SUNDAY WRAP UP

No Dolphins on Sunday, they are still licking their wounds from last Thursday Night.

But the rest of the NFL was in action.

Cheifs

Want another London Game?  The NFL thinks you do.  Sunday you were able to watch football from 9:30 AM until Midnight without crying about the Dolphins.  Lions fans cried before you did anything on Sunday.  The Chiefs beat the Lions convincingly to start the day in London.

Yexans

The last two victims of the Dolphins also played each other on Sunday.  The Texans beat up on the Titans.  DeAndre Hopkins continues to have an impressive season.

SDiggs

Another young WR to keep you eye on is Stefon Diggs who helped the Vikings beat the Bears.  The Bears just keep losing.

Saints

One of the craziest games of the day was between the Saints and Giants.  And by crazy I mean no defense played.  It was the highest scoring game of the NFL season.

Drew Brees tied the NFL record with 7 TD passes.  Eli Manning threw 6 TDs.  The secondaries of each team had a group[ cry together after the game.

SSmith

Speaking of making secondaries cry – We may have seen the last of Steve Smith on Sunday.  He tore his achilles tendon in the Chargers game.  The Ravens beat the Charges – who continue to struggle but they lost an important player.

Bengals

The Bengals stayed undefeated.  They beat up Ben Rothlisberger all day and won the game on on a Dalton to Green TD pass.

Teams like the Bengals have the ’72 Dolphins a little worried.

RaidersCarr

Want some good AFC East News.  The Raiders beat the Jests!  Derek Carr threw 4 TDs before the 3rd quarter was over.  The Jests secondary continues to struggle.

49ers’ RB Reggie Bush will undergo season-ending surgery Tuesday on his torn MCL, per sources. ACL was OK, but MCL was not.

I dont recall any of those since Marino. Now its like 3 in 2 weeks.

I heard on NFL radio that the Cowboys are willing to trade for a #2 WR. I’d give them Matthews or Stills for La’el Collins and a draft pick in next years draft.

  4. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

    Mike
I think you still have La’el Collins dreams every night….lol

  5. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

    Also
LAlmost every depth chart I looked at has Collins starting at LG
I have not watched the Cowboys but I do think Martin and Collins are their starting OGs

  6. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I guess Collins is starting now, but he wasn’t the majority of the season. I’d trade Devante Parker for Collins, but he’s not healthy.

  7. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

    Piggy

I think La’el Collins would have helped us a lot more this season than Devante Parker has.

  8. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Drafting Parker had nothing to do with Collins though as we know – he wasn’t drafted at all because of that murder case he had nothing to do with.

  9. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I’m not saying we should have drafted Collins over Parker, the murder case prohibited that. If the murder case never happened, Collins would have been the better pick for us.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

That’s at least debatable. Our issues right now aren’t about one WR though, the team as a whole is very inconsistent.

  10. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Our issues are definitely not WR, exactly, but O-line most certainly is, so getting Collins would help. Maybe the Cowboys would be interested in Stills or Matthews.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

You know what sucks, our OL is a work in progress but it gets much more difficult when we get injuries because we haven’t had the time to add superior depth. The entire OL had to be revamped the last 2 years. There’s only so much you can do in that time frame.

  13. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

If I were the Mets, I’d try to find a youngish leadoff hitter with base stealing skills, and then you can move Granderson anywhere between #2 and #6. That’s an easier way to get more run production without getting a big bat in the lineup.

  14. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

It’s such an odd year in the NFL. Four 7-0 undefeated teams, and then the rest of the AFC is a mess, and in the NFC, the Packers, Cards and Vikes round out the NFC elite, besides the 7-0 Panthers. I don’t think any of the undefeated teams are really that good except for the Patriots, who are always dangerous with Tom Brady and Bill Belichick.

  15. D's avatar D says:

You guys bemoaning Parker already… Forget the pipe dream of Collins, he may would help us, but he wouldnt save us, and it isnt going to happen…0 chance, unless we trade like 2 number 1 picks or something stupid.

Now isnt the time to get desperate. We need to continue to play best we can, ride out this year and start working towards the next. We won those two games and looked good doing it, but it was a pipe dream if any of you thought that it would ride out the rest of the season like that. Campbell is new, and we got beat by a team that has a coach with a lot more experience. They were prepared for us, we weren’t for them. First big opponent, first rivalry game at their house (which they are great playing at), first time trying to prep on a short week, etc. That never had much chance for success and it wasnt a complete embarrassment like the first 4 were either. Defense until late really put forth a good effort, offense got shut down by a defense with a great strategy for us.

  16. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

    Tim

Not sure about who that may be, we may have to trade. Denard Span is a guy we could use, but he’s 31. I’d prefer a younger player. Gerardo Parra is a possibility too. Both are free agents.

  17. BoulderPhinfan's avatar BoulderPhinfan says:

    Mike,
I think denver is gonna beat the pats in denver later this month. Denver’s defense looks legit to me.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Defense is good, but the offense is pedestrian.

      • BoulderPhinfan's avatar BoulderPhinfan says:

it wasn’t against the packers. The offense looked good as well. We’ll see. week 11 game in denver should be a good one. They also play the bengals in denver this year. They could have home field throughout playoffs.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Maybe Vernon Davis revives his career. He’s been invisible for years now in SF

  18. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

    D

Chill out man. Watch Bob Ross or something. The Cowboys are looking to trade for a WR, so I brought up La’el Collins for Stills. I have no idea if Stills even interests them, or if we even have interest in Collins. Just threw it out there, because that’s what we do here. lol

  19. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I’ve accepted that this team simply isn’t ready for prime time, they’re just not. We have a lot of young players who are still developing and there is no other way around it. Losing Wake for the season and James for 4-6 weeks makes us a less talented team even though next man up. But we know we don’t have guys as good and definitely not better than them. Just keep working and trying to improve and see where you end up.

    • BoulderPhinfan's avatar BoulderPhinfan says:

Nothing new. They haven’t been ready for prime time for 13 years. Its the same shit every year. young players. developing blah blah blah.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I’m just pointing out what they are today, not what they’ve been. I don’t care about the past because you can’t change it. My point was I don’t expect anything special from this team this year. Maybe they’ll surprise us.

  20. D's avatar D says:

Im not needing to chill Mike, im not attacking you or anything im just saying its a pipe dream. Cowboys arent trading one of their starting OL they have on a 4 year 460k a year contract for a 4/5th receiver on a contract with 2 years left at 585k. You stated it, i said its not happening. Isnt that what the blog is about, people have dreams and then someone crushes them….i was just doing you a solid lol.

    • BoulderPhinfan's avatar BoulderPhinfan says:

I think we’re all frustrated that even though everyone knew this team had a lack of talent on the oline the FO decided to go with a injured WR and a lazy DT with the 1st 2 picks of the draft.

      Stupid is as stupid does.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I think Phillips has look good at times. Parker also looked very good in OTAs before his foot gave him problems. Look around the league, lots of teams have injured players. It’s not unique to us but when things don’t go our way it’s easy to pile on.

  21. finfanrob's avatar finfanrob says:

‘ It’s not unique to us but when things don’t go our way it’s easy to pile on.’

i am pretty sure about 8 weeks ago most on here had this team in the SB.

most loved the draft the, signing of suh (i believe that is pronounced ‘busted FA signing’) and thought they were going to take over the pats with a suspended brady. why i just say, i will wait till december to let you know if they team is any good.

    • BoulderPhinfan's avatar BoulderPhinfan says:

many of us wanted us to address the oline in the draft. And many of us wanted Mathis here for 2 million bucks. WE had much better options right now if we had mathis.

  22. BoulderPhinfan's avatar BoulderPhinfan says:

    tim,
No one is saying that parker is not good or phillips is not good but we had glaring needs on the oline and we decided to not address that early in the draft or FA

2 most important needs on phins last year were stopping the run and keeping tanny upright and giving him a solid rushing attack (oline). They addressed stopping the run by bringing in suh. But they didn’t do anything regarding the 2nd which was the oline.

You can spin it however you want but IMO the FO failed by not addressing the oline early in draft and in FA. And BTW I’m not alone about this. Just read the comments on phins sites. Everyone is saying the same thing.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I’m not spinning anything. I’m not blaming anyone or giving anyone props either. I’m just talking about the team’s status.

We’ve invested a ton in the OL but the entire unit has been revamped over the last two years. It’s not as easy as just drafting another guy in the 1st or 2nd rd and everything is great. Most of these guys have never played with each other or a lot. It is what it is. I knew it was going to take time and said so. Hickey had to rebuild the OL the day he got here. Pouncey was all he had to work with along with Thomas. It’s easy as a fan to just say do this do that and we’d be great.

      • BoulderPhinfan's avatar BoulderPhinfan says:

well hickey will probably have to rebuild again after this year if he’s around. We might become a power running team and not a zone blocking finesse rushing team. Yikes.

  23. finfanrob's avatar finfanrob says:

    boulder,

i know some wanted the o line fixed. i for one said this team would only go as far as the o line. i know i was wrong about that cause the d sucks just as bad. but all in all most on here were thinking this team was set for a sb run.

    • BoulderPhinfan's avatar BoulderPhinfan says:

as Tim said, it is what it is. We’re used to disappointing seasons around here.

I guess, as always, we’ll wait till next year.

  24. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

    D

It’s no more a pipe dream than any of the other garbage spewed here. We have disposable WR’s, but we need O-line help. Cowboys have depth on the O-line, so that might be a place they’d be willing to swap out.

    • D's avatar D says:

You may be right, but for the sake of your wife and children, dont hold your breath until it happens. Just trust me on this one.

  25. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

    2014: Albert 2008 1st rd UFA signing
    2014: Fox 2010 4th rd UFA signing
    2014: James 1st rd
    2014: Turner 3rd rd
    2015: Pouncey 2011 1st rd re-signed
    2015: Douglas 4th rd

We’ve addressed the OL quite a bit in two years along with developing some other players already here and adding some new depth players. Not sure how much more you wanted to invest in it within two years?

  26. finfanrob's avatar finfanrob says:

hey i know, maybe they can sign some guy that is like a football guru and bring him in to build a o line.

watching ryan playing against the bucs just reminded me what a total failure fatcells was. i dont know if ryan would be the same player he is for the falcons but at least he is still in the league.

i think i said that in my original post. no one can predict what a player would do for another team. there is no way to say if brees would have been more successful then culpepper. but it is debatable that ryan was the better draft pick and fatcells ego is the reason he wasnt drafted by the fins

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

A lot of people had Jake Long as the #1 pick. He was the guy I thought we’d take going back to January of 2008 so I wasn’t surprised. That said all this revisiting history is pointless. We’re so past that.

  30. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I don’t think our problems rest solely on the OL
And I don’t even think its a major factor

    • D's avatar D says:

Im with you on this Piggy. I think it has its problem but the team’s issues are well beyond just the OL.

Im still not sure why we so drastically altered our game plan from what had been successful the past couple of weeks and went back to something that resembled more of the shit that hadn’t worked the first 4 weeks. I really credit the poor showing on offense to really badly called game more so than player performance problems.

Taylor on defense though is done. I think we have seen enough that putting one of the rookies in, or making it a rookie rotational wouldn’t be any worse performance and would get needed development time.

      • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I tend to think that coaching and general game management can put good players and good units in bad situations

and this is what we’ve been dealing with for a while now

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I don’t either. We have a lot of youth and questionable talent at some positions and we really can’t afford to lose our top players because we’re not deep enough. It will be interesting to see if we can come close to replacing Wake’s pressure.

  31. getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

I tend to agree with Tim on the OL. As he pointed out, lots has already recently been invested in it, and we’ll likely go OT/LT early in the 2016 draft for Albert’s future replacement.

At some point, when does John Benton make something out of all the major investments @ OL ???

Also, we all see that the play calling is a huge blame too, that has resulted in an OL under constant barrage.

We got to be able to run the ball with some regularity or else play like shit trying to pass!

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

John Benton’s former O-lines didn’t run plays out of shotgun 90% of the time. Look at what happened when we didn’t do that. Lamar Miller looked like the best back in the league.

  32. finfanrob's avatar finfanrob says:

the oline play and lack of a rush attack was the major reason we got blown out against the pats. When their D punched us in the face we should have punched back instead of shitting our pants.

its cause there are so many damn penalties this year the players are tightening up in between plays.

  47. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Piggy, I think extreme conditioning resulting in crazy speed and strength, along with limited practicing due to the new CBA is a big part of the amount of injuries we see now. A lot of players lack fundamentals so you see some reckless stuff out there.

  48. BoulderPhinfan's avatar BoulderPhinfan says:

I guess when pouncey says the oline played like shit against the pats he’s lying.

When philbin was the coach Tim says its not coaching, the players aren’t winning one on one match ups. Now that philbin is gone Tim says its the play calls not the players losing one on one matchups. If we had run more running plays from under center we would have beat the pats or been more competitive.

So which is it? Players or schemes and coaching? Or both?

  52. getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

Tim, I think/know we have talent in several spots. I see it, others see it, the experts see it.
But that talent has been hamstrung in a lot of ways with system & play calls on both sides of the ball.
Good coaching gets the most out of talent, and can recognize what type of talent they have and where best to put that talent so that they and others around them have better chances of succeeding.

Thankfully the move was made upon seeing this coaching lack.
Philbin is gone, then Coyle. Campbell can’t overhaul it all in a few weeks, but he did bring in Saunders since he had a previous relationship with Lazor, and hope this will steady Lazor more.

It worked well for 2 weeks. But then the brutal short week of a 4 day turnaround going on the road to NE was too much to ask for a reorganizing team.

This week will be a measure of how well we respond to that bad road trip, with another road trip against another division rival that trounced us in week 2.

If we can come out of this Sunday with a big win, and start playing the type of ball that this talent knows it can play, then I think we’ll be ok. Maybe not Wild Card ok, but at least trending the right way and securing HC Campbell for 2016 and the foreseeable future.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Of course we have talent. I question the depth of it. As this season has unfolded I’ve questioned the overall talent. I admitted Philbin lost the team and much of it was coaching because of the night and day change in performance. But the game in NE once again reared it’s ugly head and really talented teams don’t keep playing you blow us out, we blow you out, you blow us out.

      • getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

The LB corps is average to below average, and the CB’s, beside Grimes are below average. Reshad Jones is having a pro bowl season, while aikens and Thomas are just eh. The O-line has ben suspect, especially with Albert out or hobbled. Now it will really be tested with James out. The RB’s are good when they get opportunities, most games they don’t. The QB is also good enough to win, when we have a balanced offense.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Outside of Grimes and Jones our DBs are young with little experience. The same thing on the OL. Our WRs aren’t exactly seasoned vets either and Sims is still a young TE developing. That’s what I’ve been saying, if we have to rely on too many youngins it could hurt us.

Jamar Taylor isn’t young and inexperienced, he’s young, he sucks, and he’s injured way too often. He’s almost as old as Brandon Weeden.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

He just turned 25 and he’s played in just 28 games in 3 seasons but has had to battle through some injuries and hasn’t really been able to string too many together. I’ve also seen him do some good things but all anyone remembers are the bad plays. Most young corners go through ups and downs. I still think he has upside and is developing.

“I’ve also seen him do some good things but all anyone remembers are the bad plays.”

Tim, people have their own perception of things, and often, at least in my case, they are not based entirely on “fact” or “reality”.

One of my most disliked dolphins players of all time for me was Terrell Buckley. I called him Toast Buckley very derisively for a long time. I don’t remember his 50 career interceptions and 6 touch downs. I just remember him gambling and losing on soooo many big plays that let the other team get the lead. He obviously (from his stats) made plays. I can only remember hating him for missing some big ones in game critical situations.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

All corners get beat in this league especially young ones or it wouldn’t be considered a passing league. If you’re expecting all our corners to be shutdown you’re going to be waiting a long time. Taylor has also made big plays and he’s one of our better tacklers.

BRIAN: Me and the Mrs. were without a computer for almost a week. We watched the debacle in Foxboro in South Carolina while at a convention. Can’t speak for you but I really thought the game would be competitive. Gotta hunch the Fins will be MUCH more physical in there upcoming game in Beefalo. The extra days to prepare won’t hurt, either. What’s your outlook for the Bills’ game?

  74. Ken's avatar Ken says:

What’s up FUers? Been jammed with work last couple of days. Pretty interesting day in the NFL. Very surprised to see Wisenhunt fired. I mean he just drafted a rookie QB. You figure that buys him some time, especially since the kid played well and has been out the last 2 weeks.

  75. Ken's avatar Ken says:

I am also surprised Pep Hamilton got fired as OC in Indy. Not his fault that Luck is regressing.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Blame the front office for that teams woes. They went about building that team the wrong way. They thought they were close so they added some vets to their young skill guys when they didn’t have good personnel on the OL or on defense. Mike Francesa called that in the offseason and it’s played out just like that, and he’s a huge Luck fan.

      • Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

You can’t blame them for thinking they we close though Tim- they went to the AFC Championship last season!

  76. Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

    Ken,
Wisenhunt was 3-20 with the Titans, so I guess they have seen enough. As far as Indy goes, I’m sure that Pagano and Grigson know their jobs are on life support if the season continues on it’s current path.

  77. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

D, I’m not into mock drafts at this time but I’d put DE high on our priority list with Wake lost for the year and Vernon being a UFA although he hasn’t played all that well for a big contract. We can’t count on Jordan.

  78. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Brian, yeah you can blame the Colts FO because their roster was not good and they feasted on a bad division and won some crazy games with Luck’s gunslinging ways. But when they face a really good team they get knocked around.

That’s like saying the Mets don’t need to improve their defense moving forward because they made the WS. They definitely have to improve their defense and add some team speed to compliment their pitching moving forward.

  79. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

The defense did keep us in the Pats game most of the first half but the offense shit the bed. Once again, no complimentary football to keep a game close and have a chance to win it late which you have to do sometimes.

  80. olddolphan's avatar olddolphan says:

AGREE WITH TIM that offensive line woes have had a lot to do with Luck’s difficulties. Sounds like another team that we all follow, eh? And, speaking of the Dolphins, they were absolutely RIGHT to direct a ton of effort on the O-Line. The PROBLEM is they picked a lot of guys who CAN’T GET THE JOB DONE!! NOT IMPRESSED with most of the O-Line selections made the last 3-4 years. PICKING THE WRONG GUYS has cost Miami dearly. IMHO, the offensive line is Miami’s number one need in the upcoming draft. So you guys who HATE picking O-Linemen in the top 2 rounds likely will have more to complain about. ESPECIALLY if T-BAUM is the man making the selections.

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

I agree with Tim too but the OL woes are not the only reason why Luck is struggling. I saw him make some very bad decisions and throws last night even when he had time. I suspect he is more injured than is being let on.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Isn’t he playing with cracked ribs? They announced that leading up to the game. He’s definitely hurting and that OL got him hurt.

      • Ken's avatar Ken says:

The Colts are being very cloak and dagger about Luck’s health. I think they are bordering on league violations about disclosures. Something is not right with Luck.

  81. Ken's avatar Ken says:

I agree with Tim that Colts FO did a terrible job this off season in loading up on high priced aging vets when what they needed was some young talent on OL.

  82. Ken's avatar Ken says:

    Brian:
I am still puzzled by Titans. I get that Wiz was 3-20 but you have a rookie QB and just 7 games into his rookie season you ditch the coach. It doesn’t make sense to me, especially considering how good Mariotta has looked and he has missed the last 2 games.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

They’re a rebuilding team and Wiz is a good coach. They weren’t ready to do anything this year. That might have been a big mistake. What coach are they going to land that turns them around? I don’t even know what good coaches are out there?

  83. olddolphan's avatar olddolphan says:

  84. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

OD, I think it’s too early to make final evaluations on the OL we drafted. 4 of them have been drafted within the last 3 years.

Bill Polian said OL coming out of college aren’t ready for the NFL with all the talent laced skill guys and gimmick systems. When they get to the NFL they lack basic fundamentals and at times strength. Then in the NFL they get limited reps in TC to develop those skills due to the new CBA. He said it’s a league wide problem, we’re one of 20+ teams with OL issues, most teams have them.

    • olddolphan's avatar olddolphan says:

TOO BAD we’re stuck with T-Baum instead of Polian. –I’m REALLY OUT this time!

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

I didn’t watch a lot but the little I saw I came away impressed with the Royals. Very scrappy team and like the great Yankee teams they have a hell of a bullpen.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

That was their strength for sure. They pressured the Mets defense by attacking that weakness and exploiting it 3 times to come back from deficit. They knew the odds of errors being made were there and they were right. That and the Mets didn’t hit enough. But it was enjoyable and the Mets exceeded all my expectations.

  86. herdfan's avatar herdfan says:

  87. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Mets better work with d’Arnaud on getting that throw down to 2nd base much quicker and more accurately. They MUST teach everyone, from position players to pitchers how to bunt. I’ve never seen a team collectively that can’t get a bunt down. That has to change.

  88. New Age's avatar New Age says:

I actually agree with Matt Leinart on Whisenhunt’s firing. What exactly was the ‘Wiz’ good at except losing? The only time he looked good was with a great QB named Warner who carried that team.

    • New Age's avatar New Age says:

On the Mets, it was fun and a lot better than I expected before the trade deadline. Time to shore up issues but the team was really close. That first game should have been a win and they carried leads deep into most of those games. Just not enough in the end. They did fantastic though and it was good to see them back in it.

  92. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

    LOL @ Mike E

I think d’Arnaud was fatigued and had no legs and it affected his batting too. He’s not the best guy at throwing runners out anyway but he was even less throughout the playoffs. He dropped a ton of easy pitches too not that they caused anything, but I could see he was tired. He played every game, had a tough year with injuries and didn’t get days off like he did all season with Plawecki. He was better during the season. That said he can still improve his defensive skills.

that pretty much stands for about all but maybe 3 or 4 catchers in the league. gone are the days of the johnny bench’s and the catcher being the leader of the team.

  95. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

d’Arnaud (27) and Plawecki (25) in 2016 could turn out to be a good catching duo. d’Arnaud more bat, Plawecki more defense but the org thinks he will hit.
