for the next couple of months.
The Titans were playing some of the best defense in the league leading up to yesterday.

Well, that was a lot more fun to watch. Football is a funny game. Have to ride the fine line between reckless and precise. I don’t think Campbell is the long term answer to what we need, but it will make this season more fun to watch and at least he seems to be able to motivate the players. I was done with watching Philbin’s guys sleepwalk through any more games.

I think that’s a good assessment. I am older than every player in every pro sport at this point- I dare say my analogies are not always relevant to 30 or younger people.

I agree with you SB, i was seeing something similar, but more early in the game than late. I saw that we had more success but at least with the DT’s , first few drives it looked a lot like how Coyle was using them, and with the CB’s they still seems to play pretty off their receivers. The use of the DE’s and running more twists and stunts seemed improved, especially as the game went, but i think Wakes success was more strongly due to straight up being a matchup nightmare for their RT and them not doing a lot to adjust their scheme to help him. Especially their first drive i was like oh man he hasn’t swapped things up much at all, and then he seemed to make some modifications that got more pressure. Overall i think he adjusted it as he went and he got better as the game progressed, but i was nervous on the first couple of drives.
I would like to see them go more press, or shallow man coverage in the secondary. We did use the safeties well, and overall the LB’s were in particular used very well i think.
Our defense is more about effort than scheme. We also play one corner man up and the other off man quite a bit. I saw that about 50% of the time. Grimes didn’t look 100% and I think the Titans exploited that but Grimes is also a playmaker and a warrior. Also losing Br. McCain didn’t help. I also feel Sheppard is limited as a MLB and Aikens is still learning on the job. Our depth at DB is very young and inexperienced. So we don’t have the perfect situation on defense either, but they should be solid most of the time and very good here and there.
Effort plays a part. But the problems on defense are there no matter who is in the secondary. Too many receivers are running wide open and free especially on 3rd on longs. That’s scheme. We aren’t versatile or adaptable and that’s why we struggle against teams that play ball control/defense, especially if our offense isn’t clicking.
I do think despite the fact i think we outclassed Tenn. tht game would not have been possible under the former regime. We would have had another embarrassing game win or lose and would only have been lucky to eek out a win. This was convincing and inspiring. Im not sure how success carries over to the next game or in particular how it manifests against teams like Buffalo/Pats but i can say i dont feel that any game we play from this point forward im going to be worried we are an embarrassment, and that in itself is an improvement.

We need a playmaker at LB. Someone who can tackle, cover, and make things happen. We don’t have that right now, although Jenkins is working towards that.
Jenkins is very active and Misi is very physical. We could definitely use a stud though. It’s hard to have excellent players everywhere though.

SB7, you don’t think talent and lack of experience with some guys has anything to do with guys getting open? The Titans also have some really good young WRs.
Our scheme is designed not to give up long TD passes and hope along the way our defensive front can wreck a play or we get a turnover. We’re not the only team who plays defense like this.
I still wonder what schemes some of you are looking for? I’ve seen us mix it up plenty and use different alignments. I think every time we allow a play, the first thing many people think is wrong scheme. If that play to Landry for the TD got blown up in the backfield, I guarantee there would have been people here saying dumb call by Lazor. Instead it was a great call. LOL
I already said it had something to do with it but when you see the same thing for 3.25 seasons no matter the personnel , when does scheme get looked at?
What scheme would you suggest? A 3-4? Completely change to more press coverage? Just remember, if you don’t have corners who really excel at that, expect more 50+ yard TDs allowed.
I haven’t re watched the game yet, but it seemed like Tanny was forcing the ball to Cameron pretty often.
On the first pick RT hit him right in the hands but the defender also got his hands in there to break it up and it deflected to the DB behind them. It wasn’t a bad throw. The 2nd INT was pure communication, Cameron cut inside and RT threw outside. There was also almost another pick where Miller cut outside and RT expected him to turn the other way and just loft it to him. It fell short of the defender being able to pick it.
The most impressive part of yesterday’s game was the way the Fins offense started.
They put the ball in the RB hand in 4 straight plays to start the game (1 pass, 3 runs…1st two plays were run plays). That set the tempo early on for the OL to work the Titans DL. Fins finished the game with 30 non-QB rush attempts. 11 first downs on rushing attempts. They also finally emphasized both TE in their attack which is something that should happen more often in this era of the open TE around the NFL.

Jonas gray got as many carries as Miller normally would have.
you can add Chuck Pagano to the list of possible HC candidates for next season for the Dolphins if he doesn’t guide the colts to SB. I’m not sure we would want him after his big blunder. I heard people at PT talking about how pee wee football coaches would not make a stupid call as he did last night. I still can’t believe it.
Mike, I want a playmaker but I’d be happy with just solid at this point. I can’t be too greedy after a 38-10 victory.
I hear ya. Can’t really argue that, although I think Misi was solid at times last year, but he was far from a playmaker. It’s hard to really remember him making a big play, and Sheppard and Vigil aren’t good enough either.
I think more than anything its what we are missing from this team especially if we want to be top tier.

Yes, but notice the run plays werent pussy side to side runs, they wre decisive north south runs, setting up the sweeps, it was all in all a better game plan both for and against the run, more physical, more aggressive.
Tanny had ups and downs. Some decent passes, some really bad ones. He was off on the route twice, and at least one of them was for sure him that was wrong. the RB one, could have been milled because it looks like it was designed to be a sit down in the middle, but even that one could have been a read/react where miller read the MLB sitting in that zone and ran his alternate. Tanny either way horribly read both those plays because the defensive players were in the spots to defend, one wound up being a pick and the other pretty easily could have been. That roll out when cloe to the redzone which ended up being a TD pass is what i have been calling for all year and was one of the times i confirmed Lazor was not the designer of those plays lol, Lazor would have thrown a back-corner fade. The whole game plan on offense was so dramatically different, Lazor may have called the plays but Saunders most definitely left a strong mark on both the design but the situation calls themselves.
I think Dan basically told lazor run the ball or I’m gonna beat the crap outta you 🙂
How do you know which way the route was suppose to go, that’s pure speculation. We should just chalk it up to they need to get on the same page. I would always give the benefit of the doubt to the QB in those situations because they have to know everything, not just what a TE or RB needs to do. But it could have been one was on him and the other on the receiver but I don’t know how we would know that.
I agree with you that Lazor was told to alter his offense and mix it up more and use some power formations instead of running out of shotgun every fucking time. LOL

BTW the fourth quarter 97 yard drive that tanny had was really the nail in the coffin. The long pass to Stills was right on the money. We need more of that tanny to show up the rest of year.
I thought our zone defense was was getting killed by Delaney Walker. He caught so many passes sitting down in the empty space in that zone. I’m not sure if the LB’s were dropping off too soon, or the Safeties weren’t coming up quick enough, but it was driving me nuts.
grimes wasn’t his usual self and the titans were taking advantage of it.
I don’t think it’s on Grimes to cover the TE. The safeties have to do that once the LB’s let the TE go.
That depends on what the scheme is.
Walker is also a talented receiver. I don’t mind giving up some yards if we keep everything in front of us and don’t have receivers streaking down the field for long scores. Those kinds of plays are game changers.

What zone scheme has the CB’s playing the middle of the field?
plenty-u can have cb covering TE’s, rb’s and wr’s. It depends on what is drawn up by dc’s. Lots of moving parts.
You can have a CB in that zone, usually its when your running a full zone and not a hybrid. Im not sure exactly what play he is referring to but its possible.

I thought our zone defense was was getting killed by Delaney Walker. He caught so many passes sitting down in the empty space in that zone. I’m not sure if the LB’s were dropping off too soon, or the Safeties weren’t coming up quick enough, but it was driving me nuts.

Mike i think there may have been some confusion as to when the LB’s dropped off and Safeties picked up. There was a hole there most plays and the LB’s and Safeties both seemed to think they were doing their part. I watched Jenkins follow Walker out on one of those catches then peeled off him to cover the flat and a slot receiver over there, Jones was still back, and Walker got the ball right in between them. Either Mariota was just really good at finding that soft spot or we were kinda off on the transition.
I saw that play too, but Walker seemed to know exactly how far to go to lose the LB’s, and still be close enough that the S’s weren’t able to get there. That is until Jones finally jumped that route. It took a while, because Walker was killing us.
We seemed though to have agap where normally you wouldnt, certain plays though do that and if they are running the right play against the wrong defensive call its nearly impossible to stop if the QB times it right and is accurate enough.
Let me re-state, we have more of a gap in our zones from time to time, and that seemed like the LB/S wasnt fully on same page. Usually not that much of a soft spot.
We don’t play all zone. Off man is not zone. We also play man up on the strong side a lot. We play what they call the quarters coverage scheme a lot which is kind of half zone and half man, like a centaur. LOL

We play more man with the CB’s than zone. If we had a bigger guy on the outsides i think we would play a lot of press with this new D coord. We dont have the personell to play press much.
Most our plays are hybrid, with some of our Safeties/LB’s in zone, others on assignments, . and the CB’s in man.
anyone see Suh drop back into coverage yesterday? Guy is very athletic.

I think part of the issue with our coverage is our LBs aren’t the best coverage LBs around and we have a lot of DBs with little to no experience so we don’t really know yet how good they are. We also don’t have a lot of height and length at LB or CB and we got beat with some of their big WRs making plays our guys couldn’t contest.
We all knew our back end wasn’t the strength of this defense and that the front 4 had to set the tone which they started to do. At the end of the day the main stat is we allowed just 10 points on the road. Yards smards. LOL

Mario was the #1 pick in the NFL draft; lived up to expectations and is a HOFer type player.
yes he is HOF, but the pieces of that DL is not dependent on him and Rex is changing it to resemble all the defenses he has ever run. In addition he is not getting any younger and he probably won’t get what he wants with his next contract.

big test 4 coaching staff this week because they have only a few days to prepare not 2 weeks. He can motivate the team with this could be our 1st win against texans and then 4 days to prepare 4 at NE. I would fly to NE after sunday’s game against texans to get more time with players in hotel and away from their comfort of their homes.
Apparently the NFL’s next crusade will be to completely phase any aspect of physicality from the game. Perhaps the two teams will field their most scholarly players and debate for the victory.

We had 3 personal foul penalties. That has to be what they mean by too physical. The first one on Vernon was a low hit on the QB but he had lost his balance getting around the tackle. He didn’t go low on purpose. The second on Vernon was a 50-50 call. And the one on Mccain was him just being stupid and pushing a guy that wasn’t near the pile.

Agree. The O needs to continue the rush attack balance and if the TE are used more often in their 2 sets (Dion & Cameron in the open field as options on the receiving end) it will just make it easier to eventually incorporate a weapon such as Parker which will create matchup problems to many teams later in the season.
It was great to see Sims back, and for him to get that easy TD was icing.

We missed Fields yesterday. Darr didn’t help us on two average distance punts with below average hangtime from deep in our own territory.
It happens. Fields shit the bed in a game last year a couple times.
Darr is currently 5th in the NFL in raw punting yard distance; 9th in net average.
It does happen. Hopefully that was the exception. Small sample size so we still don’t know what we have in him.
Give the kid time……pretty sure he’ll never have the sniper scope that Fields does, but then almost no punter does.

The Vernon hit i think was the fact that he lunged as he was going down, into the QB’s legs. He did go over to Mariota after the game an apologize for the low hit, and Mariota accepted and said he didnt believe that Vernon did it intentionally. I dont think it was intentional but i definitely think he played through the point that a legal hit was an option. When he lunged, he was going to hit low, and he should try to be more aware, not for the sake of the player but for his team, and penalties like that can cost a team. Im not at all put off by the physicality of the play and yes the reaction to it has been really over the top, especially from Wisenhunt and Lewan who both know shit like that happens in football.
The second penalty he got was complete bullshit. Wasnt late and he got knocked into him. Im sure part of that penalty was carry over from the first one.
We do live in a world of pussified football, and almost every rule they add just puts us another step deeper into it.

The second one I didn’t see as egregiously wrong (by the rules). It wasn’t about him being late. I thought it was one of two things. He either led with the crown or the top of his helmet brushed the bottom of Mariota’s face mask. I thought it was a play that might be called sometimes and not called others. You’re probably spot on that the fact it was Vernon again didn’t help.
