Welcome to Ask Mike – 2015 Season Week 11

from Wyo

Q – Mike, You have

CB  JALEN RAMSEY – FLORIDA STATE
OT  RONNIE STANLEY – NOTRE DAME
OLB  MYLES JACK – UCLA
OLB  JAYLON SMITH – NOTRE DAME
Setting there in the first round.

Who is your pick?

Things may change, but as you know I haven’t been thrilled with our O-line, and it’s time to bring in a young LT, hopefully one that can actually stay here and be a standout player for a decade or so. It’s so painfully obvious what a difference there is when #76, Branden Albert is on the field, and when he isn’t. Let’s finally draft our other bookend, and with Pouncey, and maybe Turner and either Douglas or Thomas, we can have some continuity on our O-line. Maybe this OT can start at G his first season so he has value and gets playing experience, and then the following year, replaces #76.

All the other players I’d love to have, and I do recognize we really need a CB here. I suppose I could go CB or LB in RD 1, and then grab a OT in the 2nd or 3rd RD. I’d just hate to skimp on possibly the most important position on the O-line, especially since our O-line has been a letdown, admittedly, partially due to Lazor’s offense.

Really, it’s like switching chairs around on a sinking Titanic. Does it matter? We have a lot of holes to fill, and lord we knows we need CB’s and LB, but since the league is so biased towards offense, get the best you can to make the offense work.

So, with the 11th pick in the 2016 NFL draft . . .

The Miami Dolphins select OT, Notre Dame, Ronnie Stanley
______________________________________________
After 9 games played, the Miami Dolphins stand at 4-5. Not what any of us fans had hoped for, after what seemed like a promising off season. The problems, or holes if you will, are many. While the run game has shown lots of promise, it still remains a second citizen in Lazor’s offense. I can’t think of one good reason for that to be the case, especially with Rookie Jay Ajayi showing he’s ready to roll, and busting out some big runs with few opportunities. The cabinet is NOT bare behind Lamar Miller, so let’s run the ball. Nice 1-2 punch of Miller and Ajayi. It seems painfully obvious that the O-line doesn’t struggle when run blocking, so keep at it!

Jay Ajayi

On defense, far too many holes exist. Grimes is slipping, and although rookie Bobby McCain shows promise, I’m not convinced he’d be starting anywhere else but here, out of sheer desperation. For once, it’s not the CB’s that are the worst unit now. With Jelani Jenkins, Koa Misi and Spencer Paysinger banged up, we have Mike Hull, Neville Hewitt and Zach Vigil. The ALL UNDRAFTED team!

UNDRAFTED LB's

BTW, back to the standings. Miami is in last place in the AFC East, but what really freaks me out is we’re the only team with a negative point differential. We’re -34, while the Jets and Bills are at +33 and +24 respectively, and the Pats are in an other worldly +134.

McPain had a nice sack this past week knocking Eagles QB Sam Bradford out of the game!

McPain

OK, so back to the NFL standings, and what it means for our team. As silly as it may seem, we still have a shot at the playoffs, due to how poorly the rest of the AFC is playing. We need one of the 2 teams in our division to fall, either the Jets or Bills. We probably need the Steelers to fall too. We need the Chiefs and Raiders to stay about where they are, and we need the Colts and Texans to stay on their current path as well. It’s a lot, it really is, because along with all that, we need to go on a tear, and I mean win almost every game. Maybe we have a one game cushion, but that’s not necessarily the case. It’s a pipe dream, but hey, why not?

Howie – as my “4-2 Mia – we win the safety battle” seems to have been rejected by the rules committee, I’ll go 25-19 Mia = 21-17 + 4-2!
I also hadn’t realised the No Fun League had passed an edict saying TNF would be played in PJs for the rest of the season …… how wrong were we? Were those Jags uniforms onesies? SMH.

CAN MIAMI’s O-Line give Tanny enough time to throw medium range passes?? – – To me, that’s one of the two keys to what’s now a Pick ’em game in Las Vegas. The other key element? –Can the Fins D-Line put enough pressure on Romo to force him into turnovers, either interceptions or fumbles? His royal rustyness hasn’t played a real game for about two months. If SUH brings the HEAT, there will be turnovers. –One final factor. Is THIS the week Jay Ajayi runs for over 100 yards?? If it is, Miami will win this game!!

A COUPLE of D-1 head footbal coaches have already lost their jobs this season at U. of Miami and Central Florida. FAU’s Charlie Partridge could be the third if the Owls get slaughtered at Florida on Saturday (UF’s favored by 31). Conversely, if FAU keeps the game reasonably close, AND if they win their final game next week, Partridge may yet save his job Partridge is a good recruiter but he’s NOT a particularly clever game day strategist. We shall see. I would not be surprised if he becomes the 3rd D-1 head coach in Florida to be fired this season.

    From that David Hyde article:
“Did Joe Philbin (and his staff) misjudge the talent of receiver Rishard Matthews in the same manner they did linebacker Jelani Jenkins?”

What does this even mean? We all know what the deal has been with Matthews and Jenkins started some games as a rookie, and has been a starter since his 2nd season now in his 3rd.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

      he’s just pouring it on

I think he means why did Matthews was not involved more in the offense like he is this year

but I think that is a wrong assumption
day 3 draft picks usually don;t contribute right away
I think Matthews has developed into what he is now and a lot of that is also just good chemistry with Tanny which has developed over time

I think Jenkins was starting fairly early into his career

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Right. This is not the first year Matthews has made plays. But Matthews also had some discipline and concentration issues with drops his first few years as well.

  8. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I love how vigorously Tim defends the Dolphins organization

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Well when David Hyde is basically making stuff up I point out how wrong he is. He’s totally clueless on Jenkins as Piggy also pointed out.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

It’s not just Hyde Tim, and it’s OK. You just have a definite history of defending coaches and the organization in general. Nothing wrong with that.

  9. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

OK, so Tannehill can’t audible, or isn’t allowed. Or is he? Will we ever know the truth on this?

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

      he isn’t allowed to audible
Isn’t that what everyone is saying
why he is not allowed is a different question

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Does anyone really know that for sure though? Maybe that’s what the Dolphins want everyone to think. I have no idea. I’ve heard broadcasters say it a bunch of times, criticizing Tannehill and the Dolphins for it, but maybe they’re wrong.

  10. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Mike E, I’m not defending coaches, I’m pointing out inaccuracies because I follow the team and that’s not how it went down.

  11. son of a son of a shula's avatar son of a son of a shula says:

If Tannehill simply doesn’t have the wherewithal to audible – we’re screwed
If they don’t/won’t let him – we’re screwed
We need big league coaching. Can Joe Madden coach football? Cause we need him.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I think too much is being made of it and I don’t think Hyde really knows the details. You can see changes being made on the field based on what the defense is doing. Remember passing plays have multiple options anyway.

The biggest issue we have on offense is Lazor calling too much shotgun and gimmicky crap and not committing to the running game enough.

  12. son of a son of a shula's avatar son of a son of a shula says:

It’s obvious they don’t audible, I’ve noticed it, because sometimes we’re in a bad play against certain defensive alignments, you can see it’s gonna be bad and we run it anyway.

  13. D's avatar D says:

There was one play last game i heard what i thought was an audible from him. Could be it was faked, part of the play design, but he turned to the back and called something then the players shifted before the snap. It wound up being a epic fail of a play too so im ok with him not being able to audible if that’s the results.

  14. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Dan Campbell said on Wednesday that Tannehill could audible his first two years under offensive coordinator Mike Sherman but the feeling was, “it slows him down and his rhythm.”

That is a pretty damning statement right there. No coach is going to come out and say “He just can’t do it”. But when the coaches think you’re better off NOT using audibles, what conclusions are you supposed to draw from it? What kind of offense doesn’t audible?

    • D's avatar D says:

It goes back to his ability to read the defense. It affects his downfield passing reads and his pre-snap reads. It might be a limited football IQ at thispoint in his career and having such limited experience at QB in college but there have been times i have seen the defense telegraph like crazy what they are doing and therefore he should know what route is likely open and he misses it pre-snap to make adjustments and post snap looking away from what they are flat out giving to him.

      • D's avatar D says:

Between Lazor’s ineffectiveness at disguising plays and Tannys inability to read and make adjustments, there are times i can tell this is going to be a big ole failure of a play before the snap, and if i can see it just think how someone like Rex Ryan, etc feels about our offense. They feel emboldened to put their ears back and just throw everything at him whenever they want.

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

It’s a frustrating offense to watch.

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

I also wonder if maybe Lazor’s offense with all it’s moving parts, the shifts and motions, make it more difficult to audible. With all the presnap movement it may limit what you can do.

  15. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Son, what I’m saying is most plays have options going in, it isn’t just one option. An audible is a total play change so that’s not what we do. But Hyde said he wrote about this a month ago or so and that Philbin didn’t really explain it so it’s not just based on what Campbell said.

Again, our issues on offense at times is not because of audibles.

    • D's avatar D says:

On any play the receivers could have multiple options, and generally at least 2 options depending on what they see of how their defender is playing them. Tanny has to see that same setup and therefore be on same page with what the receiver runs. When you see plays where the QB throws the complete opposite direction of where the receiver cut, thats generally when they weren’t on the same page. So chemistry is big for that.

I also really think Tanny just hasn’t gotten there with the reads, and i mean looking at the defense and how its lined up and having an idea if they are zone/man/press across the DB’s and LB’s. He definitely cant spot the blitz packages, but Pouncey is suppose to call those out. Good QB’s though can read it and already have their pocket plan in place when they see it.

Auidibles are for when the play thats call has 0 chance of success looking at the defensive alignment, like you have a power run play called on a run blitz defensive line up. Thats going to fail, so you might want to audible to a screen or middle crossing route to take advantage of the gap that will be there when the LB’s blitz. Only really football smart QB’s should be calling audibles a lot.

  16. son of a son of a shula's avatar son of a son of a shula says:

Man, Telvin Smith was a 5th rounder for the Jags, he’s a good player.

    • D's avatar D says:

Yeah he has. I think he would have been a higher pick has he had better physical attributes. I think there was too much concern that his college position and play would translate to the NFL where bigger players would affect him. Turns out he has played very well.

  17. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

You see what stories like this creates. Now people immediately go into Tannehill isn’t smart enough to audible and shit like that. The media throws out a lure, people bite and start going off making all kinds of assumptions when nobody really knows the depth of what we do on offense.

This sort of stuff has happened so many times and then you find out it’s not totally accurate or a big deal. But we spend 48 hours making comments about it not really knowing much about it.

    • D's avatar D says:

Its not intelligence but i would agree with football IQ criticisms. Its because he still is just barley where a rookie QB would be in terms of experience at the position, due to how little experience he had at the position in college. That kind of thing for most QB’s is a developed trait, only really rare ones seem to have it instinctively.

Lazor has been the OC since last year. Why game 10 of season 2 are we talking about Tanny not being able to audible?

    • son of a son of a shula's avatar son of a son of a shula says:

Because his coach just told everyone he doesn’t and can’t

    • D's avatar D says:

Becaue last week it looked as if he did call and audible and it was an epic fail. Some of the media people probably caught on about it and asked about the audible and they defneded it saying he isnt calling audibles, and then next question is “well why isnt he allowed to call audibles.” I think they kinda got set up and now media is making more of it than there is there.

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Because we have an ineffective offense and it’s only natural to talk about the reasons for that. Lazor is definitely a big part of the problem, nobody disagrees with that, but this isn’t Tanny’s first OC, nor the first that doesn’t have him audible.

    ——————————————–
It gives him less time to plan pre-snap. Offense shifts, defense shifts with it and he has to re-read, and call the play. Since we arent going up-tempo but shifting like we are, it means he has very little time to re-read and adjust. It doesnt present a lot of opportunity to audible.

  21. son of a son of a shula's avatar son of a son of a shula says:

Tannehill, I was noticing in the Eagles game, seems to cut the field in half quite a bit. A couple of times he took massive hits from the blind side and never once looked left. Besides not looking that way he must also not have very good peripheral vision because he just had no idea.

    • son of a son of a shula's avatar son of a son of a shula says:

From snap to sack his eyes never went left

    • D's avatar D says:

I have seen him glance back and still not see it. The strip sack vs buffalo, he looked back and if he didnt see Fox getting absolutely obliterated he is blind as a bat. He then turned his back to him and drew his arm back to pass at which time he got stripped by Hughes and Hughes recovered it.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Like on the play where nobody picked up the blitzer?

      • son of a son of a shula's avatar son of a son of a shula says:

There were more than 1 that I noticed but even in the instance of a free rusher if looked that way at all he would be able to throw it over his head or god forbid make a play with his legs.

      • D's avatar D says:

Tim, there are plays where no one is there to pick it up…. Its on Tanny to read the blitz and have a plan to step out of it. Im not saying there arent breakdowns you cant account for but he stood there like a statue back in the first buffalo game when Bacari Rambo came on a safety blitz up the middle, with him in a naked backfield and he didnt move one step, the safety telegraphed the blitz, he came from semi deep in the secondary giving him plenty of time to pick it up and adjust and he didnt move one step. He steps just to the side , either way on that play and Rambo runs all the way to Jacksonville and hopefully finds the guy who is in the zone Rambo was in for a completion.

  22. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

ME and Coach Rambo both……why leave a weapon unfired?
    ——————————-
Tannehill has just 17 carries for 44 yards this season, a huge step backward from last year, when he had 311 yards on 56 carries. Campbell says the Dolphins haven’t taken Tannehill’s runs out of the playbook, and they’re hoping to get Tanehill more active with his legs.

“That’s certainly still in our package,” Campbell said. “Would we like to run him more? Yeah.”

  23. D's avatar D says:

They need to get Tanny in the film room and put a defensive lineup on the projector which is displaying over a whiteboard. He needs to be shown a shot of the defense before the snap and then he needs to draw out the players x’s and o’s style and then draw where he thinks they will be going based on what the defense is showing. They need to advance the frames and show him where they wind up and then explain to him why he was wrong. They do this day in and day out he likely will begin to see the defenses pre-snap and the rest will wall into place.

    • D's avatar D says:

Do that with the receivers as well and see where they differ on opinion and then let them talk it out and get on the same page.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

No he’s never done this, he’s only played QB at a major college and has been in the NFL for 4 years. 😉

      • D's avatar D says:

Well if they have then he isnt getting it still, you have to assume what they have tried isnt working. Im sure they have let him watch film and discussed it with him btu i dont know if they have ever made him predictively draw it out and then figure out why he thought the wrong thing.

  24. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Son, QBs have to trust their OL, TEs and RBs to pick that stuff up, especially the blind side, that’s why they call it that, it’s the blind side. Tanny’s not the first QB to get blind sided and as a matter of fact, he rarely gets blind sided, but it did happen twice last week. The one that rocked him a bit where you saw him taking deep breaths on the side line could have been called a penalty on the blitzer for launching himself into the QB.

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

If it’s the play I’m thinking of, that wasn’t Tanny’s fault. Albert doubled the inside guy and left a free rusher on a stunt. Wasn’t even a blitz.

      • son of a son of a shula's avatar son of a son of a shula says:

I’m recalling a play where he was able to stand in there for ample time to get rid of the ball or at least scan the left side. I noticed it several times.

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

That is different than the one I’m thinking of then. The one I’m thinking of, Tanny got hit pretty quickly.

      • D's avatar D says:

Yeah that was completely on Albert, i think he thought his guy was going to cover a zone instead of rush because he paused before rushing. Albert turned inside to assist Thomas (who didnt need it that play) and then the guy rushes and Albert cant correct and get back to him.

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Yep, that’s the play I was thinking of.

    • son of a son of a shula's avatar son of a son of a shula says:

QB’s have to trust their line and so forth yes but they also have to get rid of the ball in under 2.5 seconds so when you lock on your receiver and wait for him the pocket is breaking down, he at times has to come off and see more of the field. Watch him Sunday, quite often he never looks to one side. This is how he has missed uncovered receivers or the deep ball when his receiver got past the corner.

  25. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

I think Tanny is takes enough hits on passing downs. I’m actually ok with the fact they are running him less. I have my criticisms of Tanny but he is the best QB we have, and it’s not even close. If he gets injured, the season gets really ugly.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

But if you establish the threat of him running it softens up the coverage and makes them change their schemes. And I’m not saying he needs to fight for every last year after contact or even get into contact.

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

It seems this year defenses are closing that QB rush down more effectively and for Tanny to make it an effective play he has to take a hit which I’d rather not see. Admittedly that could just be my perception, but I don’t see those free rushing lanes for him like we did last year.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

True on that — seems the DCs have adjusted to the read option. That might carry over to the roll out…..but heck Tanny can run. Would still like to see him take off more.

  26. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

LOL, what I just said earlier about how people run with a topic making all kinds of assumptions with limited knowledge of the situation is in full swing now.

    • D's avatar D says:

Like your knowledge of the situation and how you are running with it, same as the rest is with better knowledge? Again, i put up there what i think would help him, you said it was already being done but wouldnt that be an assumption on your part just like it was on mine? You know for certainty they do that exact drill with him.

Also this knowledge that Tanny is fine, the audible situation is normal, etc comes from some insider information where you know the situation and the rest of this are just jumping to conclusions?

I think the discussion here is just fine despite the differences in opinion.

D, have at it then. I think it’s a topic that is spinning into all kinds of other criticisms because you and others feel like criticizing RT. Didn’t we just win on the road where he played pretty well? It’s as if he’s the only QB who doesn’t make a mistake here and there. The Eagles DL and front 7 gave our protections a tough time but we hung in there and got the win. Games aren’t always pretty.

    • son of a son of a shula's avatar son of a son of a shula says:

He was ok but didn’t do shit late second qtr or at the end of the game for the most part. In other words it was a normal outing but the D just happened to show up.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Well you can blame him for it but this offense has lots of issues including the guy calling the plays. I’m not saying Tanny is awesome and has no flaws, I just think too many people put it on him when there are more glaring issues that are a problem.

We saw and read reports like Pouncey got steamrolled by Cox and really struggled in the Eagles game. That’s a pretty significant issue to have when your center is having a rough day. Other OL also had rough moments. Then you have an OC calling cutesy plays when there is no need to. The entire offense needs to get better from the HC to the OC to the players. Focus on what you do well instead of fucking around with all these other plays that aren’t necessary.

    • D's avatar D says:

No i dont think he played particularly well and the team didnt really play particularly well with exception of the usual suspects. We backed into that win, and in fact the winning TD was a very bad pass by Tanny that LUCKILY was a tipped pass we got to and not them. Tipped passes, especially those that bounce that high in the air almost always go to the defense, and if that had happened, it was game over for us.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

That tipped TD was at the beginning of the 4 qtr, that wasn’t game over. The Eagles would have had the ball at the 20 unless they ran it out of there which I doubt they would have done.

I guess you were talking cuts of meat.If not google it…

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Old saying Tim — sometimes I don’t think people these days realize how lucky we are.

My Dad grew up poor during the Depression. Sunday was a big night — the one day they bought some nice meat. On Monday they had “Gravy Bread.” That was toasted bread with the gravy from Sunday on it. Couldn’t afford meat two days in a row.

      • jetsssuck's avatar jetsssuck says:

my grandfather had similar stories where they got coal from the trains track where trains workers shoveled it over the steam room heaters. The grandparents would use this to heat house and cooking. How lucky are we. Very…

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Js — surprised you had to go to your grandfather on that. Think you are probably a bit older than me, but then my parents had me late. Same, same though……these days people on welfare live better than the average person in the Great Depression did.

      • jetsssuck's avatar jetsssuck says:

yeah i’m very young compared to you. I’m a young 37 according to new math on calculating age.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

  36. jetsssuck's avatar jetsssuck says:

did any of you see the price per pound of turkey this year dropped to 59 cents per pound. Piggy must be happy but we are still having turkey and ham for thanksgiving.

  37. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Stanger, I understand what it was like to have meat only one day a week and on Sunday, my family did the same thing. I didn’t grow up poor, but we were by no means wealthy.

Those types of sayings usually come from issues like that. Many wonderful dishes people crave today were pauper meals.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

It is funny how some of the “cheap meals” ended up becoming better for you. Sorta like how only the nobility got the gout way back when.

  38. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I always thought the expression was “Can’t make ends meet”. I thought it had to do with being able to make enough money to meet the end of month bills. Guess not.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

I was going off what I assumed, but you very well could be right. Just googled it and this one is up for grabs…….with versions of what you thought competing with what I did.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Shiot — looks like the debate has been going on for 900 years……but seems it is at least spelled “meet.” Thanks Herd.
      —————————-
It’s old enough that it has centuries ago become an idiom, a turn of phrase that we don’t usually stop to think about at all, though we understand immediately that to make ends meet is to have enough money to live on. The oldest example I can find is from Thomas Fuller’s The History of the Worthies of England of about 1661: “Worldly wealth he cared not for, desiring only to make both ends meet; and as for that little that lapped over he gave it to pious uses”, but the fact that Fuller is making a little joke using it suggests he already knew of it as a set phrase.
